On this episode, George Kyriakis, Sr. Director Business Development and Partnerships at FreshBooks, talks about his experience in partnership-based business development over the last seven years, a time spent learning from both successes and failures. George emphasizes the importance of securing buy-in from executives for partnership strategies. His lessons in this area stem from past experiences, particularly when he faced resistance from an executive who didn't support his efforts in a previous role. George is a big believer in maintaining focus, and he gives an example of how he streamlined FreshBooks' payment partner list to improve leverage and collaboration. He's found that having too few or too many partners can be a problem, and maintaining two or three strategic partnerships is generally optimal. At one point, FreshBooks capitalized on an acquisition by a partner, demonstrating the importance of being agile and prepared to take advantage of unexpected events. Looking ahead, George considers complementary partnerships and combining efforts between partners for more substantial outcomes. He also weighs the opportunities and threats in the evolving landscape, including economic concerns and shifts in market demand. This marks the Centennial Episode of Ultimate Guide to Partnering with a unique podcast, celebrating 100 episodes with a spotlight on amazing friends and guests. I am beyond grateful for their generosity, their grace, and their willingness to help shape the dialogues on both what makes partnerships successful as well as how we can make a positive impact on our world. As I approached this 100th episode, I couldn’t help but reflect on how we got here and why.  It all started in the fall of 2016 when I left the tech giant and opened my heart to new possibilities and let forces – and wonderful friends like you – help shape what was next. There was the friend who turned me onto the podcast medium, which I became an immediate fan of. There was another friend that suggested that I do my own podcast on partnering. And it made me realize that there was a huge gap that I might be able to fill with my experience and expertise. You see, I knew from my nine years as General Manager of Partner Strategy at Microsoft, that partners often struggled to successfully navigate their work with the tech giants. There were a small handful of technology organizations that had the decoder ring and had gotten it right. But most were falling short. So I started the podcast to help the many thousands of partners in the Microsoft ecosystem better optimize for success and deliver during this time of intense technological transformation. From the beginning, I was incredibly blessed to have so many incredible friends and industry leaders as guests on the podcast. At times, there were doubts. Has this really been worth it? Spending dozens of hours each week to perfect the process and reach the audience who would most benefit from it? And just when I needed it, a third friend coached me about consistency. So I plodded along for 60 episodes, and learned so much along the way. And it wasn’t just about the principles of successful partnering; it was also the personal and professional journey – the grit, determination and resolve to overcome and to do and to be more. But after 60 episodes, I strayed from my path and put the podcast on the shelf to pursue what I thought would be the dream gig leading the alliance at a billion-dollar Microsoft partner. And in some ways, it was because it gave me new insight from a completely different perspective. When I relaunched the podcast in June of 2020 , I was convinced more than ever that partnerships could accelerate growth and be a catalyst for survival during this time. I now had experience from both sides: at Microsoft as a channel chief, and also as a partner to a tech giant. Not only did I know intuitively what was required to make partnerships successful for both parties, I had also seen firsthand why they often failed, and how culture, mindset, commitment and maniacal focus were pivotal to both success and failure. When I brought the podcast back last summer at the height of the pandemic, the country was in agony. And so I relaunched with a personal conviction – one that I've held in my heart and soul for some time – that we in the tech sector could and SHOULD be a force for good. That to manifest the change we wish to see in the world requires that we as leaders address deep-rooted issues in our society. What you have seen in the 40 episodes I’ve recorded over the last ten or so months is that the podcast is much, much more. Yes, this is the Ultimate Guide to Partnering where business leaders come to share the strategies, business principles and leadership required for successful partnerships. But more than just a podcast on partnering, it has become a forum for leaders to tell their stories about overcoming adversity, driving change in business and making a difference in our society and our world. So many incredible leaders, so many great stories, so much to learn from these trailblazers in the industry.  Now, here’s the hard part…how do I sum this up for you in one concise podcast epis...

In this episode, Laura Reeves chats with Good Dog's leadership team (Lauren McDevitt, Chief Experience Officer, Cat Matloub, Head of Partnerships, Community & Legal Affairs, and Monica DeBosscher, Head of Partner Strategy) about Good Dog's 2020 Campaign to End Online Puppy Scams. Cat gives some examples of the types of scams she has seen in the dog world. With COVID-19, the number of pet-related scams has increased significantly. And in a world full of scammers, Good Dog is on a mission to protect our breeders and puppy buyers, which means using tech expertise to eliminate these scams. The Good Dog team speaks about the challenges when it comes to holding both buyers and breeders responsible for their actions. This frequently happens in the payment stage of the transaction - where one party will back out of an agreed payment, leaving the other party helpless. This is heartbreaking - for the victim and for the puppy. Part of Good Dog's goal is to bring world-class technology and security to the dog world in the form a breeder-focused payment system. A system that won't punish breeders when they get scammed, but rather that will completely support the transaction. Good Dog wants to take away having to think about payment when dealing with something as precious as a dog. The more a breeder can focus on making a good match for their puppy, and less time worrying about money, the better the experience will be for everyone. Monica discusses why dealing with scams as a breeder can be so difficult (and sometimes impossible to challenge). That's why Good Dog stands behind every transaction. She gives a couple examples of how using payments through Good Dog has saved breeders thousands of dollars. Lauren talks about how payments through Good Dog is different from something like PayPal, and how it technically works to protect both breeders and buyers. It was a simple two-page PPTX – First page was all about the individual – likes, family, friends, hobbies, passions, etc.Second page had five key areas – current responsibilities, 2-3 strengths and opportunities aligned to our company’s core values, career aspirations and development plan and next steps.Sue used this with her teams in two ways – Because she had more exposure to initiatives across the organization, she was able to raise up a team member if they had a particular strength or passion to give them an opportunity to lead others and conversely, if it was a development opportunity that had been identified, she could pair them with someone else strong cross functionality as a way to learn. Rich was in our nation’s capital for Microsoft’s Inspire partner conference this week, and he’s got lots (and lots and lots…) to say about the sweeping changes Microsoft has made to its sales and partner organizations, not to mention the new Microsoft 365 software-as-a-service suite. And in case that’s not enough Microsoft chatter for you, you’ll also hear two top executives from cloud-based workflow automation vendor (and big-league Azure partner) Nintex provide an insider’s perspective on the importance of Microsoft’s new Azure partner co-sales initiative. There’s more too, including a look at a story from ChannelPro’s July issue in which Joshua Liberman, of solution provider Net Sciences Inc., provides a detailed, step-by-step recipe for building an on-premises private cloud like the one he constructed for a client, and a trip to Matt’s tech museum to see something called “DOS,” whatever that is, that resides on something called “floppy disks,” whatever those are. And yes, it's true: your hosts just like to pretend they're too young to remember that stuff.
