What up Fellas!

EP 373 - This week we sit down with Jon White, a professional kayaker, engineer, business leadership coach and occasional rock climber, who would probably be doing none of those things if he hadn't lost his right arm and both legs stepping on an I.E.D. in Afghanistan in 2010.Jon is fascinating on how calm acceptance (and the royal marine value of humour in the face of adversity) helped him avoid PTSD. He's very clear that his personal approach might not work for everybody but we think that there is a lot to learn from his calm, understated approach to life.*For Apple Podcast chapters, access them from the menu in the bottom right corner of your player*Spotify Video Chapters:00:00 BWB with Jon White03:02 The Afghanistan Conflict Explained07:56 Life After Injury: Rehabilitation and Resilience24:41 The Importance of Mindset and Humour33:10 Rehabilitation and Adaptation36:13 Innovations in Prosthetics37:17 Personal Journey and Challenges38:56 Business Ventures and Leadership41:59 Engineering and Adaptation48:28 Philosophies on Life and Leadership54:31 Quickfire - Get To Know Jon01:05:42 Wrap Upbusinesswithoutbullshit.meWatch and subscribe to us on YouTubeFollow us:InstagramTikTokLinkedinTwitterFacebookIf you'd like to be on the show, get in contact - mail@businesswithoutbullshit.meBWB is powered by Oury Clark
Host Colin Weston met Jeff MacGregor at the 2023 PGA Show where he was launching The Cart Locker - a motorized cart storage solution for any facility that wants to enhance their operations while adding a new revenue source. Fast forward two years and we finally managed to align with Jeff's hectic schedule (he is also the Head Pro at The Glendale Golf & Country Club in Edmonton Alberta Canada!) to share his startup journey on The ModGolf Podcast. https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/l7lQWsnT.jpg Here are three key takeaways you will discover from Colin's engaging conversation with Jeff: 1. How Design Thinking Fuels Innovation in Golf: Jeff's journey with The Cart Locker highlights the importance of identifying and solving pain points within the golf industry. His innovative approach to creating a locker system for motorized carts not only addresses a logistical issue at his club but also opens up new revenue streams for golf courses. This emphasizes how innovation can lead to significant improvements in the golfing experience. 2. The Value in Building Relationships Jeff's success is rooted in the relationships he has cultivated over his years in the golf industry. His ability to leverage these connections has been crucial in gaining trust and support from other golf professionals and clubs. This serves as a reminder that networking and building strong relationships can be invaluable for entrepreneurs looking to launch new products or services. 3. Embracing Sustainable Business Practices: The Cart Locker's design and manufacturing process reflect a commitment to quality and sustainability. Jeff's decision to produce the lockers locally rather than overseas demonstrates a focus on durability and brand integrity. This takeaway encourages listeners to consider the long-term implications of their business decisions and the importance of maintaining high standards in product development. These insights not only provide valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs but also inspire a deeper appreciation for the evolving landscape of the golf industry. In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Troy Trewin interviews Solomon Thimothy, founder of ClickX, about his journey from freelancing in a café to leading a team of 80 across multiple business ventures. Solomon shares insights on building sustainable growth, mastering lead generation, and his proven Growth Formula. Learn how his focus on systems, partnerships, and mindset helped him scale ClickX and beyond over 18 successful years. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Solomon Thimothy, the hardest thing in growing a small business is getting out of your own way. Many entrepreneurs struggle to delegate and scale because they want to handle everything themselves. He emphasizes the importance of shifting from doing the work to leading, building systems, and trusting others to take ownership. Overcoming this fear and mindset is critical to achieving sustainable growth. What's your favourite business book that has helped you the most? Solomon Thimothy highlights that his favorite business books are those focused on personal development, like those by Brian Tracy. He believes these books are instrumental in shaping the mindset needed to tackle challenges and grow a business. For tactical advice, he recommends scaling-focused books like Scaling Up by Verne Harnish and The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber, which teach how to build systems and create a scalable business structure. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Solomon Thimothy recommends How I Built This by Guy Raz as one of his favorite podcasts, offering inspiring stories behind successful businesses, and also mentioned Business Wars as a valuable resource for understanding competitive dynamics between top brands. While he prefers books for professional development, consuming several at a time through Audible and AI-assisted tools, Solomon emphasizes the importance of personal development and mindset-focused materials early in a business journey, followed by tactical and scaling-oriented resources as the business grows. This reflects his belief in continuous learning to drive small business success. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Solomon Thimothy highlighted google.com as a powerful and versatile tool for growing a small business. He emphasized that advanced search techniques on Google can provide a wealth of information and solutions, often outperforming more specialized tools. Solomon described Google as "the original chat GPT," offering immense value for resourceful business owners without requiring additional subscriptions or tools. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Solomon Thimothy's advice to himself on day one of starting out in business would be to take more risks. He reflected on how fear and uncertainty in his early years held him back from taking on larger projects, despite their potential for monumental growth. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. Don't miss out on this opportunity to take your small business to new heights! Enjoyed the podcast? Episode 283 showcases our hosts Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal. In our final podcast of the year we launch a new mini-series called 'The Entrepreneurs'. These episodes will focus on pioneers in the business world. Our entrepreneurs will share their stories of success, failure, life-changing lessons and big decisions that they made. We'll showcase guests from all sorts of backgrounds to inspire our listeners. In Chapter 1 David shares his journey in aesthetics from the very beginning. From starting importing lasers from China with absolutely no experience, a chance opportunity led to him founding and managing the hugely successful 'Cosmos Clinic'. After another chance meeting at an event, he was then invited to become the General Manager of Laser Clinics Australia - now the world's biggest chain clinic with over 250 locations in numerous countries. These early successes led David and his partners to set their sights on the surgical world. They founded 'The Cosmetic Institute' (TCI) and within just 2 years they had disrupted the entire cosmetic surgery industry in Australia. At its peak TCI performed 100 breast surgeries a week and was turning over $40 million per year. But things came unstuck and David gives us a brutally honest account of what the root causes of this were and the most difficult period of his life. This experience changed his mindset completely and David offers his insights into best business practices, financial management, and the importance of risk mitigation. We end on a note about the importance of planning for financial stability and wealth management for the future. 00:00 Introduction and New Beginnings 01:09 Introducing 'The Entrepreneur Series' 03:51 The Topic of the Day: Business Failures and Lessons Learned 05:19 Early Career and Business Ventures 14:57 The Genesis of Cosmos Clinic 24:07 The Birth of Laser Clinics Australia 33:16 Reflecting on the Chain Clinic Model 35:06 The Genesis Of The Cosmetic Institute (TCI) 40:57 Recruitment and Training of Surgical Staff 43:02 Business Model and Initial Success 45:18 Challenges and Scrutiny 52:39 Major Complications and Media Attention 56:14 The Beginning of the End 01:01:53 Lessons Learned and Moving Forward 01:16:24 Advice for Aspiring Business Owners 01:21:46 Final Thoughts and Reflections CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR PATREON FOR ON DEMAND EDUCATION & SUPPORT CLICK HERE TO BROWSE OUR IA OFFERS FOR DISCOUNTS & SPECIALS CLICK HERE IF YOU'RE A BRAND OR COMPANY & WANT TO WORK WITH US CLICK HERE TO APPLY TO BE A GUEST ON OUR PODCAST JOIN OUR LISTENER WHATSAPP GROUP & SEND US YOUR COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS OR JUST SAY HI!
