The UN's Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in Geneva has expressed concern over continuing reports of racially motivated attacks on Maori, Pasifika and other ethnic and religious communities in New Zealand. Maori health leader Lady Tureiti Moxon spoke to Mihi Forbes.

Taken as a group, blood cancers are the fifth most common type of cancer in New Zealand - affecting around one in twenty people during their lifetime. But some patients are forced to seek help overseas because a treatment that could save them isn't available here. The Wellington based Malaghan Institute of Medical Research is working to change that. Winner of this year's Breakthrough Project category in the KiwiNet Awards, Malaghan is currently conducting phase two of its CAR-T cell therapy clinical trials. The therapy essentially uses the body's own immune system to target and kill cancer cells. Professor Robert Weinkove is the Clinical Director and he speaks to Mihi about the next major step in their push to make it a standard part of cancer care in New Zealand.

Critical public health roles - including in emergency management, pandemic preparedness and Maori health - are on the chopping block at the Ministry of Health, with yet another restructuring under way before Christmas. The Public Service Association says the loss of skills and expertise will leave New Zealand vulnerable, as the risk from disease and natural disasters continues to ramp up. Jawhar Aftabachi was enslaved as a child by the Ottomans in the Black Sea region in the early sixteenth century. He was then sold to the Ottoman admiral Selman Reis, who took him with his fleet to Egypt and Yemen during his wars with the Portuguese; carried, after the admiral's death, by the admiral's nephew Mustafa Bayram to Gujarat on the western coast of India; and finally, when the Mughal army invaded Gujarat in 1534, taken into imperial service along with thousands of Eurasian and Abyssinian slaves. Here he rose to the position of water-carrier for the Mughal Emperor Humayun and chronicled this experience in a remarkable , Persian text called Tazkirah-i Vaqi`at or “memoir of events”. A recent International Olympic Committee consensus statement found that between 44 per cent and 86 per cent of children experience interpersonal violence in sport environments this includes bullying, sexism, racism, homophobia, and sexual abuse. New research has raised questions about the current approaches to stopping abuse in children's sport and has highlighted the role local councils can play in problematic behaviour. Lead researcher from Melbourne's Monash University Dr Erik Denison has spent over a decade studying ways to stop discrimination and abuse in sport in Australia and New Zealand. He Joins Jesse.

Ayya Karunika started her monastic life in 2010 and she received her full ordination as a bhikkhunī in 2014 at Dhammasara Nuns monastery in Western Australia where she lived and trained for over a decade with Ajahn Hāsapaññā. She has been a student of Ajahn Brahm and Ajahn Brahmali for over 2 decades. Ayya Kārunikā is able to articulate the Buddhist teachings in a way that is practical and comprehensible to people of all ages and has experience in conducting retreats for both adults and youth. While she has a PhD in Microbiology and worked as a scientist, she has also been the building project manager for the construction of the Dhammasara Nuns Monastery main building complex and has worked with many volunteers over the years. Ayya Kārunikā was born in Sri Lanka but has been living and working in Australia for over 2 decades. She has a passion to share her experience and knowledge and loves working with people and also doing creative projects. A government decision to reject stronger climate targets is pitiful, and will cost households in the long run, scientists, advocates and opposition politicians say. The coalition today released its response to recommendations from the Climate Change Commission to strengthen New Zealand's 2050 targets for methane and carbon emissions. It rejected them both, saying adopting stronger targets would impact GDP - but critics say today's decision will cost the country far more dearly. Climate Change Correspondent Kate Newton reports.
