¿Has visto el documental biográfico “Quincy, A Life Beyond Measure”? There have been many classic films turned into TV shows with less-than-stellar results. Does anyone remember the “Casablanca" TV show on ABC with Starsky & Hutch star DAVID SOUL filling in for HUMPHREY BOGART? Don't worry, nobody else does either! Felicia is joined by Greg Kleinschmidt to discuss Brian De Palma's tale of a struggling actor who witnessed a murder from afar, in Body Double (1984). We chat about De Palma's fascination who characters who spy on others and how easy it is for them to become embroiled in a murder case. We also talk about the visual tricks De Palma uses to lead the audience astray and always keep them guessing. Body Double is my favourite De Palma, it's a film that hits every single button for me, from the film within a film, to the Frankie Goes to Hollywood music video, and a 360 degree makeout scene that has yet to be rivalled. This film is De Palma's true essence. Send us your thoughts on the episode - what did you think of the films within the film? Welcome to New Hollywood, listeners! The Academy goes for tense, racially charged In The Heat of the Night, where Sidney Poitier announces "They call me Mr. Tibbs" and helps a hick southern sheriff solve a murder. It's gripping, it's powerful, it brings up some sad thoughts for Erin, Claire, and Dan in the wake of recent events in Canada. Then on the lighter side, Dustin Hoffman makes his AVA debut in The Graduate, a blend of bleak and very funny that your co-hosts fall for partially because the characters are very unlikable. The Hayes Code is dead, the Studio Bosses have fallen, and boundaries get pushed as the New Hollywood era begins! "Killin' generals could get to be a habit with me." - The Dirty Dozen The year 1967 saw the release of such recognized classics as Bonnie & Clyde, The Graduate, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, Cool Hand Luke and In The Heat of the Night. But a plucky, oddball, unconventional and controversial war movie with lousy reviews outgrossed them all. The Dirty Dozen, with its incredible ensemble of players portraying angry criminals and misfits, forced into a suicide mission by people in power, resonated with audiences living through political turmoil, societal change, and the escalation of the Vietnam War. The film was not only an unanticipated sleeper hit, but went on to garner four Academy Awards, and is now regarded as one of the most popular WWII movies of all time. KILLIN' GENERALS: The Making of The Dirty Dozen, the Most Iconic WWII Movie of All Time (on-sale April 25, 2023) takes its name from a line in the film. Released in 1967 and directed by Robert Aldrich, the film has resonating themes of redemption, loyalty, hypocrisy, competition, brutality, antiauthoritarianism, and nonconformity, in a killer plot performed by an all star cast. Its star power included Donald Sutherland, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, George Kennedy, football player-turned-actor Jim Brown, and John Cassavetes, who would go on to win an Academy Award. It also transformed Lee Marvin's career, moving from supporting character to major movie star. While film critics saw it as hopelessly flawed and even immoral, audiences ate it up - and today it's considered a classic and in the pantheon of great war movies.

Out The Lights"/ (cara B "Helpless"). Acto seguido lanzaron su primer álbum, Lightning To The Nations. El álbum contenía 7 temas, incluyendo los clásicos "Am I Evil?", "The Prince" y "Sucking My Love". El siguiente sencillo de la banda se llamó "Sweet and Innocent", con temas que ya aparecían en Lightning To The Nations, y que incluía un nuevo título en la cara reversa: "Streets of Gold". A continuación publicaron The Diamond Lights 12, un EP con temas ya conocidos como "It's Electric" y otros tres nuevos, "We Won't Be Back", "The Diamond Light" y "I Don't Got". Después, en 1981, la banda firmó con el sello MCA, bajo auspicios se lanzó el EP Four Cuts que contenía temas como "Call Me", "Trick or Treat", "Dead Reckoning" y una nueva versión de "Shoot Out The Lights". Más tarde llega un nuevo single, "In The Heat of The Night", poco antes de ser publicado su segundo álbum, Borrowed Time. En 1992 editaban el álbum en directo The Friday Night Rock Show Sesions/ Live at Reading. Finalmente publicaron su sexto álbum, What's In Your Head?, en 2007. Pagina Oficial: https://www.diamondheadofficial.com/

The Worthy boys are investigating the streets of Sparta, Mississippi to discover who murdered a local wealthy businessman as we're discussing In the Heat of the Night. The racially fueled film stars Sidney Poitier as a Philadelphia Detective stuck outside of his jurisdiction and Rod Steiger as the local racist police chief in charge of the murder case. Tune in to hear us analyze the shocking moments that stunned American audiences of 1967; moments like when our Black protagonist, Detective Tibbs slaps a white man marking a first in Hollywood American cinema! The 1967 Oscars were originally scheduled for April 8th but the awards were postponed to two days later due to the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. This travesty would continue to spark debates over the civil rights movement and films like In The Heat of the Night were used as a shining example of how to examine this American issue. Is In the Heat of the Night worthy of the Best Picture award of 1967? Tell us how we're wrong at worthysubmissions@gmail.com
Most know him for his role as officer Randy Goode on the hit TV show In The Heat of the Night, but Randall Franks is very clear about how he was able to become a part of one of the most popular shows on TV at that time. He said his opportunities have been God-given. Exercising humility, no matter how small the role or task, has allowed him to continue his greatest purpose, being a servant of God and reflecting that in his daily life. He reminds us that God has something for everyone to do. Every call is a chance to share whose you are. Tune into this episode to hear more.
Maybe you saw the reunion of Woody Harrelson, Wesley Snipes and Rosie Perez at the Oscars…it was the biggest thing that happened that night…the reason they got together was because White Men Can't Jump just turned 30 years old.Our good buddies Niko Del Rey and Jules Cruz from The Filharmonic have just started a basketball podcast called Full Court Fresh. We told them to pick a basketball movie that's having an anniversary and we could do a little cross promotion and that's how we decided on White Men Can't Jump. Through the new year we lost two screen legends. To celebrate their unique and significant legacies in Hollywood and American culture, we are focusing on a film for each of them. First we have the rom-com The Proposal featuring cute couple Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, but most importantly Betty White infusing the typically boring grandma character with her stunning wit and charm. Then we discuss what Sidney Poitier often called his favorite film he's ever done, the noir crime meets race commentary thriller In The Heat of The Night. Enjoy!
Vincent and Len share their thoughts on the legacy and the films of Sidney Poitier, who passed away at the age of 94 on Jan 6th 2022. The Men of Micheaux talk about his iconic roles in films such as In The Heat of The Night, A Raisin in The Sun, his less popular yet no less poignant work in Paris Blues, Brother John and A Warm December, his comedic turns with Bill Cosby and Harry Belafonte, and evenhis 'efforts' in career missteps like The Long Ship and Ghost Dad. Saturday, January 8th 9:00PM Eastern/ 6:00PM Pacific The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and – hopefully – promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS The first full week of 2022, saw lots of White people get extra tacky (and deceptive) with the remembrances of the 2021 January 6th, Terrorism. Most of the Whites who participated in this barbaric act have not been prosecuted. Whites wasted a lot of this week insisting last year's savagery will not be repeated. Speaking of White brutes, all three White Terrorists who participated in the murder of Ahmaud Arbery were sentenced to life in prison. Two of the three will have no possibility of parole. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Holmes was found guilty of fraud for her billion dollar Silicon Valley scam. The blue eyed White Woman could be sentenced to decades for her high level looting. And just as the new year began, legendary actor and Victim of White Supremacy, Sidney Poitier died at the age of 94. He's credited with being the first black actor White people chose to give an Academy Award, and many of his films (Raisin in the Sun, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, In The Heat of The Night) directly address White Supremacy/Racism. Sidney Poitier changed America's view of black men. And he changed Hollywood. The star of “Guess Who's Coming to Dinner,” “The Defiant Ones,” and “In The Heat of the Night” became, in 1964, the first African-American to win an Academy Award (for “Lillies of the Field”). He was a leading man and box office sensation throughout the 1950's and 60's, portraying a huge array of characters with a dignity, courage and humanity that was radical for its time. Sidney Poitier died on Thursday, January 6th, at the age of 94. In his honor, we are reposting this episode from 2016. In it, Poitier talks about his remarkable life, and he describes how his childhood on a tiny island in the Bahamas made all the difference in his view of himself, and in the choices he made throughout his career as an actor.

It was on January 12th. 1971 -- 50 years ago -- that situation comedy changed in a big way, with the premiere of a controversial show called All in the Family. At the center of the show was an irascible middle-aged blue collar worker named Archie Bunker. What made Archie so controversial, then and now, was how utterly unapologetic he was for his politically incorrect views. Cast in the role of Archie Bunker was veteran actor Carroll O'Connor, who went on not only to win 4 Emmys as Archie but later starred in the series In The Heat of Tthe Night. In 1998 O'Connor wrote A a memoir, and that's when I got to meet and interview him. TRIGGER WARNING: This interview that you're about to hear includes talks about O'Connor's adult son's drug abuse and suicide.
Book Vs Movie: Harold and Maude The Colin Higgins Story & the Direction of Hal Ashby The Margos want to sing out! Today’s special episode is based on the novelization of a screenplay by the talented Colin Higgins who manages to good luck his way into having his first attempt at a screenplay produced by Paramount in 1971. Before that, he was an American-Australian who traveled around the globe trying to figure out how to turn his passion for writing into a career. (He would go on to write & direct 9 to 5!) Harold and Maude became the second film of legendary director Hal Ashby who won an Oscar for editing In The Heat of the Night in 1967 and was eager for the challenge of creating a movie about peace and love. The film stars Bud Cort as Harold Chason, a young, lonely man obsessed with death and pranks his stiff, upper-crust mother (played by Vivian Pickles) by staging phony suicides. (This is a very dark comedy, by the way!) One of his hobbies is attending funerals for strangers where he meets his soulmate--Maude Chardin. Maude is 79 years old and lives her life to the fullest. Together they discover the glories of planting trees, stealing cars, music, and fighting the good fight. Academy Award-winning actress Ruth Gordon plays Maude and this ultimately uplifting film has been a cult favorite since its release in 1971 (though it was trashed by the critics at the time.) We talk about the journey of Harold and Maude from the script stage to the inclusion of Cat Stevens’s music which makes the whole movie feel like a wonderful daydream. We also want to give a special shout-out to the Hal documentary directed by Amy Scott and the book Hal Ashby and the Making of Harold and Maude by James A. Davidson which were essential to our research. Listen to this episode to hear us talk about the book & movie and decide which we like better. In this ep the Margos discuss: The intriguing lives of Colin Higgins and Hal Ashby Behind the scenes trivia about the filming of the movie in the Bay Area How the music of Cat Stevens is its own character in the story The controversial nature of the May December romance between the leads The cast: Bud Cort (Harold,) Ruth Gordon (Maude,) Vivian Pickles (Mrs. Chasen,) Cyril Cusack (Glaucus,) Charles Tyner (Uncle Victor,) Eric Christmas (Priest,) George Wood (Psychiatrist,) Ellen Geer (Sunshine Dore,) Judy Engles (Candy,) Tom Skerritt (credited as “M. Patricia Mae Giraldo sounds like a pretty cool name for a performer. You know her as Pat Benatar. Let’s take a deep dive in to the career of one of the best female rockers of our time: Speaking of the name Benatar, it’s actually not a stage name. Pat was married briefly to a GI named Dennis Benatar, and decided to keep the name So where did her current married name Giraldo come from? She married her guitarist and musical director Neil Giraldo in 1982 Benatar is one of the few female rockers ever to be accepted to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. But she rebelled, and never attended Like most of her rock counterparts, she started humble, singing nights and weekends in bands while holding down jobs as a bank teller, and waitressing gigs Out of the 12 studio albums she has produced, 6 of them went Platinum, including her debut album In The Heat of the Night Though the height of her success happened in the 80s, Benatar got her start in the 70s singing regularly in the New York City area, where she was discovered at the Catch A Rising Star club (singing a Judy Garland song at 3am) and signed by Chrysalis Records If you’ve gone to any of Benatar’s shows, you know she’s a huge Zeppelin fan. She often closes her live shows with a reggae version of Stairway to Heaven Songs like Crimes of Passion, Fire and Ice, Shadows of the Night, and Love is a Battlefield earned her a 4-peat of Grammy awards from 1980 to 1983 Pat Benatar remains quite active in her music career, continuing to tour, put on live shows, and writing new material

We'll be taking a surprisingly long detour into In The Heat of the Night, having some unsettling realizations about Timon and Pumba, talking about the use of color and body language to tell stories, and throwing out a few fanfic-y suggestions for the "Live Action" Lion King (2019).
Only in the 70's could a beefy, drawling television character actor change gears and morph into not only an action hero, but even some measure of sex symbol to an audience bedazzled by an aging, Vegas Elvis and the good humored down home charm of Burt Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson... After nearly a decade toiling away in bit parts on series from Honey West and Gunsmoke to the Mod Squad to Mission Impossible, Texan good ol' boy Joe Don Baker brought a likeably rootsy appeal to his roles, from the corn pone Death Wishisms of breakthrough hit Walking Tall to roles with kung fu specialist Robert Clouse (Golden Needles), as hard boiled, vaguely noiresque detectives (Mitchell, Speedtrap), in outright horror films (The Pack) and as crusty authority figures (To Kill a Cop, Power), sometimes even in comedies (Fletch, Joysticks, Leonard Part 6)! Eventually landing a recurring role in both the Dalton and Brosnan runs of the James Bond franchise, he'd spend later years filling in for Carroll O' Connor on In The Heat of the Night and working artsy critical faves like Cape Fear and Reality Bites, even dropping in for a spot in the late 90's comedy smash Mars Attacks! Remembered more these days for being sent up mercilessly in no less than two memorable episodes of MST3K, join us as we delve deep into the Deep South, braving those crawdads, polk salad, chitlins and greens for some tasty down home cinema, to talk the films of the inimitable Joe Don Baker, only here on Weird Scenes! Ryan and Dave trip balls while sober as they watch Ken Russell's influential cult classic horror film about a Harvard scientist's descent into psychedelic regression. Worthy to be mentioned in the same body-horror conversation as the best of old-school Cronenberg (indeed, "The Fly" seemed to have taken some of its cues from this movie), the pre-CG special effects, Paddy Chayevsky's underlying story, and William Hurt's debut film performance are all reasons to check this out if you're a fan of subversive genre fare. Also, Ryan flirts with a new writing project, while Dave takes us back in time to a singularly profound hallucinatory episode in his youth. Next week, your hosts kickstart their Black History Month festivities with Ryan's next pick - "In The Heat of the Night"!

"In The Heat of the Night," "The Graduate" and "Cool Hand Luke" were some of the best movies of 1967, a year that many film historians consider ground-breaking, even revolutionary, as Hollywood finally appeared to respond to the youth movement and break from the old studio system. Film critics Linda DeLibero and Christopher Llewellyn Reed talk about the "new Hollywood" as reflected in the films of that year, including "Bonnie and Clyde," and "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner." Linda DeLibero is director of Film and Media Studies at Johns Hopkins University. Christopher Llewellyn Reed is chair and professor in the department of film and moving image at Stevenson University.Links:http://krieger.jhu.edu/film-media/https://web.stevenson.edu/chrisreed/
Hi all!! Our 60th episode is SUPER FLUFFY and comes to you from the depths of the nerd cave of Juan's house!! Shawn and Craig save Christmas with their year end ramblings - what they shoulda seen, what the coulda seen, what they did see, and what you can put on in the background to accompany your family fighting about politics. One thing they don't do is predict box office, which is probably smart. This will be their last podcast until they return on January 4th with a podcast about In The Heat of the Night. So let's get on with it! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Sidney Poitier changed America’s view of black men. And he changed Hollywood (though the change is far from over, given the issues of diversity at this year’s Oscars.). The star of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “The Defiant Ones,” and “In The Heat of the Night” was the first African-American to win an Academy Award - for “Lillies of the Field” in 1964. He was a leading man and box office sensation throughout the 1950’s and 60’s, portraying a huge array of characters with a dignity, courage and humanity that was radical for its time. In this episode, featuring an interview with Poitier at 82, you’ll hear him discuss how his childhood on a tiny island in the Bahamas made all the difference in his view of himself, and in the choices he made throughout his career as an actor.

I can’t recall how I discovered Bigo and Twigetti, a London-based label releasing modern classical, electronic and ambient sounds. The label’s current roster includes Leah Kardos, Jim Perkins, Microseq, Sanmi, Upside Down Umbrella, and Ranger 3. For this Headphone Commute mix, I invited the label to share their favorite tunes with their ever growing audience. Here’s more on this mix. In ‘The Heat of the Moment’ an article by George Monbiot, published in the Guardian on 28th August 2012 he states ‘Climate breakdown is right here, right now’. Polar ice is at the lowest levels since records began and it hardly makes the news. This mix is based upon that article and my feelings on climate change. For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com
