TGSS is in session!!!1:21- Hello, Repeat Pattern my old friend. Lather, rinse repeat. KK trying to not repeat the pattern with Mr. RHRN when he “ghosts” or goes too long between texts. KK gets all murdery.But hasn't just yet. In her body waiting to come out.Episode with the party ___________3:03 RHRN is out of town, spending a lot of time together since Shut Down. Feels good + safe, always reconnect time at night. Only 4 nights they haven't been together, KK figures out it's because she has her little freak outs.4:39- Feels separate, abandoned. The silence brings a story to the surface- “I'm not important enough.” 5:49- got all cute and vulnerable in a text and then… crickets. Nothing all night or in the morning. The Genie was released from the bottle.6.24- Here's the story… phone's in his hand or nearby, he can talk to his friend but not me…One way or another he “steps away” and instead of thinking he's busy, it's the deep story having to do with value, abandonment...which one is it for KK7.36- Now 2-3 days later and still nada. In his mind, he's not even thinking about it, just enjoying his space, coming back hot + juicy for each other. KK needs little check-ins.8:30- Oh, who's got his time, his attention.9:12- Did you make an agreement ahead of time to let him know what you needed? KK well, very soft agreement. 9:56- Jokingly before he left, “Oh, you need me to check in with you a lot while I'm gone.” kind of gave KK the impression that he got it and now it just feels purposeful and intentional.11:09- You don't care enough about me to pay attention. Many of us women have this and the men in our lives get the other side. Could he be getting a psychic message through the ethers?11:53- LIGHT BULB MOMENT- He sort of likes it when she gets a little mad at him. HIs need for tension to create drama and have a sexy coming back together? She's not the only one in this dance, he knows it's a button.12.57- KM reminds KK that this pattern has been with RS, and probably other people in her life. OH MAN! Belief established long ago. When we get triggered- FFFFWhat's KK's response? Ima fuckin kill you. FIGHT. KK recalls her dad and how he didn't check in and when he did it felt fake. 14.48- Too upset to talk to him and wouldn't talk to him as a punishment. Still has this same pattern with her dad but not the charge anymore. Pattern anyone?15.46- but what if RHRN likes the punishment? That's a whole other episode.17.03- What does KK need to do so she doesn't claw RHRN's eyes out when he's back?Breathe. Take a break.18.11- Little seed is still there, though she's healing the reactivity with her dad. Inner- pay attn to little wounded one and her story.So far so good… do you think she steps off the cliff?19.44- reparenting the part of us that's hurting. That little girl is important and valuable, way more important than a one second text. Story isn't true. (Feels!) KK understands and loves her very much.20.54- not let the little frantic inner one take over, she doesn't have to punish anyone. There's another way to handle the situation. Little One felt like she had to yell really loud or go really silent for someone to notice she's hurting. 21.41- KK not willing to do regular things to reach out, Little One is running the story so much. Dancing harder on stage to see how good she is. KK doesn't want to have to dance. Show up without having to beg/ask for it. 22.54 Feel like she's put first. Begging feels gross. 23.28 KK Like asking someone to give you a birthday present without them doing it on their own. KA- Ah, but that's not where I went so maybe that's another touchstone for KK to pay attention to.23.52- Gals pre-podcast and weren't getting anywhere with solutions so they decided to do it IRL with you. 24.21- cyclical with menstrual cycle when she wants to be nurtured.25.12- crushing neediness- 25 days so into you and those other days actually repelled. KK expresses need by pulling/pressuring- she thinks to ask for it or when she's mentioned it before/asked for what she needs but they've stayed away. In Big Kid relationships we don't just ask for what we want and get it…27.00- choice point- pattern happening, communicating it but not getting what you need. You need to take action on your own behalf so you don't jump, to invite them to get closer? Will she text right now? 28.33- Needs to do her healing work first before he responds, already operating. Clear neediness, expectations, any other gunk.29.29- KA- how to communicate when it's been a couple days and energy is still building. Make space for a partner to have life outside of you to have dignity in his process. 30.42- ask for what you really want when creating an (future) agreement. 31.10- deal conversation- respected for who you both are- KK doesn't have to give up that she needs more contact just because it's not easy for him and RHRN doesn't have to give up that he's going to remember just because it's what KK wants.31.49- Side comments are shaky, twisty, little traps- not agreements.32.11- a friend brought up a cultural difference how “lying” is treated and that played into all of her fears. Rabbit Hole. 33.10- Power is found in the responsibility you have in the creation of a story. Buy into the misbelief.33.31- People we love will fulfill what we need because they love us or we'll make a new decision if they're not capable. Needs to be room for both people to get what they need, may not look exactly like what she wants. KK- whatever, still not there. Feels like they've had this conversation enough times for him to really know what she needs.34.46- KK feels if she can't do this over a week, no way she can do this long term. (He's probably moving out of the country in 2-3 months).35.55- Try on a different idea- what if this nonchalant agreement sets it up for this pattern to keep happening? If she got really clear about her needs being as important as his and her responsibility to give herself what she needs, would she be willing to create a set of agreements that they create together?36.18- Even the word “remind” brings up a story. KK- I shouldn't have to remind someone I'm alive. 37.05- KM- Loving ourselves enough to ask for EXACTLY what we need so we don't end up in these lack situations inside of us. Building expectations when we don't firm up agreements.37.39- KK- Fear in making an agreement he will say yes but not fulfill it. So how can she support herself? KM- If this person can't show up and give you what you need, what is he actually telling you? KK- He doesn't care enough.39.10- when you make a strong agreement and the other can see how important it is, really understands it, they can respond in a way that surprises us.39.58- KK Doesn't feel like he's constitutionally capable to check in, he wants to disappear/be off the grid. Not about getting an agreement but about the work she needs to do to change the story.41.31- Face the truth of him (maybe) not being her person or what does he need to show up for her in this way? We THINK we know the answer but we just don't.42.37- hypothetical convo-KK “I don't know how this is going to happen but I need this level of contact with you.RHRN “I don't know how I'm going to do that?KK- “Well, what do you need? “RHRN- (Blow jobs) JK.43.44- Byron Katie- Don't pretend to be further along than you are. Be who you are today.We will see!44.12- The only thing KK is committing to is to text him after the show and not have it be hate filled. Authentically tell him what's going on, after she's done some healing work to soften the energy. Doing it differently already! 95% of people say that they're self-aware. But only 10-15% of people actually are. As my guest today says, that means "on a good day, 80% of us are lying to ourselves about how much we're lying to ourselves" and this blind spot can have big repercussions for our success and happiness.  Her name is Tasha Eurich, and she's an organizational psychologist and the author of Insight: Why We're Not as Self-Aware as We Think, and How Seeing Ourselves Clearly Helps Us Succeed at Work and in Life. Tasha kicks off our conversation by arguing that our level of self-awareness sets the upper limit of our individual effectiveness and that self-awareness can be developed and is truly the meta skill of the 21st century. She then unpacks what it is you know about yourself when you possess self-awareness, how there are two types of this knowledge, internal and external, and how you can have one without the other. Tasha then outlines the seven pillars of self-awareness, the barriers to getting insights into them --  including falling into the cult of self -- and how these barriers can be overcome, including asking yourself a daily check-in question. We then discuss how two of the most common methods for gaining self-knowledge -- introspection and journaling -- can in fact backfire and how to do them more effectively by asking yourself what instead of why, and actually journaling less instead of more. We also get into why you should be an in-former, rather than a me-former on social media, how to become more mindful without meditation, and how to solicit and handle feedback from other people, including holding something called the "Dinner of Truth." Yes, Scott Dochterman and I (Marc Morehouse) were two of the three Iowa journalists (QC TV dude Adam Rossow was there, too) at the NFL combine. So, guess what this #oniowapod is about. This is a little bit of what happened to and for the five Hawkeyes at the combine and then where WE THINK they might stand with results on the board. The CAPS are for emphasis. So many opinions on the draft are binary. You have to be smart enough to know there are degrees. So, I think Scott and I are fairly cautious on our opinions. That said, Tristan Wirfs was going to do that and we knew it. HAHA! Yeah, we knew that was going to happen. So did most of you guys. A.J. Epenesa isn’t going to be paid for running 40s. He never was. Now, Geno Stone will be paid to run 40s and he’ll have some ground to make up. Michael Ojemudia will put his engineering degree to work in, maybe 2027. He had a good weekend. The combine is a baseline read. Scott’s analogy about the optometrist flipping through lens 1 and lens 2 and asking you which one is better was perfect. Should Iowa be getting into deeper mechanics convos with its QBs? Good question and one that’s likely to come up this spring. We talked that, too, and took some Twitter questions. We might take some time off with spring football, but there’s always a chance that there will be something interesting to podcast about between now and when spring football starts March 25ish. Dr. Tasha Eurich is an organizational psychologist, researcher, and New York Times best-selling author of “Insight: Why We're Not as Self-Aware as We Think, and How Seeing Ourselves Clearly Helps Us Succeed at Work and in Life Tasha has thoroughly studied the science of self-awareness and has helped thousands of people improve their personal and professional effectiveness. Tasha believes that heightening self-awareness is essential for success today and self-understanding positively affects work performance, career satisfaction, leadership potential and relationships I think we all know someone like a co-worker or manager who thinks he’s a brilliant presenter or thinks he is well loved in the office but in reality they are far from it. But how often do we stop to consider whether we might have the similar problems? Do you understand how others really see you? According to Tasha’s research, 95 percent of the population believes they’re self-aware, but the reality is that only 10 to 15 percent actually are. So the majority of you are not self aware. Ok, so what? A recently published working paper from Paul Green and Francesca Gino of Harvard, and Bradley Staats of the UNC, caught people avoiding criticism - a specific type of criticism where they thought they were doing a good job but then were told they were not, this is called “disconfirmatory” feedback. They show’ed that when disconfirmatory feedback was given, workers would then avoid contact with the people who had given them the unwelcome comments. The problem is that “disconfirmatory” is the most useful type of feedback there is. If I’m blind to the mistakes I’m making I really need someone to explain what I’m doing wrong, however uncomfortable or it gets I just get worse. We have blind spots; things we do, issues we have that we just cannot see from our subjective vantage point.  And if we were more self aware, more open to feedback, they could be revealed to you for positive change, promotion, new position, better relationships, new relationships and on and on.  To the my fellow Googlers out there listening, this will help you with Perf (or anyone working for an organization that has regular performance reviews). Believe me, you can really benefit from what Tasha has to say.  But also, even if you don’t have regular reviews, she says self insight is a meta skill and can be applied to improve many areas of life.  Give it a listen. When we start to really honour and enjoy the process, that space between when you started something and when you finished something, not only is the destination or goal more exciting but the way there becomes enjoyable and fulfilling. You end up living your life on a deeper level than if you were just speeding forward to reach the destination. In this episode I want to encourage you to slow down and really really have fun in the process of whatever you are trying to create right now, because truly the destination is only a resting point before you begin the next process. Many of us think we’re complicated; we’re “too much” in certain ways and “not enough” in others. This creates heaviness and struggle because we believe we’re difficult to figure out. It’s really just a mental construct, however, designed to keep our defenses up so we can avoid anything emotionally that might challenge this perception. We THINK we allow people in when we feel a swirl of intense emotions, but that intensity is based on past, unresolved issues rather than the present relationship. These past fears (rejection, abandonment, etc.) create our perception that we are not good enough, yet at the same time we’re too much to handle. It all feels very complicated, like we come to relationships with piles of luggage. Fortunately, this is not the only way to live; there is a choice. To stop complicating your relationships, get in touch with your true wants and desires. This happens at the level of the heart, by the way, not the head. Your head is what complicates everything. When you vulnerably state your desires to your partner and act in accordance with them, the complexity unravels and a sense of ease results. You essentially bulldoze the B.S. you’ve been telling yourself, allowing yourself to be open to the unknown. My clients tell me all the time they are a lot to handle, which is familiar because I used to say the same thing. When I look at my relationship now, however, there is no “handling” of who I am because I already let go of my old façade. Once I connected with who I was and what I wanted, I was able to surrender, releasing the struggle I had previously created. It’s a shift from living mentally to living emotionally, and while it requires the discomfort of vulnerability, it really is a simpler, more fulfilled existence. We are ALL enough. The complexity we’ve identified with ourselves isn’t real—it’s just a means of avoiding our true selves.

Most people with insecure attachment don’t know the first thing about having fun. We THINK we let loose at times, but we really don’t. There’s a limit because we’re waiting for the other shoe to drop. We think something is bound to go wrong, so we only allow ourselves to experience life halfway. If we don’t go “all in,” there’s a (false) sense we’re protecting ourselves from an inevitable fall. But when we blunt or block negative emotions, the same happens to the positive ones. We can’t selectively experience joy while suppressing fear, disappointment or sadness. It doesn’t work that way. As a result, we limit ourselves. Living full out actually requires courage because it opens you up to the full spectrum of emotions. It says you trust yourself enough to handle it without being swallowed up or sucked down the rabbit hole. That’s hard to do. I was called “serious” for much of my life. In my relationships I could never fully relax and have fun because I was always on guard, hypervigilant. But this tension created drama (which we insecurely attached people subconsciously manifest because it’s familiar), leading to a roller-coaster of emotions. Ironic how, in an effort to dull negative emotions, we end up doing the opposite! I couldn’t feel the depth of my exaggerated emotions, which were attached to fantasy—to hope—not reality. We mistake intensity for fun. The sad thing is, we have no idea how much we actively avoid fun, missing out on life. Fun requires full emotional presence, allowing and accepting whatever may come. It does not result from trying to control, manipulate, hide or avoid. To fully experience joy, you have to let go and trust that you can handle whatever feelings emerge. Otherwise you’re living half a life… and where is the fun in that?

Dr. Linda Sharkey and Morag Barrett, co-authors of The Future-Proof Workplace, share their views on how the industrial revolution left us with the broken and toxic workplaces we see today. Virtual enterprises and aspirational millennials do not thrive under command-and-control leadership. Linda and Morag talk about how a culture of curiosity, learning, diversity, growth, and purpose can future-proof the workplace to lend purpose and power to individuals and teams.   Key Takeaways [5:40] Linda explains that the rules of industry were designed for an era with different values and beliefs, such as the belief that people need to be controlled and managed to achieve their goals. The manual manufacturing environment is replaced by automation. ‘Command and control’ is still seen in the office. Linda would rather see ideas put in place to help people be the best they can be, and contribute fully. [9:59] Linda comments on command and control. She considers the pressure to produce and sell, which has been present since the Great Recession, causes leaders to revert to the default style of command and control to meet high-pressure deadlines. [16:09] Linda says more books are written on leadership than any other topic. Leadership has been an issue for thousands of years. The style of leadership that is engaging, focused on development and on the individuals you are leading, with heart, has always been successful. People have tolerated command and control, but changed conditions and technology have made it unsustainable for this century. [17:41] Linda considers how current massive changes may cause us to step back and ask how can we really get to that place we’ve all been talking about for the last 50 years, of belonging, of diversity, with a culture that values people, and makes them feel they can participate and innovate, and feel appreciated. Things will never be as they were in the 1960s, so embrace the change and transform along with it. [20:11] Morag studied authors Christophe Morin, Sebastian Junger, and Robin Dunbar for her first book, on the importance of professional relationships. Technology gives us an illusion of connection, but social media friends are not friends to call on in an emergency. The neuroscience of what makes us human — how we work together, is important. Morag cites Daniel Pink on autonomy, mastery, and purpose. [23:02] Linda stresses the importance of purpose. Purpose needs to be the rallying cause. People get much more excited about what they’re doing, when thinking from a purposeful perspective. Deep down, people do want to help other people, and want to make and do things that will make a difference and leave a legacy. [24:56] Connection and empathy are basic principles. Morag suggests pausing to check in, and connect, before you dive into the project. Relationships are critical to success in the 21st century. Linda says technology gives us information very quickly, but the emotional connection, and feeling of a relationship is what makes a difference to people. Google research shows that the best teams care about each other. [34:18] Morag says leaders today need to have these conversations: what culture do we have on this team, what are our rules of engagement, and how are we working together? Start creating a language and framework that effects change, at your level of influence, if you are not in the C-suite. There will be a ripple effect to the rest of the organization. [39:17] Deal humanely with people that don’t produce. But saying that a certain percentage will be cut is toxic. Look at your strategy, and look at your people. Who has the skills now to move the strategy forward, who needs development, and who would work better in another area, or at another company? Keep the workforce vital, to deliver on the strategy. Dump the rules, and grow people with the company. [43:49] Morag shares case studies. They helped someone pivot from the mindset of a treadmill career track to a portfolio career, where the same skills performed a different role, and provided empowerment and fulfillment. Linda and Morag helped a team move past the way it has always been done, to an innovative, influential solution. Linda and Morag helped an organization find hidden talent in-house. [47:18] Linda shares a cultural transformation story of a Canadian division of a global company. With six months of serious effort, they really changed how leadership acted, and how they were interacting with the company. They measured the results with psychometric tools. Over a year, they were able to turn the culture around to become a star division in the company. Dr. Tasha Eurich shares her experiences as an organizational psychologist, researcher, coach, and New York Times bestselling author along with her new book, Insight for improving self-awareness. Tasha explains the dangers inherent in poor self-awareness in leaders, individuals, and teams, and she provides specific solutions for achieving the self-awareness that will improve corporate culture, and client relations while supporting sustainable profit. There are severe consequences in the workplace when people believe falsely they are self-aware. Having more self-aware executives brings financial returns to a company. Unaware behavior at any level has financial consequences. Tasha’s research says we live in a world where people don’t tell each other the truth, because the truth is uncomfortable. [6:10] Tasha worked with 50 people who had made dramatic transformations in their self-awareness as adults. Many common methods of finding self-awareness are more myth than reality. Jan and Jim were in the group of 50 test subjects. Tasha found that ‘unicorns,’ as she terms them, fight against personal and societal defaults to arrive at self-awareness. Unicorns seek feedback from people they trust. [12:08] Tasha discusses psychic frailty and psychic safety. Our biases tell us we are better than we are. Seeking feedback from others exposes our frailty. Psychological safety in organizations involves self-aware teams and organizations. It requires people to let their guard down and trust and support each other enough to tell each other the truth. It includes vulnerability. [14:50] We assume that the people that love us will tell us the truth, but research shows, they will tell us neither our weaknesses nor our strengths, without being asked. Ask them, “What annoys you the most about me?” You might hear something you’ve never heard before. It’s up to you to ask those questions. [18:18] Tasha gives an example of one of her self-awareness heroes, Alan Mulally (of Boeing Commercial and of Ford Motor Company). Tasha saw a person who has self-confidence, but who acutely appreciates his weaknesses, and is constantly questioning his performance. She illustrates this with an anecdote. [20:06] Tasha says unicorns are willing to admit what they don’t do well and question their own view. They also have self confidence. Tasha’s research differentiates between people who have unwarranted high self-esteem, and people who have self-acceptance. Self-acceptance is to appreciate your own strengths and weaknesses, and be willing to forgive yourself for your flaws, and find out the truth. [21:43] Tasha offers cues to look for in your team to see whether someone needs to be coached for self-awareness. Look for those who speak about themselves in a way inconsistent with their behavior, or with other’s perceptions of them. Coaching for those who are willfully disruptive is different than coaching for someone who is ignorantly ineffective. [24:48] Tasha offers suggestions on feedback in the organization. The mindset of giving feedback only once a year leads to embarrassment about problems that are not mentioned as they occur. At the very least, offer regular touch points of feedback that are informal and in the moment, to reap the biggest benefits of self-awareness and improved daily performance. Tasha tells how teams can do this. [28:07] Tasha offers thoughts on team awareness and individual awareness. Tasha tells of three building blocks for self-aware teams: a leader who models the way, the expectation and accountability to tell the truth, and  an ongoing process to stay self-aware. You need an agreement to constantly check in with each team member, and the collective team, to stay self-aware together. [36:56] First-time CEO’s can suddenly find an absence of feedback. Tasha talks about Ed Catmull of Pixar., who, on becoming the boss, knew that he wasn’t any different, but the second he showed up in that new title, he knew the employees saw him differently. [38:10] Tasha talks about the adversity of looking for a new job. Don’t wait until you wake up one day and find you need a new job. Ask yourself everyday what you did that day that fit your passion, or what you did today that you never want to do again. The cumulative effect of these questions can lead to self-awareness. Don’t wait for a big event, like a job loss, to catalyze insight. [41:48] Tasha explains the Candor Challenge. Self-aware teams commit to doing this at least once a year. It’s a process of individual openness with the full team about the positive, the negative, and areas for improvement for each member, and commitments for accountability. "Panda" is the #1 song in the country this week, and I try to explain that because kids are dumb, it's really not Desiigner's fault. I explain my excitement for the upcoming Drake/Future tour, that has it's first stop here in Austin. We both commit to listening to "Views from the 6" this weekend, so we can give an honest review next week. Travis fills us on his continued love affair with "Ant-Man", and his great time at a Polica concert. I talk about the difficulties of eating five times a day, our upcoming flagship episodes, and the homie's new comic series that just went into print! On this week's Flash episode, we see Barry adjust back to life as a normal, the young Miss Wells understand the value in killing the bad guys, and a "flash-off" between Our titular hero and his potential running buddy (see what I did there?)! Our villain of the week seems to grow old with anger, and boy is that Zoom one scarred supervillain! We THINK we've figured out just who's behind that mask, to varying degrees of excitement. Caitlyn gets to flex her acting muscles, playing both versions of herself against one another, and Earth-2 Wells keeps on being the cold SOB we know and love. This, and a preview of our possible "Flashpoint" powers restoration scene, on this week's South Kongress Fan X Fan Show!

Suzette McCanny is a theatre actor and a film director specializing in ensemble work. She is currently playing Blaire in We Three by Cue 6 Theatre at The Tarragon Theatre. She has played Josie in The Skriker at the Storefront Theatre by Red One Theatre. The Skriker was included in the Top Ten Indie Productions of 2014 by Toronto's Now Magazine. Other credits include Mistress Ford in Merry Wives of Windsor and Rosaline in Love's Labour's Lost for Shakespeare Bash'd and Isabelle in Norman Yeung's Theory directed by Joanne Williams.She played 'Stage Manager' in Play: The Film by Kelly McCormack which won the People's Choice Award at the Canadian Film Festival. Suzette directed her first short film, 99 . 7% (Official Selection of aGliff) in Nov 2013. She directed, edited and starred in a trio of short films that called Triptych Triptych Triptych including The Garfield Appreciation Club, Can't Close a Painted Eye and We Think it Belongs in the Sea; due to hit the 2016 festival circuit.
