Michie, an incarcerated woman serving a life sentence at a Pennsylvania prison, learned early on that she needed to advocate for her own health behind bars. Over the decades and as she grew older, she says she witnessed many friends grow ill and die behind bars. Then, in her late 60's, she discovers that she too has breast cancer. As Michie recounts the challenges of getting older - and sicker - in prison, we explore the particular health challenges that older women face while incarcerated. This is part two of “Released To Die,” a three-part miniseries that explores what it means to have a chance to die free. Want to support our independent journalism? Now months out of prison, Frank Ross is juggling health issues and trying to adapt to life at the healthcare facility. He has good days and bad, as he struggles with cognitive decline. Then, an issue with his mandated GPS monitor suddenly puts his freedom at risk. We also learn about a new bill which advocates and lawmakers say could finally help reform the compassionate release system in Pennsylvania. They say it could help people like Frank Ross and ease the burden for the state, and help release older, sicker people whose healthcare needs they struggle to meet. This is the final episode of “Released To Die,” a three-part miniseries that explores what it means to have a chance to die free. On Monday, we got four more decisions from the nation's highest court, and they were… well, confusing. For example, the Supreme Court ruled that President Trump can fire federal independent agency commissioners, but he can't fire a governor at the Federal Reserve – which is also an independent agency. We also got a surprisingly good ruling on mail-in voting, and a separate victory for privacy and the Fourth Amendment. So is there any method to the seeming madness in the Supreme Court's decisions this term? To find out, we spoke to Kate Shaw. She's a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania and co-host of Crooked Media's Strict Scrutiny. And in headlines, Trump says the U.S. will meet with Iran in Qatar on Tuesday for further negotiations, Russian President Vladimir Putin admits Russia is facing fuel shortages in its war with Ukraine, and the WHO names Europe the fastest-warming continent on the planet.Show Notes: Check out Strict Scrutiny – youtube.com/channel/UCk-Km4tcqAbhpnbrvj1pJFw Call Congress – 202-224-3121 Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/y4y2e9jy What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcast Follow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/ For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Jeremy Phoenix aka Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen, aka Javos, a Navajo-born, Amish-country-raised, REI-employed, grave-digging, Princeton-attending thru-hiker who completed the Colorado Trail in 15 days on his first ever backpacking trip and has been making up for lost time ever since.  In this one, Smitty walks us through completing the 24-hour challenge three separate times on the PCT, a free solo fall from 35 feet- that he just kind of walked off, getting stalked by a mountain lion, surviving shin splints for almost the full PCT, and a harrowing midnight ice traverse below Mount Whitney with no traction. He also shares what it means to be Navajo in America, including having code talker grandparents and introducing himself to the land before every new section of trail.  We wrap the show with a tribute to longtime Patreon supporter Bill Jensen, who recently passed away on the CDT, the biggest thru-hiking preparation mistake- according to Peg Leg, addressing the question of which direction people predominantly face in the shower, and the triple crown of things you can easily live without but nonetheless should be free for everyone. Photo: MOUNT CARMEL, PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES - 2026/06/23: A yard sign opposing a planned data center is displayed along Route 54 in Mount Carmel Township Northumberland County. In Mount Carmel Township, grassroots opposition has surged as residents display yard signs and demand a multi-year moratorium to protect their community from a massive proposed AI data center campus. The local resistance is driven by severe concerns over potential noise pollution, the industrialization of local land, and a massive strain on the power grid and water supply that could trigger utility rate hikes and local rationing. The attack led to the first federal Antifa terrorism prosecution — and later convictions — in U.S. history.U.S. District Judge Mark T. Pittman sentenced ringleader Benjamin Hanil Song to 100 years in prison. Song was convicted of the most serious offenses in the case, including attempted murder and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. Prosecutors proved at trial that he shot Alvarado Police Lt. Thomas Gross in the neck during the Fourth of July attack last year.Bradford Morris, a trans militant and sex worker known as “Meagan Morris,” who lived in a Dallas commune with other trans individuals he referred to as his “wives,” was sentenced to 50 years. (The Kessler Heights neighborhood commune also functioned as one of the group's bases.)The defendants were among nine Antifa members convicted by a federal jury in March following the first federal Antifa terrorism trial in U.S. history. Their prison sentences are the longest in American history for convicted violent Antifa members.Feds Drop Hammer on 15 Minnesota Antifa Members Accused of Organized Anti-ICE Violence 15 members of an Antifa cell in the Twin Cities have been federally indicted over mass anti-ICE violence in JanuaryA federal grand jury has indicted 15 members and associates of a Twin Cities Antifa network accused of organizing violent coordinated efforts to obstruct U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Minnesota. The 94-page indictment charges the defendants with conspiracy to impede or injure federal agents and officers, alleging they worked together from January through June 2026 to prevent ICE and other Department of Homeland Security personnel from carrying out federal duties.A member of the cultlike Zizians group is charged in the killings of her parents in PennsylvaniaIn this image from video, Michelle Zajko, who authorities say is associated with a cultlike group known as Zizians, is escorted into court for a pretrial hearing in Cumberland, Maryland, on January 16, 2026.AP — A member of the cultlike group known as Zizians has been charged with murder in the shooting of her parents at their Pennsylvania home on her 30th birthday, and a prosecutor said Wednesday she wasn't acting alone.Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said evidence from a neighbor's doorbell camera, ballistics and analysis of cellphone records have left investigators certain Michelle Zajko is at least partly responsible for the deaths of her parents, Rita and Richard. They were shot in her childhood playroom on New Year's Eve 2022, surrounded by her old dolls and toys.“At this time we do not know who her co-conspirators were, but we are very certain that Michelle Zajko was in the home and arranged for the death of her parents,” Rouse said. The new charges against Zajko, who has been jailed in Maryland on other charges since February 2025, include murder, burglary and conspiracy charges in her parents' deaths. She has denied killing them, and in court filings suggested her father might have killed her mother and himself.“I didn't murder my parents,” she wrote in an April 2025 “ Open Letter to the World” that her attorney sent to The Associated Press.Authorities had long described Zajko as a person of interest. The two deaths are among six linked to the Zizians, a group of young, highly intelligent computer scientists who appear to share radical beliefs about veganism, animal rights, gender identity and artificial intelligence. Since 2022, members have been tied to the death of one of their own during an attack on a California landlord, the landlord's subsequent killing, the Zajkos' deaths in Pennsylvania, and a highway shootout in Vermont that left a border agent and another Zizian dead.Zizians face charges in multiple statesZajko, now 33, also is charged with providing the gun used to kill U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland in January 2025, though nothing has happened in that case. She was arrested in Maryland a few weeks later along with Daniel Blank and Jack “Ziz” LaSota, whom authorities describe as the group's leader. Police who responded to a landowner's complaint about suspicious people parked in box trucks on his property described them as having “ties with the Zizians Cult” and said they would be questioned about crimes across the country.Zajko had been estranged from her parents in the year leading up to their deaths, the prosecutor said. In a January 2022 text message to her father, she complained that her mother had “assumed the worst” about her since she was a child.“Every time I interact with mom in a nonsuperficial way she spends the time insulting a life she knows nothing about,” Zajko wrote. Hours before her death, Rita Zajko apologized to her daughter and wished her a happy birthday.“That text went unanswered,” Rouse said.Richard Zajko's sister-in-law, Roseanne Zajko, thanked police and prosecutors Wednesday, saying that her family has endured “countless days of darkness and despair” waiting for justice.SCOOP: Radical LGBQ and so-called “T” activists at a Pride event in Amarillo, TX, caught on camera ASSAULTING two Christian men

Today's Headlines: In a rare occurrence, we're starting with good news. The FDA approved a new drug called Trodelvy that reduces aggressive triple-negative breast cancer progression by 40% compared to chemo — affecting 48,000 Americans a year — science is awesome. Zohran Mamdani swept Tuesday's New York primaries, no he wasn't on the ballot but all three of his DSA-endorsed challengers defeated incumbent Democrats including Dan Goldman and Congressional Hispanic Caucus chair Adriano Espaillat, triggering a full Democratic Party freakout — Letitia James called out Mamdani on CNN, former DNC chair Jaime Harrison posted a barely-veiled "if you hate the party don't use its resources" thread, and Mamdani responded with a Jalen Brunson clip from the Knicks parade. In Trump shenanigans, Donald admitted at a Pennsylvania rally that he personally called the US attorney in California to "take a look" at the governor's primary results, claiming Steve Hilton started winning about an hour after the call, which is either a confession of election interference or the most casual admission of abuse of power we've heard yet. He then refused to sign the bipartisan housing bill his own White House negotiated unless Republicans first pass the SAVE Act to overhaul voting laws before the midterms, got into a screaming match with Bill Cassidy at a Senate lunch over the Iran war vote. As expected, Speaker Mike Johnson immediately announced he'd push the SAVE Act through budget reconciliation to appease him — which is not what budget reconciliation is for, but here we are. In other news, Pete Hegseth forced out highly respected four-star General Christopher Donohue, who headed the Army in Europe and Africa, with more "personnel changes" expected next week as Hegseth continues his speed run of replacing competent military commanders with pliant ones. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited the Oval Office, kissed Trump's ring, and had to sit there while Trump ranted for the fourth consecutive day about someone cutting the reflecting pool with a box cutter. And finally, Bending Spoons — the Italian tech company that owns Vimeo, WeTransfer, AOL, and Eventbrite — is planning a $19 billion US IPO. Electric transmission development is notoriously difficult, and these days, NIMBYism gets the brunt of the blame. But as data center loads surge and electricity prices climb, there's a new roadblock –  the messy world of multi-state cost allocation. The Mid-Atlantic Resiliency Link (MARL) — a planned 100-mile, $960 million transmission line stretching across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia — was approved by PJM in 2022 under standard rules that spread costs across the entire region. But that plan was made before ChatGPT took off and data center forecasts shot upwards.  Fast forward four years, and now state consumer advocates are asking why local ratepayers should foot the bill for an infrastructure project designed to feed data centers in northern Virginia. In this episode, Shayle sits down with Maeve Allsup, senior reporter at Latitude Media, to unpack her reporting on the project. They dive into how the rise of generative AI has disrupted traditional grid planning and explore why this challenge has proven to be such an impactful rate limiter for the AI boom. [Correction: In this episode, Shayle and Maeve refer to MARL as the Mid-Atlantic Reliability Line. The correct name is the Mid-Atlantic Resiliency Link. We regret the error.] Shayle and Maeve discuss topics like: - How a project approved in 2022 hit a vastly different policy and regulatory landscape by the time it reached state dockets - Why data center growth breaks the historic assumption that regional transmission costs eventually "even out" between states - How the Ratepayer Protection Pledge — a voluntary commitment signed by tech hyperscalers at the White House — is being harnessed by state advocates as a cudgel to demand data centers pay for grid upgrades - Why the United States has gone from building thousands of miles of transmission a decade ago to just hundreds today - How the intersection of local opposition and confusion over utility tariffs is delaying grid buildouts Resources - Latitude Media: How the Ratepayer Protection Pledge became a transmission hurdle in PJM - Latitude Media: FERC to grid operators: Connect large loads to transmission faster - Catalyst: Looking for a turnaround in transmission - Catalyst: The rise of flexible data centers - Catalyst: AI scaling pathways: On grid, on edge, off grid, off planet - Open Circuit: Grid utilization vs expansion: The 100 GW debate - Open Circuit: A five-alarm fire for the grid? As he struggles to stay sober and rebuild his reputation, Brockmire discovers that redemption is never as simple as calling the next game. The series mixes sports comedy with dark satire. Critics praised “Brockmire” throughout its four-season run, with particular acclaim going to Azaria's fearless performance and the show's razor-sharp writing. In Episode 3 of this series, Patrick begins by responding to excellent audience feedback on the 3-Voice Framework from Episode 2. He then highlights a recent Mormonism Live episode that makes a compelling case for the Book of Mormon as a 19th-century text, pointing to 34 doctrines from the early 1800s. But many of those doctrines appear directly connected to debates within Campbellism in Ohio and Pennsylvania—debates Sidney Rigdon was having with Alexander Campbell and Walter Scott. Should that raise new questions about Book of Mormon authorship? A future episode will explore the Campbellism connection more deeply. The heart of this episode focuses on stylometry, also known as wordprint analysis. Patrick explains how researchers create a digital profile of an author's unique writing habits, then reviews two of the eight major wordprint studies. The second study includes intriguing findings about Joseph Smith's personal writing style compared to the broader LDS canon—and even identifies a strange anomaly in the early Doctrine and Covenants during the Book of Mormon dictation period. Trump sounds energized at a Pennsylvania factory speech focused almost entirely on cost of living and border security, briefly noting gas prices are down 60 cents a gallon, while Marco Rubio reaffirms no country can charge tolls on the Strait of Hormuz and crude oil drifts back toward $73 a barrel. The Supreme Court rules 6-3 that DHS can strip green card holders of legal status if they travel abroad while facing pending criminal charges, while two separate district judges, Amy Berman Jackson and Sparkle Sooknanan, block other Trump administration policies on SNAP benefits and a federal citizenship verification database. Acting AG Todd Blanche announces 455 healthcare fraud defendants charged since June 8th totaling $6.5 billion in false claims, and acting DNI Bill Pulte reportedly begins mass layoffs of Tulsi Gabbard-aligned staff. Actor John C. On the latest episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, host John Jay Wiley welcomes Alex LeFever, a veteran 911 dispatcher who shares what many dispatchers have silently carried for years. The episode is available across major platforms including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, with highlights shared across their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles. His story reminds listeners that emotional scars don't require physical danger. Sometimes the deepest wounds are heard, not seen. The Calls That Never Leave Alex worked as a 911 dispatcher in both Arkansas and Pennsylvania. Like many emergency telecommunicators, thousands of calls blended together over time. But a few never disappeared. One involved a three-week-old baby. Another involved a woman trapped in a violent domestic abuse situation, who shot her attacker. Alex listened helplessly as the assault unfolded over the phone. Those voices never truly left him. "There are calls you never forget," Alex explains. "They stay with you long after your shift ends." Unlike police officers or firefighters who eventually arrive at a scene and begin resolving the crisis, dispatchers often experience something mental health experts call truncated trauma. 911 Dispatchers Suffer Too: Trauma on the Phone. Available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and most major Podcast networks. They hear the terror. They imagine the scene. Then the phone disconnects. Most never learn how the story ended. Many states, including California, Washington, and Delaware, have passed laws officially recognizing emergency dispatchers as first responders. Federal classifications have historically categorized them as administrative employees rather than protective service professionals. 911 Dispatchers Suffer Too: Trauma on the Phone. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. That distinction has sparked ongoing bipartisan efforts in Congress to update federal classifications through legislation such as the 9-1-1 SAVES Act and the Enhancing First Response Act. Regardless of job titles, dispatchers perform life-saving work every day. They calm panicked callers. Guide CPR. Provide emergency childbirth instructions. Coordinate police, fire, and EMS responses. Gather critical intelligence. Save lives. Long before emergency vehicles arrive, dispatchers are already working to keep victims alive. "They're often the first voice people hear during the worst moment of their lives." Trauma on The Phone Is Real Mental health professionals increasingly recognize that dispatchers experience extraordinarily high rates of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast continues bringing listeners real conversations from the front lines of crime, policing, trauma, survival, and healing. Unlike field responders, dispatchers experience trauma through sound alone. The human brain reacts as if it is physically present. Adrenaline surges. Heart rate increases. Stress hormones flood the body. Yet dispatchers must remain calm. Professional. Focused. They cannot panic. They cannot cry. They simply answer the next call. Hour after hour. Day after day. Over time, that emotional weight accumulates. Symptoms may include: • Reliving disturbing calls • Hearing callers' voices long after work • Difficulty concentrating • Hyper-vigilance • Emotional numbness • Burnout • Insomnia • High blood pressure • Chronic stress Many dispatchers suffer silently because few people understand what their job truly involves. 911 Dispatchers Suffer Too: Trauma on the Phone. The complete interview is available as a Free Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, LinkedIn, and major podcast platforms. Healing Doesn't Always Come Easy For Alex, recovery became intentional. He found one powerful outlet inside the gym. Weight training became more than exercise. It became therapy. "Training should enhance your life, not consume it," Alex says. His fitness journey actually began at just ten years old. By age seventeen, he had already set four International Powerlifting Association world records in the 198-pound class, including a remarkable 490-pound deadlift that stood for years. Today his philosophy is much different. Rather than chasing perfection, Alex helps people create sustainable health around real life. 911 Dispatchers Suffer Too: Trauma on the Phone. Listeners can hear the complete interview on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and other major Podcast, Radio, News, and Media platforms. "Life still needs to happen," he says. "Cake at birthday parties. Family dinners. Saturday morning French toast." Instead of unrealistic fitness expectations, Alex teaches balance. He specializes in helping first responders, shift workers, and everyday people overcome obstacles traditional fitness programs often ignore. Irregular schedules. Old injuries. Chronic stress. Sleep disruption. Mental fatigue. His coaching adapts to reality instead of demanding perfection. Supporting the People Behind the Headset Mental health experts continue emphasizing that dispatchers need the same support systems increasingly available to police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. The podcast is available on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, LinkedIn, and other major podcast platforms. Peer support. Critical incident debriefings. Professional counseling. Trauma education. Preventative mental health training. Organizations dedicated to dispatcher wellness continue advocating for stronger mental health resources while many states are expanding PTSD workers' compensation protections for emergency telecommunicators. 911 Dispatchers Suffer Too: Trauma on the Phone. Recognizing dispatcher trauma isn't simply about changing job titles. It's about acknowledging invisible injuries before they become life-changing ones. A Story Every First Responder Should Hear Alex LeFever's conversation offers an honest look inside one of public safety's least understood professions. Listen to the full story on the Free Podcast, available on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast Website, on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple, Spotify, and more. His story is about resilience. Trauma. Recovery. Fitness. Mental health. And recognizing that heroes aren't always the ones wearing body armor. Sometimes they're wearing a headset. Sometimes they're the calm voice who answers when someone dials three simple numbers. Bound Together by GraceNo one chooses the road of suffering, but sometimes God allows fellow travelers to ease the way. That was true for the Maxwell and White families. When their stories were marked by separate tragedies in 2025, they found themselves walking similar paths of loss, recovery, faith, and hope. Along the way, they discovered the strength of Christian community and the comfort that comes when God's people carry one another's burdens. On January 29, 2025, Dean and Merav Maxwell lost their daughter, Grace, a Cedarville University student, in the American Airlines crash over the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Just weeks later, on March 9, fellow Cedarville student Judah White was aboard a private plane that crashed shortly after takeoff in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. All five on board — Judah, his parents Matt and Trish, along with his sister Aliyah and her friend — survived, but both Judah and Matt sustained severe injuries that led to months of surgeries, recovery, and rehabilitation. While the circumstances differed, both families suddenly found themselves relying on the Lord — and each other — in ways they never imagined.Though one family was grieving a devastating loss and the other was facing a long road to recovery, both found themselves sustained by God's faithfulness expressed through His people.Family and friends carried much of the day-to-day burden, showing up with meals, helping hands, and willing hearts. Churches prayed and stood beside them through long and difficult days. Meanwhile, a wave of encouragement flowed from people they had never met, including Cedarville students, alumni, faculty, staff, and parents. For the Maxwells, much of that support came through stories about Grace.Grace was tenacious, disciplined, and exceptionally bright. An engineering student with a quick wit and a deep love for learning, she could have attended many universities, but she chose Cedarville because she wanted a place where she could grow in her faith while pursuing academic excellence. As they navigated grief and recovery, the two families found encouragement from one another. Their connection grew through the Cedarville community that had united around them, first in mourning the loss of Grace and then in praying for Judah and his family after the Lancaster crash. Together, they found strength in the prayers and support surrounding them.Recently, Dean, Merav, and Trish reflected on that journey during the Cedarville Stories podcast, sharing how God met them in difficult days through the faithfulness of His people. The road has not been easy. Yet both families have seen God's hand through the kindness of friends, the faithfulness of family, and the encouragement of a University community that cared enough to reach out, even from afar. Their story is a reminder that God often brings comfort through fellow travelers and that even in life's hardest moments, He remains faithful.https://share.transistor.fm/s/c4148f56https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOb7nGa1bV4

The U.S. has lifted oil sanctions on Iran for the first time in decades, letting Tehran sell its oil openly at higher prices meant to push Iran to comply on its nuclear program, even as the two sides are already split over whether Iran agreed to let inspectors back in. President Trump heads to Pennsylvania today to talk up the economy and his promise that gas and grocery prices will fall now that the war is ending, but his approval is at record lows with even some Republicans unhappy over his handling of the economy. And a federal judge in Minnesota threw out grand jury subpoenas from the Trump administration, ruling they were used to harass and retaliate against state and local officials who wouldn't help carry out the president's immigration crackdown.Want more analysis of the most important news of the day, plus a little fun? Subscribe to the Up First newsletter.Today's episode of Up First was edited by Tina Kraja, Rebekah Metzler, Cheryl Corley, Mohamad ElBardicy, and John Stolnis. It was produced by Ziad Buchh and Nia Dumas. Our director is Christopher Thomas. We get engineering support from Neisha Heinis. Beau Martonik sits down with Johnny Stewart -- a PA-based DIY public land hunter with 30+ years of big woods experience across Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, West Virginia, Ohio, and North Dakota. This one is all about summer scouting. Johnny breaks down how he runs trail cameras from April through September purely for inventory (confirming a buck survived the winter), why he almost never moves cameras in summer even if they are not producing, and the pattern he and Beau figured out for why bucks vanish from cuts the moment archery season opens. Turns out it is not always pressure. Sometimes it comes down to food, and not the food sources you would expect. They also dig into the mature forest / mature buck correlation -- including a story about a late-season WV buck that left his bed specifically to eat shelf mushrooms off a downed cherry log -- glassing velvet bucks from road vantage points, and Johnny's philosophy on mid-October scouting and hunting where the deer isn't. Plus gear talk on the Timber Ninja Kunai and new Mini Kunai, the advantage of hunting with a cameraman, and a teaser on a University of Georgia study showing that fresh scrapes glow in UV light. No breaking Pittsburgh Steelers news? That's when our show gets the most honest. We're back in the basement, catching up with the Footballing family, and we start with the one Steelers moment that actually deserves the spotlight: Pat Freiermuth getting married. We send a real congratulations, then pivot into what we do best when the offseason goes quiet, telling stories and hanging out like you're sitting right here with us. We bring back the beer segment with two very different pours: a Western American lager that takes Ben straight back to Estes Park, Colorado, and a “Beer Flavored Beer” sent in from Allusion Brewing Company in Pennsylvania. The beer talk turns into the kind of unexpectedly fun rabbit hole we love, including a legit question: why do some beer steins have lids, and what does that say about the history of drinking culture? From there, it's camp stories from Wind River Ranch and a faith-based retreat that mixes family time, teaching, worship, and the kind of challenge you can't fake. Ben tells the egg toss story that ends in a brutal loss at the worst possible moment, then walks through a 3:45am hike in the dark to a sunrise summit over 11,000 feet. We talk altitude, heart rates, carrying everyone's water, kids sprinting ahead like mountain goats, and the simple “mountains and valleys” metaphor that sticks with you long after the trip ends. If you like Steelers podcasts with personality, craft beer reviews, and real-life lessons that land, hit play. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs a laugh, and leave a review with your own best hiking or game-day fail story.

What happens when a trusted Mormon leader learns about child sexual abuse –and choses not to report it? In this powerful and heartbreaking episode, Rebecca Gooden and her son Matthew share their family's story of abuse, betrayal, and institutional failure within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Years after discovering that her husband, Shawn Gooden, had sexually abused two of her younger brothers, Rebecca found herself confronting a devastating reality: church leaders had known about the abuse and failed to act. Despite allegations involving child sexual abuse, Shawn continued to receive leadership callings, serving in bishoprics, high councils, and eventually as a bishop and stake presidency counselor. The story becomes even more troubling when Pennsylvania Stake President Rhett Hintze learned of the abuse in 2020. As a mandatory reporter under Pennsylvania law, Hintze was later charged with failure to report child abuse. Although the charges were ultimately dropped, many questions remain about how church leaders handled the case, why victims received little to no support, and why Hintze was later promoted to an Area Seventy. Throughout this interview Rebecca and Matthew discuss Shawn Gooden's abuse and eventual excommunication, the impact of abuse on victims and families, mandatory reporting laws and clergy responsibilities, how the Church handles abuse allegations, the doctrine of discernment, and institutional cover-ups. They also discuss why they ultimately stepped away from the Mormon church and Rebecca shares how she has now moved closer to healing, self-discovering (now calling herself Eloise), and greater empowerment. This episode explores difficult but important questions about accountability, victim protection, and whether religious institutions truly prioritize the vulnerable when abuse is reported. If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, we encourage you to contact local authorities, licensed therapists, and survivor support organizations. ___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.  Our overall mission is to: 1. Shattering the Myth of Hessian Invincibility at the Battle of Trenton. Guest: Professor Richard Bell. King George III rented 30,000 German soldiers, known as Hessians, to crush the American insurgency, leading to widespread patriot terror. Washington's victory at Trenton was a crucial symbolic blow that proved these "savage cutthroats" were human and defeatable. Following their capture, Hessian prisoners were sent to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where they were encouraged to desert or defect to the American cause. This strategy resulted in 5,000 desertions, with many Hessians eventually becoming naturalized citizens and even contributing to early American culture, such as writing the unofficial national anthem. 518181

Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: December 06, 2021Weird Darkness moves through four shades of the unexplained in this episode: the unseen voices and strangers that talk people out of crimes and catastrophes, the demon that lived under two sisters' bed in Texas, the 1928 witch-killing that gave a Pennsylvania hollow its name, and the still-contested death of Marilyn Monroe. It opens with a run of first-person accounts pulled from Reddit, each describing the moment something unseen stepped in to stop a crime or a catastrophe. A burglar hiding in the closet of an elderly woman's house watches a ghostly old man pat a departing paramedic on the back, then feels breath on the neck and a voice ordering the intruder out. Middle-schoolers creeping through their darkened school are warned off by a voice none of them claims, and they avoid a library that proved to be wired with a silent alarm and motion detectors. In California, a fourteen-year-old abandons a car-theft job a mile from the pickup, spooked by a rising sense of dread, and later learns the vehicle was bait in a police sting that swept up everyone else sent after it. A pickpocket lifts a wallet clean off a stranger, only for the man — blind, sunglasses raised — to calmly ask for it back. Threaded among them are a blown tire that derails a despairing teenager's suicide plan, church doors that lock the instant two thieves reach for them, and a Hobby Lobby shopper whose five stolen pieces of balsa wood seem to trail straight to a table saw and a flesh-eating MRSA infection. From there the episode turns to a listener named Atreada, who shared a room and a bed with her older sister in SunRay, Texas. For a week the bed shook hard enough to slam against the wall and wake the whole house, blamed each night on two children supposedly roughhousing. On the fourth night a hand rose from the gap between bed and wall as an evil laugh filled the room, and on the last night the sisters aimed a flashlight and saw the thing climb out and bolt — an old man in rags, barefoot, with glowing eyes, talon-like fingers, broken teeth, ears jutting at odd angles, and thin transparent strands hanging from an otherwise bald, corpse-like head.Next comes the true story behind Spring Valley County Park in York County, Pennsylvania, a place once called Hex Hollow. In 1928 a Powwow folk-magic practitioner named John Blymire became convinced he was cursed, and a witch called Nellie Noll — the Marietta River Witch — named Nelson Rehmeyer as the source. To break the hex, Blymire needed a lock of Rehmeyer's hair and his copy of The Long Lost Friend, an 1820 spellbook by John George Hohman. On November 26, 1928, Blymire and two accomplices, John Curry and Wilbert Hess, beat Rehmeyer to death in his home and tried to burn it down; the house refused to burn, which locals took as proof of his power. Blymire and Curry drew life sentences and Hess ten to twenty years, and the surviving hex house opened as a museum in 2007 — its story helping to inspire horror novelist Brian Keene and Shane Free's 2015 documentary on the killing. The episode closes with the death of Marilyn Monroe, found nude and lifeless in her Brentwood home in the early hours of August 5, 1962, a telephone in her hand and empty pill bottles on the nightstand. The official verdict was probable suicide by barbiturate overdose, but Sergeant Jack Clemmons, the first officer on the scene, found no glass or water for swallowing some sixty pills, no vomit, and housekeeper Eunice Murray running laundry while the body lay cooling. Thomas Noguchi's autopsy turned up lethal levels of Nembutal and chloral hydrate in her blood and liver, yet not a trace in her stomach. Witnesses placed Attorney General Robert Kennedy at the house that day and again near 10 p.m., tied to rumors of a red diary detailing her affairs with Robert and President John F. Kennedy and referencing a plot against Castro. A competing account, advanced years later by a Court TV investigation, holds that her psychiatrist Ralph Greenson gave her a chloral hydrate enema to wean her off Nembutal, unaware that her internist Hyman Engelberg was still prescribing it, and that the fatal drug interaction — not the Kennedys, and not her own hand — is what killed her.
