For 56 years, his family had no idea what happened to him until human remains were discovered in a nearby farmer's field in 2023 and DNA confirmed they were Alfred. Investigators determined he had been murdered, suffering stab wounds, blunt-force trauma, and a broken hand believed to have occurred while fighting his attackers. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the disappearance and discovery of Alfred Swinscoe. In 2024, police identified two deceased suspects, including a family friend with a history of violence who may have followed Alfred from the pub. A coroner ruled Alfred was unlawfully killed, but authorities have never established exactly who killed him or why. Once a luxurious German ocean liner, the Cap Arcona was commandeered by the Nazis and, at war's end, turned into a floating concentration camp. Thousands of prisoners were killed in the aerial attack. Whitaker interviews historians and speaks with Holocaust survivors who witnessed the bombing to bring this largely overlooked chapter of history to light. This is a double-length segment. Richard Elliott, a deputy manager in residential childcare in England, talks about his mother's childhood inside a Catholic convent and, later, a Catholic laundry in the north of England during the mid-twentieth century. Richard describes his mother's four years of separation from her family and her sisters as a child, her return home, an attack by a boyfriend at fifteen that led to her being sent away a second time, and two years of unpaid labor inside a Catholic laundry with no contact with her family. Richard also discusses discovering the full extent of his mother's story only recently, while interviewing her for a book they wrote together, and how his own work in residential childcare has changed the way he understands her. The conversation closes on Richard's petition calling on the UK government to open a public inquiry into the treatment of children in Catholic institutions in England. Night one is out now.The bit that stopped me while I was writing it...The kirkegrim isn't a legend in the way the others are. It's a practice. When a new churchyard was consecrated, the belief was that the first body buried there had to stand guard over the ground forever — so rather than doom a person to that, they buried an animal alive instead. Usually a lamb.That happened. Across Denmark, across Sweden, across England, for centuries. There are churches standing today where the bones are still down there.I wrote that section three times because I kept making it too gothic. It works better plain — a man in a wool coat, on a cold morning, holding a lamb that isn't frightened because lambs aren't frightened of people. That's the version that's in the episode.A note on the format...These aren't candles. The hundred-candle game is specifically Japanese, and burning four of the hundred on Nordic material would break that whole arc. So Mørketid gets its own frame, and it's the exact inverse: in Japan you blow candles out until the dark arrives. Up north the dark is already there — you light one and count nights until the sun comes back.Four nights, then we go back to Japan.Next Weekend...Finland. And Finland is the worst of the four. There's a word up there for what happens when the forest doesn't take you anywhere, doesn't hurt you, and simply stops letting you be found — while you stand in it, awake, listening to the search party call your name.The candle stays lit.

Full Text of Readings Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 124 The Saint of the day is Saint Jeanne Jugan Saint Jeanne Jugan's Story Born in northern France during the French Revolution—a time when congregations of women and men religious were being suppressed by the national government, Jeanne would eventually be highly praised in the French academy for her community's compassionate care of elderly poor people. When Jeanne Jugan was three and a half years old, her father, a fisherman, was lost at sea. Her widowed mother was hard pressed to raise her eight children alone; four died young. At the age of 15 or 16, Jeanne became a kitchen maid for a family that not only cared for its own members, but also served poor, elderly people nearby. Ten years later, Jeanne became a nurse at the hospital in Le Rosais. Soon thereafter, she joined a third order group founded by Saint John Eudes. After six years she became a servant and friend of a woman she met through the third order. They prayed, visited the poor, and taught catechism to children. After her friend's death, Jeanne and two other women continued a similar life in the city of Saint-Sevran. In 1839, they brought in their first permanent guest. They began an association, received more members, and more guests. Mère Marie of the Cross, as Jeanne Jugan was now known, founded six more houses for the elderly by the end of 1849, all staffed by members of her association—the Little Sisters of the Poor. By 1853, the association numbered 500 and had houses as far away as England. Abbé Le Pailleur, a chaplain, had prevented Jeanne Jugan's reelection as superior in 1843; nine years later, he had her assigned to duties within the congregation, but would not allow her to be recognized as its founder. In 1890, the Holy See removed him from office. By the time Pope Leo XIII gave her final approval to the community's constitutions in 1879, there were 2,400 Little Sisters of the Poor. Jeanne died later that same year, on August 30. Her cause was introduced in Rome in 1970. She was beatified in 1982, and canonized in 2009. Reflection Jeanne Jugan saw Christ in what Saint Teresa of Calcutta would describe as his “distressing disguises.” With great confidence in God's providence and the intercession of Saint Joseph, she begged willingly for the many homes that she opened, relying on the good example of the Sisters and the generosity of benefactors who knew the good that the Sisters were doing. They now work in 30 countries. “With the eye of faith, we must see Jesus in our old people—for they are God's mouthpiece,” Jeanne once said. Dave Hodrien of the Birmingham UFO Group interviewed her in early 2022 about twenty years of reptilian sightings, poltergeist activity, and shadow figures that followed her from that bedroom into the hospital wards where she later worked as a senior nurse.From there comes the boy born in the Bengali village of Mundul Gaut in May 1783 with a second head sitting inverted on top of the first, an upper head that wept and tried to nurse while its expressions ran independent of the child's. A cobra killed him at four, a salt agent for the East India Company robbed his grave, and his skull still sits in the Hunterian Museum in London as a specimen of craniopagus parasiticus, a parasitic twinning that occurs in two or three births out of five million.The Vatican's paranormal caseload runs through the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and the Consulta Medica, a board of Italian Catholic physicians who rule on whether a healing has any natural explanation, with Michael O'Neill of MiracleHunter.com estimating that 99.9 percent of investigated miracles are medical. Father Lampert puts genuine demonic possession at one case in five thousand, and the Vatican's revised 1999 guidelines require priests to consult mental health professionals before any exorcism is approved.Archer Avenue follows, the old Native American trail southwest of Chicago where Resurrection Mary has hitchhiked between the O'Henry Ballroom and Resurrection Cemetery since the 1930s, and where police answering a call on August 10th, 1976 found the cemetery bars bent apart and scorched with handprints. The same stretch carries phantom monks at St. James of the Sag, a cloven hoofprint outside Kaiser Hall, a driverless hearse, the Maple Lake ghost light, and Red Gate Woods, where the world's first nuclear reactor lies buried from the Manhattan Project.Olavinlinna Castle, built on a lake island in southeastern Finland in 1475, holds the legend of the lord's daughter who opened the gate for her Russian lover and was condemned for treason and immured alive in the courtyard wall, with a rowan tree of white flowers and red berries said to have grown where she died.Sharon Kinne told police in March 1960 that her toddler had shot her husband, collected $230,000, and was acquitted of killing her lover's pregnant wife before fleeing to Mexico City, where she shot a man in a motel room and earned the nickname La Pistolera; she walked out of Iztapalapa prison during a blackout on December 7th, 1969 and has never been found.The episode closes on hauntings that reached a courtroom, from the 1917 Ouija-board novel Jap Herron credited to Mark Twain's ghost to Stambovsky v. Ackley, the 1991 Ghostbusters ruling that made a Nyack house legally haunted, and Gerald Brittle's $900 million suit daring Warner Bros. to prove the events behind The Conjuring actually happened.
