Many people think that the only way to monetize your blog is with ads, sponsors, and affiliates–but what if that’s not a fit for your business? Patreon is a membership platform that makes it easy for artists and creators to get paid for their work. It allows content creators like artists, musicians, and influencers to focus on their work full-time with the support of their patrons. For fans, the site is a good way of funding the work of your favorite creators, while also getting rewards in return. If you’ve never thought about using Patreon as a way to monetize your blog, today’s conversation just might change your mind! Plus, with the political and social justice climate of 2020, a lot more people are highlighting BIPOC voices than ever before. While uplifting marginalized voices is a beautiful thing, it can also be done in ways that are exploitive–so today, we’re talking about what NOT to do when amplifying BIPOC voices. My guest today, Anela Malik, is a food writer and advocate based in Washington, D.C. Malik’s work focuses on highlighting marginalized voices in food through her blog and Instagram, Feed the Malik, founded in 2018. Her platforms highlight the perspectives and contributions of women, immigrants, and the LGBTQ and Black communities in food culture and history. Recently, Malik has worked to uplift Black-owned food businesses in the DMV. She created the first comprehensive database of D.C.-area Black-owned restaurants open during COVID and launched a service connecting local Black-owned food businesses to free resources and expertise to help them survive and thrive. Malik’s work has been featured in publications, including The Washington Post, The Washingtonian, and Washington City Paper.   What you’ll learn in this episode: How do you find unrecognized stories in the food and restaurant industry? How to make the leap from a passion project to full-time blogging How to use Patreon, a monthly subscription site, to monetize your business What’s more important and valuable than the size of your audience and the algorithm Exploring People Of Color during Black Lives Matter, and how NOT to amplify black voices The politics of food and how it represents the power to change A business idea for restaurants during COVID   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. You’ve probably heard this word tossed around, but what does ‘the patriarchy’ really mean?   Dr. Valerie Rein defines the patriarchy as a system of oppression, where historically, the power, economic, political, and moral superiority belong to men; in turn, this reflects in how women are perceived, judged, and how we subconsciously do not trust ourselves, each other, and are not trusted by society.   This isn’t the fault of any particular person, or even ‘men’ as a whole. Everyone plays a role in upholding this invisible system. The beautiful thing is, once we can see the invisible, then we can actually liberate ourselves and create a better world.   My guest today, Dr. Valerie Rein, discovered Patriarchy Stress Disorder (PSD) and created the only science-backed system for helping women achieve their ultimate success, happiness, and fulfillment by healing the intergenerational trauma of oppression. She holds an EdM in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University and a PhD in Psychology from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.   Her bestselling book, Patriarchy Stress Disorder: The Invisible Inner Barrier to Women’s Happiness and Fulfillment has been heralded by Amazon reviewers as “the most important body of literary work of our modern times” and “perhaps the most important book of the century for women.” Her cutting-edge programs have helped thousands of women shift from survival to thriving and master the game of “How good can it get?” in their lives and work in the world.   What you’ll learn in this episode:   Who and what is the patriarchy? Like Myers-Briggs, the Enneagram, and many other profiling systems, Human Design is a personality model used to dive deeper in the understanding of the self.   Human Design combines layers of ancient modalities like the Sephirot of the Kabbalah, the Hindu-Brahmin Chakra system, the Chinese I’Ching, and Western Astrology with modern sciences like Biochemistry, Astronomy, Quantum Mechanics, and Genetics.   This system helps us understand our unique personal blueprint for our energy, how we make decisions, our strengths and weaknesses, where we are prone to conditioning, and so much more. How to Create Passive Income with Online Courses

Before I went on maternity leave earlier this year, I knew that I really wanted to create passive income in my business while I was away. For the past year, I had been experimenting with live launching my online course, The Six-Figure Blog Academy–see all my launch debriefs here. While I had figured out how to make that work well and even had my first six-figure launch in January 2020, I knew that wasn’t going to be an option while I was on maternity leave. This is when I decided to try moving my course to an evergreen model, thanks to Amy Porterfield’s amazing bonus training in her Digital Course Academy. I had always heard about the magical allure of the evergreen model–where your course is essentially always available to purchase–and it sounded amazing. It’s an automated funnel that, when done well, creates ease and sustainability in your business by bringing in regular revenue. In fact, we earned $58,279.76 in new revenue from our course while I was on maternity leave over just three months! This blew my mind and now I’m convinced of the power of evergreen. But even though things run mostly on auto-pilot with evergreen funnels, it definitely has some drawbacks and is not easy to set up well–especially if you want to do it in a way that feels authentic, while also creating true urgency with buyers. Today, I’m sharing all about the pros and cons of the evergreen course model when it comes to the process of getting it set up, maintaining it, the financial expectations, and the impact of evergreen on your user or student experience.   What you’ll learn in this episode: What an ‘evergreen funnel’ is The pros and cons of this model vs. a ‘closed-cart’ or ‘live launch’ model The key tech tool I use to make this process work on autopilot My 7 tips for going evergreen in your business   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. How would it feel if you could simplify your business… and your life? Let’s be real: our modern, hectic lifestyles are overwhelming, exhausting, and downright unhealthy. We are often on a quest for more; we give in to pressure every day to work more, own more, and do more. But why? To what end? When you push so hard, it inevitably leads to burnout. You simply can’t produce great work when you’re burned out, nor can you take care of yourself and be truly present to what matters most like your relationships, health, and overall well-being. The truth is, if you’re always keeping score of how you’re doing based on anything outside of yourself (like if you checked enough items off of your to-do list that day), then it’s time to question your motives for WHY you’re doing what you’re doing. When you embrace more of a minimalist approach to your life and business, you’ll counterintuitively discover that you can create more with less--all while being happier and more free. My guest today is Courtney Carver, a well-known simplicity and minimalist expert. Courtney is the author of Soulful Simplicity and the blog Be More With Less. Courtney moved from a devastating multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2006 to feeling the best she’s felt in decades, from being deep in debt and clutter to living debt and clutter-free. She realized after years of decluttering and letting go that happiness isn’t waiting for us, it’s within us. Courtney also writes about dressing with less in her book Project 333, The Minimalist Fashion Challenge That Proves Less Really is So Much More. Some of her concepts have truly changed my life, and I can’t wait to share her wisdom with you today!   What you’ll learn in this episode: How to let go of obsessing over your analytics Why people’s comments and reactions are not about you (even when they are!) How do you make soul-centered, big decisions in your business? Tips for creating a minimalist business that prioritizes your health and well-being (instead of always pushing to do more and leading to burnout) A minimalist’s perspective on how to measure and keep score of your progress How to let go of fear, scarcity, and not having or being enough Tips for simplifying your email management   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. Why do we focus on the negative experiences in our lives, even when there is so much good happening? The answer: it’s a biological design in our nervous system to keep us safe. If you think about it, it makes sense that it was evolutionarily advantageous to remember where pain was found, whereas remembering where you encountered joy was less essential for survival. Nowadays, we fortunately don’t often have to worry about literal survival like our ancestors did, but we still carry threats to our survival ALL the time without even realizing it.  As entrepreneurs, this has an enormous impact on our businesses! Of course, your mental health and emotional wellness play a huge role in your ability to get things done in your business and your life, while feeling joyful and on purpose.  But one sneaky thing most of us don’t realize is that we tend to overly identify with our businesses and think that we ARE our business, and that our safety comes from our business (newsflash: we aren’t and it doesn’t!).  Learning how to feel safe in our bodies and heal from past experiences is ESSENTIAL. It’s the root cause of what we need to get unstuck and start taking the steps to follow our dreams, and that’s exactly what we’re talking about today! My guest today is Dr. Elizabeth Cohen, a clinical psychologist with over 15 years of experience specializing in the treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders. Dr. Cohen has a particular expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and has treated adults, adolescents and children with state-of-the-art CBT treatments.  The underlying goal of Dr. Cohen’s practice is for clients to achieve synchronicity with the person they truly want to be.  Throughout her practice, Dr. Cohen has witnessed hundreds of clients break away from the fear, worry, and despair that had once defined them. She believes that it is a unique gift to be part of their journey towards a new, healthy and fulfilling definition of who they are.   What you’ll learn in this episode: Big T and Little T trauma and how it affects all of us (even if you don’t think it does!)–including how trauma impacts our businesses How to optimize your gratitude practice How to better balance your nervous system, and what flight, fight, or freeze looks like in our business lives How the known, even when it’s bad, keeps us safe from the unknown how healing the trauma IN our bodies (not our minds) can help us feel safe and take the steps we need to follow our dreams Practical solutions for healing trauma in the body   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. Whether you're a newbie at online business or you've been around for a few years, email marketing can be super intimidating. However, it's something you NEED to figure out and prioritize because email is by far your #1 most critical element if you have any type of online business (or really, a business of ANY kind)! But what do you even say to your list? How do you convert a subscriber into a sale? How often should you send emails? How do you keep your content interesting and inspire people to read it, instead of it being a major snoozefest that makes your subscribers never want to open another email from you again? The secret is that there is actually a formula you can follow to increase the effectiveness of your copywriting--all while humanizing people to be more than just a 'lead' or a 'subscriber'. If you understand why you’re writing what you’re writing and who you’re writing to, it will not only cut down on the time it takes you to write (goodbye staring at a blank page!), but your results will be infinitely better then shooting in the dark when it comes to building community and conversions (hello income and impact!). For example, one of the tips we’ll be sharing with you today is how to use a color-coded personality system to not only create diversity and variance in your emails, but to speak directly to different personality types so everyone on your list feels seen and understood. This system is GOLD!   My guest today is Tarzan Kay, a launch strategist and copywriter who teaches women (and a few good men) how to sell bigger, so they can serve bigger. Tarzan is a master of email marketing and former copywriter-for-hire (working with people like Amy Porterfield) who specializes in fun-to-read, more-addictive-than-Game-of-Thrones email copy. She also helps freelancers attract better clients who’ll reach deeper into their pockets to pay for top-quality services–also using the power of email, duh!   What you’ll learn in this episode: Why being the best and making all the money isn’t the most important thing for your business What it’s like to be the primary breadwinner for your family as a woman living in a patriarchal society while your partner is a stay-at-home-dad The 2 key things Tarzan did to earn over $200K in just her second year of business How to write effective emails that convert using Tarzan’s approach to color-coded personality (based on the DiSC personality assessment–and we even use some Game of Thrones characters to make it more interesting!) How many emails should you send during a launch? Plus the importance of pre-launch emails, her unique ’29-minutes-til-close’ email, and the post-promotion survey   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. Dr. Bernard Séguin will also share the best recommendations for the outcome of your dog’s canine cancer.   In this episode we’ll cover: New approaches to mast cell tumors including proportional margins (not yet published)  Only about 200 Surgical Oncologist Worldwide with the title. We’re not going to do what’s best for me, we’re going to do what’s best for the patient. Making a comprehensive plans for canine cancer patients with other specialists involved to determine the best route for each specific case. Having the owner be a part of the team in decision making. What is right for one dog in a family, may not be the same as the same kind of canine cancer of a dog in another family. Limb Sparing; preserving the function of limbs for dogs with bone tumors (Osteosarcoma). Amputation is an option, but for some families that is not acceptable so limb-sparing comes into play. New techniques to reconstruct the limb, using 3-D printing technology. Making implants specific for each dog. This is still is testing but long-term goals are to decrease complications, make the dog more resistant to infection, make them biodegradable and more. Dogs that have amputation verses the limb sparing have generally the same survival rate. Around 50% with a limb spare will have an infection. The big picture of surgical oncology is changing. Not every dog needs the big surgery and they’re now finding ways to control the tumors without doing those big surgeries. New evidence that will be published soon on the effects of Prednisone (a chemo-therapy drug for some forms of cancer). This has been highly controversial in our field. Prednisone does not change the grade of the tumor. If your dog has a mass or small tumor, DON’T WAIT! It’s not a life or death emergency now, but you don’t know if it’s benign or malignant. Get a sample taken of the mass, the longer you wait, the more difficult the tumor could be and the less likely it can be cured. Knowledge is power. Are you hustling your butt off to market your product, service, membership, or online course? Let me tell you a little secret: there's an easier way! I’m all about working smarter, not harder, and the marketing strategy we’re talking about today fits in perfectly with this philosophy. We’re deep-diving into how to utilize partnerships and affiliates to grow your business. It’s a “quadruple win” because it’s: a win for you (more sales and impact--without ever paying for traffic), a win for your team (it’s fun and takes some of the marketing pressure off), a win for your partners (they get to make money without having to deliver the product or service, all while helping their audience meet a need), and finally a win for the students or buyers (who discover something that helps them solve a problem or reach their goals). In my last Six-Figure Blog Academy launch in January 2020, 54% of sales came from affiliates! That's more than HALF! Partnerships generated over $50,000 in sales for my business in a two-week time period. On my wellness blog Root + Revel, we earned $86,285.10 in 2019 JUST from affiliate marketing alone! Convinced yet? If you have a course, product, or service and have been considering partnerships to make more money and get more sales, I HIGHLY recommend you take a listen! Laura Sprinkle is an affiliate launch strategist for online course creators and coaches who are ready to take their product launches to the next level with the help of affiliate partners. Through her affiliate concierge service, she offers bespoke affiliate solutions and has worked with clients such as Amy Porterfield, Selena Soo, and Todd Herman on some of the biggest and most successful launches in the online marketing world.    What you’ll learn in this episode: Why partnerships are a win-win for both you and your partners The 4 Rings of Recruitment and how to find partners to promote your stuff The 4 Phases of Affiliate Programs and how to get your affiliates to actually care and share about your program How to run your evergreen program like a live launch to build excitement with your partners How to know what partners are a good fit for you and your brand Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. 009: 7 Mindset Shifts to Make Today to Become an Unstoppable Entrepreneur

Success with Soul

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 11, 2020 44:59

Consciously making mindset shifts is the only way you'll bust through your upper limits and become the entrepreneur you've always dreamed about. In today's episode, we're debunking common myths and limiting beliefs when it comes to blogging (or any online business) and how to actually make those important mindset shifts so you can rewrite what's possible for yourself and actually create sustainable change. Don't believe everything you think. Most of what we think are just BELIEFS, NOT TRUTHS. Our minds have a tape player inside them, repeating the same thoughts again and again, day in and day out.  Would you believe that, according to the National Science Foundation, the average person has about 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts PER DAY, and of those thousands of thoughts, 80% are negative and 95% are exactly the same repetitive thoughts as the day before!?  Another interesting study from Cornell University found that 85% of what we worry about never happens. With the 15% of the worries that did happen, 79% of the subjects discovered that either they could handle the difficulty better than expected, or that the difficulty taught them a lesson worth learning. These studies make it pretty clear that if you (like most people) are doing the same things every day, thinking the same thoughts, and talking to the same people–your life is likely going to look and feel pretty much the same day-to-day (and unfortunately, a lot of it is negative). The good news? You already have everything you need to be successful.   Wayne Dyer said, "If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." With the mindset shifts and limiting beliefs we're addressing in today's show, I know that you'll be able to get out of your own way and make the changes necessary to step into your dreams and kick your old beliefs to the curb. Are you ready to start creating your new reality?   What you’ll learn in this episode: The #1 thing that holds us back from going for our dreams What limiting beliefs are, how to spot them, and--most importantly--how to change them into empowered truths! Why saying, “I’m just so busy all the time!” stunts your growth, and the mindset shift you need to make if you want to create more time in your day What to do when you want something but can't afford it Why you shouldn't wait until you're 'ready' to take action   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. Your money mindset is the most important thing when it comes to creating more wealth and building a sustainable business.  If you find yourself getting overwhelmed when you think about finances, or ignoring your money situation hoping it will go away or resolve itself, or if you carry shame around your money management, spending habits, or history with money–then you’re never going to create a stable, lasting business. When you learn how to celebrate money and work with it in a way that feels the most natural to you (NOT what some random expert tells you to do), then everything shifts and your abundance can flow. One incredibly useful framework to help you understand your motives, patterns, and how to step into a healthier version of yourself is using the sacred money archetypes. These eight archetypes show us how we filter and make our money decisions, revealing where we’re in alignment and where we’re in conflict with ourselves. Today we’re diving into understanding how your nervous system works and the importance of getting chiropractic care to alleviate stress. But how does this relate to entrepreneurship, you’re probably wondering? So many common day-to-day occurrences cause stress: Sitting at a desk for hours. Mental pressure. Financial strain. A fight with a loved one or disagreement with someone on your team. A tech glitch. Toxins and pollutants from food, beauty products, and our environments.  Literally thousands of things can cause a fight, flight, or freeze response in our bodies, which is a stressed state. This causes interference in our nervous system where the body becomes more and more challenged to do its job. By getting chiropractic support for your body, you’re removing interference and helping your body adapt to stress and function more optimally–which will help you in all aspects of your life and business. My guest on the podcast today is Dr. Krysti Wick, who has spent the past 12 years building a thriving family chiropractic practice in Wisconsin. As her practice grew over 500% in the past six years, so did Krysti’s desire to share her story and strategies through speaking and mentoring.  Dr. Krysti has coached hundreds of chiropractors from multiple countries and now her most recent venture, The Illuminated Squad, allows her to assist female DCs in amplifying their strengths and implementing the action steps necessary to build the practice of their dreams.   What you’ll learn in this episode: How chiropractic works and how improving your body’s ability to adapt to stress will make you a better leader, entrepreneur, and human The 3 types of stress our bodies experience and how you can minimize each The pros of cons of a brick and mortar business vs. online Should you hire the expert or train someone yourself?   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. What’s the secret to manifesting your dreams? Here’s a clue: it almost never happens in the ways we think it will. Contrary to what we think, we actually get in our own way when we get attached to ‘how’ it’s going to happen. The answer? We need to get rid of the hows and just commit to where we want to go. But balancing surrender with intentional action is no easy task, so we’re breaking it down to help get you closer to your dreams and goals, both in business and in life! My guest today is Danika Brysha, the founder and CEO of Model Meals (a healthy meal delivery business), a self-care coach, the creator of The Brunch Series wellness events and 2018 US tour, and an IMG Curve Model. All of her businesses are Danika’s way of giving back after her own personal transformation. For most of her life Danika suffered with an eating disorder that led her to some extremely dark places of self-hatred and destructive habits. After hitting the bottom mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially, Danika healed through a variety of tools, which she now shares with thousands of women all over the country.  Her work will only continue to help empower more and more women know that they, too, can live a life of their dreams!   What you’ll learn in this episode: Why it’s actually selfish NOT to practice self-care! Danika’s self-care checklist and how to use microtasks and teeny everyday habits that support your identity (rather than focusing on results and feeling guilt and shame for not achieving or doing) How to know when your spiritual connection and intuition is blocked, and what to do to change your inner dialogue and manifest the career and life of your dreams How to give yourself permission to truly follow what feels good The importance of profit vs. revenue and paying yourself   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. What if you could embrace your innateness…and stop doing stuff you suck at? The Myers-Briggs personality type assessment is the most popular personality test in the world. But what does it have to do with business? What if you knew how to focus, how to hire, how to plan, and how to operate in the day-to-day of your business based on your strengths, and surrounded yourself with people who have amazingly valuable–but very different–strengths than you? We all have strengths and very specific things we’re great at. Likewise, we all have things that we are NOT innately good at. What if you stopped trying to be well rounded and started solely working in your zone of genius? In this episode, Meyers-Briggs expert Jessica Butts has come up with a revolutionary new approach to get the most out of the Myers-Briggs personality assessment. Jessica is CEO and Founder of Front Seat Life where she helps inspire, motivate, and educate people to live their life from the ‘front seat’ using their innate abilities.  As you’re about to find out, the Myers-Briggs is FAR more than just a personality test!   What you’ll learn in this episode: How to embrace your innateness, stop doing things you suck at, and let go of being well rounded The differences between I and E, N and S, F and T, J and P on the Myers-Briggs assessment How Myers-Briggs can save marriages (and all relationships) and how to handle being married to your opposite The importance of both masculine and feminine energy in business What personality type is best suited for entrepreneurship, blogging, and owning your own business How Myers-Briggs can help entrepreneurs bring more ease into their businesses, increase productivity and hire the right people   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. There is so much talk these days about hustle. Everyone’s got a ‘side hustle’. We hear so many messages about hustling: it’s what the successful people do. If you want to be successful, they say, you gotta work harder than everyone else and at the expense of everything else. Sacrifice, long hours and hard work are the only ways to achieve success…so they say. But the truth is: I don’t believe in hustle.    They say you teach what you need to learn yourself.  I’ve struggled with the belief that I need to prove myself, achieve and constantly be “doing” in order to be worthy and loved. But the truth is, we are all inherently worthy regardless of our success. We all are born with value no matter what we do or don’t do. Hustle perpetuates the belief that we have to prove ourselves, which is simply not true.  Over the next two weeks, I will be sharing why hustle isn’t the answer and what I believe instead. And y’all, I am speaking as much to myself as I am to you. I don’t have it all figured out. But I have learned a few things along the way, and today I’m sharing all those lessons with you.   What you’ll learn in this episode: Why I think the hustle mentality is doing a disservice to you and your business. Work smarter, not harder:  A sustainable biz requires self-care, play, creativity, restorative rest, purposeful actions, setting intentions, and goals. How to get into alignment and gain clarity, plus some questions to support your planning + success. How to tap into both the masculine (hustle) and feminine (flow) energies in cycles and seasons.   Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. If you‘ve ever tried or are learning a language and haven‘t heard of the award-winning Prof. Krashen and his theory on second language acquisition, then you‘re in for a real treat and this episode will certainly blow your mind with things you probably haven’t heard yet - and you’ll likely get addicted to language learning. To answer some of the following questions, I talk to Prof. Stephen Krashen, one of the most prolific and most frequently cited scholars in the field of language education: Why language learning is still largely ineffective and hasn’t fundamentally improved over the last decadesHow Krashen’s theory about language acquisition, despite it being over 40 years old, remains groundbreakingWhy you can‘t learn a language by simply speaking it, contrary to popular beliefHow he can boldly claim that everyone acquires language in the same mannerWhy language learning is a subconscious process that can‘t be „turned off“Why there’s a strict separation between language acquisition and learning and why consciously learned language can only be used to monitor language output, but never be the source of spontaneous speechIn which particular order language is acquired and why that order does not change between learners, and is also not affected by explicit instructionWhy learning grammar does not improve language acquisitionWhy it‘s simply not true that children acquire languages more easily than adults and provide overwhelming scientific evidence to back up this claimHow to apply his theory in practiceAnd finally, discuss the the most powerful tool we have in language education Show Notes, Links & Resources Mentioned: gammabeyond.com/en/podcast/008Podcast Website: www.innovationalcorrectness.com---If you enjoyed this episode, could I ask you for one small favor?Would you please consider rating and reviewing this podcast on iTunes, Overcast or the podcast app of your choice? It's important to dream and have big ideas for where we want our business to go, this is called vision. The problem is that often our vision can be formed from internal ambitions. These ambitions can lead us into trouble and are more focused on us. Instead, what we should be striving for is creating a God-focused vision for both our lives and business. This takes the focus of our business off ourselves and our ambitions and makes it God-focused. The benefit of building our business on God's vision is that it opens the door for God's blessing as He knows that we will use them for the advancement of the Gospel.   On the Show Today You'll Learn   My journey towards discovering the meaning of vision The difference between ambition focused vision and God-focused vision What proverbs 28:18 teaches us about vision The heart of God as it relates to humanity How evangelism is the key to it all The characteristics of those with vision How vision informs how we do business God's way The results that vision produce in our lives and businesses   Links & Resources Mentioned https://podcast.jeffreyelder.com/2   Reach Me on the Socials Instagram | Facebook

It’s much more than getting you into college. It’s more about asking questions that we don’t ask kids early enough and if we did, it might help them navigate some of the tough parts of being a teen or tween in the US today. -Ana Homayoun In Episode 45, I talk with Ana Homayoun, a nationally recognized counselor and consultant specializing in strategies for junior high and high school students. I invited Ana on the podcast because I found her book Social Media Wellness: Helping Tweens and Teens Thrive in an Unbalanced Digital World (Corwin Teaching Essentials) to be an extremely timely and helpful book for parents, teachers, and others who work with youth.  Ana's Bio When Ana Homayoun was a senior in college, she had a professor ask her what qualities she wanted in a career. “I want to write, I want to travel, and I want to help people,” she said without missing the beat. Fifteen years later, she does all of the above. Ana Homayoun is an author, educator, and coach who helps teens and young adults grow into resilient, thoughtful, and engaged young people. She is the founder of the Silicon Valley-based Green Ivy Educational Consulting, and travels around the world speaking at schools and conferences. Her work has been featured in the NYTimes, Chicago Tribune, SF Chronicle, ABC News, and USA Today, among others, and she is a frequent guest on NPR. Her first book, That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week quickly became a classic for those who deal with disorganization and distractions. Her second book, The Myth of the Perfect Girl highlights the modern day dilemmas of today’s teen girls and young adult women, and was heralded by one college student as being the book “that discusses what everyone is dealing with but no one is talking about.” Her latest book, Social Media Wellness, caused her to spend far more hours than she would like to admit using Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Green Ivy Consulting For nearly two decades, Ana Homayoun’s work has focused on helping teenagers and young adults develop their own blueprints for success. Her prescriptive solutions promote better executive functioning skills, effectively address the culture of teen perfectionism, and provide practical real-life advice on how to promote social media wellness in an always-on digital world. Her authentic wisdom and sensible perspective is real, relevant, and adored by parents, educators, and teens around the world. Ana works with middle school and high school students on organization, time management, and finding purpose. She and her team help students figure out their own goals and the daily habits they need to practice in order to achieve those goals. She helps make the college admissions process an empowering rather than a stressful experience. I'm looking forward to my son (starting his senior year in August) working with Ana and her team at Green Ivy on his college application process. They help students organize the process so that they do 2-4 hours of work on applications per week (2-3 tasks), maximize sleep, wellness, and free time, and are done with applications by early December. Sounds great to me! Ana's Books That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week: Helping Disorganized and Distracted Boys Succeed in School and Life The Myth of the Perfect Girl: Helping Our Daughters Find Authentic Success and Happiness in School and Life “A lot of women read that book for their daughters and came up to me and said, ‘I read it for my daughter but I saw myself in it.’” (Note: I'm currently reading this and have used some of Ana's insights with our teenage campers.) Social Media Wellness: Helping Tweens and Teens Thrive in an Unbalanced Digital World (Corwin Teaching Essentials) Parents need to step back and realize that social media changes so quickly. Imagine how your kid is trying to navigate this. Adults themselves are dealing with the same issues. “Instead of coming from a place of fear, anger, and frustration, which a lot of parents do by default – you’re angry that you kids are on their phone – need to come from a place of empathy, compassion, and understanding.” Helping kids find daily and weekly detox times is critical. And being consistent about that and having conversations kid get the phone. “Kids need this structure. A lot of kids will say to me, ‘I really kind of wish my mom would take my phone away at night.’ It’s very hard for kids at that age – when they’re teens and tweens - to deal with the social pressure. They’re so relational, relationships matter, and they care what people think of them, but they also want to be off. And they don’t feel like they can, and they have permission to. Sometimes kids will get mad at you, but the general tone is that they will appreciate it.” “This is the kind of thing that kids don’t want to admit, but they need help with regulating. The Three "S"s (from Social Media Wellness) Healthy Socialization Effective Self-Regulation Overall Safety (Social, Emotional, Physical)” “We need to help kids understand that decisions matter in a way that they can be intentional and feel empowered to make really good choices. And those choices may be to opt into certain experiences and opt out of others.” Tools There are tools that can help (even tired parents) be consistent with keeping daily/weekly digital detox time for you and your kids: Circle with Disney Our Pact Moment Quotes from Ana “Many kids feel overwhelmed and exhausted, so they can’t really spend time on their hobbies, their interests, extracurricular activities, or things they might want to explore. So that’s really the cornerstone of our work.” “What is your own set of values and your own set of interests and how does that blend in to your daily life and work?” “How do you have purpose with your work in a way that’s meaningful and service-oriented for others and yourself?” “My students are really inspiring because they’re really following their personal interests and they’re all so varied.” “It’s much more than getting you into college … It’s more about asking questions that we don’t ask kids early enough and if we did, it might help them navigate some of the tough parts of being a teen or tween in the US today.” “I’ve always been a huge supporter of camp … I feel like camp is a big place where kids and adults have that reflective opportunity.” “I make kids get jobs in some forms of service – food service, retail – There’s a thread -- thinking on your feet, being able to work with the public.” “That’s the number one thing that I think is a weakness for a lot of students coming out of college is this misbelief that you should be working in internships when often they don’t have a lot for you to do. So you’re just sitting at a desk, not really interacting. Versus if you’re at a summer camp, you have got to be “on,” and you’re working with kids, and you’re negotiating, and you’re collaborating, and you’re communicating, and you’re being creative. You’re coming up with fun different activities.” “There are two things I look for. Were you a camp counselor and were you a resident advisor in college? It’s really important that people have those people skills and genuine joy in working with others." Quotes from Audrey “Just when you take people out of their day-to-day life, and whether it’s going in to see someone in your office or coming to camp, and you just give kids a little bit of time to reflect and talk, and you ask them questions and you hear their stories and you hear in their voice what they get most excited about it. You start finding those little clues to what’s going to fulfill this person this most.” “Life and culture are not allowing for that slowing down and reflecting.” “A lot of parents think their kid needs to have an internship with some big corporation during the summer when working at summer camp – the leadership skills, the bonding with the other people, that reflection time – there is nothing that a kid could during the summer of college that is a better experience for growth, communication, leadership skills, learning to work with other people, partner with other people.” Links & Resources Mentioned in this Episode Green Ivy Educational Consulting Ana Homayoun's Website: reading resources and free downloads related to her books – very solutions-oriented!    Dr. John Bergman became a chiropractor after an auto accident left him severely injured, but thanks to the therapies of alternative health, he made a full recovery. Inspired by the power he saw in the body, he now passionately advocates for alternative health practices.   EPISODE   When John Bergman got into a serious car wreck, he got the feeling that the medicine he was being prescribed may have been making him worse instead of better. He decided to research further and go to chiropractic school and has become a champion of alternative medicine. He wants people to truly start thinking about what modern medicine is doing to their bodies, and why their bodies are failing them. The answer, he believes, is that we might be misdiagnosing simple adaptive responses that our body is having to other problems - simple problems like stress, little exercise, too much time sitting, or taking in too many toxins from medications and processed foods. Traditional medicine might be overcomplicating things and overlooking our simple need to get our immune system in order. Luther is a resistance flexibility expert, which sounds like a niche specialty, but when is the last time we had the thought that "I'm just not a flexible person", or "I really lost the ability to touch my toes like I used to". We all have those things that we feel that we just can't do with our body. As it turns out, it goes a lot deeper than that. These flexibility problems we have are in majority attributed to dense fascia, a sort of build-up of hard scar tissue that prevents our muscles from doing what they should, and the effects of that can branch into difficulties with losing weight, anxiety problems, or constant pain. Luther, working from the teachings of Bob Cooley, has learned how to heal these problems permanently and instantaneously. We discuss how, along with:       the roles fascia has in our bodies       why a pain in your hip might really signal a problem in your hamstring       why you can pass 500 pounds through an elongated muscle       how resistance flexibility can identify why you aren't losing weight, and correct it instantly   For complete shownotes and more, please head over to www.optimizedgeek.com/luthercowden   LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED   thegeniusofflexibility.com    GET OPTIMIZED!         Get a massage for relaxation purposes, but understand that it isn't going to remove that buildup of fascial tissue that is giving you the root of your trouble.     Understand that you aren't an "inflexible" person, you are simply being stopped by an impeded biomechanical structure right now.     Recognize the difference between true "flexibility" and range of motion.
