London is a city of layers. Roman roads. Saxon graves. Plague pits and forgotten tunnels. But beneath the cobblestones and catacombs… something howls. In this six-part limited series from The Devil Within, we journey through centuries of urban legends, cryptid sightings, and historical anomalies to ask: What really stalks the streets and shadows of England's capital? From werewolves in Camberwell to the vampire panic of Highgate, each episode digs into chilling eyewitness accounts, forgotten folklore, and suppressed rituals. These aren't just stories—they're patterns. Something is beneath London. Something old. Something watching.

Welcome to the LIVING FOR THE BOYLE review series!  Daniel Francis Boyle originally hailed from Manchester, England and his filmmaking career took off thirty years ago in 1995 with the release of acclaimed cult thriller Shallow Grave.  And ever since then, Danny Boyle (as he's officially known) has carved out a uniquely successful career not only achieving box office success several times but also winning a few Oscars along the way.  During this time period, he has also become one of MY personal favorite directors, having helmed excellent ORIGINAL stories spanning several genres including children's fantasy, science fiction, crime drama, horror, and biopic.  Over the next few months, I will be reviewing some of my favorite entries from his filmography in the lead-up to the long-awaited sequel to one of his more successful films….28 Years Later which will be released in the U.S. on June 20!It's finally here!  Following several months of hype including one of THE more iconic trailers of recent years, Danny Boyle has returned to this ongoing post-apocalyptic saga.  Also returning is screenwriter Alex Garland (Annihilation, Ex Machina) and together they have crafted a new story within this post-apocalyptic universe taking place entirely on the British Isles several years (28 actually) after the initial outbreak of the "Rage virus" which overtook the UK.  This story focuses on young Spike (Alfie Williams) who lives on a remote island off the coast of the infected mainland in a quaint village with his mother (Jodie Comer) and father (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).  There are several harrowing run-in's with the infected but at its core, this is a coming-of-age story.  So does it live up to the hype?  Let's find out....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

A film editor's job is much like the work of a sculptor. You take a massive block of material—raw footage—and with a series of delicate, precise cuts, you shape it into something cohesive, something meaningful. In today's episode, we welcome Michael Trent, a master of cinematic storytelling who has spent his career assembling some of Hollywood's most unforgettable films. From the war-torn beaches of Saving Private Ryan to the eerie corridors of The Hatred, his work is the unseen hand that guides an audience's emotions, turning chaos into art.For Michael Trent, the journey into the editing room began long before he ever set foot in Hollywood. His father, a sound editor in England, introduced him to the craft at an early age. “I was using a Moviola by the time I was ten,” he recalls, describing the tactile magic of celluloid film. But talent alone wasn't enough to break into the industry—his leap from England to Hollywood in 1994 was an act of faith, a cold call to the right person at the right time, proving that the universe often conspires in favor of those who dare.Editing is not merely about cutting and pasting scenes together. It is about rhythm, about knowing when to hold a shot and when to move on. It is the balance between subtlety and impact, between quiet tension and explosive release. “I think a lot of editors cut too much,” Michael Trent shares. “You have to feel the emotion of a scene and let it breathe.” His work on The Hatred is a testament to this philosophy, particularly in its ability to sustain suspense, making audiences feel the presence of something sinister lurking just beyond the frame. One of the most fascinating aspects of his career was working alongside Steven Spielberg. Editing Saving Private Ryan meant moving between locations, from an Irish field to an aerospace museum in England, adapting to whatever environment was necessary. But beyond the logistics, Spielberg's ability to visualize an edit in his head was what amazed Michael Trent the most. “He called in from Japan with an edit suggestion, and when we made the change, it worked perfectly. It was as if he had a video camera inside his mind.”Horror editing, in particular, demands a unique approach. Timing becomes everything—not just in the obvious jump scares, but in the slow-building unease that keeps an audience gripping their seats.A shadow lingering a second too long, a door creaking open just slightly out of sync—these are the choices that make a horror film work. “There's a scene in The Hatred where Alice walks toward the cellar,” Michael Trent explains. “We held the shot longer than usual, just to build that sense of dread.”To be an editor is to be both an artist and a storyteller, sculpting not with clay or paint, but with time itself. The true test of an editor's skill lies not in what they add, but in what they take away. Sometimes, entire scenes—ones that took days to shoot—must be discarded for the sake of pacing and narrative flow. “You have to be ruthless,” Michael Trent says. “If it doesn't serve the story, it has to go.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

    A Word With You

You know, when I was growing up, it was a pretty long trip to get to the ocean. I grew up in Illinois, so we didn't have a lot of ocean experience. Needless to say, when I lived along the East Coast for over 20 years, I became fascinated with the ocean. I still love to watch it, I love to walk along the beach, I love to romp in the waves a little, but I haven't gotten used to those big breakers rolling in. Hey, listen, I'm a lake boy, okay; a pool kid. But those big old waves, they make me feel as if they could pick me up and carry me all the way to England, which I would rather fly to anyway than go by way of the Atlantic Ocean. But I have good friends who really know what to do with those giant waves. They've taught me that what you do is you surf on it if you know how, and they're good at it. They wait for that big old curl to come roaring down on them, they leap on their surfboard and they ride that wave. Now, I see a mega wave as a threat. My friends? They see it as a vehicle. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Surfing the Wave That Could Sink You." Now, our word for today from the Word of God comes from Acts 8, and it talks about the day that a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem. All except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. It really sounds like a large wave coming in against God's people. But listen to what they did with it. "Those who had been scattered," chapter 8, verse 4 says, "preached the Word wherever they went." Now, here is this violent enemy attack on the infant church, and it forces the believers out of their little nest in Jerusalem. Probably losing their home, and their family connections, and possibly their job. What did they do? Did they sink? No, they surfed on that big wave! They started spreading the Gospel in all the places they were forced to go. Now, that's just what God had predicted in Acts 1:8, when He said, "You'll be My witnesses in Jerusalem, then Judea and Samaria, and in the uttermost parts of the earth." But they weren't leaving Jerusalem until this persecution hit. See, the attacks of the enemy often end up facilitating the plans of God (don't you love it?), because of how believers handle the heavy waves of crisis that come crashing toward them. You could do that. It's called capturing your crisis for Christ. This type of believer surfs on a wave of trouble instead of sinking under it. Let's fast-forward 2,000 years from the book of Acts to your life right now. You've got pressure. What's the wave that's coming in at you right now? You've got stress, you've got some anxiety. Can you see it? There's a crisis that's threatening you, or maybe a disappointment, or a disease, a disaster. Capture your crisis for Christ. Do what these early Christians did. They used it as a platform to proclaim Jesus. They said, "Well, if the crisis has forced me into a place I never wanted to be, I'm going to use this as a place to proclaim Christ." Basically, they believed that their situation was their assignment wherever God put them. See, the crises of life put us in positions where a lot of folks are watching what we do; where we meet new people, where we can find a platform for saying, "Jesus is enough, even in this; especially in this situation." Now, the enemy would love to use this wave that you see coming at you to sink you, but don't go down under it. Remember, your situation is your assignment from God. Do what the great surfers do! Ride on top of this wave; surf on it. Capture it for Christ.

Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas is with me to talk all about the International Santa Claus Collection!International Resources, LLC was established 1991 in Northbrook, IL. The company designs, contract manufactures, markets, and sells collectibles primarily during the Christmas season, under the trademarked names of “Liberty Falls” and “International Santas.” The figurines are hand painted resin and reflect gift bringers from traditions all over the world. In 1822, from the talented mind of Prof. Clement Clark Moore, came one of the most popular poems ever created, “A Visit from Saint Nicholas”. And thus the legend of St. Nicholas, spanning more than 1,700 years through every country in Europe, continued to flourish in the United States. Starting with Nicholas, the Turkish patron saint of children, who gave away bags of gold coins stuffed into stockings and shoes, through Russia, Holland and into England, Nicholas has evolved from many different appearances and an equally large number of names.Gwiazdor and Ded Moroz? Too many women are being told NO to getting hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for their menopause symptoms in midlife.  But the truth is… the benefits of HRT can WAY outweigh the risks for helping you feel like yourself again. The problem?  The massive knowledge gap in hormonal medicine.   That's why this week, I'm joined by the incredible Dr. Louise Newson, a trailblazing general practitioner and menopause specialist who's transforming the conversation around hormone health.  We're diving into the real risks of not prescribing HRT, why hormones can be a game changer for your symptoms, and the surprising link between menopause, migraines, and inflammation.  Dr. Newson is bringing the science and clarity to the HRT convo, and she's here to help you reclaim your voice—and your hormonal health.  Listen here to set the record straight and start advocating for what you truly deserve! Dr. Louise Newson Dr. Louise Newson is a physician, women's hormone specialist, and member of the UK Government's Menopause Taskforce. She's an award-winning doctor, educator, and author, dedicated to raising awareness of women's health in perimenopause and menopause. Dr Louise studied Medicine and Pathology at The University of Manchester in England and worked in hospital medicine before switching to specialize in General Practice and medical writing. IN THIS EPISODE The revolution of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy  Synthetic vs. bioidentical hormones  Advocating for yourself and addressing the conversation of hormone replacement therapy options with your doctor  Individualizing hormone replacement therapies  Hormones for addressing conditions like migraine  How hormones affect women's long-term health  HRT for mitigating inflammation in the entire body  Lifestyle suggestions and habits to promote hormonal balance  QUOTES “Let's just remind ourselves that hormones are an evidence-based treatment and the guidelines are telling us that it has more benefits than risks for the majority of women. Yet… It's only a minority of women in our countries and other countries that are receiving it.”  “It's harrowing what people are being told by their clinicians. And they often just want advice. They don't always want treatment, or they want to know the treatment options available to them in the future. But they're not getting any answers, and I think this is a great disservice to women.”  “I see a lot in the clinic, women who have seen all sorts of specialists, have all sorts of treatments, but no one's spoken about their hormones.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Dr. Louise Newson's Website Dr. Newson's Instagram Dr. Newson's Podcast Get Dr. Newson's FREE Balance App: Your go-to for Menopause Health  Pre-order my new book: The Perimenopause Revolution HERE!  RELATED EPISODES  #647: Hormone Optimization Therapy (HOT) Isn't Your Mom's HRT + It's One Of The Best Strategies For Longevity with Dr. Amy Killen #648: This Changes Everything: The Perimenopause Revolution Every Woman Needs Now #620: What You Need to Know About Premature Menopause, Perimenopause, HRT and Your Options with Dr. Salome Masghati #605: Breaking the HRT Confusion: The Truth Behind Hormone Replacement Therapy for Perimenopausal Women with Karen Martel
