This week, our hosts Dave Bittner, Joe Carrigan, and Maria Varmazis (also host of the T-Minus Space Daily show) are back sharing the latest in social engineering scams, phishing schemes, and criminal exploits that are making headlines. We start with some follow-up from listener Abdussobur, who wonders if a pair of suspicious text messages—one sent to his wife and another to him with a nearby address—could be the result of a data breach. Joe's story is on a surge of financial aid fraud where identity thieves, often using AI chatbots as “ghost students,” are enrolling in online college courses to steal federal funds—leaving real people like Heather Brady and Wayne Chaw with fake loans and months of bureaucratic cleanup. Dave's got the story on how the FIN6 cybercriminal group is posing as job seekers on LinkedIn to trick recruiters into opening malware-laced resumes, using deceptive tactics like fake portfolio sites and the MoreEggs backdoor to steal credentials and launch ransomware attacks. Maria's story is on a Pennsylvania woman who scammed over $800,000—nearly $466,000 from a Cedar Rapids church—by hacking emails and rerouting payments, claiming she did it under the direction of a famous British actor she was allegedly dating. Our catch of the day is on a convincing but bogus text claiming an overdue traffic fine under a fake regulation—complete with threats of license suspension and credit damage—all designed to trick recipients into clicking a malicious link. This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by some family for a bear hunting conversation. The family guests are his younger cousins Jacob, Josh, and Isaac Mengel, who've recently begun a journey of starting their own bear hunt tradition at their cabin in northern PA. Previously their camp did not have a consistent tradition of hosting a bear hunt, and the times it did turned into solo endeavors. For the last four hunting seasons, they have started their mission to learn how to bear hunt their historic hunting grounds, and how to do it with a group. The guys share their experiences of how they got started, the obstacles along the way, the mess ups, and the successes, including Isaac's first bear harvested from a drive with only five people! Would you be surprised to hear that your favorite shoe brand is neither family-owned nor as punk as it portrays itself to be?Did you know that wealth inequality and shoes are directly connected? Could your latest shoe purchase be subsidizing lobbying efforts to fight a rise in the minimum wage or reduce taxes for the wealthiest people?Amanda is joined by Ariel, the founder of Cobbled Goods to talk about how shoes, wealth inequality, and politics are entangled. He will introduce us to his Billionaire Boycott List. In this episode, we will also cover the following topics:The environmental and ethical impacts of shoe productionCommon greenwashing tropes used by the shoe industryWho really owns a lot of the shoe companies that we might think of "heritage" brands or "countercultural"How you can make better decisions when shopping for a new pair of shoesAnd how where, when, and how often you shop are political decisions! And guess what? I alluded to it a bit with the HIGG index, but I meant to dive deeper because it is highly prevalent.Money Heist: COVID-19 Wage Theft in Global Garment Supply ChainsA report on how big brands dodge accountability to the workers making their products. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is intensifying enforcement of English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards as of June 25, 2025, which could lead to the immediate grounding of truck drivers who do not meet Department of Transportation requirements. This move is expected to shrink the pool of qualified drivers, creating capacity constraints, increasing tender rejections, and driving national truckload rates higher, with the National Truckload Index currently at $2.27 per mile. In other news, Relay Payments is expanding its services beyond fuel payments into repair and maintenance, announcing partnerships with Southern Tire Mart at Pilot, Boss Truck Shops, and AMBEST Service Centers, collectively offering over 235 locations. This initiative aims to streamline payment processes for carriers and improve workflows for merchants by utilizing digital RelayCodes, allowing fleets to consolidate all over-the-road expenses on a single platform. Turning our eyes skyward, FedEx has retired a dozen freighter aircraft, including Airbus A300s, MD-11s, and Boeing 757-200s, as part of an effort to streamline its air network and modernize its fleet, taking a $21 million impairment charge. While flying less domestically after its USPS contract ended, FedEx is focusing on efficient widebody freighters and plans further acquisitions of Boeing 777s and ATR 72-600 turboprops to meet strong international parcel demand and boost efficiency. On the ground in the food sector, a wave of layoffs and closures is hitting major food retailers, distributors, and producers across the U.S., with over 1,500 job cuts announced since early May. Companies affected include United Natural Foods Inc., which is closing a distribution center in Pennsylvania and cutting 716 jobs; Albertsons, which laid off 275 corporate employees and plans to close a grocery store in Portland, Oregon; and Amazon Fresh, which shuttered a grocery location near Seattle with 125 job losses. In the maritime realm, Federal Maritime Commission Chairman Louis Sola announced he is stepping down as his carryover term expires this month, having served since 2018 as a Trump appointee. Sola played a key role in safeguarding the U.S. maritime industry, bringing greater transparency to port operations, and overseeing a supply chain that moves more than $5 trillion in goods annually, including leading an investigation that resulted in the de-flagging of 140 sanctioned vessels. The Ports of Indiana are partnering with Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) to restart operations at the Burns Harbor grain terminal on Lake Michigan, a crucial asset for Midwest grain exports since its opening in 1979. LDC, one of the world's "big four" global agri-commodities companies, plans to begin operating the terminal in early 2026, aiming to boost grain exports and provide vital market access for regional farmers. Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: June 35, 2025Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS8: E10: Rikki Rockett (Poison) - Greatest Hits and Hardest BattlesSHOW SUMMARY:What happens when death stares you in the face, and you not only survive but thrive? Rikki Rockett, the original drummer of hair metal legends Poison, takes us on an extraordinary journey through his remarkable life both on and off the stage in this candid conversation. With disarming honesty, Rikki shares the terrifying moment when what seemed like a simple sore throat turned into a stage four cancer diagnosis with just a 10% chance of survival. His miraculous recovery through an innovative immunotherapy clinical trial not only saved his life but also transformed his perspective completely. "You can have 99 problems, but if you have a medical problem, you got one," he reflects, explaining how facing mortality taught him to value time above all else. Long before his health battle, Rikki's musical journey began in Pennsylvania with a $50 drum set and dreams of rock stardom. He takes us through Poison's early days hustling on the Sunset Strip, revealing the ingenious guerrilla marketing tactics they employed—from personally thanking fans at venue exits to strategically writing about themselves in club bathrooms. These authentic connections helped Poison stand apart in the overcrowded LA scene of the 1980s. Beyond his rock credentials, Rikki unveils his fascinating life as a fourth-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and paranormal investigator. His approach to urban legends and ghost hunting reflects his thoughtful nature, seeking the historical facts behind myths before exploring any supernatural elements. "I think 98% of it is BS, but that 2% is truly amazing," he explains, showing the same curiosity that's driven his diverse passions. Looking ahead to Poison's 40th anniversary in 2026, Rikki shares plans for a major tour with all original members intact—a remarkable achievement in the often-fractured world of rock bands. Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering his story for the first time, Rikki Rockett's tale of resilience, creativity, and constant reinvention will inspire you to approach life's challenges with both determination and wonder.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist(s) Web PageInstagram - @rikkirockettFacebook - @thereallrikkirockettYoutube - @theposiondrummerCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. In November 2022, four University of Idaho students—Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves—were found brutally murdered in an off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho. The suspect, Bryan Kohberger, was arrested in late December 2022.Key evidence in the case includes DNA found on a knife sheath left at the crime scene, which matched DNA from Kohberger's family's trash in Pennsylvania. Surveillance footage traced a white Hyundai Elantra, owned by Kohberger, near the crime scene around the time of the murders. Additionally, cell phone records showed Kohberger's phone was near the victims' residence on multiple occasions prior to the murders, though it was turned off during the time the murders occurred.Kohberger, a criminology Ph.D. student at Washington State University, exhibited an interest in criminal psychology and crime scene analysis. He has pleaded not guilty and his defense suggests he was out driving at the time of the murders. Now, after the relase of a book detailing the murders by author Howard Blum, the Gocalves family is bashing that book and saying it's a work of fiction. In our second article, we get an update on what we might expect today at Bryan Kohberger's hearing.(commercial at 8:07)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Bryan Kohberger Book Slammed By Victim's Family - Newsweek
Immediately after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court case that overturned Roe v. Wade, shock, sadness, and anger were predominant. But even still, abortion providers, abortion fund workers, and other advocates and leaders in the field provided, facilitated, and fought for access to care. Carole Joffe, professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of California, San Francisco and professor emerita of sociology at UC Davis, and David Cohen, law professor at Drexel's Klein School of Law in Philadelphia and pro bono counsel to a number of Pennsylvania abortion clinics, sit down to talk with us about their book, After Dobbs: How the Supreme Court Ended Roe but not Abortion.Since Dobbs, abortion numbers have gone up, likely related to impassioned grassroots advocacy, media coverage, fundraising, and the help of abortion funds and patient navigators. Some additional developments since Dobbs include providers moving their offices to different states and abortion pills becoming increasingly depended on. In addition, some similarities in both legal ruling and repeal of bodily autonomy can be drawn between Dobbs and the recent, devastating Supreme Court ruling, United States v. Skrmetti, which upheld Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors. For more information, check out Boom! SEASON 3 EPISODE 140: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: We join the Trump Dictatorship, already in progress. He has attacked Iran, declared undeclared war on Iran, denied he wanted regime change there and is now insisting there should be regime change. And it's all because he has lost America. The Economist polling that has his OVERALL approval underwater in FIFTEEN states… that HE WON LAST YEAR. SEVEN under in Pennsylvania, FOUR under in Georgia, FOUR under in North Carolina, eight under in Michigan, eight under in Pennsylvania. Even CNN’s pollster Harry Enten says “I think we can say Trump has lost the political battle when it comes to what has happened in Los Angeles." CNN has Trump at -15 approval on his key issue: immigration, and -24 among independents. Trump attacked Iran because he has lost America. As a political observer wrote on January 17, 2012, “Obama will attack Iran in order to get re-elected.” And the SAME political observer wrote on October 9, 2012, “Now that Obama’s poll numbers are in tailspin watch for him to launch a strike in Libya or Iran. He is desperate.” And the SAME political observer then wrote on September 16 2013 “I predict that President Obama will at some point attack Iran in order to save face,” and as the SAME political observer wrote on September 25, 2013 “Remember what I previously said, Obama will some day attack Iran in order to show how tough he is,” and how finally that SAME political observer wrote on November 10 2013 “Remember that I predicted a long time ago that President Obama will attack Iran because of his inability to negotiate properly – not skilled” – and that political observer was… Donald J. Trump. I'll analyze the consequences of Trump's unconstitutional act - including angering Putin - and the hilarious moment when Pete Hegseth got the location of the target wrong. Plus Trump's nonsensical "I'd especially like to thank God," his lies about being opposed to Iraq, and the small victory: the Senate parliamentarian says they have to strip from the budget bill the move to limit the courts' ability to restrain Trump. B-Block (37:32) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: It's like Champions Week on Jeopardy: Mayor Eric Adams keeps digging, Jake Tapper keeps digging, and Stephen A. Smith is digging so hard to align himself with the reprehensible Candace Owens that at this rate Smith will be forcing ESPN to fire him. C-Block (50:45) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Of all the things you don't expect to come up on Jason Benetti's Detroit Tigers telecast is not one but two ex-pitchers confessing they still have dreams - thirty years later - that the anthem is playing, they are supposed to be pitching, but they cannot find their uniforms or that their shoelaces have been tied together. I'll explain why the mini-PTSD dream has become a nostalgic dream for these guys from my cohort: Frank Tanana, Dan Petry, and me.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From wiki: “Night of the Living Dead is a 1968 American independent zombie horror film directed, photographed, and edited by George A. Romero, written by Romero and John Russo, produced by Russell Streiner and Karl Hardman, and starring Duane Jones and Judith O'Dea. The story follows seven people trapped in a farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania, under assault by flesh-eating reanimated corpses. Although the monsters that appear in the film are referred to as "ghouls", they are credited with popularizing the modern portrayal of zombies in popular culture.”Also discussed: Drusilla's new house, Clash of the Titans and Ray Harryhausen, Showgirls and gay people, Pavements the Pavement doc, Train to Busan, Diary of the Dead, Army of the Dead, World War Z, Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead, and more! Rather than conform to the pop country trends that didn't fit his rock-infused vocal style, he chose the harder path of staying true to himself. "I'll be damned if I'm gonna go out and play shit that I hate," he candidly shares, revealing the courage required to maintain artistic integrity in an ever-changing industry.Perhaps most moving is Ben's decade-long commitment to performing at state prisons throughout Pennsylvania. These raw, vulnerable performances connected his music with men at their lowest moments, demonstrating music's power to transcend circumstances. When an inmate who'd been incarcerated for 20 years told Ben his songs "changed my whole outlook on life," it crystallized why authenticity in music matters so deeply. Now working with producer and beloved TTIAST co-host Neil Thrasher, Ben continues crafting music that honors his distinctive sound – guitar-driven, melodically rich, and genuinely reflective of who he is as an artist. His new EP featuring the single "Bullet" showcases this commitment, while his partnership with Thrasher promises even more honest, compelling music on the horizon.Ready to experience what happens when authentic country meets rock-infused guitar work? Listen to Ben Gallaher's music, watch his powerful "Bullet" video, and witness an artist who understands that in music, as in life, the journey matters as much as the destination. The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces! An exploration of the mind of one of America's most beloved Founding Fathers and most brilliant minds, through the books he read and his social circles in the United States and Europe. Arguably the most intellectual, creative, cosmopolitan, and curious of the Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin is the only top-tier Founder not to have served as president. Despite not becoming the Chief Executive, Franklin played an active role in American politics and served the aspiring and young United States in the key European capitals. His prodigious reading and appetite for learning are epic. As he did in works about Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, Kevin J. Hayes interprets the life and mind of Franklin through what he read. Undaunted Mind: The Intellectual Life of Benjamin Franklin (Oxford University Press, 2025) tells the story of the development of Franklin's intellect, starting with the earliest books he read as a child before examining his formal schooling and his independent study after his father pulled him from school. As an apprentice in his brother's printing house, Franklin's intellectual life developed through his contact with the Couranteers, the group of his brother's friends who contributed to his newspaper, and through his attention to his brother's excellent office library. After Franklin ran away to Philadelphia, he developed a new group of friends, all of whom loved reading. In many ways, the story of Franklin's intellectual odyssey is the story of the friends he made along the way. His time in London in his late teens introduced him to several important intellectuals who encouraged him to develop his mind. After returning to Philadelphia from London, he and some friends formed the Junto, a club for mutual improvement that made reading and writing important activities. With other members of the Junto, he formed the Library Company of Philadelphia, the first subscription library in colonial America. His role as a printer put him in contact with the best eighteenth-century American writing and kept a steady flow of imported books coming from Britain. He became a scientist, assembling a great scientific library, which helped his electrical research. An educational reformer, Franklin founded the Philadelphia Academy, which would become the University of Pennsylvania. As agent for the Pennsylvania Assembly, Franklin lived in London for many years, where he befriended some of Britain's greatest minds. Different concentrations of books in his library reveal Franklin's interests in travel and exploration, warfare, and slavery. His time in Paris toward the end of his life gave Franklin another great intellectual experience, but he ultimately returned home to live the last five years of his life in Philadelphia, where he imparted his knowledge and experience to a new generation of Americans. In this gripping work, Benjamin Franklin is given a biography as rich and complex as his own intellectual life by master literary historian Kevin J. Hayes. Kevin J. Hayes is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Central Oklahoma. Caleb Zakarin is editor of the New Books Network. Learn more about your ad choices.
