Are you worried about how easy it is for your tween, teen, or college-age child to get alcohol, weed, vapes, or “wellness” gummies—and not sure where to even start the conversation? In this episode of Power Your Parenting: Moms of Teens, Colleen talks with Pam Jenkins, Chief Executive Officer of Shatterproof, a national nonprofit dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in the United States. Pam explains how today's substances (like Delta-8, synthetic THC products, and vaping) are more accessible and more potent, why mental health and substance use are so tightly linked, and why clear parental expectations are one of the strongest protective factors. You'll hear practical, hopeful ways to start ongoing conversations, monitor wisely (without turning into the “drug police”), and support your child's mental health so they're less vulnerable to addiction. About Pam Jenkins Pam Jenkins is the Chief Executive Officer of Shatterproof, the leading national nonprofit focused on preventing and treating addiction and supporting long-term recovery. With a lifelong career in public health and health communication, Pam has led large-scale initiatives in areas such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and substance use. She has worked on government campaigns about marijuana, youth alcohol use, and created widely recognized public-health symbols like the red dress for women's heart disease. Today, Pam leads Shatterproof's policy advocacy, prevention programs, and family resources, all aimed at transforming how America understands and addresses addiction. 3 Key Takeaways for Moms Access and potency have changed—your expectations still matter. Teens can easily access highly potent substances (like Delta-8 and other synthetic THC products, vapes, and stronger marijuana) in gas stations, convenience stores, and online. Even so, clear parental disapproval is one of the strongest protections against teen use. Don't assume your kids “just know” how you feel—say it plainly and repeat it often. Mental health and substance use are inseparable. Anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, and social isolation all increase a teen's vulnerability to drugs and alcohol—and drug use can, in turn, worsen or even trigger serious mental health issues like crippling anxiety, depression, and psychosis. Monitoring your child's mood, behavior, friendships, grades, and social connectedness is as important as watching for the substances themselves. Monitor early, talk often, and stay curious—not panicked. Effective prevention starts young: secure medications at home, know your child's friends, stay engaged with school, and watch for changes in behavior or peer groups. Have many short, specific conversations—especially before parties or transitions—using curiosity (“What usually happens at those parties?”) rather than accusations. You don't have to be an expert; you just need to be present, clear about your values, and willing to keep the dialogue going well into their college years. A surprise insertion in the bill to end the federal government shutdown has thrown Native hemp producers into chaos. The language prohibits products like beverages, vapes, and gummies containing THC compounds derived from hemp. Those products were widely available and contribute to a nearly $30 billion industry. Among them is the Lac du Flambeau tribe that produces and sells hemp-derived products. The end of the government shutdown also means the clock is ticking for Native Americans receiving health insurance subsidized by the Affordable Care Act. Without action by Congress, insurance premiums for those people will jump significantly after the start of the New Year. We'll hear about what the possible options are foa the millions of people facing a major hike in insurance costs. GUESTS Angie Wilson (Pit River Tribe), tribal health director for Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Rob Pero (Bad River Tribe), founder and president of the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association and the owner of Canndigenous Candace Thompson (Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Indians), director of cannabis operations for the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Indians Dionne Holmquist (Aztec ancestry), director of biobased solutions at Makoce Agriculture Development

It's the Soapbox Edition of the Adam Dunn Show and the lines are open ! The industry was reminded how fragile and fragmented it is. Slipped into the reopening of the government was an amendment that would clarify the definition of hemp to ban all hemp-derived products containing THC, which were legalized by the 2018 farm bill. Legal hemp products are limited to a total of 0.4 milligrams per container of total THC, or any other cannabinoids with similar effects. Cannabinoids that are synthesized or manufactured outside the plant, like delta-8 THC, are outright banned. There's a lot to unpack here and there's as much good as bad, we hardly need every gas station selling Terp infused prerolls or no oversight in manufacturing of edibles but at the same time we NEED to protect the hemp farmers that are producing cbd for salves , tinctures etc that really help patients in those unregulated states. Joining us in studio we have Brett from @heartandsoilproject seeds and nutrients based here in Colorado Brett has dived deep in the organic pool and puts his $ where his mouth is. Whether is organic farming or raising livestock, Brett gives it his 100%. …….So get that @dabx GO rig charged your @jerome_baker bong Clean with some ice

Congress changed the definition of hemp this week, clarifying the original intent of the 2018 Farm Bill and closing the intoxicating-hemp loophole that enabled a nationwide market of unregulated semi-synthetic THC products. The change caps finished hemp products at 0.4 mg total THC per package, bans synthetic cannabinoids, protects legal CBD and fiber/grain hemp, and gives farmers a one-year implementation window. What does this mean for the hemp industry? How will it affect farmers? How will affect the hemp industry? No episode this week. We had to call a last-minute audible. You may have heard that the bill to restart the federal government contained language that would ban hemp products containing THC, which has sent the entire hemp industry, including many CannMed supporters and contributors into chaos. As a result, the guest we had scheduled for this week's episode asked to reschedule, which we were happy to oblige. But don't worry, we will be back with a new episode next week featuring the always wonderful Bonni Goldstein. She has some exciting details to share about the CannMed 26 Medical Practicum, which is going to feature tons of new topics. So please tune in for that one. In the meantime, I'd like to remind everyone that we are accepting abstracts for the CannMed 26 Summit through the end of the week. The deadline is this Saturday, November 15th. Submit at cannmedevents.com/apply If you have done any novel research in the areas of cannabis science, medicine, cultivation, or safety and testing, we encourage you to submit an abstract for consideration. If selected, not only will you have the opportunity to present your work to the industry leaders in attendance at CannMed 26, but a recording of the presentation will be added to the CannMed Archive and Medicinal Genomics YouTube page for additional exposure after the event. You will also get an invitation from me to appear on the CannMed Coffee Talk podcast, if that's something you're interested in. See you next week!

Because we live in hell, Republicans in the US Senate snuck a provision into the "reopen the government" bill that bans consumable THC products, killing a $30 billion dollar market and deleting as many as 300,000 jobs

Today's Headlines: The government's still shut down—but hey, the Senate finally passed a funding package, which now heads to the House so they can, you know, maybe reopen the country. The deal only funds things until January and gives Democrats a pinky promise to hold a vote on extending Obamacare subsidies next month. Meanwhile, hidden inside the bill is a clause letting senators sue the government for $500,000 if their phone records were searched in the January 6th probe. There's also a proposal to recriminalize THC and hemp-derived products, which would basically nuke a $30 billion industry overnight. The Supreme Court just extended the Trump administration's ability to block SNAP payments through Thursday, so… no rush on feeding people. Elsewhere, the House is finally about to have enough signatures to force a vote on releasing the Epstein files once Adelita Grijalva finally gets sworn in today. But don't get too excited—it probably won't happen until December, if ever. Trump, meanwhile, is asking the Supreme Court to toss out the $5 million he owes E. Jean Carroll, and one of his pardoned Jan. 6 guys just got re-arrested for kidnapping and sexual assault. So that's going great. Overseas, the BBC is melting down after an independent report found major bias issues and a Hamas-adjacent narrator situation. Two execs have already resigned, and Trump's threatening to sue them for $1 billion because a documentary made him look bad (like, worse than usual). And in D.C., plastic surgeons say “Mar-a-Lago face” is the latest cosmetic trend—apparently, looking filler-blind is in. In part one of Red Eye Radio with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley, failed actress-turned-radio host Stephanie Miller a.k.a "Sister Sleaze" literally groveled at the feet of Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett planting a big wet smooch on her sneaker and then gleefully sharing the cringeworthy interaction on social media. The incident happened at an event celebrating Tuesday's passage of Proposition 50 in California which allows pols to redistrict the state and potentially eliminate five Republican congressional seats. Also audio from Jasmine Crockett saying Iranians are "nice people" and won't fly planes into buildings anymore, the liberal mindset of coddling Islamic terrorists and home-grown assassins and the legalization of THC based edibles. Also Kamala Harris thinks she's won the election and Democrats are reluctant to reopen the government. Cannabis is going mainstream in Minnesota in ways that would have been hard to imagine just a few years ago. THC drinks are on store shelves. People talk about edibles and dispensaries as casually as they talk about coffee or craft breweries. For many young adults, cannabis has become part of everyday life — a way to unwind, manage stress or hang out with friends. Using it carries far less stigma than it once did and many people see it as safer than alcohol or tobacco. But even with growing acceptance, questions remain about how cannabis affects young adults, including their mental health, motivation, sleep, and focus. MPR News guest host Catharine Richert explores what research shows — and what we still don't know — about marijuana, health and young people. Guests:Heidi Glesmann is the substance use prevention, education, and recovery unit supervisor at the Minnesota Department of Health. She oversees the Be Cannabis Aware campaign, which is focused on educating youth under age 25, and the adults who support them, about cannabis use. Sylia Wilson is a researcher and associate professor at the Institute of Child Development in the College of Education and Development at the University of Minnesota. Her work looks at how substance use affects young people's health, behavior and development.
