Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. This week, the pair speaks about two new movies, the feature film, "Jay Kelly," and the short documentary "Carol & Joy." But first, we hear in this week’s “Jangle” segment, an update on a story from last week regarding one of the Holocaust survivors featured in the film, "Eleanor the Great," Sami Steigmann, who was asked not to speak at a Brooklyn middle school about antisemitism due to his pro-Israel views. Our second Jangle involves the impending sale of Warner Bros Studio. Hoffman has some passionate thoughts. We then speak about "Jay Kelly," a 2025 comedy-drama directed by Noah Baumbach and written by Baumbach and Emily Mortimer. For Borschel-Dan, it was a screening in two sleepy parts that ended with a "meh" rating. Hoffman was (slightly) kinder. Both were united in their appreciation for the documentary, "Carol & Joy," directed by Nathan Silver and starring actress Carol Kane and her 98-year-old mother, Joy Kane. It is a delight of a film and... executive produced by a The Reel Schmooze regular, Natalie Portman. Hear which film got a seal of approval on this week's The Reel Schmooze. The Reel Schmooze is produced by the PodWaves and can be found wherever you get your podcasts. They kick things off with dating horror stories—including Jared's epic backwards fall off a patio chair that took out a sandwich board and a heat lamp. The conversation dives into why so many dates feel like obligations instead of opportunities. Jared and Jordana explain the "sure, I'll go" trap—how settling for matches that are just "fine" leads to boring dates and dating burnout. They emphasize trusting your gut and only going on dates when you're genuinely excited, not just because you feel like you should. They tackle dating app fatigue, discussing why some people thrive on apps while others find them soul-crushing. The key insight: it's about how you use them. Treating apps like a binge-worthy Netflix show instead of something you check in on intentionally (like one hour a week) kills the fun and makes everything feel transactional. The episode includes a listener question about a toxic long-distance relationship where a 22-year-old woman keeps breaking up and getting back together with an insecure boyfriend who constantly asks "are you still into me?" Jared and Jordana break down why this is a mismatch built on drama rather than trust, why her friends are right to be concerned, and how to choose which friends to actually listen to when it comes to relationship advice. They wrap with quickfire questions about turn-ons, turn-offs, what makes good sex, and the number one thing everyone should know: just because the sex is good doesn't mean the relationship is good. MUSICRoger Daltrey of The Who is now SIR Roger Daltrey. He was knighted by Prince William at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. It's in recognition of not only his musical achievements, but also his charity work. Here he is on the award, and what his younger self and band would've thought back in the day. https://consequence.net/2025/12/sir-roger-daltrey-knighted/ Sharon Osbourne has given her first interview since the death of her husband Ozzy this past July.Appearing Wednesday on the British TV show Piers Morgan Uncensored, hosted by her longtime friend, she opened up about his health struggles, doing his final show this past July 5th in Birmingham, England, their last conversations and much more. You can watch the show on YouTube, and here are a few excerpts:Sharon Osbourne on the last two weeks of Ozzy's life. OC:...in seven years. :27 [Courtesy of Piers Morgan Uncensored]"He was so happy Piers afterwards. And he kept looking at the papers and he goes to me, 'I never knew so many people like me.' But that was the way he was. I mean, he knew he was famous, but not to the amount that people loved him. It's a whole different thing. And he was just so happy. Happier than we'd seen him in seven years."Sharon Osbourne on dreams Ozzy was having the last week of his life. OC:...he was ready. :26 [Courtesy of Piers Morgan Uncensored]"He was having dreams the last week of his life. He was seeing people that he never knew. I said, 'Well, what kind of people?' He goes, 'All different people. And I just keep walking and walking and I'm seeing all these different people every night. And I go back there and I'm looking at these people and they're looking at me and nobody's talking.' And he he knew. He was ready." Sharon also talked about the first time she and Ozzy met, when they fell in love, how she will never want to get married again, how if she didn't have kids she would have killed herself when he died, and the thing she misses most is holding his hand.On a lighter note, she also talked about how she wanted to get back at Roger Waters for the negative things he said about Ozzy after he died. And that was by sending him a Tiffany box filled with feces, which she used to do to critics who wrote negative reviews about Ozzy's shows without being there. When she did, it was her infant son Jack's poop that would be used. She ultimately decided against it, saying, “Even that is a waste, to send [crap] to him. It's a waste because he's really insignificant. But I just thought, anybody that passes has a family… you don't do that.” (Sharon's not the first musician's wife to do that. Paul and Linda McCartney sent some of their daughter Stella's poop to a journalist who earned their trust, then betrayed them.)Going forward, Sharon says she's continuing to work on an Ozzy bio-pic and that she knows who she wants to play him. When asked if it was Yunglbud she didn't confirm nor deny.https://youtu.be/aaLMsEJKZEQ Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged Martin D-18E has been donated to the Royal College of Music London by Peter Freedman, who paid $6,010,000 for it at an auction in 2020. So . . . Christmas movie!!!6. "Trading Places" (1983). There's a Christmas party, and Dan Aykroyd as a drunken Santa waving a handgun. But it doesn't end on December 25th. If it's a Christmas movie, then it also qualifies as a New Year's movie.7. "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (2005). This one takes place during the Christmas season in L.A. And it was released in November.8. "Edward Scissorhands" (1990). Kind of a no-brainer.9. "Lethal Weapon" (1987). Another one of those action movies that HAPPENS to take place around Christmas.10. "Rocky" (1976). This might be the greatest American holiday film of all time, because it includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. And also punching.11. "Hook" (1991). What exactly is the Federal Trade Commission, and why was destroying it a top priority for Project 2025? We then take a closer look at this week's oral arguments in Trump v. Opponents of UFO/UAP transparency have worked overtime to make life miserable for members of Congress who have demanded answers and honesty. Those House members who have been at the forefront of efforts to get straight answers about hidden programs and unauthorized spending have encountered fierce opposition, warnings to back off, and a brick wall of outrageous secrecy from agencies they are constitutionally authorized to oversee. Is the all-too-brief era of public hearings into UFO truth finished? Those murky agencies - the architects of the secrecy - certainly hope so. Three of the principal champions for UAP transparency in the House admit that more hearings into UFO matters are unlikely to produce the breakthroughs the public expects. But if future hearings are off the table, what's next? In this extraordinary episode of WEAPONIZED, Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp are honored to speak with three transparency warriors - Representatives Anna Paulina Luna, Tim Burchett, and Eric Burlison - to hear about the obstacles they've faced, why they've been thwarted in their efforts to speak with first-hand witnesses, surreptitious intimidation tactics, veiled threats, the possibility of presidential disclosure, and their under-the-radar plans for moving forward. You'll be staggered to know that a certain plaza in LA gets a mention. The team also talk about the Golden Globe nominations and the potential Netflix acquisition of Warner Bros. The Netflix documentary "Sean Combs: The Reckoning" presents some of the most damning allegations ever made against the disgraced music mogul — and the most explosive involve two murders that changed hip-hop forever. In this breakdown, we examine the documentary's claims about Diddy's alleged role in the deaths of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., including never-before-heard audio from Keefe D's 2008 proffer session where he alleges Combs offered a million-dollar bounty on Tupac and Suge Knight. We walk through the testimony of Bad Boy co-founder Kirk Burrowes, who kept detailed journals during his years at the label and now claims Combs was "insanely jealous" of Biggie and Tupac's friendship.  Burrowes alleges Combs cancelled Biggie's London trip and kept him in Los Angeles despite the danger — and that after Biggie was killed, Combs allegedly tried to charge the funeral costs back to the dead rapper's estate. We also cover the response from Biggie's estate manager Wayne Barrow, who denies the funeral allegation entirely. The documentary raises a disturbing question: did Combs lose a friend, or build an empire on tragedy? Sean Combs has denied all involvement in both murders and has never been charged. Keefe D's trial is scheduled for 2026. This is Crime Weekly's full breakdown of the allegations, the evidence, and what it all means. #Diddy #SeanCombs #TheReckoning #Tupac #NotoriousBIG #Biggie #CrimeWeekly #TrueCrime #Netflix #HipHop Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? On this week's episode, I'm joined by Vulture's Nicholas Quah to discuss his and Savannah Salazar's piece on what Netflix might do with Warner Bros.'s tie-ins with Universal Studios and Six Flags, and then expanded the conversation to consider the vast universe of WB's entanglements. The studio also owns an enormous video game company, the second-biggest comic book company in DC Comics, and all sorts of other stuff. What is Netflix going to do with all these disparate pieces? Who knows! But we do some rank speculation.
