Ah, the holidays—a magical mix of family time, festive meals, and, let's be honest, a side of stress that could rival Black Friday crowds. Whether it's Aunt Linda's unsolicited parenting advice, a toddler meltdown mid-flight, or the anxiety of hosting Thanksgiving dinner for 15 people who all have *opinions* about stuffing, the season has a way of testing your nerves. In this episode, we're diving into three subtle, body-based techniques to help you regulate your nervous system without anyone noticing. Because let's face it - sometimes you need to calm down fast, and you can't exactly roll out a yoga mat in the middle of the airport. Here's what you'll learn:  Why body-based tools work better than “just think positive” when you're feeling triggered.  How to spot your somatic cues of dysregulation before you snap.  Three subtle techniques that you can use to stay grounded while keeping your cool.  Whether you're braving the grocery store lines, navigating tense family dynamics, or stuck in holiday traffic, these tools are your secret weapon for staying calm, collected, and ready to savor the season (even if someone burns the rolls). Marc kicks things off with “Hoodoo Voodoo Medicine Man” by Aerosmith—because what's a little hoodooing between friends? Finally, we wrap things up with Jerry's choice, “Trapped Under Ice” by Metallica. Man, we hope nobody is actually in a fridge while listening! For Kristen Wiig, stage fright is an asset. It's only when this feeling subsides—and a job or role feels comfortable—that she knows it's time to push her boundaries. This is what led her to leave The Groundlings, an L.A.-based comedy troupe, to join Saturday Night Live, where over seven seasons she established herself as one of the most celebrated cast members in its history. It also drove her to move from live television to film, which she did with a hilarious flourish in Bridesmaids. Her recent role on the Apple TV+ series Palm Royale proves the point that Wiig always rises to the occasion. On this week's episode of Table for Two, the actress, writer, and producer has lunch with host Bruce Bozzi and discusses her transition to the silver screen, the experience of working alongside Carol Burnett, and why Aunt Linda is one of her favorite S.N.L. characters.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stinker Madness - The Bad Movie Podcast

Planning on holding hostages over the holidays? Better think again, because Santa will straight mess you up in so, so, so many ways. In the late 70's and 80's there was a string of terrible "Christmas" movies that featured Santa or a Santa facsimile going on a murderous rampage (Santa's Slay, Santa Claws, Silent Night, Deadly Night 1-3, et al.). It could be an easy mistake to confuse this movie with that band of sellout cash grabs. Violent Night is far from any of those films. While it does pay a little homage to that group along with other Xmas classic films (Die Hard and Home Alone being the biggest and most obvious), Violent Night is a true Christmas movie. Ok, well maybe not one that you watch with the kiddies and bitchy old Aunt Linda (she hates everything anyways) but one that could easily become an annual tradition in the right circles. Think Machette Kills but with Santa going berserker (spoiler: see what I did there?) on a group of heisting baddies, with the true spirit of Christmas being found by the end of the ride. David Harbour's Santa is without a doubt the most likable Santa ever captured on film. All those other guys with their holly jolly that is without flaw and immune to the realities of the world (just gonna laugh and drink cocoa the rest of the year while millions die from disease and war, huh Santa? Jerk.) isn't what Harbour's Saint Nick is about. He's crushed by the way he's seen the world play out over the last century. He's tired of greed and people losing touch with caring for each other. He's a broken man and one whom audiences identify with. His disgruntling isn't just for laughs like cliché driven films are. There is a point to it all, just like everything else in this very well written film. The rest of the cast is also great with some top tier villainy and Grinchin' from John Leguizamo (Johnny Legs as he's affectionately monikered on Stinker Madness) and some real old rich bitching from Beverly D' Angelo. We can't say enough about Violent Night (our podcast took almost 2 hours because there's just so much to say) and we think its one of the best Christmas movies of all time (I'm serious). It shouldn't have worked and could have easily been a 2 star movie but the production group knew what they were doing (the minds that also brought us Nobody and Bullet Train) and didn't get sidetracked from the concept. Execution is at a 10 (in a few ways *wink*) and we don't see enough of that in film. Go see it. Thank us later. Actually thank the people who made this instead by seeing it twice.

Bonjour à tous et à toutes ! It has been a minute! This episode, set to air at the start of the summer, got waylaid. There was a Covid case or two, a trip to Hawaii, and shifting work schedules in the mix, but, at long last, it is our pleasure to introduce the work of our spring intern, Corra. We are so proud of all that they accomplished for the Putting History to Work internship in the spring; the depth of their research and the nuance of their insights will speak for themselves. This episode diverges a bit from our normal format: Corra, a young Franco and Lewiston native, explores her own family history and how it intersects with her queer identity. Using public records and the resources available at USM's Special Collections, Corra does a deep dive into researching the life of their late Aunt Linda, a family member with whom they had a deep connection. Their research culminated in a rich conversation at the WMPG studio about queer culture and identity with our producer, Julia, and one of USM's Instruction and Outreach Librarians, Megan MacGregor. Be sure to check out our blog to see photos of Linda and read more about Corra's story and where they did they research. We are still editing tape from our Mapping Franco Fort Kent and Brunswick trips, but because of schedule changes, the work is just going a bit slower than before. Not to worry though! New content is coming this fall and we are so excited to share our work with you. Merci, et très bonne écoute! This episode was written by Corra St. Pierre. We celebrate this day to remember the beautiful ancient traditions that Mary and Joseph followed. One of those traditions is Jesus' actual presentation in the Temple. In ancient times, babies had to be presented in the Temple as a way of formally introducing them to the world. And this happened 40 days after a baby was born. So, 40 days after he was born, Mary and Joseph took him to the Temple for his presentation! This story is so rich with tradition that I began to think about the different traditions we have. Traditions we have here at St. Martin's, traditions we have as people who live in Philadelphia (Go birds!), traditions we have in our own families. Because this day had such a beautiful story full of tradition and history, I'd like to share one of our family traditions with you. Every year on Christmas Eve, everyone in my dad's family piles into my Aunt Linda & Uncle Rob's home. The little ones wear red and green Christmas outfits, there's always a ham in the oven when you first walk in so it always smells really good, and my Aunt Linda has a biiiiiig bowl of her Christmas punch ready to share. Throughout the years, our party got bigger as our family got bigger. My aunt and uncle moved to a new home, and so did the party! Before my aunt and uncle took it over, my grandparents and their friends would have a Christmas Eve gathering! This party has been a tradition for our family for over 40 years. I love this tradition of gathering at Christmas because it makes me feel really connected to people in my family, even when I haven't seen them for a while. I am afforded opportunities to connect with my grandparents, even if they aren't here anymore, through our shared experience of this tradition. That is a really special thing to me. So when we look at our story again, we see traditions. We see Mary & Joseph connecting with their ancestors through these traditions, like I connect with my grandparents. But, they are also connecting to God through this sacred routine. And when we connect with God, we connect with people all over the world in different times and places. God provides us connection through things like traditions, or storytelling joyful people like Simeon the Prophet in the Temple. So I wonder, what traditions do you have? They don't have to be exclusively Christmas, but they can be. If you are a caregiver, think back to your own childhood. What traditions did you love? What traditions have you had to let go of over the years? If you are a child or a younger person, I wonder what traditions make you feel close to others? I wonder where you find those special connections, or special relationships, with people. And to everybody watching, virtually or in person, I wonder what traditions you can initiate or begin as a way to invite God's Light into your lives? Friends, thank you for letting me share one of my most beloved traditions with all of you. It has been a joy and I hope you'll think a lot about tradition and how you can connect to God in that special place this week. Worth It

We hear it all the time: “I feel like I’m not actually an adult because I have debt. And debt is bad!” Do you resonate with that? Well… we’re here to tell you a few things about debt that just might blow your freakin’ mind. Check out the fourth installment of our #Adulting 101 series about *drum roll please* debt repayment. How much should you be paying to debt? You’ll probably be surprised. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN 02:19 What people sacrifice for the sake of paying down debt 03:20Generational fear and hatred of debt 03:46 Dustin’s chart that “explains everything” 05:00 Why the truth is that not all debt is bad — and why not all debt should be treated equally. 07:42 Why you should treat interest rates like a game 08:26 The definition of interest  09:09 The good, the bad, the ugly debt 10:56 At what percentage you should start focusing your debt repayment 11:26 What Dustin thinks is “horrifying” 12:58 How much should we be paying off our debt? 13:29 How to shift your savings goals around to pay off high interest debt 14:10 Why debt should be viewed as a tool that gives you leverage 16:29 How paying down debt can actually risk your long-term wealth 17:40 Why you may be risking stability in a recession IT’S NOT THE 80’S ANYMORE, MOM Do you have parents, grandparents, or older family members/peers in your life who talk about “debt being dumb”? Maybe you’ve heard a shall-not-be-named “money guru” say that and thought, “Well crap, I must be dumb.” We take issue with this approach to debt. Why? Because it’s the not the same world anymore, and sometimes debt is kinda smart. Yeah, we said it. From the early 70s all the way up until the financial crisis in 2008, there was about 40 years of high interest rates. These interest rates were way higher than historical averages — and even what we’re looking with now. That means, if you’re a Millennial, your parents were maybe paying 14% interest on their mortgage. Insane right?! What’s even crazier is that today, we’re looking at the lowest interest rates in over 200 years. So, when we talk about debt “back then” and debt nowadays, we’re talking about apples and oranges. This means that owning a house with a 4% mortgage is wayyyyyy better than owning one like your parents did (and probably paid off) at 14%. This means that your car loan at 4 or 5% is wayyyyy more affordable than your dad’s old T-Bird. And you know what? The cost of college has increased 260% since 1980. So thanks, Aunt Linda, for the story about how you paid your way through college, but the reality is we need loans to get that same education. So, when we talk about debt, know that we (as in Dustin and Danielle) know that we’re actually talking about interest rates. And as Danielle puts it, interest rates are really just a game you gotta play.  HOW TO PLAY THE INTEREST GAME To put it simply, interest is the cost of acquiring money. How much does it cost to borrow the money you need? How much will it cost you to take out a loan to buy a house? How much does it cost to get money to pay for your education? And is the interest worth that cost to you? Really, that’s a good measurement of your need for debt. Do you want to pay 7% extra for that car… or would you be cool with paying 7% on a cheaper car that still gets you where you wanna go? And interest has another important role in your debt: it helps you decide which debt is “good,” “bad,” and “ugly.” THE GOOD, BAD, UGLY DEBT We’re not telling you to ignore your debt if you have, let’s say, a 0% interest rate on your new car or home furniture. What we are saying is that you shouldn’t push yourself to the brink to pay down debt that has a low interest rate. But yeah, sometimes we make mistakes and go into credit card debt over stupid crap like a new phone and some killer blue suede shoes. Those are the kinds of debt that we want to avoid — and pay off faster. Other times, things like predatory lending can get us in a bind and we may be paying 20-30% on things like cars, payday loans, and credit cards. So that leads us into the good, the bad, and the ugly — which we talk about in depth on Episode 60. But the gist is this: “Good” debt (and yes, we use that term loosely) include:  Mortgage Auto loan Student loan Business credit cards or loans (with good interest rates) These are used to improve your situation. “Bad” debt: Adjustable rate mortgage (you buy a house and the rate can be changed over time, sometimes ridiculously high) High interest student loans (that you’re just paying the minimums on) High interest car loans (this happens if you have bad or no credit) A good frame of reference for bad debt: anything higher than 5%. If that’s where you’re at with a loan, it might be good to buckle down and pay more. “Ugly” debt: Credit card debt Store credit debt Payday loans    “Ugly” debt usually is qualified by interest rates in the 20-30% range, and they require you to really do some work to get them paid down. Why? Because you’re paying up to a third more than you spent — that “cost” associated with the money is totally not worth it.  But, now that you know which debt you should be prioritizing, how much more should you be paying to your good/bad/ugly debt? HOW MUCH SHOULD WE BE PAYING TOWARDS DEBT? This doesn’t apply to every person, but a good rule of thumb is to spend about 5-15% of your income on debt. This includes your credit cards, your student loans, your car payment, etc. It does not include your mortgage, which is part of our housing episode (jump to Episode 81 here).  And, again, it depends on the interest rate! Are you at a smaller interest rate like 4%, or high percent like more than 17%? If you’re at 6% or higher, you should probably lean more towards the 15% of your income range going to debt repayment. But not at the cost of your savings! Remember your savings and investing. You should be saving (and giving) about 25% of your income but, if you have a lot of high interest debt, you might want to cut back on that investing if your interest is high. Then, once those higher interest debts are paid off, you can ramp up the savings and pay down the other lower interest rate debts over time. Why do we say this?   Because investing can net you 3-6% on average… which negates any sort of interest you’ll be spending on low interest debt.   How? Because as you compound interest on your savings and investments — meaning you grow your accounts because you’re getting paid interest into them — you continue to add more money, and get paid interest on those higher amounts. You’re making money on the money you’ve earned. It’s freakin’ magical. You know what’s not magical? Going broke to pay off low-interest debt. DEBT ISN’T YOUR RISK; IT’S THE FINANCIAL INSTITUTION’S We’d like to leave you with one last note: People think all debt is bad because it’s a financial “burden” that rests on them. But that’s not the truth. The party carrying the real burden are the banks that loan us the money. Essentially, you could never pay that money back (sure, you’d be screwed, but they’d be out the money), so they are the ones more at risk than you are. We hear this all the time when we see Facebook rants about how “China owns our debt!” What you need to understand is: we don’t have to pay back that debt right now. We have more money in our bank account because they (China or the banks) are holding that debt for us. This frees up more cash in our accounts to pay them back, but also still keep living. And there’s psychological value in knowing that we can pay things back over time — making it possible for us to do other things in life, like buy a house, have a baby, build a business, etc. We’re not saying don’t pay down your debt, or to only ever pay the minimums. But we are saying that you can do it at a pace that allows you to fill your other buckets.  DON’T PAY DOWN DEBT AT THE RISK OF YOUR OTHER NEEDS We’re just gonna say it: having an emergency fund so you don’t have to go into credit card debt in case of an emergency is much more important than just paying off your credit card right now. Being able to afford the roof over your head while also paying down your student loan debt is more important than going all in to pay down your debt — and losing your roof in the process. And building long-term wealth is more important than paying down “good debt” for the sake of saying you are debt-free. #JustSayin The biggest advantage of being young is that you can save so much, and therefore gain so much compound interest, that you can build vast amounts of wealth over time. But if you’re focused on paying back “good” low interest debt, you’re losing out on those prime saving years — and setting yourself up for more risk if something not-so-fun happens. So let’s reframe your debt: low-interest debt can give you power and leverage, rather than be a burden. It’s not 1985 anymore, so don’t let older generations tell you all debt is bad. Instead, lay out your debt, look at the interest rates, and figure out which debt gives you power and which debt is taking AWAY your power.    This material is for general information only and is not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual.   RESOURCES & PEOPLE MENTIONED Ep. 81: Adulting 101 Series: Housing: Episode 081 The Toujours Planning Quiz — Are we a good fit for your financial planning needs? I realize now that I was a bit giddy when I spoke with Sarah Bisignano about Bisignano's Italian Salad Dressing & Marinade for The Delicious Story. In short, I'm a fan. It is a delicious salad dressing thanks to its tangy flavor with just the right mix of other seasonings to create a festive and zippy salad. My husband David and I have been buying Bisignano's for years, of which my only lament had been the size of the bottle (a bit smaller than I'd like). But I paid a premium because it is just so good! Recently I spotted an article about Sarah and Bisignano's many dressings featured in a Des Moines Register article. She has rebranded the bottle (changed its size, too!) and is working with a distributor. The article had me wondering anew why I don't see any marketing for the dressing. It's in my local Hy-Vee, but there is no website and sparse internet content other than the recent article. I did find mention of Bisignano's by popular food blogger Iowa Girl Eats, and if she's talking about it you know the dressing is wonderful…but that's all you find.Given that this is The Delicious Story, I decided it was a journalistic imperative to get the backstory on the dressing—and, as fan, I also wanted to know more. It's sort of funny (and hopefully not creepy) as to how I got in touch with Sarah. With a quick Facebook search I discovered that we share the same hairdresser. I figured a message from a stranger would probably be ignored, and so asked our hairdresser to make an introduction. I think this roundabout way of contact only heightened the celebrity feel of talking with Sarah. She was generous (and I mean beyond generous) in sharing her time to tell the story of the dressing, her venture as a business owner, and touching stories of family for this episode of The Delicious Story. A LEGACY GIFTYou'll want to hear straight from Sarah about how this popular dressing was first created and came to be a beloved product for Des Moines residents, and later Iowans and beyond. The story has wonderful components including a family with strong traditions making for a significant cast that each became local personalities in the restaurant business. For one, there was Babe Bisignano, who owned the once hugely popular Babe's in downtown Des Moines for 50 years. It was an institution with an exciting backstory involving bootlegging, gambling and a larger-than-life personality of Babe himself. That the restaurant served great food was an added bonus to its history. I found some wonderful information about Babe in my research, including oral histories donated by Babe and Chuck Opphenburger to the Des Moines Public Library. Far less noteworthy, but an interesting tidbit nonetheless was that I worked a few days at Babe's before he saw me in action as a waitress and promptly fired me. In 1956, Chuck Bisignano (Babe's brother) and his wife Elizabeth launched Chuck's on the North Side of Des Moines in the Highland Park area. Today, it is still a popular and favorite restaurant that was recently sold for good money. Chuck's has a long history (since 1992) of supporting the community every Thanksgiving by facilitating and working with volunteers to prepare and deliver meals. And it is also where Bisignano's Italian Salad Dressing & Marinade was first created. Next up, the evolution of the dressing from house dressing at Chuck's to product marketed outside of the restaurant is something you'll surely find inspiring. Sarah Bisignano has been involved in working for years at Chuck's along with her Aunt Linda, who eventually took over ownership and ran the restaurant. About five years ago, decisions had to be made about the restaurant and the salad dressing when Linda's health declined. You'll want to hear the touching story about how Linda passed on the legacy to Sarah. NORTH SIDE OF DES MOINESI tell you straight up that The Delicious Story is truly a labor of love, and I've got the audio editing chops to prove it! Each week I must cut out some of my own peculiar speech habits to make the podcast “listenable.” I tend to repeat myself, repeat myself and say “wow” far too many times. But then there are the other snafus that I mercifully cut out when I make edits. This week, my enthusiasm got the best of me, and I revealed that I'm directionally challenged. One does not tell a North-sider that they are an East-sider or vice versa. (I'm terribly embarrassed in that part of the interview, see if you can hear it.) I mention this as a segue into explaining the significance of the North side of Des Moines. Established in the 1880s, the business district looks like a little town on its own. Located at 6th and Euclid, many of the buildings are original to when the community was first developed. Chuck's is housed in one of those buildings, and has been a significant fixture there for years. EMULSIFICATION, PASTACHINA AND TUNA NOODLE CASSEROLE Sarah was the epitome of the patient guest on The Delicious Story. She gently corrected me about directions but also about emulsification, too. See, my only issue with Bisignano's Italian Salad Dressing & Marinade is the fact that I can't get it on my salad fast enough. The oil (you'll be surprised by the oil used for the dressing) and vinegar along with all the other tasty ingredients are not emulsified in Bisignano's dressing, so you need to be the one to do this before each pour. I usually don't shake long enough, which makes my first pour lopsided. Sarah explained that with just a few more seconds effort to really shake up the ingredients I will enjoy a much tastier result. For more about the science behind emulsification, check out this post over at Food52. All the other ingredients in the dressing—with a good robust shaking—will create Bisignano's dressing nirvana.Next, Sarah's lovely story of a memorable meal is a treat for the ears. You can just imagine this family gathering where huge trays of Pastachina are served. The dish sounds marvelous—warm and flavorful, the kind of casserole that sticks to your ribs for an eternity. My only problem here was that I couldn't find out more about the name of the casserole or the history behind it. If you, dear listener, know of something, please share!Doesn't everyone have a go-to casserole that serves as the absolute comfort food? Sarah shares a touching story of her mom and tuna noodle casserole. I can relate to this dish being a favorite of mine, too. The thing with tuna noodle casserole is that the elements pulled together are each so unassuming—tuna, egg noodles, a can of mushroom soup and the crunchy bits of cracker or breadcrumb sprinkled on the top—but combine in one dish in a blanket of love. And, in my opinion, every casserole of this sort is best served with applesauce on the side. BISIGNANO'S ITALIAN SALAD DRESSING & MARINADE IN STORES NEAR YOU!But as I digress to casseroles, we do come back to talking about Sarah and the dressing. Currently, you can find Bisignano's Italian Salad Dressing & Marinade on shelves at Hy-Vee and Fareway. Sarah explains that the recent repackaging project and her work with a distributor will soon mean online ordering and other locations for store-bought bottles in the future. As for me, I'll be marinating vegetables in it this weekend and grilling them, all ready for a kick of Bisignano's dressing. Doesn't that sound wonderful? Knowing the history and how local this dressing is just adds to the delicious nature of it.

Proverbs 31:10-17, 25-31 A competent wife, how does one find her?    Her value is far above pearls. Her husband entrusts his heart to her,    and with her he will have all he needs. She brings him good and not trouble    all the days of her life. She seeks out wool and flax;    she works joyfully with her hands. She is like a fleet of merchant ships,    bringing food from a distance. She gets up while it is still night,    providing food for her household,    even some for her female servants. She surveys a field and acquires it;    from her own resources, she plants a vineyard. She works energetically;    her arms are powerful.   Strength and honor are her clothing;    she is confident about the future. Her mouth is full of wisdom;    kindly teaching is on her tongue. She is vigilant over the activities of her household;    she doesn’t eat the food of laziness. Her children bless her;    her husband praises her:    “Many women act competently,    but you surpass them all!”Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting,    but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.Let her share in the results of her work;    let her deeds praise her in the city gates.   The one tasked with the preaching from the text of sacred Scripture every Sunday has a particular power, as you can imagine, and a lot of that has to do with her or his selection of what texts from the Bible they choose to preach on.  The reality is that everyone, and even preachers, have a personal set of texts from the Bible they value more than other texts, favorite passages, favorite stories, favorite themes they pick out consciously and unconsciously as they decide what word to bring to a particular congregation. That truth struck me this week, as I chose to take on a text that is both beautiful in a way but not without problems, not without its issues, so to speak.  Sometimes I like a challenge, one that invites me to engage a text I would normally avoid for fear of offending someone or not being able to contexualize it properly, or simply having to deal with the obvious harm it has caused believers and unbelievers over the centuries. For example, I have never dealt in the pulpit with the texts on genocide in the book of Joshua, which were often used to justify genocide later in history, including the genocide of Native Americans in this country. Yes, we’ve studied those horrible texts in Bible studies I’ve lead – but to speak of such things in detail from the pulpit…I don’t know if I have the courage, or maybe even the stomach to do so.   Now, to be clear the ancient lesson we heard today is really not like those Joshua texts I just mentioned but it is not without its own complications.  And yet, I just want to say that after reading it after a long time of not doing so – again, we preachers have our favorite texts, after all – I have to admit that I was surprised by its tone, its praise of this “competent wife” and its praise for what this woman does.  This text is probably the most familiar passage from Proverbs, a book that has beguiled scholars for a long time. The book itself is composed mostly of one-line wisdom sayings, pieces of good advice about honesty, integrity, and the best way to live one’s life. Interestingly though, the first 9 chapters are different from the rest of the book, and different from this last chapter from Proverbs we just heard a few minutes ago – you see, in those first 9 chapters, there is a call to live a wise life, to embrace what the writer calls Lady Wisdom, or Woman Wisdom, Wisdom being often personified here in the Bible as a Woman, sometimes to the point that Woman Wisdom is believed to be a co-creator of the world as you find in Proverbs 8.  Now, the writer does set up a duality for his readers – and it was likely a “he” who wrote this book, as with all the books of the Bible – because there is Woman Wisdom, on the one hand, and the Mysterious Woman, the temptress who leads people astray, inviting them to make bad choices, unwise choices. You can see the virgin or whore dichotomy that has been imposed on women throughout the centuries in these first nine chapters, though it is not the focal point of the text, just the lens with which the male author is trying to make his point about choosing the right path. Of course, there is no similar virgin/whore dynamic for males in the Bible or in our culture, a reminder that the Bible, however much we value and love it, is still a patriarchal text, one written by males with the assumption that its primary readers would be fellow men.   Nonetheless, despite the obvious patriarchal lens through which today’s text is written, there are some real surprises in terms of what this ideal wife or woman is praised for.  But first, know this: the Hebrew word for “competent” can also be translated as “strong,” and the Hebrew word for “wife” can also be translated as “woman” though I think the translators simply go with the way that those words are usually translated in other parts of the Bible. Still, though, the possibility of that translation, a “strong woman” adds a different tone to the hearing of these words, especially as it relates to what this woman is being praised for.  Not only is this woman given accolades for doing those things associated with her expected household duties, she is said to have surveyed a field and acquired it with her resources, her own funds. In a generally patriarchal system, you wouldn’t expect a woman to both make the decision to buy a piece of land AND does so with her own financial resources. Not only does she work joyfully with her own hands with wool and flax, she trades successfully with those goods, bringing in income through the sale of those items.  And yes, it should also be clear to us that this woman being praised is clearly a woman of means – she has female servants after all, but she acts kindly to these other women, making sure they have food while they are employed with her – she is about generosity and mercy. She is kind with her tongue, this King Lemuel proclaims, this king of who we have no record of, either of him or his kingdom, and yet her arms, her arms are powerful – it reminds me of those Rosie Riveter posters from World War 2, with Rosie flexing her biceps!   Obviously, though, the writer, whomever he may be, still makes the assumptions of his time and place, which we all do, of course – we are all creatures of a time and place. He praises her for excellence within her “appropriate” domain, the household, and though, in another passage I didn’t include in today’s reading, he will praise this strong woman for running her household so well that the husband can join the other men at the city gates to adjudicate the conflicts of his day, the assumption being of course, that she will not or should not join him there in the practice of this civic duty – this is men’s work. Of course, there is Deborah in the book of judges who leads her people well but she is indeed a rare female leader in the Scriptures. The patriarchy dictates the rules and the duties of both men and women, this male dominance decides where and how men and women can function in a society, limiting women, certainly, but also limiting men and what they can be and how they should function in the society. The patriarchy, the assumption that men should dominate all strata of personal and public life, it has cost women so much over thousands of years in terms of dreams, hopes, and talent – so much has been lost to the evil of patriarchy, and women have paid a horrible price for men’s inability to see that these assigned roles for women and men have squashed so much talent, intelligence and leadership. Think of all that we could have accomplished if both men AND women had been able to equally tackle medicine and engineering and architecture and parenting and religion through the centuries.  Sadly, our Bible has been a weapon used in patriarchy, either as perpetrator of it, or, perhaps, more realistically, a reflection of the worst of ancient cultures, and of human character, this need to control, dominate, and limit others for personal, economic and social reasons.   Not only does this description of a strong woman both surprise us in its historical context and yet also assumes the rightness of the patriarchy, it also puts an impossible burden on women. Even if one wishes to embrace the patriarchal world of the text with its assumptions of what a competent wife looks like, it just seems like an impossible list to actually do – and once again women are burdened with expectations that rarely can be met by anyone. I remember my lovely and wonderful and strong Baptist Aunt Linda, whose husband Jim would praise her using the words of Proverbs 31, our text – and she’d accepted the praise, though knowing Aunt Linda, she did with a raised eyebrow – you’ve got some pretty high and somewhat unrealistic expectations of what any woman, much less any person can possibly be. The haunting thing about this list of almost impossible traits to fulfill is there is no equivalent text in Scripture that names what a competent or strong husband or man looks like, no listing out of what is expected of a man – the list of expectations is largely a one-way street, sadly, falling most heavily on women. Again, though that doesn’t mean that men haven’t paid a price for the assumptions that the ancient Biblical writers wrote into texts that one day would be named as holy – the patriarchy destroys so much possibility in men, as Betty Strong wrote in words from our Modern Lesson, words she crafted for the World Council of Churches. “There is a woman tired of being called ‘an emotional female,’ and a there is a man who is denied the right to be weak and to be gentle, and “there is a woman who is tired of being a sex object and there is a man worried about his potency.” And then there is the unintended, unexpected victims of the patriarchy. Some have argued that the root of homophobia is actually to be found in sexism, since gay men have often been reviled for being like women, for denigrating themselves by acting like a woman in public, or even in the bedroom – the dismissal and sometimes hostility towards woman become transferred onto gay men, who are not fulfilling the gender role that the patriarchy has assigned them from birth.  Lesbian women too have felt the effect of the patriarchy – to be non-stereotypically female, to carry traces of the stereotypical male within a female body, as with a male carrying traces of the stereotypical female within the male body, it causes such rage in some men that it sometimes comes out in violence. The horrific death toll that trans women have paid for trying to live their authentic selves is a testimony to the wreckage caused by the patriarchy.   Still, the burden almost always most acutely falls upon women’s lives and bodies, as we can see in the recent Supreme Court controversy with Judge Kavanaugh and Professor Blasey Ford. It all reminded me of an incident that happened in the small town in Michigan I once pastored in, where a teenage girl accused one of the more popular boys, a star athlete, of raping her. It really divided the town in two, but it was so damning that the most concern voiced was for the young man who was being accused – what would these charges do to his future, his life, to be accused of this heinous deed by this young woman? There were rumors, of course, of her sexual prowess, which is almost always the typical way of trying to discredit women’s stories in these matters, hinting somehow, even if it was true, that for a woman to embrace and desire sex, getting raped is getting what she deserves. Not surprisingly, there was not much talk of his sexual past – it was the old virgin/whore dynamic coming into play once again. Whether or not you believe Professor Blasey Ford account about what happened so long ago, know that it will almost always be the female accuser of men that will pay the heavier costs – that’s what the patriarchy does, the patriarchy re-victimizes women, prioritizing men’s reputation over the witness and testimony of women who have often experienced sexual trauma at the hands of these very men.      So, what are we followers of Jesus, this One, who though steeped in a time and place where equality was far from the norm, followers of this One, who acknowledged his female disciples and seemed to embrace them in such surprising ways for his time – what are we followers of this Jesus to do with this text, the good of it, the bad of it, and the fact that so often our sacred texts seemingly support the patriarchy?  We know that women dominated the pews of the early church, as they do now – remember that patriarchal slur hurled at the church by some of its earliest enemies, that Christianity was a women’s religion, centered around a man who challenged the patriarchy and the ancient assumptions of what a man should be and say, challenging it so often through his words, and his simple gentleness, his compassion, his love. And remember this, as I said a few weeks ago – when the church won’t listen to the still-speaking God, the Spirit of God will go outside the church to do a work of justice, and then that same Spirit will reach back inside the church to change the church from the outside in. God’s Spirit will not be thwarted, will not be denied, and though we so often get in the Spirit’s way, God wins, and God will do whatever it takes to get the Church, Christ’s own body, to do the right thing. If the church won’t listen, God’s spirit will speak elsewhere, until the church catches up – thank God for the women’s movement – and I mean it, thank God for the women’s movement. At the recent installation of the Rev. Kim Shelton of the Good News Community Church this past weekend, a speaker mentioned that she was once in a group of men, one of who told her that he didn’t believe in women preachers – and I kept thinking, well, I guess you don’t believe what’s clearly in front of you? I mean, why believe your lying eyes, because here she is, just being a woman preacher, and she’s doing a really good job at it, better than most men I know. What I’m grateful for is this: God is relentless, and though we humans resist, God eventually overcomes that resistance – and justice comes, eventually. I wish the justice was faster and more complete, but I also wish we weren’t so resistance to what God is doing in the world, I wish we humans didn’t resist God’s Spirit so much. I suppose that is the cost of having free will, the ability to say no to God’s yes’s, but this free will also puts such importance on us saying yes to God’s yes, choosing to stand with our sisters, honoring their stories, celebrating their truths, and for us men, resisting the patriarchy, the lies we’ve been fed with our own mother’s milk, to play off a line from an Audre Lorde poem. God’s doing a new thing, through the #Metoo movement, and even in the #churchtoo movement, a church version of the #metoo movement, and thankfully less of us are being resistant to those difficult truths about some men’s behavior. But men, myself included, need to do our work, which means unmasking our assumptions, challenging our sometimes warped instincts and biases, and opening ourselves up to voices that tell of women’s often very different experiences in the world, of struggles we’ve not known or have barely begun to acknowledge. What are we to do as followers of Jesus?  We’re not to resist God’s movement in the world, and instead we are to embrace the difficult and yet liberating truth we have been forced to confront in ourselves and within the patriarchy that we all inhabit. I am grateful to women, and to men, and to all of us in-between, for listening to the still-speaking God, who loves us, and who will not let us stay in our sin and who asks us to listen to the still speaking God, and to voices we have denied for too long – voices that likely carry the words of the Still speaking God. Amen.

This week on Sparking Change, Aoife McElwain, food writer for The Irish Times and Totally Dublin, talks to Dil about her new book Slow to Work, and the importance of learning to slow down and manage your anxiety. Dill hears all about Aoife’s Aunt Linda – the name she gives her inner critic – and why naming that voice inside our head is a helpful way to externalise those thoughts. Slow at Work came about after Aoife reached the tipping point of burn out, just as her career was starting to take off, and she realised the importance of taking care of herself, in the short and long-term. Eventually, mental health issues crossed over into the physical, and Aoife realised first hand the importance of asking for help when we need it, and of taking some time out when we’ve taken on too much.
