This is a very special episode in that is constituted of a series of deep dives into several different subjects in which I have a rabid interest. Hopefully you do as well. If not, you're in for a long-ass listen. Unless you're new to the show, you know of my deep and abiding interest in all things David Lynch. So, it was a pleasant surprise when I learned of the book A Place Both Wonderful and Strange: The Extraordinary Untold History of Twin Peaks by Scott Meslow. Scott has written for such publications as GQ, New York and The Atlantic. And his book is far too in depth and accomplished to have been thrown together as a quickie cash-in following Mr. Lynch's passing. Quite, as it turns out, the contrary. Scott had pitched his book years before and was well into the writing of it at the time of his passing. And he talks about how the attitudes of his interview subjects changed from before and then after that event. And the book itself if great. You don't have to be a Twin Peaks nut to enjoy it, as it's also a story of how an idea becomes a show, what happens when that show, which was always greater than the sum of its parts becomes a cultural touchstone, etc. etc. etc., Scott Meslow, the author of A Place Both Wonderful and Strange: The Extraordinary Untold History of Twin Peaks is here. As of that weren't enough, Thom Shubilla, who has been here before to discuss his books Prime Time 1966 – 1967: The Study Of Television's First All Color Season, and James Bond And The Sixties Spy Craze. He is also one of the producers of the documentary Drew Friedman Vermeer Of The Borscht Belt, and has another in series of "I Know Dana Gould Will Buy It So That's One Sale Right There" books, King Kong Vs. Godzilla: The Most Colossal Conflict The Screen Has Ever Known. It's ostensibly about the making of the 1962 Toho Studios love letter to me known as King Kong Vs, Godzilla, but it's also just a fantastic story of show biz and deal making. It has everything: guys selling properties they think they have the rights to but don't, guys selling properties they know they don't have the rights to but selling them anyway, and yes… murder. True Tales From Weirdsville takes a deep dive into the life career and bizarre death of 1950's scream queen. She made some weird ass movies, Attack Of The Fifty Foot Woman, Attack of The Giant Leeches, but what she did on screen could not compare to what happened in real life and that is a promise. The late, lovely and talented Yvette Vickers. For details and links to my upcoming appearances, please go to the live shows page at DanaGould.com. And now, it's on, to our filthy business.
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Majora's Mask. We talk a bit about getting stuck, the structure, and do some extended catch-up on email. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up to Swamp Dungeon Issues covered: making it feel different, long-winded save mechanics, interrupting your play, expecting it to be okay to let the world end, the threatening moon, how games hold up, the usual strategy for reuse: more of the same, making the main mechanic out of a minor Ocarina mechanic, recontextualizing models and similar locations, the groom mask and the new interactions, constraining locations you can reach, the audio mix, being able to control for when certain events happen or not, being unclear on whether the water is poison, searching high and low for a bottle, a non-Nintendo moment, implying that the player could have been prepared, looking forward to more masks, reusing your engine, platform architecture converging, changing goals requiring changing programs, a podcast guidebook, Tim's annotated notes, finally having a list, recency bias, convergence of mechanics in AAA games, a story of a dev inspired by events and the podcast, asset flips, Majora's Mask inspiration. This week Sidey, Dan, and Cris fly solo — Simon's been called to Southampton on urgent business (he was spotted in a pub surrounded by tea cups, so make of that what you will). The dads are reviewing Ballad of a Small Player (2024), the new Netflix film from Edward Berger — the director behind All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave — starring a very much on-form Colin Farrell. The Film: Colin Farrell plays Lord Doyle, a dissolute British gambler drowning in debt in the casinos of Macau — and if you thought Vegas was the gambling capital of the world, think again. Doyle owes 352,000 Hong Kong dollars to the house, is blagging his way past the front desk in a crumpled cravat, and somehow still looks magnificent. He falls in with a mysterious young woman at the Baccarat tables, and from there the film slides into gorgeous, ambiguous territory — is she real? Is any of this? And does it even matter when the rush of the bet is the only thing that feels true? Themes of addiction, redemption, obsession, and the question of whether you can ever really stop — all wrapped in the stylised, sun-drenched visual language of Macau's casino underworld. The lads give it two words each: "All in" (Dan), "Bizarre but funny" (Cris), and "Strong recommend" (Sidey). Consensus: go watch it. Top Five: Gardens The boys dig into their favourite cinematic, televisual, musical, and gaming gardens. From the gnome in Amélie and David Lynch's suburban lawn horror in Blue Velvet, to the brutal communal fields of Midsommar, Spirited Away's otherworldly beauty, and the garden in Saltburn that had certain members of the pod seeing quite a lot of a particular actor. Wonka's chocolate garden gets a nod, as does Miss Peregrine's hedge-portal to another time. Sidey & Reegs are also going to see Wu-Tang Clan at the O2. Protect ya neck. Movies open a window into our collective soul. In Screen Captures: Film in the Age of Emergency (Lever Press, 2026), Stephen Lee Naish guides us through recent cinematic phenomena that reflect/refract our contemporary political existence. Stephen Lee Naish is a writer, independent researcher, and cultural critic. He is the author of several books on film, politics, music, and pop culture. He lives in Kingston, Ontario. He has appeared on the New Books Network three times for previous books: Create of Die: Essays on the Artistry of Dennis Hopper (2016), Deconstructing Dirty Dancing (2017), Riffs and Meaning (2018) From Star Wars-scope blockbusters and Hollywood coming-of-age comedies to independent horror productions, Naish draws out the ways these movies shape, and are shaped by, their audience's own dissatisfactions. In his discussion of the Star Wars franchise, Naish highlights a conflict between internet discussion-fueled fandom vs the Disney Empire that shares features with the ongoing rebellions depicted in the films themselves. A passionate fan base who can now voice their discontent via the internet is feeding back into the studio's agenda and criticizing the actions of characters within the film and the actors alike. Chapters on the super-heroes genre and disaster movies draw out the climate-based social tensions these reflect. Depictions of masculinity ("Men on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown") on screens large and small bleed into discussions of the work and presence of Nicholas Cage, David Lynch, and Dennis Hopper -- with a side-excursion into Valerie Solanas's strikingly prescient SCUM Manifesto. Stephen Lee Naish's Screen Captures adds a sharpening filter to the film-goer's experience on the big and little screen. Okay, Hobbitses, it's our last journey through Middle Earth! And Bilbo's first! Dom's back, and so is Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, and… Radagast the Brown?! Although this is our only episode on the Hobbit trilogy, we're not just covering UNEXPECTED JOURNEY this week. Listen in for some cross examination of the two (troubling) sequels, the many fan edits (especially the one from Maple Films), and Guillermo Del Toro's greatest unmade production. A very special thanks from Dom to all the listeners who reached out with support during his absence. And thanks to Stephen Hilger for pinch hitting! Digging once again into the depths of the Now We Know vault, originally recorded in September 2022, an examination of On The Air. July 1992. Mark Frost and David Lynch are a year removed from the cancellation of the landmark TV phenomenon Twin Peaks, and Lynch has just months prior screened Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me at Cannes, disparaged at the time, yet now considered a masterpiece. So, the dynamic duo decide to pair up on a new show, in a whole new direction: a hokey sitcom about a 1950's TV station starring Twin Peaks alums Ian Buchanan and Miguel Ferrer. Met with scathingly negative reviews, it was pulled after just seven episodes. Did it deserve it? Well, you'll just have to lis-oh, whatever, yes! Yes it did! It's awful!
To celebrate the life of visionary director David Lynch, we present to you a discussion of his masterpiece of uncanny parental anxiety, Eraserhead. We break down the making of and symbolism associated with this midnight movie classic. We also do a couple of impressions, read through every line of dialogue in the film, and even find the time to rank our favorite pieces of sound design. "The English have Shakespeare, the French have Molière, and the Russians have Dostoyevsky. What do we own? What do we have? The Western".A few weeks we lost a great and legendary actor who was also one of our top favourite actors. The great Robert Duvall passed away at the age of 95 on the 15th of February 2026. An actor regarded for his amazing versatility, immense range of performances, an actor who always strived for authenticity and realism. He could be big and theatrically booming but he could also be low-key and subtle. A terrific actor. He starred in many films. The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part 2, Network, Lonesome Dove, Tender Mercies, Jack Reacher, Days of Thunder, Falling Down, To Kill a Mockingbird, M*A*S*H and of course Apocalypse Now. One of the most dedicated and respected actors of his generation. We wanted to pay tribute to Duvall on this episode and hope we did a good job with that. Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. The film has been released digitally and also in select cinemas in the US and the UK. In Finland it was released on Apple TV after finishing its limited cinema run and was the Number 1 film for multiple weeks. You can read a review about it here on the Fangoria website. The film is now available to watch in the other Nordic territories like Sweden, Oslo and of course Denmark. If you live in Denmark, you can watch the movie here on Apple TV by clicking this link.Follow us on our Instagram page. For obvious reasons, we are no longer on Twitter. You won't find us there. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to guest, actor Christopher Murray on part two of our conversation about growing up the child of powerhouse actors Don Murray and Hope Lange. On part one last week, we discussed his parents career as well as his own. In addition we learned about his grandparents career in 'the business' as well. On this episode, we dig in to some truly cosmic connections. Such as? Well for starters, how many actors outside of Laura Dern could say that both parents and child were directed by David Lynch? Christopher tells us stories about his own life and how he ingratiated himself with co-star Sean Connery on the set of the film Just Cause, what it was like spending time on the set of the film Klute with Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland directed by his stepfather Alan J. Pakula & what it was like travelling with him as well. We also discuss backstage gossip from the film his parents worked on Bus Stop, travelling to Morocco and Italy with Pakula and much more. On this, our part two of our conversation with Christopher Murray, we really do get to hear some of the charmed life he has lead but also some of the truly shattering heartbreak as well. And through it all, Christopher never shied away from either the good or the bad. Our conversation was at times silly, at times crushing and other times wonderfully wholesome. This is a fun one and we are glad we had two episodes to tell Christopher's story. The Rarified Heir Podcast. Off we go!
In the latest instalment of The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey continue their epic 50th Anniversary Star Wars rewatch with the epic conclusion to the original trilogy, Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi.Fresh off the heels of The Empire Strikes Back's jaw-dropping revelation, our favourite rebels are back to take down the Empire once and for all.But this isn't just any rewatch. Corrina has brought her beloved Wicket backpack along for the ride, and she's ready to die on the hill that Return of the Jedi is the best Star Wars movie ever made. (Jamie strongly disagrees. He's entitled to be wrong.)In this action-packed episode, the duo dives deep into Jabba's palace (and its surprisingly moist inhabitants), the guerrilla warfare tactics of everyone's favourite space bears, and the emotional gut-punch of Vader's redemption arc. They also tackle the elephant in the room: those controversial special edition changes that added CGI singers, a very different Force ghost, and enough digital fluff to make purists weep. From Steadicam speeder bike trivia to David Lynch almost directing this thing, Jamie and Corrina leave no stone unturned. Plus, Corrina makes a compelling case for why Ewoks are actual geniuses, not just adorable fluffballs.Highlights Breakdown:

At the end of V: The Original Miniseries our heroes won a battle but the war rages on! The ragtag group of LA resistance fighters come up with a plan to turn public sentiment against the Visitors, but is it too risky? Is there too much Mike Donovan? Why are we shoehorning an unearned romance plot into this one? And will Willie and Harmony manage to get it on in a supply closet? Before that: The new GI Joe movie mishigoss. The death of Warner Bros. Fan edits of David Lynch's Dune. The first God of War pic makes Kratos look like he took a nut shot. And perhaps too much discussion of whether Kim Stanley Robinson wrote the Mars trilogy in the For All Mankind timeline. This week on Jumpscare! we're discussing Nadja from 1994, Nadja is a hypnotic dive into downtown noir—where vampires brood in black-and-white and love feels as cold as immortality. Directed by Michael Almereyda and produced by David Lynch, this indie gem blends art-house style with gothic romance in the shadows of New York City. With a haunting performance by Elina Löwensohn as the mysterious Nadja and an unforgettable cameo from Peter Fonda as Van Helsing, the film feels like a dream you're not sure you want to wake from. Moody. Minimalist. Mesmerizing. If you love vampire lore with an avant-garde edge, this cult classic belongs on your watchlist. We talk about the industrial body-horror of David Lynch's Eraserhead—a film that proves parenthood is terrifying and that radiators might secretly host musical numbers. Poor ol' Henry Spencer's world is a nightmare of hissing pipes, mysterious neighbors, crazy in-laws, and a sickly, dinosaur-headed baby.
You ready for some dreamy conversations about whether something is real or imagined, or whether this is literally happening or just a metaphor. Also Lesbians? Later, Jack reveals how he resurrected post-war New York City in the Lower East Side in MARTY SUPREME, and we discuss how he collaborated with cinematographer Darius Khondji (Season 1, Episode 135) on the film and strove for originality in its design. Jack also reflects on the evolution of his lifelong friendship with David Lynch from high school up until his death in 2025, and he shares how he overcame a number of obstacles while designing MULHOLLAND DRIVE. Plus, Jack recalls how he survived the "highway of death" in Costa Rica. Description This week we're skipping the blockbusters for the weird, wild, and mostly forgotten gems. Grab your neural implants and alien blasters as we explore the sci-fi movies that time almost left behind. From cyberpunk head-scratchers to B-movie alien invasions, we revisit the fascinating, flawed, and surprisingly ambitious sci-fi films that didn't quite make the Hall of Fame, but absolutely deserve another look. News Marvel Oreos - The Stuf of Legends has arrived with superhero-themed cookies. Millennium Falcon Pilot Chair - A detailed rolling chair replica inspired by Han Solo's cockpit seat is now available. The 'Burbs TV Series - A Peacock series inspired by the 1989 Tom Hanks classic quietly dropped all episodes. The Mummy 4 - Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return on May 19, 2028 for the next installment. During the Super Bowl, we got new looks at The Mandalorian and Grogu, Project Hail Mary, Super Mario Galaxy, Supergirl, Disclosure Day, and The Adventures of Cliff Booth. Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua has been diving into Reacher, where the towering former military policeman dispenses his own brand of justice with quiet intensity and very loud punches. Based on the Lee Child novels, the series delivers tightly constructed mysteries and satisfying payoffs that make it perfect comfort viewing for action fans. Jay is revisiting Twin Peaks Season 1, soaking in David Lynch's wonderfully strange blend of soap opera melodrama and unsettling mystery. Between cherry pie, coffee, and cryptic dream sequences, it's a masterclass in mood and quirky storytelling that still feels fresh decades later. Sci-Fi Saturdays - This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay looks at the forgotten sci-fi gem Colossal (2017). Gloria (Anne Hathaway), an out-of-work woman struggling with alcoholism, returns to her hometown only to discover she may somehow be connected to a giant monster attacking Seoul. It's a clever, genre-bending mix of kaiju chaos and personal drama, blending big sci-fi spectacle with intimate character study. Hathaway did a great job, and Jason Sudeikis plays against type in a role that's equal parts charming and unsettling. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Movies! The 1990s were packed with massive sci-fi blockbusters! But what about the ones that didn't dominate the multiplex? This week, Jay and Shua explore the fascinating middle tier of 90s science fiction: the cyber-thrillers, alien shootouts, dystopian futures, and existential thought experiments that lived just outside the spotlight. From cult classics to genuine box office swings, they discuss why some of these films faded from pop culture memory while others quietly built loyal fanbases. It's a nostalgic, lighthearted look at the ambition, weirdness, and undeniable creativity that made 90s sci-fi such a strange and wonderful era. Which animated character would you pick? Who would be a good mashup? Let us know! First person that emails me with the subject line, "What the world needs now, is love sweet love." will get a special mention on the show. Let us know.
