LES MISERABLES COMPOSER: Claude-Michel Schonberg LYRICIST: Herbert Kretzmer BOOK: Alain Boublil, Claude-Michele Schonberg, Jean-Marc Natel SOURCE: Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables (1862) DIRECTOR: Trevor Nunn and John Caird CHOREOGRAPHER: Trevor Nunn and John Caird PRINCIPLE CAST: Randy Graff (Fantine), Terrence Mann (Javert), Colm Wilkinson (Jean Valjean) OPENING DATE: Mar 12, 1987 CLOSING DATE: May 18, 2003 PERFORMANCES: 6,680 SYNOPSIS: Jean Valjean is a convicted thief who attempts to rebuild his life with a new family while being mercilessly hunted by the pious Inspector Javert. As these two men battle for their souls, the Paris streets are littered with a political revolution that will forever alter the lives of these two men. Robert Meffe traces the development of Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, and Herbert Kretzmer's epic mega-musical, Les Misérables through inception and how it created the template for musicals that would successfully fuse their scores with popular musical forms. Significantly, the creative team of Trevor Nunn and John Napier struggled to adapt the French novel's storyline in a way that would resonate with a contemporary British audience both in pacing and the application of universal themes. The show's success inspired a fleet of musicals whose plots waxed epic including The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, and Titanic. "When did you first see a trans character in performance?" "Why is there such a lack of inclusion of trans performers in theatre?" "How do we hold institutions who have failed and done harm accountable?" "How can we grow?"On this episode, I interview singer, actress, producer, director, writer, activist, and winner of the Human Rights Campaign Visibility award in January of 2020, Aneesh Sheth (she/her). Aneesh shares how her first exposure to queerness was when a sari (a garment from the Indian subcontinent traditionally worn by women) was put on her at a young age, and she recalls feeling very comfortable in it. She also shares how her exposure to Hijra culture made an impression on her as to how society viewed those outside of the gender binary. It was then through her journey of working on the role of Sweetie in the musical Bombay Dreams that she learned about her own gender identity and also how trans characters and actors were viewed in theatrical spaces. Aneesh and I discuss how the theatre has progressed in terms of inclusion, how we can hold institutions accountable for making sure to do this work, the impact this past year has had on artists, and advice for trans and gender non-conforming artists who feel stifled by the inaccessible theatrical industry. We also discuss: How trans characters have developed in theatre and why there is such little progressHow to be inclusive of trans, gender non-conforming, actors with disabilities, and many other minorities in revivals of shows. How to successfully develop shows with trans characters in them. The issue of accessibility in theatre...and much more.Follow Aneesh:InstagramWebsiteResources for Further Learning:An Open Letter: A Statement to the Public Theatre by Aneesh ShethAneesh Sheth receives HRC's Visibility AwardOrganization of the Week: The Next Generation ProjectLearnDonateShow Produced by Nick EiblerCo-Produced/Edited by Addison McKissackTheme Song written by Matt Gregory, Colin Egan, and Mike Hubbard Produced by Colin Egan and Mike HubbardLogo Design by David Pavón
Pallavi Sharda knows what chasing your dreams is all about. Growing up in Melbourne Australia, she knew from a very young age she wanted to become a Bollywood actress. We talk about making the decision to move to India to fulfill her dreams of working in Bollywood, her biggest takeaways from her time there and what she learned about herself, what she would tell other young women who want to make their mark on the world's largest film industry, and her relationship to Bollywood now.She discusses why there is still a lack of diversity and representation for South Asian women in the film industry, how being an Indian-Australian forced her to redefine herself time and time again, and the reason coming back home to Melbourne helped reclaim her voice and identity. An honors graduate from the University of Melbourne Law, Arts and Languages schools, Pallavi is an advocate for India-Australia relations and the strengthening of intercultural links between the two countries. She was named on the list of forty most influential Asian-Australians at the inaugural Asian-Australian Leadership Summit. Her film credits include Oscar nominated film Lion (2016), Bollywood films Begum Jaan (2017) and Hawaizaada (2015), and comedy Australian film Save Your Legs! (2012). She has worked in Hindi films like My Name Is Khan, Dus Tola, and Besharam. This year, she starred in Tom Jerry and The One, now streaming on Netflix. She also has two feature films coming out in 2022- Black Site and Wedding Season.
This week our guest is the INCREDIBLE Aneesh Sheth. Fun fact: Nikki interviewed Aneesh back in 2019 for Brown Girl Magazine. The interview was short but poignant. They touched on topics of identity and representation, and the interview left a mark as one of our favorites to publish. It gave us so much joy to delve further into those topics with Aneesh and more, including her time as Sweetie in the Broadway National Tour of "Bombay Dreams," Gillian in "Jessica Jones" (Netflix) and her activism and philanthropy work with the Trevor Project and the Sappho Project. Plus bonus: we were able to help her find her new alter ego name... and it's a GOOD one.

Playing on national tours for 25 years in shows such as White Christmas, Bombay Dreams, High School Musical, Miss Saigon, and more including a Japanese tour of Rent should all be enough to discuss in one episode. That's a full career as a touring percussionist with some major shows. However, he's also worked extensively as an actor/singer, a choreographer (or "moveography" as he calls it) and director, an AEA certified Stage Manager. But since all of that was on hiatus, he started his own podcast network and is the creator and host of two sports podcasts: Loyal Littles Podcast and The Upset Special. He's an NFL fan, and I questioned him in advance about who he had picked for the Super Bowl. We now know that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Kansas City Chiefs. How did Louis do on his picks? Why does he do so much? It's because of his 3-word life statement, "Just keep working." That he does!Follow the podcast on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter @LifeInThePitPod. Visit www.davidlanemusic.com/podcast for more info or to send feedback regarding the podcast.
