A modern history--I think the first one of the podcast! Bijan Omrani's 2025 book God is an Englishman presented a thesis that I couldn't resist, that the history of England can't be unwoven from Christianity, and to ignore the Church is to reject all the things that make England English. We take a look at the basis of Omrani's argument, and a closer look at a few aspects of English life: art, literature, architecture, and education. I think Omrani makes a good case. He's a church warden as well as an historian, and he calls to question the idea that a purely secular England can remain the country that he loves. It's an interesting argument, especially at a time when Christianity in particular is being driven from public life in England. He's at his best when examining history, and weaker as he tries to reconcile himself to the current atmosphere of England, prescribing more compromise in hopes of turning the culture, regaining things like commonly sung hymns or a shared ideal of beauty.But Englishman offers a solid place to consider culture from. Sometimes I think he stretches his points a little far, but overall it's an interesting take on the origins of culture, the things you just take for granted. The first block of the Nations Championship is done, and the All Blacks—much to our delight—finally played like bloody All Blacks.For 40 glorious minutes at Eden Park, they were all over a slightly flailing Irish side. Ireland fought their way back into it after halftime, but putting 41 points on them and winning by 19 is a bloody good result. More importantly, it gives us a little bit of—keyword—optimism heading into the Greatest Rivalry Series.Speaking of which, the Boks—or the B-Boks, C-Boks, or whatever version of the Boks was rolled out this week—put Wales away without too much trouble. South African fans weren't exactly thrilled by the dropped ball and generally ordinary-looking performance, but they still won 43–0, and that scrum somehow looks even more terrifying than ever.So, naturally, we dive into the All Blacks–Springboks rivalry and start looking ahead to the series we've all been waiting for. Tony throws a little chum into the water, so try not to bite too hard. It's all banter at the end of the day. Probably. Rassie is definitely in our heads.Elsewhere, Australia gave Joe Schmidt a fitting send-off by dominating Italy, Fiji scored some absolutely ridiculous tries despite losing to Scotland, and England and Argentina appeared to cram an entire year's worth of yellow cards into one fiery, chaotic match.Coming on the back of the spicy England–Argentina Football World Cup semifinal, the whole thing felt suitably hostile, slightly unhinged and, eventually, pretty entertaining.We cover all of that, talk plenty of rugby and sprinkle in the usual amount of bullshit.There's no episode next week, but after the break, we're going deep into South African content as the Greatest Rivalry Series finally arrives.Grab a beer and enjoy.

Red, White & Blues FC | The World Cup Is Over and We're Not OkaySpain lifted the trophy, Argentina got what they deserved, FIFA gouged everybody blind — and we have to go back to just being Chelsea fans now.The World Cup's over, and Jason opened the show genuinely mourning the fact that he can't just be a fan of football anymore — he has to go back to being a fan of Chelsea. Before we get into it: yes, Morgan Rogers is coming to Chelsea, and no, we're not giving you our real take on that until Thursday's transfer roundup. Consider this the palate cleanser — one last love letter to a tournament that had no business being as good as it was. We both went in with expectations on the floor and walked out calling it an A+.Spain Were Just Better — One Goal the Entire TournamentWe're united as households on this one: shout out Spain. Daniel's big argument is the one he's been screaming at Blueco to copy since day one — you build from the back and you win by not letting the other team score. Spain conceded exactly one goal the whole tournament, ran a 19-year-old out at center back, let Unai Simón coast on one or two saves a game, and still found the goal when it mattered (that Nico Williams header back across for Ferran Torres was gorgeous). The final itself was a boring, ugly watch — Spain couldn't finish, Dibu Martínez put on one of the great World Cup final keeping performances and still lost because Argentina did, in Jason's words, absolutely jack all night. They didn't register a real shot in the first 90. They deserved nothing, and Enzo Fernández taking one for the team with that cartoon second yellow felt like poetry.FIFA, Infantino, and the Great Ticket HeistHere's where we go long and angry. Trump 80-year-old-manned the trophy presentation and nobody — not even Infantino sprinting back across the stage — could get him off it. That was the only prediction we nailed all tournament. From there it's the ticket scandal: FIFA running its own resale site for the first time, a whole Belgium-fan section mysteriously going on sale the day before the US–Belgium match at $1,600 a pop against a $60 face value, tier-two seats quietly getting “expanded” into what were really tier-three views. Canada forced FIFA to relist; the US gave them carte blanche. We put Infantino on a pace to out-corrupt Sepp Blatter and genuinely mean it.Funflation and the Fans Who Paid AnywayThe part that actually depresses us: people paid. Stadiums were full. And every dollar those fans coughed up just teaches FIFA it can charge more in four years — it's not if prices go up, it's how much. Jason walks through the “painted doors” idea (companies A/B testing what you'll tolerate) and “funflation,” the creeping cost of doing literally anything fun, from World Cup tickets to Ticketmaster concerts to $100 parking and $100 subway rides to a stadium built in a swamp you can't walk to. We admit it hit us personally — we'd planned to go for a couple years and priced ourselves out rather than be “World Cup broke” for the next two. Great tournament. FIFA gets zero credit for it.The Third-Place Classic, the Booth Wars, and Closing the Book on Messi & RonaldoThe stuff we loved: England vs. France in the third-place game, a ten-goal exhibition that turned into pure competitive pride once the players got going — Jason calls it better than the final. England going into the Azteca and beating Mexico. Cape Verde drawing Spain and going home heroes. On the booth: all hail Rebecca Lowe, and please, Paramount, give us Zlatan and Thierry Henry full-time and keep Alexi Lalas as far from a microphone as humanly possible. Stu Holden gets both barrels for narrating the obvious as if he has inside knowledge, and for the whole crew being so unready for a boring final they filled time talking about the weather. We close on the legends aging out — Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar waving goodbye while Mbappé's already passed them with two World Cups likely still ahead — plus the eternal USMNT reality check (Pulisic showed up for one game and vanished; stop with the Captain America stuff) and a quick debate over whether third-place stats should count. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was not only the creator of Sherlock Holmes, but apparently he was a creative practical joker, too. The story is told of one horrendous - although clever - practical joke that he played one time. He just wrote a short, unsigned telegram - all in fun - to 12 of the best known men in England. The anonymous message was the same; only six words - six scary words, “All is discovered. Flee at once.” You want to guess what happened? As the story goes, within 24 hours not one of those men could be found. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about “The Fugitive In the Mirror.” Interesting! These men were chased, ultimately not by what someone else knew they had done, but by what they knew they had done. It reminds me of the insightful words of Proverbs 28:1 in the Bible, “The wicked man flees though no one pursues.” You know, twice America has run a popular TV series, and then there was ultimately a blockbuster movie called “The Fugitive.” It's about a man on the run who can't shake his pursuer. In a sense, we're all “the fugitive.” Every one of us knows what it is to be chased emotionally and spiritually by what we've done in the past: the people we've hurt, the messes we've made, the wrong we've done. Maybe nobody else knows, but we know and we can't shake the guilt, the regrets, and that nagging fear of having to face God with it some day. And like the fugitive on the screen, we can get away from it for a while, but it eventually overtakes us again. Is there no way to erase the guilt of the past instead of being chased by the guilt of the past? Thank God, there is. It's described in our word for today from the Word of God in Zechariah 3:1. In a very real way, the man called “Joshua the high priest” is a picture of you and me. Here's what it says: He is “standing before the angel of the Lord (Who, by the way, many believe is actually Christ in the Old Testament.), and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him.” The devil, who will not let you forget what you have done, stands there telling God, “Hey, there's no way You can take this one, not when You know what he's really like.” Maybe you've felt that way too: too dirty for God to ever really love you - to ever let you into His heaven. The Bible describes this man as “dressed in filthy clothes.” But it goes on to say, “the angel said, ‘Take off his filthy clothes.' Then he said to Joshua (and I believe He wants to say this to you today), ‘See I have taken away your sin, and I will put rich garments on you.'” You'll never get anywhere with God as long as you're trying to stand before Him trying to look all religious and righteous. We're filthy, according to Him. That's what our sin makes us. But because Jesus loved you enough to take all the guilt and all the hell of your sins and pay for it on the cross, He can literally take away the guilt and take away all the penalty of all your sin. Can I tell you what today is about? It's about you finally being clean inside, totally forgiven, and totally free from every sin you have ever committed. But you have to respond to what Jesus has done for you by trusting Him to be your personal Savior from your personal sin. You do that when you say to Him, “Jesus, I believe what You did on the cross is my only hope. I've been running my life long enough. I want to be Yours from today on, and I'm grabbing You like a drowning person would grab their rescuer.” There's some wonderful information that will help you nail down once and for all to know you have got this settled at our website. Forty years ago, in 1986, the games in Mexico had their fair share of controversy, as well as amazing moments, surrounding Diego Maradona. Maradona is one of the greatest footballers, or soccer players, of all time. He started playing professionally just before his 16th birthday. He was already a popular player when he arrived at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
