Donald Trump is pondering whether a UFC cage could become a permanent fixture on the South Lawn of the White House after a fight takes place there on his 80th birthday.  Today, Sally Jenkins from The Atlantic magazine on Trump's deep links to the mixed martial arts organisation.  We explore how bringing the sport's ‘savagery' to the seat of power in the US is all part of Trump's norm-breaking style and aggressive approach to politics. Editor's note: This episode includes the following description of UFC bouts; “you're watching crotch kicking, bare knuckle brawling, anything goes, squeezing the throat of an opponent.” However, the UFC website states it adopted the Unified Rules of MMA in November 2000, these include fouls for throat strikes and groin attacks. Fighters are also required to wear gloves. Featured:  Sally Jenkins, a staff writer at The Atlantic

There will be a variety of celebrations to honor America's two-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary this year. Much of it is to be expected: fireworks, red, white, and blue lights, even a military parade. But something else is happening, something that probably wouldn't occur if anyone other than Donald Trump were President. The Ultimate Fighting Championship, the premier league for mixed martial arts, is staging a fight at the White House. The U.F.C. was founded in 1993, and exploded in popularity after Dana White took over as president of the company, in 2001. He's also been friends with Donald Trump for a quarter century, and spoke on the President's behalf at all three Republican National Conventions where Trump was the nominee. He's stumped for him at rallies, and Trump even called him up to speak at his victory celebration on Election Night in 2024. David Remnick and White discuss his remarkable rise to prominence, and his relationship with the increasingly unpopular President. “He's not a racist,” White tells Remnick. “He's not a fascist. He loves this country. And if you're an American—race, religion, whatever it is—President Trump is on your team, that I guarantee you.” Further reading:  “Donald Trump's U.F.C. What happens when a world-ranked fighter and coach to champions realizes that his toughest battle isn't in the cage, but within his own soul? In this episode, we sit down with Lance Gibson Senior—a veteran of the UFC and mixed martial arts, actor, and founder of The Fearless Way. Lance shares his incredible journey from overcoming racism in Canada to becoming a pioneer in the early days of MMA. We dive deep into the "26-year legacy" of his son, Lance Gibson Jr., who mirrored his father's historic knockout victory exactly 26 years later to the month. Lance also opens up about his transformative healing journey in the jungles of Peru, where he traded the physical armor of a "protector" for spiritual clarity and purpose. Whether you are looking to master your own resilience or seeking a deeper understanding of the "spiritual fighter," this conversation offers a roadmap for leading with calm confidence and purpose. Key Takeaways: ·  Calm Confidence: True fearlessness is leading with clarity and purpose, reframing past hardships into the foundation of current strength. ·  The Power of Legacy: The "26-year mirror" knockout achieved by Lance's son underscores the deep impact of generational discipline and shared values. ·  Healing the Protector: Strong individuals must periodically "drop their armor" to process grief and fatigue; seeking spiritual maintenance is essential to avoid burnout. ·  Vibrational Focus: Maintaining peak performance requires guarding your environment and tuning out external noise or social media negativity. ·  Integrated Mastery: Elite physical performance and deep spiritual practice are not mutually exclusive; they are mutually reinforcing components of a "spiritual warrior. KPFA Theatre Critic Richard Wolinsky reviews “The Monsters” by Ngozi Anyanwu at Berkeley Rep's Peets Theatre through May 3, 2026. West Coast Premiere.           TEXT OF REVIEW: (minor differences between the text and the recorded review). Putting aside solo performances, the heart of the theatrical experience usually lies in the interaction between two characters, no matter the size of the cast. Obviously, several characters in plays can interact with each other at once, but the most intense scenes are usually one on on. When these interchanges work well, we talk about the chemistry between actors. When they don't, it becomes obvious. One actor is listening and responding, the other pretending, and the audience knows it. Here's the thing, though. None of it quite works the same way in film or TV. There are multiple takes, cross-cutting. Confrontations might even be recorded separately and put together in post-production. It feels real, but too often it isn't. Only in live theatre, happening in real time, can we see the the meeting in real time, in front of us. And that's the key to why The Monsters by Ngozi Anyanwu, now at Berkeley Rep's Peets Theatre through May 3rd works so well. Big is a fighter in the world of Mixed Martial Arts, which has grown into a major sports competition and combines various disciplines which can, at times, seem almost balletic. Lil, whose real name is Josephine, shows up after one of his bouts, and after some back and forth, reveals she's the younger half-sister he abandoned in his late teens to go out in the world and find himself. It's awkward. They'd been close when she was at the start of her middle childhood, and then he was gone. Gradually, he will now feel the pull of family, as will she. But it will take time, and effort on both their parts. This is a play about siblings, about the restrictions inherent upon black people growing up in mixed and broken families, with the physicality of the competition serving as metaphor for their growing relationship, as attitudes and situations shift between the two. The playwright herself, Ngozi Anyanwu plays Lil, spunky, irreverent, and Sullivan Jones more than matches her as Big, in both his physicality and his emotional truthfulness. Their interplay, their moments of quiet, of fun, of anger, and of confrontation, can only reach its apex in live theatre. The playwright notes that quote here are big political things happening in the world, I think the way to engage politically is by humanizing people, and that starts at home. I'm always trying to make sure people feel seen. In The Monsters, both through the play's script, through the direction of Tamilla Woodward, and through the often raw and honest acting, these characters and their need for connection is clearly and satisfyingly seen. The Monsters by Ngozi Anyanwu plays at Berkeley Rep's Peets Theatre through May 3rd. For more information you can go to Berkeley.org. I'm Richard Wolinsky on Bay Area Theatre for KPFA. Stewart Alsop interviews Tomas Yu, CEO and founder of Turn-On Financial Technologies, on this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast. They explore how Yu's company is revolutionizing the closed-loop payment ecosystem by creating a universal float system that allows gift card credits to be used across multiple merchants rather than being locked to a single business like Starbucks. The conversation covers the complexities of fintech regulation, the differences between open and closed loop payment systems, and Yu's unique background that combines Korean martial arts discipline with Mexican polo culture. They also dive into Yu's passion for polo, discussing the intimate relationship between rider and horse, the sport's elitist tendencies in different regions, and his efforts to build polo communities from El Paso to New Mexico. Turn-On Technologies is revolutionizing payment systems through behavioral finance by creating a decentralized "float" system. Unlike traditional gift cards that lock customers into single merchants like Starbucks, Turn-On allows universal credit that works across their entire merchant ecosystem. This addresses the massive gift card market where companies like Starbucks hold billions in customer funds that can only be used at their locations.2. The financial industry operates on an exclusionary "closed loop" versus "open loop" system that creates significant friction and fees. Closed loop systems keep money within specific ecosystems without conversion to cash, while open loop systems allow cash withdrawal but trigger heavy regulation. Every transaction through traditional payment processors like Stripe can cost merchants 3-8% in fees, representing a massive burden on businesses.3. Point-of-sale systems function as the financial bloodstream and credit scoring mechanism for businesses. These systems track all card transactions and serve as the primary data source for merchant lending decisions. The gap between POS records and bank deposits reveals cash transactions that businesses may not be reporting, making POS data crucial for assessing business creditworthiness and loan risk.4. Traditional FinTech professionals often miss obvious opportunities due to ego and institutional thinking. Yu encountered resistance from established FinTech experts who initially dismissed his gift card-focused approach, despite the trillion-dollar market size. The financial industry's complexity is sometimes artificially maintained to exclude outsiders rather than serve genuine regulatory purposes.5. The information age is creating a fundamental divide between curious, resourceful individuals and those stuck in credentialist systems. With AI and LLMs amplifying human capability, people who ask the right questions and maintain curiosity will become exponentially more effective. Meanwhile, those relying on traditional credentials without underlying curiosity will fall further behind, creating unprecedented economic and social divergence.6. Polo serves as a powerful business metaphor and relationship-building tool that mirrors modern entrepreneurial challenges. Like mixed martial arts evolved from testing individual disciplines, business success now requires being competent across multiple areas rather than excelling in just one specialty. The sport also creates unique networking opportunities and teaches valuable lessons about partnership between human and animal.7. International financial systems reveal how governments use complexity and capital controls to maintain power over citizens. Yu's observations about Argentina's financial restrictions and the prevalence of cash economies in Latin America illustrate how regulatory complexity often serves political rather than protective purposes, creating opportunities for alternative financial systems that provide genuine value to users.
