Can We Slow the Doomsday Glacier? Arête on Glacial Intervention and Sea-Level Risk

Brent Minchew is Co-Founder, Executive Director, and Chief Scientist at Arête Glacier Initiative, a new nonprofit launched to close the gap between frontier glaciology research and actionable sea-level forecasts—and to probe whether “brake-tapping” inside Antarctic glaciers can slow their slide into the sea. Brent explains why current models still span 1–6 feet of rise by 2100—even if Paris targets are met—and how melting glaciers, especially Antarctica's so-called “Doomsday Glacier,” drive that uncertainty. He details why glaciology remains drastically underfunded, how sea-level changes already threaten coastal economies via insurance markets, and where Arête's first $5 million in philanthropic capital is going. He also walks through early-stage solutions—from thermo-siphons that passively refreeze ice to pumping sub-glacial water—that could “hit the brakes” on glacier flow and buy humanity time for deep decarbonization. In this episode, we cover: [03:45] Launching Arête to bridge glacier science and solutions[05:38] Inside the “doomsday glacier” and its global risk[07:18] Why Thwaites may collapse even if we hit climate goals[09:51] Sea level rise: Millions displaced per inch[12:41] The silent crisis of glacial melt[13:28] Economic ripple effects of rising seas[15:53] What Larsen B's collapse taught us[20:04] Arête's model: Philanthropy + global research[22:51] Advancing glacier tech through TRL stages[25:45] How Antarctica is governed[35:28] Refreezing glaciers with thermo-siphons[45:00] Drilling costs vs. seawalls: Where's the value?Episode recorded on May 14, 2025 (Published on June 2, 2025) Enjoyed this episode? In January of 2019, journalist Elizabeth Rush joined 56 scientists and crew people aboard an ice-breaking research vessel to study the Thwaites glacier in Antarctica. The glacier, which is about the size of the state of Florida, has been nicknamed the “Doomsday Glacier” for the effect its disintegration would likely play in the rise of global sea levels. “If we lose Thwaites, there's great concern that we will lose the entirety or big portions of the West Antarctic ice sheet and that those glaciers combined contain enough ice to raise global sea levels 10 feet or more,” Rush told Dan Richards on this episode of Trending Globally. Rush recounts her voyage aboard the Palmer and how it reshaped her understanding of our changing climate and planet in her 2023 book, “The Quickening: Antarctica, Motherhood and Cultivating Hope in a Warming World.” However, as the title suggests, the book is also about another, more personal journey: Rush's decision to have a child. The resulting book is part adventure travelogue, part mediation on the meaning of motherhood, and part climate change manifesto. It also offers some much-needed wisdom on how to envision a future when it feels like the world is falling apart. Sustainability In Your Ear welcomes back oceanographer and author John Englander, who last visited with us in February 2023. John is the author of two pivotal books on Sea Level Rise, High Tide on Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis, which explores the science behind rising seas and its far-reaching impacts on society, and Moving to Higher Ground: Rising Sea Level and the Path Forward, which offers a comprehensive look at how individuals, businesses, and governments can adapt to this unavoidable reality. He recently gave a talk at the U.S. Naval Academy and shares the reaction he heard from admirals and strategists charged with protecting U.S. interests a sea. John delivered a stark warning about the accelerating rate of sea level rise, emphasizing the vulnerabilities of the Antarctic ice sheets—particularly the Thwaites Glacier, which also known as the "Doomsday Glacier." He warned that the collapse of the Thwaites alone could lead to significant sea level rise within the next few decades, with profound implications for global military operations, coastal infrastructure, and international security.Sea level rise is the permanent change humans will live with for centuries, probably millennia, because the oceans have absorbed most of the heat trapped in the Earth's atmosphere. Average sea surface temperatures have climbed by about 0.8 degrees Celsius, or 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit. The Arctic is warming four times faster, about 3 degrees Celsius since 1980, and that has raised sea levels by between 21 and 24 centimeters, or about nine inches, in the same period. John also shared recent warnings about the collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which drives circulation of seawater globally. Until we lower emissions sufficiently to stop glacial melting, sea level will only rise more and ports, infrastructure, and entire economies will deal with the threat of disruption. Learn more about the organization he cofounded, the Rising Seas Institute, at https://risingseasinstitute.org/. It became a program of Nova Southeastern University on November 1, 2024.

In this episode of Discover Daily, we explore a range of fascinating topics that span the realms of technology, science, and culture. From the groundbreaking development of a new AI-driven streaming service called Showrunner to the alarming melting of Antarctica's "Doomsday Glacier," and from the unprecedented success of a new lung cancer drug trial to the rise and fall of the ghost kitchen industry, this episode covers a diverse array of stories that are sure to pique your curiosity. One of the most exciting developments discussed in this episode is the launch of Showrunner, an innovative streaming platform that harnesses the power of artificial intelligence to enable users to create their own animated shows. By providing simple text prompts, users can control various aspects of the show, such as dialogue, characters, and shot types, while the AI takes care of the writing, voicing, and animation. This revolutionary approach to content creation has the potential to disrupt the entertainment industry, but it also raises important questions about the role of human creators and the use of copyrighted materials.Another highlight of the episode is the discussion of a recent experiment that simulated a wormhole using quantum computers. While the simulated wormhole is not a physical one, the experiment supports the holographic principle, which suggests that space-time and gravity could emerge from quantum effects. This groundbreaking work provides a new way to study quantum gravity in a laboratory setting and opens up new avenues for exploring fundamental questions about the universe using quantum computing.Pages from Perplexity's Discover feed:New streaming service with AI showshttps://www.perplexity.ai/page/New-Streaming-Service-2Lpd0h2xSYuQz8Tq7OQK3gUniverse Wormholes Simulation Experimenthttps://www.perplexity.ai/page/Universe-Wormholes-Simulation-WUoAJ3CDREaEXZrOC2WAgwNew Lung Cancer Drug Trial Successhttps://www.perplexity.ai/page/New-Lung-Cancer-8pW4sw6jQ8yEhqwgpWKhwQAntarctica's Doomsday Glacier Is Meltinghttps://www.perplexity.ai/page/Antarcticas-Doomsday-Glacier-GCsIsjl_TpSAVEBXRtlo.AThe Fall of Ghost Kitchenshttps://www.perplexity.ai/page/The-Fall-of-eRj.SMPZSLyVWXcRjg8G5APerplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. A team of scientists say seawater flowing underneath and into gaps in the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is contributing to the melting of the massive ice formation — a potentially ominous sign of the coming effects of human-driven climate change from the world's widest glacier. These areas of the glacier may be undergoing "vigorous melting" from warm ocean water caused by climate change, which could lead to even more rapid sea-level rise around the globe. The Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica — nicknamed the “Doomsday Glacier” because its collapse could cause catastrophic sea level rise — is the world's widest glacier and roughly the size of Florida. It's also Antarctica's most vulnerable and unstable glacier, in large part because the land on which it sits slopes downward, allowing ocean waters to eat away at its ice. Thwaites, which already contributes 4% to global sea level rise, holds enough ice to raise sea levels by more than 2 feet. But because it also acts as a natural dam to the surrounding ice in West Antarctica, scientists have estimated its complete collapse could ultimately lead to around 10 feet of sea level rise — a catastrophe for the world's coastal communities.

Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is massive, bigger than the state of Florida. If it collapses, it could reshape every coast on this planet during this century. That's why it's sometimes known as “the Doomsday Glacier.”And yet, until recently, we knew very little about it. Because Thwaites is extremely remote, reachable only by crossing the wildest ocean on the planet, scientists had never observed its calving edge firsthand. In 2019, a ground-breaking international mission set out to change that, and writer Elizabeth Rush was on board to document the voyage.  We caught up with her to learn about life on an Antarctic icebreaker, how she grappled with classic Antarctic narratives about exploration (and domination), and how she summons hope even after coming face-to-face with Thwaites.     Featuring Elizabeth Rush. SUPPORTOutside/In is made possible with listener support. A new study says that no matter how much the world cuts back on carbon emissions, a large and important part of Antarctica is expected to disappear. 一项新的研究表明,无论世界减少多少碳排放,南极洲的大部分重要地区都将消失。 Researchers used computer models to predict the future melting of protective ice around Antarctica's Amundsen Sea in western Antarctica. They said the “unavoidable” melting will take hundreds of years. It will slowly add nearly 1.8 meters to sea levels. And it will be enough to reshape where and how people live in the future. The study was published recently in Nature Climate Change. It found that even if future warming was limited to just a few tenths of a degree more, it would have “limited power to prevent ocean warming that could lead to the collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.” 该研究最近发表在《自然·气候变化》杂志上。研究发现,即使未来的变暖幅度仅限于零点几度,“防止海洋变暖导致西南极冰盖崩塌的能力也有限”。 Many scientists say the goal of just a few tenths of a degree of warming is unlikely to be met. 许多科学家表示,将气温升高零点几度的目标不太可能实现。“Our main question here was: How much control do we still have over ice shelf melting? How much melting can still be prevented by reducing emissions?” said study lead writer Kaitlin Naughten. She is an expert on oceans at the British Antarctic Survey. “我们的主要问题是:我们对冰架融化还有多少控制力?通过减少排放还可以防止多少融化?” 研究主要作者凯特琳·诺顿说。她是英国南极调查局的海洋专家。 She said their research suggests that Earth is set on the path to a quick increase in the rate of ocean warming and ice shelf melting over the rest of the century. 她说,他们的研究表明,在本世纪剩余时间内,地球将走上海洋变暖和冰架融化速度迅速加快的道路。 While past studies have talked about how serious the situation is, Naughten was the first to use computer modeling to study how warm water from below will melt the ice. 虽然过去的研究已经讨论了情况的严重性,但诺顿是第一个使用计算机模型来研究来自下面的温水如何融化冰的人。 The study looked at four different cases in how much carbon emissions the world produces. In each case, ocean warming was just too much for this area of the ice to survive, the study found. 该研究考察了世界碳排放量的四种不同情况。研究发现,在每种情况下,海洋变暖都导致该区域的冰无法生存。 Naughten looked at melting, floating areas of ice that hold back glaciers. Once these areas of ice melt, there is nothing to stop the glaciers behind them from flowing into the sea. 诺顿观察了正在融化、漂浮的冰块,这些冰块阻碍了冰川的形成。一旦这些区域的冰融化,就没有什么可以阻止它们后面的冰川流入大海。 The study also looked at what would happen if future warming was limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius over mid-19th century levels: the international goal. They found the runaway melting process in this case as well. 该研究还研究了如果未来气温升高限制在 19 世纪中叶水平的 1.5 摄氏度之内会发生什么:国际目标。他们在这种情况下也发现了失控的熔化过程。 The world has already warmed about 1.2 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times and much of this summer went past the 1.5 degrees mark. 自前工业化时代以来,全球气温已经升高了约 1.2 摄氏度,今年夏天的大部分时间都超过了 1.5 摄氏度。 Naughten's study looked at the part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet that is most at risk from melting from below, near the Amundsen Sea. It includes the very large Thwaites ice shelf that is melting so fast it is called “the Doomsday Glacier.”诺顿的研究着眼于西南极冰盖中阿蒙森海附近最有可能从下方融化的部分。它包括非常大的思韦茨冰架,该冰架融化速度如此之快,被称为“世界末日冰川”。 That part of Antarctica “is doomed,” said University of California Irvine ice scientist ice scientist Eric Rignot. He was not part of the study. He added, “The damage has already been done.” 加州大学欧文分校的冰科学家埃里克·里格诺特(Eric Rignot)表示,南极洲的这一部分“注定要灭亡”。他没有参与这项研究。他补充说:“损害已经造成了。” Naughten does not like to use the word “doomed,” because she said 100 years from now, the world might not just stop but drive back carbon levels in the air and climate change. But she said what is happening now on the ground is a slow collapse that cannot be stopped, at least not in this century.

The climate crisis is affecting glaciers across the world in myriad ways. Dramatic melting, steep declines, and overall reduction in mass are some of the changes seen in both polar glaciers and the mountainous peaks of every continent. Understanding these changes requires understanding how we monitor these enormous ice masses. The health of glaciers affects the well-being of the populations living near them, but they have far-reaching consequences, such as global sea level rise.  Host Dr Alfredo Carpineti spoke with Dr Peter Davis from the British Antarctic Survey about Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica, otherwise known as the "Doomsday Glacier". Thwaites is Antarctica's most endangered glacier and studying it is of global importance.

We all want clean water and know the importance of taking care of our environment, but the Climate Change Agenda has not been about that for a long time. Despite evidence mounting against their arguments (i.e. the "Doomsday Glacier" in Antarctica growing and their failed assertions from the 70s "oil is running out soon" to the calamities Al Gore proclaimed in the past), etc), its perpetrators continue to double down. Now, more Americans are fighting back against the culturally Marxist movement. Dr. Jerome Corsi delves into what's happening on The Truth Central. Also, Congressional Republicans mostly caved into the Biden Administration's spending wishes in a debt ceiling agreement, but there is one glaring point of interest: the freezing of student loan payments will come to an end. While the mainstream media has been paying attention to Ukraine and the debt ceiling discussions, Iran, Iraq, Russia and China have been working on a new deal confirming what will become a New Oil Market Order.Get Dr. Corsi's new book with Swiss America CEO Dean Heskin, How the Coming Global Crash Will Create a Historic Gold Rush: https://www.thetruthcentral.com/how-the-coming-global-crash-will-create-a-historic-gold-rush/Follow Dr. Jerome Corsi on Twitter: @corsijerome1Our website: https://www.thetruthcentral.comOur Sponsors:MyVitalC: https://www.thetruthcentral.com/myvitalc-ess60-in-organic-olive-oil/Swiss America: https://www.swissamerica.com/offer/CorsiRMP.phpThe MacMillan Agency: https://www.thetruthcentral.com/the-macmillan-agency/Pro Rapid Review: https://prorrt.com/thetruthcentralmembers/RITA: https://members.sayrita.com/truthcentralreaders/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-truth-central-with-dr-jerome-corsi--5810661/support.

Scientists got their first up-close look at what's eating away part of Antarctica's Thwaites ice shelf, nicknamed the Doomsday Glacier because of its massive melt and sea rise potential, and it's both good and bad news. Using a 13-foot pencil-shaped robot that swam under the grounding line where ice first juts over the sea, scientists saw a shimmery critical point in Thwaites' chaotic breakup, “where it's melting so quickly there, there's just material streaming out of the glacier,” said robot creator and polar scientist Britney Schmidt of Cornell University. Before, scientists had no observations from this critical but hard-to-reach point on Thwaites. But with the robot named Icefin lowered down a slender 1,925-foot (587-meter) hole, they saw how important crevasses are in the fracturing of the ice, which takes the heaviest toll on the glacier, even more than melting. “That's how the glacier is falling apart. It's not thinning and going away. It shatters,” said Schmidt, lead author of one of two studies in journal Nature. That fracturing “potentially accelerates the overall demise of that ice shelf,” said Paul Cutler, the Thwaites program director for the National Science Foundation. “It's eventual mode of failure may be through falling apart.” The work comes out of a massive $50 million multi-year international research effort to better understand the widest glacier in the world. The Florida-sized glacier has gotten the nickname the “Doomsday Glacier” because of how much ice it has and how much seas could rise if it all melts — more than 2 feet (65 centimeters), though that's expected to take hundreds of years. The melting of Thwaites is dominated by what's happening underneath, where warmer water nibbles at the bottom, something called basal melting, said Peter Davis, an oceanographer at British Antarctic Survey who is a lead author of one of the studies. The good news: Much of the flat underwater area they explored is melting much slower than they expected. The bad news: That doesn't really change how much ice is coming off the land part of the glacier and driving up sea levels, Davis said. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Politicians are calling on President Biden to increase security measures at the southern border to mitigate fentanyl in the States. But when cartels are only being fueled by the profits they make in America, national efforts to limit fentanyl can seem pointless. If fentanyl is here to stay, a promising strategy to decrease its effects is to educate Americans on its consequences. UFOs? Balloons? Spy Cams? Here's What's Going On This week, the saga over UFOs, balloons, and spyware continues. The drama all started with a Chinese surveillance balloon, and then—one by one—governments kept finding others in the U.S. and Canada. Earlier this week, President Biden announced, “We don't know yet exactly what these three objects were. But nothing right now suggests they are related to China's spy balloon program or that they were surveillance vehicles from any other country.” So what do we know about these balloons? And why is this such a big deal all of a sudden? Casey Crownhart, climate reporter at the MIT Technology Review, joins Ira to discuss the hullabaloo surrounding these flying objects and other science news of the week. They also talk about the outbreak of Marburg virus in Equatorial Guinea, Tesla agreeing to open some charging stations to other EV drivers, the startups trying to remove methane from the air, what a pencil-shaped robot taught scientists about the “Doomsday Glacier,” and why researchers modeled a new camera after cuttlefish eyes.   How The Western U.S. Could Rebuild Its Water Infrastructure In early January, California was inundated with record-breaking rainfall. The state was battered by back-to-back storms, which caused severe flooding and power outages. But could there be a silver lining in those storm clouds? Given the historic drought conditions plaguing the western U.S., a way to collect or divert rainwater to use when the dry season hits is especially appealing. However, potential solutions are not within easy reach. Ira talks about the limitations and opportunities of storing and diverting rainwater with Dr. Andrew Fisher, hydrogeologist and professor of earth and planetary sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Later, Ira is joined by Dr. Sharon Megdal, director of the University of Arizona's Resources Research Center, to talk about the drivers of the water crisis and some of the policy solutions being floated to solve the problem.   Ohio Residents Want Answers About Risks Of Train Derailment Hundreds of people packed the high school gymnasium in East Palestine, Ohio, Wednesday evening, trying to get some answers about whether they were safe in their homes after an explosion and the release of numerous toxic chemicals following the train derailment two weeks ago. What started as an open house with tables set up around the floor for the US EPA, the Ohio EPA, the state Division of Wildlife, and the county health department to answer individual questions morphed into a town hall meeting. Residents sat in bleachers and yelled their questions to the officials. Many were angry, largely because Norfolk Southern, the rail operator, did not show up to the meeting. East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway, surrounded by the media, said the company feared for the safety of its employees because there was so much anger against them. Conaway said people keep blaming him for this horrible incident, and it's not his fault. A recent study from the Queensland Brain Institute confirms what herbalists have long said: There are properties of this mushroom that build brain cells. In mice, these properties promoted neuron growth when diluted in water, resulting in better hippocampal memory. This result is a very good sign that the properties in lion's mane mushrooms can protect against dementia and Alzheimer's, the researchers behind the study say. Using the isolated components of the mushroom could be a step forward in the treatment of these devastating brain conditions. Joining Ira to talk about this study is the study's co-author, Dr. Ramon Martinez-Marmol, research fellow at the Queensland Brain Institute, based in Brisbane, Australia.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

IELTS/Cambridge Exam Tips to Ensure Success with an Official Trainer/Examiner

Transcript: Hey. Good morning. This is Robert at English 360. And today we talk about Glacier. Glacier as the Americans like to call it. Basically, glaciers are big bodies of ice and they hold a lot of freshwater and scientists believe that it is catastrophic if they were to melt because the sea levels we don't see new rapidly. There is an article in the news which talks about Doomsday Glacier. It says there's a Doomsday Glacier, which could raise sea level by several feet, two three feet, basically about a half meter or more. And it's trying to survive by its fingernails. Now, obviously, glaciers are not living animals. It's figurative. This glacier is on the edge. It may melt completely. And if it does, we will be in big trouble. Let's see why. Antarctica's so-called Doomsday Glacier, nicknamed because of its high risk of collapse and threat to global sea level, has the potential to rapidly retreat in the coming years, amplifying concerns over the extreme sea level rise that would accompany its potential demise. Now, this is a difficult word to pronounce. The Thwaites glacier, capable of raising sea level by several feet, is eroding along its underwater base as the planet warms. In a study published Monday in the Journal Nature Geoscience. Scientists mapped the glacier's historical retreat, hoping to learn from its past what the glaciers will likely do in the future. They found that at some point in the past two centuries, the base of the glacier dislodged from the seabed and retreated at a rate of 1.3 miles or about two kilometres per year. That's twice the rate that scientists have observed in the past decade or so. So basically this huge glacier, which is rooted to the seabed now, is starting to detach. And one basic problem is that if it detaches from the seabed, it's going to melt more quickly. That swift disintegration possibly occurred as recently as the mid-20th century, according to a study. It suggests that Thwaites has the capability to undergo a rapid retreat in the near future once it recedes past a seabed ridge that is helping to keep it in. Thwaites is really holding on to today by its fingernails, and we should expect to see big changes over small timescales in the future, even from one year to the next.once the glacier retreats beyond a shallow ridge in its bed. The Thwaites glacier located in West Antarctica, it's one of the widest on earth and is larger than the state of Florida. But it's just a fraction of the West Antarctic ice sheet, which holds enough ice to raise sea level by up to 16 feet or about five meters, according to NASA.As the climate crisis has accelerated, this region has been closely monitored because of its rapid melting and its capacity for widespread coastal obstruction. The Thwaites glacier itself has concerned scientists for decades. As early as 1973, researchers questioned whether it was high risk of collapse. Nearly a decade later, they found that because that glacier is grounded to seabed rather than to dry land, well, ocean currents to melt the glacier from underneath, causing it to destabilize from below. It was because of that research that scientists began calling the region around the Thwaites the weak underbelly of the West Antarctic ice sheet. In the 21st century. Researchers began documenting the Thwaites rapid retreat in an alarming series of studies. In 2001, satellite data showed the grounding line was receding by around 0.6 miles or about one kilometer per year.In 2020 scientists found evidence that warm water was indeed flowing across the base of the glacier, melting it from underneath. And in 2021, a study showed that Thwaites ice shelf, which helps to stabilize the glacier and hold the ice back from flowing freely into the ocean could shatter within five years. From the satellite data we're seeing these big fractures spreading across the ice shelf surface, essentially weakening the fabric of the ice, kind of a bit like a windscreen crack slowly spreading across the ice shelf, and eventually it's going to fracture into lots of different pieces.Monday's findings, which suggest that Thwaites is capable of receding at a much faster pace than recently thought, were documented on a 20 hour mission in extreme conditions that mapped an underwater area the size of Houston, according to a new release. So there we have it. Basically this massive Armageddon of glacier or glacier like Americans like to call it is slowly melting. If it melts, catastrophe will take place literally. When glacier stored, fresh water is released to the sea and atmosphere. It brings about massive changes. It threatens agriculture, power generation and drinking water supplies. A study on New Zealand's glaciers has shown that glacier retreat closely tracks atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and as glaciers continue to melt, their loss will impact supplies of fresh water for drinking and a host of other human activities. This is how they can affect people around the world. Populous Asian countries such as China and India get much of the late summer river flow volume they rely on from glacier meltwater. In dry periods, the population of La Paz, Bolivia, relies heavily upon glacial meltwater from an ice cap. Farmers in Switzerland, Rhone Valley, have relied upon glacial meltwater to irrigate their crops for centuries by channeling it to their farms.Glacial meltwater drives, hydropower plants all around the world. Bottling companies package glacial mineral water, glacial melt water and even ice cubes made of glacial ice are in demand for specialty drinks. I mean, in essence, we rely on glaciers as a form of national water storage infrastructure. We don't have natural water. We don't have glaciers. They take on water in winter and release it evenly during warm months. But if precipitation remains the same, does it really make a difference? Yes, because glacial ice, sequesters water in a way that prevents it from evaporating readily without glaciers even if precipitation remains constant in high mountainous areas, that water will remain in liquid form, subject to peak evaporation and runoff. Whichever way you look at it, glaciers are fundamental to our survival and it is alarming that we are losing them by kilometers every year because of global warming.Big fossil fuel companies don't want you to think about this prospect of glacial melting. It goes against their profit, they would like you to use fossil fuels until they completely run out whether we are still able to live on this planet or not. It's up to us essentially to make those tough decisions. It's a very difficult prospect, but we must do our best. With this, we end it here. I hope you like this podcast. You will find a video version of it on YouTube with subtitles, and you will find the text in the description in the podcast as well. Have a nice fun and make sure you do your best to keep the climate as cool as possible. Take care for now. Earth's glaciers are melting. But some are in a bigger hurry than others. A glacier in Antarctica is adding water to the oceans faster than any other. More than a trillion tons of its ice have melted since 2000. That's raised global sea level by a few millimeters. And the glacier could add a lot more to the oceans in the decades ahead.Thwaite's Glacier covers an area as big as Florida. And it has a nickname: the Doomsday Glacier. A collapse could raise sea level by as much as three feet. The glacier is so far from any research base that it didn't receive a lot of hands-on attention until recently. Today, though, an international project is deploying people and equipment all across it. The project sent out its first expedition in 2018, and it's scheduled to continue through 2023.Scientists are using satellites to track the glacier's height and motions. They're recording air and ice temperatures, and drilling into the ice to determine the glacier's history. And they're using ships and underwater robots to plot ocean currents and to explore the glacier's edge, which extends far out to sea.The glacier meets the water at a ridge -- sort of like a tee holding up a golf ball. Melting ice behind the ridge has created a pool of warmer water. Scientists are concerned that water could tunnel through the glacier at that point, causing it to collapse. A recent study said that's not likely to happen soon, though -- perhaps delaying “doomsday” from Thwaite's Glacier.

There was a headline on Rollingstone magazine (link below) that mentioned the Doomsday Glacier was on the verge of melting. The headline didn't make me feel good about where we were at on reducing climate change, but it also didn't motivate me to do anything about it because the problem seemed too big.  Conservation optimism is important when trying to change people's behaviour to live for a better ocean. Optimistic stories can inspire people to do more for the ocean.  Reading the headline "'the fuse has been blown' and the Doomsday glacier is coming for us all" does not seem to instill inspiration, but more apathy.  The headline proves that the movie "Don't Look Up!" is less of a satire than it intended.  Link to article: https://bit.ly/3nJxqVn Connect with Speak Up For Blue: Website: https://www.speakupforblue.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/speakupforblue/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/speakupforblue

Last night the January 6th committee in the House voted to hold Trump's former chief of staff Mark Meadows in contempt. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court declined to block New York's vaccine mandate for heath care workers. President Biden will travel to Kentucky tomorrow as the death toll rises. We also cover some updates on what we know about the “doomsday glacier” (and why we should be seriously concerned). And lastly, USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee have agreed to pay a $380 million settlement to hundreds of survivors of sexual abuse by Larry Nassar. Why are gas prices are so high this summer? Then, court rulings and public opinion are pushing the NCAA to allow more compensation for college athletes. And, will political polarization lead to the creation of a new 3rd political party? Also on today's show: stress is linked with gray hair and could be reversible; the so-called Doomsday Glacier may not be so scary after all; the bacteria of a baby's belly shapes the baby's reaction to scary situations. What is phantosmia? Thanks for asking! The symptoms and after-effects of Covid-19 vary hugely between people and can be very incapacitating. We’ve already discussed anosmia, the loss of the sense of smell, in a past episode. But some people also report strange and unpleasant odours, that no-one else around can smell. The medical term for these olfactory hallucinations is phantosmia, coming from the Greek “phanto” for ghost and “osmia” for smell. That’s right, hallucinations aren’t always visual! Does that mean I could mistake one smell for another? Can phantosmia be linked to conditions other than Covid-19? And is it treatable? What is the urban exodus? Thanks for asking! The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the lives of almost everyone around the globe. City dwellers have had to adapt their daily lives to a new organisation and work-life balance. Many have chosen to leave their urban homes behind in favour of a calmer life in the suburbs or countryside. This has been described as an urban exodus, although there is some debate as to what extent this will last when the pandemic ends. Are we talking about a Moses and the Israelites kind of mass exodus? Should we expect the urban exodus to last in the long run? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here:What is Bollywood? What is Bollywood? Thanks for asking! If you’re a Westerner, you’ve almost certainly heard of Bollywood, but there’s also a decent chance you’ve never actually watched a Bollywood film! If Hollywood is the stronghold of American cinema, Bollywood is an even more generic term used to describe the Hindi-language film industry in India, in particular the city of Mumbai. The label is a portmanteau of Bombay, Mumbai’s former name, and Hollywood. There is debate about who exactly coined the term, which emerged in the 1970s. Some records suggest it was first used by a gossip column in the Indian magazine Cineblitz. You should be warned that the term is relatively rarely used in India. Many see it as derogatory or patronising, having been adopted as a blanket term by Westerners. It also excludes films produced in other Indian languages like Tamil or Bengali. So what exactly does a Bollywood film look like then? Is it as popular as American cinema? What are the latest trends in Bollywood cinema? What is the Doomsday Glacier? Thanks for asking! The Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica is melting rapidly and risks breaking up completely. For nearly a quarter of a century, climate scientists have been observing it closely and have nicknamed it the Doomsday Glacier due to its instability and potential impact on the future of the planet. Thwaites Glacier is more than 1km deep and has a surface area of 74,000 m2, larger than all of England. It’s more than 1,000 miles away from the closest research base, making it remote even for Antarctica. The speed at which the glacier is melting has increased due to currents of warm water flowing underneath it, wearing away at its base. A study published last month by Gothenburg University researchers showed that the quantity of warm water, measured for the first time using a robotic unmanned submarine, was far higher than previously thought. How long ago did the glacier start melting? What will happen if the glacier disappears? I bet it isn’t the only glacier in the world that’s causing concern... Cancer Removal Today is Thursday, February 4, 2021. At the top of our news, a new laser system to aid in cancer treatment will help surgeons remove cells without damaging healthy tissue. Scientists proved in the lab that the laser system could remove cancer cells in a way that does not damage the surrounding, healthy cells. Those healthy cells were within the width of a human hair..... Xenobots An African clawed frog, in biology, it is known as Xenopus laevis. This frog typically lives in sub-Saharan Africa's streams and ponds, scavenging for food that it rips apart with its feet. In January, researchers at the University of Vermont and Tufts University published a report that gave the amphibian a different lot in life. They harvested its embryonic skin and heart cells and reassembled the living matter into robotic devices — transforming Xenopus into xenobot. Xenobots are the first robots made entirely of living materials.... Doomsday Glacier If Thwaites melts away, that much-larger ice block will add water to our oceans as well, further driving up sea level rise. If and when this might happen, however, is what researchers are trying to learn. Scientists know that Thwaites Glacier is very important, but still, how much and how fast sea levels increase into the decades and centuries is still uncertain.... Blue Eyes I've heard that the blue waters near ocean glaciers are beautiful to behold. The same could be said about blue eyes. New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. A team at the University of Copenhagen have tracked down a genetic mutation that took place 6-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye color of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today.... NASA's Perseverance NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission is just 22 days from landing on the surface of Mars. The spacecraft has about 25.6 million miles remaining in its 292.5-million-mile journey and is currently closing that distance at 1.6 miles per second.... Human Evolution When we think of human evolution, our minds wander back to the millions of years it took natural selection to produce modern-day man. Recent research suggests that humans continue to evolve.... --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sciencebytes/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sciencebytes/support

Today's episode features Emily Schwans! Emily is a PhD candidate at Penn State working on glacier modeling in Antarctica, specifically the Thwaites Glacier. The Thwaites Glacier is part of the West Antarctic ice sheet, is sometimes referred to as the Doomsday Glacier, and is the widest glacier on earth at 80 miles! Understanding and modelling all these changes is part of what Emily works on and what we'll talk about today. But we also talk about her background, her introduction to geology, field work and modelling, and tangents about science fiction.
