In this episode I am talking with Kat Farrants from the UK about her successes with her Australian Shepherds in high levels of competition. We spend our time talking about dog sports and mindset and all things Aussie competition. It's a great conversation and I am sure you will enjoy more stories about the working Australian Shepherd. Kat Farrants has owned Aussies for 25 years, and bred for 20 years. She started in obedience with Shanti, her homebred Aussie, at pre-beginners, and in just 4 years, we were working Championship Class, and were the highest placed female Aussie in the crufts Obedience Championships. Her journey with Shanti was meteoritic. She quickly made Shanti's daughter, Gracie the third female Aussie Obedience Champion in history. Gracie is the only living Aussie Obedience Champion, and the only Aussie working Championship Class. For context, Kat has now competed at the Crufts Obedience Championships Five times, and in four of those times, she was the ONLY competitor of females to not have collies. This year, Gracie's been sick, so isn't at the Crufts Obedience Championships, and there are NO DOGS OTHER THAN COLLIES competing! UK obedience is a super tough tough sport, and champions are very few and far between. It's been amazing to have the first homebred female Aussie Champions and first Mother and Daughter champions. Gracie now competes in IGP (Schutzhund) and is the only Aussie to qualify IGP3 in the UK in history, and she has competed at National level in IGP. We are working towards the qualifiers for the world championships, where she is competing against Malis and GSD's and is aiming to be the first Aussie worldwide to compete at the IGP World Championships. Kat occasionally breeds, under the Solarwind affix, and she runs the Mindset for Dog Sports Membership, she is known as the Dog Sports Coach. The secret to Kat's success? Is it's all in the mind (and with Aussies this is the most important thing of all!) The Farmyard Guide to Focused Marketing: Lessons from a Chicken, Dog, and Rooster In this episode, we explore how health entrepreneurs can avoid wasting time and money on ineffective marketing by learning from the behaviors of farm animals. Drawing parallels with a chicken, a dog, and a rooster, the video emphasizes the power of focused, consistent, and clear marketing efforts. Key lessons include the necessity of being persistent like an Australian Shepherd, the importance of clarifying your message and targeting your audience like a rooster, and the pitfalls of spreading yourself too thin like a scattered chicken. If you've been with me for a while, you might notice—yep, the intro music is gone. A little too much? Maybe. But hey, we can sneak in a quick sample. There you go. Now, let's dive right in. This is episode 151, and today we're talking about dogs. Why? Because I love dogs, and if you're listening, chances are you do too. My wife and I just added a third pup to the family—yes, we took the plunge. Another miniature Australian Shepherd, named Indy Ann DiLorenzo. And let me tell you, the power of the puppy is real. The tiny teeth, the instant bathroom breaks, the sudden vanishing acts—it's all happening at once. Oh, and the nighttime squealing? Yeah, that too. But you know what? It's worth it. Dogs bring so much joy, and today, I want to talk about all the benefits of having a dog. First, there's the mental health boost. Science backs it up—petting a dog can lower stress, ease anxiety, and even help with depression. It's that unconditional love, that excited greeting when you walk through the door, that ability to live fully in the moment that makes dogs so special. Unlike us, they aren't doom-scrolling through social media or stressing over the latest news—they're just happy to be here. Then there's the physical health aspect. Daily walks, playing fetch, and just keeping up with a dog keeps you moving. My goal? 10,000 steps a day. And my dogs help me hit it. Plus, studies show dog owners tend to have lower blood pressure. I believe it. Dogs also help with social connection. If you're single, having a dog is a great icebreaker. You take your pup to the park, a coffee shop, or a brewery, and boom—instant conversation starter. And if you're not looking to date, dogs still bring people together through community events, dog training classes, and charities. When Kim and I got married, instead of gifts, we raised $5,000 for an animal shelter. Because, really, dogs give us so much—we love giving back. Structure and routine? Dogs keep you on track. They know when it's breakfast time, when it's walk time, and when it's time to relax. My dogs have better routines than some people I know. And with that routine comes a deep sense of purpose. They rely on you, and in turn, you become better at showing up—not just for them, but in other areas of life too. And let's talk about loyalty. Dogs are the ultimate ride-or-die companions. They're there when you're happy, when you're sad, when you just need someone to sit beside you. And they protect. Maybe not my three—they'd probably just bark at an intruder—but plenty of dogs take their job as guardians seriously. I'll never forget my childhood dog, Shotzi, running into the street to stop a car from hitting me while I was on my big wheel. That kind of loyalty? You don't forget it. Beyond that, dogs are just pure entertainment. They all have their own quirks and habits. Like Leia—say the word "bellies," and she flops over like a folding chair. Every time. And watching Indy navigate her new world? Non-stop laughs. Now, I know what some people say—dogs don't live long enough. And yeah, it's heartbreaking when we have to say goodbye. But in the time we do have, they teach us everything about love, resilience, and living in the moment. Every dog I've ever had left an imprint on my life, and I wouldn't trade a second of it. So, whether you're thinking about getting a dog, already have one, or just love hearing about them—this episode is for you. Let's celebrate man's best friend and all the ways they make life better. Stick around, because I've got some great stories, insights, and maybe a few puppy training confessions coming your way. Let's get into it.

In this engaging episode of "Shark Theory," host Baylor Barbee delves into the contrasting elements of personal strengths and life's inevitable challenges. With a personal anecdote reflecting on his dislike for cold weather juxtaposed with his Australian Shepherd dog's love for it, Baylor draws a parallel to how we can appreciate different circumstances and learn from them. The episode explores the notion that everyone thrives in different environments, and it's essential to find where one can make the most impact. Baylor emphasizes understanding and appreciating your current "season" in life, even if it doesn't align with your preferences. It's easy to compare yourself with others who seem to have it all together, but as Baylor points out, "Nobody has it all together in every area of your life." Instead of focusing on what you dislike about your current situation, he encourages listeners to seek productivity and positivity. The episode gives actionable advice on maintaining focus, fostering gratitude, and supporting others, even while you're not in your ideal circumstances. Key Takeaways: Everyone thrives differently; your strengths may not align with others', and that's okay. Avoid the "woe is me" mentality by understanding that nobody excels in every area of life. Focus on being productive and supportive, even when circumstances aren't favorable to you. Recognize that all seasons will eventually change, and it's crucial to be prepared for your moment. Approach each day not as good or bad but in terms of its effectiveness and productivity. Notable Quotes: "Nobody has it all together in every area of your life." "While I'm in a season that's not mine, how can I be productive?" "Eventually my season is coming. And when my season comes, I need to be ready." "When my focus is on myself, I can't think about how cold I am." "You might not be in your season, but perhaps that's a season of support."

Susan, with over 20 years of experience in leadership development, has a remarkable ability to recognize and disrupt unproductive patterns in leaders, helping them build high-performance teams.Susan's book, "The Leader's Playlist", emphasizes the power of music in leadership. Through coaching, Susan helped her identify the root of this pattern, create a playlist that represented her feelings, and develop a new playlist that embodied her desired emotional state, ultimately improving her relationships with colleagues.Susan explains that music's ability to change emotional states is well-known, but its potential to help identify and transform limiting patterns is less recognized. Music activates all four regions of the brain, making it a powerful tool for personal development. By pairing behavioral changes with music, individuals can accelerate their transformation and achieve their goals more effectively. Susan encourages leaders to be intentional about their music choices, using it as a tool for state change and personal growth. In this episode, I chat with Sheley Revis, a general internist and founder of the Fabulous McGrady and Friends Foundation, about the dog who changed her life and would later become the namesake of her organization. McGrady, a deaf, tri-coloured Australian Shepherd, was rescued from Ashe County Animal Control. Sheley had no experience working with deaf dogs but found McGrady to be a quick study, eager to learn with the sweetest temperament. McGrady worked as a therapy dog throughout his life, regularly working at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, to ease stress in travelers and airport staff alike. McGrady's legacy will live on through the McGrady Foundation, which advocates for deaf dogs and supports rural animal shelters in need in North & South Carolina.Resources: Content warning: this episode includes discussions of pet loss, which may be difficult for some listeners. Allison (Alli) Fender grew up in the gorgeous San Diego backcountry on a small Dairy and Beef operation. She attended San Diego Mesa College and played soccer on the women's team while attending the Animal Health program offered there. In 2014, she obtained her Associate of Science Degree in Animal Health Technology and became licensed as a Registered Veterinary Technician. She worked in several small animal hospitals in the area. A month after graduation in 2014, she and her high school sweetheart were married on Mesa Chiquita Ranch, where she grew up. Her dad gifted her and her husband, Bryce, ten bred heifers, which was the start of their beef herd. Flying F Ranch was established in 2020 after Bryce and Alli created the brand and business selling beef directly to San Diego consumers. Their motto is “We Give a Flying F About BEEF.” In 2021, they added Registered Black Angus cattle into their herd to improve carcass quality. The couple learned more about genetics and began breeding more mindfully, propelling their beef business to a higher level. The couple currently sells Black Angus Beef direct to consumer as whole/half shares and USDA retail at local farmer's markets. They recently started offering ranch to table experiences for San Diego locals to come enjoy a 5 course beef inspired meal curated by a local chef. They bring in local wineries and breweries to pair with the menu. The dinners are on open pastures on the ranch with cattle grazing nearby. Bryce and Alli raise their two sons, Warren and Wells, on the ranch together. They believe raising the next generation beside them will teach the young boys valuable life lessons and memories. Alli is an active member and Vice President of the San Diego CowBelles and helps with local Ag in the Classroom lessons, Beef Promotion, and Advocacy for our industry. Alli was selected as a NCBA Trailblazer in 2023 where she learned how to share her story in the cattle industry and gain trust with consumers through her story telling and advocacy efforts. In her spare time, she breeds and shows Australian Shepherds, participates in CrossFit, helps with school activities for her sons, is a dog leader for the Julian/Santa Ysabel 4H and manages the business of Flying F Ranch. Through his narrative, Baylor emphasizes how intentionality in daily actions can lead to a more fulfilling life, urging listeners to trust the expertise of others, especially in times of personal uncertainty. Key Takeaways: Trust in Experts: Trust professionals who have the knowledge and experience to handle situations out of your control. Managing Worry: Reflect on the root of anxieties and recognize when you've done everything you can to manage them. Notable Quotes: "I think so many of us are in situations where we just literally worry ourselves sick." "If you want to squeeze all the juice out of life, if you want to get as much out of it, then you have to put as much into it." "The best way to put as much as you can into your day is to be fully present in whatever it is you're doing." "If you know that you've done everything you can do, you know you've prepared as best as possible, you have to be able to trust the expertise of other people." This week we are talking with Jessica Stricker who has 2 Australian Shepherds, Ivy and Riddler. She competes in a variety of sports including disc, dock diving, barn hunt, agility, scent work and fastCAT. Additionally, she is a Canine Good Citizen and Trick evaluator for AKC as well as being a trick evaluator, canine conditioning and fitness coach, animal actors evaluator, and stunt dog judge for Do More With Your Dog. As if that wasn't enough, she is a judge for UpDog and the Anthem Toss and Fetch club. We discuss tick training, which is not technically a sport but a certification. However, it's a great place to get started with classes or even training on your own. The great thing about trick training is it is great for beginners, or you can take it to the level Jessica has with her dog Ivy, who knows 101 different tricks and is only 1 of 3 dogs in AZ who has a Trick Dog Champion Masters title. AKC and Do More With Your Dog are two organizations that you can currently get certifications through. We all agree that training tricks helped enhance our relationship with our dogs, which is why it holds such a special place in our hearts. We also had the chance to talk about disc (frisbee). There are a variety of teams and organizations to compete and train with, so you can be sure to find the right fit for you and your dog. There are even different types of competitions that range from rolling discs on the ground to making a 90-minute routine that include tricks interwoven with disc. Jessica shares how inclusive disc is for dogs and people, at all levels. There are lots of options to play the game of disc including having someone else throw for you. So, if you are worried about your throwing arm abilities there are still ways for you to get involved with your dog. We love that Jessica recognizes and emphasizes the relational elements of training tricks and disc over the certification levels of each. So even if you aren't interested in competing, she breaks down how it could still benefit you to join a club or train with your dog on your own, because at the end of the day it's all about having fun with your dog. In this insightful episode of the "Shark Theory' podcast, host Baylor Barbee dives into the life lessons learned from observing his intelligent yet peculiar Australian Shepherd puppy. Drawing parallels between his puppy's behavior and human growth strategies, Baylor explores the importance of selective attention, the power of saying "no," and positioning oneself for success. Baylor discusses how his dog's selective hearing and staunch refusal to go out in the summer heat exemplify a crucial strategy for personal development: knowing what you won't do. He shares his own experiences of how overcommitting and saying "yes" to too many things spread him thin, underlining the value of focusing on fewer, more aligned opportunities. Highlighting concepts from the book "The Disciplined Art of Less," Baylor emphasizes that saying "no" opens up more opportunities for a definitive "yes," pivotal in finding the perfect fit for one's goals and aspirations. Moreover, Baylor shares actionable advice on positioning oneself for success. Using examples from his dog's behavior – such as positioning himself strategically to get what he wants – Baylor encourages listeners to understand and pursue what genuinely excites them. By being mindful of their goals and surrounding themselves with conducive environments, individuals can achieve greater fulfillment and joy. Baylor concludes with a call to focus on what truly matters, ensuring personal actions are aligned with long-term aspirations. Key Takeaways: The importance of identifying and adhering to what you will not do as a strategy for growth. Saying "no" more often can lead to better and more aligned opportunities. Avoiding the "land of maybe" helps clarify true commitments and intentions. Positioning yourself in environments and around people that align with your goals enhances the chances of success. Personal fulfillment comes from being clear about what excites you and actively pursuing it. Notable Quotes: "A large part of what you want to get accomplished and what you want to do comes down to what you're not going to do." "If it's not like an absolute yes, then it has to be a definitive no." "All you're doing is spreading yourself thin under the illusion of progress and that really wasn't the reality." "Your first obligation is to appease yourself, to appease your goals, to appease your dreams." "Be okay saying no. Be okay not being invited. Be okay with turning down requests to do things right." English, with its complex phonetic rules, presents challenges for pronunciation. Seriously, can anyone say Worcester right? In this week's episode, our storytellers delve into the personal and psychological aspects of pronunciation, exploring the nuances and hang-ups associated with the way people say certain words Part 1: As someone who values language, Jerzy Gwiazdowski is thrown into turmoil when his partner says “suposably.” Part 2: No one can ever say Casie Caldwell's name correctly and it makes her furious. Jerzy Gwiazdowski is a writer/performer who has appeared on Broadway, originated roles in new plays (NYC and regionally) and made numerous film/TV/streaming appearances. His plays have been produced on four continents. Jerzy is co-creator of Vocabaret, a monthly wordplay variety show since 2019. An ten-time champion at the O.Henry Pun-Off World Championships, Jerzy is pretty sure he's the winningest wordplay competitor in the world. His most recent project—THE LIE (a True Story)—is a solo show about the time he gave the greatest performance in history (which was only ever seen by one seven-year-old child). Alum: UNC School of the Arts. Faculty: The New School. Once deep-fried in an almost 20-year-long restaurant career, Casie Caldwell has now simmered down into the world of marketing consulting. While her culinary chronicles remain a proud part of her legacy, it's her newfound passion for pickleball that's spicing up her life. Her friends joke about her undeniable "pickleball problem” now that she's crafted her work schedule around being on the court five times a week without fail. And her penchant for decorating everything, including her Halloween décor, with everything pickleball-related, truly gives the game away! Beyond the court, Casie cherishes the art of storytelling and life's quieter moments on the lake with her wife and ever-loyal Australian Shepherd, Indigo. Trading the sizzle of restaurant operations for the pop of pickleball shots, she's found a delightful balance between her professional journey and her playful present. In this motivational installment of Shark Theory, host Baylor Barbee shares profound insights on taking action towards our goals without being hindered by uncertainties. Drawing inspiration from his Australian Shepherd puppy's eagerness for walks, Baylor encourages listeners to embark on life's adventures with a similar unencumbered approach. Diving into the heart of the matter, Baylor reflects on how individuals can achieve extraordinary progress by focusing on action rather than getting bogged down by potential setbacks. He stresses the power of having an "action word," a personal trigger that propels one towards productivity and progress. Baylor's message is an uplifting narrative on how to cultivate a mindset that emphasizes capabilities over challenges. Central to the episode is Baylor's perspective on reframing one's journey not just as a path to a destination but as an opportunity for self-discovery and the realization of one's worth. Through relatable anecdotes, including his personal experience with trail running, Baylor adeptly illustrates the transformative power of pushing past perceived limits. Key Takeaways: Embrace life's adventures like an excited puppy: go forward without obsessing over conditions or end points. Develop an "action word" that triggers you into motion, much like an athlete entering "game time." View challenges not as measures of distance to be covered, but as opportunities for progressive achievement. The real triumph lies in overcoming mental barriers and realizing your latent capabilities. A journey's success is not always measured by its destination but by the perseverance and personal growth, it instills. Notable Quotes: "What if we just believed in ourselves enough to just step out there and go toward whatever it is that we're after?" "You can get so much more out of yourself if you quit worrying about all the conditions." "Your mind is capable of locking that in... when this word happens, I know that it's go time, right?" "What if the goal for your career... is simply for you to realize that you are worth or capable of far more than you're giving yourself credit for?" "By the time we got to the finish line, the race was already won. Because that mental metal in our mind of what we're capable of."

Yogi, a five-month-old Australian Shepherd, is experiencing reactivity and fearfulness towards strangers and objects. The issue started when he was around three months old. Yogi was obtained from a breeder who had multiple puppies at the same time, so individual socialization may have been lacking. Yogi's leash walking is good, but he becomes reactive when he sees triggers. He spends time in a crate or playpen when not supervised and is tethered when out in the house. Yogi has a short attention span on place and tends to hop off after a few minutes. He reacts to people carrying objects and changes in appearance. Yogi's reactions are milder towards family members and he can be redirected with treats. In this part of the conversation, Abbi and Millie discuss Yogi's reactive behavior and how to address it. They talk about how Yogi hides under objects when he feels threatened and barks at people or objects that approach him. They also discuss the use of leash corrections and the importance of teaching Yogi alternative ways to cope with his feelings of insecurity. Millie emphasizes the need for Yogi to connect back to Abbi in moments of reactivity and suggests leash drills to practice this. TakeawaysReactivity and fearfulness in puppies can be a result of inadequate socialization.Tethering and using a crate can help manage a puppy's behavior when not supervised.Building a strong place command can help a puppy learn to be calm and observe the environment without reacting.Using place work can create a safe space for a reactive dog and help them understand that they don't need to react to everything. It's important for a reactive dog to connect back to their owner in moments of reactivity.Leash drills can help a dog practice connecting back to their owner and staying calm in the presence of triggers.Advocating for a reactive dog by using place and managing their environment can help reduce their reactions. Use the pressure and release method to help a reactive dog calm down and learn that nothing will happen to them while on place.Practice place work in different environments and gradually introduce triggers to help the dog build confidence.Use a tether to teach the dog how to handle their reactions and self-soothe.Work with Millie here: https://www.mirrorimagek9.com/contactus Instagram: @thinklikeadogpodcast @Mirrorimagek9 @OzzieAlbiesFoundation
