This week, Steve, Julia and guest host Isaac Butler visit a pre-gentrified 1990s New York to discuss the gritty crime romp Caught Stealing directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Austin Butler (no relation). Next, it's off to Cooper's Chase, an English manor turned retirement community, to take up the case of The Thursday Murder Club, Netflix's new film adaptation of the beloved cozy mystery series. Finally, they assess what the film studio A24's rise—and potential fall—means for the movie business in their conversation about “Empire of Auteurs,” a recent New Yorker piece by Alex Barasch. In an exclusive Slate Plus bonus episode, they look at the rise and actual, well-documented fall of the longform narrative podcast. Raphael Bob-Waksberg was still in his 20s when he convinced Netflix to produce his audacious Hollywood satire about a washed-up, alcoholic former TV star who also happens to be a horse. Now, as a 41-year-old father of two, the creator of ‘Bojack Horseman' is back with another animated Netflix series that is just as boldly funny and devastatingly emotional, but without the crutch of constant animal puns. In this episode, Bob-Waksberg opens up about his “vulnerable” new show, ‘Long Story Short,' which depicts a Jewish family in the Bay Area that is not unlike his own. He breaks down how the show's unique time-jumping format cleverly tricks viewers into feeling like they have known the characters for years and reflects on how the essential Jewishness of the story has been interpreted—or perhaps, misinterpreted—by critics. Bob-Waksberg also looks back on the legacy of ‘Bojack,' including what it did or not predict about the state of “Hollywoo” in 2025 and what it would take for him to revive those characters after saying goodbye to them five years ago. Career ups and downs are inevitable. Arden Cho just took 20 years' worth of acting highs and lows, funneled them all into a powerhouse voice performance, and churned out one of the very best cinematic characters of 2025, a Netflix character who well-aligns with her own personal creative goals as an actor and is also proving to be a character who can inspire anyone.Cho leads the voice cast of one of the biggest hits of 2025, and one of the greatest pop culture sensations of recent years, Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters. Cho does the speaking voice while Ejae delivers the incredible vocals for Rumi, one of three members of the K-pop group Huntr/x. While the world sees a trio delivering catchy hit after hit, what the average person doesn't know is that Huntr/x's music also charges the Honmoon, a magical barrier that keeps demons from the human world. When a demonic K-pop boy band called the Saja Boys enter the picture, they threaten Huntr/x's ability to remain at the top of the charts and turn the Honmoon gold. The situation also runs the risk of exposing Rumi's greatest secret. With KPop Demon Hunters continuing to dominate the Netflix charts, striking gold at the box office with wildly popular sing-along screenings, and starting to build some serious awards season buzz, Cho swung by the Collider Ladies Night studio for a chat about her journey to the film, a journey that included a number of experiences that had Cho consider leaving the industry. Whether you're an aspiring animator, filmmaker, or simply a fan of global stories, this episode reveals why authentic perspectives matter and how they're transforming the entertainment landscape

The show also covers the Micah Parsons vs. Jerry Jones situation and Patrick Mahomes traveling to Brazil. Hour 2 The Giants' schedule started with Gio stating they need to go 2-2, scoring points and Russell Wilson throwing TDs, beating either Dallas or Washington. Boomer believes both Giants' lines will improve and Russ limits turnovers. Boomer suggested the Jets keep Aaron Rodgers, but Gio argued against it for culture change. Sam Darnold is now with the Seahawks. Boomer then listed quarterbacks for comparison. Jerry provided an update, after Gio mentioned C-Lo's tuberculosis last week and Al's confusion over MLB Wild Card standings. Juan Soto hit a grand slam and triple for the Mets. Carlos Mendoza discussed Sean Manaea's issues. We heard Bill Belichick and North Carolina losing to TCU. Brian Daboll discussed Jayden Daniels, their week one opponent. Micah Parsons spoke about the Green Bay fanbase. The hour concluded with NFL news and a caller asking Gio who he'd rather have in a big game: Boomer or Phil Simms? Hour 3 The hour began with baseball talk, covering the Mets' recent struggles against the Marlins and their win in Detroit, highlighting young pitchers Jonah Tong and Nolan McLean. The Mets have dominated the Phillies this season, especially at home, but need three consistent starting pitchers. Boomer praised McLean's natural pitching ability. Jerry then updated on Jalen Hurts discussing the Cowboys defense, Jon Gruden's admiration for it, and Andy Reid on the Chiefs' Brazil trip. The Mets' Detroit win featured a Juan Soto grand slam and triple. Sounds of Bill Belichick and UNC's loss to TCU were played. Cruises have always had a reputation that swings from dreamy to disastrous. For some, it's the ultimate vacation: unlimited food, sparkling blue water, and a floating city that takes you from one tropical port to the next. For others, cruises are associated with headlines like the infamous “Poop Cruise,” which recently appeared on Netflix, or haunting stories like the disappearance of Amy Bradley. With such extreme narratives, it can be hard to know what to believe. The truth about cruise culture lies somewhere in between. We dive into the truth about cruise culture.
With vengeful alien civilizations, virtual realities and hologram wives, Chinese science fiction is in its heyday — not just in China but around the globe. Burke Swanson brings the heart, humor, and metaphysical musings to this episode in a way that's rare and deeply refreshing. From his early days as a third-grader doing stand-up at a summer camp to stepping into the Netflix universe as Hopper Jr. in Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Burke shares the moments that shaped him—and the ones that continue to ground him. We go well beyond credits to talk about the importance of ensemble energy, the spiritual nature of collaboration, and how 65% of his audience are seeing theater for the first time thanks to this production. That's no small ripple effect. We also talk about what it means to chase artistic expression when you're not even sure what form it'll take, and how acting might just be the day job that funds your actual art. Whether it's football plays as choreography, crying backstage during a surprise Season 5 trailer drop, or reflecting on experimental poetry zines, this one is full of unexpected gems. Burke is equal parts philosopher, clown, and community-builder—and it shows in every minute of this conversation. Burke Swanson is currently starring as James Hopper Jr. in Stranger Things: The First Shadow at Broadway's Phoenix Theatre. Michael Gove and Madeline Grant launch ‘Quite right!', the new podcast from The Spectator that promises sanity and common sense in a world that too often lacks both.In their first episode, they take stock of a political summer dominated by Nigel Farage, a Labour government already facing mutiny, and the curious spectacle of Tory MPs moonlighting as gonzo reporters. From J.D. Vance's Cotswold sojourn and Tom Skinner's bish bash bosh patriotism, to Sydney Sweeney's jeans advert causing a culture war, Michael and Madeline discuss what really drives our politics: policies, or memes and vibes?Plus: Keir Starmer's ‘phase two' reshuffle – does it amount to more than technocratic jargon? And why has cosy crime conquered our screens, even as Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club stumbles upon its Netflix release?Produced by Oscar Edmondson, Oscar Bicket and Matt Miszczak. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
