The Wellness Paradox
The Fitness Industry's Role in Addressing the Physical Literacy Crisis w/Dr. Anthony Moreno

The Wellness Paradox

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2022 54:50

The concept of literacy is not foreign to anyone. Indeed, we all realize the importance of the ability to read and write in terms functioning in the world. Lack of literacy is considered a societal tragedy that the developed world attempts to avoid at all costs. When basic literacy is lacked within an individual (or population) life closes in and gets very small, achievement is limited, and life lacks fulfillment and a sense of purpose. All consequences that should be avoided at all costs. Although we're all very familiar with the concept of academic literacy, physical literacy is a term that many of us might find confusing or odd at first glance. This is mostly because the term has been underutilized and to the detriment of our society and our health, as physical literacy researcher and advocate Dr. Anthony Moreno explains in episode 40 of the Wellness Paradox Podcast. Just as academic literacy involves learning the basic set of skills an individual can take into the rest of their life to be literate in reading and writing, physical literacy does that same thing, but in a physical domain. Instead of spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension, physical literacy focuses on the motor skills associated with physical movement. When someone develops and fosters these skills at a young age (really any age) and maintains them throughout the lifespan their opportunities to be healthy, fulfilled and engage with the world expand exponentially. At the same time their level of disease and illness decrease dramatically. The tragic and objective reality is we currently have a very physical illiterate society. Physical education classes are being phased out of schools and/or taught by unqualified staff. Youth sports are becoming increasingly competitive, where only the best athletes have the ability to play frequently. Over 75% of Americans DO NOT meet the current physical activity recommendations for aerobic and muscle strengthening exercise. No matter how you view it, our society is physically illiterate and becoming more so by the day as technology makes our lives more sedentary. Just as with academic literacy, when this happens; life closes in and gets very small, achievement is limited, and life lacks fulfillment and a sense of purpose, mostly driven by ill-health. There is a solution to a population-based approach to becoming more physically literate as a society and it starts with fitness pros and fitness clubs. The fitness industry and its professionals have the infrastructure, knowledge, and resources to implement many of the existing government guidance to improve physical activity levels and thereby physical literacy. In this podcast Dr. Moreno explores this concept further as well as actionable steps (pun intended) the health/fitness industry can take today to combat the physical literacy crisis in America. Our Guest: Dr. Anthony Moreno, PhDDr. Tony Moreno is a Professor of Kinesiology at Eastern Michigan University with focus in biomechanics, youth sport, and pediatric exercise science. He has authored educational materials regarding athlete development, physical literacy, performance enhancement, and injury prevention for the Michigan High School Athletic Association, USA Lacrosse, USA Ultimate, USA Hockey, the Society of Health and Physical Educators, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. In addition, Professor Moreno is the proprietor of Atletika USA, a movement, physical activity, and sport programming consulting firm based in mid-Michigan. Professor Moreno holds graduate adjunct faculty positions at both Michigan State University and West Virginia University and was recently appointed to serve on both the Michigan Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health, and Sports, on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Fitness Foundation, and on the Medical/Science Advisory Board for the Michigan Fitness Club Association.

The 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing are underway and - as I write this - Norway is at the top of the medal standings. Again. Norway is a bit of an anomaly: it's a relatively small country at 5.3 million people (which ranks it #119 in the world based on population size), yet somehow it is an Olympic beast. Prior to the games in Beijing beginning, Norway had 368 medals at the Winter Olympic Games (132 gold, 125 silver, 111 bronze). That count ranks them in the number one spot in all-time medal winners at the Winter Olympics, ahead of the United States (305) and Germany (240). So what's going on here? What makes Norway so successful at the Olympics and what can we - as physical educators - take away from their approach? In this episode, I'll be breaking down Norway's philosophy of "The Joy Of Sport For All" and sharing what PE can take away from the nation's approach to create safer, friendlier, more meaningful experiences for our students.

In this episode, I speak to triathlete and author Brock Gibbs. Brock is a 2 time Top 10 Finisher, in his Age Group, at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Recently, Brock released My Coworkers Think I'm a Pro which provides a witty and entertaining account of how Brock got started in the sport of triathlon.During the day Brock is a Physical Educator teacher in Montreal, Canada. He was introduced to triathlon in his 40s. Growing up in Canada, Brock played hockey through school as well as football and baseball. He started running in college, even participating on his school's Cross Country team.I spend a few minutes complementing Brock on his book, specifically on his ability to paint a vivid picture with his words. Brock shares the story of how he met Lionel Sanders at an Ironman 70.3 early in both of their careers and he explains the metaphor that he uses for the times in your life when “bad stuff happens and you gotta to let it go.”While being very close in age and physical appearance, we talk about some similarities that we share and some of our differences. Brock gives some context into the cover photo for his book. After acknowledging that he has always been a “fast runner,” Brock talks about his 1st marathon; one in which he would qualify for the Boston Marathon. We talk about how Brock has always trained by feel as opposed to a structured pace and he shares how he has modified that over the years. He acknowledges that he no longer runs everyday and breaks down his approach to his two sessions per day training regimen.I ask him about his thoughts on triathlon being the only sport where an amateur can complete on the same course at the same time as the pros. We discuss our thoughts on why triathletes, even professional triathletes, are more approachable than in other sports. Brock even points out that you can pick up a good amount of race strategy while standing in line at the porta potty, pre-race.I get the opportunity to share some of my favorite quotes from Brock's book and there are a bunch in there. And Brock explains what prompted him to write the book and talks us through some of the process it took from initial though to publication. We spend a few minutes talking about some of the childhood stories that Brock included in the book. Growing up in a small town in the 1980s allowed he and his friends plenty of opportunity to do fun stuff. We agree that most of the time fun stuff means the same as dangerous stuff. That conversation transitions nicely into Brock sharing about his most recent mishap.During this year's Ironman 70.3 World Championship, Brock was involved in a single bike accident that would leave in with a compound fracture of his collar bone and broken pelvis. Rob acknowledges that this incident placed him in a situation where he was forced to accept help from others, something that he is not normally comfortable doing. After getting Brock to acknowledge is a fast runner, I ask him to rate his swim and bike performance. Brock recommends that seeking out specialized coaching if you're struggling with one particular discipline. And of course, we talk bikes. Brock shares he has future plans to ride a traditional road bike versus a TT bike due to certain advantages. If you haven't already, be sure to get your copy of Brock's book My Coworkers Think I'm A Pro. Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning
Brain Fact Friday on "How to Be a Neuroscience Researcher in 4 Simple Steps"

Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 16, 2021 8:25

Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, for Brain Fact Friday and episode #124. If you’ve been listening to this podcast, called Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning, I’m sure you’ve made the connection with the importance of improving our social and emotional skills, in our schools and otherwise called emotional intelligence skills in the workplace with an understanding of how our brain works. This week we interviewed Professor Chuck Hillman, from Northeastern University, and he mentioned that an important concept he would like to see in the future, would be more people like Paul Zientarski, who built his career with the application of Professor Hillman’s brain research. Today’s Brain Fact Friday will teach you how to do this. If you’re interested in how you could be this person in your school or workplace, who could spearhead the implementation of these new evidence-based ideas, I’ll show you how simple it can be so that you can be confident that what you are sharing with your schools or teams is accurate, and not pseudoscience.  In 2014, when an educator urged me to add the most current neuroscience research to my programs, I had to quickly learn about the brain and be sure what I was learning was accurate. I didn’t go to school for a degree in Neuroscience which is one route I highly suggest especially through Butler University’s Applied Educational Neuroscience Graduate Program Certificate with Dr. Lori Desautels[i]. I went another route, and found the leading neuroscience researcher, Mark Waldman[ii]  to teach me all he knew and later joined his Neuroscience Certification Program[iii] so I could share the most accurate research with others and stay up to date, since this information is always advancing and changing. This is exactly what Paul Zientarski had to do when he began to learn how the brain works from Professor Hillman’s research. Once you have an understanding of how the brain works, and know where to look to attach the most current research studies for your hypothesis, or something you are interested in sharing with others, it’s really not that difficult. We can all be neuroscience researchers, but the key is to find accurate studies that come from a website called Pubmed.gov[iv] not just Google, YouTube or random articles you might find on the internet. This is how I added brain-research to my second book, Level Up: A Brain-Based Strategy to Skyrocket Student Success and Achievement[v] and began speaking on the topic of “Stress, Learning and the Brain” in 2016. My first brain-based presentation for YRDSB Quest Conference[vi] in 2016 filled up and had standing room only. Principles, Superintendents, teachers and students filled the room, with the hopes of learning something new. It was the research that was throughout this presentation that helped me to have the confidence to share this knowledge, and not feel intimidated with the fact that I am not a Cognitive Neuroscientist, but someone who is passionate about the subject, that I would gladly trade my weekends to study and learn more, so I can share it with others. There was one slide that gave credibility to the topic, with the advice of Mark Waldman, who had been presenting on the topic many years before me.  It’s funny because he mentioned that studies show if you put an image of the brain in your presentation, it adds instant credibility to what you are saying. I’ll put the slide in the show notes, so you can see how easy it can be to attach a Pubmed Study and picture of a brain, to your next presentation if you want to add neuroscience to your next presentation. You can see my slide where I am talking about what stress does to our brain, as well as our students’ brains. If you are listening to this podcast on iTunes, you can access the images in the show notes here.  How Can You Become a Neuroscience Researcher? Here’s 4 simple steps that I know you could implement. STEP 1: First you want to think of your hypothesis, or something you are interested in, that you will back up with the most current research. Let’s use my presentation slide as an example and say that want to do a presentation on “How Stress Impacts the Brain and Learning.” STEP 2: Go to PubMed.gov[vii] and it’s important what you type into the search bar. Typing in chronic stress and the brain brings up over 16,000 results and is too many for you to read through. If you put (fMRI) in brackets, next to what you are searching, it will bring up studies that use brain scans, and this narrowed our search down a bit more to 628 studies. STEP 3: Read through the studies whose titles interest you.  If you’ve ever looked at an abstract or research study from Pubmed, you might think like I did when I first went there “how can I take this and implement it properly? I’m not even sure what the study is saying.” Don’t worry, the parts of the study that are important are the title, that tells you the topic and hypothesis, or what the researchers want to prove. Then there’s a middle part that give you some details about the study that you can scan, and don’t worry about all of the language. I’m sure many researchers aren’t sure what it all means either. If you’ve ever conducted a study, you’re usually an expert on your subject area, and not an expert at finding the statistical mean for your study, but someone who is an expert will inform this part of the study, that helps them to find an accurate conclusion, that you will want to read.  STEP 4: Pick a study that makes sense for what you are trying to prove.  The study that I used in my slide was “Chronic stress disrupts neural coherence between cortico-limbic structures” and you will see that I sited all of the authors of the study, exactly as they appeared along with the date of publication of the study. It really is that simple. You can become a Neuroscience Researcher and add the most current research to your own presentations using these 4 steps. You can also find interesting brain facts that would go along with this study, to make what you are sharing more interesting, because another brain discovery is that “people don’t pay attention to boring things, or people” and you don’t want to be boring. You’ll want to take the science, and add it to your presentation, without the scientific jargon that loses people’s attention. You can add engaging brain facts throughout your presentation on your topic to bring the attention back, and give a sort of brain break.   BRAIN FACT We know that stress impacts the brain and learning, but did you know that: “Your brain is 73% water. It takes only 2% dehydration to affect your attention, memory and other cognitive skills.”[viii] The authors of this brain fact were so brilliant that they tied it to a study on PubMed.gov on “Cognitive Performance and Hydration.”[ix] You could easily add this brain fact to a slide, encourage your audience to take a drink of water, and remind them that our brain needs water to hold our attention, memory and other important cognitive skills. How easy is that? I hope you find this Brain Fact Friday episode useful. If you do use these tips to implement some new ideas into your work, I would love to know. Please do reach out to me[x] and share how you’ve been inspired to add the most current neuroscience research to your school or workplace. See you next week. Indeed, this textbook offers an array of resources and strategies on how to use a wide range of technologies within a physical education setting, as well as this textbook as a full chapter dedicated to the implementation of assistive technology to meet students with disabilities' needs. Within this interview, we discuss the development and use of this textbook. We talk about specific technologies and strategies one can implement within their classes. In addition, we debate whether online physical education can be implemented effectively, and where the field of physical education currently stands on online physical education and how COVID may change those perceptions.

Welcome to episode 61 of The PE Umbrella Podcast. This week, I dive into more reflections and delve into the world of language and motivation, dancing around both issues as I seek to suggest ways in which the language you use can impact your students. In the episode I cover thoughts around Carol Dweck's Growth Mindset concept and guide you towards The Physical Educator to become a YETI as well as share an inspiring 'Yet' story from the professional world of sport. I also question the use of 'Practice' as part of teaching vocabulary and voice how I think it can be seen as a negative and uninspiring way to look at doing things. I offer up alternatives and set you, the listeners a challenge ready to take up in your own teaching this week. So what are you waiting for? Come on over and join me Under the Umbrella!

This Creating CoPOWERment® Radio episode features Robyn Singh, the author of "Paddling Home: A Journey Back to Self," an auto-biographical and spiritual journey, a personal story of synchronicity, healing and reconnection. In Robyn's words: "Outrigger canoeing was not just a competitive sport for me, It was an ancient and cultural remembrance, a feeling of Oneness, and the chosen vehicle that would transport me back to biological roots, my spiritual home and more importantly an awareness and awakening to my higher self." To connect with Robyn: http://www.rubyksingh.com; Haumea Creations on FB. Born in Brisbane, Australia, Robyn was adopted from birth and grew up on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Blessed and raised by loving parents her family was a global mixed plate, consisting of several different cultural backgrounds, including Indian, German and Maori roots. In her early 20’s, Robyn found her way to Hawai‘i through the sport of Outrigger Canoeing. It was not only a sport for her but the vessel that would eventually bring her back to her biological roots, back to her beloved Hawaii and to an awakening and awareness of the higher Self. Through a journey of intention, synchronicity, healing and remembrance Robyn shares her interesting story as an example of how spirit weaves through our lives and can guide us through our personal story if we stop long enough to take notice and lead us to what we are seeking, essentially the essence of our Self. A bit like putting the jigsaw pieces together. Robyn has been paddling since 1990 and raced in Australia, Tahiti, New Zealand and Hawai‘i. With twelve Moloka‘i to Oahu crossings under her belt, and two back-to-back Moloka‘i Outrigger World Championship wins, during this competitive period, her Outrigger paddling was enhanced by training and racing Olympic Flatwater Kayak in Australia, also competing internationally in New Zealand and Sweden to widen her experience. Eventually transitioning from competitor to coach, as a Physical Educator, she coached a High School Sports Excellence Program and eventually moved to the islands as Head Coach of Hawaii Canoe Kayak Team for 5 years. Accompanying the youth paddlers of Hawaii to National Championships on the mainland, she was also on the coaching staff at the USA Junior Development Camps held annually at the Olympic Training Centers in Chula Vista, CA and Lake Placid, NY. Robyn also coached women’s outrigger at the Surfer's Paradise Club and a season at the Outrigger Canoe Club of Hawai‘i. Robyn is a teacher at the core of her being, is versed in several healing practices and is currently sharing her love of yoga and meditation with others. Recently immersing in the practice of Nia, she has just completed a white belt certification and continues to enhance the joy of life, through movement, dance, paddling and being in nature.
