GM Web3 ☀️Recap - June, 14 2023Degenz Market Report by @osf_rekt and @rektmandoAnother day of stocks up higher! Interest rates did sell off a little bit yesterday, possibly due to inflation numbers being priced in, but they did rebound already. Crypto had a very small bounce with BTC up to 26k and ETH in the same $1700 range. FOMC is today, if they pause rates this will be the first shift after many many months. The market is pricing in rate cuts for q4, although the FED has said otherwise in their commentary. Our hosts are expecting an uneventful meeting for the most part. A US judge blocked assets at Binance US in order to force negotiations; This is one of the first obstacles in front of the SEC's warpath to attack crypto.NFTsAzuki is having their Vegas event and they are holding it down for the "blue chips". $Meme drop is also incoming for the Memeland ecosystem and captains are holding strong around 9 ETH floor. A Fidenza traded at 130 ETH along with a few other notable Fidenza sales. The Blur token unlock is today with 7% of supply set to be released with the token currently sitting at $0.31. The Apecoin DAO council is making waves again with the upcoming election. Our favorite mutant @notthreadguy is running for a seat! It's tough to see the fruit of the council over the course of the last 6 months following the last election; We had promising elects, and threads full of ambition, but no real results that anyone can point to. The 25k per month salary is forcing some uneasy feelings on the community during this bear market when everything is down. FEWOCiOUSYesterday, Fewo announced his first collaboration with @adidasoriginals! Fewo joined us to share his experience of creating a huge canvas with linework of a kid in his room looking outside at the Adidas trefoil in Fewo's style. The shoe actually tells a story about the kids adventure and no detail is accidental, and the laces are of course blue with painterly clouds in fun Fewo fashion. Collect.adidas.com/fewocious has all of the information along with some amazing Fewocious visuals. The Fewos are coming out later this summer, and holders will have the opportunity to claim a wearable version of the Adidas sneakers!GM! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week's economic data has been closely watched, with both CPI and PPI indicating that inflation is coming down. The result has been a surge in the crypto markets, with Ethereum breaking into 2k and Bitcoin holding above 30k. These price movements suggest that investors are looking for alternative assets as they seek to protect their portfolios from inflation. While crypto is thriving, NFTs are struggling. Things are looking ugly, with red everywhere. Many NFT projects have seen their values plummet in recent weeks, and the outlook is not optimistic. However, there is one exception: a new PFP from 10ktf is coming out soon, which is a continuation of their collaboration with Gucci.ETH is currently experiencing a surge in value, which usually leads to a dump in floor prices. However, this time it's different. The rise in ETH's value is due to the $BLUR airdrop forming, which is driving up demand for the token.Unfortunately, not everyone in the crypto world is having a good time. Franklinisbored lost 2k ETH, and as a result, a bunch of apes that were leveraged to acquire this amount of ETH are also suffering. This is a reminder that the crypto world can be volatile and risky, and investors need to be cautious. On a more positive note, Fewocious was recently interviewed on a podcast, and the show was hosted from his studio in New York. Fewocious discussed the complexities of creating a generative art project using his extremely abstract art. This highlights the growing interest in the intersection between technology and art, and how blockchain is enabling new forms of creative expression. The past week has been eventful in the world of crypto and NFTs. While NFTs are struggling, crypto is thriving, with Ethereum breaking into 2k and Bitcoin holding above 30k. The $BLUR airdrop is driving up demand for ETH, and there is excitement about the upcoming PFP from 10ktf. However, Franklinisbored's loss serves as a reminder that the crypto world can be volatile and risky. On the positive side, Fewocious's discussion of generative art highlights the exciting possibilities that blockchain technology offers for artists and creatives. As always, investors should proceed with caution and do their research before making any investment decisions.GM Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Sydney Xiong works for the APENFT Foundation, and Ben Nolan is the founder of Cryptovoxels, an art-focused online universe. Whether you're new to the metaverse or already have an enviable NFT collection, the question of what the IRL art world's role in the metaverse will look like in the coming years is on many art lovers' minds. Though the wild world of NFTs can make it difficult to know where to look, some significant players are already shaping that future. Among them are Sydney Xiong, the director of the APENFT Foundation, which brings art and finance together in the metaverse, and Ben Nolan, the founder of Cryptovoxels, a virtual world powered by the Ethereum blockchain that hosts a variety of art, music, and cultural events. Earlier this year, APENFT hosted the open-call NFT exhibition "Second Lives" on Cryptovoxels, which featured big-name NFT artists like Beeple, Fewocious, and Pak alongside rising talents. The works were auctioned off on LiveArt, and APENFT's Art Dream Fund distributed $100,000 to 13 of the emerging artists chosen for the call. We recently spoke with both Xiong and Nolan about the mainstreaming of NFTs and what they find most exciting about art in the metaverse. Earlier this year, the APENFT Foundation launched "Second Life," an open call exhibition of NFTs at the APENFT ART MUSEUM in Cryptovoxels. Can you tell me more about this exhibition, particularly the theme? Sydney: All of the artists in the exhibition are linked by their use of digital media to explore regions of alternative realities in the metaverse. The theme of the open call, "Second Life," was inspired by a game that allows people to create an avatar for themselves and live a second life in an online virtual world. The artists we chose for the exhibition displayed a variety of creative visions inspired by the concept of a second life. Some are visions of a space-age future, others are biological, and still others are more playful. I was struck by the innovative and energising ideas that artists have for the future. Tell us about some of the winners of the open call. Who are the NFT artists we should be keeping an eye on? Sydney: The open call went extremely well. We received over 500 submissions. Some came from professional artists. Others were art students, and some came from creators who work in other fields such as design, music, and marketing. These artists work in a variety of mediums, from traditional mediums like copper plate photography to GIFs and digital animation. It was a lot of fun talking to them one on one and learning about their processes and the ideas behind each piece. WMD Studios, a Berlin-based art collective founded in 2021, is one of the winning artists. The team has worked in a variety of mediums, including VR, video, and installation, and is interested in the future of many other new art forms. I'd also recommend the artist Lil E, who presented the work Revelation 2077, as well as the artist Jansword Zhu, an artist and art historian interested in exploring new material, and whose work is very organic and illuminating. Why did you decide to host the exhibition on Cryptovoxels? Sydney: We had planned a physical exhibition in Shanghai, but it had to be cancelled the day before the opening due to the Covid. The postponement of this physical exhibition compelled us to consider an alternative option, as in-person exhibitions were becoming increasingly difficult at the time. Our APENFT Art Museum in Cryptovoxels was the best option we could think of because it's all online and easier to coordinate in this uncertain period of time while creating a very unique and really fun virtual experience. It's the ideal place to see digital art, in my opinion, because all of the pieces in the show were JPEGs, GIFS, moving graphics, and so on. While exploring Cryptovoxels, I was struck by the number of art galleries, museum spaces, and musical events that were taking place. How did that happen? Was it a conscious decision to cater to a cultural sphere, or did it happen naturally? Ben: I have no idea how we did it! We started out as a very technical blockchain and ended up with this small group of artists doing NFTs very early in 2018. Someone asked me one morning if they could add support for displaying their NFTs in a gallery-like setting. I really like gallery aesthetics, with tall white walls and nice lighting and shadows. That was a simple thing to target graphically early on. And then, when people came with these massive amounts of NFTs—we were already in the Ethereum ecosystem—it was quite simple to display those NFTs in the world. Then we were able to do gallery openings through Covid so that you could get together with 10 or 20 people to show a new collection back when the NFT scene was completely unknown and no one knew who we were. It worked extremely well. So I thought—galleries are awesome. We also have a diverse group of creators. We have a diverse group of women and men, as well as people of various ages and backgrounds. We really lean into it because it's something we seem to be good at. I believe in a network of metaverses—not just one metaverse, but multiple metaverses for different purposes. There may be one that is excellent for playing shooter games, one that is excellent for visiting art galleries, and one that is excellent for listening to music, for example. Cryptovoxels has ended up in the space of galleries and musical events, and I love being in that space. It's fantastic. For someone who is new to the metaverse, I liked that I didn't have to register for anything with Cryptovoxles and could just start exploring. "Barriers to entry" is a concept that is frequently discussed in the art world. I'm curious if this is something you both consider in terms of the metaverse. Sydney: In the future, everyone will have a cryptocurrency wallet. There won't be a huge barrier or problem for people to log in and explore Cryptovoxels or use OpenSea to buy NFTs. People will grow accustomed to the digital parallel universe. There are so many more things you can do in the virtual world than there are in the real world—there are no limitations in terms of shape, building forms, or what you might consider putting in museums or galleries. I'm really enjoying how people can work together collaboratively. I've heard of numerous projects in which multiple artists and designers collaborate to build and design. It facilitates the interdisciplinary dialogue that interests me. Ben: I agree with Syndey that the barrier will diminish in the future. However, we designed Cryptovoxels so that when you arrive, you are immediately immersed in the world. There is no way to log in. There is no way to choose your character. There are no instructions. You begin to explore a physical space and realise, "I can look around, I can walk, oh, there's art." I can look around at the other people. "I can talk to them." We didn't want anyone to be restricted from using it. We designed it to work on any device, which means it looks like a 15-year-old game because we try to use the most basic technology. For example, there are now a number of events where you must have a specific NFT to enter—this is unavoidable, but I wanted to create a world for people to explore that was full of things. In many of these virtual worlds, you are assigned a character who immediately asks, "Are you a man or a woman?" We didn't want to do that. Everyone gets a default avatar with a neutral walking stance, so I don't know if these events are attended by men or women unless someone actively declares their gender. Everyone merely exists. The metaverse is still taking shape. What are the guiding principles underlying each of your projects? Ben: User sovereignty and people owning their art, what they create, and what they collect. Also, everyone is welcome, and no one is excluded. We sincerely want to protect people's privacy and data. Right now, we have ways of funding the ongoing growth and development of Cryptovoxels without having to track people and monetise every aspect of it. That's very important to me. I want to offer our services at a low cost so that we can offer them to many people for free, and everyone who cannot afford to invest in cryptocurrency can still participate, build, create, and do all of these things. Then, those with more resources can contribute to global funding while also creating value for themselves that they can capture and hold. Sydney: I wholeheartedly concur. It's about maintaining your privacy and being able to own and profit from your own content. We have recently invested in many NFT projects as a foundation, more than 30 in the last six months. Apart from simply incubating and supporting crypto native artists, we have invested in a number of NFT projects aimed at expanding the ecosystem, with the goal of attracting traditional or Web 2 users to our website. What do you think the future of the traditional art world and the metaverse will be? Sydney: Our foundation is attempting to bridge the gap between the traditional art world and the so-called metaverse, or future online world. I firmly believe that these two worlds are colliding. Digitalisation and the digital presence of exhibitions will become more common in the future because it allows artists to reach a much larger audience and there are no limitations on what they can create. Actually, we're curating an offline exhibition again in April, and we're hoping to finish it this time! The exhibition is divided structurally into two parts: one with artists' works and the other with an enclosed LED wall space where we'll have a Cryptovoxels exhibition running concurrently with the offline exhibition. I really believe it will be fantastic—and I'll be able to share more details in the coming weeks. What are the main benefits of NFTs, in your opinion? Sydney: The distinction between artists and non-artists is stark. In a traditional gallery, the revenue is split 50/50. It's just your own profits here, and you get the royalty revenue every time a transaction is made on the work. Ben: It's also more fluid. If I buy some art off Sydney's wall, she has to take it down, crate it, and ship it to New Zealand. Then it will take two weeks to reach me. Or I can buy that artwork right away and have it in my wallet in a matter of seconds. As long as your keys are secure, I'll have somewhere to store it safely and easily. There are drawbacks, such as the carbon footprint, but those issues can and are being addressed. What do you say to NFT sceptics? Ben: I don't mind that so many people despise NFTs because I believe it gives us more time to build an amazing ecosystem in this space before everyone realises this is actually a fantastic way to go forwards. We do not want to use terrawatts of power on the Ethereum main nett. We don't want to concentrate all of the capital in the hands of a few early adopters who control the entire market. However, these are two anomalies in the system. There are so many benefits to people indelibly owning their art on a distributed ledger, having it freely transmissible to collect, and getting a return on it. This technology has some truly amazing features. I'm surprised that NFTs took off because I thought they were far too nerdy. We've been in them since 2018, and I never imagined NFTs would become so popular. I'm overjoyed.   Support us!

After talking to Gavin I quickly learned that his success as an artist wasn't by accident. It was from his pure tenacity and drive to live life on his terms by learning, creating, experimenting, and relentlessly doing what it takes to win."Everyone always said, 'Well, you should do something more practical.' And I just didn't care because it's very simple: you just keep doing it until you're there."—Gavin MeelerGrowing up, Gavin read every book he could find about celebrities and being financially successful out of fear that he would get stuck in a bad financial place. But it was when he discovered Gary Vaynerchuk that he finally found his person. Gary inspired him to try the flip game, buying items at garage sales and thrift shops and selling them elsewhere for a profit. But one day there was a video with Gary V and Fewocious describing NFTs that changed Gavin's trajectory forever.Gavin's is an amazing story that has an unexpected, full circle return of Gary V at multiple, impactful moments in his story, culminating with an unexpected, but all too fitting purchase of one of Gavin's NFTs."When anything happens two times it means you're on to something or you got lucky twice. While the deal is already being seen by many as Nike's way of saying “Just Do It” to the Web3 era, it'll also likely signal to NFT startups and legacy clothing brands alike that the world of virtual fashion will further heat up in 2022. Founded in 2019, RTFKT has becoming increasingly popular with sneaker and Web3 enthusiasts, and has gained momentum during the NFT boom that began earlier this year. In February, the startup released several virtual sneaker designs in collaboration with the artist Fewocious and quickly made more than $3 million buy selling more than 600 pairs that can't even be worn in the physical world. In March, it partnered with Atari on a limited edition Atari-themed virtual sneaker. And just last month, RTFKT partnered with the artist Takashi Murakami on an NFT auction to sell 20,000 3D avatars that are a part of the CloneX collection. Unfavorable events like the US Infrastructure Bill, China's prohibition on Bitcoin mining, and the release of the Omicron Covid version are predicted to cause significant selloffs of Bitcoin and Ethereum in early November 2021.Many experts still see Bitcoin and Ethereum as speculative assets due to huge trade volumes and market manipulation on key exchanges. Like Bitcoin and Ethereum, other cryptocurrency projects and endeavors are also undergoing a crypto winter.https://bitcoinist.com/bitcoin-hash-seven-day-moving-average-rate/Bitcoin Hashrate Hits New Record High Post-China CrackdownBitcoin has now seen a dramatic recovery in its hashrate since China had carried out its crackdown about half a year ago. The hashrate had dropped significantly when the region had made crypto mining activities illegal and had chased miners out of the country. China, then known as the bitcoin mining capital of the world, had hosted about 70% of mining activities.Following the crackdown, the mining hashrate from the region crashed to zero. This had greatly affected the mining community which had scrambled to find new homes for their mining farms. Now, five months later, most of the miners have resettled into other parts of the world and mining hashrate has recovered, soaring to new highs in the process.https://www.euronews.com/next/2021/12/14/elon-musk-announces-tesla-will-start-accepting-dogecoin-as-payment?utm_source=flipboard.com&utm_campaign=feeds_money&utm_medium=referralElon Musk announces Tesla will start accepting Dogecoin as paymentTesla boss Elon Musk said the electric carmaker will accept the cryptocurrency Dogecoin to purchase its merchandise on a test basis. The price of Dogecoin surged as much as 32 per cent on the news, before settling around a 25 per cent high, according to Coinmarketcap."Tesla will make some merch buyable with Doge & see how it goes," Musk said in a tweet on Tuesday.https://www.coindesk.com/layer2/2021/12/14/get-ready-for-the-2022-metaverse-real-estate-boom/Get Ready for the 2022 Metaverse Real Estate BoomThis time last year, if someone had said, “I'll sell you a plot of virtual land for 1 ETH,” most of us would have told them to kick sand. To everyone who believes they missed out on the latest blockchain gold rush, virtual land, think again. A more efficient and scalable future for the intersection of blockchain and real estate is being built as we speak – and it's not solely confined to the Ethereum blockchain.https://www.theverge.com/22833369/nike-rtfkt-nft-sneaker-shoe-metaverse-companyNike just bought a virtual shoe company that makes NFTs and sneakers ‘for the metaverse'One comparison I've heard repeatedly over the last year is that buying NFTs to “flex” on people in the metaverse is just like collecting sneakers, and now Nike is apparently trying to make sure it's ready for the literal version of that possibility. The apparel giant just announced the acquisition of RTFKT Studios, which it calls “a leading brand that leverages cutting edge innovation to deliver next generation collectibles that merge culture and gaming.”RTFKT claims that in February, a collaboration with teenage artist FEWOCiOUS to sell real sneakers paired with virtual ones managed to sell some 600 pairs/NFTs in just six minutes, netting over $3.1 million at the time. This was around the same early spring period when most of us were hearing about NFTs for the first time, as Grimes sold some $6 million worth of digital artwork on March 1st. It's not clear if any of these digital items are worth as much now; looking at OpenSea and Nifty Gateway right now, I see a number of them are either listed for or have recently sold for less than their original prices.https://alternative.me/crypto/fear-and-greed-index/https://coinmarketcap.com/Please subscribe, like, and share so that more and more people can view this content.DISCLAIMER: I will never give any financial advice. In Episode 4 of Probably Nothing TZ (@TZhongg) and Alexis Ohanian (@alexisohanian) chat with Noah Davis (@NonFungibleNoah) of Christie's. Noah is the former Head of Online Sales for contemporary art at Christie's, but is now primarily focused on NFTs and crypto related digital art projects. Noah discusses how he first got into NFTs, and how he was able to convince a 200+ year old company to begin auctioning NFTs this year. TZ, Alexis, and him also discuss a bit of art history, how NFTs align incentives between artists and curators/collectors, and the future of smart contracts in the art world. This wide ranging discussion shows how NFTs are starting to bridge both the fine art world and the crypto community.Links Mentioned in this Episode Beeple's first Christie's auction MakersPlace NFT NFT Now Christie's x OpenSea Timestamps00:30: Noah Davis intro01:20: How did Noah convince Christie's to get into NFTs?02:30: How did Noah first get into NFTs and what helped him understand them?04:20: What is the future of NFTs in the art world?06:50: Art Basel NFT prediction?11:30: What was the internal process on convincing Christie's to do a project with OpenSea?14:08: wen christie's dao?16:12: What was the process like of promoting Beeple's sale on Discord?19:40: What is "absurdist post-war French theater" and why did he study it in school?24:00: Secondary sales in a world of smart contracts28:40: Future hope for artist and smart contracts29:50: Working with artists compared to working with collectors32:48: Noah's experience in the NFT space33:34: If you were stranded on an island which NFT would you take from your collection? Specialist at Christie's in the contemporary arts department with a focus in NFTs. He started working on NFTs in March with his intro to NFTs during the first Beeple @beeple sale. Getting into NFTs and bringing them to Christie'sHow did Noah first get into NFTs? "NFTs really found me." Before he was head of NFTs at Christie's, he was the head of online sales for contemporary art. He was in the office last January to see an IRL piece of art for an auction. His colleague, Megan Doyle, brought an NFT opportunity to his attention. She had been contacted by MakersPlace for a possible NFT consignment, and asked Noah if he would be open to putting an NFT in his sale. Noah barely knew about NFTs. All he really knew was that Beeple sold his NFT at Nifty Gateway for $6 million, and that NFTs are a new asset class running on a blockchain foundation. What drew Noah into NFTs, beyond the art, was the promise of decentralization and the things that blockchain can do.  "We are heading towards a future that will have a foundation in blockchain. You can either end up with the state run dystopian future or you can build one yourself." Noah wants to see a future where there is a decentralized metaverse that is owned by the people for the people. If he can help do that within Christie's, a 200+ year old company, that could be really significant. Bringing NFTs to Christie's In the first conversation Noah had with Christie's they mainly talked about cryptocurrency.  Noah knew that some of their top clients were into crypto. He believed that NFTs were the perfect opportunity to jump into the space. The fact that it was ephemeral wasn't daunting to them. Christie's has sold dinosaur bones. If they can create some kind of excitement around an auction, Christie's will find a way to make it work. "I am really grateful towards Christie's for lending me such a long leash." NFTs have been reliably profitable for Christie's. They are now approaching $120,000,000 in total volume for the year. It's going to be 5% of their turnover. For the first Beeple sale more than 90% of applicants were not previously known to Christie's. Although this was more the NFT community and Beeple's community, Noah will continue to set the stage for artist to showcase their work. How did Noah's college degree in English with a focus on Absurdist post war french theater play a roll in Noah's love for NFTs? The absurdity of selling an asset that doesn't physically exist was extremely attractive to him.  "I think a lot about the theater of the absurd in the context of NFTs. What really drew me in was how counterintuitive NFTs are to the standards of the 21st century contemporary art world." Noah never felt like he completely fit in. He was sort of put off by the pretentious vibes in contemporary art, and how people tend to take themselves too seriously. Eugene Ionesco's play, The Bald Soprano, plays a huge role in understanding Absurdism.  The story behind the play is that one day while Ionesco was learning French and English, he was reading the textbooks and thought it was absurd that they were trying to teach him family dynamics. This then lead him to believe that the foundation of language is super shaky and unreliable. In the play, The Bald Soprano, nothing makes sense. It is indebted to people that question the moral and aesthetic values, at the time, by way of absurdity. "Ionesco would love NFTs." NFTs and ArtWhat is the future of NFTs in the traditional art world? In the traditional art world, you will see a lot more adoption from contemporary artist who dabble on digital media.  The more mega blue chip galleries that jump into NFTs, the more inspired artist will be to take the leap. To understand and overcome that stigma of NFTs as a step below "intellectually speaking" what contemporary art normally is, is a very challenging medium to master. "As more artist embrace this, we will see really dynamic projects coming forward and new amazing 1 of 1 art work from amazing talented bluechip artist."  Right now people like Tom Sachs (@tom_sachs) and Damian Hirst (@hirst_official), are the only real Fine Artists from the blue chip world that have mastered this. They are playing by the rules of the NFT space, but they are speaking directly to a crypto native audience. However, there will be artist that enter the NFT world, play by the old rules and somehow succeed. It's going to be a difficult bridge to build and the needle has really only been threaded once successfully with Christie's auction of Andy Warhol NFTs with the Andy Warhol foundation. They tokenized digitally native works that Andy made for the amiga computer. Art Basel NFT prediction? There will be a base line of friction from two different worlds. That's good because those sparks is where you get something creative.  “There will be a lot of chatter around NFTs for sure.” Christies is collaborating with NFTnow during Art Basel to host an event. They have built a, 2400 square foot, space in a bank building and repurposed it as an art gallery. Superrare and Collector 33 will have a presence there. “To see all this art, in this environment, is going to be interesting because we haven't really nailed the exhibition component of NFTs yet.” They have learned a lot and they are going to be applying all of it in Miami. You need to correctly activate the immersive quality of some of these artworks. Christie's and OpenSea sale? So far all the NFT sales Noah has conducted at Christie's have been off-chain, and because they are off-chain it is hyper manual.  All of the movement of the tokens are analog and payment is pretty clumsy. "It's like we are operating in this new dimension, but we are still pushing the buttons and pulling the string from the old one." This is their first collab with Opensea, if it goes well there is no reason why Christie's should auction their NFTs off chain. There will still be a place for traditional auctions, like the Beeple (@beeple) one they recently sold. But, if they are selling an ether rock and they are marketing that to a crypto native audience they can't get away with off chain. When's Christies DAO? "The idea of a DAO is an incredible thing." As much as Noah is really fighting to push things forward. There are things he wants to be really careful with. Like building in the metaverse and thinking about airdrops. Regulation is going to catch up with us and until these unknown areas are become more defined. There's no reason for a corporation like Christie's to dive in the front. NFT space and ArtistsWhat was the process of promoting Beeple's sale on Discord? Noah wasn't really involved in the promotion of the first Beeple sale.  At the time he was going more of the traditional media route, and still learning about NFTs and crypto. "The first time I heard someone refer to Ethereum as ETH, I took a beat and I had no idea what that meant, I didn't know what it was. I bought my first Ethereum in April." Noah didn't join Discord until after the Beeple sale. Because he hasn't used social media in a long time, he was very cautious. Justin Aversano (@justinaversano) invited Noah into Cryptopunk's Discord channel to promote the sale of a Cryptopunk that Christie's was having in May. He felt like he didn't belong there. He felt like he was the corporate salesman. Now he has his ens name in his username. But it took the same push to get him on Twitter too. Noah was so scared, his username was "Noah the Poser". Secondary Sales in a world on Smart Contracts. The first big contemporary art auction took place in the 80s.  The artist themselves were at the auction, and they accosted the seller because he bought the photos for $1,000's and he was selling them for $10,000's. "There was an intense animosity at the moment between the artist and the collector because it felt like it was deeply unfair, and it is." There are certain places in Europe that already have a resale royalty, and California was really pushing for this too. Noah strongly believes that artist should absolutely have these royalties.  With NFTs and blockchain, the artist and the creator have complete control over this. "The blockchain doesn't care. What you tell it to do, it is going to execute it. It is never going to make a mistake"If you program it with protocols that are fair, those will be the rules forever. Right now is the time to make sure that these rules make sense, are fair, and are equitable. Artist should own their smart contract, and have their own independence so that they can never get duped. That kind of responsibility and independence is very admirable. It is the way forward. Manifold is behind a lot of artist's smart contracts. Their philosophy is that artist should own their own smart contract. Working with artists "I love artists. I like to make art when I am not working for Christie's." Noah used to only get involved with the collectors or estates, and rarely with artists. Unless they were complaining, which is reasonable.  When contemporary art comes to auction it is usually not under the best circumstances. There's an industry term referred to as the "three D's". Divorce, debt, and death are the three major driving forces that bring contemporary art to auction. You are starting from a place of negativity. Working with artists, however, is all about positivity.  Noah feels such an incredible bond with the artists, like Beeple. He's made art with Fewocious (@fewocious) and has had lunch with Joshua Davis (@JoshuaDavis). "I hang out with these guys and it just feels right." Before he felt weird and almost felt like the enemy. Now he feels like he is helping these artist tell their stories. "The NFT space is magical. Everything I felt frustrated with in the contemporary art world is not at play in this space." If you were stranded on an Island and you could only take one NFT from your collection or any collection, which would you take? From Noah's collection, he would take his CrypToadz or his Deadfella. From any collection, Noah would take CryptoPunk 4301. It's from the collection of Sov.eth. It's a wild white hair with VR and pink lipstick. Noah was glowing while he was talking about this.

In Episode 2 of Transforming Luxury, BoF's new podcast presented by Klarna, we investigate what will inform the luxury product mix of the future. Indeed, the definition of a luxury good has expanded dramatically in recent years to now include a host of disruptive new categories, from the luxury sneakerhead culture that dominated the past decade, to collectibles, curios, NFTs and even some mass produced products capturing attention in the luxury market. Evolving consumer sentiment is also increasingly influencing luxury's manufacturing process. Today, customers demand brands and businesses authentically represent global cultures in a way that serves the communities themselves and not the industry's shareholders. They also hold brands accountable for the impact of their supply chains and production processes. Yet, workers' rights was among the worst-performing categories in BoF's Sustainability Index. To discover what this means for the future of the luxury goods industry, BoF assembled four global authorities to share their insight. Aaron Levant is an entrepreneur working at the intersection of fashion, culture, events and media. Levant co-founded streetwear and music festival ComplexCon, and streetwear trade show Agenda Today, Levant is CEO of NTWRK, a mobile-first video shopping platform — backed by Drake and LeBron James — that hosts events and exclusive, limited-edition product drops available to purchase immediately within its app. “For the last hundred years, luxury was easily defined as European couture — fashion houses who own the luxury space — and now, seemingly newer brands not only create luxury in their own right, but then collaborate with true luxury brands. I think the definition around luxury is ever evolving as for who fits in that category.” Zerina Akers is an American fashion stylist and costume designer. She is the founder of the self-funded e-commerce site Black Owned Everything and has worked as Beyoncé Knowles Carter‘s stylist, as well as costume designing the 2020 visual album, Black Is King, for which she won an Emmy in 2021. “Generally, many of these companies have benefitted from rap culture and imagery that we've created for them. We've created so much marketing for these companies and I'm just hoping that there continues to be real, sustainable change for them in the way that they shine light on our community.” Bethany Williams is a UK-based menswear designer with a focus on affecting social change. She founded her namesake label in 2017, won the Queen Elizabeth II Award in 2019 and the British Fashion Council and British Vogue Designer Fashion Fund in 2021. “For me, luxury is about having a product that you don't feel guilty owning. Luxury is about beautiful craftsmanship and the slowing down of the manufacturing process, working with artisans and supporting local community projects.” Fewocious is the youngest artist ever to be featured by Christie's — and the first to crash its site. He is one of the most successful and visible members of a growing community of crypto artists finding success in the NFT market, launching a shoe collaboration with design studio RTFKT earlier this year, with more than 600 pairs selling out in seven minutes and netting around $3.1 million. “With the NFT space, art can move. You can interact with art. There's programmable art, you can programme layers so that someone can change how your art looks [...]. There's so much I probably don't even know about yet, just because you can kind of do anything and figure out a way to attach an NFT to it, which I think is so rad and the future.” Follow the series to ensure you never miss an episode and discover actionable insights into the opportunities and challenges a redefined industry will bring and how luxury's transformation will impact your business. Last month, a new name entered the art discussion when a suite of five digital artworks sold in a special sale at Christie's auction house in New York for $2.1 million. And it's a name you might not expect: Fewocious. That's the nom de art of Victor Langlois, an 18-year-old Seattle artist, originally from a family of El Salvadoran immigrants in Las Vegas. Sold during Pride month, the opus is titled 'Hello, i'm Victor (FEWOCiOUS) and This Is My Life' and tells a very personal story. Via Fewocious's signature bright colors, graffiti-like text, and distorted faces, the work is about, as Christie's advertised it, "the journey through Fewocious teen years so far, growing up as a transgender male in an abusive household." In fact, it turns out that the works served as Victor's coming out as trans to the NFT world, at the same time making him the youngest artist ever to be sold at Christie's. Just a year ago, Fewocious was selling paintings for $95 online and just beginning to experiment with NFTs. Now, he's made a reported $16 million, and is the talk of the town. The market for digital collectibles is booming, but does it present a real opportunity for brands, or is it just a passing fad? When a shoe collaboration between design studio RTFKT and digital artist Fewocious netted around $3.1 million earlier this year, the fashion world sat up and paid attention. More than 600 pairs sold out in seven minutes. The shoes were issued as non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, unique digital assets authenticated by a digital ledger known as a blockchain. With appetites for unique virtual assets surging, more fashion companies are looking at how they can tap the market; even Rimowa is launching NFTs. But is this a long-term opportunity or just a passing fad? In the latest episode of The BoF Podcast, deputy editor Brian Baskin speaks with Benoit Pagotto, co-founder of RTFKT, Karinna Nobbs, co-CEO of NFT marketplace The Dematerialised, Amber Slooten, co-founder and creative director of digital fashion house The Fabricant and editorial associate M.C. Nanda about ways fashion can tap into the NFT gold rush. Virtual fashion isn’t just about gaming anymore, and that could open up a whole new marketplace for digital skins and on-trend avatars. “Within this new NFT space, people are starting to see the value of digital items,” said Slooten.”You’re able to sort of create that new, endless way of expressing yourself.” The fashion industry has yet to fully tap into the NFT opportunity, and doing so will mean becoming more open to collaborations. “Nobody [is] sharing anything with each other [in fashion] because they’re afraid it’s going to get stolen,” said Slooten. Proponents of NFTs say the recent boom is no flash in the pan, but a mark of a paradigm shift. “This is fundamentally going to change digital ownership, creative structures, the creative economy, how we view money even,” said Nobbs. “This is bigger than the Internet.” Related Articles: What the NFT Gold Rush Means for Fashion NFTs for Fashion: Fad or Opportunity?
