P., Piato, A. Abstract: Epilepsy is a prevalent neurological disorder, affecting approximately 1 to 2% of the global population. The hallmark of epilepsy is the occurrence of epileptic seizures, which are characterized by predictable behavioral changes reflecting the underlying neural mechanisms of the disease. Unfortunately, around 30% of patients do not respond to the current available pharmacological treatments. Consequently, it is crucial to explore alternative therapeutic options for managing these seizures. Two potential candidates for attenuating seizures are N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC), as they have shown promising neuroprotective effects through the modulation of the neurotransmitter glutamate. Therefore, this study aims to assess the effects of varying concentrations (0.1, 1.0, and 10 mg/L) of NAC and ALC on acute PTZ-induced seizures in zebrafish, in both adult and larval stages. The evaluation of behavioral parameters such as seizure intensity and latency to the crisis can provide insights into the efficacy of these substances. However, our results indicate that both drugs at any of the tested concentrations were not able to reduce PTZ-induced epileptic seizures. On the other hand, the administration of diazepam demonstrated a notable reduction in seizure intensity and an increase in latencies to higher scores of epileptic seizures. Consequently, we conclude that, under the conditions employed in this study, NAC and ALC do not exhibit any significant effects on acute seizures in zebrafish. Copy rights belong to original authors. Dr. Lewis recently had the opportunity again to be a guest on The Survival Podcast with Jack Spirko. This is one of Dr. Lewis' favorite podcasts to speak on, and we would love for you to listen to it! They discussed the importance of nutrition tailored to each person's different needs, the keto diet, and what different supplements can do. Dr. Lewis also talked about what made him interested in natural health, and how his life has been shaped by the drive to learn more and be healthier. Nutrition and Supplements The food grown today is not as high in vitamins and minerals as it was twenty years ago. Supplements cannot offset a poor diet, but they are a great way to get in nutrients that are difficult to get enough of through diet alone. There is nothing that can completely offset the effects of a poor diet, which is why we recommend adopting a Keto or Paleo diet. However, you can still have vitamin and mineral deficiencies while following a clean diet. You may also have poor detoxification, impaired thyroid function, elevated liver enzymes, or another health problem you can only see on blood tests. This is why we run blood work on our patients to see what supplement regimen would work best for each person, because everyone's nutritional needs are different. In this podcast episode, Supplements for Healthy Living with Jack Spirko, Dr. Lewis discussed some specific supplements and how they work including BP Support, Acetyl L-Carnitine, Digestive Essentials, Nattokinase, Omega Supreme, D3 + K2 Ultra. He explained why it is better to take vitamin D and vitamin K together, why not all fish oil is the same and why some fish oil should be avoided, and much more. Is Saturated Fat Bad? Many people have heard that saturated fat is bad for you, with some saying it's the worst kind of fat, but this is not true. This persistent myth has made many people afraid to try high-fat diets like Keto, and has caused many to consume too little fat which comes with its own set of risks. There have been many studies conducted on the connection between heart disease and saturated fat intake, and they have actually found that good saturated fat - like the kind that comes from coconut oil and olive oil - may even protect the heart in some ways. Good fats also benefit hormone levels because fat is needed to synthezise hormones. However, there are still bad fats, things like trans fat and vegetable oils should not be consumed. Dietary fat should come from wild-caught fish, avocadoes, olive oil, coconut oil, and nuts and seeds. Red meat should be grass-fed and consumed in moderation, and farmed and imported seafood should be avoided. Having a clean diet is crucial to overall health, and taking supplements cannot offset a poor diet. You should focus on eating organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed and pasture-raised meats, healthy fats like those found in coconut oil and olive oil, and doing light to moderate exercise at least three times a week. Beginning a supplement regimen tailored to your specific needs is a great way to ensure you're getting the nutrition you may not be getting from your diet. All the different diet and health recommendations can get confusing, but a good way to sift through it all is to stay as natural as possible with your diet and lifestyle. Here's two:Glutamine Glutamine not only helps with carvings but is also essential in recovery from workouts. Its definitely a must have if you are training hard, under stress and have carb cravings! How does it help control carb cravings? It actually works more through your mind and brain than stomach!Glutamine is used as an energy source by your brain. It can helps by eliminate obsessive thoughts about food, and lower your desire for carbs when you're in a bad mood. Glutamine has a calming effect especially in compulsive personality types. It's often used for addiction treatment. But remember, there are many other benefits of Glutamine than just these!How much is needed? Of course, the right dose depends on your body and history, but, usually 1 to 2 grams of glutamine in water before meals can help reduce carb intake. If you tend to crave sweets all the time, try mixing 2 to 10 grams of glutamine with coconut oil or heavy cream to combat temptation.Acetyl-L-CarnitineCarnitine is often used to help with weight loss because Low carnitine levels can effect your ability to burn fat. Ike glutamine, Carnitine is an amino acid. Its main function is to transport fats into the cells to be used for energy in your body. You can see that with low carnitine levels, you'll be slow to burn fat and your energy levels will drop. Yes, you can get carnitine from foods. But you may have to supplement depending on how much carnitine rich foods you consume each day. For example: Beef has the highest content of carnitine—4-ounces of ground beef supplies about 90 mg. A cup of whole milk supplies 8 mg of carnitine, and chicken and fish provide even less.Most likely you'll need to add 500 to 2,000 mg/day, in a supplement form.Keep in mind that these supplements have many other benefits beyond what is discussed here. Be sure to do some of your own research and/or talk with your doctor before adding new supplements to your dietTRAININGThree exercises that are a waste of time.... and you're probably still doing! Chances are, you've done (or still do) some of the exercises. And have heard me talk about them before! It's time to STOP, just stop doing these!DON'T SO IT!  Inner/Outer Thigh Machines ie the Abduction/Adduction Machines: In the case of injury rehab, muscular imbalance and a few other issues, this machine can be helpful. But as a method to lose weight and tone the legs, forget it!Women seem to gravitate towards these machines, to work their trouble thigh areas. I've said it a million times before YOU CANNOT SPOT REDUCE!  You cannot eliminate fat from a targeted area of the bodyIn addition to not reducing the fat on your thighs, this exercise is considered an "isolation movement," making it even less effective for weight loss.  Working small bodyparts doesn't expend as much energy or calories as larger ones. In other words, less calorie burn and minimal impact on your metabolism = no results!Stick to compound movements (such as squats and lunges) if you want to improve your legs. Rather than using phrases like “I think I’ll work on this” or “I really should stop procrastinating,” use positive, present tense sentences such as, “I get things done!” “I have a Do It Now habit!” Step 2: Write your phrase on paper!! Physically writing words has a powerful effect on your brain! Make and write down a deadline, it can be a goal time frame at least. Also write down a plan to create this your habit that is replacing the former “bad” habit. Step 3: Commit to repeating these phrases and focusing on this plan for 30 days. Remember, 21-days to form a habit. (link to retrain the brain product) It takes at least 21- 30 days of focused energy, to keep on track, but after that, it should be much easier to maintain your new habit. Step 4: Make a public commitment. Tell your family, friends, post it at work and at home, the more places the better! You will be motivated to stay on track if you know others expect your new habit! Monitor and track your progress. Before you begin your plan, become aware of your current habits. Awareness is half the battle! You can’t change if you are not aware what is happening. Habits are things we do automatically.For example, instead of working on a report, you may check your email and then move to your favorite blog, and before you know it you are completely off track! Become aware of these habits monitor yourself. How do you do this? Just keep a piece of paper or small notebook and when you get the urge to slip into a bad habit, record it! You'll then be able to see your patterns and make changes. Practice-but not any practice- it must be PERFECT practice. Practice doesn't make perfect....PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! You can practice the same thing repeatedly, and if you are doing it wrong you won't magically begin doing it right! Repetition creates the habit! Practice your “Do It Now” habit, daily for 21-30 days. You'll probably slip up a few times, so don't beat yourself up! Just get back on track asap.Extra tips:Track your progress. Just like your workouts or your meals, keep track of your efforts! Use a calendar and rate your daily accomplishments. Use a 1-5 or 1-10 to evaluate each day. When you can track your progress, you'll be motivated to continue. Put the words “DO IT NOW” wherever you can: your bathroom, bedroom, mirror, work any place you can!  Once you are aware of your “bad” habit, make a plan to beat it! Be prepared for obstacles and have a plan to overcome them! Acetyl L-Carnitine is a supplement or amino acid that your body produces naturally, though has some phenomenal benefits to the human body. RACETAMS - Class of drugs that are legal in EU and Canada, but yet not in the United States. Discovered in the 1960s and have been clinically studied since the 1970s. Much safer class of drug than Amphetamines, that posses very low toxicity and lack serious side effects. Scientist believe Racetams help with ATP synthesis and Acetylcholine function. Other studies show it improves mitochondrial function in Alzheimers patients. Aniracetam - Rob's favorite for creative professionals. Enters blood stream quickly and slightly stimulatory. Fat soluble, so need to have some fat with it (fish oil or whole milk). Helps with memory formation, learning ability, increased creativity, and holistic big picture thinking. Piracetam - The first discovered and the safest because of its oldest use profile. Claims it can increase word recall, focus, attention, and memory. Phenylpiracetam - Same as Piracetam but 10x stronger. Banned by the Olympic Doping agency. Does cause sleep disturbances so want to take this in the morning. Only take this 1-2 times a week because you will acclimate quickly. Seems to be good for attention switching and task switching as well as hand eye motor movement. Oxiracetam- The computer programmer or "hacker" drug. Great for neuroprotection and recovering from head trauma. Recommended for recovery from concussions. Enhances long term memory formation. Few studies that show it's better at memory formation and recall than Piracetam. One study showed increased reaction times, as well. AFANILS - Modafanil (aka Provigil or Modalert) and Adrafanil. Rob does not strong endorse. "Wakefulness Drugs" originally designed to treat narcolepsy that may help people avoid dips in energy, but do not increase focus, reading comprehension, or word recall in ADHD brains in same way stimulants would. Popularized by Bulletproof Coffee founder Dave Asprey. Inspiration for the film and television series, "Limitless". SUPPLEMENTS THAT ARE EFFECTIVE WHEN PAIRED WITH CAFFEINE... L-THEANINE - Exists naturally in Match Tea. Best taken with caffeine. Has calming effect, or anti-anxiety... makes caffeine or stimulant highs feel much smoother- rounds them out and relaxes the "jump out of your skin feelings". This is a coffee must have. Improves memory and learning. Aids in immune system, increases t-cells, has some antibacterial properties. Lowers blood pressure. Big Fan. TYROSINE - Dopamine precursor. Amino acid to refill your dopamine stores. Stress relieving properties as well. Great supplement for depressed people as well. Also have a super hectic or stressful work week... load up on tyrosine. VASOPRESSIN - Take and wait 30-45 minutes to increase recall at lectures or in other events where elevated recall would be important. CENTROPHENOXINE - Increase recall speed. This increases oxygen to the brain and helps with glucose uptake. Brain uses 20 percent of the body's oxygen levels so you gotta make sure oxygen flow to the brain is constant as we age. Suggested as a supplement to coffee (but with some bitter taste.) We all get an itchy scalp from time to time, but imagine a burning, painful sensation (similar to a sunburn on your scalp) that never goes away.We all get an itchy scalp from time to time, but imagine a burning, painful sensation (similar to a sunburn on your scalp) that never goes away.It's a condition referred to as burning scalp syndrome.Unfortunately, many doctors have a hard time diagnosing (and thus treating) the condition, leaving sufferers frustrated and at their wits' end. Symptoms include burning, itching, scalp sensitivity, pain when combing/brushing/styling, and may even result in hair loss.Causes of Burning Scalp SyndromeThe number-one cause of burning scalp syndrome is chronic stress, whether from daily stressors or anxiety, depression, and even recovering from an injury. A neuropeptide called Substance P is the culprit. Substance P is the key "first responder" to stresses in your life. When stress becomes chronic, Substance P builds up and becomes too excessive for your body to handle. Aside from burning scalp syndrome, other issues such as restless leg syndrome, digestive woes, vaginal discomfort, hives for no reason, and even conditions such as fibromyalgia can all be caused by excessive amounts of Substance P.Treatment OptionsAfter studying the syndrome, Dr. Ward Bond has come up with certain protocols to address it.Your diet is extremely important. In my response I recommend: - How To Heal Head Injuries As Fast As Possible Billy says:He was on a trail run when he tripped and hit his head on a rock and now he has a concussion. Do you have any advice on how to heal his head in time for a race in January? In my response I recommend the following for fixing blood flow issues to the brain and nerve damage from head injuries:On empty stomach in morning, mid-morning or mid-afternoon: -1000mg curcumin. -300mg Alpha Lipoic Acid. -20mg Resveratrol. -600mg Acetyl-L-Carnitine. -150mcg Huperzine-A. -15mg Vinpocetine. -120mg Gingko extract.Now this is a ton of stuff and bottles/capsules/powders.
