Holy Smoke: how has John Henry Newman inspired Pope Leo XIV?

St John Henry Newman (1801-90) is perhaps the most influential theologian in the history of English Christianity. Yet, as Damian Thompson discusses with Fr Rod Strange – one of the world's leading authorities on Newman – he was a divisive figure, though perhaps not in the way one might imagine. One of the founders of the Oxford Movement, Newman was widely acknowledged as the most gifted intellectual in the Church of England. In 1845 he converted to Rome and was eventually made a cardinal. Thus he had a unique viewpoint on Church doctrine and dogma. But what is Newman's significance today? Although he is universally celebrated, conservative and liberal Christians, and especially Catholics, are still fighting over his legacy. Newman was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI, canonised by Pope Francis, and Pope Leo XIV has now announced that he will be given the title Doctor of the Church, an honour granted to only 38 out of over 10,000 saints. What is it about Newman that has inspired Pope Leo? And, coming so soon after his election, what does this decision tell us about Leo's pontificate?Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

Hey, you know a cool thing? Today's episode of Dog Days means we are now a third of the way through the story. Thank you so much to you, and all of the people listening, for making us part of your own 'Hot Dog Summer!' Downloads are up 20% month on month, and 37% in just the last seven days!As for the contents of this chapter, well, suitably freaked out by Harriot and Hues, Kit wants to get the Earl of Oxford's ring off his finger. It's the afternoon, and he has time before he needs to get to Syon House. But where is de Vere?First stop is the Theatre, but very soon Kit comes to understand that getting free of the Blind Eye might be a tad more complicated than he first thought...Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcastThree Ravens is a myth and folklore podcast hosted by Eleanor Conlon and Martin Vaux.In each Monday episode we explore a historic county, digging into heritage, folklore and traditions, then we tell a new version of a legend from that county. NB To help you visualise: a tonne of gold would be about the size of a beachball, albeit one you couldn't lift, or a medium-sized suitcase. If it were a cube, it would have sides just under 15 inches/37.5 centimetres."The only thing that really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril."Winston ChurchillNow that France had fallen, it was time for Operation Sea Lion: Germany's invasion of Britain. It would start with air and naval attacks to soften British defences before an amphibious assault. The Battle of Britain was about to begin.Britain had 501 tonnes of gold stored overseas, more than half of which was in Canada—over 10,000 bars. (Head of the Bank of England, Montagu Norman, had been buying Canadian mine production steadily through the 1930s.) But in the vaults of the Bank of England, it had some 1,100 tonnes of gold stored, along with another 800 tonnes stored for other nations. They could not let Adolf Hitler have it.Safety lay on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, but German U-boats were hunting. Over the course of the war, they would sink over 3,000 Allied ships. History was not reassuring either, given the sinking of SS Laurentic in 1917, when some 39 tonnes were lost to the bottom of the ocean just off the coast of Ireland. If you're enjoying this post, please like and share. Thank you:)But beyond keeping the gold from Hitler, Britain needed weapons, food and other war essentials. America's strictly enforced Neutrality Act meant Britain had to pay in gold or US dollars. In 1940, the British people were forced to register any securities — bonds and stock certificates — they owned. The Churchill government, with its newfound wartime powers, then confiscated them and, wishing to ship British wealth to safety in Canada, secretly moved them, along with several hundred tonnes of gold, to the Scottish port of Greenock. (Take note: your wealth is not safe if your country goes to war). From there, in June 1940, they were shipped to Halifax aboard the light cruiser HMS Emerald. HMS Emerald made it. The British treasure was put on trains, with the gold sent to Ottawa, and the securities shipped to Montreal, with the Bank of Canada now acting as a sort of surrogate Bank of England.Buying gold or silver to protect yourself in these ‘interesting' times? I urge you to. The bullion dealer I use and recommend is the Pure Gold Company. Pricing is competitive, quality of service is high. They deliver to the UK, the US, Canada and Europe or you can store your gold with them. More here. But the following month, July 1940, saw the big gamble. 1,500 tonnes of gold were loaded onto five ships. $163 billion worth in today's money. Offshore, they met the battleship HMS Revenge, a cruiser, and three destroyers, which served as their escort across the Atlantic: a flotilla of nine under the command of Admiral Ernest Archer. En route, two ships encountered fog and came to a halt for fear of icebergs. Another had engine trouble and had to drop out of the convoy, to be escorted by HMS Bonaventure. But somehow the mission was a success. Not a single bar went missing. It was the largest treasure shipment in history, either by land or sea.At one point, it was thought three cases were missing, but a mess steward who overheard a conversation between two officers said he had been tripping over something in the kitchen: three boxes had been stored among the whisky. Most of the gold was spent buying weapons and other essentials from the US, and never made it back to the UK.Perhaps they needn't have bothered. Over the next months, to the surprise of many, the Royal Air Force successfully defended British airspace against the German Luftwaffe. Victory in the Battle of Britain would be a turning point in the war. In September 1940, Hitler shelved Operation Sea Lion and his plans to invade Britain. He had other battles to fight.Stories like this fill the pages of The Secret History of Gold (although this one didn't actually make the cut). The Secret History of Gold is available to pre-order at Amazon, Waterstones and all good bookshops. I hear the audiobook, read by me, is excellent. The book comes out on August 28.Hurry! Amazon is currently offering 20% off. Until next time,Dominic This is a public episode. Jack Lodge is a landscape and wildlife photographer based in the south of England. This conversation is well timed as he's gradually moving from purely landscape to wildlife with a little bit of astral in there for good measure, and if I had to guess I wouldn't be surprised if film showed up at some point in the not too distant future. He was lovely company, I hope you enjoy this chat with Jack.More about this show:A camera is just a tool but spend enough time with photographers and you'll see them go misty eyed when they talk about their first camera or a small fast prime that they had in their youth. Prime Lenses is a series of interviews with photographers talking about their photography by way of three lenses that mean a lot to them. These can be interchangeable, attached to a camera, integrated into a gadget, I'm interested in the sometimes complex relationship we have with the tools we choose, why they can mean so much and how they make us feel.

Last week, we looked at some poltergeist definitions and whether such definitions are even helpful. Can something as truly bizarre as a 'knocking spirit' be boiled down to a series of checkboxes on a form? Yet they're also not the invention of the 20th century. Nor are they the preserve of ghost hunters or psychics. Poltergeist accounts stretch back through the centuries, even if the spirit responsible isn't always labelled as a poltergeist. Just look at the Tedworth Drummer from the 1660s and the haunting at Willington Mill in the 1840s. That's just as far as England goes - these accounts appear all over the world. So as we're interested in folklore here, let's unpick two vastly different cases, from 1716 and 1840, to see how they appear in written records that try to avoid using the P-word. Do the accounts even describe poltergeists? Let's explore them in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! Malcolm then asked around and found that other people in the area had also seen a panther around the same time.Malcolm is coincidentally about 3 miles away from Craig, a podcast guest from episodes 72 and 116. Then the following week, at 7pm in the woods, he experienced a full-on hiss directed at him – a google search confirmed his view that it came from a big cat, most likely a puma. Craig and Rick discuss the reports of both black and brown big cats, described over many years in this corner of Herefordshire and seemingly keeping to themselves…Word of the week:   GISS (General Impression of Shape & Size)9 August 2025

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 9, 2025 78:36

This book is a sweeping transatlantic history of Puritanism from its emergence out of the religious tumult of Elizabethan England to its founding role in the story of America. Shedding critical new light on the diverse forms of Puritan belief and practice in England, Scotland, and New England, David D. Hall provides a multifaceted account of a cultural movement that judged the Protestant reforms of Elizabeth's reign to be unfinished. Hall's vivid and wide-ranging narrative describes the movement's deeply ambiguous triumph under Oliver Cromwell, its political demise with the Restoration of the English monarchy in 1660, and its perilous migration across the Atlantic to establish a “perfect reformation” in the New World. A breathtaking work of scholarship by an eminent historian, The Puritans: A Transatlantic History (Princeton University Press, 2019) examines the tribulations and doctrinal dilemmas that led to the fragmentation and eventual decline of Puritanism. It presents a compelling portrait of a religious and political movement that was divided virtually from the start. In England, some wanted to dismantle the Church of England entirely and others were more cautious, while Puritans in Scotland were divided between those willing to work with a troublesome king and others insisting on the independence of the state church. This monumental book traces how Puritanism was a catalyst for profound cultural changes in the early modern Atlantic world, opening the door for other dissenter groups such as the Baptists and the Quakers, and leaving its enduring mark on what counted as true religion in America. Greg Jenner is joined in twelfth-century England by Dr Gabrielle Storey and comedian Cariad Lloyd to learn all about Empress Matilda and the medieval civil war known as the Anarchy. A granddaughter of William the Conqueror, Matilda was born into England's new Norman royal family. As a young girl she was used as a dynastic pawn by her father and sent to Germany to marry the Holy Roman Emperor. Here she was crowned empress and trained to rule. When her younger brother died, followed by her husband, Matilda returned to England to take her place as her father's heir. But after her father's death she was beaten to the throne by her cousin Stephen, and so began the medieval civil war known as the Anarchy. Although Matilda ultimately lost, her son, Henry, was made Stephen's heir, and he went on to rule with support and advice from his royal mother. So who was the real winner? This episode traces Matilda's dramatic life from daughter of a king to empress of Germany to queen-in-waiting of England. Along the way, we ask whether medieval sexism prevented her from taking the throne, and look at the ways a woman could rule in twelfth-century Europe. If you're a fan of fearsome queens, violent family feuds and medieval royal drama, you'll love our episode on Empress Matilda. If you want more medieval queens with Dr Gabrielle Storey, check out our episode on Eleanor of Aquitaine. And, coming so soon after his election, what does this decision tell us about Leo's pontificate?Produced by Patrick Gibbons.Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. Join Dave and Wayne for genre television show news, a glimpse into what the hosts are watching, listener feedback, and analysis of the TNT series The Librarians: The Next Chapter. This week on the SciFi TV Rewatch podcast we discuss the difficulties keeping track of who exactly wears the crown once it's recovered from Harvey Pope. Security breaches of The Library are handled, and Lysa's new invention should pay dividends for the team as the season unfolds. In our What We're Watching segment, Wayne sticks with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and Dave tackles two documentaries featured on Netflix. Dave recommends the Netflix series The Perfect Couple. In Listener Feedback, Fred from the Netherlands still finds it difficult to connect w/the series, and Alan in England asks whether Dave is still bothered by Vikram's wardrobe. Segment 1: • A historic church rents its space for a secular concert—sparking outrage from the Bishop of Fulham. • Todd raises a key question: What happens when churches become concert venues instead of houses of worship? • Calls out “fun-gelical” trends that turn reverence into entertainment—and why this drives deconstruction. Segment 2: • Carl Trueman pens a blistering open letter to the Church of England amid doctrinal collapse. • Divorce is ravaging Christian families—are churches equipped to respond biblically? • Spurgeon's college in England shuts its doors—a symbolic loss in the spiritual battle. Segment 3: • The “Wide World of Christian Stories” includes: Hindu idol installations, Chuck E. Cheese for adults, and “Spawnism.” • Cultural confusion and spiritual idolatry are rising in the West—and it's not subtle anymore. • Todd jokes about plantar fasciitis, but gets serious about where modern worship is headed. Segment 4: • Eugenics is back—disguised in polite modern language. • A British teacher defends child sacrifice; 1 in 3 pregnancies in Great Britain ends in abortion. • Christians remain the world's most persecuted group—yet many churches remain silent. ___ Thanks for listening!
