SIBO is usually described as “too much bacteria in the wrong place,” but what if it's really an overgrowth of emotional responsibility, guilt, and other people's chaos living in your gut? In this episode, Heather McKean explores the emotional and metaphysical blueprint behind SIBO—over-responsibility, self-punishment, delayed reactions, fear of change, and inherited family patterns. Through a client story and practical reflection questions, she shows how restrictive diets can often reinforce the very emotional architecture that created the problem in the first place. You'll learn how to begin releasing what was never yours to carry, rebuild trust with your body, and support true healing using the Mind Change method. Episode topics:

Subscribe to the video podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@LiveHolPlus/ Your gut is not just a digestion system, it is one of the most powerful control centers in your body. In this episode, Dr. Taz explains how the gut lining, bile, digestive enzymes, and microbiome all work together to shape your hormones, mood, weight, and inflammation. You will learn why gut health is still not standard of care in conventional medicine, how stress, toxins, sleep, and even popular GLP 1 drugs change the microbiome, and what that means for conditions like anxiety, depression, perimenopause, menopause, and stubborn belly fat.Dr. Taz shares: • Why ancient systems called the gut "ground zero" and modern research is finally catching up • The four pillars of gut health: gut lining, digestive enzymes and stomach acid, bile flow, and a diverse microbiome • How leaky gut, SIBO, candida, and low diversity bacteria drive inflammation, brain fog, rashes, and chronic symptoms • The gut brain axis and why up to 90 percent of serotonin and other neurotransmitters are made in the gut • How butyrate and beta glucuronidase affect estrogen recycling, perimenopause, and andropause, leading to estrogen dominance and hormone shifts • The links between microbiome balance, circadian rhythm, GLP 1 medications, and metabolic syndrome and weight gain • A practical step by step protocol using diet changes, collagen, glutamine, enzymes, probiotics, fermented foods, sleep, and stress tools to rebuild gut healthWhether you are dealing with mood changes, hormone chaos, weight that will not budge, or unexplained symptoms that never fully resolve, this episode gives you a clear roadmap to understand your gut and start rebuilding your microbiome from the inside out.Stay Connected:Connect further to Hol+ at https://holplus.co/- Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell to stay updated on future episodes of hol+.Follow Dr. Taz on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtazmd/https://www.instagram.com/liveholplus/Subscribe to the audio podcast: https://holplus.transistor.fm/subscribeSubscribe to the video podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@DrTazMD/podcastsGet your copy of The Hormone Shift: Balance Your Body and Thrive Through Midlife and MenopauseHost & Production TeamHost: Dr. Taz; Produced by ClipGrowth.com (Producer: Pat Gostek)

In this encore episode, we detail Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth (SIFO), with a focus on fungal biofilm formation and its role in promoting microbial persistence and evasion of host immune responses. We discuss the phenotypic plasticity of Candida species, as well as biofilm matrices adherent to the intestinal mucosa. We further highlight common symptoms of SIFO as well as the effects of hypochlorhydria, impaired motility, diminished commensal bacterial populations, and weakened mucosal immunity.Topics: 1. Introduction- Focus on the gut mucosal barrier.- Emphasis on Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth (SIFO) and biofilms.2. Intestinal Barrier Anatomy- The mucosa: epithelium, lamina propria, and a thin band of smooth muscle.- The epithelial layer.- Covered by protective mucus composed of mucin glycoproteins secreted by goblet cells.- In the small intestine: less dense mucus.3. Epithelial Integrity- Tight junctions.- Paracellular barrier preventing uncontrolled antigen passage.4. Lamina Propria5. Overview of Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth (SIFO)- SIFO involves fungal overgrowth in the small intestine, commonly Candida species.- Small intestines: Low microbial density due to motility, gastric acid, bile acids, immune surveillance, and more.- Contributing factors: hypochlorhydria, impaired motility, reduced digestive enzymes, diminished competitive flora, lowered immunity, and more.6. Candida Pathogenicity- Candida exhibits phenotypic plasticity: yeast and hyphal forms.- Biofilm formation.7. Biofilm Formation- Biofilms are structured communities of microbes within a self-produced extracellular matrix.- Resistance to antimicrobials and immune defenses.- Can develop on intestinal mucosa and in various other regions.8. SIFO and SIBO Overlap- Root causes and overlap between SIFO and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).- Common symptoms.9. Gastric Acid in More Detail- Stomach epithelium includes mucous, parietal, chief, and enteroendocrine cells- Parietal cells secrete hydrochloric acid.- HCl denatures proteins and aids in inhibiting pathogens.- Hypochlorhydria: possible causes. 10. Downstream Effects of Low Acid11. Gut Motility in More Detail- Motility involves rhythmic smooth muscle contractions.- Enteric nervous system (ENS): myenteric and submucosal plexuses.- Dysautonomia and motility.12. SIFO Contributing Factors13. Candida Regulation- Candida in unicellular yeast form under homeostatic regulation.- Controlled by microbial competition, host defenses, antifungal peptides, and more.14. Role of Mucus and sIgA- Mucosal immunity and Candida populations.- Low sIgA levels.15. Conclusion- Mucosal barrier structure.- SIFO and Candida.- Biofilm formation, microbial persistence, and mucosal disruption.- SIFO and SIBO.- Multifactorial nature of fungal dysbiosis, types of biofilms, and small intestinal overgrowth.Thank you to our episode sponsor: 1. Gut motility may be the most important and least discussed aspect of health. One vital part of gut motility is the Migrating Motor Complex. The Migrating Motor Complex (MMC) is the gut’s “street sweeper,” clearing food and bacteria to maintain intestinal homeostasis between meals. In this episode, we review its physiology, regulatory mechanisms, and clinical relevance – from SIBO to functional GI disorders – highlighting why this cyclical motility pattern matters for patient care. Today you’ll meet the migrating motor complex: your gut’s built-in street sweeper that clocks in when you’re not eating. This behind-the-scenes cleaning cycle is essential to GI health! Avoid these mistakes for a healthy gut! These 8 common gut health mistakes could be destroying your digestive health. Discover the habits and foods that ruin gut health, along with my expert gut health tips to improve your digestion and overall health today.1. Trying to improve gut health with fiberIncreasing fiber is one of the worst things you can do for your gut, yet it's commonly recommended. If your gut is damaged, fiber can exacerbate the issue, contributing to gas and inflammation. If you have gut inflammation, the carnivore diet can help! The carnivore diet helps increase glutamine, an amino acid that promotes gut healing. Zinc carnosine and butyrate, found in butter, are excellent for a healthy gut. Intermittent fasting and periodic prolonged fasting are crucial for maintaining digestive health.Approximately 40% of the population has SIBO. L. Reuteri can help reduce SIBO and has many other amazing benefits. It increases oxytocin, lowers stres, and even increases social capacity. Ensure you have strong stomach acid for healthy digestion and protection from microbes. 2. Commercial probiotics and yogurt The amount of probiotics in these products is so low that it won't make a difference in gut health. Many commercial yogurts are low-fat and contain added sugar and starch. 3. Colon cleansingThis eliminates beneficial gut bacteria, which can ultimately lead to constipation and other health issues. Avoid detoxing and focus on a healthy diet.4. Antibiotics Your gut microbiome does not fully recover after taking antibiotics. Bacteria that survive antibiotics can become antibiotic-resistant superbugs! If you have to take antibiotics take a good probiotic simultaneously.5. Antacids Acid reflux is a valve problem caused by low stomach acid. Weakening your stomach acid worsens the problem. Strong stomach acid is vital for digestion, protection against pathogens, and mineral absorption. 6. Low-fat diets Low-fat diets are bad for digestion because fat stimulates the gallbladder to release bile. Low bile leads to constipation and the inability to kill off microbes in the small intestine.7. Balanced diet Everything in moderation is the worst advice! Lowering carbs from 45% to 65% of your calories to 10% can significantly improve digestion.8. Superfood shakesSuperfood shakes and smoothies with kale, spinach, and fruit can overload the small intestine with fiber. Red meat is the best superfood! What up, Beasts. Welcome back to the show! In this episode, I talk with Jen Yundt Coles, a functional medicine health coach and SIBO specialist, about the deep connection between gut health, stress, and the high-achieving woman's drive to do it all. Jen shared how her own experiences, from running herself into burnout to surviving multiple life-altering wake-up calls, taught her that slowing down isn't failure, it's medicine. We explored why so many women sacrifice their own needs in the name of productivity, how unprocessed emotions and perfectionism can literally live in the gut, and what happens when you finally stop outsourcing your intuition and start listening to your body. This conversation is both raw and empowering, reminding us that healing isn't about hustling harder, it's about coming home to yourself. As always, I hope something lands with you today. I hope something you hear tugs at your heart strings and/or I hope you laugh.Bio: Jen Yundt Coles is a leading expert in gut-brain-performance and functional health strategy- best known for her premium programs helping high-performing women break free from the leadership drain of chronic gut dysfunction, including SIBO. Let's talk about that mysterious, relentless bloating that seems to appear (or worsen) as we step into midlife. If you feel like your jeans fit differently by the end of the day, or you're suddenly experiencing tummy troubles you never had before, you're not alone – and you're not imagining things. Hormonal shifts during perimenopause don't just mess with our moods or energy levels—they can have a huge impact on our gut. Our estrogen, progesterone, and even thyroid hormones all play critical roles in gut function. When those hormones start to fluctuate, the gut can become more sensitive, digestion can slow down, and inflammation levels can rise. Bloating is your body's way of asking for detective work. Maybe it's a case of poor transit time, low stomach acid, SIBO, or certain bacteria (hello methane or hydrogen sulfide producers!) making themselves at home. That's why it's so important to get personalized testing and work with someone who truly understands the microbiome—not one-size-fits-all protocols or quick fixes that can do more harm than good. In this episode: How Your Hormones Mess With Your Gut: Learn how shifts in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid can trigger bloating and impact digestion. Transit Time Matters: Find out why pooping daily isn't enough—you need to understand your transit time for true gut health. Thyroid's Surprising Role: Get the scoop on how sluggish thyroid function can slow things down and lead to major bloating (and exactly which labs to ask your doctor for!). Enzyme & Stomach Acid Secrets: Discover Tara's favorite enzyme supplement, plus the critical role of stomach acid (and how to spot signs of deficiency). Testing, Not Guessing: Why stool testing is THE gold standard for uncovering the real root of your bloating—and how to choose the right practitioner. Check out today's questions: Lorenzo: Hi Dr. C — We spoke briefly during the September 11th IHP live Q&A about Uterine Fibroids. I've been digging into whether progesterone-only birth control pills contribute to fibroid growth, but the research is all over the place—some say yes, some no, and some say it depends on if the person is taking Progesterone & Estrogen BC, as well as other individual factors. I've linked a few studies below and would love if you could do a deep dive on this to help demystify the topic. I always appreciate your unbiased take and how much your work has helped me and my clients! Thanks! I was wondering if you can do a show or comment on vagus nerve stimulation and what your thoughts are on it. I am current using one called Vagustim. I heard of another person using it and helped them with gut health. I have a very stressful job and I am trying to calm myself at night. The stress most likely has caused slow motility leading to SIBO. I think you mentioned you were going to do a podcast on this topic. Thank you. Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral, I had a colonoscopy done recently. Everything was fine except that they found 1 innocuous polyp (now excised) and a dark colored colon. Due to the color, they asked me if I take stimulant laxatives, which I do not with regularity. Ive probably taken 2 bottles of Senna in my life, so I dont think that would be the cause. I rarely take stim. laxatives due to dependance risks. I do take mag07 every day, which is oxygenated mag oxide to help with bio-availability. I wanted to ask if you would know what else might cause this darkening? Are there any health issues that could be the cause? Im 40 and have been diagnosed with functional dyspepsia and mild gastritis from an endoscopy. Thanks Jessica: Hi Dr. Cabral..I love my work as a hairstylist but I'm worried about my long-term exposure to chemicals. I don't want to give up my career but I also don't want to end up with chronic health issues from repeated exposure. What steps can I take on a regular basis to help reduce my risk and protect myself while continuing to work? Thank you so much! Ryan: I am a 48 year old man , used to be a high end athlete and still like to work out 3x a week so have muscle still but cannot lean out and have lots of fat too. I am 6'1 320 lbs but don't look overly fat. I am concerned for met healthy and organs with this heavy weight. I have Avery bad habit of waking up in middle of night and binge eating - thinking that's my problem but I am half asleep when I do it and have no control, how can I fix this ? Also if you have any healthy daily routines I would to hear them.
