AI agent startup /dev/agents announced a massive $56M seed round, putting the company's valuation at a whopping $500 million. The amount is impressive given the company won't have a first version of its product available until at least early next year. The reason behind investors' trust, however, becomes a bit clearer when you consider the founders' pedigree: /dev/agents' co-founders were both on Google's Android team during the early days of the smartphone era. The round, as well as whether or not to include “slash” when pronouncing the company's name, was the first of many deals discussed on today's episode of TechCrunch's Equity podcast. Listen to the full episode to hear hosts Margaux MacColl, Devin Coldewey and Anthony Ha dig into: How Yurts plans to become the DoD's go-to AI integration platform and compete with AI chatbot the Pentagon is developing itself. The latest wave of VC turnover, including Brian Singerman's choice to step back from Founders Fund and Sriram Krishnan's departure from a16z, and where they're going next. As women-founded companies receive only 2% of venture funding year after year, it's more important than ever for women founders and women venture capitalists to band together to reshape what it means to be an investor and an entrepreneur. Winsome Kirton and Tatijana Janko are two women advocating for and leading this change. They're here today to discuss diversity in investment, their experiences with bias in the investment space, and more. NDRC, Ireland's national startup accelerator, and an initiative of the Department of, Environment Climate and Communications (DECC), is celebrating three years of building a thriving startup ecosystem across the country. They have announced a 2-year contract extension to continue supporting entrepreneurs and their ambition to make Ireland the best place in Europe to build a startup company. NDRC operates through a network of innovative startup hubs, including Dogpatch Labs in Dublin, PorterShed in Galway, RDI Hub in Kerry, and Republic of Work in Cork. These hubs serve as connectors, bringing together various stakeholders across the startup ecosystem to support and nurture founders. The founder-first, entrepreneur-led focus woven throughout programmes has led to over €56M being raised by startups who participated in the programmes over the last 3 years alone, and €180M by the entire NDRC portfolio during the same period, resulting in 650 jobs created, and thousands of individuals supported via educational aspects. Accelerator startups raised over €35M where examples include IP monitoring software GreyScout (€3.5M), cyber startup Cytidel (€1.35M), and Examfly (€1.5M). In three years, €21M was raised by Pre-Accelerator alumni. Notable examples of this early-stage success include Galway-based ByoWave - a video game controller for gamers with disabilities (€2.4M), and Tipperary-based trio Zerve ($3.8M). Dee Lyons, a Limerick native and Founder of ExamFly remarked, "We found the support incredible. The focus and accountability have meant that within 6 months, we went from an early-stage startup with some initial validation to an investor-ready business with a strategy and long-term vision." Lyons was selected for the 2022 NDRC Accelerator and secured €1.5M investment one year later. NDRC has enjoyed huge support from over 100 founders & operators as mentors who have built or exited companies worth a combined net value of €5Bn including Mark Cummins (sold Pointy to Google for over $100m), Bobby Healy (Former CTO of CarTrawler, valued at over €500M), Áine Kerr (Led Storyful through €18m acquisition), Pat Phelan (Co-Founder SISU, sold Trustev for $40 million), and Jules Coleman (sold Hassle.com for €35m). Entrepreneurs countrywide enjoyed support and often exclusive mentoring from a range of multinational companies including Open.AI, Google, Stripe, Fidelity, ESB, Microsoft, and Unilever. For example, Open.AI provided €25k credits to a unique NDRC Hackathon in partnership with the ISE course at the University of Limerick. Ian Browne, NDRC MD for the past 2 years commented on NDRC's impact on startups, "In a period of momentous change in both the macro and micro environment, we've continued to instil this 'founder-first' mentality, adapting to startups' real-time needs, and delivering programmes, which are entrepreneur-led and reflect growing startup trends - whether that's new topics like Deeptech and Generative AI, or the introducing one of Europe's first SAFE instruments on 'founder-friendly' investment terms to Irish startups." Mary Rodgers, CEO at PorterShed, a regional hub partner said, "NDRC has extended PorterShed's role regionally, offering high-quality early-stage supports to more tech startups in the West and North West. In the PorterShed first 5 years of operation, we've helped create 835 high-value sustainable jobs (KPMG validated). We look forward to building on this success through programmes like NDRC, and the welcome news of the 2-year extension." During the period a new NDRC Women Entrepreneurs Network was created which now has 400+ members, and to date, 30% of NDRC accelerator investments comprise women-led or co-led startups. Since 2021, NDRC has managed multiple successful NDRC portfolio company exits, notable examples including 2021 alumnus Robotify which secured a partnership with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak followed by an acquisition by global edtech Imagine Learning, fintech Chasing Returns was acquired b...

It's a quick one this week since Kevin is all alone and there is no one to tell him his ideas are foolish. The episode kicks off with the first ever full on sales pitch, with Kevin having fallen in love with his Backbone for iPhone (you can buy one here, even if you use Android: https://www.playbackbone.com ) Of course he bought it so he could spend more time gaming so that leads into his quick review of Starfield, now out on PC and XBox (and his iPhone using his Backbone. Just sayin'...). He's pretty hooked on the game and would definitely love for you to check it out, too! To close out the gaming bit of his unsupervised episode, he also covers the trailer for the new Fallout series coming to Prime in 2024. Next up, Kevin sticks with games, but of the reality variety rather than the video variety. He and his kids have been watching The Squid Game Challenge on Netflix, a real life (non-lethal) version of the popular Netflix show. Guests compete for a whopping $4.56M grand prize in a show that has been quite entertaining for both Kevin and his kids. After that, Kevin discusses the show Jury Duty on the free Amazon Prime service, Freevee. It's a show about a fake reality show, except one guy doesn't know it's fake. Ronald Gladded has volunteered to participate in a documentary about jury duty, not knowing that the judge, trial, and every single person involved is an actor. James Marsden, of X-Men and Sonic the Hedgehog fame, plays a narcissistic caricature of himself in a very interesting show. The show finishes with a brief review of Bodies, a multi-decade spanning murder mystery on Netflix, and then a bit of a rundown on some streaming content releasing later this month. NBA free agency is barely 48 hours in the books, and the Lakers have managed to tie up more or less all of the loose ends facing them when the period began. The 1a priority was retaining Austin Reaves and 1b was retaining D'Angelo Russell, and by lunchtime on the west coast, both were in the bag. Russell is reportedly returning on a two-year deal worth $37M, with a player option for the second season. A fair deal that offers flexibility on both sides, and should allow Russell to settle into a comfort zone where he can bounce back from a Western Conference Finals that left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. As for Reaves, it was never a question of whether he'd be back, but at what price, as the Lakers and Team Reaves waited to see if another franchise called the Lakers' messaging of a willingness to match any offer for the restricted free agent. As it turned out, things just got wrapped up posthaste. Four years, $56M, with a player option for the last season. Assuming Reaves continues to improve - or even just maintains status quo - that's a straight up bargain, folks. From there, the Lakers added big man Jaxson Hayes on a two-year, veteran's minimum deal, with a player option for the second season. The youngster has a lot of athleticism and hops, and showed flashes in New Orleans, but has been marred by tons of inconsistency. Hopefully, Phil Handy, Darvin Ham, LeBron James and the Lakers' general culture can unlock the best in Hayes, because unless another big man is brought on board at a vet min who outplays him, Hayes will need to hold down the important position of "backup center/dude who fills in during Anthony Davis' inevitable absences."All that said, two days of nice work for Rob Pelinka, who has the team, at minimum, in as good of a place as where they left off after the WCF loss.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. According to Michael Gapen, Bank of America's chief economist, the US economy will likely face a mild recession later this year, but the risk of a severe economic downturn appears low as of now. A correction of labor-market imbalances is needed to bring inflation back down to the Federal Reserve's 2% target, and that typically looks like a mild recession. With risks receding, stress in the banking sector stabilizing, and macroeconomic trends looking good, Gapen said the Fed faces a tough decision regarding interest rates and investors can't completely rule out the possibility of another hike.In this episode of The Higher Standard, Chris and Saied examine this news and determine the effect it will have on the economy as a whole. They discuss a report from the Labor Department, indicating that initial filings for unemployment benefits totaled a seasonally adjusted 261,000 for the week ended June 3, an increase of 28,000 from the upwardly revised level of the previous period.Chris and Saied look at data from Realtor.com with the National Association of Realtors, showing that the popular 30-year fixed mortgage rate hovered in the high-6% range in May. At that level, buyers with an annual income of $100,000, slightly above the national median, could afford a house with a maximum price of about $341,000, however just 39% of the homes for sale were listed at or below that price point in May.They also offer some thoughts on a new real estate transfer tax in Los Angeles, that was supposed to give the city an average of $56 million a month in its first year. However, in its first month, the Measure ULA tax took in $3.6 million. For transactions closing in April, the city received the revenue from five deals that were subject to the new tax.Join Chris and Saied for this fascinating and informative conversation.Enjoy! What You'll Learn in this Show:Why growth is often used as a metaphor of prosperity. Why a credit crunch has already begun in the commercial office real estate. Why Larry Summers thinks the Fed has made a huge mistake, and why that's wrong. And so much more...Resources:"The US will face a mild recession, but the risk of a 'hard landing' is currently low, Bank of America's chief economist says" (Business Insider)"Jobless claims increase more than expected to their highest since October 2021" (CNBC)"U.S. consumer-credit growth accelerates in April to fastest pace in five months" (MarketWatch)"The shortage of houses is hitting some people and areas harder than others" (CNBC)"The “mansion tax” was supposed to bring in $56M monthly. Here is a link to the new study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36377... Swan In the tradition of Silent Spring and The Sixth Extinction, an urgent, “disturbing, empowering, and essential” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) book about the ways in which chemicals in the modern environment are changing—and endangering—human sexuality and fertility on the grandest scale, from renowned epidemiologist Shanna Swan. In 2017, author Shanna Swan and her team of researchers completed a major study. They found that over the past four decades, sperm levels among men in Western countries have dropped by more than 50 percent. They came to this conclusion after examining 185 studies involving close to 45,000 healthy men. The result sent shockwaves around the globe—but the story didn't end there. It turns out our sexual development is changing in broader ways, for both men and women and even other species, and that the modern world is on pace to become an infertile one. How and why could this happen? What is hijacking our fertility and our health? Count Down unpacks these questions, revealing what Swan and other researchers have learned about how both lifestyle and chemical exposures are affecting our fertility, sexual development—potentially including the increase in gender fluidity—and general health as a species. Engagingly explaining the science and repercussions of these worldwide threats and providing simple and practical guidelines for effectively avoiding chemical goods (from water bottles to shaving cream) both as individuals and societies, Count Down is “staggering in its findings” (Erin Brockovich, The Guardian) and “will serve as an awakening” (The New York Times Book Review). Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Entrepreneurship ETG Might Be Better Than 80k Thought, published by Ben West on December 29, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary In 2014, Ryan Carey estimated that YCombinator-backed startup founders averaged $2.5M/year I repeat his analysis, and find that this number is now substantially higher: $3.8-9.9M/year When this amount is discounted by 12%/year (average S&P 500 returns) this falls to $1.9-4.3M/y, and with a 20%/year discount (a number I've heard for returns to community building) it falls to $1.1-2.9M/y. Note that these numbers include illiquid (pre-exit) valuations. Major Results 0% discount$3.77M/y$8.17M/y12% discount$1.98M/y$4.28M/y20% discount$1.34M/y$2.90M/y Discount All companies Excluding post-2019 Average founder income under different discount rates. “All companies” includes in the denominator every company incubated by YCombinator; “excluding post-2019” excludes companies incubated after 2019 (which presumably are less likely to make it to the list of top YCombinator companies by valuation, and therefore arguably should be excluded from consideration). Weighted Per Year 0% discount$4.56M/y$9.87M/y12% discount$1.84M/y$3.98M/y20% discount$1.06M/y$2.30M/y Discount All companies Excluding post-2019 This table is the same as the above except it e.g. counts a company which has been around for 4 years twice as much as one which has been around for 2 years. I.e. this table is the expected value of a founder-year, whereas the previous table is the expected annual value of founding a company. I'm not sure which is more intuitive. Commentary Background: See this 80k article for the basic case behind considering entrepreneurship for earning to give reasons. These numbers seem fairly high, and may indicate that earning to give through entrepreneurship is a good path for those who have solid personal fit (with the usual caveats about only pursuing ethical startup careers; see also my analysis of YCombinator fraud rates). With a 20% annual discount the numbers are not that far off from what I've heard as higher-end estimates of the value of direct work, and I expect that there is a fairly strong correlation between being at the higher end of entrepreneurship returns and being at the higher end of direct work, so this doesn't seem like that strong of an argument for entrepreneurship over direct work. My impression is that these numbers are roughly similar to average quantitative finance income, so I'm not sure there's much of an argument for one over the other based on this data (from an income perspective). Note that the vast majority of founders who apply to YCombinator are rejected, and this is not considered in these estimates. Appendix A: Methods and Data Note: if you know Python, reading the Jupyter notebook might be easier than following this document. Methods Used this list of YCombinator top companies and tried to find public information about their most recent valuation. Importantly, note that this is including pre-exit valuations. For publicly traded companies, I used their market capitalization at the time of writing (rather than when they IPO'd). I used an estimate of 2.3 people per founding team and average equity ownership of 35% from the original 80 K article. These numbers could probably use an update. The discount was calculated using a straightforward geometric discount, i.e. receiving $N in Y years with discount rate d has a net present value of (1-d)^Y N. I assume that everything not on that list is valued at zero. This is obviously an underestimate; but I think it's not too far off: I estimate the value of the company at the bottom of the list (Karbon Card) at $60M If the 1,788 companies started after 2019 who are not in this list were all valued at $60M, this would increase the total valuation by $107B = 19.5% This is a very conse...

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants' spending is always a hot topic around these parts every offseason. That conversation may be louder than ever before this winter, with the SF Giants coming off a very disappointing 81-81 record after they won 107 games in 2021. The fanbase is restless, the payroll has been stagnant, and there are stars available for the Giants to sign, if only they were willing to do so.Understanding where the Giants stand from a payroll perspective is important if we wish to predict what they will be able to spend this offseason. The Giants have relatively few commitments to 2023 salaries. They owe $73 million to eight players, not including the $22.5M Carlos Rodón will undoubtedly opt out of. That also includes the $5M buyout on the Giants' $13M club option over Evan Longoria. The SF Giants' arbitration estimates, per MLB Trade Rumors, are for $33.3M going to 13 players. The Giants will have the power to negotiate these salaries, and they are not committed to paying any of them if they'd prefer to non-tender any arbitration-eligible player.Add it all up, and the San Francisco Giants are looking at roughly $106 million going to 21 players. This does not include any pre-arbitration estimates for the Giants. And again, they can non-tender any arbitration-eligible player and won't be obligated to pay a dime. But this is a good rough starting point. And what it means for the Giants, in terms of offseason spending, is that they'd have about $56M to spend on 2023 salaries just to get back to their extremely modest range of about $162M, where they've been each of the last few years. So you could essentially sign a couple of $30M per year players and still come in with a very modest payroll. Hopefully the Giants increase payroll this year, but they're starting from a very flexible position and a big offseason for the Giants is more than possible.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

nonprofit news for the last week of March 2022. Russia Ukraine War Galvanizes Large-Scale Global Giving According to survey research reported by The NonProfit Times, approximately one quarter of Americans said they've donated to charities addressing the war in Ukraine. Nearly two-thirds of the remaining Americans surveyed say they planned to donate soon. While grassroots giving continues to drive momentum, alternate forms of giving are soaring. An NFT of the Ukrainian Flag launched by a member of the band Pussy Riot raised $6.75 million for the country, in a sale organized by Ukraine DAO. Corporations and companies are donating too, even Fortnite video game creator Epic Games will donate all in-game transactions directly to United Nations relief efforts. We've got some news about the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and how that's leading to global giving at unprecedented scale as well as big acquisition in the crypto donation sector. So how we doing Nick? [00:00:22] I'm doing well, George, how are you? [00:00:24] Doing all right today, another busy week of news. [00:00:27] Absolutely our first story this week, of course, we will be returning to the war in Ukraine and we wanted to report out some interesting trends that we're seeing as reported by. The nonprofit times, approximately one quarter of Americans said that they have donated to charities addressing the war in Ukraine. [00:00:50] We talk a lot on this podcast about surge in attention. It seems that in this case, a surge in attention is being sustained and leading to really high volumes of giving. Not only at the grassroots individual donor level, the. But also an alternate and more broad forms of giving as well. An NFT of the Ukrainian flag launched by a member of the band pussy riot raised $6.5 million for the country in a sale. [00:01:22] Corporations and companies are donating to, I thought this was really cool. Fortnite video game creator, epic games will donate all in game transactions directly to the United nations over the next couple weeks. And to me, what this is showing is that this isn't that spike that we see. That often a accompanies global events like Afghanistan. [00:01:46] We saw that lasted really only a week. The outpouring of support and awareness. This is sustained and not only are individual donors giving, but at the institutional, the corporate level, this is an all hands on deck effort to provide support to Ukraine. George, I wonder. What this is telling us about fundraising as a hold right now as we witness this war and essentially large scale global giving. [00:02:17] You're seeing a lot of different sectors step up, which is why we were just picking some of these different industries. You're talking about games you're talking about crypto and then traditional giving as well. That once in a generation type of land war has evoked. [00:02:31] I wanna touch on that sort of question about the trend, right? So you said with Afghanistan or with a natural disaster, you're talking about the natural half life, which is measured in weeks, not months in terms of how long compassion can and hold. A global focus for giving. [00:02:48] and response. [00:02:50] And it's dangerous because compassion is an unstable emotion. It is something that people pay attention to burns brightly and briefly. The faster, the rise, the faster, the fall, what I'm starting to see, believe it or not though, in things like Google transfer search incidents is that, that decline from initial peak interest from when the war first began, I concern is that as this drags potentially into what some military experts are talking about as a stalemate, it will cease to, to garner that type of reaction. [00:03:22] And. Immediately they were talking about in that article things around helping refugees, medical supplies, and then less so on the rebuilding. Let's just be clear. There's just going to be rubble more rubble than city left in a lot of these situations requiring a lot of ongoing support. [00:03:39] Hopefully the trend in search isn't indicative of what may or may not be coming in terms of ongoing support that will be needed to rebuild that country. When this conflict inevitably finds its end. [00:03:52] Yeah, George, I think that's a great point. And one of the more interesting facets the various forms of giving that we highlighted was epic games. The creator of Fortnite, one of the most popular games in the world, donating all in game transactions to the United nations one. That's true, tremendous from the giving perspective, but also. [00:04:13] From an awareness perspective, think about how many kids and how many different countries are playing that game are now aware of a refugee crisis. And I wonder, are there ways we can build on that for other refugee crisis, other humanitarian crisis? Can this represent the beginning of. A shift in how corporations engage with global events and crises that need attention and outpouring support. [00:04:42] I don't know if this is a one-off or this is a sustained change. But to me that's a really interesting model. Being able to focus attention on a humanitarian event in this way is really interesting to see. So I'm sure that we'll follow this [00:04:59] Yeah it's tracking the classic attention spike that we normally see for a large global scaled natural disasters. But this is a again, once in a generation moment. So it's hard to say what is actually being learned outside of the fact that. If your organization is adjacent, communication narratives are very important as it's as it's part of how people are probably choosing to give right now and make those decisions. [00:05:26] Yeah, we'll talk about this in another story as well, but particularly for other organizations, I think what could be interesting is thinking about how to use the crisis and use in Ukraine and uses is the wrong word, but. Use this opportunity of increasing heightened attention to call attention to other crises, other refugee situations in Afghanistan, there are still Afghan refugees coming to the United States that local NGOs are directly supporting. [00:05:57] And while everyone's talking about refugees, I wonder if we, you can call attention to other crises that are happening as well. So definitely something we'll keep an eye on. [00:06:07] All right, I'll take us into our next story. And this is about crypto donation platform, the giving block, joining forces with payment processing company shift four. So in a press release. Provided by the giving block this week, they announced the biggest crypto philanthropy campaign in series and history. [00:06:28] So the giving block is a crypto donation platform service company, and they are teaming up with this payment processing company shipped for shift four, excuse me. And they'll be offer. Crypto philanthropy options to nearly 200,000 of shift fours, merchants. And there's also millions of dollars in Don donation matching pools that in some ways, this has the potential to really change the game when it comes to crypto philanthropy with lots of merchants involved and huge ability to reach different customers. [00:07:03] Full disclosure. The giving block is a client of whole whale, the publisher of this newsletter, but George, this could represent a really big moment in the world of crypto philanthropy. What are your thoughts on this? [00:07:16] I'm really excited about this. And as you mentioned they're a client and this? [00:07:20] is a a pretty big purchase showing that there is a lot of growth to come and opportunity there in crypto philanthropy and helping giving block become and cement themselves as the leader in terms of solutions there. [00:07:33] I was also excited that shift for CEO Jared eman. We'll match 10 million in crypto, which is just awesome and donations on the giving block. So it's also a nice level boost to to encourage that giving [00:07:45] Absolutely. You'd love to see matching when it comes to when it becomes millions of dollars. That's lots of impact. That's exciting. All right. Shall we dive into the summary? [00:07:55] Let's get to it. [00:07:56] All right. Our first story comes from Politico and this is about a liberal donor by the Swiss born billionaire, Hans York, vice. And I apologize cuz I know I mispronounce that, but this billionaire sent 31 million to the 1630 fund, which is a. Quote unquote, dark money fund on the left political action fund. [00:08:25] That spent approximately 56 million in 2020. So we talk a lot about money moving around via nonprofits on this podcast. And this is just another example of. Quite frankly, the scale of money churning through various organizations and how it impacts our politics. And I don't have a specific take on this, but whenever a story pops up in our feed and it starts talking about 20, 30, $50 million it gets our attention. [00:08:58] And I think it again, brings to the forefront. Lots of conversations about just the amount of money sloshing around. In American politics on whether or not this is healthy. [00:09:08] Yeah. According to that nine 90, the 1630 fund has become massive growing from what it used to be. If. You million of dollars in revenue a year in the last decade to 400 million in the final year of the Trump presidency. I think that's not insignificant going to, to something of that size and scope. [00:09:30] Absolutely. That's a lot of money. And I think that, I think it's time that we have renewed conversations about campaign finance and lots of these organizations, which quite frankly are not household names. And how they're influencing elections, politics, ballot measures, that sort of thing, a across the whole spectrum, the whole ideological political spectrum as well. [00:09:53] It happens on both sides. So an interesting conversation. And a story will follow going into this year. Of course, the 2022 midterms, which should be another record spending year for midterms, but something will continue to track. [00:10:08] All right, I'll take us into our next story. And this comes from the new humanitarian. This is a source that we've not yet featured on the podcast, but one that does really good, critical analysis of the humanitarian and international NGO sector. They provide lots of really interesting analysis and opinions. [00:10:26] Often with the perspective of trying to improve the humanitarian industry as a whole, but they have this article called beyond Ukraine, eight more humanitarian disasters that demand your attention. And it does a really good job of highlighting different crises. Across the world beyond Ukraine, it talks about crisis in the horn of Africa, talks about the number of millions of peoples being impacted there. [00:10:55] Me on Mar. Which unfortunately just saw a coup and just yesterday, secretary of state, Tony blink, officially called what was happening in Myanmar a genocide. It takes a long time for governments to get to that distinction because genocide actually has legal requirements, not requirements to say, but it has legal parameters. [00:11:14] And I wanted to just surface this article because I think it offers really. Interesting perspectives on how we respond to humanitarian crises. And right now the crisis in Ukraine is nothing short of extreme and requires all the attention. But I think at the same time, there are lots of other crises that. [00:11:32] Also require attention and for nonprofits, I think this can be an interesting moment of heightened attention when people are especially in tune to refugee crises, for example, to acknowledge that there are other ongoing refugee crises around the world in Myanmar, in Afghanistan. Lots of different places. [00:11:54] So Georgia, I wonder what your perspective is on this kind of analysis and using this moment to bring other crises to the forefront as well. [00:12:02] Hopefully the infrastructure that is currently being built up to support the millions. Of displaced people and refugees from Ukraine, that type of infrastructure and support will hopefully include the ability and capacity for these organizations and institutions to take on refugees from other areas. [00:12:25] And it's especially important to note. And I'm glad you included this, that when there is a sort of massive focus a world. Attention grabbing event, as we were just talking about, it sucks, the oxygen out. It sucks. The the attention which money follows quite closely from other areas. So all things being equal, it is probably a very bad time. [00:12:46] It's always a bad time to be a refugee, to be somebody in a place of conflict in crisis. But especially when there is a larger one overshadowing, it it's easy to miss. Unfortunately other people, regions and communities in need. [00:13:02] Absolut. I think that is a great point. And to your point about infrastructure, I think what you're seeing is a lot of organizations that are able to respond to the crisis in Ukraine have been building infrastructure for quite a while. Ukraine has been fighting a war for quite a while. Doctors with borders has been operating there for quite a while and have in so many other places. [00:13:25] So it's really tremendous to see NGOs and nonprofits. When they have that on the ground infrastructure, they're ready to go. When the crisis happens, they're the first responders there. So building capacity, not just in Eastern Europe, but all over the world is vitally important. [00:13:42] All right. Our next story is about a organization called free will. They are a social good enterprise. That quote is at the nexus of philanthropy and a estate planning and quote, and they have announced it is raised. 30 million in series B funding led by ban capital double impact. The takeaway from this is you have an organization that is supporting estate planning and planned giving that has just gotten injected with a ton of money and funding to hopefully help nonprofits. [00:14:19] And other charities increase their ability to process and accept planned giving as a vehicle for fundraising and George. We were talking right before the podcast about why this is so important at this moment. And I'd love to hear your thoughts. [00:14:34] Yeah, free will is a pretty elegant tool I'd say for creating will and we're entering into the largest wealth transfer in human history. If you're talking about the boomer generation passing on their wealth and life's assets to the following generation and it's it can be A's topic to talk about it's not about death. [00:14:56] It's about. Legacy. And it's about an opportunity, frankly, for a lot of nonprofits to include the potential question in ways of bringing up big quests for the organization, we had a previous podcast with with an expert on that topic that will include in the show notes as well. [00:15:12] Absolutely. That's a great perspective. All right. Our next story comes from my CBS four.com local CBS four news affiliate out of Florida. And the title of this story is paint at the pump. Gas prices impact north central, Florida nonprofit, and the story delves into how nonprofit organization children's table, which provides food and other services to underserved folks in their community is really struggling because of rising food costs and gas costs. [00:15:47] They move lots of physical goods across the state food and whatnot, and. They have big vans, big truck type things. And when gas prices go up, they start to feel it. So we just wanted to, I think, highlight this story and show that these kind of macro economic issues, gas prices, food prices, inflation, not entirely separate. [00:16:09] Unfortunately the global events you've been discussing this has real impact for nonprofits and just acknowledging that and the story here. [00:16:16] We saw a lot of these stories. I just happened to throw a dart at you north central Florida. But this story is certainly popping up on a lot of locals. Anybody who is. Bringing resources that last mile to underserved in resource communities is dealing with very direct cost at the pump type of pieces that don't necessarily quickly translate into increased revenue. [00:16:40] Right? There's no sort of, Hey, sorry We delivered this meal for you. It's gonna cost extra actually. No this is done by the volunteers were doing this out of pocket to provide this service. So it's pretty tough to I think. Impact a lot of nonprofits, locally, local community based organizations that are doing this. [00:16:56] Also I just did a quick look up on that last topic about planned giving. Our friend is Tony martini planned giving accelerator.com. Just to give him a little plug here, planned giving accelerator.com. Look, he's helping folks do these planned giving programs and walks your fundraisers through to avoid the common mistakes and demystify itself. [00:17:16] Shout out there for a resource. [00:17:18] We love a good shout out. Thank you for sharing. All right, George, we don't have a feel good today, but instead we're going to bring up an opinion piece and this comes courtesy of tablet magazine, and the title is called. What happens when a buffet buys your town? George, I know you have thoughts. What, what stuck out to you about this? [00:17:38] There's a lot that stuck out to this and it's just wonderfully written first off, just wonderfully written from tablet magazine, and they just do such a brilliant in depth. Look at what happens when Peter buffet one of the children of Warren buffet is running the Novo foundation. [00:17:56] With his wife and they had a particular history of giving to certain causes related to women and African American and bipo communities. And then suddenly they just an about face completely just saying, all right, we're done with this? [00:18:11] type of grant making we're instead going to focus all of our time, attention and wealth on. [00:18:16] A community in Kingston, New York, and have just gone about rearchitecting the town by writing giant checks, underwriting, various things, creating their own local, like community currency and this type of utopia, borderline potential dis opiate, if potentially, I don't know, say the opinions of a billionaire change. [00:18:39] I think this is not meant to just throw stones at the Noah foundation or this particular piece, but to abstract more broadly into macro narratives of what happens when you have independently wealthy individuals guiding this much in terms of resource is in philanthropic communities. [00:18:57] And sometimes the damage that can be done when. Priorities shift on a whim and we've causes that are trying to build for decades long solutions virtually overnight. And it is a cautionary tale to both the people that work, run and support and are probably more important. Certainly reliant maybe on some of these types of philanthropic gifts from. [00:19:22] Independently wealthy family foundations like this it's worth a read and it's very well written. [00:19:28] Absolutely. I think you bring up so many questions and this article does a great job of bringing them up as well. Absolutely worth a read in the nonprofit news feed, which you can subscribe to not@nonprofitnewsfeed.com. George. That's it for the podcast [00:19:45] Thanks, Nick. [00:19:46] thanks, George.
nonprofit news for the last week of March 2022. Imagine starting your own recruitment business with zero experience in recruitment and only 10 days later the world comes to a standstill with 9/11. This is how the story of Mark Brown, co-founder and director of Worldwide Recruitment Solutions (WRS) started. However, this wasn't the last obstacle in his way. Their niche field was financial institutions with a specific focus on the mortgage market when the 2008 financial collapse took place. From there they transitioned their business into serving the oil and gas industry and 2014 came along, seeing the oil industry plummeting. In this podcast, Mark expands on how they still managed to grow WRS to revenue of £56 million and EBITA of £1.7M with 4 international offices (UK, Singapore, Iraq & Uganda), becoming the 3rd fastest growing recruitment company in the UK. Episode Outline and Highlights: [1:24] The journey from call centre manager to founding a recruitment business [4:51] 10 days after launching 9/11 rocked the world [6:15] The urgently search for a new niche and stumbling into the world of finance [9:50] A career of surviving and thriving the worst of downtimes [13:55] Expanding internationally [15:22] Sep 2008 - started World Recruitment Solutions (WRS) [16:27] The motto of “Cash is King” helped them weather the storms [20:42] The simple model that proved effective in following their vision [25:10] 2011 WRS entered the oil and gas industry, the cash cow they needed [27:50] How to grow your business from 5 - 30 people in 3 years [29:50] The secrets to enjoying a 90% staff retention [37:48] And then the oil industry plummeted - surviving another crisis [46:43] Solving infrastructure challenges with the right tech stack and automation [54:00] Winning the Sunday Times Award for Best Small Company to Work For [55:48] Why creating a respectful environment is so important at WRS [59:35] Where is WRS heading the future? Cash Is King “You talk about systems but there weren't any systems. The reality was that this was a decision that I'd taken on the back of good advice. I think the advice I was given besides that cash is king is to make sure you've always got a minimum of 6 and ideally 9 months worth of working capital, business as usual working capital so that you can keep the lights on,” Mark explains how they managed to survive and thrive through 4 major global financial crises. How to Scale Your Business to 30 People In a matter of three years, WRS grew from 5 to 30 people. On top of that, they also have an employee retention rate of 90%. Mark compared their system to that of Jack and the Beanstalk where they had four department heads and added new team members underneath each one. The following factors all influenced their success in hiring the right people to fall underneath these heads: An organizational structure that allowed them to bring in individuals to work underneath a certain line manager They employed trainees They looked for a certain DNA in these individuals WRS had an excellent training platform By appointing a learning and development manager Employing outside experts to fill knowledge gaps However, what added more value to the business was the high retention rate that sometimes was above 90%. As WRS always gave their staff the perfect runway to grow within, staff would very seldom leave the business. Mark also pointed out that they created a clear path for everyone joining the firm and they offered a space without any glass ceilings and where the opinion of employees was respected. Why Did WRS Win The Sunday Times Best Small Company to Work for Award? Mark states that even though the company has grown tremendously since its early days, they've maintained the same kind of culture. The management team, the L&D team and the culture of the business never changed. “I refer back to respect, fair environment, an environment where people feel they belong, feel they have a voice, feel they have an input, they understand the purpose of the company and the direction of travel and that is through constant communication,” Mark shares why he believes they won the award for being the best small company to work for. Paul Powers, the founder and CEO of Physna. You may have caught Physna in the news recently because they've raised $76M over the last year, including $56M earlier this summer from Tiger Global, Sequoia and others. Paul and his team have created a new way to search and compare 3D models in a way that is faster and more effective than what's come before. This ability to recognize and understand physical objects, combined with Thangs, their online database of 3D models, creates the potential for them to become the Google Search of AR. Earlier, Paul attended Harvard at the age of 16, and went on to study in Germany, earning a law degree and passing the German bar exam. It was his work at a German patent law firm that inspired the foundation for what became Physna. In this conversation, Paul describes his unique educational experience and his path to becoming a tech entrepreneur. He goes on to describe the origins of Physna and how they are enabling computers to understand 3D in the same way they understand text. We talk through the technology and we discuss leadership, entrepreneurial mindset, a different way of thinking about goal setting, and aligning and motivating others. He also shares his perspective of the potential impact that glasses-based AR can have on the human experience. You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com.
No, lamentablemente no hablamos de dónde estábamos cuando tembló un día antes de grabar. I also expect to see an exodus of talent as employees explore new opportunities. Some may become angel investors and pump more funds into the crypto sector. Crypto Twitter is divided on whether or not to invest in Coinbase. Bitcoin maximalists believe bitcoin will outperform Coinbase in the long run. They are also fundamentally opposed to the centralized exchange. Pragmatists argue that Coinbase is a key part of the ecosystem. Besides, whenever crypto prices inevitably fall, Coinbase may prove more resilient than bitcoin. After all, Coinbase profits from transactions irrespective of the price. Q1: Robinhood had more crypto traders than CoinbaseIn Q1, 9.5M Robinhood customers had crypto transactions each month. This was ~50% higher than Coinbase’s monthly users (6.1M). Unlike Coinbase, Robinhood does not charge a commission for cryptocurrency transactions. However, Coinbase pays interest on deposits in its account and covers more cryptocurrencies. Robinhood and other companies with existing customer bases have an advantage over crypto native solutions that have to work harder to win each customer. This begs the question when will retail banks and other FinTechs enable customers to buy, sell, and store cryptocurrencies?Crypto crosses $2T The total value of all cryptocurrencies topped $2 trillion for the first time this week.Bitcoin accounts for more than 50% of this value. This week we reached a milestone where 100 cryptocurrencies were valued at $1B or more In Q1, the top 5 gainers were: BinanceCoin, Cardano, Uniswap, Polkadot, and Ripple. I hope to dive into these in the future. Crypto climate accordThe Crypto Climate Accord is styled after the Paris Climate Accord. It has an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions for the entire industry, including eliminating all historical emissions by 2030. Ripple, CoinShares and ConsenSys have joined the accord. I expect some other prominent players will follow in the months ahead. The environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining has been a hot button issue in recent months. CoinShares research found that 74% of cryptocurrency is powered by renewable energy largely due to surplus hydroelectric capacity in China. Critics think it is lower. The push to net-zero emissions may have implications for new miners aiming to use coal, gas and crude oil to power their operationsChinese companies pivot to cryptoChina is ground-zero for cryptocurrency. Much of the mining capacity, miner production, and national digital currency innovation is centered there. This week, two Chinese companies made significant pivots to become players in the cryptocurrency industry.The9, a publicly traded gaming company in China purchased $6M computers to become a cryptocurrency miner 500.com, an online lottery company in China, spent $100M to acquire Bee Computing, a manufacturer of cryptocurrency mining computers These moves are even more aggressive than what we have seen in the US. Mocnárov zosadil z trónov a povýšil ponížených. Hladných nakŕmil dobrotami a bohatých prepustil naprázdno.

When US Government Agencies call you in the middle of the greatest health and economic crisis in 100 years to help them detect social media disinformation about COVID-19, it is safe to assume your Artificial Intelligence capabilities to detect fake news, disinformation campaigns and their impact is amongst the most respected in the world. But when the Canadian government calls on you to help with the import and sale of COVID-19 test kits from South Korea, it is also safe to assume your trust and security clearances are at the highest levels possible. You would probably also assume such a company to be a tech giant or a Silicon Valley funded startup. But Datametrex AI (DM: TSXV) is neither. Rather, it is a great Canadian small cap technology company who happens to have: "developed strong relationships with many large multi-national companies in South Korea. As a result of these relationships, the Canadian Embassy in Seoul contacted Datametrex to ask for help in procuring rapid test kits." If that wasn't enough, Datametrex has also achieved the following as of late: When a small cap Artificial Intelligence company is successfully deploying its technology with military and conglomerates, as well as, being called upon by the Canadian federal government to ask for help with the greatest pandemic in 100 years, smart small cap investors are compelled to take a closer look.Q3 Revenues Of $1.6 million, an increase of 186% 9 Month Revenues Of $2.56M an increase of 37% Repeat Contracts Of $1M and $600,000 With Korean Giant LOTTE $954,000 Contract With Canadian Department of Defence To Fight Social Media Election Meddling Participation In NATO Research Task Group On Social Media Threat Detection Becoming an affiliate member of the Carnegie Mellon University Center for IDeaS That look can begin with our latest interview of Datametrex CEO, Marshall Gunter, who discusses obtaining the rights to import and sell COVID-19 test kits from South Korea and the impact it will have on the Company. Netflix Inc jumped +7.01%, recouping all of its COVID-19 induced losses and topping its previous record closing high of US$387.78 set on 18 February. Fellow television streaming company Roku Inc jumped over >10% in extended trading after announcing it added nearly 3M new users in the first three months of the year, more than the 2.56M net additions that analysts expected. The company said that collective streaming hours for the period was 13.2B, up 49% from last year. Amazon.com Inc rallied +6.17% after the e-commerce and cloud giant said it was hiring 75,000 more employees, in addition to the 100,000 it already hired, to help meet increased demand. Apple Inc (up +1.96%) and Google unveiled a rare partnership to add technology to their smartphone platforms that will alert users if they have come into contract with a person with COVID-19. People must opt in to the system known as contact tracing.

Historically access to celebrities was far removed and impersonal - glossy center magazines and billboards, fans were unable to interact with their favorite stars. Social media has fundamentally changed the interaction model; talent has increased its ability to leverage fandom into commercial opportunity and fans have come to expect more and more personalization and engagement. Cameo has fundamentally changed the game. Started just 3 years ago, the company has raised $56M to facilitate personalized messages from celebrities to fans. In this episode, I chatted with Steven Galanis Founder and CEO of Cameo and we touched on a number of topics including: (1) how the internet has changed engagement, (2) the network effects of building a fast growing marketplace business, (3) why Cameo is best positioned to compete against Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube, (4) the responsibilities that come with a fast growing, B2C organization and (5) ancillary use cases that can be created of Cameo at scale.

Until now, investor participation in Artificial Intelligence has been the domain of mega companies and those funded by Silicon Valley. It's no secret that diversity is an issue in the tech industry, but it is an even bigger issue when you look at the venture capital industry. Rich has conducted a lot of research on this topic and based on his last report, only 2% of African Americans were represented as investors in the venture capital industry. Rich is the type who takes action. By publishing his findings (which have been featured on TechCrunch, his personal blog, and in many other interviews), it helps to bring awareness to this key issue. In addition, Rich is also the founder of Stealth Mode, a community of more than 1,500 African American founders, operators, and investors. After spending time in the venture capital industry at IVP and Venrock, Rich is now a Co-Founder & General Partner at a new firm called Equal Ventures, which recently announced a $56M first fund. The firm is focused on bridging the digital divide by investing in founders who are transforming legacy markets in industries like insurance, retail, supply chain and the care economy. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * Rich's early career in investment banking and how he landed in the venture capital industry, which involved a lot of cold emailing to partners at firms. * All the details on Equal Ventures in terms of the firm's thesis and the stage of investments they are focused on. * What an investor is looking to get out of a first meeting. And so much more. If you like the show, please remember to subscribe and review us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Spotify, Stitcher, or Google Play.

Today, we continue the conversation with an Australian serial entrepreneur. Best known for co-founding the start-up Temando where he layered a level of technical intelligence over the entire fulfillment process of goods - It became one of the biggest technology companies in Australia – raising $56M in funding, and establishing 5 major global offices which was recently sold to a $1.5B Revenue French Listed Company! In many ways, he is living every Start Ups dream, and yet, I’m sure we will hear about the hurdles he had to jump to make it a success. Carl Hartmann has since co-founded Shortlyster as a response to the recruitment challenge he faced in growing his own tech business so quickly. Most recently, he is a co-founder of Lyre Spirit Co which has recreated the major alcoholic beverages in ‘non-alcoholic’ form. Lyre has quickly become one of the fastest growing new consumer products in the world!“Midas Touch” is what I keep thinking. Winning multiple awards like the IBM Global Entrepreneur of the Year Australia and being an adjunct professor of Entrepreneurship & Innovation, we clearly can learn a lot about “taking an idea and creating it into a living, breathing entity in the world! Thanks Carl for spending time sharing your journey with us… The Goods on Carl:Carl Hartmann is a prominent, multi-award winning Australian serial entrepreneur, who is best known for his work in co-founding Temando, Shortlyster and Lyre’s Spirit Co, and his involvement as an investor & board member/advisor to a range of leading technology companies around the world, including AI cross border compliance platform Hurricane (UK), electric Jetboard manufacturer Radinn (Sweden), drone delivery company Flirtey (USA), leading LATAM shipping platform Intelipost (Brazil) and FMCG solutions platform Brandlink (Australia).Carl Co-Founded his first start up Temando in response to the disconnect between the delivery experience consumers were receiving and the fulfillment capability of today’s merchants. Carl realized the need for a layer of technical intelligence over the entire fulfillment process - from wherever goods are, to wherever they need to be, no matter how they need to get there. Carl took Temando from an idea to one of the largest Australian technology companies, having raised over $56M in funding, established 5 major global offices and established many global strategic partnerships with both carriers and technology partners, and was successfully acquired in a trade sale by Neopost S.A. ($1.5B Revenue French Listed Company) in 2017.Having experience firsthand the challenges of recruitment in a fast-growing technology company, after exiting Temando, Carl co-founded Shortlyster, an intelligent recruitment platform that solves the problem of matching candidates to job roles with specific skill sets, and helps ensure candidates are the right fit for organisational cultures. The platform uses a big data approach and applies its unique algorithms to match candidates to role requirements. It actively compares and contrasts candidates and rank orders them according to suitability. Shortlyster helps companies save time and money in their recruitment process and more importantly, help them get the right candidates with the right skills, the right qualifications, and right person-fit characteristics. Shortlyster has raised $5M in funding to date, and is now going through tremendous growth across Australia, the UK and USA.Most recently, Carl also co-founded Lyre’s Spirit Co – an innovative beverage company using cutting edge food science, that has recreated all the major alcoholic spirits in non-alcoholic format, in response to growing segments of the population who either do not drink alcohol or choose to drink less – but still want an the taste of an adult drink.
Interview with Merlin Marr-Johnson, Director of Salazar Resources (TSX-V: SRL).We're back with another interview with Salazar Resources, an Ecuadorian/Colombian exploration and project development company that offers investors exposure to gold, copper and silver resources, and copper-zinc VMS deposits. This years Exploration is fully financed, courtesy of a JV with Adventus Mining Corp.Salazar Resources started the year with a share price of CAD$0.11 but has risen to CAD$0.21 today. The company has a market cap of CAD$26.56M.A common theme amongst smaller junior mining companies is the lack of a coherent business plan; it usually goes: we're going to acquire a licence, we're going to drill it, we're going to see if it's worth drilling further, then we're going to drill again. Salazar Resources has a refreshing approach. It has a clear Business Plan, has structured a financing plan via a farm-out, consultancy fees and leasing of 3 fully owned drill rigs. They currently have c.$5M in the bank. With an additional recurring income and an extremely low G&A. Marr-Johnson says that their exploration program for this year is consequently fully funded. The partnership with a larger mining company, Adventus Mining Corp., looks promising on paper and means Salazar Resources expects no dilution in 2020 for shareholders. Salazar Resources has just farmed out its first gold-copper asset, the El Domo Curipamba VMS (Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide) ore deposit discovery. It now looks to employ a cookie-cutter approach to continue the development of its portfolio of Ecuadorian and Colombian mining assets. The cash burn is minimal and the numbers look attractive.Marr-Johnson himself has an impressive resume, with recent experience at Uranium producer and zinc revenue generator Global Atomic Corp. Ex-Newmont country team leader and Salazar Resources CEO, Fredy Salazar, is a vastly experienced Ecuadorian geologist. He is the go-to geologist for the many majors in Ecuador.Marr-Johnson is keen to state the respect Salazar Resources' name holds in Ecuador, both locally and nationally. By ensuring they work with local communities to implement sustainable mining practices, and maintaining a good relationship with government officials, Salazar is a respected name in the up-and-coming mining jurisdiction of Ecuador. Investors are taking them much more seriously than most juniors; should we too?Investors can also see growth from the seemingly reliable development of existing copper/gold/silver/zinc assets, but what about the future? Marr-Johnson states Salazar Resources always has its eyes open for potential acquisitions that could add value for shareholders. This appears to be junior mining done right: something of a rarity in a market of big promises and disappointing delivery. However, they need to keep their feet on the ground. While the evidence appears to be positive, let's see how Salazar delivers over the coming months. What did you make of Merlin Marr-Johnson? Has Salazar Resources impressed you with its gold/silver/copper/zinc discoveries? What about the business plan? How do you rate Ecuador and Colombia as mining constituencies? BAKED AND AWAKE SHOWEpisode 09- A Hanford/Maury Island Connection Host: Steve Cominski Co Host: George W. Masters 07 October 2017 Welcome back to EP09 of The Baked and Awake Show. I’m Steve, and I’ll be your host for this latest edition of the show, that at the time of publication, is the first of our shows available in the iTunes and GooglePlay stores!! We are ALSO available to stream and download in the Tunein, Stitcher (Applause!). Today on the show we are going to talk (more than we already have) about everybody’s favorite “new” way to smoke weed- Dabbing, and it’s not so new, and somewhat mysterious origins. We’ll also drop back into the ever informative Hemp History timeline, starting at 1900, and see what the 20th Century has to offer our Photogenic Protagonist, Cannabis, and its hard working and continuously underrated Sister, The Hemp Plant. Finally, it’s a return to Maury - Vashon Island, with some lesser known history of the Island, as well as a possible connection between a famous UFO incident of 1947 that bears the Island’s name, and another mysterious as well as eternally super deadly dangerous- Hanford Nuclear Power Plant. Strain of The Week CBD Strains!! Blue Roots Cannabis Durban Poison CBD Terpene Honey, Purchased at Clutch Cannabis, Renton WA Dabbing, and it’s Conspiratorial Origins will be covered in the HH timeline, below. Hemp History Timeline 1900- 1942 The Dawn of Cannabis and Hemp as we know it 1910- Mexican Revolution introduces recreational consumption to America 1914- The Harrison Act is passed- bad things to come 1919- Alcohol Prohibition begins (!!) 1924- Russian Botanists classify Cannabis Ruderalis -an interesting genotype that we will visit in more detail in a future episode or episodes 1933- Prohibition ends, actually ramping up pressure on MJ as the next target of the ever growing US law enforcement apparatus’ which now includes a very active Department of Justice, the FBI, the aforementioned OSS, and more. 1942- Henry Ford develops a car that runs on Hemp Ethanol. In a separate project Ford builds an experimental Hemp Car body 10x stronger than steel and significantly lighter- (In a way foreshadowing fiberglass, plastics, and carbon fiber tech during the WWII era?) The United States OSS, precursor Organization to the NSA/CIA, develops a highly potent MJ concentrate, made using Ethanol Alcohol as the solvent- dubbed “Truth Serum”. Codenamed “TD” for Truth Drug, it was administered to unknowing subjects as part of interviews and interrogations in the US and Canada throughout the run of the controversial and super conspiratorial CIA “MK Ultra” program. UFO’s over Hanford and a possible Maury Island Connection Recap of Maury Island Incident (Short) History of Hanford (Short- Maybe PK) UFO’s over Hanford in 1945 NICAP Official Report UFO’s over Hanford Project 1947 Twin Peaks Connection Check recent IG posts, saved (email to this account) about Hanford and weird unidentified particles falling from the sky, flying objects observed -sc AWAKE OPEN CASE No 001 The Hanford Site Hanford, to be honest- is almost too big of a topic to tackle at our tender stage of development here at Baked and Awake. The only reason that I feel alright taking this up at all, is because of all the many topics we hope to cover here over the next few years, Hanford is one that, more than many others, tends to be rarely discussed, even by avid counter culture loving types and the “Conspiracy Crowd”. Hanford is a massive 586 square mile parcel of land in Washington State that housed the most important nuclear weapons production facility in the United States. It produced almost 80% of the radioactive material used in the United States. It houses 56M gal of liquid waste and 25m cubic feet of solid waste. It is the largest superfund cleanup project in the UNited States. After the roof collapsed in a tunnel on the site in May 2017, Hanford released a statement that "no evidence of radiological release" was detected. It should be noted of course that Hanford officials ignored warnings given by experts in 1980 in regards to the condition of the structure and the dangers of its contents. ALSO IN MAY 2017 - radioactive contamination was unexpectedly detected during checks on an underground storage tank. In another incident that same month, workers’ clothes were found to have been contaminated with plutonium, though the source of the contamination was not determined. August 2017 - an airborne release during demolition of a building on the Hanford site was detected. The air tests were not expected to contain traces of plutonium. The airborne particles were assumed the result of the demolition but there has not been a conclusive determination of causality. In 2016, more than 50 workers were exposed to toxic gases, resulting in illness. More than a 1.3 BILLION dollars has been paid to workers who have been harmed at Hanford. These "unexpected" discoveries of contamination are almost certainly symptoms of a larger problem. Laziness and greed. The cost and effort necessary to address the issues is just too much for them to handle, so they lie and avoid and hide the evidence. From what I read while researching this issue, I would say the danger is clear and present. Now there are some real problems with this, other than the shortcomings of the officials in power. For instance, the cleanup is fabulously expensive. Estimates of the cleanup cost are in excess of $100 Billion. The current budget is $2.3 Billion, nowhere near enough to address matters in a sufficiently timely fashion. And Trump is cutting the existing budget by $120M. -The cleanup deadline is 2060, but experts believe many dangerous structures on the site will not survive that long. The underlying issue is human error and laziness. Hanford officials repeatedly dodge questions about the site and its management. Consider the number of earthquakes along the Pacific Rim in recent days and the dangers posed by the poorly maintained and aging Hanford facilities is amplified significantly. A major quake could release enough radioactive and otherwise toxic material into the air and water to cause widespread damage over an enormous portion of the Northwest.
Novo Resources raised $56M from Kirkland Lake and wow'ed at the Denver Gold Show. Novo founder and chairman Dr. Quinton Hennigh along with CEO Rob Humphryson provide an update on recent events and the company's plans over the next few months.
Bob Schimek, Director of Postal Affairs at Satori outlines the following developments with the USPS including the OIG, hiring freezes and how the post office scans every piece of your mail: OIG take a Look at RPG (Run Plan Generator) Usage: · USPS has 265 mail processing facilities that can use RPG to optimize machine usage and operation efficiency · OIG Looked at USPS Plants that had high and low RPG usage o High: Pittsburgh and Minneapolis (86 and 92% usage rate) o Low: Boston and Northern New Jersey (59 and 32% usage rate) o FYI: National average is 83% usage · First finding: RPG is not being used to maximize processing efficiency because the USPS has no criteria to measure performance · Looking at machine throughput, the low facilities were as much as 21% lower than the high usage facilities. · Productivity was 19% lower, and service performance scores were 1.6% to 4% lower. · Delayed mail volume was 27% higher at the low usage facilities. · OIG believes $1.8M could be saved over 3 Quarters by improving machine throughput to the national average. OIG Looks at Accuracy of Grievance Settlement Payments: · Back in Dec of 2014, USPS and APWU reached a $56M settlement over a long-standing grievance o Regarding postmasters and supervisors performing work designated to the APWU employees · $44.8M the USPS paid directly to clerks and $11.2 was put into an escrow to be disbursed in a manner determined by the union. · In January 2016 the USPS paid $40.2M to Employees o OIG determined that $11.5M was not accurately processed o Payment errors included: non-payments, underpayments, overpayments, and payment to employees not entitled. o Example: $75,129 was paid to 8 employees not even on the APWU list… USPS get confirmation that Trump Hiring Freeze does not apply to them · Verdict on if the 2 for 1 regulation requirement applies to the USPS or not. Can Law Enforcement Watch Your Mail? Yes · We all know that USPS plans to expand Informed Delivery Nationwide in 2017 · What people might not know is that the USPS currently scans every piece of mail. o Law Enforcement can request those scans for person of interest in felony or fugitive cases. o Last year, the USPS processed 49K request for those mail piece scans.
I'm going to be talking about a few things today. I'm going to speak about a woman who paid off her debt and what her budget looked like before and after paying off the debt. Budgets can be a wonderful tool to tell a story. I'm also going to speak about an article I found comparing 401K saving levels by age and income level. This will be enlightening to many. Lastly, I want to pose a question. How can something be good for the economy and yet be bad for the individual? I hear people television speaking all the time about how great it is that people are taking on more debt. Spending money on cars, clothes, really anything to stimulate the economy. Now, I'm all for pumping up the economy, but if people are spending all their earning and more on things and aren't saving enough for retirement and they aren't, how can it be good for the economy long term? It can't be! The population is aging and fast. In 2012 there were 43.1 million people age 65+. By 2020 that number will be 56M, 2040 it will be 79.1M and by 2060 it will be 92M. So what I see is a celebration of overspending by the economists making these broader economy statements. The same economists must realize social security can't support the rapidly aging population. They aren't sounding much of a warning bell as far as I can tell. If these people don't plan and save for their own retirement how many people will enter their "golden" years with little to no money saved. So, we may see a short term increase in new car sales and therefore create jobs in the hard hit city of Detroit among others. Is this the old saying "Live drink and be merry for tomorrow we die?" Maybe so, but the problem is we aren't dying. In fact we are living longer than ever. MONDAY, Jan. 6, 2014 -- Americans are living longer than ever and their life expectancy is increasing every year, federal health officials reported Monday. People born in 2009 can expect to live 78.5 years. That's an increase from just a year earlier -- when life expectancy at birth was 78.1 years. Since these latest statistics were collected, life expectancy has increased even more, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, and now stands at 78.7 years. Much of the continued increase in life expectancy owes to better treatment of cardiovascular disease, a CDC researcher said. As the population ages and lives longer, the bill for all this spending, borrowing, and lack of savings will come due. My question is how can something that is so bad for the individual be considered good for the economy. By what metic can this be true!?! The next time you hear someone say we need to spend our money to kick start the economy or that lower gas prices are good for consumers, but bad for the economy, please challenge this thinking. Take responsibility for your own life, do it now! Do it with urgency! The government or American business isn't coming to save you, me, or our children. We, the individuals, must do what's best for us, and that doesn't include a new car. God Bless You!
