Sometimes, when I have something important to do, I must confess I feel a little resistance. It's an interesting phenomenon because it's like a general lethargy. Like the energy has drained away and there's nothing left for the job at hand. In those moments, all sorts of other activities suddenly appear infinitely more appealing. YouTube's a quick click away, and the algorithms have numerous suggestions that seem interesting and even, if I'm honest, urgent.And there's research to be done, too. New equipment for the studio or books on Amazon.And hey, I haven't played my guitar in a while!Not that any of these things are wrong, of course. It's just that they are far from more important than the project I need to work on.Procrastination. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only guy plagued with that.In fact, it's historical. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Rationality-related things I don't know as of 2023, published by Adam Zerner on February 11, 2023 on LessWrong. One of the blog posts I'm most fond of is Things I Don't Know as of 2018. It's by Dan Abramov, one of the more prominent people in the world of front-end web development. He goes through a bunch of relatively basic programming-related things that he doesn't understand, like unix commands and low-level languages. I'd like to do something similar, but for rationality-related things. Why? For fun. To normalize the idea that no one's perfect. It'll make it easier to address these knowledge gaps. Or maybe just more likely that I actualy do so. Here's the list:[1] Simulcra. I spend some time going through the posts and it's one of those things that just never manages to click with me. Blockchain. I guess the thing that I don't understand here is the hype. I get that it's a basically a database that can't be editted and I've read through articles talking about the use cases, but it's been around for a while now and doesn't seem to have been that game changing. Yet there are smart people who are super excited about it and I suspect that there are things I am failing to appreciate, regardless of whether their excitement is justified. Morality. To me it seems like rationality can tell you how to achieve your goals but not what (terminal) goals to pick. Arguments that try to tell you what terminal goals to pick have just never made sense to me. Maybe there's something I'm missing though. Quantum physics. I skipped/lightly skimmed the sequence posts on this. Seemed high effort and not particularly important. Well, it is cool to understand how reality works at the most fundamental level. Hm. I would be interested in a going through some sort of lower effort bigger picture material on quantum physics. I spent some time messing around with that sort of stuff like 13 years ago but all that stuck is some vague notion that reality is (fundamentally?) probabilistic and weird. Evolution. I get that at a micro-level, if something makes an organism more likely to reproduce it will in fact, err, spread the genes. And then that happens again and again and again. And since mutations are a thing organisms basically get to try new stuff out and the stuff that works sticks. I guess that's probably the big idea but I don't know much beyond it and remember being confused when I initially skimmed through the The Simple Math of Evolution sequence. Evolutionary psychology. I hear people make arguments like "X was important to our hunter-gatherer ancestors and so we still find ourselves motivated by it/to do it today because evolution is slow". X might be consuming calories when available, for example. There's gotta be more to evolutionary psychology than that sort of reasoning, but I don't know what the "more" is. Bayes math. I actually think I have a pretty good understanding of the big picture ideas. I wouldn't be able crunch numbers or do things that they teach you in a stats course though.[2] Nor do I understand the stuff about log odds and bits of evidence. I'd have to really sit down, think hard about it, and spend some time practicing using it. Solomonoff induction. I never took the time to understand it or related ideas. Occam's razor. Is it saying anything other than P(A) >= P(A & B)?[3] Moloch. I enjoyed Meditations on Moloch and found it to be thought provoking. I'm not sure that I really understand what Moloch actually is/represents though. I struggle a little with the abstractness of it. Double crux. This is another one of those "maybe I actually understand it but it feels like there's something I'm missing" things. I get that a crux is something that would change your mind. And yeah, if you're arguing with someone and you find a crux that would make you agree with them if vic...

Deborah Levy is a writer whose novels Swimming Home and Hot Milk were both shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Last year she published the final instalment of her ‘living autobiography' trilogy of memoirs, and her earlier work includes plays for the RSC as well as short story collections and poetry. Deborah was born in South Africa in 1959, the eldest child of anti-apartheid activists Norman and Philippa Levy. Her father was arrested when she was five and was imprisoned for four years. During this time, Deborah became an almost silent child, but was encouraged by a teacher to write down her thoughts, sparking her love of creative writing. After her father's release, the family relocated to the UK and first lived above a menswear shop in London. As a teenager Deborah worked as a cinema usher, and a chance encounter with the film-maker Derek Jarman inspired her to change her plans to take a degree in literature, and instead she headed to Dartington College of Arts, where she studied writing for the stage and performance. Her first play, Pax, was commissioned in 1984, and was followed by more than a dozen dramas. Deborah then turned to writing novels in the late 1980s and 1990s. Swimming Home was shortlisted for the 2012 Booker Prize, although it initially struggled to find a publisher. Opening Monologue The FUJIFILM X-E4 is a camera that I've fallen in and out of love a dozen times since I've had it. On one hand it's compact, handsome, and powerful. On the other it lacks image stabilization and the desired number of customizable buttons. So where do I land with the X-E4? I'll reveal my verdict and more on today's TDS Photography Podcast. It's so compact, its controls are familiar, and the image quality could for sure be counted on. Plus, I really like the 27mm f/2.8 lens that's bundled with it. But it isn't perfect. So before I get into my personal pros and cons, let's review its basic specs and features. Basic Specs and Features 26.1MP APS-C X-Trans BSI CMOS 4 Sensor (6240 x 4160) X-Processor 4 Image Processor DCI/UHD 4K at 30 fps, Full HD at 240 fps 2.36m-Dot 0.62x OLED EVF 3.0" 1.62m-Dot 180 Degree Tilting Touchscreen 425-Point Hybrid AF System ISO 160-12800, up to 30-fps Shooting Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Connectivity Film Simulation Modes XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR Lens Same battery as the X100V The Things that I Like Handsome, compact body Excellent resolution from the APS-C sensor Cool 27mm lens bundled, good sharpness and color Tilting LCD is very nice Lots of creative controls such as film simulations, manual focusing aids, vintage lens profile ability, and more On the fly geotagging works great with my iPhone Love having the same battery as my X100V Headphone adapter included in the box. USB-C port and charging is nice. Things I Don't Like as Much No in-body image stabilization, and OIS lenses hard to come by No grips on the camera, and grip accessories add to overall cost Jpegs feel over processed with mushy bokeh RAWs are noticeably darker than image on LCD and Jpegs Would much prefer an f/2.0 prime UHS-1 card slot seems like a miss Lack of programmable buttons is disappointing Why a weather-proofed lens on a non weather-proofed body? No battery charger in the box No built-in flash nor accessory flash included No M-C-S switch Play button moved to an awkward location I've really enjoyed shooting with the camera and the 27mm lens. And I've adapted my favorite compact Pentax HD optics as well, and the images look fantastic. I was hoping for an interchangeable lens version of the X100V. But the X-E4 falls short of those expectations. The X100V is weatherproof, has a faster lens, more physical controls, built-in flash, hybrid viewfinder, and more rugged build. The lack of IS in the X100V isn't as big an issue because it only has the 35mm equivalent lens. And I think that the Jpegs and RAWs look better from the X100V as well. So here's what I've decided to do. I have a review model of the Fujifilm X-S10 coming that includes 5-axis IS and a built-in flash, but for only $100 more. I'm going to test it against my X-E4 experience. But for now, I'm holding off on purchasing the X-E4. It's fun, but I think I need more for a $1,000. If you're interested in the camera, The FUJIFILM X-E4 with 27mm lens is available now for $1,049. How I Adapted My Pentax HD Lenses to a Fujifilm Camera Two of my prized compact primes include the Pentax HD Pentax DA 21mm f/3.2 AL Limited and the Pentax HD Pentax DA 70mm f/2.4 Limited. Both are magnificent, and each costs about $450. The trick was finding the right adapter. The Pentax lenses don't have an aperture ring, and their default state is stopped down. A standard Pentax-K adapter wouldn't work. I needed something specifically for DA lenses. Fortunately, I found the wonderful Gobe Lens Adapter that not only allows me to adapt the Pentax optics to the Fujifilm camera, but it provides aperture control as well. And it's a beauty, both in design and function. After testing the adapter, I broadened my lens kit to include the Pentax HD Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited as well. I have now quadrupled my optics kit for the X-E4 for only the price of the Gobe adapter ($26.50). And the resulting images are wonderful. 1.6 million ISO! UPDATE: Ricoh Imaging has given users a guided tour of the Pentax K-3 Mark III, its long-gestating APS-C flagship camera. Despite confirming in February that the body has been delayed, Ricoh is keeping the Pentax K-3 Mark III flame alive with this 20-minute deep dive into the new camera's capabilities - including its top sensitivity of 1.6 million ISO. Ricoh product planner Shigeru Wakashiro gives a top-to-bottom overview of the Mark III, taking in everything from the new image sensor to the improved optical viewfinder. If you ever wanted reassurance that the DSLR isn't dead despite the mirrorless revolution, Wakashiro might make a believer out of you. For our November Narrative Medicine Rounds, we welcome Deborah Levy, the acclaimed author of six novels including Swimming Home and Hot Milk, both nominated for the Booker Prize, and most recently The Man Who Saw Everything, to be published in the USA in October 2019. Levy will be speaking about “Hypochondria and History: Searching for Story.” About her novel Hot Milk, Lisa Appignanesi, author of Mad, Bad And Sad: A History of Women and the Mind Doctors from 1800 to the Present, said: “A hot Attic sun glares down on Levy’s novel, imbuing her mere mortals with a mythic dimension and exposing the monsters within. Maternal hysteria here is more toxic to a daughter who struggles to leave home and become woman than the floating jellyfish that choke the sea. Only Elena Ferrante writes of the seepages of illness and woman’s identity in the family with equal insight. As gripping as it is unputdownable, Hot Milk is a novel by a writer at the peak of her talents.” Levy’s two works of memoir, Things I Don’t Want to Know and The Cost of Living, have been widely translated across the world. Levy has written for The Royal Shakespeare Company; her dramatizations of two of Freud’s case studies, Dora and The Wolfman, were broadcast by the BBC. Levy was a 2018-19 Fellow at the Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination, Paris, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

For Americana singer-songwriter Kevin Daniel, it was his move to New York City and a sudden and unexpected tragedy which finally pushed him to take on music full time. In the winter of 2013, during a dinner party in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Kevin received a phone call from his sister that would change everything. His mother and stepfather, adventure-seekers and amateur pilots, had been flying back from their mountain house in western North Carolina when their plane crashed, killing them both. Daniel’s life was turned upside down, his family torn apart, and the world forever changed. In 2017, he released his second EP, Myself Through You. In the years since, Daniel’s songs, the ones that thread his EPs have led him through a transformational period of self-discovery, the foundation for his debut album, Things I Don’t See. It made for a great backstory and an even better film. I was delighted to interview David on this show back then and couldn’t be happier to welcome him back with a new film. DAVID SPALTRO audio excerpt: "I had a kamikaze mission for my first film, ... Around. I had a six-month plan that if we finished the film, I'd juggle all the credit card debt... If it didn't work out, I'm young, I'm stupid, I'd figure it out. The only way to protect the film was to sign it away to my producers for $1. But what I did was transference fraud so I couldn't file for bankruptcy. The only way to deal with it was to not exist for two years. Award-winning filmmaker David Spaltro returns to Movie Addict Headquarters for a discussion of In the Dark, his new horror film about demonic possession. Spaltro calls In the Dark his lovingly bloody valentine to the inspirational works of Stephen King, John Carpenter and The Exorcist.
