After a year of waiting, Formula One's worst-kept secret has been confirmed: Liam Lawson will finish the rest of this season driving for Racing Bulls. The 22-year-old has been locked in to drive for the subsidiary team of Red Bull at the expense of Australian Daniel Ricciardo for the final six races of the season, after which he's expected to secure the spot for the 2025 season. The move means Lawson will step into the Racing Bulls cockpit for Formula One's next Grand Prix in Austin, Texas on October 21 (NZT). He becomes the first New Zealander to secure a fulltime seat in Formula One since Brendon Hartley in 2018. In a world exclusive interview with Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking, Lawson said that it finally feels real. “Obviously I had, I knew about it for the last sort of... probably two weeks, but until it's out there to the world, it's, it obviously doesn't ever really feel set in stone.” “It's a very cool feeling.” Lawson told Hosking that he hasn't had time to celebrate yet, as the news has come in at a very challenging point. “Obviously, you know, all these guys have done three quarters of a season now, so I have to try and compete with that now, at tracks that I haven't done as well. So it's gonna be challenging.” “it's very, very special, but we don't have much time to, to really let it sink in,” he said. “We're getting straight to work.” LISTEN ABOVE OR WATCH BELOW See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Building on that discussion, they take a deeper dive into using the 10 cap formula to uncover a company's true value—debt included—and help investors make smarter decisions. On today's Redefiners episode, we talk with Natalie Robyn, the first ever CEO of the International Automobile Federation (or the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile or our French listeners). The FIA is the governing body for world motor sport, including Formula One, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and some of the world's most exciting motorsports races on and off the track. Natalie shares her leadership story, shifting from auto production at Volvo, Nissan, and DaimlerChrysler, to auto racing. She talks about how she and the FIA team manage the challenges and complexity involved in managing 24 races in 21 countries on five continents, working with a variety of stakeholders, local politics and regulations to make it all happen successfully and safely. Natalie talks about how the FIA parses through the more than three terabytes of data per Formula One car per race weekend to share data between competitions, which helps foster innovation and safety. All that data also helps inform sustainability as well, as Natalie outlines how the FIA plans to achieve their commitment to net zero emissions by 2030. We'll also hear from Dee Fitzgerald, a Managing Director in our Sydney office, who highlights how important it is for CEOs to have the right top team around them, and the five actions CEOs can take to maximize C-suite performance. Given how the crypto industry feels about fast cars and men with big personalities, it's perhaps no surprise that crypto is emerging as one of the biggest sponsors of Formula 1. Formula One racing is marketed as being all about competition that rewards instinct, speed, engineering innovation, and sheer adrenaline. Companies ranging from FTX to Crypto.com have spent millions of dollars on flashy deals.  Around 80% of F1 teams have at least one crypto partner. Crypto.com even has a $100 million deal with the Formula One Group itself.  But in this current market environment, how long can crypto firms keep splashing the cash? In this episode, Bloomberg senior editor Anna Irrera and Bloomberg crypto blogger Emily Nicolle discuss the future of crypto's fast car sponsorships.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rational Perspective
Bloemfontein teen racer Stuart White setting his sights on Formula 1

Rational Perspective

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 27, 2019 7:21

27 June 2019 by Linda van Tilburg In motorsport circles in South Africa, Stuart White has been called the Bloemfontein Bullet, White Lightning, even Baby Vettel or Stuwie. White is a 17 year old teenager from Bloemfontein who has been taken on by Sauber Motorsport earlier this year where so many great drivers like Kimi Raikkonen and Charles Leclerc started their Formula One careers.  Like many other Formula One legends, Lewis Hamilton comes to mind, Stuart started his career in go-karts. He is currently competing in the French Formula 4 Championships under the Sauber banner where we caught up with him. – Linda van Tilburg Stuart’s dad, David White used to race in South Africa and as a small boy he had the same passion. Stuart was only five or six when he started go-kart racing in 2006.  He went on to win several championships including at the age of 14, the title of Junior ROK Championship.  In 2016 he stepped up to the main circuit and started competing in single seaters.  Just three years later the offer came from Sauber Motorsport to be included in the company’s new junior team.   The CEO of Sauber Motorsport, Frederic Vasseur described Sauber as a promising young driver that has impressed with his determination and skills. Speaking from Brussels where Stuart was competing in the French Formula 4 championship, the teen described his inclusion at Sauber as the best thing that has happened in his career. White says it has been a difficult year so far because the level in the French championship was so high, but he was quite happy “to score three podiums.” White is currently third in the championship and said there was still "a lot of racing" left in the season and he was working hard towards preparing for the next race.  He says some talented drivers find it hard to progress to bigger leagues because it is difficult to secure a long term sponsorship deal which is needed to progress to the next level.  That is why the Sauber opportunity is such a big deal, as it gives him the opportunity to be part of a junior team that can take White to Formula One racing.    White says he is learning a lot from the Sauber team and even if it does not lead to Formula One racing, it opens up many other directions. Right now, the goal is “obviously” to get into Formula One and that is what he is working towards.  White eagerly takes everything he experiences on board to try to make that a reality.  The Formula One racer he looked up to most when he was younger was Sebastian Vettel, but since meeting Charles Leclerc who is in the Sauber team, Leclerc is now the Formula One racing driver that he aspires to be like.  The young racer welcomes the presence of young drivers like Dutch driver, Max Verstappen who are now getting opportunities in Formula One Racing, which shows Formula One teams whose drivers have been racing for them for a long time, that the younger drivers can hold their own even though they may be only 17 or 18.     His parents are used to the stress of watching their son racing at speeds of up to 230 kilometres per hour, but White says it does not mean that they experience less stress when he goes to a race weekend.  Stuart says they are aware that there is a lot of risk involved, but they support him 100 percent and without them he would not have been able to choose his dream career. His parents, David and Jeanne are his biggest supporters and push him every day to become a better driver. His sister, Andrea also raced go-karts for a while.  White is careful when asked what his dream driving team would be, saying that being part of the Sauber team and have the opportunity to progress in their team is a dream come true.  He wants to get into Formula One racing first and is not looking at what the ultimate team would be to drive for.    White was in Grey College in Bloemfontein, but left school to pursue his career and is now home schooled.  He plans to finish matric in 2019 depending on how taxing the racing season is, but if he can’t, he may postpone it to next year as it is difficult with the amount of travelling he does.  While most of his friends come from the racing world, he says he does catch up with his old school friends from time to time.  He does not feel he is missing out on anything by pursuing a racing career at such an early age.  For now,  it seems to be foot on the pedal as he tries to follow in the footsteps of Jodie Sheckter, the last South African Formula One racer. There has not been a driver from South  African in Formula One since 1980.  And as we switch to Afrikaans, he is from Bloemfontein after all, I get a very polite, “Dankie Tannie.” - Linda van Tilburg

What can one learn from a former professional race car driver about being more successful in business but more importantly living a more fulfilled life? Well (spoiler alert), I learned a helluva lot... Some of the amazing insights that I learned with my honorary guest are: why sales gets a bad reputation and how to CLOSE MORE DEALS for your business IN A WARM WAY, why it's so important to be able to step back and show gratitude for the many blessings that life has to offer, and how his dad was a rock solid foundation in his life through the thick and thin of his racing days but also his life. Also, we talk about how him being in the wrong place, wrong time nearly took away the opportunity to see his newborn daughter and how he started to live everyday with new-found passion and presence in every moment of life after this intense moment. Furthermore, we dive deep into him mentoring younger aspiring racers and the life lessons he teaches his mentees outside of learning not only how to win races on the track, but how to win the race of life! This was a very value-packed episode and a conversation that I truly enjoyed having... but, Dominate the Deal is just getting warmed up, and we're only going to keep improving every episode. That's why it's so important for you to leave a review on iTunes about my Dominate the Deal podcast, so that you get the best experience possible and spread the word to everybody about this ass-kicking podcast "Dominate the Deal."
