Charter Communications has announced its acquisition of Cox Communications for $34.5 billion, a significant move that will merge two of the largest internet service providers in the United States. This merger is expected to require approval from the Federal Communications Commission due to Cox's critical operational licenses. The combined entity plans to adopt the Cox Communications name, with Spectrum serving as the consumer-facing brand in areas previously served by Cox. This merger could potentially impact service quality for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) that rely on Cox as their provider, especially during the integration phase. In another major development, Proofpoint has revealed its plans to acquire Hornet Security for $1 billion, aiming to enhance its cybersecurity offerings and expand its presence in the cloud security market. Hornet Security specializes in Microsoft 365 solutions and has shown impressive growth, reporting over $160 million in annual recurring revenue. This acquisition may alienate Hornet Security's managed service provider (MSP) partners if there are changes in pricing, support models, or access to services, creating an opportunity for competitors to attract disaffected partners.Arm is rebranding its system-on-a-chip product designs to focus on power savings for artificial intelligence workloads, targeting sectors like automotive and cloud computing. The company reported a significant revenue increase, driven by licensing and royalty revenue. Meanwhile, Box is enhancing its collaboration with Microsoft by introducing an AI agent that integrates with Microsoft 365 Copilot, allowing users to analyze documents and automate tasks more efficiently. These moves reflect the industry's shift towards AI integration and the importance of aligning with existing platforms to deliver value.Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has introduced updates to its Morpheus software and VM Essentials offerings, promising substantial cost savings for businesses in the virtualization market. HPE's new pricing model, based on server sockets rather than cores, aims to provide significant financial advantages, especially as VMware faces scrutiny over its pricing strategies. Additionally, the podcast discusses the challenges posed by shadow AI and the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, emphasizing the need for governance and transparency as organizations increasingly adopt AI tools without formal approval. The episode concludes with a reflection on the implications of AI in education, highlighting the growing use of AI tools by professors and the concerns raised by students regarding the authenticity of their learning experience.  Four things to know today  00:00 Charter-Cox Merger and Proofpoint's $1B Hornet Deal Signal New Era of Scale and Specialization in Tech Services 03:38 From Chips to Content: Arm and Box Shift Strategies to Embed AI Across Cloud, Automotive, and Microsoft 365  05:39 HPE Launches Morpheus and VM Essentials Updates With Up to 90% Savings Over VMware Licensing  07:45 Shadow AI, Specialized Models, and Student Backlash: The Growing Pains of Enterprise AI Adoption   Supported by:  https://mspradio.com/engage/ All our Sponsors: https://businessof.tech/sponsors/ Do you want the show on your podcast app or the written versions of the stories? Datapac, Ireland's leading technology solutions and services provider, has announced that its technology is helping to drive equine disease diagnosis and research for the Irish Equine Centre (IEC). Founded in 1983, the Kildare-based IEC is a leading scientific and diagnostic service provider dedicated to the health and wellbeing of horses. The IEC's existing IT infrastructure was no longer able to keep pace with the growing technology demands of the equine diagnostics field. Following a competitive tender, Datapac delivered a complete refresh of the centre's IT ecosystem to support the rollout of a wide range of services, including laboratory diagnostics, disease surveillance, and research on equine health and biosecurity. The solution is underpinning continued growth and success for the IEC, which has just launched the Pet Vet Lab, a new service dedicated to advancing the health of household pets. It offers a ground-breaking screening service directly to pet owners, producing a personalised probiotic which is unique to each pet. Datapac's fully managed solution includes a comprehensive overhaul and integration of the IEC's networking, compute, and storage infrastructure, built on Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) hardware and software. As the leading diagnostic service provider to the Irish equine industry, infrastructure uptime and resilience is vital for the IEC. The technology provides robust cloud data backup and recovery, with the ability to restore data in minutes in the event of an incident. Advanced de-duplication vastly reduces the size of data storage, with up to 90% data capacity savings, and has significantly reduced cloud hosting costs for the centre. It also ensures speedy access to applications and data, boosting productivity for the IEC's 69 employees. Meanwhile, in an ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape, Datapac's Managed Threat Ops service provides round-the-clock monitoring, response, and neutralisation of cybersecurity threats. The IEC also serves as a teaching centre for third-level veterinary students and Microsoft Office 365 software with individual accounts and storage space provides a seamless user experience. In addition, Datapac has enhanced connectivity across the IEC campus, implementing a wireless network solution and upgrade to next-generation Wi-Fi 6. The consolidation of technologies coupled with support from Datapac engineers for day-to-day technical queries has reduced the burden on in-house IT resources, freeing up time to focus on driving innovation for the centre. Michael Mahady, IT Manager, Irish Equine Centre, said: "We had worked with Datapac in the past, and knew that its skilled team was best placed to deliver on our key objectives as technologies continue to advance. The flexibility and high level of data protection provided by the HPE Simplivity platform is of the utmost importance, as secure backup and business continuity is crucial to enable us to continue to roll out our services and resources. Furthermore, Datapac's solution provides the benefits of a smaller storage footprint while retaining the operational horsepower of a much larger system to support the early detection and management of diseases. Reliable access to Datapac's experts is invaluable and gives us the peace of mind to focus on delivering value-adding projects for the centre." Colin Chapman, Business Relationship Manager, Datapac, said: "The Irish Equine Centre does such important work to promote horse health in Ireland, and our technology infrastructure overhaul is providing the proactive support and increased capabilities to continue to advance these vital services. Our solution has futureproofed the IEC's IT systems which will help the centre to grow and innovate in line with evolving industry demands. We are looking forward to building on our relationship with the centre as it continues to develop its cutting-edge resources." See more stories here.

HPE GreenLake Backup-as-a-Service, with Datapac. Article by Karen O'Connor, General Manager, Datapac As we navigate the complexities of digital transformation, data has emerged as a clear driver for success and an indispensable asset for all organisations. This paradigm shift has not only accelerated growth but also brought the critical need for robust data protection strategies to the forefront, particularly in the face of evolving cyber threats and the shift towards hybrid cloud environments. A secure data backup solution that allows for swift retrieval of data in the event of an accidental deletion or disaster remains a key cornerstone for every organisation. Following layered cybersecurity guidelines in line with established best-practice recommendations, data backup is an organisation's last line of defence in the event of a ransomware attack or other cybersecurity incident. The challenge is that in this hybrid world of ever-escalating complexity, many traditional data backup solutions simply aren't equipped to deal with the challenge at hand. They are struggle to keep pace with the rate of change and are unable to cope with the scalability and flexibility required in today's fast-paced digital ecosystem. Organisations need a solution that not only ensures data integrity and availability but also aligns with dynamic environments and modes of operation. In recognition of this need, Datapac, in partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), is proud to introduce HPE GreenLake Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS), a revolutionary data backup solution designed from the ground up for all the complexities the modern age has in store. It offers a cloud-native, as-a-service solution that simplifies and secures data backup and recovery across hybrid environments. Through an unerring focus on delivering services which are "hybrid by design", the solution is ideally equipped to meet and exceed the data protection needs of today's organisations by offering unparalleled simplicity, efficiency, and security. True as-a-Service Experience At the core of HPE GreenLake BaaS lies the genuine as-a-Service experience. Designed to accommodate the dynamic nature of contemporary business operations, this service ensures flexibility and scalability. With deployment options that can be adjusted to suit any IT configuration, whether it's on-premises, in the cloud, in colocation, or a hybrid approach, the service can be tailored to fit an organisation's unique requirements. Simplification at its Core The cornerstone of HPE GreenLake BaaS is its ability to drastically simplify data protection. Organisations can manage their entire backup and recovery operations through a single, intuitive SaaS-based console, eliminating the complexity associated with traditional solutions. This simplicity extends to policy-based automation, allowing for the effortless protection of workloads across on-premises and cloud environments with minimal manual intervention. Effortless Scalability with Predictable Pricing In today's dynamic business landscape, scalability and cost management are both central considerations for any business investment. HPE GreenLake BaaS addresses these concerns through a flexible, consumption-based billing model. This model allows businesses to scale their data protection efforts up or down based on actual usage, ensuring they only pay for the resources they need. It also enables organisations to move more of their IT budgets from an up-front cost to a manageable ongoing investment If an organisation decides to streamline the amount of data held in backups, the monthly charge will decrease commensurately. If a decision is made to rapidly increase data storage for any reason, they can accurately and reliably forecast the investment figure and plan accordingly. This model not only provides predictability in costs but also affords the agility to adapt to changing data storage needs without incurring unnecessary expenses. Unmatched Security and Comp...

Data Center Frontier editors Matt Vincent and David Chernicoff recently caught up with Cyxtera's Field CTO Holland Barry on the occasion of Cyxtera and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announcing a new collaboration to help simplify customers' hybrid IT strategies. Cyxtera is now leveraging HPE's GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform to support an enterprise bare metal platform. The podcast discussion extends to how Cyxtera is presently focused on supporting AI workloads in data centers and collaborating with HPE to offer a multi-hybrid cloud strategy. Barry revealed during the podcast that Cyxtera already supports 70 kilowatt racks in 18 markets, and is discussing expanded deployments with its customers and partners. Barry added that many present customers are considering moving to private cloud platforms, due to rising public cloud costs and unexpected fees. Barry said, "My function here at Cyxtera deals largely with the technologies that we both implement internally and also that we deploy within the data centers themselves to make sure that experience of being in the data center colo facility is seamless, feels as much like cloud as it can in terms of the provisioning of services, how we bill for things, things like that." He added, "Generally speaking, I'm a technologist at heart and I just want to make sure that what we're building is what's useful for the market to consume." Here's a list of key points discussed on the podcast: 2:01 - Barry talks about Cyxtera's vision for supporting AI workloads in data centers, including cooling technologies, network speed, power designs, and accommodating adjacencies with edge and public cloud platforms. 4:18 - DCF's Chernicoff asks if Cyxtera will offer 70 kilowatt racks a la Digital Realty. Barry explains that Cyxtera already supports this capacity in 18 of its markets, and is in active discussions with customers and partners over an expansion. 5:40 - Barry discusses how Cyxtera's collaboration with HPE addresses rising cloud costs and furthers a multi-hybrid cloud strategy, including Cyxtera's new enterprise bare metal platform and options for opex financing models. 7:53 - Use cases for customers moving to the HPE GreenLake solution via Cyxtera are discussed, including repatriating cloud workloads and tech refreshes. 15:03 - Asked about the convergence of cloud and hybrid IT strategies, Barry says that Cyxtera views themselves as part of such transformations and says the provider is up front with its customers about what workloads are best suited for their platform. The trend of recalibrating workloads from the public cloud to data centers for better cost management is also discussed. 18:22 - Barry expounds on how egress fees and other unexpected costs can lead to a "death by 1000 cuts" situation for public cloud users, driving them to consider private cloud options 19:57 - Barry observes that many customers are realizing the costs of the public cloud and considering moving to a private cloud solution, and emphasizes the importance of Cyxtera making this transition as easy as possible through technology choices and partnerships. 21:57 - Barry comments on the new Cyxtera partnership with HPE in the context of providing choices and solutions to make moving customer workloads to their venue as easy as possible, with the goal of building a multi-hybrid cloud reality in the future. Background on Cyxtera Cyxtera Technologies operates a global network of 60 data centers, supports 2,300 customers, and had $746 million in revenue in 2022. The company was formed in 2016 when Medina Capital, led by former Terremark CEO Manuel Medina, teamed with investors including BC Partners to buy the data center portfolio of CenturyLink for $2.15 billion. It was at that time one of several data center players seeking to build a colocation business atop a portfolio of data centers spun off by telecom companies. This April, Data Center Frontier's Rich Miller reported that Cyxtera Technologies was reportedly fielding interest from suitors as it sought to reduce its debt load. Data Center Dynamics at that time shared that Cyxtera was exploring options for a sale or capital raise, citing a Bloomberg story that said private equity suitors were studying the company's operations. Shares of Cyxtera had fallen sharply in value during that timeframe and were trading at 31 cents a share at one point, giving the company a market capitalization of about $55 million, a far cry from the $3.4 billion valuation placed on the company when it went public in 2021 through a merger with Starboard Value Acquisition Corp. In May, as shares of Cyxtera fell to new lows, DCF reported lenders for the company said they would provide the colocation provider with $50 million in new funding, allowing it more time to arrange a sale or line up new capital. In June, the colocation provider filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. After working for months to find a buyer or reduce its debt load, the company decided it would now restructure through a pre-packaged bankruptcy. The Chapter 11 filing was part of an arrangement with its lenders, who retained the right to gain a controlling equity interest in the company under terms of a restructuring agreement. At the time of the bankruptcy filing, some of the company's lenders committed to provide $200 million in financing to enable Cyxtera to continue operating as it restructures. "Cyxtera expects to use the Chapter 11 process to strengthen the company's financial position, meaningfully deleverage its balance sheet and facilitate the business's long-term success," the company said in a press release." More details have been made available on Cyxtera's restructuring web site. Cyxtera subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Germany and Singapore are not included in the bankruptcy case, which was filed in New Jersey. Dgtl Infra's Mary Zhang has done significant recent reporting over the summer on the story of Cyxtera's existing lease rejections in wake of the bankruptcy filing, as well as charting the company's timeline extension for its bankruptcy-led sale process into late September. In his June reporting on Cyxtera's bankruptcy filing, DCF's Miller noted that: "Since Cyxtera leases many of its data centers, Cyxtera's Chapter 11 filing creates a potential challenge for its landlords. Cyxtera leases space in 15 facilities operated by Digital Realty, representing $61.5 million in annual revenue, or about 1.7 percent of Digital's annual revenue. It also leases space in 6 data centers owned by Digital Core REIT, a Singapore-based public company sponsored by Digital Realty. That includes two sites in Los Angeles, three in Silicon Valley and one in Frankfurt. The $16.3 million in annual rent from Cyxtera represents 22.3 percent of revenue for Digital Core REIT. A bankruptcy filing provides debtors with the opportunity to reject leases to reduce their real estate costs. In its press release, Cyxtera noted that it "is continuing to evaluate its data center footprint, consistent with its commitment to optimizing operations." An August report from Bloomberg stated that Cyxtera had drawn interest for its assets from multiple parties, including Brookfield Infrastructure Partners and Digital Realty Trust Inc., according to people with knowledge of the situation. as reported by Bloomberg's Reshmi Basu. In a recent email to this editor regarding Cyxtera, DCF's Miller opined further: "The key questions for Cyxtera are really all about the bankruptcy outcome, and where that stands. The future could be very different for Cyxtera depending who the winning bidder is and whether they would reject leases. For example, Digital Realty is reported to be one of the bidders. That makes sense, as Cyxtera leases 12 facilities from them and DLR has a vested interest in protecting that income. But if Digital wins the auction, do they keep leasing space in Cyxtera's many non-Digital sites? Or do they reject those leases and consolidate? The auction winner will guide future strategy for Cyxtera. And it could be very different if it's a private equity firm vs. a strategic buyer like Digital Realty." On August 7, concurrent with its business update for Q2, Cyxtera announced that it had reached a key milestone in its Chapter 11 process by filing a proposed plan of reorganization with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey, and said it had reached an agreement with its lenders to optimize the company's capital structure and reduce its pre-filing funded debt by more than $950 million. In its Q2 update, the company said it had delivered solid growth in total revenue, recurring revenue, core revenue and transaction adjusted EBITDA. Cyxtera's August 7 press release added that negotiations around the company's sale alternative remained active. According to a press release, the proposed reorganization plan is supported by certain of Cyxtera's lenders who collectively hold over two-thirds of the company's outstanding first lien debt, and are parties to Cyxtera's previously announced restructuring support agreement. The company said the proposed plan provides flexibility for the company to pursue a balance sheet recapitalization or a sale of the business. Cyxtera noted that if the plan is approved and a recapitalization is consummated, the lenders have committed to support a holistic restructuring of the company's balance sheet. Such a restructuring would eliminate more than $950 million of Cyxtera's pre-filing debt and provide the company with enhanced financial flexibility to invest in its business for the benefit of its customers and partners. For Q2 of 2023, Cyxtera said its total revenue increased by $14.9 million, or 8.1% YoY, to $199.0 million in the second quarter of 2023. On a constant currency basis, the company's total revenue increased by $15.1 million, or 8.2% YoY. Recurring revenue increased by $15.8 million, or 9.1% YoY, to $190.0 million in the second quarter. Cyxtera added that its core revenue increased by $17.4 million, or 10.3% YoY, to $186.2 million in the second quarter. Finally, the company said its transaction Adjusted EBITDA increased by $6.4 million, or 10.7%, to $66.4 million and increased by $6.5 million, or 10.9% YoY, on a constant currency basis, in the second quarter. Carlos Sagasta, Cyxtera's Chief Financial Officer, said, “We are pleased to have delivered another quarter of solid growth across the business, underscoring the strength of our offering and the value we create for our global customers. We expect to continue building on this momentum as we successfully complete the process to strengthen our financial position for the long term.” The press release added that in either a recapitalization or sale scenario, the company remains on track to emerge from the court-supervised process no later than the fall of this year. The company said it had received multiple qualified bids to date. Final bids from interested parties in the sale process were originally due on August 18, a deadline which came and went. An auction slated for August 30 was also cancelled. Nelson Fonseca, Cyxtera's Chief Executive Officer, commented, “We continue to make important progress in our court-supervised process, while demonstrating solid performance across our business. Filing this plan with the support of our lenders provides us a path to emerge in a significantly stronger financial position.” Here are links to some recent DCF articles on Cyxtera: Colocation Provider Cyxtera Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Cyxtera Gets $50 Million Funding, More Time to Seek a Buyer As Stock Price Slumps, Cyxtera Reportedly Mulling Capital Raise or Sale Cyxtera Goes Public as Starboard SPAC Acquisition Closes Cyxtera to Go Public Through $3.4 Billion Merger With Starboard SPAC

Paul Hunter, managing director of North America at HPE, joins Changing Channel's Larry Walsh to discuss the traditional data center hardware company's transition to the Everything-as-a-Service model and what it meant to its channel program. In recent years, vendors across the tech industry have wholeheartedly embraced the Everything-as-a-Service (XaaS) model. This revolutionary approach involves selling technology in various forms through subscription and consumption-based models, which offer numerous benefits. The appeal of this model is undeniable: It generates recurring and predictable revenue while eliminating the uncertainties of sales cycles. While companies that were born in the cloud or have a service-based foundation find it relatively straightforward to adopt the XaaS model, traditional hardware vendors and some software publishers face significant challenges. These companies have long-established transactional sales practices deeply ingrained among partners and customers. Convincing sellers to shift their product positioning to a service-oriented approach and embrace new compensation plans is no easy task. Likewise, getting partners to adopt product sales that require presenting different value propositions and costs can be equally challenging. However, the lure of capturing recurring revenue is simply irresistible. As a result, many hardware vendors are undertaking the transition to XaaS sales models and channel programs, albeit at a slower pace than anticipated due to change management complexities. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) stands out as a prime example of a company that has strategically embraced the service-based model. HPE introduced its cloud-based GreenLake platform in 2017 and set a primary objective of generating the majority of its revenue through service and hybrid infrastructure sales. Over the past five years, HPE has continuously restructured its internal organization and external channel programs to align with the XaaS model. Its efforts are paying off, as the company is well on its way to achieving its revenue goals through service sales in the near future. HPE's accelerating transition to XaaS couldn't come at a better time. According to IDC, a considerable 71% of enterprises are shifting their workloads from public clouds to hybrid and on-premises infrastructure. This move is driven by the desire for enhanced administrative capabilities and cost control. Simultaneously, partners are identifying increasing opportunities to provide managed and professional services alongside XaaS and hybrid engagements. HPE recognizes these trends as significant drivers of growth. In this edition of Changing Channels, we bring you an insightful discussion between Paul Hunter, the managing director of North America for HPE, and Channelnomics Larry Walsh. They delve into the vast opportunities presented to vendors and partners by the XaaS model, highlighting the successes and setbacks that HPE has experienced during the transition process. Moreover, they provide invaluable insights into how businesses can capitalize on the flourishing XaaS and hybrid infrastructure markets.   Follow us, Like us, and Subscribe! Equinix to “Adjust the Thermostat” to Optimise Data Centre Energy Use

Equinix, Inc. , the world's digital infrastructure company™, has announced its commitment to reducing its overall power use by increasing operating temperature ranges within its data centres – the first such commitment by an operator of colocation data centres. Starting immediately, Equinix will begin to define a multi-year global roadmap for thermal operations within its data centres aimed at achieving significantly more efficient cooling and decreased carbon impacts, all while continuing to deliver the premium operating environment Equinix is known for. Over time, this initiative is expected to enable thousands of Equinix customers to reduce the Scope 3 carbon emissions associated with their data centre operations as supply chain sustainability becomes an increasingly important part of the overall environmental initiatives of today's businesses. IT equipment within data centres, including routers, servers and storage arrays, emit high levels of heat that requires data centres to be fitted with robust cooling systems to remove that heat. “Most datacentres operate within restrictive temperature and humidity bands, resulting in environments that are unnecessarily cooler than required,” said Rob Brothers, Program Vice President, Datacentre Services, IDC. “Equinix will work with enterprises to change the way we think about operating temperatures within datacentre environments and how the industry can ensure optimal service levels for mission-critical digital infrastructure, while improving data centre efficiencies. With this initiative, Equinix will play a key role in driving change in the industry and help shape the overall sustainability story we all need to participate in.” “As a long-time partner, we are pleased to see that Equinix is driving efficient data centre operations through smart, sustainable operating practices,” said Sue Preston, vice president and general manager, Advisory and Professional Services, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). “Optimising data centre temperatures results in more efficient operations, benefitting businesses and the planet. Through the HPE GreenLake alliance, both HPE and Equinix offer a comprehensive, cloud-smart and sustainable customer solution.” As a part of this new efficiency initiative, Equinix expects to operate its facilities closer to 27°C (80°F), aligning operating limits across its global data centre portfolio with the globally accepted boundaries of the A1A standards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). When combined with existing Equinix initiatives such as optimising the use of outside air temperatures to cool its data centres, this new initiative will contribute to the overall sustainability of its data centres through efficiency improvements measured through Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). PUE represents the total amount of power being used by a data centre divided by the power used to run the IT equipment within the data centre, providing an industry standard for data centre energy efficiency. “Our cooling systems account for approximately 25% of our total energy usage globally,” said Raouf Abdel, Executive Vice President, Global Operations for Equinix. “With this new initiative, we can intelligently adjust the thermostat in our data centres in the same way that consumers do in their homes. Once rolled out across our current global data centre footprint, we anticipate energy efficiency improvements of as much as 10% in various locations.” “Data centres are critical to our daily lives, housing the equipment and interconnecting the businesses that fuel our digital lives – from online shopping to sending emails to streaming movies and video calls,” said Jon Lin, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Data Centre Services for Equinix. “As more than 10,000 businesses globally rely on Equinix's digital infrastructure, it plays a critical role in their supply chains. This initiative, once deployed, has the potential ...

Technology company Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is set to relocate its headquarters from San Jose, California, to Houston, Texas, by 2022. In a statement, the company said that it chose to move to Houston due to the city's diverse talents. Relocating to Texas will also save the company money because the cost of real estate and talent acquisition there is more affordable and less competitive compared to California. HPE added that it will still keep its San Jose office, where some of its San Francisco Bay area sites will be consolidated. According to the company, the move will not result in any employee layoffs. HPE's relocation from California is notable because the company was one of the founders of Silicon Valley, the world's major technology and startup hub. It is home to around 2,000 tech companies, many of which are industry leaders. Before it became HPE, the company was first known as Hewlett-Packard (HP). It was founded by business partners William Hewlett and Dave Packard in 1939. HP created its first product, a device used to test audio equipment, in the same year. In 2015, HP split into HP Inc., which manufactures printers, laptops, and personal computers, and HPE. While HPE is the most notable company to move its headquarters from Silicon Valley, it is far from the only one. Data analytics software firm Palantir Technologies and cybersecurity firm Tanium have also left the area. Many companies have explained that the switch to remote work led them to move to states with lower costs of living, as employees are no longer required to go to their offices.

He also knew it was where the future was headed, because according to Minal, “I quickly realized, EVERYTHING is going to be related to computer science.”His pursuit led him to get his Master's in computer science, and eventually, because he wanted to be able to speak the language of business, he obtained his MBA.Minal is the Director of Process, Governance, Tools & Metrics at Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), but he's in the unique position to be able to speak on two very different program management fields: using waterfall techniques to build hardware and using Agile to build software.  He gives one of the best two-minute explanations on what Agile is, and how it differs from infrastructure projects that I've ever heard, and if you've got any interest in either, you should listen to the full episode. Listen to the podcast for all the insights and to discover his recommendations on leadership. 1:20 - Minal's background and getting his start as a Mechanical Engineer 5:23 - Minal's Aha moment 8:00 -  The boom of as-a-service businesses 8:45 - Why software as-a-service is still not working11:02 - The difference between public cloud and private cloud13:13 - Metrics - What it means to him, and how you need to have data set up. 14:19 - “What executives need is insights”15:00 - The biggest challenge with data 16:40 - How to get the right metrics in place21:00 -  The best explanation of Agile I've ever heard30:35 - Minal on leadershipShow Notes: Join the community at The Omar Project The Executive Arena: Mastering the Art of Corporate Politics, Perceptional Messaging, and Other Secrets to Success in Today's Corporate WorldWho Moved My Cheese?: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life  The First 90 Days: Proven Strategies for Getting Up to Speed Faster and Smarter  Interested in rebranding yourself in another industry? We Live in a VUCA Environment (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) so you have to be extremely adaptable. Organizations that don’t adapt, die. Tweetable Quotes: Adapt or die. In the future, a lot of importance will be placed on skills and re-skilling rather than the current focus on education, degrees, and the more traditional mindset. Skills are not enough, they must be relevant skills. Kubernetes and containers are obviously much talked about in the IT world today, but how to manage the stateful applications and data that run on top of cloud native platforms is also — especially for operations — important. The process includes managing the data from legacy stateful applications as organizations make the shift to highly distributed containerized environments. In this edition of The New Stack Makers podcast, Alex Williams, founder and publisher of The New Stack, discusses the concepts of big data, storage and stateful applications on Kubernetes. Guests Tom Phelan, fellow, big data and storage organization, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE); and Joel Baxter, distinguished engineer, HPE, draw from their deep experience managing stateful applications and data in containerized environments. They also discuss KubeDirector, an open source platform for running non-cloud native stateful applications on Kubernetes.
