For decades, Oakland County was known as a wealthy Republican enclave. But as the national GOP leans hard to the right, this traditional Republican stronghold shifted to the left. On today's episode, we'll talk about how the state's second most populous county ended up in a political identity crisis with Politico writer and Michigan native Zack Stanton. You can read Zack's profile of Oakland County for Politico, titled “As Long as the Party Embraces Trump, It's Going to Have Trouble” here. For this episode I interview Ron Leary, a musician based in Windsor Ontario. After decades of working jobs, and even finishing a degree, alongside writing, performing and touring as a musician, Ron has decided to go all in with music. He has scheduled a summer of outdoor shows, and is doing his best to transition to our weird new digital realities, and Jenny and him talk about this, about what's changed for the livelihoods of musicians, and what potential the future holds for them. They talk about their shared love of travelling across Canada, and they talk about Ron's beautiful pandemic-album, "As Long as I Ain't Thinking About the Future" (that he recorded long distance with his friend Dean Drouillard). This is a cathartic conversation that gives some space to the hard reality of the struggle to make a life out of playing music, while still carrying hope and optimism. This interview was originally recorded on May 5th, 2021 Get on the email list at bridgingthesocialdistance.substack.com

What You Need to Know is Fake News is destroying America! Over the weekend Fake news media covered stories like the censoring of Dr. Seuss, Megan and Harry's interview, and the Viking that entered the Capitol building on Jan. 6th. What they failed to mention was a 1.9 trillion dollar bill that's supposed to “help” America, but if you researched how the money should be designated you'll see it will do the complete opposite. It's a tragedy that no one was ready to fight back and stop this terrible bill. Fake news is failing us and for a clear example of this, see the Biden Covid corruption bill.  James Reston, Jr., author, and play writer, joins the show to discuss his brand new book The 19th Hijacker: A Novel. It was very important to James to write about a side of the story of 9/11 that is rarely told. He gives a parallel between the 9/11 commission and the January 6th commission. James believes that before a Jan. 6th commission is created the dust needs to settle and it should be a truly bi-partisan group.  Julie Kelly, author, and senior contributor at American Greatness, talks about an article she wrote when her daughter went off to college ‘As Long as I'm Living, My Baby You'll Be'. Julie gives her opinion on the hype of Dr. Seuss books earlier this week. Also, Julie and Ed discuss the January 6th commission that Speaker Pelosi is wanting to create. What You Need to do is find the things that matter and don't be distracted! Fake News is desperately turning our attention elsewhere, but they are destroying our system and truly our way of life. Before this massive Covid Corruption Bill (“stimulus”) is signed, the Biden administration is plotting another massive spending bill that pre appropriates money through 2022! Now they won't have to come back and work on it in what's sure to be a dicey election year for Democrats distancing themselves from the Biden disaster. In the Spring of 2016, protests concerning the Dakota Access Pipeline dominated national headlines. For many people, it was the first time they'd thought about the relationship between Indigenous peoples and environmental justice. However, what occurred at Standing Rock and the #NoDAPL movement was part of a long history of Indigenous resistance and protest. In today’s episode, Dina Gilio-Whitaker describes the importance of those events and how they are connected to other movements, past and present. Her most recent book, As Long as Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice from Colonization to Standing Rock, Gilio-Whitaker (a citizen of the Colville Confederated Tribes) explores this history through the lens of “Indigenized Environmental Justice” through the " fraught history of treaty violations, struggles for food and water security, and protection of sacred sites while highlighting the important leadership of Indigenous women in this centuries-long struggle.”

As Long as You, a Follower of Jesus, Live on Earth, God Has Work for You; It Is Real Work - You Are to Live in Christ and Let Others See Jesus in Your Life MESSAGE SUMMARY: As a Follower of Jesus, God Expects You to Both Work for Kingdom and Witness for the Gospel. Also, as a follower of Jesus, you are to live in Christ and to let others see Jesus in your life. If you are to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for you – God has work for you; it is real work. The spiritual life is work – it is fruitful labor. Also, Godly conduct is a necessity to live in Christ as we are instructed in Philippians 1:27: “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ . . .”. Not only does God have a work for you, but you, also, have a witness for Him through your actions, words, and your attitudes. Your actions, words, and attitudes constantly reflect who and what God is in your life. Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 2:10-12, succinctly presents what it means for a follower of Jesus “to live in Christ”: “To be a witness, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers. For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.".   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, I can do what He asks of me. (Philippians 4:13). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. (Philippians 4:14). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Galatians 5:18-26; 1 Peter 1:15-19; 1 Thessalonians 2:10-12; Psalms 37d:21-40. A WORD FROM THE LORD WEBSITE: www.AWFTL.org. Hello Capital Region! This is the Hudson Mohawk Magazine on WOOC-LP 105.3 FM Troy and WOOS-LP 98.9 FM Schenectady broadcasting from The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY. On Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor and celebrate Indigenous communities. For this reason, the Hudson Mohawk Magazine is dedicating our entire show today to Indigenous voices by spotlighting our podcast series: “Indigenous Voices at the Intersection of Environmental & Social Justice,” produced by Anna Steltenkamp. The series seeks to decolonize and diversify the voice of media by prioritizing the voices of Indigenous leaders, as well as Indigenous-led organizations and initiatives, that are working to achieve environmental and social justice within their own communities and throughout the world. On today’s show, first we’ll hear from Janet MacGillivray, the Founder and Executive Director of Seeding Sovereignty on redefining ‘expertise’ in the environmental movement. Then we have Dina Gilio-Whitaker, author of “As Long as Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice, from Colonization to Standing Rock.” And later on, Heather Bruegl, the Director of Cultural Affairs for the Stockbridge-Munsee Community of the Mohican Nation, speaks about Papscanee Island, a site of cultural and historical significance, located in the Hudson River. After that, we’ll hear from Bryan Parras, co-founder of Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services and Sierra Club’s Beyond Dirty Fuels campaign—and he is one of the protagonists in the film, "The Condor & the Eagle." In this episode, we are treated to some of his uniquely Irish-American wit and story of how he began running during the 2020 pandemic, and just kept going! Great for runners of all levels to hear, he recounts why getting started can be difficult, but the joy of discovering newly being able to run and run and run. He also treats us to a few of his original songs, and his exploration of albums over time, which also explore how the Irish diaspora has influenced folk, rock, pop and even jazz in the United States. . He calls his unique genre "Sci F'Irish music", which fuses his love of science fiction, fantasy, and comedy with his Scots-Irish heritage. In this episode, we feature songs about elves, hobbits, dragons to cats, all of course mixed with some familiar Irish pub tunes. He tells us about "Selcouth", which means “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” What is Celtic exactly? We get into the diversity of Celtic culture, from Scotland and Wales to las Celtas in Galacia, Spain to Celts in Brittany, France, and of course the roaming global Irish expats, who have plotted little cultural embassies in every corner of the globe through Irish Pubs. Marc is open and enthusiastic towards discussing a wide range of interpretation of Celtic culture and influence, from Renaissance Festivals to SciFi fantasy conventions, which allow us to again have a sense of wonder and imagination. Indeed, much of the history of Ireland is transmuted through song and lore (oral storytelling and written prose), an artistic view of a world that interweaves the spiritual fabric into everyday life, and interpretations of the natural world. Our buddy, Brian, pulled off prepping for an RV getaway 'cross country with his family in just 3 days!! It's not too late to check out some summer fun options that are also safe options that help you #stayathome - at least virtually. :)  And, of course, when renting, especially privately, make sure to ask about their cleaning protocols — and in any case, bring along some sanitary wipes.Pricing depends on the size of the vehicle you're renting, the length of the trip and the time of year you're traveling.  On average, you can expect to pay $45-$250 per night. You can travel, sleep, and eat in the same self-contained environment, connect with nature and discover lesser-known locations with limited contact with others.  And a lot of your comforts of home can come with you while on vacay. If you're hankering to take a road trip without the risk of walking into and out of hotel rooms, restaurants, and public restrooms, RVing allows you to bring your own accommodations along for the ride.It can also be a safer way to visit friends and family …… you can have a social distance dinner and park in their driveway or street for a night or two..they don't have to kick their kids out of their bedrooms to make room for you. :)And depending on the rental company, you can have your pets traveling with you- so you don't have to pay boarding fees and they can enjoy the sights with you- and they have a safe place to stay during the day when you're out and about- AS Long as you follow guidelines to keep them VERY COOL And with plentiful access to water.TIP: RVs generally need to be driven slower than cars, so a trip may take longer than your favorite map app estimates. To up-level your glamping experience by staying in one general vicinity not too relatively far from home. - like in your home state or just a 2-5 hour drive away. Less driving, fuel and mileage, you still get away and, like a cruise or a resort, you have the same place to sleep in and come back to each night. A Harvest of Friends first aired on September 11, 1974 and precisely 4 years later, the 5th Season of Little House on the Prairie would air. Season 5 brings us several topics and scenarios such as the introduction of a pickpocket named Albert, dealing with obesity, racism, a child who is blinded by the measles (and one who is "blinded" by falling out of a tree), anthrax, the death of one of the founders of Walnut Grove, Jews in Walnut Grove, controversial gossip periodicals, cheating, coming of age, a goat, a Wedding that would be as iconic as Luke and Laura's (I may be dating myself with this reference), a pink and purple house, the coming of a new baby and so much more! This is in ONE season of LHOTP !   Sometimes I forget why I love this show so much and then I start flipping through episodes and am quickly reminded.  I am so fortunate to have Walnut GroveCast to discuss these shows but especially fortunate to have found people who are willing to support the show as well as take the time to come onto the show to discuss.   Kim Layer is my podcast partner on "Unsolved Mysteries Rewind" and we recorded As Long as We're Together after having recorded several episodes about murder, death and other dark topics. It was a refreshing discussion that I think we both needed, sometimes it's important to remember that LHOTP is always there to cheer you up or make you ugly-cry and 'cleanse the palate'. As Long as We're Together originally aired on September 11, 1978. I mentioned on the episode that the audio of the clips are TERRIBLE for this episode - I may mess with the EQ but mostly I think we're stuck with what's there. Yes, you should grow too big and too fast AS LONG as you are learning just as fast from the mistakes of others. Whereas if you are doing the same without self development and reading, then you'll surely fail but not because you grew too fast, but because you didn't grow responsibly. If you take a long time to do things, you will lose the interest, the motivation and thus your energy will turn into exhaustion. With all the chatter surrounding the recent videos from Shawn and Andrew East and their negative Down Syndrome diagnosis, we thought it best to chime in (with grace and compassion, we might add!). The East's have been extremely (and admirably!) open about their pregnancy journey thus far, but controversy arose when they shared what the media deemed “disappointing news” that their baby had markers for Down Syndrome, in their video, “pregnancy complications | the east family.” Their next video titled, “answered prayers. | the east family,” featured the couple celebrating news that their baby would be born “healthy,” AKA without Down Syndrome. Naturally, the online Down Syndrome community went wild. And even more naturally, the media celebrated this “uplifting update” from the couple. But how does someone with Down Syndrome or someone who has a loved one with Down Syndrome celebrate this? How can we jump for joy that your child won't be like ours? So friends, now that you're all caught up on recent news, join us for a conversation all about health and Down Syndrome, fear of the unknown, the challenges of being a public figure, and grace for families with a potential diagnosis. We're shouting the worth of our kiddos extra hard right now, and giving lots of extra grace too. Because that's what people with Down Syndrome have taught us to do. Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple: these companies, the big 5, know almost everything about your life. They know what websites you go to, what you're buying, where you are in real time, where you've been, where you might be going next, who your friends and family are, what you like and don't like, your political party, religion, credit card info, what you look like, your income, relationship status ... Why? So they can sell your data to advertisers and make some money? Sure. But there's so much more to it than that. These companies don't just want to know ABOUT your life. They want to REPROGRAM your life. They want to shape who you are. They want to get rid of your “problematic,” “outdated” views and usher in a new kind of truth. A truth that is subjective, that has no real definition or standard. A truth that can be whatever they want it to be. THEY want to be THE truth, and the way. A generation is being manipulated into doing certain things and believing certain ways by deliberate design; it's designed, it's a set up. From the news we listen, the universities we attend, the movies we watch, the social media platforms were apart of the search engines we us. Deception is created for our minds and it enters through our eyes and ears. Even many people's ‘Original thoughts' are an illusion. Google AND facebook decide what you see. They decide FOR you what is true and what is false. Google manipulates your searches for you to be subconsciously swayed — let that sink in. We are dealing with that today. Google meddling with the 2020 election? We will cover it, but also go back in history and explain that this is NOT a new development. Manipulation, deception: It starts often as subliminal. It's like the old story of theaters in the 50's supposedly flashing ‘eat popcorn' ‘drink coca-cola' on the screen for a single frame, enough for the subconscious to pick it up, and as the story goes, sales increased by over 50%. Deception usually doesn't move in big steps. Deception is slow, it's tricky, small, cunning, it is sly. Like the serpent in the Garden. Oh, did God really say? Jesus says WATCH OUT! That no one deceives you. The times of the end are MARKED by deception. Be sober minded. ALERT. The church needs a mind and heart that is LED by the Holy Spirit into TRUTH. Wake UP from your slumber! I am not saying for you to LEAVE everything. As LONG as the gospel can still be preached, USE EVERY MEANS AVAILABLE. I am trying to wake people up to what is going on around them. The world is getting more INTENSE every month. There is so much hanging in the balance. I am so ready for the CHURCH TO WAKE UP!! A member of the Colville Confederated Tribes, Dina teaches America Indian Studies at Cal State San Marcos and is policy director and senior research associate at the Center for World Indigenous Studies. We begin by looking back at Standing Rock and the Idle No More movement and talk about how important those were to environmental politics and prospects of energy transition today. Then we talk about how to further the decolonization of the environmental justice movement. We cover colonial unknowing, the erasure of genocide, and the importance of land and place based ethics for human survival. Dina tells us about her research on Panhe, a long-standing Acjachemen sacred site threatened with development, the complexities of sovereignty and recognition it surfaces and then we talk about how far the Rights of Nature legal arguments can go in the settler courts. Finally we debate what’s the real surfing capital of the world, the Institute for Women Surfers project (https://www.instituteforwomensurfers.org), surf feminism, and why Dina and her collaborators see surfing as an environmental justice issue. PART ONE Scott and Paul let you in on how you can score your own autographed copy of Steve Dorff's new memoir, I Wrote That One, Too. PART TWO - 02:45 mark Mother's Day is coming up soon! Paul counts down 5 of his favorite songs about moms before Scott lists 5 of his favorite songwriters who are also mothers. PART THREE - 12:11 mark Scott and Paul head over to Steve Dorff's house to get the inside scoop on why he sees color when he hears music; the reason that knowing how to write a great song is only half of songwriting success; how he accidentally wound up playing piano on a classic soul record; what he did to make Dusty Springfield throw a chair at him; how he bluffed his way into film scoring; the time he wrote one of the most iconic TV show theme songs of all time in just 15 minutes; and why he hears Boys II Men in his head when George Strait sings one of his biggest hits. ABOUT STEVE DORFF Steve’s Dorff’s songs have been recorded by hundreds of artists, earning him nominations for six Emmy awards and three Grammys. His first major success came with the soundtrack for the Clint Eastwood film Every Which Way But Loose, which yielded three #1 singles, including the title song. Similarly successful soundtrack albums would follow, such as: Bronco Billy, which earned him #1 hits with “Cowboys and Clowns” for Ronnie Milsap and “Bar Room Buddies,” a duet for Eastwood and Merle Haggard; Any Which Way You Can, which spawned a Top 10 hit of the same title for Glen Campbell; and Pure Country, which earned George Strait two #1 hits, “I Cross My Heart” and “Heartland.” In total, Dorff has written nine #1 country hits from motion pictures, more than any other songwriter in history. In addition to his soundtrack success, Dorff has written #1 hits including “I Just Fall in Love Again” for Anne Murray, “Through the Years” for Kenny Rogers, “Don’t Underestimate My Love For You” for Lee Greenwood, “Hypnotize the Moon” for Clay Walker, and “The Man in Love with You” for George Strait. Other artists who’ve recorded his songs include Barbra Streisand, The Carpenters, Celine Dion, Cher, Dolly Parton, Dusty Springfield, Garth Brooks, George Jones, Gladys Knight, Jackie Wilson, Kenny Loggins, Randy Travis, Ray Charles, Reba McEntire, Roy Rogers, Ringo Starr, Smokey Robinson, Whitney Houston,  and Willie Nelson. In addition to his songwriting, Dorff has scored countless films and TV shows, including Spenser: For Hire, Murphy Brown, The Singing Bee, Just the 10 of Us, Murder She Wrote, Major Dad, Reba, and Growing Pains, for which he composed the hit theme song “As Long as We Got Each Other.” In 2017 he published his memoir, I Wrote That One, Too: A Life in Songwriting from Willie to Whitney, and he’s a 2018 inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Joining us with his walking stick is author Robert Hilliard, author of, A Season on the Allegheny. Rob has written on sports, history, and the outdoors for over two decades. He's formerly a contributing editor with Ohio Valley Outdoors magazine, and contributed to the history anthology, Rivers of Destiny. You can also check out the history behind Johnny Cash's song, "As Long as the Grass Shall Go," off his Bitter Tears Album, and how President John F. In 2009, Mosaic became a full-time ministry. “We realized that, in order to be good stewards of this calling, we would need to commit all of our time to writing, recording our music and organizing our ministry in order to get this thing off the ground,” says Jonathan Martin. After five busy months, Mosaic released their first original album, As Long as it is Day, in May of 2009. After hitting the road in June, God unfolded their route as invitations to minister came – from Chicago to Florida to California – and the group has been traveling and ministering nationally ever since. “Mosaic is willing to go wherever God opens a door,” says Molly. “We just long to serve with our music, whether that is sharing concerts of our original songs, joining a church for worship on Sundays, or playing at a specialized event like a women’s conference or a youth camp.” Mosaic enjoys sharing music in all types of settings. From large to small groups, or from older to younger audiences, this desire to encourage and edify others with the truth of God’s Word remains our foundation.
