Jamaica Kincaid began writing for The New Yorker in 1974, reporting about life in the magazine's home city. She was a young immigrant from Antigua, then a British colony; she had been sent to New York—against her wishes—to work as a nanny. Soon began a love affair with New York's literary scene. “I had to change my name,” she tells David Remnick, “because Elaine Potter Richardson could not write about Elaine Potter Richardson. But Jamaica Kincaid could write about Elaine Potter Richardson.” Kincaid went on to write books about her family; about the dissolution of a marriage; about Antigua, and what colonialism feels like to people on a small island; and later gardening, which she took up with a passion after moving to Vermont. She once said, “Everything I write is autobiographical, but none of it is true in the sense of a court of law. You know, a lie is just a lie. The truth, on the other hand, is complicated.” Kincaid's new book, “Putting Myself Together,” is a collection of pieces that span almost half a century in print, and includes her first published piece in The New Yorker—an account of the West Indian-American Day Parade of 1974.

Welcome. I'm Kevin Miller and this is a podcast for your personal evolution. In this episode Will A Better World Really Benefit Us & If Not - What Actually Will I've struggled with technology and conveniences and efficiency for a long time. All our human advancements with tech and now AI and such are promoted as if they will finally make everything better and us, happier. But I have not experienced any technological advance that has added to my happiness, and actually, I feel it's done the opposite. How many people have experienced an electricity outage and have stories of how great it was. We get out candles, play games, and talk like we haven't in ages. On a more grand scale, are all our advances that arguably make life better, resulting in more happiness? Not according to our constantly declining health stats. So if all the “betterment” efforts aren't making us happy, why? And what will? My guest is Soren Gordhamer. Soren is the founder and host of Wisdom 2.0, the premier conference exploring living with greater mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion in the modern age. Soren brings the leaders of technology, literally the giants who most impact the world as we know it, together with leaders in wisdom to explore how we can create a truly livable world with greater presence, purpose, and connection in this digital age that feels more and more like chaos just speeding up. Soren's work focuses on a central question: as technology becomes ever more integrated into our lives, will it support human thriving and connection—or drive distraction and isolation? He's culminated what he's learned about the influence of tech and now AI into a new book, The Essential: Discovering What Really Matters in an Age of Distraction. I sat down with Soren to get candid on my feeling that all our advancements are not and will not make us happier, and in fact, will continue to add to our declining mental health. Soren sights AI in health as expectant to do great things, such as find a cure for cancer. But I ask that even with that, a cure for cancer, will that actually make us happier? We reached back into the archives and pulled out a very special episode that Dave and Bethlie did back in season 2. Pray for Pastor Dave as he recovers from a pretty nasty cold. In this special episode, Dave and Bethlie Young tackle the critical issue of internet pornography and its impact on families. They share alarming statistics about pornography exposure among children and teens, including that 93% of boys and 62% of girls are exposed to internet porn before age 18, with the average first exposure occurring at age 11. Pornography has become "aggressive" - actively seeking out children rather than requiring them to search for it. No family is exempt from this challenge, whether homeschooled, Christian schooled, or public schooled. We all want to live long. But how long is a long life? Centenarians are still rare. Global life expectancy is around 70 years old. In healthier, richer countries, maybe 80. But when you open up Scripture, you find ages an order of magnitude larger. Adam lived to 930. Methuselah to 969. How do we understand the radical difference in the ages of the ancients? What changed from then till now? Why did God shrink the average life expectancy? This question intrigued many of our sages, and in this very fun and interesting podcast, we explore some of the ideas that they shared.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. This week's parsha continues Moshe's monologue to the nation in the weeks preceding his passing. He begins by recounting his repeated efforts in trying to convince God to rescind His decree that Moshe not enter the Land; Moshe then begins the retelling of the Torah; and we read many warnings and predictions about proper behavior and the consequences of abandoning Torah and mitzvos. This is a parsha replete with iconic verses and big themes!– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Today's sermon explored Paul's call in Ephesians 5:8-14 to “walk as children of light.” Using vivid comparisons between darkness and light, the message unpacked what it means to move from a life defined by fear, selfishness, and chaos to one marked by purpose, fruitfulness, and the radiance of Christ. The sermon challenged the idea that Christians are merely passive reflectors of Christ's light, instead affirming that, in Christ, we become light ourselves. It also addressed the tension between striving to please God and the mystery of His will, encouraging a life of intentional, Spirit-empowered action rather than paralyzing over-analysis. Finally, the sermon called for an “awake” life—one that expects God's abundance daily and is alert to opportunities for good works, both big and small.

In his book Stoicism and the Art of Happiness, author, therapist, and stoic philosopher, Donald Robertson, writes:"The Sage conquers his passions by becoming stronger than them not by eliminating all traces of emotions from his life. The Stoic ideal is therefore not to be ‘passionless' in the sense of being ‘apathetic', ‘hard-hearted', ‘insensitive' or ‘like a statue' of stone or iron. Rather, it is to experience natural affection for ourselves, our loved ones, and other human beings. And to value our lives in accord with nature."In today's conversation Donald will dive deeper into what Stoicism is, and what it's not. He'll shed light on how Stoicism in popular culture is often misinterpreted -Inappropriately distilled into messages that tout self-discipline and personal responsibility, yet at the same time leave out what the stoics may have valued most:Wisdom, justice, and love for humankind. We'll also explore the possibility, and practices that might support us in living into Marcus Aurelius's conception of the Ideal Stoic:Meeting our lives, our work, and our relationships increasingly from a place that is free of passions, and full of love. When it comes to money, most people are searching for two things: security and peace of mind. That's understandable—life is unpredictable, expenses arise, and markets swing. But what if true peace isn't found in your circumstances at all?Financial wisdom doesn't start with a budget or a savings plan. It begins with trust—specifically, trusting in the Lord. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”If you chase peace through your paycheck or portfolio, you'll always come up short. But when Christ is your foundation, you begin to see money in a new light—not as a source of peace, but as a tool to steward.Five Secrets to Financial Wisdom from God's Word1. Know Who Owns It All. Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.” Everything belongs to God—your income, your retirement, even your ability to earn. That means we're not owners; we're stewards, entrusted with God's resources to manage faithfully.2. Spend With Purpose. Jesus asks in Luke 16:11, “If you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” Spending should reflect God's priorities—giving, saving, living within your means, and investing in eternal impact.3. Avoid the Slavery of Debt. Proverbs 22:7 warns, “The borrower is slave to the lender.” Debt can limit your freedom to give and respond to God's calling. Wise stewards build margin and pursue freedom—not because debt is always wrong, but because freedom is better.4. Save With Perspective. Proverbs 21:20 says, “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” Saving isn't about hoarding; it's preparation for what God might have ahead. But remember: your security isn't in your savings—it's in the Savior.5. Give First, and Freely. 2 Corinthians 9:7 tells us, “God loves a cheerful giver.” Generosity reflects God's heart. It breaks the grip of greed and aligns us with His Kingdom. When we give, we declare, “God, I trust You more than I trust this money.”Anchored in ChristFollowing these biblical principles won't guarantee worldly success. Even the most faithful stewards face trials. But when your foundation is Christ, you're anchored. Isaiah 33:6 says, “He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge.”So if you're looking for security or peace, don't start with a spreadsheet—start with surrender. Financial wisdom begins when you recognize that your Provider is also your Redeemer. And in Him, you have more than enough. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My deceased friend's estate is in probate, and he owned an LLC registered in another state. In Christianity, decision-making is an often mystified topic. Life is full of choices, and sin complicates things. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar discuss how Scripture offers a much clearer way forward. Making God-honoring decisions isn't about unlocking a secret code—it's about confidence in God's sovereignty. The heart of a believer is to walk in communion with God in every part of life, not just in moments of uncertainty. When someone fully surrenders to Christ, God will carry them. Walking in the fear of the Lord and having a reverent awe of who He is brings clarity. When someone lives for God's glory, every decision filters through that lens. The wisdom of God isn't hidden, it's available in His Word. The guys emphasize how we often overcomplicate things when Scripture is always sufficient. The more time someone spends in the Bible, the more their decisions reflect God's heart. The world may pressure and mislead, but the believer stays focused on Christ. Practically, decision-making often involves affinity (what someone loves), ability (what someone is good at), and opportunity (which doors are opening). The church plays a vital role here—believers need objective counsel. There's wisdom in a multitude of counselors. The guys remind believers to avoid surrounding themselves with yes men. Everyone needs people who aren't impressed by them and will speak the truth in love.Making unpopular decisions is difficult. That's why it's important to determine convictions before the moment comes. The more someone is in Scripture and community, the easier it becomes to stand strong. Even if alone, a believer is never truly alone- God stands with them. Knowing God's Word also narrows options in a good way. Don't ask God for direction while ignoring what He's already revealed. If God seems silent, perhaps He's already spoken and now it's time for obedience. The Bible is the instruction manual. As leaders, especially husbands, decisions must reflect God's will, not self-interest. Husbands are called to lead, but not alone; wives are given to help discern God's direction. Leadership is service- first to God, then to others. The world says to follow your heart, but the Bible says the heart is deceitful. God-honoring decisions come from God-saturated minds. Those who seek wisdom must ask God for it and saturate themselves in His Word. Surrounding oneself with praying, honest believers matters. As the guys remind Christians, faith is a refusal to panic. Wait on the Lord. Trust His ways over your own. Cry out to Him because He knows more than we ever will.Send us a textThanks for listening! Welcome back to Barn Talk! In today's episode, Sawyer and Tork welcome Doug and Amy Larson from Minnesota—well-known faces in the online ag community and the family behind a thriving YouTube channel documenting everyday life on their farm. The conversation kicks off with the Larsons sharing the heartfelt reason behind their trip through Iowa—supporting a friend's family facing childhood cancer—before diving into stories from their own long journey together, from high school sweethearts to building a multigenerational farming operation.Get ready for laughter, nostalgia, and wisdom as Doug and Amy recount early years living in a “temporary” mouse-infested farmhouse, learning the ropes of farming, and figuring out family life on the land. The crew talks honestly about what it's like marrying into a farm family, the highs and lows of ag economics, lessons learned from the 1980s and ‘90s farm crises, and how those challenges shape their perspective on gratitude and resilience today. Amy shares about the realities—and occasional loneliness—of being a farm wife, and the joys she found in community and faith.Plus, you'll hear behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the rise of the Larsons' YouTube and social media presence, including how “Dougo” became an unlikely internet celebrity and why sharing real farm life matters now more than ever. The episode touches on the changing nature of farm work, navigating generational transitions, and why authenticity resonates in a world hungry for the real deal.So whether you're a farmer, a YouTube fan, or just love a good story about family, grit, and finding meaning in the everyday, pour yourself a cup and settle in—this is one episode you don't want to miss!Shop Farmer Grade

We live in a culture of choice. In our individualistic culture, our place and our parents and our social location don't determine everything that we can do. We have some choices. Choices! What does that mean? That means we've never needed wisdom more than we do now, because wisdom is the ability to make wise choices. Proverbs 4 shows us that if we want to lead a life of wisdom, our lives will be characterized by three things: 1) a glorious fight, 2) a guarded heart, and 3) a living word. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 22, 2013. Series: Wisdom in Life. Scripture: Proverbs 4:5-9, 14-27. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church. What good is courage if not in pursuit of justice? And how can we know what is just and right without wisdom? And without temperance and self-discipline, how will we have the strength both to acquire wisdom and to apply courage?
