Rouzbeh Yassini-Fard, founder of LANcity, author of The Accidental Network, and widely known as the “father of the cable modem”, shares the story of how broadband was built and the lessons it offers for today's leaders navigating AI and emerging technologies.   Arriving in the U.S. with $750 in savings, Yassini-Fard envisioned carrying “voice, data and video… over one cable instead of two” at a time when few believed homes would ever need to be connected. Over nine years, with just 13 employees and seven consultants, he built a working product, proved its reliability, and persuaded the cable industry to adopt it. By 1996, his team had driven device costs from $8,000 down to under $300 and helped create DOCSIS, the global broadband standard, released royalty-free to speed adoption.   Reflecting on today's tech landscape, he cautions: “It's not just really money… you need more than that. It's a proven prototype and a product that actually does the talking.” Valuations without execution, he warns, will accelerate failure.   Key lessons include: Prototype before scale: Capital is wasted without demonstrable performance in real environments. Treat infrastructure as strategy: Broadband enabled Silicon Valley, Netflix, telehealth, and remote work; leaders must model today's energy, compute, and connectivity constraints when sizing AI opportunities. Open standards matter: Royalty-free interoperability can turn a niche idea into an industry platform. Execution trumps valuation: LANcity beat Motorola and Intel with disciplined engineering, resilient supply chains, and relentless customer trials. Anchor to customer economics: Early users became advocates because the modem delivered day-to-day value. This week, we continue our Mike Flanagan Rewind series with Episode 6 of The Haunting of Bly Manor.  Flashbacks reveal Henry's affair with Charlotte, his brother Dominic's wife—and the shocking truth that he is Flora's biological father. A new true crime documentary has just been released on Netflix titled, ‘Unknown Number.' The twist at the end is so unexpected and shocking that people start making TikToks of their friends and family's reactions. The premise: Lauryn and Owen are thirteen year olds navigating a middle school romance until they get put into a group chat with an unknown third number. The texts start off silly. “Best day ever! Only one of you got voted on homecoming court – this is epic! LMAO!” They quickly escalate in severity and occurrence; sometimes up to 50 harassing text messages a day for roughly two years. “Owen loves me and I will always be the girl he loves. He will be with me while your lonely ugly ass is alone. I fucking own Owens dick. Cry more you fucking jealous bitch.” Who is sending these messages? Why do they want Lauryn and Owen to break up so badly? So, you want to go on a cruise. What could go wrong? After listening or watching today’s episode, you might think twice, for good reasons. When Jamie Barnett said goodbye to her daughter, Ashley, in 2005, who was going on a three-day cruise with her boyfriend and two other couples to Mexico, she never dreamt that it would be the last time she would see her daughter alive. What was supposed to be a birthday celebration resulted in the death of Ashley due to illegal activities on board the ship, gross negligence from the staff of the ship, and subpar medical attention aboard the cruise ship. My guest on the show today, Jamie Barnett, has turned grief and frustration from dealing with the cruise industry, government officials, and the FBI, into advocacy and hope. Jamie Barnett is the president of the International Cruise Victims (ICV) organization and became an advocate for cruise ship safety after her 24-year-old daughter, Ashley Barnett, died on a cruise in 2005 due to gross negligence by the cruise line. Her advocacy work was instrumental in the passage of the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act of 2010, and she continues to fight for stricter regulations of cruise vessels to ensure the safety of their passengers. Jamie appeared in the Netflix docuseries "Amy Bradley is Missing," further highlighting the dangers on cruise ships by drawing parallels between her daughter's death and the disappearance of Amy Bradley in 1998 As a dad and grandpa, this episode hit home. I can’t imagine what Jamie went through and continues to go through!
