Anonymous Was A Woman Podcast

Chapter 1: Jamila and Astrid dive into the books that first made them feel ‘grown up' and the ones that represented their shifts into adulthood. Regular listeners won't be surprised that Astrid says her coming of age read was Stephen King's 'It'. Jamila brings us back to the world of appropriate teenage reading by reminiscing about Melina Marchetta's 'Looking for Alibrandi'. Chapter 2: Jamila brings Chang Rae Lee's 'My Year Abroad' to the podcast, and she is more blunt than usual about a work of fiction. Chapter 3: And for the first time ever, Astrid recommends a rom-com - Naoise Dolan's 'Exciting Times' (Astrid assures us it is the thinking woman's rom-com). Recommendations: Two each this week! For adults, Jamila recommends 'Dreams from my Father' by Barack Obama. Jamila then refuses to take Astrid seriously when Astrid recommends Anne Rice's 1976 classic, 'Interview with the Vampire'. Both then make recommendations for middle grade readers - Jamila brings '45 and 47 Stella Street' by Elizabeth Honey, and Astrid brings 'The Chronicles of Morrigan Crow' series from Jessica Townsend.

Giles and Robbie are humbled to sit down and chat with the incredible tour de force that is Julie Delpy. Whilst many of us may know and love her from Richard Linklater’s the 'Before' series or her work with Kieslowski on the Three Colours trilogy, we also know her prolific directing career from her debut 'Looking for Jimmy' all the way up to her latest feature 'My Zoe'.   Julie talks frankly about her personal philosophy about film-making, her love of sci-fi and her directing process from writing to production to post - including how she made a name for herself at NYU by turning other students garbage footage into masterpieces in the edit suite.    We cover everything from collaborating with encouraging colleagues like Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater to navigating the nastier side of the film industry and dealing with industry sexism as a female actor making the route from acting to directing.   Finally, we discuss the practical nature of film-making, and how you can stay true to your own vision whilst adding others’ ideas into the mix in the hire wire art of directing.    This week’s sponsor is WeScreenplay Our jury of studio execs, producers, agents, and writers are on the hunt for a script that’s just waiting to be turned into the next big movie. ‘Just because you were brave, doesn't mean you weren't afraid'. Former SAR Paramedic turned Mental Health First Aider Andy Elwood joins me to discuss the importance of recognising your own fragility in preserving and protecting your mental wellbeing. Andy takes us through some of his experiences from his 20 year career on the frontline. He compares the war-like language used against the common enemy that in this battle is COVID, how it's crucial to put yourself first in dangerous situations and the importance of self-care in preserving your health long term. Andy explores some of the self-care techniques everyone can use to look after their mental health in the face of COVID19, from practising a routine similar to our pets to deploying good sleep hygiene and a post-shift checklist, to ensuring you get your mental '5 a day' - including connecting with others, being active and taking a moment to notice and appreciate things around you. Andy deconstructs 'the power of listening'. Andy stresses the importance of providing a non-judgemental outlet for others, which can fundamentally change, and sometimes save, people's lives. Ocasio Cortez Is Dragging 2020 Democrats To Complete Ruin, And CNN's Ratings Prove It. AOC Has led the charge on climate change and the Green new Deal. But to most people she sounds like a fringe alarmist ranting that 'the end is nigh.'Looking at CNN's ratings for the climate change town hall we can see that most people just did not care about what was being said. CNN came in last even though they had so many 2020 democrats on stage. Contrast this with the 2nd debate where CNN had over 10 Millions viewers and we can conclude one of two things. Either people don't care for the democrats or they don't care for climate change.2020 Democrats are taking the lead of far left progressives and pushing for things most people don't care about. They seem to think 5 million followers on twitter means something to the average American, but it doesn't.Trump and the Republicans are absolutely capitalizing on this by shifting the media debate onto "the squad." Yet even though we all know he wants the focus on fringe far leftists many 'resistance' personalities think Trump is just shifting the media focus on accident.it's time for people to realize they are being played.Support the show (http://timcast.com/donate)

Alex gives us an overview of religious and monarchical conflict in pre-modern Spain. Libertarian Socialism/Anarchism's early success in Spain. Franco's counterrevolutionary coup. Orwell's critique of the away-from-the-front left. Why right-wing atrocities are, as a rule, worse than leftist atrocities. Orwell's attempt to join the communists, becoming a Trotskyist, sympathy for Anarchists, and eventual smearing as a Fascist by Stainists. Why both Liberals and Communists downplayed the revolutionary nature of the war to focus on fighting fascism. Orwell's fear for the future of history under totalitarianism. How the US and UK let fascism win in Spain. Why the working class is, long term, fascisms biigest threat. Why there is hardly ever a war in which it doesn't matter who wins. Over the last decade Haigh has established himself as one of the most daring new filmmakers in the industry, writing and directing films 'Weekend', and '45 Years', as well as creating the HBO series 'Looking'. Haigh discusses his early struggles as a filmmaker, why he prioritizes creative control over a higher budget, and what the decline of the “mid-budget film” means for filmmakers at his level. He also talks about why, to this point, he’s only directed his own scripts, what attracted him to ‘Lean on Pete’, and how he approaches working with a great young actor like Charlie Plummer.

Growing up with a name that has resonance around the world - and a father with a towering reputation. That's been the experience of Samia Nkrumah and Noo Saro-Wiwa. We'll hear about the pride and burdens they carry with them, and how their fathers' untimely deaths have shaped their lives. Samia Nkrumah is the daughter of Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah - the man who led his country to independence in 1957, and became an international symbol of freedom as the leader of the first African country to shake off the chains of colonial rule. Samia was just 11 at the time of her father's death, and hadn't seen him for six years, after the family were separated following his overthrow. Still, Samia decided to follow her father into politics and currently chairs the Convention People's Party, a political party in Ghana founded by her father. Noo Saro-Wiwa is the daughter of Ken Saro-Wiwa, the Nigerian writer and environmental activist who was killed in 1995 after leading peaceful protests against the oil industry in his home region of Ogoniland. Noo was a 19-year-old student at the time of his death. She went on to become a journalist and author based in the UK - she has written an account of her own journey around Nigeria called 'Looking for Transwonderland'. It may not be well-known but, according to the National Eye Institute, May is Healthy Vision Month. We thought we would help spread the word and enjoy some good music at the same time. Here's what the National Eye Institute wants to tell you: "Millions of people living in the United States have undetected vision problems, eye diseases, and conditions. HVM is designed to elevate vision as a health priority for the Nation by promoting the importance of early detection and treatment, as well as the use of proper eye safety practices, in preventing vision loss and blindness. One of the most important things people can do to protect their vision is to schedule a comprehensive dilated eye exam. In this painless procedure, an eye care professional examines the eyes to look for common vision problems and eye diseases, many of which have no early warning signs. A comprehensive dilated eye exam can detect eye diseases and conditions in their early stages, before vision loss occurs. Early detection and treatment can help to save your sight." With that said, we thought we'd celebrate Healthy Vision Month by spinning some songs that refer, in the title, to sight/vision is some form. Here we go. After deciding on the title for this episode, Chris' first choice came very easily. From 1977's Draw the Line album, we kick things off with Aerosmith performing 'Sight for Sore Eyes.' Aaron starts his sight-related picks with a track from the oft-overlooked 1995 release from Dokken; Dysfunctional. This album marked the return of George Lynch. We spin the opening track, 'Inside Looking Out.' Electric Six Chris decided to do some digging in research for this episode. A nugget was found in the vast space that is youtube with his choice of the track 'Night Vision' off Electric Six's 2005 release Switzerland. Aaron's next pick is 'Eyes of a Strager.' Wait, before you think it's the well-known Queensryche track, think again. This great sing comes from the appropriately-titled Visual Lies album from Lizzy Borden and is a great addition to the show. We return from break one with a selection from Motley Crue's debut album Too Fast for Love. While filled with lots of great hook-y songs, Too Fast....sports one track that fits in with our vision-themed show as we spin 'Starry Eyes.' Up next is Aaron's choice of a bonus track from Ozzy Osbourne's iconic Blizzard of Oz release. Featuring some seering Randy Rhoads guitar work, 'You Lookin' at Me, Lookin' at You' is a testimony to the strength of material being created by the gone-too-soon guitarist and the Prince of Darkness. Chris keeps the Crazy Train on track as we segue into a double-dose of Ozzy with his choice of 'Looking for Tomorrow' from the classic Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album from 1973. One band that doesn't get nearly the amount of recognition it deserves is Turbonegro. We try to alleviate that problem with Aaron's choice of 'If You See Kaye' from their Party Animals album. We close out the show with Chris' choice of a KISS track that appeared on two different albums in the band's catalog with different personnel. 'See You in Your Dreams' was selected from Rock and Roll Over and features some powerful drumming from Peter Criss and a great solo from Ace Frehley. Playing things out this week is a fantastic cover of a sight-related classic that's all about focus. Aaron's choice of At Vance's version of 'Eye of the Tiger' is a motivating way to finish things off. Buy Music! In this talk I will look at the role of observational scrupulosity in the astronomical manuscripts of Thomas Harriot (1560-1621) relating to his telescopic observations of the moon, sun-spots, the moons of Jupiter and the 1618 comet. I will reflect on his interest in the observations of Tycho Brahe, and Brahe’s attempts to make his observations and measurements more accurate (particularly his computational tables regarding the ‘leges refractionum’ which aimed to quantify the differences between the real and apparent positions of celestial objects). I will pay particular attention to Harriot’s unpublished (and unfinished) treatise ‘Thomae Harrioti Collectio et comparatio quorundam obseruationum quae putabuntur accuratissimae, quia factae magnis instrumentis et a praestantibus Mathematicis: vt inde iudicium fiat de obseruationum certitudine in genere; et an vlla praestare possit ad minutum’ [By Thomas Harriot. A Collection and Comparison of certain observations, which are considered to be most accurate, because they were made using large instruments and by famous Mathematicians: so that from hence a judgement might be made of the certainty of observations in general; and whether any of them can be done better to the minute] and the criticisms which Harriot offers of the astronomical observations of Tycho and his colleagues, and aim to show the role which accurate computation played in his own astronomical work.
