Tom welcomes back economist John Williams, the founder of Shadow Government Statistics to discusses the current state of the economy and inflation under the Trump administration. Williams highlights the disconnect between market optimism and underlying economic weakness, emphasizing that while GDP growth appears strong, key indicators like retail sales, industrial production, and housing are lagging or negative year-over-year. He critiques the government's reporting methods, arguing that metrics such as GDP and CPI are manipulated to downplay inflation and inflate economic health. For instance, Williams points out that the consumer price index (CPI) has been redefined since the 1980s to suppress reported inflation rates by about 8 percentage points. This manipulation masks the true cost of living increases, particularly felt in housing costs. Williams also discusses the role of the Federal Reserve, noting its focus on maintaining banking stability over controlling inflation or economic growth. Despite efforts to reduce liquidity, the money supply remains excessively high, fueling inflationary pressures. He warns that this could lead to hyperinflation and a potential collapse of the dollar's value, with gold serving as a key indicator of these risks. Looking ahead, Williams predicts continued inflation and economic stagnation, with the possibility of a market crash or deeper recession within the next year. He underscores the importance of understanding inflation through alternative measures like gold prices, which reflect true economic conditions more accurately than official reports. Tom welcomes back economist John Williams, the founder of Shadow Government Statistics to explore the manipulation and misrepresentation of economic data by government institutions like the Fed and Treasury. Williams expresses concerns over the intentional distortion of inflation and GDP statistics, which can deceive the public and impact their decisions, potentially harming the economy and markets. A notable example is the strategic petroleum reserve being drained to artificially lower gasoline prices before elections. Accurate data, Williams asserts, is vital for informed policymaking and avoiding exacerbated economic issues. Inaccurate inflation statistics are in part leading to financial hardships for many households. Despite this issue's potential political significance, no candidate has addressed it. He also explores the consequences of this discrepancy and its impact on consumer sentiment, suggesting that a future political campaign platform focusing on this could gain substantial support. Conversing about the potential economic pain or increased debt needed to rectify these issues, Williams acknowledges the challenges but stresses their necessity for improving conditions for the average American. Williams raises concerns about the reliability of reported GDP figures, arguing they are heavily manipulated and bear little connection to real economic conditions. He highlights the disparity between reported GDP and underlying economic indicators like retail sales, industrial production, and housing starts, attributing this gap to political constructs and the Fed's money supply expansion. Williams warns of potential risks from an inflationary recession or depression and encourages individuals to protect themselves by holding physical assets like gold, real estate, or other hard assets. He concludes that average citizens should be concerned about economic instability arising from these factors. John suggests that a recession already began during the pandemic and consumers should use common sense when evaluating government information. Tom welcomes economist John Williams, the founder of Shadow Government Statistics to the show. Williams shares his background in economics and economic modeling, which led him to scrutinize government statistics due to their potential inaccuracies. He became particularly concerned with employment data revisions and manipulation. Despite improvements, he remains skeptical about inconsistencies' impact on forecasting accuracy. Williams discusses the misrepresentation of inflation through changes in reporting methodologies, such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This underreporting of inflation affects cost-of-living adjustments and pension payouts, leaving retirees facing significant financial challenges. The pandemic exacerbated these issues with distorted CPI reporting. He also criticizes the current economic situation's representation through GDP growth rates, which may not accurately represent underlying economic conditions. Inflation can lead to an increase in reported real GDP without actual sales growth. The excessive money supply injected into the economy during the pandemic is another major contributor to inflation. Despite attempts to control inflation through interest rate hikes, the economy has suffered negative growth in critical sectors like retail sales, industrial production, housing, and employment. The Federal Reserve prioritizes the banking system over the economy, making high interest rates more beneficial for banks than for consumers. The historically large disparity between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Gross Domestic Income (GDI) further highlights a weak economy. John predicts that despite rising GDP, there is a potential worsening in the next six months with underlying economic downturn and potential high or even hyperinflation. He advises holding precious metals like physical gold and silver as a hedge against inflation and preserving purchasing power during these uncertain times. Gold has been an effective hedge against inflation over the last 40 years, although it can also be manipulated. Williams believes that the Federal Reserve will continue to intervene with monetary policies despite their inflationary effects. He encourages listeners to visit shadowgovernmentstats.com for more information and to contact him directly at johnwilliams@shadowstatts.com. His website was recently taken down, but the old site remains accessible for background information. Talking Points From This Episode Government statistics, particularly inflation data, can be manipulated and underreported, leading to inaccurate economic representations. The Federal Reserve's priority is keeping the banking system afloat rather than addressing underlying economic issues, causing negative consequences for consumers. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) may not accurately represent economic conditions as it can be artificially boosted by inflation and government interventions. Precious metals like gold serve as a hedge against inflation and help preserve purchasing power during uncertain economic times. He received an A.B. in Economics, cum laude, from Dartmouth College, and an M.B.A. from Dartmouth‘s Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, where he was named an Edward Tuck Scholar. During his career as a consulting economist in the last 33 years, he has worked with individuals as well with as Fortune 500 companies. Out of necessity, he became a specialist in government economic reporting. An early client's large manufacturer of commercial airplanes had developed a model for predicting revenue passenger miles, a primary sales forecasting tool. Heavily dependent on the GNP (now GDP) out of the Department of Commerce, the model suddenly stopped working, and the client asked Williams to fix it. The GNP numbers were faulty, he corrected them (official reporting was similarly revised a couple of years later), and the model worked again, at least for a while, until changes in GNP methodology eventually made the underlying data worthless. That began a lengthy process exploring the history and nature of economic reporting and interviewing key people involved in the system from the early days of government reporting through the present. For a number of years, he conducted surveys among business economists as to the quality of government statistics. The vast majority thought it was pretty bad, with survey results leading to 1989 front-page stories in the New York Times and Investors Daily, considerable coverage in the broadcast media and a joint meeting with representatives of all the U.S. government‘s statistical agencies. Nonetheless, the quality of government reporting has deteriorated sharply in the last couple of decades. Problems include changes in reporting methodologies that have pushed headline economic and inflation results outside the realm of real-world or common experience. Over the decades, Williams has given thousands of presentations on the U.S. economic outlook and on approaches to analyzing economic data, to clients "large and small” including talks with members of the business, banking, government, press, academic, brokerage and investment communities, as well as having provided testimony before the U.S. Congress. Public response to a 2004 series of articles on the quality of government statistics was so strong that he started Shadow Government Statistics, a newsletter first published on ShadowStats.com in 2004. Well, honestly, it's never a first career. It's always a transition. My version, what I want to do and what I help people do, is be a superhero using superpowers for super pay. So the reason I say it's never really a very first career is because you have to do something to build expert skills. So that's being a superhero with a superpower." On Consulting in "Retirement" "I think for a second career, kind of a retirement age career, it's much harder at this point to figure out what superpower am I going to sell? Because by now we all have a lot of superpowers, right? We've accumulated a lot of experience. So it's a little bit tricky. And I think people have some heartburn narrowing down and focusing a little bit. So what I encourage people to do is find that intersection of what you're really good at, your deep experience and expertise - what you really love to do. There may be some things that you're really good at, but boy, you don't want to do them anymore. I worked with a client who had been a CPA, and then jumped off into the commercial side. But all of her jobs had been in Finance and Accounting. And she said, I am sick of Finance and Accounting. I want to do something a little bit different. So there may be pieces in our experience and expertise that we don't like as much. So what are your deep experiences and expertise? What do you really love? And the piece that you can't miss is: what will the market pay for?" On What Makes Consulting a Good Fit "The most important thing is wanting to do it. You do have to go into it realizing that you really are committing to that ongoing networking, marketing and business development. But I'll tell you it's really about relationships. By this point in our lives, most of us are pretty good at it and we get to choose who we have those relationships with. So some of those nightmare people that we've had to work with all these years, we can let some of those people go - and hopefully there's just a few of them. For those of us thinking about retirement,

He received an A.B. in Economics, cum laude, from Dartmouth College in 1971, and was awarded a M.B.A. from Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School of Business Administration in 1972, where he was named an Edward Tuck Scholar. During his career as a consulting economist, John has worked with individuals as well as Fortune 500 companies.John has been a private consulting economist and, out of necessity, had to become a specialist in government economic reporting. One of his early clients was a large manufacturer of commercial airplanes, who had developed an econometric model for predicting revenue passenger miles. The level of revenue passenger miles was their primary sales forecasting tool, and the model was heavily dependent on the GNP (now GDP) as reported by the Department of Commerce. Suddenly, their model stopped working, and they asked John if he could fix it. He realised the GNP numbers were faulty, corrected them for his client (official reporting was similarly revised a couple of years later) and the model worked again, at least for a while, until GNP methodological changes eventually made the underlying data worthless. That began a lengthy process of exploring the history and nature of economic reporting and in interviewing key people involved in the process from the early days of government reporting through the present. For a number of years he conducted surveys among business economists as to the quality of government statistics (the vast majority thought it was pretty bad), and his results led to front page stories in 1989 in the New York Times and Investors Daily (now Investors Business Daily), considerable coverage in the broadcast media and a joint meeting with representatives of all the government's statistical agencies. Nonetheless, the quality of government reporting has deteriorated sharply in the last couple of decades. Reporting problems have included methodological changes to economic reporting that have pushed headline economic and inflation results out of the realm of real-world or common experience.Over the decades, well in excess of 1,000 presentations have been given on the economic outlook, or on approaches to analyzing economic data, to clients—large and small—including talks with members of the business, banking, government, press, academic, brokerage and investment communities. John has also have provided testimony before Congress. This episode of Flashback Friday was originally published: April 4, 2012 Join Jason Hartman and consulting economist, John Williams, for a discussion about how government statistics don’t paint the whole picture of economic conditions. Many years ago, John realized that GNP (now GDP) numbers were faulty, causing his clients’ sales forecasting models to no longer work. This eventually led John into lengthy research of the history and nature of the government’s economic reporting. John explains how the numbers reported by the government hide important information; for example, true unemployment rates, which fail to include the unemployed no longer receiving unemployment benefits and those who are underemployed. Inflation statistics are misrepresented, which affects GDP. Following changes in CPI methodology, the Consumer Price Index understates inflation significantly. John points out that cost of living increases were based on inflation data, but with the numbers so skewed, the increases are no longer representative of the actual costs. He provides a history of how these changes came about and how it has affected commerce, social security and payroll. John feels roughly seven percentage points should be added to real inflation rates in our current economy. Walter J. "John" Williams was born in 1949. He received an A.B. in Economics, cum laude, from Dartmouth College in 1971, and was awarded a M.B.A. from Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School of Business Administration in 1972, where he was named an Edward Tuck Scholar. During his career as a consulting economist, John has worked with individuals as well as Fortune 500 companies. He has been doing private consulting for nearly 30 years and is a specialist in government economic reporting. John’s research into the government’s statistics took place over a number of years, during which he conducted surveys among business economists as to the quality of government statistics, and his results led to front page stories in the New York Times and Investors Business Daily, considerable coverage in the broadcast media and a joint meeting with representatives of all the government’s statistical agencies. Despite minor changes to the system, government reporting has deteriorated sharply in the last decade or so. At the request of his old friend, the late Doug Gillespie, John wrote a series of articles on the quality of government statistics. The response to those writings (the Primer Series) was so strong that he started Shadow Government Statistics in 2004. He publishes a newsletter as part of his private economic consulting services. It is pretty much inarguable that happy customers are a prerequisite for business success. And that’s true in health care as much as it’s true in every other industry—although in health care, sometimes the customer is also called a patient. Provider organizations like Cleveland Clinic are really walking the walk when it comes to creating amazing patient/customer experiences; so are other leading provider organizations. But in other segments of the health care industry, maybe they haven’t quite connected the dots between the idea of satisfying customer needs in the abstract and then what that actually looks like relative to a strategic approach. Let me give you an example—certainly not all pharmaceutical manufacturers: Here’s where key performance indicators, or KPIs, come in. Everything we do should really be derived from what customers need and expect. This could be considered our North Star. And that’s why creating KPIs that focus on how well we are doing delivering on great customer experiences over the long run delivers superior market returns and patient outcomes and patient satisfaction. My guest today on the podcast is Jon Skinner, who is an executive vice president at The Verde Group. Jon’s message is that your KPIs—if they are done right, in any case—should tell you if you are delivering on a set of customer expectations that are going to lead you to your vision of what success looks like. The Verde Group is a market research firm that specializes in quantifying the customer experience, in case you have not heard of them. I met Jon, by the way, at the PanAgora Pharma CX conference this past spring. By the way, in this interview, the acronym HCP is used. In case you are unfamiliar, HCP stands for health care professional and it can mean anyone from a physician to a nurse to any other advanced practice clinician. You can learn more at verdegroup.com. Jon Skinner is executive vice president with The Verde Group, a customer experience (CX) research consultancy focusing on the financial quantification of customer experiences. Jon works with market leaders across the pharmaceutical and health care space to help them identify the specific customer experiences most consequential to revenue and share growth, and then to develop CX improvements that sustainably grow customer value, build brand equity, and develop customer-centric cultures. Jon started his CX career at Digitas, where he led the Customer Management Group and advised clients on customer value management, loyalty strategy, and channel execution. His general management experience includes executive leadership positions at Excite@Home, Webroot Software, and New England Business Services. Jon holds an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. 02:48 Quantifying the customer experience and KPIs. 03:19 “What behavior change do you want to stimulate?” 03:29 Two overarching strategic outcomes. 04:41 How a pharma or health care entity correlates a CX improvement to a social outcome. 06:18 “You need to have a thoughtful portfolio.” 08:16 Examples of nonintuitive creativity. 11:53 Conspiring purposefully or by accident to create patient experiences. 14:42 Responding to changing conditions in real time. 15:14 “You can’t go wrong.” 16:06 KPIs are incredibly powerful and potentially damaging when tied to rewards. 16:28 Being thoughtful of compensation programs. 16:51 Why adherence is an important focus. 21:42 Experiences, quantifying experience, KPIs, changing customer experience, and achieving new outcomes. 22:33 “The best place to focus is on what’s going wrong.” You can learn more at verdegroup.com. #Quantifying the #customerexperience and #KPIs.
