Dr. James Noble is a BFD neurologist at Columbia in New York City. But as a college student in the 90's, Jamie Noble hung out at Lucy's Record Shop to feed the love of live music that's clearly part of his DNA. Jamie remembers a lot about Lucy's -  the bands he saw (Bugskull, Low, Blonde Redhead, Crop Circle Hoax, etc.), the 7” records he bought, the time everybody got kicked out and had to watch Doo Rag play their show on the sidewalk, and the one time he played a show there with his band, Lepus. Music and the arts have informed a lot of what Jamie does. He's been taping shows since 1998 and his recordings are housed at the University of Georgia in the archives of Henry Owings of Chunklet. With his colleague, Dr. Olajide Williams, he started what has become the Hip Hop Public Health fleet of programs, working closely with Sesame Street animators, producer Artie Green, and musicians like Doug E. Fresh, Easy A.D. of the Cold Crush Brothers, DMC, and Chuck D. He also founded a non-profit organization, Arts & Minds, which promotes well-being for dementia patients and their caregivers via art-centered, museum-based programs and experiences in upper Manhattan. As a neurologist, Dr.Noble specializes in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and has just released a book, “Navigating Life with Dementia” (part of the Brain & Life series, Oxford University Press/American Academy of Neurology). It's a joy to listen to Jamie talk about his time at Lucy's and his love of music. “The more we keep discovering, the more it keeps us alive and vibrant.” — Dianne A. Allen You cannot see, taste, or touch music. But you can hear it, and you can most certainly feel it. Music can help relieve the stress, burden and bring you to a more peaceful place. It keeps us alive and vibrant. In this week’s episode, we are joined by Rich Daniels. Part One of ‘Rich Daniels Advice on Precision and Vision’ Music was always a passion for Daniels as he realized at a very young age that it was possible to captivate an audience with a live performance while touching their hearts and minds in an indelible way.  Rich Daniels has been creating and conducting memorable musical concerts and events since 1974 when he began his professional journey as a high school freshman on the great south side of Chicago. He views the opportunity he has been given to have a career in music as a measure of service to others. “When music resonates with our hearts, it can heal and touch us in many ways.” – Dianne A. Allen  Rich is also traveling the country conducting regional orchestras (i.e., Baltimore Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, Richmond Philharmonic, Hartford Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, Nashville Symphony, etc.) for the estate of Jerry Garcia performing a “Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration” with legendary guitarist/vocalist Warren Haynes. Through the vehicle of The City Lights Orchestra, he has been given a chance to participate in thousands of programs nationwide for associations, corporations and non-profit organizations. Additionally, Rich and his colleagues have had the chance to take the stage and perform in concert with some of the greatest musical artists of the past half-century.  Wherever the need and whatever the medium, Daniels and his musicians have proven they are up to the task of making great music a part of every performance and assignment they have been given. Part Two of ‘Rich Daniels Advice on Precision and Vision’ Artists as diverse as Ray Charles, Mel Torme, Garth Brooks, Rosemary Clooney, Dionne Warwick, Burt Bacharach, Michael Buble, and David Foster have all relied upon the ability of Rich Daniels and his orchestra to collaborate with them to create their special brand of magic in performance.  In recent years Daniels has also been busy in the studio composing and producing recordings for a wide range of projects. As the television and film industry has once again discovered Chicago as a great place to work, Daniels was recently tapped to be the musical supervisor for three different television series and allowed to compose music for the pilot of the Emmy-award winning show “Boss” starring Kelsey Grammer and filmed in Chicago. “Music shouldn't be viewed as something that requires someone to be better than somebody else.” – Rich Daniels Rich and the orchestra were also featured in a concert on PBS this past Fall for the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans. These TV duties have also included being the on-camera music director for five seasons for the hit show on FOX, EMPIRE starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, and Jussie Smollett. Rich has recently music directed for Jussie & Terrence on a PBS concert filmed at the Lyric Opera House in Chicago and most recently with Jussie and Renee Fleming at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. with the National Symphony Orchestra.   Live music is meant to be a joyous experience that should entertain and inspire the listener while taking the audience on an emotional journey that allows them to be empowered by the spirit of this non-tangible entity. About Rich Daniels  Rich is most proud of the various charitable organizations his career has allowed him to serve and promote, especially The Mercy Home for Boys & Girls in Chicago (former board chairman), the DePaul University School of Music (current board chairman) and the Archdiocese Office of Human Dignity & Solidarity (chairman).  Rich was appointed by Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn to the board of the Illinois Arts Council in 2013. He is also the senior board member at the Chicago Federation of Musicians and a delegate to the Chicago Federation of Labor. Rich and his lovely wife Kathy have been married for 32 years and have 4 beautiful children: Rich (30), Mary Kate (29), Emily (26) and Maggie (24). Son Rich was recently married to Maggie Black in July of 2017! Rich Daniels knows that he’s a very lucky guy.  And that through hard work, perseverance and tenacity, together with a strong sense of faith, all things are possible.      JAZZ/POP ADDENDUM During the 1980’s and 1990’s Rich toured extensively with former Tonight Show drummer Ed Shaughnessy. Additionally, Rich also was asked by the estate of Woody Herman to take the band out in 1991 for several tours around the country.  During this same period of time, Rich played for or conducted for Louis Bellson, Ray Charles, Mel Torme, Buddy DeFranco, Phil Wilson and many “pop” personalities including Garth Brooks, Dennis DeYoung, Michael Buble and David Foster.  Rich was also a featured soloist with Laurel Masse’ both in concert and on several of her recordings.  BOARD AFFILIATIONS Former Chairman, Mercy Home for Boys & Girls (current member of the Board of Regents & Board of Directors). Chairman, DePaul University School of Music.  Chairman, Archdiocese Office for Human Dignity & Solidarity.  Board Member, Irish American Labor Council.  Board Member, Illinois Arts Council (Appointed by Governor Pat Quinn in 2013).  Senior Board Member, Chicago Federation of Musicians (elected position since 1992).  Delegate to the Chicago Federation of Labor.  Delegate to the American Federation of Musicians.  Leader Council Member, The Kennedy Forum.  The City Lights Foundation (Founder). Steve White Steve was given a small drum as a child by his uncle and upon joining his local Boys' Brigade he began to learn his craft. As with White's band mate Paul Weller, he was given full support from his parents who went out of their way to help their son develop. Steve spent his youth having lessons from the late George Scott of Wanstead and learning from recordings of Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson. He later took lessons with drumming teacher Bob Armstrong at Bob's Masterclass studio, then in Hornchurch, Essex. White complemented his work gigging with local bands with part-time work, spending any spare cash on updating his collection of jazz records. In 1983, White auditioned for an unnamed band which turned out to be Paul Weller's new group, The Style Council. Weller was impressed with the 17-year-old drummer's jazz background and asked White to come back the following day. White stayed with the band for some years but was never actually invited to join, even though he appeared in most of their videos and on all but a few recordings. He became the youngest drummer on stage at Live Aid at Wembley Stadium in 1985. He also performed at Live 8 with The Who at Hyde Park in 2005. The Who's regular drummer, Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr's son), had left to join Oasis on their tours and recording sessions. White left The Style Council in 1989 to pursue other projects and went on to play with many well known acts, such as Ian Dury, The James Taylor Quartet, The Redskins and the Jazz Renegades. When The Style Council reformed for a one off gig for Japanese TV in 1990, Paul Weller invited Steve to his studio to hear a few demo tracks. He was soon back full-time behind the kit for Weller's solo projects. Keyboard veteran Andrew Colyer has secured possibly one of the most difficult gigs today – covering keyboard parts made legendary by Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Jordan Rudess and Tony Banks! Andrew will be performing with 3.2 featuring Robert Berry this coming spring! If anyone is qualified for the position, it's Andrew who has performed and collaborated with the likes of Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson), Jon Anderson (YES), The Tubes, Sound of Contact featuring Simon Collins, Ryche Chlanda (Fireballet, Renaissance), Max Flyer (CBS Records), Clark Terry, Louis Bellson among others....not to mention his own band, Prog-award-nominated Circuline!   Keith Emerson left a legacy of music. From his beginnings with The Nice in the 1960's, to worldwide fame with Emerson Lake & Palmer in the 1970's, to his reinvention in the 1980's with the #9 Billboard hit “Talkin' Bout” in the band “3” with Robert Berry and Carl Palmer, Emerson's name is one almost everyone has heard of.

Jonathan Moffett, also known as Sugarfoot, is a drumming legend and is well known as being the drummer for Michael Jackson for over 30 years. He has also performed with Madonna, Sir Elton John, George Michael, Stevie Wonder, and many other iconic artists. Moffett was born and raised in New Orleans and began his drumming career when his father asked him and his brothers if they wanted to start playing music. Jonathan was assigned to play the drums after everyone wanted to play guitar and his father said “you can’t all play guitar.” This path however did not turn out bad for Jonathan at all, becoming one of the most iconic drummers in history. He began touring with The Jacksons after moving to LA from New Orleans in the late 1970s. In this episode Jonathan shares his amazing story of how he got the gig and came to play with Michael Jackson for over 30 years. Jonathan was the last drummer to audition with the Jacksons, impressing the group by playing “Shake Your Body” on the drums all by himself, a song with a three part overdub, which means it has three drum parts layered on top of one another with three separate passes of recorded individual drums parts. Jonathan also plays a number of instruments and is both a songwriter and producer. He has influenced drummers all over the world with his groundbreaking drum techniques and style. He is notorious for his kung-fu inspired signature moves which he came up with during a marathon practice session late one evening - the "one-handed cymbal catch" and his backlash-whiplash cymbal crashes (single and/or double hand) where he places two cymbals behind him and hits them without looking. The Sugarfoot sound is unique, fusing the feel of funk and R&B with the power of rock. He is also known for his impressive drum setups often using multiple kick drums and toms, and an array of cymbals rigged on a complex web of stands and hardware. Some of Moffett’s drumming influences include Zigaboo, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, among many others. Change Your Story, Change Your Life

JAZZ IS LIFE Jazz is not a mainstream art form. Jazz musicians practice for thousands of hours honing their craft. When they improvise, it is the dance between the heart and the mind that creates the magic. A strong foundation is essential, and that is built by mental skills sharpened by diligent practice. Today’s guest is Pat LaBarbera, an internationally known jazz giant. According to Elvin Jones,  “Pat has tremendous musical ability beyond technical facility. He has great power of concentration to detail and is totally committed with body and soul.”  Pat LaBarbera’s life is music and what sweet music it is! Pat LaBarbera is a saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist, composer, and jazz educator. He is well-known for his solo work with the bands of Louis Bellson, Woody Herman, and the Buddy Rich Band. Pat has played on every major network television show including The Ed Sullivan Show and Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show several times. He has worked with the biggest entertainers in the business including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Chick Corea, Woody Shaw, and McCoy Tyner. He has performed and recorded consistently with Elvin Jones since 1975 and rejoined Elvin Jones’ ‘Time Machine’ in 2001. His album, Deep in a Dream, won the 2000 Juno Award for Best Mainstream Jazz Album. Listen to get a peek into the life of a jazz giant. You’ll be entertained and enriched by what you discover. Here are just a few stops on the journey: How Pat’s father influenced him into pursuing music Is Jazz considered as outsiders’ music? Jazz – for listening or for dancing? Music as a form of intense personal expression Was there racial division in jazz? Gaining respect in the jazz industry Toronto-based jazz musicians Teaching music and moving the music forward Are today’s jazz students different than before? Pat’s upcoming CD   QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE “Some people really listen to music for what’s going on harmonically, if there’s a meaning or message behind it. Other people just listen with their feet.” “You basically gain respect by performance.” “Teaching music is like having tentacles that are out there searching and giving you all the latest input on what’s going on and what’s current in the music scene.” “The most beneficial thing is trying to get together with guys and play.” “The interaction with other musician is the one thing that you can’t practice in a practice room.”   BOOKS IN THIS PODCAST (https://www.amazon.com/Mark-Twains-Own-Autobiography-Wisconsin/dp/0299234746) by Mark Twain (https://www.amazon.com/Raven-Edgar-Allan-Poe/dp/148257005X) by Edgar Allan Poe Stan Getz: A Life in Jazz (https://www.amazon.ca/Stan-Getz-Life-Donald-Maggin/dp/0688123155/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1533843494&sr=8-1&keywords=biography+of+stan+getz)  by Donald L Maggin   PAT’S FAVORITE QUOTE “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.” – Émile Coué   CONTACT PAT Pat LaBarBera on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pat.labarbera)   LINKS AND RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE Pat LaBarbera on Humber College (https://creativearts.humber.ca/faculty/pat-labarbera.html) Pat LaBarbera Biography and Discography (http://patlabarbera.jazzgiants.net/) Both Directions At Once: The Lost Album (https://www.amazon.com/Both-Directions-At-Once-Deluxe/dp/B07D51TY57) Audible (http://audibletrial.com/storypower)

We're featuring an interview with bassist Larry Gray on this week's episode.  Larry's multi-instrumental path has taken him through performance on guitar, flute, cello, and piano in addition to bass.  Larry is in high demand as a jazz bassist in Chicago, performing regularly for decades at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, and he teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Enjoy! About Larry Born on Chicago’s south side, Larry Gray is considered by many to be one of jazz music’s finest double bassists. His impressive versatility and uncommon musical curiosity keep him in demand as both a leader and sideman. Larry began his musical studies at the age of five when his father brought home an accordion and introduced him to his first teacher. Invigorated by this study, Larry added the guitar to his arsenal and studied piano seriously for many years thereafter. It was not until he was in his twenties that he decided to switch to the double bass. Larry went on to study classical music extensively, eventually adding the cello to his long list of loved instruments. His principal teachers were Joseph Guastafeste, longtime principal bassist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and cellist Karl Fruh, a highly regarded soloist and teacher. Under Mr. Fruh's guidance, he received bachelors and masters degrees in cello performance from the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University. Throughout his long and varied career, Larry has worked with numerous exceptional artists and jazz legends, including McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJohnette, Danilo Perez, Branford Marsalis, Benny Green, Freddy Cole, Benny Golson, Steve Turre, George Coleman, Lee Konitz, Bobby Hutcherson, Sonny Fortune, Ira Sullivan, Junior Mance, David "Fathead" Newman, Willie Pickens, Ann Hampton Callaway, Charles McPherson, Antonio Hart, Jackie McLean, Sonny Stitt, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Al Cohn, Randy Brecker, Nicholas Payton, Kurt Elling, Eric Alexander, Phil Woods, Jon Faddis, Roscoe Mitchell, Von Freeman, Wilbur Campbell, Eddie Harris, and Les McCann. In addition, he has collaborated with guitarists Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, and Tal Farlow, as well trumpeters Donald Byrd, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Tom Harrell, among others. Larry continues to tour extensively, performing at jazz festivals and clubs around the globe, including the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Havana Jazz Festival, Rio Sao Paulo Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, ECM Festival in Bielsko-Biala, Poland, the Poznan Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, the Montreaux Detroit Festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, Village Vanguard, Blue Note (New York and Tokyo), Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival, with such jazz luminaries as Marian McPartland, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, Frank Morgan, James Moody, Larry Coryell, Louis Bellson, Barry Harris, Dorothy Donegan, Monty Alexander, Frank Wess, Joe Williams, Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band, Kenny Drew Jr., and most recently, Ramsey Lewis. As a classical musician, Larry played several seasons with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, including a year as principal bass. He worked on many occasions with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under master conductors Erich Leinsdorf, Rafeal Kubelik, Carlo Maria Guilini, and Sir George Solti. He also was the featured double bassist with Lyric Opera for the world premiere of the opera Amistad. Larry is an arranger and composer whose work has been widely recognized as uniquely melodic and exceptionally refined. His discography includes 1,2, 3,..., on Chicago Sessions, the solo bass record, Gravity, One Look, and Solo + Quartet, all on Graywater Records, as well as the Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson collaborations Meant to Be and Simple Pleasures. He can also be heard on the Ramsey Lewis recordings Appassionata, Time Flies, and With One Voice, and the latest release, Songs From the Heart. Larry also arranged and produced the critically acclaimed CD, Django by Ferro. Furthermore, Larry has recorded with Chet Baker, Curtis Fuller, Ira Sullivan, Lin Halliday, Willie Pickens, Nicholas Payton, Randy Brecker, Bunky Green, Bob Moses, Irish flute-whistle virtuoso Laurence Nugent, pop sensations Linda Eder, Dennis DeYoung, and Peter Cetera, and songwriter Michael Smith, among others. In addition, Larry is a first-call studio musician, and his playing can be heard on many commercial radio and television jingles and studio projects as well as the PBS television series, Legends of Jazz, where he can be seen performing alongside Jim Hall, Benny Golson, Chris Potter, Phil Woods, David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Clark Terry, and Roy Hargrove. In addition, Larry's original composition for double bass and guitar, Five Movements, was commissioned and performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Ensemble at Symphony Center in Chicago. Most recently, Larry has composed two commissioned works for the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Tribute to the Bass Masters Suite was premiered at the Poznan Festival in Poland in 2008 to much acclaim. A second work, String Thing, was first presented in Chicago in October 2010 as part of the Jazz Institute of Chicago Jazz in Chicago series. Larry also completed a collaborative project with bassists Rufus Reid and Joseph Guastafeste that was premiered in March of 2011 in Chicago. Larry Gray is also a dedicated teacher and is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also served for many years on the faculties at DePaul University and Northern Illinois University. Active as a clinician at high school and colleges and festivals thought North America, he also coaches various instrumentalists in jazz techniques as well as music theory, sight-singing, and composition. Two of the finest and most innovative trumpeters in Jazz are on tap here. Roy "Little Jazz" Eldridge and John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie. Roy was the elder of the two and came up in the 30's during the "swing era". It had been said and it is a generalization with some merit that Roy is the link between Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. Dizzy Gillespie needs no introduction as he is one of the pioneers of Modern Jazz and one of the most brilliant and innovative trumpeters of any era. These two Jazz Masters are accompanied with skill and inspiration by Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass and Louis Bellson on drums so it doesn't get much better than that! The date was simply called "Roy and Diz" and was done in Los Angeles on October 29, 1954 and supervised and produced by the great Norman Granz.
