The seventh instalment in the Jurassic Park (now Jurassic World) series, Jurassic World Rebirth might be the first of the sequels to really come close to capturing the kind of wonder, excitement and horror that the 1993 original offered. That might be in part because it cribs liberally from it, with both moments and entire sequences closely evocative of their 32-year-old counterparts. But there's plenty else that's new here, and Rebirth is a characterful expansion to the Jurassic Park story. Thoughts of containment have finally been totally discarded - dinosaurs have now been roaming the Earth for some time, to the point that they're dying out everywhere other than a narrow band around the equator, which is illegal for human travel. So that's where we're headed, of course, as a pharmecutical exec seeking to make a fortune from dino-sourced drugs hires a team of mercenaries to extract blood from three creatures: one that swims, one that walks, and one that flies. It's a decent structure that tells you what to expect and allows for a variety of settings and action, into which are placed such charismatic stars as Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey and Rupert Friend. Director Gareth Edwards builds the world beautifully, exploiting it for that sense of scale that so defines his aesthetic, and reminding Mike in particular of his feature debut Monsters; and although in simple terms - this is, ultimately, a blockbuster sequel - the film has a moral message worth expressing. Jurassic World Rebirth is easily the best of the Jurassic sequels and equally easy to recommend. Just try not to focus too much on how it reminds you of a better film from 1993. Recorded on 13th July 2025.

After a Spring hiatus, Byrd and Matt come back to discuss Jurassic World Rebirth, the newest entry in the Jurassic Park franchise directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla 2014, Monsters, Star Wars: Rogue One). This entry follows a group of mercenaries (led by Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali) tasked with gathering dino DNA for medical research by going to an island used for genetic experimentation. Along the way they meet up with a family they save during a Mosasaur attack. We discuss an endless amount of dinosaur chase sequences, the rushed production of the film, Snickers wrappers, Lays potato chips, and the death of the "director as auteur" in blockbuster film making. So how does this one compare to the last few entries? Listen and find out!
Jurassic Park (1993) is one of the greatest films of all time. Based on a novel by Michael Crichton and directed Steven Spielberg, Jurassic Park brought dinosaurs to life in this sci-fi action masterpiece. It stars Sam Neill as Alan Grant and Laura Dern as Ellie Sattler, both paleontologists, Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm, a mathematician and chaos theorist, Richard Attenborough as John Hammond, CEO and founder of Jurassic Park, Joseph Mazzello as Tim Murphy, Hammond's grandson, Ariana Richards as Hammond's granddaughter, Samuel L. Jackson as Ray Arnold, Jurassic Park chief engineer and Wayne Knight as Dennis Nedry, Jurassic Park computer programmer. The first guests to the groundbreaking theme park encounter some technical difficulties when a disgruntled employee takes Jurassic Park offline. Jurassic Park is Jay's favourite film of all time and unsurprisingly it scored very highly for recommendabilty only dropping a few points on engagement to score 4.75 overall. Disaster and survival movies don't have the best track record when it comes to their treatment of women. From who deserves to die, consumption of female bodies, to ice queens who, gasp, don't want kids, what are these movies saying about who deserves redemption and who deserves to die? In this classic, we look into two examples - Jurassic World and Deep Blue Sea.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We watch the fifth installment in the Jurassic Park cinematic franchise. In this one, our heroes must return to dinosaur island to try to re-classify the dinosaurs as a protected species, but it turns out the corporate upstarts want to really use the dinosaurs for profit and...oh I'm sorry I was reading my Lost World notes. In this one the island blows up.

Send us a textThe world freezes over in a matter of days. Could you survive? We tackle "The Day After Tomorrow," the 2004 disaster film where climate change triggers a catastrophic deep freeze across the Northern Hemisphere. What makes this apocalyptic scenario fascinating isn't just the spectacle of tornadoes ripping through Los Angeles or a massive tsunami crashing into New York City—it's the survival challenges faced by characters trapped in a rapidly freezing world. Jake Gyllenhaal's character and fellow survivors hole up in the New York Public Library, burning books for warmth as temperatures plummet to deadly levels. We dive deep into the reality versus fiction of climate catastrophe. While the movie accelerates processes that would actually take centuries into mere days, some core concepts have scientific merit. The disruption of ocean currents like the Gulf Stream could indeed affect global climate patterns, just not overnight. Our hosts debate how much impact humans truly have on climate change, acknowledging the planet's natural warming and cooling cycles while considering our ecological footprint. The real value comes in analyzing practical survival tactics. Would burning books be your best option? Probably not—we explore better alternatives like building efficient rocket stoves, creating insulated micro-environments, and proper clothing choices for extreme cold. The homeless character actually provides the most practical advice about insulation, proving survival knowledge often comes from unexpected sources.Between fits of laughter and nostalgic tangents about Oregon Trail and Jurassic Park animatronics, we uncover genuinely useful emergency preparedness tips. Whether facing a fictional superstorm or a real-world winter power outage, knowing how to conserve body heat could save your life.Ready to test your disaster preparedness knowledge? Jurassic World: Rebirth made a lot of money at the box office, just like the previous Jurassic World movies, but nobody seems to like it or them. So how did the franchise that began in 1993 with Jurassic Park get to this point? Kyle seeks to answer that question this week with Adam Murray, who has spent a lot of time researching all things Jurassic.

"Deepest. Bluest. My hat is like a shark's fin." - Henry David Thoreau This week, we're visiting the Aquatica Research Facility and submerging ourselves in the 1999 sci-fi/action/thriller Deep Blue Sea. Originally conceived as Jurassic Park meets Jaws, the filmmakers ultimately decided to take a page from Alien's playbook instead. Join us as we discuss the pros and cons of that approach, compare the finished film with earlier iterations of the script, go over our favorite characters and set pieces, dissect the lyrics of LL Cool J's tie-in song, try to make sense of the two straight-to-video sequels, and contemplate DBS's place in the pantheon of non-Jaws shark movies. Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech TrainingMatt Fanslow dives into an unexpected but fascinating comparison between Jurassic Park and the auto repair industry, exploring themes of chaos theory, unintended consequences, and the importance of foundational knowledge. Drawing parallels from the iconic film (and Michael Crichton's novels), Matt discusses how small decisions—like cutting corners or skipping fundamentals—can lead to big, unpredictable outcomes in business, careers, and life.Key Topics Discussed:"Your Scientists Were So Preoccupied With Whether They Could, They Didn't Stop to Think If They Should"How the pursuit of innovation without foresight mirrors challenges in the automotive industry. The dangers of prioritizing profit or speed over sustainability and safety.Chaos Theory & The Butterfly EffectSmall, seemingly insignificant actions can have massive consequences (e.g., a poorly coded security system in Jurassic Park → dinosaur chaos).Applying this to business: How initial conditions (hiring, training, ethics) shape long-term success or failure. The Perils of Skipping FundamentalsIan Malcolm's critique in Jurassic Park: "You stood on the shoulders of giants but never learned the underlying theory."Why technicians can't jump straight to advanced diagnostics (e.g., lab scopes) without mastering electrical fundamentals."Fundamental ≠ easy. It's the foundation everything else relies on."Unintended Consequences in Auto RepairNedry's sabotage: How underpaying for critical services (e.g., software, training) backfires.Diet analogy: One unhealthy choice can undermine progress—just like one overlooked repair detail can lead to comebacks.Awareness & the "Little Things"The importance of paying attention to details in workflows, customer service, and team dynamics. Why hindsight often reveals blind spots—and how to cultivate proactive awareness.Notable Quotes:"Chaos theory isn't about randomness—it's about how tiny, early decisions create unpredictable outcomes.""You can't win the lottery without buying a ticket, but you also can't master diagnostics without understanding electricity.""Respect the journey. Mastery isn't just about skill; it's about humility and earned wisdom."Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech TrainingNAPA Autotech's team of ASE Master Certified Instructors are conducting over 1,200 classes covering 28 automotive topics. Chapter 7 of Megamorphs 2, part 18.5 of Animorphs Aloud, a fan-produced read-aloud version of the Animorphs series. Our first dino roar! It was tricky to decide what sounds to use, because I wanted ones that were a) free for use and b) weren't the Jurassic Park roars. I'd love to know what people think of the ones that I eventually picked out! The T-rex roar is from Videvo. Thanks for listening!
In episode 131 of The Filmumentaries Podcast, I sit down with director Phil Hawkins to talk about his journey from a kid obsessed with Jurassic Park and Star Wars to a filmmaker directing commercials, indie features, and ambitious projects like Star Wars: Origins and the Sky Original Robin in the Hoods. Phil shares how he taught himself filmmaking as a teenager, cutting together VHS tapes and roping in friends to create homemade sci-fi adventures. We discuss how this DIY approach evolved into making shorts and, later, a career in commercials – where he honed his craft in visual storytelling, working with big crews, and balancing creative ambition with tight schedules. We also talk about his fan-favourite short film Star Wars: Origins, which went viral for its bold concept and cinematic scale, and how it helped open doors to bigger opportunities, including his recent family feature Robin in the Hoods. Along the way, Phil reflects on the importance of collaboration, and the lessons learned from juggling creativity with industry realities. If you're interested in how a director moves from self-taught beginnings to studio-backed projects while staying true to his passion, this is a conversation worth hearing. Listen now to hear:How VHS edits and fan films became Phil's film school. The leap from shorts to commercials – and what commercials teach about storytelling.Making Star Wars: Origins and the risks and rewards of fan filmmaking.Crafting Robin in the Hoods and wrangling a cast of young actors for an adventure film.Phil's thoughts on building a creative, respectful set environment.Star Wars OriginsAll the links
For Episode 163, we review the latest film in the Jurassic Park franchise — a so-called rebirth featuring Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali. Jason's love for dinosaurs is stronger than ever, and we're joined by our brother Chris to break down the film's highs, lows, and everything in between. We hold the franchise accountable for its ongoing lack of story development and question whether audiences even care, as long as there are dinosaurs on screen. Jazz adds a fun twist by giving the guys their own island assignments — with hilarious results. We also dig into the cast chemistry, whether Scarlett's character was “playing the field,” and if the inclusion of the family subplot added anything of value. As always, we wrap with the ultimate question: Was It Good Though?
The latest four letter word of Four Letter Word season is dino. 'Dinosaur' is derived from Greek 'terrible lizard', and they could have called it 'whopping great lizard' or 'sublime lizard' or 'hey cool lizard', but no. TERRIBLE. Professor Hannah McGregor of Material Girls podcast and author of the book Clever Girl: Jurassic Park explains humans' relationship with language for dinosaurs, and why 'terrible' might be a perfect choice.Visit theallusionist.org/dino for more information about dinos, links to Hannah and her work, pics of the Crystal Palace Park dinosaurs, and the transcript of the episode.TOMORROW, ie 22 July, at 4pm UK time, BBC Radio 4 is broadcasting (and internetting) our piece Souvenirs, a sort of tragicomic essay/documentary/musical? about the two friends who around 1900 founded the groundbreaking Doves Press then almost immediately had a big falling out and spent more than a decade fighting over their in-house typeface. And THEN things got weird. If you like stories about history and/or petty revenge, this is for you. It's some of my best work - I give it 7.8 out of 10 - and I'd love for you to listen to it, via radio or BBC website or BBC Sounds (it'll be on there for a while after, I'm not sure how long). Jurassic Park: Rebirth is the latest installment in the Jurassic World series. And while dinosaur paleontologist Matt Lamanna has loved dinos — and the Jurassic Park franchise — his whole life, he says some of the films are more accurate than others. So how accurate are the ones unveiled in this latest movie? Matt gets into it with Short Wave host Regina G. Barber, who got a tour of the dinosaur exhibits where Matt works: the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. They also discuss the accuracy of the beloved giant creatures in the newest Jurassic World film, as well as some of the hits from the franchise's archive — like the dinosaur he was partially responsible for discovering.
