For more than a year, a seven-foot creature with glowing red eyes and folded wings terrorized Point Pleasant, West Virginia—and just weeks after the sightings stopped, the Silver Bridge collapsed and killed 46 people, leaving the town to wonder whether the Mothman had been a monster, a warning, or something far worse.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/RedEyesOfMothmanREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode:https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p8s2fxtFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: Most everyone is familiar with the King James Bible, but did you know that King James also wrote a book on demonology during the witch hunts and trials? Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: November 15, 2021This episode of Weird Darkness, hosted by Darren Marlar, moves from a winged cryptid haunting a West Virginia river town to a Georgia teenager found dead inside a rolled wrestling mat, a Minnesota newlywed who vanished from a restaurant parking lot, and a king of England who wrote a manual on demons. It opens with the Mothman, first reported on November 15, 1966, when two young married couples driving past an abandoned World War II TNT plant near Point Pleasant, West Virginia, spotted a six- or seven-foot gray figure with folded wings and glowing red eyes that rose into the air and pursued their car down Highway 62 at over 100 miles per hour. That same night, contractor Newell Partridge of Salem watched his television fill with a strange pattern before his dog Bandit chased two red eyes toward the hay barn and disappeared forever, and the next day Roger Scarberry described passing a large dog's body near the city limits that was gone minutes later. Over the following year roughly 100 people, including Marcella Bennett, reported the creature alongside UFO sightings and men in black, and on December 15, 1967, the 700-foot Silver Bridge linking Point Pleasant to Ohio collapsed during rush hour and killed 46 people, cementing the belief that the Mothman had been a harbinger of the disaster. From there the episode turns to Kendrick Johnson, the 17-year-old three-sport athlete found dead on January 11, 2013, stuffed head-down inside a rolled wrestling mat in the old gym at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia. Investigators ruled the death an accidental positional asphyxia, theorizing the boy fell in reaching for a shoe, but his 19-inch shoulders could not fit through the mat's 14-inch opening, an hour of footage from all four gym cameras was missing and altered, and his organs were found removed and replaced with newspaper. A second and third autopsy revealed blunt force trauma to his neck and right chest, a fabricated confession recording sold to his family for $1,000 was exposed as a hoax by Sheriff Ashley Paulk, and the case, which once entangled FBI agent Randy Bell's sons Brandon and Brian Bell, was officially reopened on March 10, 2021.Vanishing from a restaurant parking lot is what happened next to Jerrilyn Mullins, a 28-year-old Oakdale, Minnesota, newlywed who left the dinner table at a Chi Chi's in Richfield around 9:00 p.m. on November 15, 1978, and was last seen by her husband's coworker Patrick Melbourne, who said he drove her 22 miles back to a Howard Johnson's and left her there. Her decomposed body surfaced in a Lake Elmo swamp on June 30, 1979, identified through dental records and jewelry, with two autopsies unable to determine a cause of death though her stomach contents placed her killing within an hour of leaving the restaurant. Melbourne, who carried a long record of sexual assault allegations and was later convicted of crimes against a 10-year-old girl, remained the prime suspect; husband Ron Mullins lost a 1989 wrongful-death civil suit for lack of evidence, and the Washington County case stayed unsolved when Melbourne died in 2015.The episode closes with King James VI and I, who returned from a 1589 trip to Denmark obsessed with witchcraft and published Daemonologie in 1597, the only treatise of its kind written by a reigning monarch. In its pages he catalogued the signs of demonic possession, describing superhuman strength exceeding six men, iron-hard skin that could not be pierced, and victims speaking languages they never learned, while arguing that demons inhabit the corpses of the pious and that only prayer and fasting, not Catholic ritual, could repel them. He acknowledged werewolves as men suffering an excess of melancholy rather than cursed creatures, dismissed fairies as illusions sent by the Devil, fixed the ratio of female to male witches at 20 to 1 by reasoning that women were more easily deceived as Eve had been, and produced a work that fueled the European and colonial witch hunts and shaped the weird sisters of William Shakespeare's Macbeth.

SHOW SCHEDULE JOHN BATCHELOR SHOW, 6-4-2026.1671. Evan Ellis discusses the crisis in Bolivia, where President Rodrigo Paz appointed a new defense minister to counter blockades by Evo Morales's supporters and coca growers. These paramilitary-style tactics have isolated La Paz, causing severe shortages. Ellis analyzes the military's hesitation and the influence of illicit interests on the unrest. Evan Ellis examines upcoming elections in Peru and Colombia. In Peru, hard-left candidate Roberto Sanchezchallenges Keiko Fujimori, raising concerns about radical constitutional changes. In Colombia, security-focused newcomer Abelardo de la Espriella leads against leftist Iván Cepeda, reflecting public frustration with the government's failure to manage internal security. Evan Ellis details regional tensions: former Mexican President AMLO accuses Washington of interference regarding corruption probes into his party. In Cuba, the U.S. employs "carrots and sticks" to pressure the regime. Meanwhile, Brazil's election intensifies as the Trump administration backs Flavio Bolsonaro while imposing trade tariffs on Lula's government. Evan Ellis discusses Argentine President Javier Milei's push for unregulated AI development to attract tech investment, highlighted by Peter Thiel's move to Buenos Aires. The segment also covers social unrest in Mexicoas it prepares to host the World Cup, emphasizing the high costs and potential for disruption. Anatol Lieven analyzes Ukrainian drone strikes on St. Petersburg, which damaged energy infrastructure and embarrassed the Kremlin during an economic forum. Lieven observes that the war has evolved into a "battle of drones," undermining Russia's imperial image and increasing internal pressure on Putin as his original strategic goals remain unfulfilled. Anatol Lieven discusses the civil unrest following the murder of Henry Novak in England. He critiques the police response and explains how Nigel Farage is exploiting the tragedy to fuel nationalist sentiment. Additionally, Lieven assesses the political decline of Keir Starmer and the potential rise of Andy Burnham. Mary Anastasia O'Grady explores the ideological battle in the Andean region. She describes Evo Morales's efforts to paralyze Bolivia through road blockades. O'Grady also analyzes the electoral shifts in Peru and Colombia, where voters increasingly favor right-wing candidates who promise security and economic stability over hard-left institutional change. Veronique de Rugy critiques the feasibility of single-payer healthcare in America. Citing Vermont's failed experiment, she highlights the astronomical tax increases required to fund such systems. De Rugy argues that government-run healthcare leads to rationing and stifles the medical innovation currently driven by the American private market. Professor Andrew Bayliss discusses the origins and geography of Sparta, a fertile but mountain-locked valley. He explains the unique dual kingship and the Spartan "plantation cult" society, which relied on the brutal enslavement of the Helots. Bayliss also notes early military overconfidence, exemplified by their defeat at Tegea. Professor Andrew Bayliss introduces the primary sources for Spartan history: Herodotus, who recorded epic narratives; Thucydides, who focused on clinical analysis and the "Thucydides Trap"; and Xenophon, a student of Socrates who continued Thucydides' unfinished history. Each historian provided a distinct perspective on Sparta's rise and fall. Professor Andrew Bayliss describes the "brutal barracks life" of Spartan education, beginning at age seven. Boys endured physical hardship and were encouraged to steal food to prepare for combat. Women also underwent athletic training to produce strong warriors. This rigorous system created a highly disciplined citizen elite. Professor Andrew Bayliss analyzes the Persian Wars, noting that while Thermopylae created the Spartanlegend, the naval victory at Salamis was strategically decisive. Following the war, Sparta retreated into isolationism due to internal scandals, allowing Athens to transform its defensive alliance into a powerful, tribute-collecting maritime empire. Simon Constable reports from France on volatile commodity markets. While copper prices suggest economic growth, the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz threatens to spike oil prices and trigger global economic downgrades. Constable also provides updates on regional weather and the health of his puppy, Lyra. Simon Constable discusses the political instability in Britain, where Andy Burnham seeks to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The segment also covers the tragic death of Henry Novak, which has ignited debates over migration and policing, with Nigel Farage utilizing the crisis to bolster his Reform Party's influence. Rick Fisher warns of the rapid militarization of the Earth-Moon system. He highlights China's dual-use space program, run by the People's Liberation Army, and the U.S. Space Command's shift toward "offensive space control." Both powers are deploying lunar vehicles to establish and protect territory in cis-lunar space. Rick Fisher discusses China's 100-year plan to dominate the solar system, specifically the Lunar South Pole's resources. He describes potential "de-confliction" issues as China uses crashing propulsion modules for landings. Fisher concludes that space is becoming an active war-fighting domain involving orbital, electronic, and cyber warfare.

In this gripping episode, Joe exposes a coordinated assault on Western society, exposed through a series of shocking videos and systemic failures. From blatant election fraud in California to racially charged violence invading public schools, we examine how hand-picked leaders are actively forcing radical agendas onto the public. The cultural rot is going global: we break down the explosive aftermath of Henry Nowak's tragic death in England—where diversity policies shielded a killer—as well as the escalating chaos at a besieged ICE facility in Newark, where local authorities have officially surrendered to agitators on a warm Friday night.Joe sits down for an exclusive, heartbreaking interview with Patti Fox, an Angel Mom and public advocate whose life was permanently shattered by the devastating impacts of illegal immigration. Patti shares her family's grueling fight for justice after an unlicensed, uninsured Venezuelan national permanently disabled her 22-year-old daughter, Carissa, and was swiftly released on a mere $500 bond. We expose a broken legal system that granted the defense seven consecutive continuances to protect the driver's immigration status, leaving a victim's family to ask the ultimate question: Where is Carissa's break? Finally, we confront the utter degradation of traditional American values being engineered at the highest levels of local government. From New York City's absurd push to outlaw the terms "mother" and "father" on official documentation to radical activists targeting sex education in public schools, the war on the nuclear family and religious freedom has reached a fever pitch. Watch as we dissect the dangerous rhetoric labeling traditional Christianity as a "cancer," and discover how you can stand firm against a culture explicitly engineered to fail.

'We are doing this because you are doing it in Ireland'.These were the words of an IRA volunteer in Manchester explaining attacks in Britain during the Irish War of Independence.During the conflict, Britain and particularly England became a major battlefield. Britain was not only geographically close to Ireland, it was also home to large Irish communities in many major cities. Between 1919 and 1922, the IRA made sustained efforts to bring the conflict across the Irish Sea, carrying out hundreds of attacks, most of them in England. This forgotten front of the war included major attacks on the Liverpool docks, the targeting of Black and Tans in Britain and several high-profile incidents, most notably the killing of the British field marshal Sir Henry Wilson. The war also consumed and divided British politics in a way few other issues did until Brexit nearly a century later. Political parties, trade unions and communities were split over what should happen in Ireland, while massive and sometimes violent demonstrations swept across Britain. In this episode of Brothers in Pain, a global history of the Irish Revolution, Dr Brian Hanley explores the IRA's campaign in Britain and how the wider question of Irish independence dominated British politics at the time. This is the eight episode in the Brothers in Pain Series a groundbreaking Global history of the Irish War of Independence by Dr Brian HanleyWritten, Researched & Narrated by Dr Brian Hanley. What happens when an entire city becomes convinced the dead are being stolen from their graves? And what if the rumor turns out to be both wrong... and horrifyingly right? In this episode of The Box of Oddities, Kat and Jethro uncover the bizarre true story of the Wardsend Cemetery Riot of 1862, when thousands of terrified Victorians stormed a cemetery in Sheffield, England, fearing grave robbers were selling corpses to medical schools. The truth behind the scandal revealed a disturbing burial scheme, public outrage, and one of the strangest riots in British history. Then, travel from a Victorian graveyard to the freeways of Los Angeles, where a frustrated artist secretly installed his own highway sign to fix a dangerous traffic problem. For months, nobody noticed—and the unauthorized sign may have helped save lives. Was it vandalism, public service, or a brilliant act of guerrilla urban design? From resurrection men and cemetery conspiracies to stealth infrastructure and accidental civic heroism, this episode explores the strange intersection of fear, ingenuity, and the unexpected ways ordinary people can change history. ACTS 1:1-11 - YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER - BRIAN SUMNER - 2026The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.The Holy Spirit Promised4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”Jesus Ascends to Heaven9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”To support this channel and partner with Brian in Ministryhttps://www.briansumner.net/support/For more on Brianhttp://www.briansumner.nethttps://www.instagram.com/BRIANSUMNER/https://www.facebook.com/BRIANSUMNEROFFICIALTo listen to Brians Podcast, click below.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...Purchase Brians Marriage book at https://www.amazon.com/Never-Fails-Da...Brian is a full time "Urban Missionary" both locally and internationally with a focus on MISSIONS - MARRIAGES - MINISTRY. Since coming to faith in 2004 doors continued opening locally and internationally to do more and more ministry with a focus on Evangelism, Outreach Missions, Marriage, Counsel, Schools, Festivals, Conferences and the like.  Everything about this ministry is made possible because of people personally partnering through the non profit. God Bless and thank you. †Support the showSUPPORT THE SHOW

    - Graham Platner's Maine campaign keeps unraveling as new scrutiny over Kik, his fake working-class image, and his mounting scandals turns him from Democratic hope into a national liability. - The show argues the Democratic farm team is getting even more radical, spotlighting a wave of socialist, Islamist, anti-police, and openly extreme candidates rising in New York, Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. - Spencer Pratt is cast as the rare anti-establishment threat in Los Angeles, with his mayoral run framed as a direct challenge to the corrupt machine that profits from homelessness, decay, and public failure. - The murder of Henry Nowak in England becomes the episode's most chilling example of institutional rot, with police, media, and politicians accused of ignoring an obvious injustice because the victim was white and the attacker fit the preferred narrative. - The broader theme is blunt: from America's 250th celebration to immigration, crime, and race politics, the left keeps revealing that it resents patriotism, protects the wrong people, and punishes anyone who threatens its grip on power. That's right. After years of dreaming about flying with the legendary flight team, filling out paperwork, getting medical forms completed, and generally doing everything he was supposed to do (allegedly), the Navy said, "Nah." The crew spends way too much time trying to figure out who got the spot instead, throwing out names ranging from Cardinals legends to local celebrities and basically anybody who isn't Moon. Then things somehow get even weirder. The gang debates one of the most ridiculous music questions ever created: if you could only listen to one genre for an entire year, would you choose mumble rap, post-9/11 patriotic country, Christian death metal, or AI-generated EDM? The answers reveal way more about everyone's personalities than anyone intended, and somehow Christian death metal becomes the surprise hero of the conversation. In Crap On Celebrities, the celebrity chaos is firing on all cylinders. Diddy drama takes another bizarre turn, Sabrina Carpenter gets a restraining order against an alleged stalker who apparently thought hiding in a Prius was a good plan, Taylor Swift fans once again convince themselves they're decoding secret messages from the universe, and The Black Crowes find themselves at the center of a USA chant controversy. The crew also dives into the latest music news, including Mick Jagger somehow still having more energy than people half his age, a Gene Wilder biopic that already has everyone fan-casting, and the ongoing debate about whether Val Kilmer was a misunderstood genius or simply impossible to work with. Then comes the emotional destruction.A list of the most heartbreaking animal moments in movie history sends everyone spiraling. From Artax sinking into the Swamp of Sadness in The NeverEnding Story, to Mufasa's death in The Lion King, to Homeward Bound, Fox and the Hound, I Am Legend, and more childhood trauma than any morning radio show should legally be allowed to revisit before noon. If you've ever cried because of a fictional animal, prepare to relive every painful second. It's another completely normal day with The Rizzuto Show, which means absolutely nothing is normal. The gang welcomes Ashley Vogt and NHL veteran Jamie Rivers into the studio to celebrate two massive life events: a surprise Nashville engagement and the launch of Synergy Integrated Healthcare. But before anyone can get sentimental, the show immediately derails into a debate about throwing apple cores out of moving vehicles and whether that technically makes you a criminal. Spoiler alert: Missouri law apparently has thoughts.Meanwhile, Moon relives the heartbreak of being passed over for a coveted Blue Angels flight after thinking he was officially cleared for takeoff. The crew spends an alarming amount of time trying to figure out who could possibly be worthy of stealing his seat. Steve Ewing? John Goodman? Wayne Gretzky? Andy Cohen? The investigation continues. As if that wasn't enough, the crew checks in on the internet-famous guy attempting to live in a room for an entire year while livestreaming the experience. He's lost weight, picked up hobbies, and somehow still has fewer viewers than some houseplants on social media. The discussion quickly turns into a philosophical debate about personal sacrifice, family life, and whether staying locked in a room sounds like punishment or a vacation. Then comes Alpha-Gal Syndrome, the tick-borne condition that could potentially rob meat lovers of everything they hold dear. Edward IV marries in secret, then springs the news like a trap.  England's new Queen, Elizabeth Woodville, arrives with two sons, a Lancastrian past, and a family ready to take their chance. When the newly-married couple introduces themselves at Reading Abbey, nobles gape. But Elizabeth takes her newfound royal status with aplomb. She stages a dazzling churching, forcing courtiers to kneel for hours.  Elsewhere, England's pitiable former king Henry VI is found wandering and locked quietly in the Tower. Elizabeth's siblings are married into great royal houses at speed, tightening their grip, much to the dismay of England's noble class.  In London, her brother Anthony fights the Grand Bastard of Burgundy before a roaring crowd. All the while, a wounded Earl of Warwick watches on. The kingmaker's been left humiliated and restless by this union, and the balance of power in between Warwick and Edward won't stay cordial for long. – As always, Dan's royal favourites can chime in anytime on the royal court on Patreon at patreon.com/thisishistory. “Is he a Communist?” During a House Un-American Activities Committee hearing in 1938, Congressman Joe Starnes probed into the politics of a writer produced by the Federal Theatre Project. The playwright in question? Christopher Marlowe. While Starnes's blunder became legendary, Shakespeare and his contemporaries continued to come up throughout the Red Scare years. Something about early modern poetry and plays often rang as disquietingly topical. In her book, A Treacherous Secret Agent: How Literature Spoke Truth to Power During the Red Scare, Marjorie Garber reveals how literature has always posed a threat to authority, a power of which Shakespeare was well aware. As she puts it, “poetry makes trouble all the time.” This episode explores how Shakespeare became a magnet for suspicion during the Red Scare—and how he spoke to the moment from beyond the grave. You think office politics are bad? Imagine your entire career depending on whether the queen liked how you handed her a towel.Lady in waiting sounds like a decorative job. It wasn't. The women of the Tudor privy chamber controlled physical access to the most powerful person in England, and in Tudor political life, controlling the door meant controlling everything. A quiet word at the right moment, a letter passed along or strategically delayed, an introduction made or withheld. These women were intelligence assets, political operators, and the invisible machinery behind some of the biggest decisions of the era. Today we're going inside the system: the org chart nobody wrote down but everyone understood, the dramatic power shift that happened when the privy chamber went from Henry VIII's court to the queens regnant, and what happened to the women who got it spectacularly wrong. Including Lady Katherine Grey, who secretly married a man with no royal permission and triggered a political crisis that landed multiple people in the Tower. And Lettice Knollys, who married Elizabeth I's favorite and was reportedly told there was but one sun in the sky and one queen in England. And then there's Blanche Parry, who had been with Elizabeth since she rocked her cradle, and who figured out the only blueprint that actually worked: be so indispensable that removing you was unthinkable. If you want to go deeper, pick up Nicola Clark's The Waiting Game, which is linked below. This week on the show, we are traveling back to the late 1930s to unlock the archives.  First, we're tackling a blunt operational reality from August of 1937 that hits just as close to home today: a Master speaking plainly about lodge apathy, and why the membership is just as much to blame as the leadership when a lodge loses its spark. Then, we're shifting gears to look at a massive historical transformation from March 1938. We'll trace the rapid progress of education in England, the impact of the printing press, and how a loosely organized group of illiterate operative stone-carvers evolved into a Speculative system designed to build the inner temples of our minds. It's a journey from practical stone-quarrying to moral philosophy—all about money, myth, and the power of discernment. Stay tuned! Click here to download 6 Free Guided Meditations from The Miracle of You: https://www.alyssanobriga.com/miracle-richardrudd   ==== What if the uncertainty we're experiencing isn't a sign that something is wrong, but a sign that humanity is evolving? In this episode of The Healing + Human Potential Podcast, I sit down with Richard Rudd, spiritual teacher, award-winning poet, and founder of the Gene Keys, to explore the profound shifts he believes humanity is entering through 2026 and beyond. Richard shares why he calls 2026 "The Year of the Closing Door," what may be ending in our collective consciousness, and how a new way of being is quietly emerging beneath the surface. Together, we explore the balance between intuition and intellect, individuality and collective connection, and how periods of uncertainty can become catalysts for personal and collective transformation. We also dive into the Gene Keys, the recurring patterns that shape our relationships and life experiences, and how our greatest challenges can become gateways to freedom, creativity, and deeper self-awareness. If you've been sensing that humanity is standing at a crossroads, wondering how to navigate a rapidly changing world, or feeling called toward a deeper understanding of yourself and your purpose, this conversation offers a hopeful and expansive vision for what may be emerging next. ====   Guest Bio: Richard Rudd is an international spiritual teacher, writer and award-winning poet. He is the founder of the Gene Keys Synthesis, a psychological matrix of all human evolutionary potential. Representing a convergence of many lineages and approaches from the scientific to the mystical, Richard's life is an example of how to walk a spiritual path while, at the same time, being a modern business leader. As Founder and Chair of Gene Keys Group, he leads an international team following the principles of Gene Keys wisdom. His work has been translated into many languages, and he has twice been named on the Watkins list of The 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People. Richard is also a Family Director at Berry Bros. & Rudd, Britain's oldest wine and spirits merchant, founded in 1698. A devoted husband and father, Richard lives in Devon, England.   Guest Links: Website: http://www.genekeys.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/genekeys/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Genekeys   ====   Website: alyssanobriga.com Instagram: @alyssanobriga TikTok - @alyssanobriga Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6b5s2xbA2d3pETSvYBZ9YR Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/healing-human-potential/id1705626495   ====   Alyssa Nobriga International, LLC - Disclaimer This podcast is presented solely for educational and entertainment purposes. “We really wanted to make a game that would encourage creators to make more weird stuff.” Low budgets, tight spaces, and a DIY mentality. As it turns out, indie filmmaking and creating escape rooms have a lot in common. James Hamer-Morton & Charlie Bond of Deadlocked Escape Rooms in Reading, UK, know this better than anyone. They joined us on REPOD to talk about creating their quirky, puzzle-driven games. James and Charlie actually met as actors on the set of a film, and they've been partners in life and business ever since. David even wrote a post about one of their projects, Echoes of Darkness: A Star Wars Fan Film . These origins really honed their “do-it-yourself” ethos. As Charlie puts it, “It originally stems from a lack of funds. But also it's enjoyable to do it yourself, and to learn a new skill in the process.” Where Deadlocked really shines though is in their creativity. Their games have quirky mechanics and stories. They've employed clever tricks to make the sets feel larger than they are. Relying on quick wits and creativity have allowed Deadlocked to stay nimble. During the pandemic, they created a wonderful virtual game called The Insiders that gave them global recognition in the escape room world. This led to them giving a talk at the very first RECON about Adapting Your Escape Room Business to New Mediums. James and Charlie have spent the better part of a decade building one of the UK's most distinctive escape room companies. Deadlocked is currently ranked the #1 escape room in the UK, and their newest game, The Reading Witch, recently topped the TERPECA rankings for England. One of my favorite stories from this episode is about the time they were playing an escape room and they stopped mid-game to help the owners fix a broken prop. They are two of the most charismatic, creative, and relentlessly hands-on people in the business, and I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it.       Episode Sponsors We are immensely grateful to our sponsors this season: REA Patreon Backers, PG's Playhouse, Buzzshot, and the Reality Escape Convention. In this episode of Reading With Your Kids, Jed welcomes Chris Navalta, author of Inspiring Stories of Soccer Greats, a powerful middle grade book timed perfectly for the World Cup. Chris, a lifelong sports fan and former sportswriter, shares how soccer's global reach and beautiful simplicity—just a ball and some space—make it the perfect backdrop for stories of perseverance, inequality, and hope. Chris explains that his goal wasn't just to spotlight stars like Lionel Messi, Alex Morgan, Christian Pulisic, and Vini Jr., but to reveal the real human struggles behind their success. Listeners hear about Messi's growth hormone deficiency and how FC Barcelona's support changed his life, Nigerian star Asisat Oshoala's fight against family expectations, and even David Clark, a blind striker who became England's greatest goal scorer and helped shape blind soccer worldwide. Chris and Jed talk about soccer as a unifying force capable of stopping wars, inspiring underdogs like Leicester City's miracle Premier League win, and offering kids everywhere a dream to chase. They also explore how families can use the book to spark conversations about resilience, opportunity, and asking, "Can I play this game too?"—no matter a child's circumstances. In the final segment, Jed chats with David John Preece, creator of the Mister Higgins picture book series. Inspired by his rescue dog, David's books gently invite families into conversations about kindness, inclusion, and grief, especially in Mister Higgins Comforts a Family, where Mister Higgins helps his family cope with the loss of their beloved Thelma.

History is usually told through the lens of famous men, but it's often that lesser-known figures deserve our closer attention. Such is the case with Philip Cary (fl. 1685–1710), a Particular Baptist minister in Dartmouth, England. Cary attended the General Assembly of Baptist churches in London in 1689, and his writings were commended in a letter from that esteemed association. This volume contains the complete works of Cary, published for the first time in 300 years. These three treatises were written to defend the distinctives of the Baptist tradition. In particular, he defended the doctrine of believer's baptism in dialogue with his friends and fellow-townsmen, the Puritan minister John Flavel, and a local physician, Richard Burthogge. Taylor Walls has written a substantial introduction in which we meet Philip Cary, and the reader is well-served by his survey of Cary's theology. Cary's view of the law and covenant theology reveal both his continuity and discontinuity with the broader Reformed tradition. Cary's labor was valued by Baptists in ages past and, after such a lengthy stay in dusty archives, is worthy of rediscovery in our day. When they went looking for him, they found him — apparently alive. The trail led back across the Atlantic to Ayr, a small town in southwestern Ontario, where roughly seventy people had spent years trusting the wrong man with everything they had.
