Football became Andy's escape and passion from a young age. Spotted as a gifted youngster playing for Stockport boys, he caught the eye of Barry Bennell, a charismatic scout linked to Manchester City and later Crewe Alexandra. Bennell, hailed as a youth coaching genius, groomed Andy and his soft-natured parents with promises of stardom.What began as weekend stays at Bennell's home - lured by video games, pool tables, and football training - quickly turned into a real life nightmare. From a tender age of just 10 years old, Andy endured relentless sexual abuse, living in dual worlds: the bright promise of football by day, and terror by night. Bennell's manipulation was masterful; he targeted vulnerable boys from humble backgrounds, wielding fear, threats, and control. The horror deepened when Bennell formed a relationship with Andy's older sister (also named Lynda, after their murdered aunt), married her, and had children with her - all while continuing to prey on Andy.Andy carried this secret for decades, channeling suppressed rage into his game. He turned professional with Crewe in 1992, contributing to promotions and playing nearly 200 league matches across clubs before retiring in 2003. Yet the trauma manifested in panic attacks, toxic relationship patterns, and struggles with mental health. In 1997, when Bennell was convicted in the US, Andy gave police a statement but stayed anonymous to protect his career. Joining the police force post-retirement, he sought to help others, only to face further institutional failures.The turning point came in November 2016. At 43, battling personal demons, Andy waived anonymity in a Guardian interview. He detailed the abuse, Bennell's grooming tactics, and systemic cover-ups. The response was seismic: hundreds of victims emerged, leading to Bennell's multiple convictions (totaling over 50 years) and revelations of a pedophile ring across clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City, and Southampton.Today, Andy remains a powerful and unstoppable advocate. Despite the targeting and harassment he has received since going public with his testimony, he continues to relentlessly engage in public speaking - sharing his experiences on podcasts and platforms to inspire survivors and demand accountability and justice. Hubert Sagnières studies, collects, and publishes works on early explorers and has himself completed numerous explorations: In 2024, he piloted a single-engine plane on a circumnavigation of the globe, honoring the centenary of the first around-the-world flight in 1924 by the Douglas “Chicago” aircraft. He has traveled in the Indonesian archipelago, visiting remote islands and has spent time with the Dayak tribes of Borneo and the Mentawai people of Siberut Island. He has completed over 20 expeditions to the Canadian Arctic, many in very harsh winter conditions and has explored many remote Arctic regions such as the shores of Baffin Island, Ellesmere Island, and Axel Heiberg Island. BAZBALL DECLARED DEAD AFTER AUSTRALIA'S ASHES VICTORY Colleague Jeremy Zakis. Australia'sdecisive 4-1 victory in the Ashes series is viewed as a failure of England's "Bazball" strategy, which Zakis declares "dead" for test cricket. The strategy, reliant on brute force and psychological warfare to score quickly, ultimately backfired by exhausting the English players over the duration of the five-day matches. The Australian team successfully "outfoxed" England by utilizing technical bowling expertise—varying pace and using sliders—rather than engaging in a contest of pure speed. While England boasted of hitting "sixes" (home runs) prior to the series, Australia's disciplined field placement and bowling variety prevented the English batters from getting "their eye in," dismantling the aggressive strategy completely. The period from 1550 to 1700 was critical in the development of slavery across the English Atlantic world. During this time, English discourse about slavery revolved around one central question: How could free persons be made into slaves? John Samuel Harpham shows that English authors found answers to this question in a tradition of ideas that stretched back to the ancient world, where they were most powerfully expressed in Roman law. These ideas, in turn, became the basis for the earliest defenses of American slavery. The Roman tradition had located the main source of slavery in war: enslavement was the common fate of captives who otherwise faced execution. In early modern England, this account was incorporated into studies of the common law and influential natural rights theories by the likes of Hugo Grotius and John Locke. When Europeans started to publish firsthand accounts of Africa in the sixteenth century, these reports were thus received into a culture saturated with Roman ideas. Over time, English observers started to assert that the common customs of enslavement among the nations of Africa fit within the Roman model. Englishmen had initially expressed reluctance to take part in the Atlantic slave trade. But once assured that the slave trade could be traced back to customs they understood to be legitimate, they proved keen to profit from it. An eloquent account of the moral logic that propelled the development of an immoral institution, John Samuel Harpham's The Intellectual Origins of American Slavery (Harvard University Press, 2025) reveals the power of an overlooked tradition of ideas in the history of human bondage. The document would be one of the most sold and circulated written works published in America, before or after independence, and helped tip the scales for Independence from Great Britain, which was realized just 6 months later. Full Text of Readings The Saint of the day is Saint Adrian of Canterbury Saint Adrian of Canterbury's Story Though Saint Adrian of Canterbury turned down a papal request to become Archbishop of Canterbury, England, Pope Saint Vitalian accepted the rejection on the condition that Adrian serve as the Holy Father's assistant and adviser. Adrian accepted, but ended up spending most of his life and doing most of his work in Canterbury. Born in Africa, Adrian was serving as an abbot in Italy when the new Archbishop of Canterbury appointed him abbot of the monastery of Saints Peter and Paul in Canterbury. Thanks to his leadership skills, the facility became one of the most important centers of learning. The school attracted many outstanding scholars from far and wide and produced numerous future bishops and archbishops. Students reportedly learned Greek and Latin and spoke Latin as well as their own native languages. Saint Adrian of Canterbury taught at the school for 40 years. He died there, probably in the year 710, and was buried in the monastery. Several hundred years later, when reconstruction was being done, Adrian's body was discovered in an incorrupt state. As word spread, people flocked to his tomb, which became famous for miracles. Rumor had it that young schoolboys in trouble with their masters made regular visits there. Reflection Saint Adrian spent most of his time in Canterbury not as bishop, but as abbot and teacher. Often the Lord has plans for us that are obvious only on hindsight. John Stewart was elected MP for Lymington, Hampshire on 8th January, 1833.  On paper, he seemed a textbook member of Britain's elite: wealthy, well-connected, educated in England, and a plantation owner.  But Stewart's mother was an enslaved woman, making him considered by many to be Britain's first Black MP. Yet Stewart did not enter Parliament to challenge slavery or injustice. The United States says it has seized two tankers accused of violating sanctions against Venezuela. One of them, a Russian ship, was boarded in the North Atlantic between Iceland and Britain. The US coastguard had been pursuing the ship for weeks since intercepting it off the Venezuelan coast. During the chase, the vessel underwent a change of name and adopted a Russian flag. Russian support including a submarine was on its way before the tanker was seized. The other tanker, sailing under the flag of Cameroon, was seized in the Caribbean.
