This week we're replaying a classic episode where your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Christine Spagnoli of Greene Broillet & Wheeler LLP (https://www.gbw.law/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here to Rate and Review Episode Details: Santa Monica, California attorney Christine Spagnoli of Greene Broillet & Wheeler LLP shares how she advocated for injured church members and their grieving families after a Ford E350 15-passenger van overturned following a tire tread separation. In April 2004, four members of Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church traveled on Sacramento's I-5 in a van equipped with Goodyear Load Range E tires. Due to known tread separation problems, Goodyear conducted a voluntary replacement program on these tires, but Ford failed to notify its dealers. The tread on the church van's factory-mounted Goodyear tires separated, causing the van to flip four times, killing the driver William Brownell and front-seat passenger Tony Mauro and injuring passengers Marlene Shirley and Alexander Bessonov. Ford knew the E350 15-passenger van was susceptible to overturning, given professional driver tests that indicated oversteering and handling issues, but the company allowed the vehicle to go to market without modifying the design. In 2011, a Sacramento jury found Ford Motor Company negligent and returned a $73 million verdict, including $50 million in punitive damages against Ford in favor of the plaintiffs. View/Download Trial Documents Guest Bio: Christine D. Spagnoli Christine D. Chris is one of the state's most trusted legal leaders as a member of the Los Angeles Judicial Selection Advisory Committees (JSACs). In this episode we discuss the following issues: What does a good divorce look like with attorneys; what does a bad divorce look like with attorney representation? Why do people want to hurt each other in divorce? Why do some lawyers support hurting the other spouse? What is the primary function of a family law attorney? What is representation supposed to look like? The pejorative terms associated with family law attorneys that really don't serve the clients: Bulldog Attorneys; Lawyer Up; Pitbull Attorneys; Sharks. Is there a value to these words and the type of attorney associated with these words? Can lawyers help change public opinion of them? If so, how? Do lawyers want to change public opinion of their pejorative image? Myth vs Reality The Judge will totally find favor with me and with what I want. The meaner the better in court. How do you get the Judge to like you and want to listen to what you have to say and request? Family Law is a credibility issue. Divorce doesn't have to tear your family apart, so why does it? #familylaw #Judges #Attorneys #LawyerUp #PitbullAttorneys #BulldogAttorneys #Ruthless Attorneys #FamilyLawAttorneys #Litigation #Divorce #Court Trial #LawyerLimor #Court #Child Custody #ChildSupport #SpousalSupport #Mediation #CourtTV Biography of Limor Mojdehiazad, Esq. What would happen if in the middle of a huge personal injury case, where there might be a huge recovery, the Plaintiff and their spouse decide to get divorced? What if a couple's home burns down and in the middle of the lawsuit against the tortfeasor, they decide to call it quits as a couple? These are the fascinating intersections of family law and personal injury cases that we sometimes encounter. Brian and guest host Stephanie Charlin talk with Ronald Brot. Ron has been a respected family law attorney for over 30 years and is the immediate past president of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. We discuss what happens when you sign up a divorced couple as clients or when married clients split up in the middle of the case. Is the recovery still community property? What happens to the loss of consortium claim? Do you still work the case if they can't agree to both be represented? What does “date of separation” really mean in family law? All these questions and more are answered. The first 100 days of any U.S. Presidential administration is where the incoming president sets his priorities and outlines his vision for the future. In Biden's first 100 days there have been significant steps forward related to immigration law and policy related to reuniting children separated under the Trump administration with their parents, strengthening DACA and protections for asylum seekers and supporting new legislative initiatives. Ethical concerns are of prime importance in immigration law and the panel today discusses some common predatory and deceptive practices by lawyers and non-lawyers alike in the immigration law arena. In these episodes, we talk about… Biden's First 100 Days, Immigration Reform status of current bills, and thoughts about better options. Common ethical issues that come up in Immigration Practice and how we navigate those issues. The risk of unethical practices multiplying if there is comprehensive immigration reform. What people should look out for with attorneys and why to avoid notarios and non-lawyers. What a DOJ Accredited Representative is and how that differs from an Attorney or Notario. Examples of unscrupulous practices by attorneys and how clients can avoid them or what to do if they have already retained someone they believe may be unethical and/or committing ineffective assistance in their case. This week, your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Christine Spagnoli of Greene Broillet & Wheeler LLP (https://www.gbw.law/). Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents Guest Bios: Christine D. Spagnoli: Christine D. Spagnoli is a partner of Greene, Broillet & Wheeler in Santa Monica, specializing in representing plaintiffs in product liability, personal injury and legal malpractice actions. She has obtained many multimillion-dollar verdicts, including the 1999 General Motors case in which a defective fuel tank was found responsible for the burn injuries of two adults and four children. The jury returned with a landmark $4.9 billion verdict. She was co-counsel in the largest personal injury verdict in California, which resulted in a $58 million verdict for a man severely burned by a defective O-ring. She has also spear-headed litigation to protect consumers from injuries and deaths involving 15 passenger vans including: A March 2018 jury verdict of $25.9 million awarded to the family of a church volunteer in New Port Richey, Florida who died in a rollover of a Ford 15 passenger van after the left rear tire tread separated. (Named by National Law Journal as one of the Top 100 Verdicts of 2018) A November 2011 jury verdict of $73 million (including $50 million in punitive damages) awarded to the family of a church volunteer in Sacramento who died in a rollover crash of a Ford 15 passenger van following a tire tread separation. In that case, the jury found that the van's defective design led to the loss of control and that Ford knew about the dangers of tread separations but failed to warn consumers to remove recalled tires that were prone to separation. A July 2010 jury verdict of $5 million for a man injured when the roof of his Ford 15 passenger van crushed in a rollover causing permanent spinal cord injuries. Her achievements cover the full range of personal injury and product liability cases. Recently, Chris served as the Plaintiffs' Co-Lead Counsel in the Federal Express Vehicle Collision Cases resulting from the May 2015 crash involving a FedEx tractor-trailer that crossed a median in Orland, California colliding with a charter bus full of high school students, killing 10 and injuring dozens. The cases settled in October of 2017 on the eve of trial after Chris and her team successfully fought efforts by FedEx to exclude the driver's cell phone records from the trial. She has also served as the Plaintiffs' Liaison Counsel in coordinated cases involving defective Cooper Tires as well as on the California Plaintiffs' Steering Committee for cases involving defective Firestone tires on Ford Explorers. Chris earned widespread recognition for her work as co-lead trial counsel in the 2001 negligence case against Southern California Edison, which resulted in a $21 million verdict for an electrocuted avocado picker. Twenty years ago, the People confirmed that Patricia J. Titus was the "Right Choice for Justice," and elected her as Judge of the Superior Court of California for the County of Los Angeles. With Exodus 18:21 as her foundation, Judge Titus' campaign was set apart from its inception. Because of her character, integrity, professional ability and legacy of community involvement, her candidacy garnered endorsements from a broad cross section of national, state, and local elected officials, pastors, community leaders, judges and attorneys. Since February, 2009, Judge Titus has been assigned to the Inglewood Superior Court where she hears requests for domestic violence and civil harassment restraining orders and presides over the Drug Court. In honor of her 20th year as a judge and as a community service, she has published the book, “F.R.I.E.N.D.S. for LIFE: 7 Keys to Supporting Loved Ones Experiencing Domestic Violence.” Using the word “friends” as an acronym, Judge Titus educates, enlightens and empowers the reader by providing an easy-to-follow guide on how to support the people experiencing domestic abuse in their lives. Judge Titus served as the Judicial Advisor for the California Legislative Black Caucus' Black History exhibit which was on display in the Capitol Rotunda in Sacramento, in San Francisco in the Great Hall of the California Judicial Council and here, in Los Angeles, at the California African American Museum. The exhibit, entitled “And Justice for All,” acknowledged and celebrated the 70th anniversary of the appointment of the first African American Superior Court judge to preside over a California courtroom as well as commemorated the 50th anniversary of the appointment of the first African American Appellate Court justice. Judge Titus has also participated in the Superior Court's “Adoption Day” where she finalized the adoption of over 40 children into loving homes and she has administered the oath of office to numerous public officials and civic leaders. Prior to her election, she enjoyed a 15-year career as a criminal prosecutor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. A top-level felony trial attorney, she established a reputation for excellence in trial and received national media acclaim when she convicted a prominent Ladera Heights businessman of the domestic violence drowning murder of Michael Jackson's former sister-in-law, Delores “Dee Dee” Jackson, who was the former wife of Tito Jackson of the Jackson 5. In the trial of this case, she worked with the Trial Support Department of the DA's Office to draw a female autopsy figure so that the victim's 58 blunt force traumatic injuries could be accurately detailed. The female autopsy form remains in use to date. Prior to her trial, all victims had been depicted using a male autopsy figure. Her successful prosecution of this case was profiled on Court TV and is highlighted in the book, “For the People,” which chronicles the history of high-profile prosecutions in the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office from 1850-2000. While in the DA's office, Judge Titus wrote the first draft of legislation now known as “The Safely Surrendered Baby Law (S.B. 1368).” Under this legislation, within 72-hours of birth, a mother may surrender her newborn child confidentially at an emergency room or fire station without fear of prosecution for child endangerment or abandonment. Judge Titus is a charter and life member of the Association of African American California Judicial Officers, the California Association of Black Lawyers, Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc., and the John M. Langston Bar Association. She is a member of the American Bar Association Judicial Council, California Judges Association, National Bar Association Judicial Council and the National Association of Women Judges. Judge Titus is a past president of Black Women Lawyers of Los Angeles, Inc., a former trustee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and a former board member of the National Bar Association, California Women Lawyers, John M. Langston Bar Association, Multicultural Bar Alliance, and Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. Judge Titus was born and raised in Los Angeles. We are kicking off our celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment with an interview of California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson. Hear the Senator’s no-holds-barred view on the power women bring to elections, what women bring to the table as leaders in business, politics, and the court, the importance of mentorship, and the role of Title IX in competitive sports for women. Senator Jackson, described as passionate, tenacious, and “not winning any congeniality awards in Sacramento,” talks about speaking without fear, amplifying women’s voices, and how women can support one another in positions of influence. What motivates a person to “do good” and why would one choose to do so alongside The Salvation Army? That’s what Craig Darian is sharing on today’s episode. Craig is a longtime executive, producer and businessman in the entertainment industry who has owned and operated several companies. Currently, as Co-Chairman and CEO of Occidental Entertainment Group Holdings, Inc., Craig presides over five operating divisions, including 15 sound stages, and roughly three dozen office buildings with about 1 million sq. ft. of production, editorial and creative office space. As Co-Chairman and CEO of Tricor Entertainment, Inc., Craig has produced films with the likes of Robert DeNiro, Anthony Hopkins, and Kathy Bates. Movies like King Kong, Spider-Man, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pearl Harbor and Meet the Parents. As Chairman and CEO of Darian Management Group, LLC, Craig has represented a wide range of clients doing business in the motion picture, television and music industries. He is a longtime voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, Producers Guild of America, Television Academy and Los Angeles County Bar Association. And he serves on the Board of Directors for the Los Angeles Metro Board of The Salvation Army; Shakespeare Center of LA, where he is president of the board, and St. Anne’s. In fact, in April 2019, he was honored with an Angel Award by St. Anne’s, along with Mayor Eric Garcetti. Yet, as Craig will tell you, he prefers the term “humanitarian” to “philanthropist” so the emphasis is on the recipient rather than the giver because it’s his moral imperative, he believes, to give back.
