Occasionally, someone will ask me if I think they should invest in a movie. My answer is, invariably, the same: you should only invest in movies you really believe in; you should understand that even if you invest, the movie will likely never get made because most movies never do; and you should only invest if you're willing to lose everything you put in, because even those movies that do get made tend to show a loss.I lead with this because today I'm talking to Jeff Annison of Legion M, a production and distribution company built on the idea that fan investments are a great way to both develop seed capital and drive enthusiasm at theaters. Legion M is not a fly-by-night company and has a number of productions under its belt, including My Dead Friend Zoe and The Man in the White Van. Jeff will be the first to tell you that investing is risky and should only be done if you're comfortable with losing it all, though he obviously has staked his claim with Legion M and put no small amount of his own capital at risk. And they've certainly seen some successes with films like the Nic Cage-starring Mandy (one of my favorites of the 2010s).We discussed how changes to investment laws in 2016 helped spur a shift in indie fundraising from crowdfunding models to models that allow individuals to earn equity in the movies they contribute to the production of. We also discussed the Legion M Film Fund, their distribution-minded arm that provides last-in, first-out money for films seeking a domestic release. And we chatted about the effort to build a consistent fan base via the cultivation of retail investors.

Before getting there, Dave gives listeners a chaotic snapshot of life at home while Linda is away in Aruba—solo parenting, eating Ralph's ices, putting Susan to bed, cleaning the backyard with Heart Attack Doug, tossing an old rusted grill, and trying to make the house look better before Linda returns. Dave then reads a truly wild listener email from “Stan the Man from London,” describing a multi-day relapse involving forgotten luggage, shooting cocaine in a government facility bathroom, fleeing authorities, drinking in pubs, attending his first orgy, smoking meth, doing booty-bumped MDMA, watching bodies swing from the ceiling, and taking mystery LSD gummies to cope with the scene. His father ran the notorious behavior-modification program Elan, later the subject of the documentary The Last Stop. Jason describes his father as a brilliant but dangerous alcoholic/addict. His mother suffered from serious untreated mental illness and subjected Jason to horrifying physical abuse, bizarre religious episodes, and chaos throughout childhood. Jason says music became his escape. He first got serious about harmonica after seeing James Cotton perform live and witnessing the raw emotional power of blues music. Though he originally came from punk/skateboard culture and resisted blues, Cotton changed everything. Jason became obsessed with mastering the instrument and started getting mentored by older musicians. As a teenager he was kicked out of his house, became homeless, drifted through deadhead apartments and baseball dugouts, and eventually reconnected with his estranged father, who answered the door in a bathrobe with a gun and immediately asked if Jason knew how to roll a joint. Jason ended up briefly living near Elan, then moved to Boise, Idaho to study forestry before dropping out once music took over his life. In Boise he earned his stripes in a local blues scene where older musicians forced him to learn Little Walter songs before letting him play. He embraced LSD, weed, and beatnik philosophy, believing he was a spiritually advanced seeker while sharpening his craft. He then moved to Memphis to pursue blues seriously. That's where the Dopey really kicks in. Jason started using cocaine, then crack, and says smoking crack was one of the most instantly seductive experiences of his life. He recounts how quickly everything changed—money disappearing, priorities collapsing, and life spinning out of control. He also talks openly about his sexuality, his first gay experiences, and the confusion of navigating identity while falling deeper into addiction. The interview blends music obsession, childhood trauma, sexuality, homelessness, genius-level talent, and classic Dopey-level depravity. Jason comes off as both hilarious and heartbreakingly honest, while Dave nerds out over harmonica history and recognizes a fellow obsessive. TODAY'S DEVOTION: TODAY'S DEVOTION: The pathway to real transformation is seen here on this mountain. This story is about far more than Jesus' clothes being transformed, made dazzling white, whiter than snow. It's about you and me. It's about the world and all things being transformed. In this story, we are offered both a vision and a voice. The first thing we see is that Jesus—he's the final word. He's the one we're told to listen to, over and above all else. Not Elijah, not Moses, not the writings, not the Torah, not Peter, not me, not you. Peter witnesses this amazing moment—there he is, suddenly, Elijah and Moses are speaking with Jesus on the mountain. And Peter, out of fear or pride, or probably both, shouts out, Lord, it's good for us to be here. If you wish, I'll make three tabernacles here. One for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah. Peter thinks somehow he's going to have some final say here. And so we hear him say those words: I will make a tabernacle. Other translations render it, let us build, but "let us build" is not the final word. No, those words are often born out of fear and pride, but they will never be the final word. Individuals and kingdoms and churches are always offering this as the final word. Let us build, but fear which makes us cower and pride which puffs us up will all be subsumed in the end by God's voice, by God himself, the living Word. And we see that here—suddenly a cloud envelops them and a voice comes from the cloud. The voice they hear is the Father saying, this is my son that I love. Listen to him. At the sound of his voice, they're terrified. They fall face down to the ground. It's at this point that Jesus comes and touches them. Says, get up. Don't be afraid. When they look up, nobody is there but Jesus—Moses, Elijah, gone. Only Jesus remains. No more voices, no more conversations. Only Jesus, the one who is the final word. He's the one that remains. And he, the living Word, will envelop all of our fearful pride. His voice will break through all things, and he will make all things new. So let's hear the Father's voice on this mountain today. He's pointing us to his son. And not just on this mountain, but on a different mountain. This whole episode is pointing us to Calvary's mountain. And not just Peter, James, and John are being drawn to Calvary's mountain—no, he's drawing all of humanity there to himself. When the Son of Man is lifted up, he will draw all humanity to himself, that he might transform all things, including you and me. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I'll hear the Father well, that I'll see what Peter, James, and John saw—that Jesus is the final word. He is the living Word, and through him, he's making all things new. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. What does it mean to be bold? The dictionary defines the word bold as “a characteristic of confidence and courage.” I believe God is calling for you and me to live our faith out loud with confidence and courage. How else will the world around us know the difference Jesus has made in our lives?Main Points:1. Pastor and Author Craig Groeschel wrote, “Sometimes we function as ‘Christian Atheists.' We believe in God, we just live as though he does not exist.”2. We've been told by our culture that faith is a private matter, it's in appropriate and rude to share it with anyone else. This, of course, is Satan's strategy to intimidate believers into silence and ineffectiveness for Christ. If our enemy can cause us to be afraid of what others will think of us, we'll keep our voices quiet and our influence will be minimized.3. We cannot be ashamed, timid, or afraid. The gospel is the “good news” of Jesus Christ. God intends for us to live out our faith in a public way.
