We are joined with actor, director, producer & teacher & writer Marishka S. Phillips to have an awesome conversation on the craft of acting!Marishka S. Phillips was born into the entertainment business.  Her mother, Sandra Reaves-Phillips is an award-winning actress, in addition to being a writer and a singer.  Marishka grew up immersed in theater, film and television, so it was not surprising that she would follow in her mother's footsteps. Ms. Phillips had been honing her skills as a dancer, taking classes at Alvin Ailey School of Dance and Broadway Dance Center, and had begun performing at a very early age.   She got her first major theatrical break at age 13 when she was cast for the European tour of RAISIN. This opportunity offered her a chance to explore the world and served as an important confidence builder. Her career path has been anything but traditional, though it started off that way.  She landed on Broadway, cast as part of the ensemble, on the musical UPTOWN: IT'S HOT starring Maurice Hines, in which she also understudied for the female lead.  She continued amassing credits on Brodway with roles in BUBBLIN' BROWN SUGAR, FAME: THE MUSICAL, THE WIZ and THE ME NOBODY KNOWS.  On television, she had re-occurring roles in the last two seasons of THE COSBY SHOW spin-off – A DIFFERENT WORLD.  When she was not traveling the world with a musical or as a backup singer with recording artists like Sean “P Diddy” Combs and Cece Winans, she was developing and fortifying other aspects of her talents.  She never considered herself a one trick pony.  Like her mother before her, she began writing and eventually set her eye on directing, but not before fate would bring her together with the multi-faceted Susan Batson, who among her many other talents, was a world-renown acting coach who worked with some of Hollywood's A-list celebrities.  Though she did not abandon any of her other career goals, Ms. Batson did open up new possibilities which she embraced with the same passion that she has every chapter of her life's journey.  Today, in addition to being known as a working actor, Marishka is also a writer and director whose credits continue to grow.  Her short film, Melinda: The Movie starring Tony Award-winning performers, LaChanze and Lillias White won numerous awards on the short film circuit.  Ms. Phillips directed the one woman play, DOWN TO EARTHA, written and starringDierdra McDowell, which was a tribute to the invincible entertainer/civil rights and social justice activist, Eartha Kitt.Coaching other actors has become a central part of Ms. Phillips career development.  She has been an instrumental force in helping actors such as Kerry Washington (Scandal), Nicole Beharie (Miss Juneteenth) and Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill) achieve some of their best performances, and has received credit for doing that, as a result, she has become a much in demand acting coach. Experience the journey to an Oscar with celebrity acting coach Carnetta Jones. Her unique approach is borne out of 20 years in the entertainment industry. Carnetta was bitten by the acting bug at the age of 12 after sneaking into her father's rehearsal of the musical, Bye Bye Birdie. Recognizing her excitement, he arranged for the director to give her a part. This started a journey that took her from the stage to the big screen. Along the way she worked with great directors like Oliver Stone and Tyler Perry, and with great actors like Meagan Good, Taryn Manning, Kim Whitley, Guy Torry, Bill Bellamy, Faune Chambers, Tasha Smith, Malika & Khadijah, Kirk Franklin, and Macy Gray (pictured below). She also transitions comedians, singers, and musicians into professional actors. Carnetta succeeds with her own “natural” technique: a powerful blend of Susan Batson, Meisner and Stanislavski. She tailors an individual plan that strengthens weaknesses and builds ones strengths. In addition to private and set coaching, she conducts seminars, workshops and webinars. Carnetta's success didn't happen over night! She received her baccalaureate from the Claremont Colleges and her Master's from UCLA. In college she honed her craft through performance and education which led her to writing, directing and acting in plays and film. This led to teaching acting to everyone who asked for her expertise- college students, children, adults and seniors. These experiences prepared her to coach celebrities on studio lots and many unique locations! Carnetta's evolution of impartation continues to expand as she prepares to use her unique approach to introduce Hollywood-style acting to Japan. Carnetta resides with her husband and three daughters in Southern California. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theactorslounge/support

"Jannotta crafts an original, new jazz work that keeps things moving forward and interesting."- Chris Spector"Her writing offers an interesting perspective."- Sarah Ellen HughesThank you for dropping by my website. I hope you will take a look around and check out the music and the projects that have become the fabric of my life.To introduce myself . . .My life as a performer came very early as often happens with little girls. I started dancing at the age of 4. And I never stopped. I found the violin at the age of 9, and at 14, I fell in love with acting. My first “gig” at 15 was as a chorus dancer in a production of “South Pacific” at the Burbank Starlite Bowl in Los Angeles, where I'm from. I studied dancing throughout my life, studied acting from the age of 15, and began singing when I was in college because I needed a second instrument for my music major. I studied ballet with Swiss Ballet Master Dora Krannig and modern jazz with choreographer Joe Bennet. I've had a million teachers but these two were special. Dora taught me to breathe and Joe loved Jazz. I've studied with a lot of acting teachers as well but my favorites were radio star Lurene Tuttle, Gordon Hunt, and the amazingly introspective Susan Batson. But my singing teachers were few because I only really committed to one couple: Lee and Sally Sweetland, themselves studio singers. Thanks to them I have a technique that will never die. During my time of study and day jobs, I also attended Banff Center School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada, on a partial scholarship for musical theater. I won't mention how many odd jobs I had in order to get by, however being a door-to-door sandwich peddler and a cocktail waitress in a jazz dive were particular stand-outs. My paid acting gigs were few and my non-paid theater gigs were many. However, I was lucky enough to have a year's contract with the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival where we did Children's Theater during the school year and Shakespeare in the Park during the summer. One of the best performances I ever had as an actress was with the Festival. Because we were partially funded by the City of Los Angeles, we had to take our Children's Improv Show to Terminal Island Maximum Security Prison because the Mayor's Office asked us to. We think the Mayor's Office thought we were taking Shakespeare to the inmates but our Shakespeare play wasn't ready yet. We were stuck with the improv show. Of course we had to change it up a little bit from children to felons. It was scary, it was risky, it was the greatest night I've ever had in the theater, and we got a standing ovation. After 22 years of the acting struggle, a funny thing happened. I sat in with a piano player at a Los Angeles restaurant and suddenly I had my first $50 jazz gig. No muss, no fuss. Just music. So I switched from acting to singing, took another day job, sang only jazz, and studied Charlie Parker solos. I also started writing. My 1st album, “Just Jazz” was released in 1996 when I began traveling to Europe to sing. It was in Switzerland that I landed distribution for this CD with TCB Music, The Montreux Jazz Label. My 2nd album, “Jazz at the Ranch,” also distributed by TCB, was a live concert performance at a National Park in the Santa Monica Mountains, a concert I gave once a year for 10 years. That album was released in 2001. I also produced the Back to Blues & Jazz Concert during this time as a benefit for environmental causes. My 3rd album, “Is It Magic?” put me on the arts grants super highway. The City of Ventura, where I now live, awarded me a Cultural Arts Fellowship in 2008, which partially funded this project. It also gave me the chance to write most of the music. In 2010, I received my 2nd arts grant from the Ventura County Arts Council: an Artist in the Community Partnership Grant. I partnered with a local homeless shelter and created a live performance piece entitled “Voices of the Homeless,” starring members of the homeless community and backed up musically by jazz improvisers listening to their stories. I then made a documentary about that performance, which was awarded the Earth Charter and the Arts Award in 2012 for activism through the arts. This leads me to my current project, “My Little Heart, Ruthie,” which had been sitting on the shelf since 1994. It is a story rhyme with music and illustrations, a little healing story for adults and kids. It will become a picture book in both hard cover and E-Book format. It also has an accompanying CD, which contains my narration (thank you Children's Theater) and jazz inspired musical suite (thank you Jazz and music theory), and will be available as both a physical CD and a digital download. The PurposeGirl Podcast: Empowering women to live their purpose with courage, joy, and fierce self-love.

That inner voice is calling to you – will you answer? Inside each of us is the call of the Goddess, or as I like to say, a purpose; something we were all meant to do and meant to be. This call is powerful beyond measure, and if you listen to it and really pay attention to what is being told to you, it will not only guide your life, but provide the opportunity, too. This has manifested for me in creating PurposeGirls – my calling is to inspire, and to light women up. Today's incredible, passionate, brilliant guest has listened to her calling – as she says – from the moment she could think. Nicole Ansari is an award-winning actor, director, writer and producer who has been living her purpose since before she even knew it was an active decision to do so. When you live in alignment, the opportunities come – and Nicole is the living example of that happening. In this episode, Nicole and I talk about: Nicole's incredible journey of discovering her calling, answering the damn phone, and living it every day. How to learn to understand the signals you are getting – both internal and external - so you can find and live in your own calling and purpose. Positive evidence of someone who has found success – even in a potentially challenging industry! – living in her purpose, so you know you can also live in yours. Juicy details about Nicole's newest project:   About Nicole Ansari: Nicole Ansari's professional life began in her teens as an actor in Tatort, an iconic German Cop TV series. Ansari studied with the late legendary Uta Hagen, of HB Studios, with Susan Batson at the Actors Studio in NYC and at the Stage School of Dance and Drama in Hamburg. After two feature films for German TV, her first professional engagement was with the Repertory company Neumarkt Theater in Zurich. Following this, she joined the famed Théâtre du Soleil under the direction of Ariane Mnouchkine, in Paris and on a European tour. Her next steps led to being a guest star at the Public Theatre in Vienna in leading roles, multiple arthouse movies and TV shows, including HBO's Deadwood. She continued on to London's West End and Broadway, performing with her husband Brian Cox, and eventually creating a home base in New York. Ansari co-produced two feature Films; “Blumenthal”, a comedy in the New York Theatre world, starring her husband Brian Cox and the thriller “As Good As Dead” with Andy McDowell. Adding to her CV as Co-producer + director, is the short documentary “Padim at PS3” about the Arts program in a NYC public school and the web series “Messy”. Messy has garnered numerous awards on the festival circuit including Best Director and Best Dramedy at the British Web Awards; Best Web Series at the NY International Film Awards, and best Web Series at the Chicago Independent Film Awards. As a director, Nicole also worked with the Rubin Museum of Art and NY Women in Film. Ansari's lifelong interest in the healing arts brought her to study and train with some of the great teachers of our time. She is a certified Yoga Therapist, Kundalini Yoga, Pre and Postnatal Yoga Instructor, a Life Coach, Theta healing practitioner and a feminine movement teacher. She also has an online Hemp business. Storytelling, for her, is a healing art and she has been merging her interests in helping others to live a passionate life fueled by their wild, authentic self. From plays and stand-up routines in front of his elementary school classmates; talent shows and statewide art competitions in middle school; to TV productions, and professional modeling gigs in high school and college, Stephen has always been a man of artistic expression. Upon graduating with honors in mass media/broadcasting from Hampton University, he began his professional career as a copier salesman in his native New York City. After a few years of door to door sales for Xerox Corp. by day and intense acting classes with famed coach Susan Batson by night, he received the fearful news that his mother had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Witnessing her fatal bout with the debilitating disease at the young age of 61 was the catalyst that thrust Stephen back into the artistic world. Having raised five children, the youngest of whom with Downs Syndrome, his mother never got the opportunity to fully express herself creatively. Armed with the memory of his mother, the blessing of his father, and the support of his tribe, Stephen soon left behind the perks of a steady paycheck, healthcare, and printing free headshots and scripts, to pursue acting full-time. After years of student/indie films, plays, film festival circuits, and continued study he developed a hard-earned reputation for solid work in drama, comedy, voice-over, and commercials #ByIndieMeansNecessary.
