Deaf from the age of four Victoria was raised in a family who instilled a high value on educational achievement and a strong sense of social justice. Victoria gained a bachelor degree in New Zealand (without the support of sign language interpreters) followed by a Masters degree in the United States before returning to New Zealand in the late 1990's. Victoria's deaf identity began in her close relationship with her older deaf brother, both raised orally, and later flourished in the New Zealand Deaf community and the culture-affirming experience of attending a Deaf university (Gallaudet) in the United States. Victoria's first career was in psychology but she soon gravitated to human rights/disability rights work and moved into a series of strategic and policy roles across central government and NGOs. Victoria's life highlights include being the key government advisor on the development of the New Zealand Sign Language Act 2006; representing New Zealand disabled people's voices at the United Nations in Geneva in 2014; and receiving a Queen's Service Award for her services to the deaf and disabled communities in 2015. "Time to move": Mark Robinson unpacks resignation from NZ Rugby Outgoing New Zealand Rugby boss Mark Robinson believes he's leaving the game in a better place than he found it. He's confirmed he will leave the job at the end of the year, bringing to an end a six-year tenure that started just before the Covid-19 pandemic. Robinson says he's proud of what's been achieved during a turbulent period. He told Mike Hosking that the next six months are critical for their role both domestically and internationally, with both their involvement in the establishment of international calendars and competitions as well as the opportunity they have to reset the financial model for the New Zealand game. Robinson likes to think those would both be signed off by the end of the year, and that in conjunction with his family moving over to Australia, makes him feel it's time to move on. Several travel agencies have reported a significant hike in winter vacation tour bookings after schools and universities across China recently announced their winter holiday schedules. Industry insiders said domestic destinations with milder climates and overseas scenic spots are in intense competition to attract winter holiday travelers.多家旅行社表示，随着全国中小学和高校陆续公布寒假安排，冬季度假游预订量显著攀升。业内人士称，气候温和的国内目的地与海外景点正展开激烈竞争，争夺寒假游客资源。Since late November, primary and high schools nationwide, as well as universities, have been releasing their winter holiday plans, with vacation lengths ranging from 25 days to over 40 days.自11月下旬以来，全国中小学及高校陆续公布寒假安排，假期时长从25天到40多天不等。In Shanghai, for instance, primary and high school students will have 25 days off from Feb 2 to 27. His Critique of Pure Reason, “categorical imperative,” and conception of perpetual peace in the global order decisively influenced both intellectual history and twentieth-century politics, shaping everything from the German Constitution to the United Nations Charter. Renowned philosopher Marcus Willaschek explains why, three centuries after Kant's birth, his reflections on democracy, beauty, nature, morality, and the limits of human knowledge remain so profoundly relevant. Finally, he overcomes the traditional opposition between thought and action by putting theory at the service of practice. If you've listened to just about any health-forward podcast in the last ten years, you've no doubt heard of it. And, if you've been following this channel for a while you probably also know that last year I exposed the criminal past of the founder who founded the company after we fled New Zealand for running a real estate scam. A few months after that report came out Chris Ashenden stepped down from his role as CEO. I also heard through the grapevine that they lost $45 million in subscription revenue because of my report.Even so, AG1 continues to be one of the most prominent financial backers of grifty podcasters — from Andrew Huberman and Peter Attia to Rich Roll and Tim Ferris. They offer lucrative sponsorship opportunities to anyone who is willing to repeat their health claims with a straight face.Part of their pitch is that unlike other supplement powders, they have actual science backing them up. While my earlier report posited the idea that you can judge the character of a company by the character of its founder, many people wrote to me that all they really cared about was whether or not AG1 actually works. They wanted to hear the science.Last week Alexis Maxence Léveillé (who goes by NoBullshitPhysio in Instagram) reached out to me saying that he had a scoop about AG1's scientific integrity and asked me to collaborate. We have spent the last few days combing through scientific studies, interviewing scientists and talking with representatives over at AG1.And, I have to say, we sort of found a bombshell hidden in plain sight in their academic research.In the video above we examine AG1's claims up close and report that they knowingly use an active placebo called maltodextrin as the baseline to determine if AG1 actually works. It's true that many microbiome studies also have used maltodextrin in the past, research that they cite from 2022 proves that maltodextrin actually harms gut health. While they could have simply used inert water as a baseline, they specifically chose to use a placebo that would inherently make their supplement line look better.Even with their home-team advantage, the only published study on humans they have in their lineup actually showed no substantial difference between maltodextrin and AG1. In other words: despite claiming great things on their website, it was pretty much a wash.But wait, it gets even weirder.Once I reached out to AG1's PR team and their entire slate of scientists, the research page began to morph in real time. Alex shares his techniques for fishing nymphs in late fall and winter with us, and his techniques are a bit different than what most of us use, so you make pick up some tips for your own trout fishing wherever you live. And because he often fishes for migratory rainbows coming out of giant Lake Taupo, his techniques will play well with Great Lakes "steelhead". In the Fly Box this week, we have a host of interesting questions, including: What is the most buoyant natural material for dry flies? Does adding UV resin to dry flies affect their buoyancy?
