You probably think of a hammock as that flimsy sheet of cloth you string between two trees. The thing that when you get in it you either look lazy and pretentious or you simply flip over and fall to the ground losing what little dignity you have. Well, this is hammock season in show business. It's the time between the big holiday blockbusters and the big summer action movie blockbusters. Judging by the most recent box-office results people are wise to this and very few people are venturing out to the theaters right now. Maybe they're streaming, who really knows? Nonetheless, we've had a look at some of your entertainment options. We start with "The Studio" which follows a legacy Hollywood movie studio striving to survive in a world where it is increasingly difficult for art and business to live together. So it goes and hires someone played by Seth Rogen. We've all seen it and we'll let you know if it's worth your time, Then there's the controversial live action version of "Snow White" starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. Way too much has been written about it but Bill Bregoli actually ventured out to see it. He's the only one of us brave enough. Bill McCuddy tells us about "Thank You Very Much," which is a documentary about performance artist and "song and dance man" Andy Kaufman. Neil Rosen, who likes to follow around people who wear tuxedos, tells us about "The Penguin Lessons" and his conversation with star Steve Coogan. For spy movie fans we have "Black Bag" from director Stephen Soderbergh which stars Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett. For streaming folks there's "Toxic Town" which is based on a true story and stars Jodie Whittaker and Aime Lou Wood. Aimee is also in the current season of "White Lotus" so naturally we drift off into a conversation about that. We also talk about a controversy surrounding Johnny Carson's couch and Bill M tells us about his conversation with Alec Baldwin. So even if none of what Hollywood is offering right now interests you at least you've got us to listen to.

Welcome to Part Two of our MoviesThat Happen to Star Aaron Eckhart miniseries (MTHtSAE II). Can you picture Aaron Eckhart as a gruff-but-loveable biker? Casting director Margery Simkin and director Stephen Soderbergh sure could! Throw a bandana and some muttonchops on that chiseled face and ta-da: movie magic?Fortunately for America, Eckhart's character is not the focus of Erin Brockovich. Instead, we follow Julia Roberts as Brockovich, a working-class single mother who stands up to the stuffy corporate lawyers (yay!) and the obese woman at her workplace (yeah?) and the snippy Black woman at her workplace (uh…) as she bravely fights for a settlement on behalf of victims of corporate pollution (yay again!). Of course, many of the plaintiffs received only a pittance, which is not mentioned in the movie (okay). On the other hand, we get to watch Brockovich being handed a cheque for two million dollars at the end (ffs).Honestly, this was an exhausting watch, an antiquated bit of proto-girlboss biopic-ery void of tension or dramatic movement after the opening twenty minutes. Soderbergh seems to know this, occasionally building out moments that challenge the protagonist, only to drop it in favour of the next sassy retort or deeply unpleasant insult delivered by a righteous Roberts who loves punching down just as much as up. Brockovich is the only real character in a world of ciphers and foils, and the few characters who assert any agency eventually leave. On the plus side, Roberts and Finney deliver great performances. And there's that one guy who looks like the most 2000s Mighty Mighty Bosstones fan of all time. We see you.

All month long, Kyle follows his nose, allowing his impulsivity and gut instinct to drive his movie selection process from week to week. This week, Kyle has us review Stephen Soderbergh's, Traffic (2000)! A critically acclaimed Best Picture nominee that boasts an incredible ensemble cast of players, Traffic (2000) is a compelling and nuanced exploration of the illegal drug trade between the United States and Mexico. Deliberately uncinematic at times, the film often has the feel of a documentary, or a story that one is intended to merely observe rather than become a vested participant in. Also involved in the writing process, as well as serving as the chief camera operator, director Stephen Soderbergh deftly manages the production, delivering an intricate narrative with an incredible number of moving parts, that never once casts the viewer adrift. Earnest in it's characterizations and exploration of its subject matter, the film manages to realistically portray the perpetual quagmire that is attempting to combat/control the illegal drug trade in the United States, while somehow managing to avoid devolving into a dreary, nihilistic slog. A truly exceptional film from a very talented director with a knack for breaking taboos, both stylistic and thematic in nature, Traffic (2000) is a must see. Today's guest has earned himself a reputation as an innovator who knows how to make a RED camera look good. This could have been because of the fact that he was responsible for the picture post of one of the world's first movies shot on RED ONE - Che by Stephen Soderbergh. Since then he has graded many award-winning movies, amongst whom we can find the series called Russian Doll that won EMI for cinematography. Recently I noticed incredibly interesting looks of a movie called No Sudden Move by Stephen Soderbergh and then I have found out that it was shot on RED and that the same person in question graded it. I could not resist but get in touch and schedule a recording of this podcast just before Xmas to get to know Nat better and be up close and personal. With it's abandoned Baker Chocolate Factory repurposed as a venue for keg parties and it's Guiness Book renowned trolley that traverses through Cedar Grove Cemetery used for rooftop joy rides, Lower Mills was a place Cliff could develop his imagination with all the other hooligan Tom Sawyers'. At twenty two, after a year of waiting tables at Cafe Florentine in The North End and saving money, Cliff moved to New York with a heart full of dreams and a U-Haul full of crap. No sooner did he unpack, did he read in the Village Voice that somebody made a movie set in South Boston. Halfway through Good Will Hunting at the Angelika Film Center, Cliff said to himself, “It's possible.” Years went by, restaurant work continued and acting training remained a priority when Cliff got a call to be featured background, playing Charlotte's doorman in Sex in the City. “That's me! That's me! Did you see me? I delivered the dog!” Cliff's friends and family were proud though his grandmother was never told the actual name of the show. This role put wind in his sails to try things out West where he lived in Hollywood for fours years. Aside from eating crappy pizza nothing really happened for Cliff so back to New York he went, but he didn't quit. Two years after his return, at thirty four years old, Cliff finally started speaking on television. His debut being made on the second season of HBO's Boardwalk Empire. The subsequent ten years brought more film and television work and more training. He's been directed by Martin Scorsese, Stephen Soderbergh, Jodie Foster, Peter Berg and Steve Zaillian among others. He's swapped dialogue with estemed actors like Jon Voight, John Turturro, Laura Linney, JK Simmons, Liev Schreiber and Giancarlo Esposito. His training includes conservatory programs at The Atlantic Theater Company Acting School and The William Esper Studio. Cliff has also been the student of Kathleen Turner, Bob Krakower and most extensively Chazz Palminteri, of A Bronx Tale fame. Cliff's signature role to date has been his portrayal of real life hero, Sergeant John MacLellan in the Mark Wahlberg starring/ Peter Berg directed Patriot's Day. “Welcome to Watertown motherf#%*ker!”, he can be seen shouting over a fence while firing his service automatic in the portrayal of the famous shootout with The Boston Marathon Bombers. Cliff and John MacLellan are still friends today. Cliff's most recent role and only other portrayal of a Bostonian is in the yet to be released, Ray Donovan full length feature film. When not auditioning Cliff is walking his dog, Hagler, named after the great middleweight champ, writing his memoir about his Lower Mills adolescence, training in Muay Thai and working on his recovery with over nine years sober. Cliff lives in The Lower East Side. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

It's the exciting 11th edition of the Book and Film Globe Week In Review podcast, recorded live on Clubhouse! Editor-in-chief Neal Pollack chats with G.L. Ford about big woke trouble at the Tolkien society. Mr. Ford doesn't think that contemporary political concerns should enter into Tolkien's world of “Fairy Stories.” Meanwhile, Sara Stewart stops in to offer a counter-perspective on the movie ‘Zola,' throwing the brakes on people's praise of it, finding the “funny” celebration of sex work a little unseemly. Then it's Stephen Garrett time. This week, he talks with Neal about Steven Soderbergh's latest heist thriller. How does Stephen Soderbergh do it? Neal wonders. We all wish our retirements were so productive. Neal compares himself and Stephen to “Jeffrey Lyons and Michael Medved run through the Multiplicity machine about five times.” He proceeds to complain about the hacky Vietnamese hit movie ‘Bo Gia.' Stephen makes the point that maybe this is like a Tyler Perry movie, so culturally specific that you're not supposed to get it. Good point, says Neal. Finally, Paula Shaffer makes a visit, to praise ‘Special,' a Netflix show about an awkward gay man with cerebral palsy. She also has kind words for ‘The Bold Type,' a Freeform show about young women making it in the magazine business. “I'm eternally 14 years old,” Paula observes. Aren't we all? Finally, Neal Pollack announces that he'll be off next week, taking a “mental health break” by laying in a banana-leaf covered pit in his backyard. We wish him luck. Mental health is very important in these trying times. Sharyn Vane will be hosting this fine show in his stead.

You may believe that movies you shot with smartphones cannot reach producers in the professional film industry. Our guest in Episode 78 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking, Bradley Gallo is going to inspire you to think again.Bradley is co-founder of Amasia Entertainment which won a bidding war for the franchise rights to The Green Hornet movie early this year. Universal Pictures just announced a partnership with Amasia Entertainment on the same day we recorded this podcast, April 16. Amasia Entertainment’s other founder is Michael Helfant, who was president and COO of Marvel Studios.Bradley Gallo is a big believer of how mobile filmmaking with smartphone cameras can benefit filmmakers. Bradley speaks to the growth of the mobile film industry as a passage to making good films through great stories. He mentions Tangerine by Sean Baker and Stephen Soderbergh’s films and how their mobile films impacted the film industry. What are some of things you would want to do if you are trying to get the attention of a producer in the industry, such as Bradley Gallo? He shares what you should avoid doing and how best to approach him with your project. Understand they do receive a lot of requests, so following his tips are a good idea if you want to get their attention. But don’t think that a movie concept shot with smartphones is not going to get the attention of producers in the industry.Bradley discusses how short, and low budget films can often lead to meetings and help you build strong connections in the professional film industry. Mobile films can be a great proof of concept for directors, writers, and others. But it’s important to network. Some people can make a lot of connections in a short period of time, while others can take years. The important thing, according to Bradley, is to play to your strengths and keep at it.Episode 78 of the SBP Podcast was a fun conversation filled with many insider tips. Bradley has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry from Halle Berry to Christopher Walken, and many more. He has worked his way up to where he is today. A very impressive story of how someone can rise from the dream to the reality of making films with big name studios and continue to also make good short, low budget films.Article announcing Amasia Entertainment’s partnership with Universal Pictures for ‘The Green Hornet And Kato’ Feature: https://deadline.com/2020/04/universal-amasia-entertainment-team-up-for-the-green-hornet-and-kato-feature-1202910256 SBP Podcast: The Voice of Mobile Film™ is for everyone who ever wanted to or is curious about making movies and videos using smartphones.Follow Bradley Gallo to get more information about his projects.Bradley Gallo on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0303010 Twitter: https://twitter.com/bradleygallo Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bradleygallo/ Amasia Entertainment Website: https://amasiaentertainment.com/ Amasia Entertainment on Twitter: https://twitter.com/amasiaent Amasia Entertainment on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amasiaent/ Our Links:Subscribe, support and listen to bonus episodes and more on Patreon: http://patreon.com/sbppodcast SBP Podcast Website: http://sbppodcast.studio iTunes/Apple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sbp-podcast/id1296673665 International Mobile Film Festival Website: http://internationalmobilefilmfestival.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/sbppodcast Twitter: http://twitter.com/sbppodcast MFTV - Mobile Film Network Distribution Channel: http://MobileChannel.TV Susy Botello on Twitter: http://twitter.com/susybotello SBP Podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4ISEF0SZOLyRpw20loXzlo#upsell Podchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/sbp-podcast-mobile-filmmaking-928180 Smartphone Filmmaking Publication on Medium: https://medium.com/smartphonefilmmaking © Copyright 2020 S. Some of the most exciting movies being made today are tackling class tensions and the role of work in our lives. Bong Joon-ho's Parasite, our cover story last issue, is one major example, with its twisty upstairs-downstairs thriller set-up. But many other films have been taking up the subjects of work and class in a variety of different ways: Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You, Stephen Soderbergh's High Flying Bird, Mike Leigh's Peterloo, Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, and Greta Gerwig's upcoming movie Little Women (the cover of our latest issue). For our latest Film Comment talk at Film at Lincoln Center, we were delighted to discuss work and class with veteran independent filmmaker John Sayles, whose film about striking miners, Matewan, is now available in the Criterion Collection. Also joining Sayles and FC Editor-in-Chief Nicolas Rapold was Teo Bugbee, a contributor to Film Comment and The New York Times who also works as an organizer for Writers Guild of America East. Starting off with how Matewan was conceived, we covered a lot of ground, spanning decades at the movies and in American history.

Stephen Soderbergh's "High Flying Bird" imagines black pro athletes bypassing mostly white team owners to finally reap the profits of their own athleticism. Is it just a dream, or could Colin Kaepernick's fight with the NFL be the start of something like the nascent revolt in the film? The film imagines what would happen if the mostly black athletes in the NBA discovered a way to profit from their own hard work without white team owners taking a massive cut of the profits. Super agent Andre Holland plays Ray Burke, who uses social media to circumvent the league and TV networks, and gives his rookie client Erick (Melvin Gregg) a potential map toward a future in which athletes, not owners, control their destinies. Our talk soon turns to Colin Kaepernick's fight with another league, the NFL, and whether it... made any sense. Don H writes in “Did you now VUDU has been doing this for quite some time now?  I'm not sure how long, but I found old marketing e-mails from them going back to March 2017 offering free TV shows with ads. They have over a 1000 movies and TV shows to choose from and they change up the selection monthly.”   Peter asked for TV show recommendations, here are some of the responses: Banshee is my first suggestion. I would argue it's the greatest action television show ever made. The fight scenes throughout this show get progressively more insane and unbelievable in all the best ways. The only thing I'll say is you just need to get over the initial premise, and if you can do that you will have so much fun with this show, and the final season (not only was chosen to end by the creator instead of being cancelled) brings everything home in truly the best way it all can.   Rectify is another option if you're open to a bit of a slow burn that will literally make you cry every episode, and not for the reasons that Parenthood or This is Us do. The dialogue and the uniqueness of the main character makes this show very much worth the time to invest.   Man Seeking Woman. Hilarious and unique sketch type show that also is able to tied together a coherent story from season to season and again I feel the way they choose to end the show is just perfect   Those are my top 3, at least of current shows. Hope you check em out and can't wait to hear you talk about how awesome Lucas Hood and Kai Proctor are!” Jacob Chandler Mississippi: “Hey Peter, I heard you were looking for a new show to watch and you have a list of criteria for what kind of show you want it to be. I'm not sure if this show meets all the criteria but it's definitely worth checking out if you haven't already. I would highly recommend looking at Amazon Prime's Patriot. It's a dark comedy about a U.S. spy coming to Luxembourg to interfere with the Iranian election. And as generic and uninteresting as that sounds, it is actually one of the better shows in the “sad hitman” genre. It's really quirky with a very complex plot and a whole lot of ridiculousness somehow wrapped up in a decent emotional struggle. Check out at least the first three episodes and if you don't like it by then you probably won't be able to get into it. But I highly recommend it.  Love the show” Matt Y: “Long time listener, first time writer as they say. Love the show! Last week you guys discussed super hero one-offs and a couple of other examples of one of style shows like Black Mirror. I wanted to recommend that you check out an episode or two of Room 104 on HBO. The first season from the Duplas brothers was zainey and unexpected.  Each half hour episode takes place in the same nondescript motel room. The era, visitors, and metaphysical rules are always different. The first season episodes split pretty evenly into a third of the episodes as junk, another third as a “good sit”, and a third of truly inspired story telling. I'd recommend you check out episodes 2 (Pizza Boy), 5 (The Internet), and 7 (The Missionaries). Season two is three episodes in and they have all been great! Last night Michael Shannon played a Russian diplomat who sets up a date with a woman he met on the Internet, played by Judy Greer. You don't get these strange stories anywhere else! Anyways, have a great weekend.” Fred from Chattanooga,TN says “Of course you may have seen all of these but I thought I'd throw a few out there that I really like and these could keep you busy for a little while  Six Feet Under The Shield The Knick - the show was directed by Stephen Soderbergh and is fantastic. So underrated Banshee - another fantastic show that not a lot of people talk about  Mad Men, The Leftovers, Deadwood.” Roger writes in: “you might want to check out one of the greatest sci fi shows of all time!!! babylon 5!!! it's free on amazon prime.  the first season is a tad a slow build, but it's just incredible. You might also want to check out misfits , it's on hulu right now” Sean from Missouri writes in “Hey Peter, I thought I might suggest the X-Files or Gilmore Girls for shows with a decent amount of seasons that you could watch if you haven't seen those yet. I guess there's also the various Star Trek series which have a lot of seasons if you put them all together. Hope that helps!” Errol L writes in “Hey Peter! Errol from LA. Looking for some binge worthy completed shows? Well strap in!   Peter Freeman from Gainesville, VA writes in “You mentioned you were looking for a suggestion for a serialized TV show. Have you tried Person of Interest. This show ran 5 seasons and stars Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson. Jonathan Nolan was the show runner   The first season initially was procedural with an over arching storyline but by season two it became a full blown serialized show. I believe it's available on Netflix.“ Amber-T writes in “In terms of shows with lots of seasons that are available and fun to watch... (and you're right, I don't know what you've seen)  The Good Wife, The West Wing, Doctor Who, 30 Rock, Parks & Recreation, Mad Men, Supernatural, Friday Night Lights.  I also recently watched an indie horror film called Sick For Toys that's super dark and weird, about a brother who kidnaps a guy for his sister for her present every Christmas. Deals with a lot of #metoo stuff without being too on the nose. Flew really under the radar, but worth checking out.”   Key Chung writes in: “just heard the latest /film daily pod. You should mos def check out The Expanse! It starts off very good and gets better as it goes along. Last season was best season of sci-fi currently on TV imho.” Mike T writes in “Hey—if you're looking for a show to binge, I would suggest Peep Show.  It's a British comedy, 9 seasons (each better than the last), and it's serialized.  Very dark, and one of the few comedies that warrants repeat viewings. It's on Hulu and Amazon Prime.” MovieGeekBlog tweeted “Peter, if you are looking for serialised stories #theAmericans or #TheGoodWife are some of the best. Also, have you seen #MurderOne?” David Chen tweeted: “just heard the most recent Slash Daily. If you have Hulu, I think you should check these out. It truly was groundbreaking and probably still holds up.” Classic ER Episodes Michael O. from Nashville TN writes in to ask: “This is more a question about physical media and less about film. But how many more years do you give to retail stores like GameStop? When will that suffer the same fate as Blockbuster?” Hashim (pronounced like wash-em) writes in “Hello gang,  Enjoying your podcast which I recently discovered. You asked for film related questions on a recent podcast.  I'm wondering what the best movie going experiences you can recommend when it comes to visually enjoying a film.   Super large screens really don't matter much to me, I feel like I can always sit closer if I want everything projected large. It's mainly about contrast, color, clarity and deep blacks and overall brightness.  Are the premium offerings from standard digital projection really worth it when it comes to the visuals? If so, which theater chains stand out?  We currently do not have a true Imax screen in the entire state of Michigan. It's all about MJR, Cinemark and AMC in the Detroit area.  Essentially, can you rank based on visuals and not necessarily on sound, food, seats, etc?”   All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today's show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. Such has been done in independent film before including award winning director Sean Baker’s film TANGERINE (2015). For UNSANE, the movie turns from a quirky arthouse film to a straight out horror film by its end. White collar professional, Sawyer Valentini, lives with the fair of being found by her stalker. Originally from Boston, she moves to a small city in Pennsylvania hoping to move on with her life. Yet, depression and fear follow her everywhere. Looking for support, she is tricked into voluntarily committing herself to a corrupt mental health institution. Unfortunately for her, David Strine, her stalker, may have found her whereabouts. Has he worked his way into employment to become part of the facility’s staff? Or maybe is it all in her mind? With its curious camera angles, the movie leaves viewers wondering whether our lead protagonist is actually insane, imagining things, or just a troubled woman who has been created because of unfortunate circumstances? With many timely issues present, including the care for the mentally ill, insurance fraud, and the MeToo issue, some may wonder if Soderbergh is trying to say something more with the film even with its simple gimmick and midnight movie aspects. Dark Discussions takes a look at the film and gives their thoughts. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Every time Jack exclaims we'll have a short episode, we end up going over three hours. So needless to say, Episode 64 goes long. But there's a lot to be covered: We workshop some new morning show personalities for you all, discuss  Joss Whedon's feminist short-comings and throw some names into the "Game of Thrones" death pool. [Have you checked out CastBox, yet? It's a cool platform and it's free to join -- for both listeners and podcasters alike. Go there, won't you?] NEWS: The “Stranger Things” creators have confirmed a third season is a done deal and they would like to wrap the series after a fourth season -- which hasn’t been ordered yet. Paul Scheer has been tapped to write the pilot for a “Galaxy Quest” TV show. The original cast from the movie have been approached to star but no new details have emerged. The “Xena” reboot is officially dead at NBC Lorne Michaels confirms that season 24 of “SNL” will run live coast-to-coast. Stephen Soderbergh is working on a new series for HBO titled, “Mosaic,” starring Sharon Stone and Garrett Hedlund. Soderbergh calls it a “branching narrative piece” where viewers will be encouraged to download an app to their mobile device which will prompt choices a viewer can make while watching the show. Mosaic will have a “fixed universe” and the choices you make won’t actually impact what happens in the story. Instead, the app will allow viewers to rearrange the story into a different order, or at least view things in any order they choose. Starz has picked up a new series from Jerry Bruckheimer and RZA tentatively titled, “Black Samurai.” It’s based on Marc Olden’s 1974 book of the same name and will star Common as “an American Army Ranger named Robert Sand who meets a Japanese martial arts master and trains to become a samurai. After his sensei and brothers are murdered, he embarks on a “worldwide journey of both revenge and self-discovery.” In a statement, the producers say the show will be “a mash-up of the spy and martial-arts genres and infused with the heart, soul, and music of Common and the Wu-Tang Clan.” Netflix has renewed “Friends from College” for a second season. Vincenzo Natali, the director of ‘90s horror movie “Cube” -- as well as episodes of “Westworld,” “Hannibal” and “Orphan Black” -- will direct the pilot episode for Kevin Bacon’s “Tremors” series. MTV is bringing back “MTV: Unplugged” on September 8. As AVClub states, the show will cater to a “new generation of people who probably have no idea who Eric Clapton is.” The premiere will feature an acoustic set from singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes. We don’t know who else will be featured but a press release from MTV teases an "eclectic, superstar lineup of global pop culture artists." After the success of MTV’s rebooted “Fear Factor” series (starring Ludacris), the network has renewed the series for 20 more episodes. ABC has tapped Gary Janetti (a guy who wrote for both “Will and Grace” and “Family Guy”) to write and produce a “The Jetsons” live-action multi-cam sitcom. Seriously.
