Lorenzo Fiori describes a "disaster" situation in Europe caused by severe drought and record heat, with water restrictions implemented in Swiss towns and critically low levels in northern Italy's Po River. The drought has turned the normally green Alps brown and disrupted lake navigation. Simultaneously, Sicily's Mount Etna has entered a prolonged eruption phase, spewing ash for seven days and forcing the cancellation of 700 flights at Catania airport during the peak tourist season. Fiori notes the chaos caused by tourists seeking "eruption selfies" in dangerous areas. For a cultural reprieve, he recommends the Bernina Express rail journey, which reaches the highest railway point in Europe. He also shares a traditional recipe for polenta with Gorgonzola cheese, paired with local Valtellina wine, though he expresses concern that the drought may soon impact milk production from Alpine cows. Beyond Politics: Should we take the heat out of the climate crisis?

Somewhere along the way, acting on a threat to all of humanity became a political act. Not a simple matter of science and economics, but a signal of whose side you are on.So, what would it take to change the political narrative around climate? This week, Christiana Figueres, Tom Rivett-Carnac and Paul Dickinson answer some difficult questions gathered for our live event at Bath Abbey, postponed when extreme heat made the venue unsafe - as if we needed another reminder of the urgency of this crisis. They ask: can we lift the climate out of party politics altogether? Does real leverage sit with the decisions made in national capitals, or is it only on the COP conference floor while the cameras are rolling? And if vested interests and lobbying can't be removed, how do we meet them head on, with an equal and opposite force. This episode tries to answer the challenge we all face: do we seek to depoliticise this crisis, or fight for it in the open? And, now that the climate crisis has become a political hot potato, can we change course in time?Learn More

Tariff Bingo: Trump vs the EU, China's Economic Fortress, and Europe's Rare Earth Problem

    Trade Splaining

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2026 33:34

Everyone weaponized trade policy at once this month, and the targets weren't always the obvious ones. Trump's latest tariff threats landed on the EU in retaliation for European fines on tech firms, which makes this a regulatory fight dressed up as a trade fight - and means every EU competition decision is now a potential tariff-triggering event. Add a threatened 100% tariff on generic drugs, and the low-cost end of the US supply chain starts looking fragile. Meanwhile the bill from the Iran war is arriving late but arriving. Strategic reserves are thinning, diesel and jet fuel are tight, and the Houthis are now vowing a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia, which puts the other oil export route in play alongside Hormuz. The New York Times Peter S. Goodman takes the diesel crisis all the way down to Bangladeshi smallholder farmers who need it to pump water, which is a useful corrective to the European trucking angle. Heat is doing macro damage too: Europe's grids were built for a different climate, and retrofitting Switzerland alone for cooling carries a price tag in the hundreds of billions of francs. Then there's China, which is quietly running the export control playbook it spent five years complaining about. Beijing is tightening controls on outbound investment by companies and citizens, Huawei has engineered its way around US export controls with chip stacking and other workarounds, and the emerging assessment is that China came through the trade war in better shape than most of us assumed. Ardian and Rob get into whether export controls actually do anything beyond forcing innovation, whether the "Chinese model is collapsing" story is analysis or politics, and what it means for an export machine if the rest of the world eventually can't afford to buy. Which leads to Europe. The EU is talking tougher on Chinese overcapacity and subsidies, but China can retaliate faster through rare earths and critical inputs. Brussels keeps signing rules-based agreements - Mercosur, Switzerland, the post-Brexit deal - covering tariffs, services, labour and environmental standards, digital rules and investment protection, while US deals go transactional and bilateral. The awkward part: Europe hasn't actually used any of those agreements against subsidized Chinese manufacturing yet. Plus: TS correspondent Michelle returns from six months inside the Walmart employees subreddit with a report on drone cages in the parking lot, stolen Zebra scanners, and Walmart's two podcasts. There's a global whey protein shortage, a Geneva perch bumper crop, a man who allegedly stole a Sea-Doo in Canada and livestreamed his illegal border crossing, and an Air Canada pilot who spent 17 years in the cockpit without a licence.

This week on Bringing the Heat With Trey Lyle, Caleb Barnes joins Lyle to focus on the biggest takeaways from the race at Iowa Speedway and talk the hottest topics of the week so far. One driver who has been a not-so-hot topic is Tyler Reddick, after a mistake took the No. 45 out of contention in the opening laps over the weekend. While Barnes believes the panic level is pretty high for the team, these next few races are key for Reddick to regroup and try to rebuild some confidence before the start of the Chase. With just three races left before the cutoff, Barnes and Lyle debate the drivers with the most to lose — or gain — when it comes to qualifying for the field of 16 drivers. That includes some concern about Shane van Gisbergen, along with some hope for some of the Ford drivers to use their short track speed to close on the cut line. Is Corey Heim vs. Carson Hocevar the Next Great NASCAR Rivalry? It might be a little too early to say yes. This week, fans found out that Corey Heim will not be eligible to compete for Rookie of the Year in 2027 due to a new regulation NASCAR is putting in place to determine who can qualify for the award. Barnes believes it's an unnecessary addition, while Lyle wonders if the Cup Series will even have anyone else available to run for 2027 Rookie of the Year. This week's news also brings a number of schedule announcements, including the return of the All Star Race to North Wilkesboro Speedway. While Barnes is sad to see the points race taken away, he thinks it's an opportunity to go to work on the short track package. Meanwhile, Lyle shares his excitement that the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series is returning to the historic venue in 2027. This week's soundbite comes from Christopher Bell, who reiterates some of his frustration with finishing in the runner-up spot yet again. Barnes and Lyle review if Bell could have handled the final run to the finish any differently at Iowa, and what the remainder of the season could look like if the No. 20 team does wind up breaking through to get to victory lane in the next few weeks. Extreme heat and drought are putting Europe's power system under pressure on close to an annual basis. Low river levels and high water temperatures are constraining nuclear and hydropower generation, just as demand for cooling rises. Meanwhile, solar has emerged as a bright spot — providing a quarter of the EU's power mix in June and helping meet increased daytime demand. In this episode of Plugged In, we look at how extreme weather is reshaping Europe's power markets, why countries overly reliant on one generation source may be particularly vulnerable, and what growing price volatility tells us about the need for storage and flexibility. We also ask whether Europe is prepared for a future in which today's extreme summers become increasingly commonplace; and what needs to happen now to make the power system more resilient.#Energy #PowerMarkets #ClimateChange #ExtremeWeather #EnergyTransition #Renewables #SolarPower #NuclearEnergy #EnergySecurity #Europe #Drought #PowerSystems #PluggedInPodcast Host: Richard Sverrisson – Editor-in-Chief, Montel NewsGuests:Maja Žuvela -  SEE Correspondent, Montel NewsDr Chris Rosslowe -  Senior Energy Analyst, Europe, EMBER Professor Mark Maslin - British climate scientist and Professor of Earth System Science, UCL Chiara Cagnazzo - Principal Scientific Officer at Copernicus Climate Change Service Editor: Alexandra CarlonProducer: Alexandra Carlon

The Green Elephant in the Room: Solutions To Restoring the Health of People and the Living Planett

SHOW NOTESFaced with a limit built into our own flesh, we did the most human thing imaginable: we invented our way around it. This episode is about the machine that makes cold on demand — one of the most genuinely useful things our species has ever built, and one that quietly runs up an enormous bill. We trace the whole arc: how air conditioning broke heat's ancient ceiling on where humans could live and work, the invisible refrigerants that leak out as greenhouse gases thousands of times stronger than carbon, and the grid that fails at the exact moment we need it most — because the same heat that spikes demand also makes the wires carry less. In Phoenix, most people who died indoors owned a working air conditioner; the barrier wasn't the machine, it was the electric bill. Then the turn: long before the machine, every hot civilization independently solved this — the clay pot that cools by evaporation, the courtyard, the windcatcher, the whitewashed wall that's secretly engineering. We threw away three thousand years of that knowledge in about fifty, and bought it back as a machine that makes the problem worse. The episode closes on the city itself — where a New York summer day runs ten manufactured degrees hotter than the land it was built on, where trees and white paint can claw back three or four of those degrees, and where every rule we wrote (heat for tenants, but not cooling; minimum classroom temperatures, but no maximum) assumed a climate that is quietly ceasing to exist. Everything we built assumed the Holocene would hold. It won't.Explore our Comprehensive Environmental Solutions database: A CALL TO ACT

This week, we bounce from questionable kindergarten teaching techniques and a tour through old movies to a pile of upcoming sci-fi and superhero projects. Then, in Future or Now, AI gives hurricane forecasters a potentially huge advantage, NASA pulls off another bit of engineering wizardry to keep Voyager 2 alive, and the cast of The Pitt boldly goes where plenty of actors have gone before. Real Life Steven is officially over summer. Heat, summer schedules, summer in general—it's time to move on. Meanwhile, Ben has been watching OLD MOVIES, including Kindergarten Cop. Ben calls it an "exceptional film," but watching Arnold Schwarzenegger take control of a classroom in 2026 raises some questions. How would Detective John Kimble's teaching methods stack up against modern school employee safety training? How many policies would he violate before lunch? And perhaps most unsettling: just how old are all those kindergarteners today? That sends us down the inevitable road of examining an old movie through the lens of people who now have entirely too much experience with how schools actually operate. Steven also has a pile of upcoming genre television and movie news to talk about. Neuromancer is headed to Apple TV, while Blade Runner 2099 is coming as a limited series on Prime Video. San Diego Comic-Con also brought news about Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3, along with more X-Men casting news involving Cyclops, Emma Frost, Beast, and Professor X. Trailer Links: Neuromancer: Watch on YouTube Blade Runner 2099: Watch on YouTube Devon has been doing some family movie watching, working through the Jumanji movies and eventually arriving at Zathura. Technically part of the larger Jumanji family, Zathura doesn't quite live up to its predecessor. It doesn't help that Dax Shepard's character has to exist in the shadow of Robin Williams, which leads to the assessment that Shepard comes across as "a block of wood" by comparison. Things get considerably darker with The Long Walk, based on Stephen King's novel originally published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym. Devon found the adaptation interesting and well done—but extremely bleak. That conversation somehow takes a detour through Time Runner before eventually landing on Hokum and its supernatural layer. Future or Now AI Gets Better at Predicting Hurricanes Ben brings us a potentially enormous development in weather forecasting. Google DeepMind's WeatherNext AI system has demonstrated an ability to improve hurricane forecasts, potentially giving forecasters and emergency planners an additional day of warning. The system predicts both storm tracks and intensity and can rapidly generate thousands of possible scenarios. During Hurricane Melissa, it reportedly identified major intensification earlier than conventional forecasting models. That's potentially life-saving extra time for communities preparing for a major storm. But there's an interesting wrinkle: like many sophisticated AI systems, exactly how the model reaches some of its conclusions isn't always clear to the scientists using it. That makes WeatherNext another fascinating example of AI producing useful results while simultaneously raising questions about how much we need to understand a system before we're comfortable relying on it. And despite the improvement in modeling, humans aren't leaving the process. Meteorologists still have to interpret the information, communicate uncertainty, and turn forecasts into useful warnings for the public. Read the Ars Technica report on DeepMind's hurricane forecasting breakthrough This Week in Space: Voyager's "Big Bang" Nearly half a century after leaving Earth, Voyager 2 is still going, and NASA engineers are once again finding creative ways to keep it alive. In an operation nicknamed the "Big Bang," engineers simultaneously shut down power-hungry hardware and transitioned to lower-power alternatives while carefully keeping the spacecraft warm enough to survive. Voyager's dwindling power supply has forced NASA to make increasingly difficult decisions about which systems can remain operational, making every additional bit of usable energy precious. It's another remarkable chapter in a mission launched in 1977 that is still returning scientific data from interstellar space. Read more about the Voyager 2 operation at ScienceDaily Explore NASA's Voyager mission And while we're talking about space, we check back in on New Asgard and ask the important question: is Devon still going to space? The Pitt Goes to Star Trek Finally, there's an unusual crossover coming for fans of The Pitt and Star Trek. Noah Wyle and members of The Pitt cast are participating in a Star Trek table read benefiting the Writers Guild Foundation. It's not a new Trek series and it's not some bizarre medical-drama crossover episode—but it is an opportunity to hear a completely different cast tackle Star Trek material while supporting the foundation's programs. Read more about The Pitt cast's Star Trek table read at TrekMovie   From aging action comedies to AI-powered hurricane forecasts and a spacecraft that refuses to die, this week is a reminder that the future has a funny way of colliding with the past. Join us next time for more science, sci-fi, and whatever unexpected detours we stumble into along the way.

When Should You Push? When Should You Back Off? | Christian Duguay (Valley Heat)

When does pushing for what you want become pushing too far? Jay sits down with comedian, writer, performer, and Valley Heat creator Christian Duguay for a conversation about boundaries, bad decisions, creative confidence, and knowing when to make the call and when to leave something alone. At the center of Valley Heat is Doug Duguay, a fictional character who keeps finding himself in increasingly ridiculous situations. He suspects his pool guy is dealing drugs. He worries about his wife's yoga instructor. He obsesses over a mysterious car parked outside his house. And somehow, almost every questionable decision Doug makes seems perfectly reasonable…at least to Doug. Christian admits there's more of himself in Doug than you might expect. That leads Jay and Christian into a bigger question: How do you know when you're being persistent and when you're just being pushy? Jay has always believed in making the phone call, asking for the opportunity, and fighting for what you want—even if that occasionally means annoying someone. Christian has traditionally been more cautious. He didn't even show Valley Heat to his manager until he'd made ten episodes and knew he believed in it.  But by the end of their conversation, the two find some common ground: sometimes the phone call you're afraid to make is exactly the one you should make. As Christian puts it, most of us have needed someone to give us advice, open a door, or push us in the right direction—and sometimes getting what you want requires having the nerve to ask.  They also talk about Christian's years at The Groundlings, abandoning stand-up, struggling with creative confidence, making music, building the bizarre world of Valley Heat, and why sometimes the best thing a creative person can do is make something they like and put it into the world. So where's the line? When should you push and when should you back off?
