NANCIE'S LINKS: Website Facebook YouTube Substack Instagram Threads Twitter LinkedIn Virginia Brock's Georgia-Style Brunswick Stew Ingredients 3½ lbs boneless pork, Boston butt, shoulder, or country-style ribs 2-3 Tbsp vegetable oil 2 lbs ground beef 1 lb ground turkey 1 can (28-oz) whole peeled plum tomatoes, with juice 1 can (28-oz) chopped tomatoes, with juice 1 bottle (20-oz) hickory-smoked barbecue sauce 1 can (14.5 oz) cream-style corn 1 can (14.5 oz) whole-kernel corn, or 1½ cups frozen corn 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp hot sauce, like Tabasco or Texas Pete 1 Tbsp black pepper 2 tsp salt 2 cans (15-oz) sweet peas like LeSeur, drained Directions Cut pork in chunks, place in large stockpot or Dutch oven, and add watrr to cover. Over high heat, bring to a boil and cook, skimming off foam as it rises, for 20 minutes. Lower heat to maintain a gentle simmer, and cook until pork is tender enough to pull apart with two forks, 2-3 hours. Transfer pork to a large bowl or platter, reserving stock for stew. Allow to cool to room temperature; then pull apart and roughly chop into small pieces. Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add vegetable oil, swirling to coat pan. Crumble in ground beef and ground turkey and cook, turning and pressing to help cook evenly. When meat is cooked through, remove from heat and set aside. Combine cooked pork, beef, and turkey in a stockpot or large Dutch oven. Add 2 cups pork stock, reserving remaining stock to use if needed. Add tomatoes with juice, barbecue sauce, cream-style and whole-kernel corn, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, pepper, and salt. Bring to a lively boil over medium-high heat, stirring often. Lower heat to maintain a gentle but visible simmer, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Stir and scrape bottom often to avoid stew sticking or burning. Add more pork stock, if stew becomes dry or starts to stick. (Use chicken broth or water if stock is gone). When stew is ready, gently stir in the drained peas. Cook 5 minutes more and serve hot in bowls, with saltine crackers. Women Beyond a Certain Age is an award-winning weekly podcast with Denise Vivaldo. As we close out the month of February, it's time to look forward to "March Madness" and some exciting basketball. A man who talks about the sport in the daily podcasts he hosts is my guest this week. A worship arts college professor by day...we talk about sports helping people get to know Jesus...controversial court storming lately in college basketball...his passion for music ministry...our favorite team UNC, and more. (2:35) Isaac Schade, host of "Locked on College Basketball" (and same one for the Tar Heels too), talks about why people love the sport, the parity, and why have there been more upsets this season. (7:52) With a Duke star having a minor injury after Wake Forest upset them and fans stormed the court...should it be banned or regulated? It's been a national debate. Isaac has some ideas, but not ones that take the magic away for students. From aiming to be a pro baseball player, (13:08) how did he shift from that dream to writing about sports and focusing on music? God used that sport, he says, to get him to certain school where he got his ministry degree. And he believes God is using his sports media jobs for Isaac to be a witness, shine a light. In his younger years as a worship pastor, he and friends also put out an album and toured as the "Isaac Schade Band." His wife is also in ministry as the community impact minister at their church in Missouri. (22:10) With all these jobs - his main one being professor at Ozark Christian College in Joplin MO - it's about finding a balance, putting his family first, watching plenty of college basketball too. Talking about that sport on podcasts, he hopes, can lead to faith conversations as well. Isaac loves how sports can connect us! Making a trip earlier this week to Chapel Hill NC, (30:04) he talks about the atmosphere at the Dean Dome, it being surreal rubbing shoulders with Carolina basketball legends, watching a friend's JV team play on the famed court, then seeing RJ Davis scoring a record 42 points - the most scored by anyone ever in that arena. (39:40) Hosting the podcasts also helps him relate to students at his college, while helping him better teaching technology related to music/worship. Born in England, Isaac's parents were missionaries. (44:16) We close out our chat with some of his predictions, hopes for the last few weeks of this college basketball season and for the North Carolina Tar Heels, saying he thinks the upcoming NCAA Tournament will be "bonkers." (55:00) And I finish the episode with a prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. For more info and listen to any previous episodes, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.

Theologydoctor - Posts about God and the Bible and HopeDashboardIsrael, a Cup of Trembling3 talks given at Calvary Chapel of Chapel Hill, NC on the evening of December 6, 2023ARTHUR P WOLINSKYDEC 7, 2023What About the Jewish People?Hi Folks. Many of you know that I'm Jewish, the son of two Jewish parents. In view of the October 7 massacre of many Jewish people in Israel, I want to share several things with you this evening.I want to talk with you about the root cause of antisemitism, about the root cause for the Jewish people's resistance to believing in Jesus, about whether the Law of Moses applies to Jewish people today, and about the future for the Jewish people as a Nation and for individual Jews today.I. What is the Root Cause of Antisemitism?Remember how in the Garden of Eden the Lord gave Adam one commandment? The Lord said to Adam “You may eat of any plant or tree in the Garden except for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. In the day that you eat of it you will surely die”. Adam communicated this knowledge to Eve and she was tricked by the serpent who was inhabited by Satan and Eve ate of the fruit and shared it with Adam who also ate. Right then, sin entered the entire human race and with sin came death. Everything changed and everything was corrupted. Right then God spoke to the serpent, the Devil:Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall crush your head, And you shall bruise His heel."The Seed of the woman was and is the Deliverer. He is the Messiah and this prophecy makes it clear that one day the Messiah will crush the head of the enemy of humanity, Satan. That will be the end of him.As the story unfolds through Scripture we are told that God chose Abraham and his physical descendants including the 12 tribes of Israel to be His special people and we are told that the Messiah would come from the tribe of Judah and from King David. As the enemy learned that the Messiah was to come through the Jewish people, the enemy tried to prevent Messiah from coming into the world through the attempted killing of all Jewish babies in ancient Egypt. He was unsuccessful however. Moses was born and survived to lead his people out of Egypt as a Nation. Later the evil Haman in Persia tried to annihilate all the Jewish people and he also failed. This is celebrated in the festival of Purim which Jewish people still celebrate today. Later yet, in about 175 BC, a Syrian king named Antiochus tried to destroy all the Jewish people and he committed something called the abomination of desolation in the temple. He too failed and the victory of the Jewish people over Antiochus is celebrated in the festival of lights, Chanukah. And there were many more attempts, all of which failed. So the Messiah was born of the virgin Miriam, a direct descendant of King David, in Bethlehem, and He was crucified in about 33 AD. The Messiah was born to die, to be the ultimate blood sacrifice for His people and for all people, that whoever would accept Him would never die but would have eternal life. He fulfilled the Law of Moses – by obeying it completely – and He promised that one day He would return. Then Satan's head would be crushed. The Messiah was and is Yeshua of Natzeret, or Jesus of Nazareth. So, Messiah came and He died. What could the Enemy do to prevent the return of the Messiah? Jesus said something to the Jewish people, from Jerusalem, several days before He went to the cross:Matthew 23:37-39 (NKJV) "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! [38] See! Your house is left to you desolate; [39] for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, 'BLESSED is HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!' "So before the Jewish people can see Jesus again, before He can return, the Jewish people must say Blessed is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord, a Messianic verse from a Messianic Psalm, Psalm 118. The enemy knows this of course and so, ever since the cross, he has been systematically trying to totally annihilate the Jewish people, so that there would be not even one single Jew who could say this. This is the root cause of antisemitism. This has been brought into reality through many literal attempts to kill the Jews. Hitler's Holocaust is a major example of this and all the wars against Israel since 1948 up to and including the massacre by Hamas on October 7 are examples caused by Satan trying to fulfill his strategy of total annihilation of the Jewish people. He has not succeeded, and he never will succeed. We hear today of a New Antisemitism. What is that? The person or people who practice this new antisemitism say something like this: We hate Israel. Although I'm not crazy about Jewish people, I wish them no harm, except for the ones in Israel because their country is oppressing the Palestinians and stealing their land. The Jews have no right to Israel, and they are practicing apartheid. What Hamas did is understandable!Folks, I believe that Satan has goals, strategies, and tactics. I believe that his main goals are to be like God or even above God, to seek revenge against God for throwing him out of heaven, and to prevent the Messiah's return so that his, Satan's, head won't be crushed. One of Satan's major strategies is to destroy Israel and all the Jewish people, for reasons we just discussed, and the October 7 massacre was Satan's latest tactic. I don't think that Satan's goals and strategies change, but his tactics constantly change. And he is relentless. When one tactic is defeated, he comes up with 3 more. We must fight him with all our strength, but this is a spiritual battle – we wrestle not against flesh and blood, Ephesians 6 - and only the Messiah can bring the final victory and He will.II. What is the root cause for the Jewish people's resistance to believe in Jesus? The cause is supernatural. Let me read you two Scripture verses from the Apostle Paul's Letter to the Romans in the New Testament:Romans 11:25-26 (NKJV) For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. [26] And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "THE DELIVERER WILL COME OUT OF ZION, AND HE WILL TURN AWAY UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB;Folks, that is the reason, spiritual blindness. A partial spiritual blindness has happened to Israel. A better translation is temporary blindness. It is temporary and it has happened to the entire Nation except for a small number of people, the remnant. Why has God done this? So that the full number of Gentiles to be saved will be saved. When this full number of Gentiles is saved, through the Messiah, then and only then will the entire Nation of Israel be saved – all at once. It will be like life from the dead! But please be very much aware that Satan is quite interested in killing Gentiles too, although they are not as high a priority for him as killing Jews is.If the Jewish people, as a Nation, had accepted Yeshua when He first came, He would have died then to pay the price for sin, He would have set up His Millennial Kingdom and perhaps the great mass of non-Jewish people would never be saved. But this was never God's plan. Let me read you another 2 verses:Romans 11:28-29 (NKJV) Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. [29] For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. These verses explain why Gentiles are spiritually indebted to the Jewish people. Now, how does this work itself out? Two examples:Rashi (1040-1105) – a very famous French rabbi, revered by many Orthodox Jews today including members of Chabad, proclaimed that the famous Isaiah passage (52:13-53:12) describes a suffering servant, but not the Messiah. Let me read part of the passage to you:Isaiah 53:3-5,7-10 NKJVHe is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. [4] Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. [5] But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. [7] He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. [8] He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. [9] And they made His grave with the wicked—But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. [10] Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.Rashi taught that this Man, despised and rejected, was the Nation of Israel. He was not a man, according to Rashi. He was not the Messiah. Instead, he was the Nation of Israel. To this day this faulty exegesis by Rashi leads Jewish people away from seeing that Yeshua is the Messiah.Maimonides (1138-1204), a very famous rabbi, philosopher, and physician, was born in Spain and had to leave, lived in Morocco and later in Egypt. He was a leader of his people, and he suffered much persecution because he was a Jew. He came up with The Thirteen Principles of Faith. According to Maimonides, a Jew who denied any of these principles would be denied a place in The World to Come. Principle 2 says God has absolute and unparalleled unity. Principle 3 says God is incorporeal – without a body. Principle 2 rules out a God who is One but is comprised of 3 persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Principle 3 rules out the incarnation; there can be no God in the flesh. Therefore, Maimonides principles rule out Jesus as Messiah and God. Maimonides is revered by Jews all over the world today. If Maimonides' principles say there is no Jesus, then for most Jews there is no Jesus, even if the Bible – including the Torah – says otherwise.A great number of rabbis today stand on Rashi and Maimonides as pillars of the Jewish faith and they mislead their people. I'm not saying they're doing it intentionally, but they are doing it, and it's a reason that Jews reject Yeshua.III. Are Jewish People, or Any of Us, Under the Law of Moses Today? It was Maimonides, mentioned just a moment ago, who codified the commandments in the Torah, the 5 Books of Moses, and counted 613 commandments. These are the commandments given by God and therefore found in the Torah. Failure to keep these commandments was punishable by death. No one with a sin nature – meaning all of us – could keep all these commandments. That's why God provided an elaborate system of sacrifices, including blood sacrifices, to provide temporary atonement or forgiveness for sins. God told the Israelites this through Moses:Leviticus 17:11 (NKJV)11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.'The life of an animal became a substitutionary sacrifice for the life of an Israelite. These sacrifices had to be repeated over and over. They provided no permanent forgiveness. This sacrificial system was administered by priests who came from the tribe of Levi.Through the prophet Jeremiah, long after the time of Moses, God told the children of Israel that He was going to replace the Covenant of the Law, also known as the Mosaic Covenant, with a New Covenant:Jeremiah 31:31-34 (NKJV) "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— [32] not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. [33] But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. [34] No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."This word from Jeremiah was a prophecy of a future covenant to replace the covenant that the people continually broke. They couldn't keep that covenant. Nobody could. This New Covenant would require a blood sacrifice that was perfect, unlike the blood from an animal. A new priesthood would be required. There would be one Priest and He would be from the tribe of Judah. In fact, this Priest would also, Himself, be the Sacrifice. This Sacrifice was Jesus, Yeshua, God in the flesh, and His sacrifice on the cross was enough to pay the debt for every sin that would ever be committed, past, present, and future. Yeshua, the Messiah, God Himself in the flesh, and His sacrifice, was and is the basis of the New Covenant. When Yeshua was crucified the curtain in the temple separating the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place was miraculously torn in two from top to bottom, symbolically opening the way for every believer to enter spiritually into the Holy of Holies. Several decades later, in 70 AD, the Temple was destroyed. Never again could a God ordained animal sacrifice ever be made. God requires that His people worship Him through the New Covenant. He loves His people, the Jewish people. God restates the New Covenant in the New Testament in Hebrews exactly as He did in Jeremiah. Now what I'm going to say now is super important and very hard to grasp, especially for a Jewish person. Please listen to me. The Law of Moses shows us God's character and that's a very valuable thing. And the Law is Scripture and all Scripture is profitable. The Law is good. But the Law of Moses cannot provide salvation – it never could. The Law is no longer your master. The New Covenant does provide salvation. The New Covenant has replaced the Covenant of the Law and with a New Covenant there must be a new priesthood. That priesthood consists of only one Priest, Yeshua, Jesus. He is our High Priest now. How does a person access the benefits of that covenant, permanently? You confess Yeshua, Jesus, as your Lord and Savior and you follow Him all the days of your life. He will make you a new creation by filling you with the Holy Spirit, who will help you to keep the New Covenant. If you are a Jew, you will still be JewishIV. What is in the Future for the Israel and for Individual Jews Today?Daniel chapter 9 is a very pivotal chapter. Daniel at this point is an old man, having been taken to Babylon as a teenager. He is a very respected and very godly man. He has been reading the scrolls of Jeremiah the prophet through whom the Lord said that the time of exile would be 70 years. That time of 70 years is only about 2 years away. Daniel must have thought that at 70 years, the Messiah would return and set up the Messianic Kingdom and bad things would all be over, because God sent the angel Gabriel to give Daniel understanding that this would not be the case. Gabriel explained that it would not be seventy years until the time of restoration of all things for the Jewish people but seven times seventy years until this would happen. After 69 sevens of years (483 years), the Messiah would come and would be cut off, killed, but not for Himself. Then the final 7 years would come but only after a gap of time. At the present time we are in that gap which is now about 2,000 years. The final seven years, Daniel's 70th week, is what is known as The Tribulation. It begins when the Coming Prince – the Antichrist – signs a 7 year peace treaty with Israel. At the midpoint, 3.5 years, the Antichrist reveals that he is not a man of peace, he commits the abomination of desolation at the rebuilt temple – the Tribulation Temple or Third Temple – in Jerusalem, as did his predecessor Antiochus in 175 BC in the second temple. That's the Syrian king who was defeated by the Jews led by Judah Maccabee and is celebrated at the festival of Chanukah. That's past. The Antichrist is future. This second half of Daniel's 70th week is referred to by the prophet Jeremiah as The Time of Jacob's Trouble. It will be a Second Holocaust, worse than Hitler's Holocaust. Two thirds of the Jewish people will die, killed by the Antichrist. Jesus spoke about this time:Matthew 24:15-21 (NKJV) "Therefore when you see the 'ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand), [16] "then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. [17] Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. [18] And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. [19] But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! [20] And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. [21] For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.Folks, God is in control of all things. Why would God allow this? Here is why. There are six purposes that God must accomplish for the Jewish Nation for things to be put right and for the end of the age to come. Let me read them to you from Daniel 9:24:Daniel 9:24 (NKJV) "Seventy weeks are determined For your people and for your holy city, To finish the transgression, To make an end of sins, To make reconciliation for iniquity, To bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, And to anoint the Most Holy. What are these 6 purposes?Arnold Fruchtenbaum in his Commentary on Daniel helps us here. Here is a summary of what he says:1. The first purpose of the seventy sevens is to finish a specific transgression of the Jewish people, namely, the rejection of the Messiah.2. The second purpose is to put an end to daily sins.3. The third purpose is to atone for the sin nature of man by accepting the sacrifice of Yeshua on the cross.4. The fourth purpose is to bring in the age of righteousness which is the Messianic or Millennial Kingdom.5. The fifth purpose is the final fulfillment of all revelations and prophecies. With the second coming of the Messiah, the function and purpose of prophecy will be completed.6. The sixth purpose is to anoint the Millennial Temple. These 6 things are going to require the entire Jewish Nation to accept their Messiah, and plead for forgiveness of their sins, the sins of the Nation in rejecting Him 2,000 years ago. God will pour out a spirit of repentance on them and they will be humbled more than ever before. Daniel 12:7 explains this:Daniel 12:7 (NKJV) Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished. The Jewish people will do this at the end of the 7 year Tribulation. They will cry out to Jesus as their Messiah and plead with Him to save them, and He will, right then, as prophesied in Zechariah:Zechariah 12:10 (NKJV) "And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. What about Jewish people NOW, individual Jewish people. What about YOU? You might be in Israel, you might be here in Chapel Hill, or you might be someplace else. I am speaking to both Jewish and Gentile people who don't have a relationship with Yeshua, with Jesus. If you desire forgiveness of sins and you want to have eternal life now, Pastor Vince is going to give an invitation after he speaks. Please accept it, tonight. If you do this you will be placed by God into what is known as the Body of Messiah, the true Church, and you will not enter The Tribulation or The Time of Jacob's Trouble. You will Raptured or resurrected to heaven before that time. There's one more thing I want to say tonight, primarily to those people who lost loved ones on October 7 and to those whose loved ones are still hostages. What about them, you ask. What is God doing about them? Where is God?Do you remember Job in the Bible? God allowed Satan to kill his children, to take away his material possessions, and to take away his health. It was a series of terrible blows. But Job never lost his faith in God. He complained plenty and he criticized God, but he never lost his faith. Then, after a period of time God spoke with Job and Job remembered just how great God is and Job said this:Job 42:6 (NKJV) Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes."And the LORD blessed Job:Job 42:12-13 (NKJV) Now the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; for he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. [13] He also had seven sons and three daughters.Job 42:16-17 (NKJV) After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and grandchildren for four generations. [17] So Job died, old and full of days. Now, somebody may say this: Well, that's just great! God allowed all of Job's children to be killed and He replaced them with other children? Does God think that's righteous?Folks, God is always righteous. We don't always get to see that but we have to believe it. And God loved Job and his children and he loves you. So whatever happens to you or your loved ones, have faith in God and believe that he will make everything right in the end.Thank you for listening.2 Likes22SharePreviousNext2 CommentsViaVeritasVitaDec 8Liked by Arthur P WolinskyDear Dr. Arthur,A few thoughts thrown together here, from a septuagenarian cradle Christian.I heeded your advice and listened last evening to all 3 Calvary sermons. Yours, on the reason for anti-semitism really struck me. As making sense. Flipping through my Bible to follow you as I listened. From April to August I read the Torah in entirety--not just a verse here, a verse there, as always before. And found these books to be a really good read. Then on beginning Joshua, realized I had to read the first 5 again (a good thing too, as I must have slept through many verses). Much is much clearer now--and currently stuck in Leviticus 17, I'd been wondering what was behind all the required sacrifices? Before this last year or so I had not considered 'evil' to be more than an abstraction. Sed tempora mutantur, et nos in illis mutamur. Many thanks to you for what you are doing--and so very very very happy that you have accepted Yeshua.LIKED (1)REPLYSHARE1 reply by Arthur P Wolinsky1 more comment...TopNewCommunityWhy Lasting Peace In Israel Can Never Occur Until Messiah ReturnsA terrible thing happened on October 7. Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life
There are all kinds of reasons Chris Hendricks could have a poor outlook: he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age 4 and his doctor told him he would have a hard time in life; he was in and out of a wheelchair in middle and high school and suffered the particular brand of cruelty practiced by teenagers; at one point, he lost his grandmother, his girlfriend and his band all at the same time. Life has not been easy for Chris. However, Chris chooses to look for magical moments instead of miserable ones. He uses music when he needs inspiration and lives by the philosophy that believing is seeing instead of the opposite. Please listen in to hear some of Chris' story, and his amazing music that are part of his perfectly imperfect journey. Bio Chris Hendricks' music is a blend of pop and RnB with sprinkles of influence from James Taylor to Eminmen. Chris began singing at the age of four for friends and family and hasn't stopped since. He's been a songwriter, poet, lyricist and guitarist for over 15 years. His debut album Noise (2010) sold over 10,000 units. He's performed across the United States, Canada and in Europe. His music has been used by the National Hockey League, the National Football League, and Major League Soccer. He's written music for film (Hunny Bunny in 2020, Carol of the Bells in 2021, OCD in 2021) and television (Radical Dating in 2017). His single “Noise” was the theme song for the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers for the 2012 and 2013 season. His song “Anthem” was used as the signature “goal scoring song” for both NHL teams as well. His most recent releases “Soul on Fire” and “Stars” (2022) have been used as pump up music for the Sandiego Chargers. Chris has toured with, and opened for grammy award winners Amy Grant and Mercy Me as well as the grammy nominated group Delta Rae. Chris has shared the stage with well known artists such as Daughtry, Parachute, Tyler Bryant, Andy McKee, Geri Jewell, Kathy Buckley, Donnie/Andy Demmers, and Jim Parsons. Isaac A. from Chapel Hill, NC shares his experience around changing in recovery and today's Daily Reflection entitled "I Cannot Change the Wind".I CANNOT CHANGE THE WINDis easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe.ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 85My first sponsor told me there were two things to say about prayer and meditation: first, I had to start and second, I had to continue. When I came to A.A. my spiritual life was bankrupt; if I considered God at all, He was to be called upon only when my self-will was incapable of a task or when overwhelming fears had eroded my ego. Today I am grateful for a new life, one in which my prayers are those of thanksgiving. My prayer time is more for listening than for talking. I know today that if I cannot change the wind, I can adjust my sail. I know the difference between superstition and spirituality. I know there is a graceful way of being right, and many ways to be wrong. From the book Daily ReflectionsCopyright © 1990 by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.Healthy Lifestyle Solutions with Maya AcostaAre you ready to upgrade your health to a new level and do so by learning from experts...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showNeed the Daily Reflection Book? It's Hanukkah, and to celebrate this festival of light with a Southern accent, I asked Marcie Cohen Ferris to provide some insight into Jewish foodways in the American South. Her deep attachment to the study of place is rooted in her childhood in Arkansas. For over 40 years, she's studied, documented, interpreted, exhibited, taught, and written about the South, largely through its foodways, material culture, and the southern Jewish experience. As a professor emeritus in the Department of American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Ferris is an editor for Southern Cultures, and her books include: The Edible South: The Power of Food and the Making of an American Region, Matzoh Ball Gumbo: Culinary Tales of the Jewish South, and co-authoring Jewish Roots in Southern Soil: A New History. She has many more accolades to list, but to me, the most important one is personal. I discovered her work while an American Studies instructor myself, and it opened a door to a new path that today includes this very episode.
Isaac A. from Chapel Hill, NC shares his experience around changing in recovery and today's Daily Reflection entitled "I Cannot Change the Wind".I CANNOT CHANGE THE WINDis easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels. From the book Daily ReflectionsCopyright © 1990 by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.Need the Daily Reflection Book?Visit our web siteRead about Recovery on our BlogVisit our Facebook GroupFollow us on TwitterSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon: https://patreon.com/dailyreflection- On PayPal: https://paypal.me/dailyreflectionIf you're struggling with alcohol or addiction, or wondering how to stop drinking it's helpful to know that there's a solution that has worked for millions of people. F. Khristopher Blue of More Than Therapy interviews Aubrea Ageda, a social worker in Durham, Wake, and Franklin County, NC discuss the impact of grief, a focus more recently due to the tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and seven others. The 7 Stages of Grief Shock and Denial When someone first brings you that bad news, it can be difficult to believe. You want to just shake your head and say, "no way." You may start to feel numb. The shock and disbelief are actually suspending your pain, and this may last for several weeks. This doesn't mean the loss didn't impact you. It's simply the first stage in the grief process. Pain and Guilt Once your shock starts to fade, you'll notice the pain. This is when it first starts to hit you that your loss is real. The pain may be extremely difficult to handle, and it may feel physical as well as emotional. You may even start to feel guilty about something you could or should have done for the person (even if it's illogical). Anger and Bargaining Next, many people feel angry. You may feel angry with your religion, with someone who was taking care of that person, with the person responsible, or the person themselves. It may be completely unreasonable who you feel angry with, but you seek out someone you can blame for the loss. You may even attempt to bargain to bring that person back. Depression, Reflection, and Loneliness Depression, reflection, and loneliness usually come later. When many of your family or friends are starting to overcome their suffering or starting to think you should be overcoming your own suffering, you may feel depressed. It can hit even harder than the initial pain, because you're truly coming to terms with the loss. You're not feeling the pain as much as feeling the change to your life. Maybe you've lost someone you spent a lot of time with or the person you always told secrets to. This material loss can cause depression, reflection on the way things were, and loneliness as you realize those times are gone. The Turn Finally, just when you think there can't possibly be anything good coming ever again, you'll start to feel a little better each day. It may be so slight that you don't even realize it at first, and you won't feel happy all at once. What you may feel is a little less pain, a little less sadness, and more of being okay. Reconstruction and Working Through This is where you'll start to work your way through the aftermath of losing that loved one. Maybe you have to take care of some financial troubles either caused by the loss or the grief. Maybe you need to just put yourself back together. This is the stage where it all begins. Acceptance The final stage is the one you'll be in for the rest of your life: you start to accept the loss fully and begin to move on with your life. That's not to say you ever "get over it," but that you start to feel okay. You're able to think and talk about your loss without feeling the despair or intense pain. It may make you sad to think about, but it may also make you happy, because now you can remember the good times. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/morethantherapy/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/morethantherapy/support

Oh the places Kristin Watson’s legs have taken her! On Episode 3 of the Fenom Podcast I am speaking with Kristin, she is the owner of Purvelo - a rhythm based indoor cycle studio with 4 locations in Charlottesville VA, Auburn AL, Chapel Hill NC, and Athens GA. Growing up she was the youngest on the block and her scrappy personality had her keeping up and playing all the sports with her older brother and the neighborhood boys. Soccer was her life until 7th grade when she joined track and field which changed the course of her life. She received a full scholarship to WVU where she looked for a college that was both artistically advanced as well as a top tier in athletics. She pursued her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics and a minor in Art History and even studied abroad in China to complete her degree. I cannot wait to discuss this more. Kristin met her husband Peter Watson in college, she moved home and became a teacher and coach at her alma mater. Kristin and Pete’s relationship have taken them to 8 different states/countries and sometimes even living apart due to their different career paths but they made it work to support one another’s personal goals and endeavors. Kristin opened Purvelo Charlottesville in 2015 with 3 other locations that soon followed. She looks to double that by 2022. She is also putting her artistic talents to use by creating her own line of clothing from concept to production to go along with her branded pieces of merchandise from preexisting brands. By the summer of 2020 she will have a Purvelo e-commerce store where you can get all of your branded Purvelo gear. As I know firsthand, studio ownership is not easy. Simple decisions can make or break you. How you manage your time on the minute details and create a vision for the big picture? How you build a community and hold the standard? We are talking all about that and more!

When it comes to the younger generations depending on your age and what you do, you have an opinion. Most of the time those opinions are not very favorable toward our young people. Somehow so many of us can act like the previous generations were so much better, that their work ethic was so superior, that they were more loyal, and not as entitled. What is interesting every generation has pretty much said the same thing about the new generations coming up. We have a tendency to over-estimate ourselves, and dramatically under-estimate those who are coming after us. Mark Perna Generations Expert and Author of the book Answering Why: Unleashing Passion, Purpose, and Performance in Younger Generations joins us on this episode of A New Direction. Mark helps all of us understand who the younger generation is, why they do what they do, what they want, and how to educate, parent, and employ this younger generation with great success. It all starts with removing the labels, and understanding that parents have done so much to protect their children that the children are looking for experiences more so than for money. They want to be part of something that makes an impact on this world. And when you start to think about just those to things, deep down isn't that what we all want to do? Answering Why: Unleashing Passion, Purpose, and Performance in Younger Generations is a tremendously insightful book. Not only does it provide fabulous insights into our younger generations, but it serves as a guide to help us better educate them, employ them, and how we can be instrumental into the productivity in their lives. Mark Perna also shed light into how our educational system is perhaps sending the wrong message. Maybe not everyone needs to go to college, in fact what Mark demonstrates in his book that there are a variety of ways that young people can make a great living by not going to college. He even gives us a brief view of his creation The Career Tree. and it just makes sense. It is time for us to redefine what we are feeding this younger generation...because we the older ones are sending the wrong message and it is time for us to change it. And it starts with our attitude and our effort. We can change the world if we reach to help, support, encourage, and understand. Because the saying is true, "seek first to understand, before you want to be understood". Enjoy the show! Thank you to our sponsors: Enlign Business Brokers and Advisors. President Anna Richards of the NAACP in Chapel Hill/Carrboro, North Carolina presented a history of the NAACP from its formation in the early 1900's through present day. She especially upheld the many women responsible for making the NAACP happen both at its inception and throughout the decades that followed. Anna discussed in depth the important role the NAACP has had in shaping of American history since its inception. Anna discussed the role the NAACP had in supporting the Chapel Hill 9 (just commemorated in Chapel Hill yesterday) and presented the ongoing work that is planned to honor the nine young students who protested at the lunch counter on February 28, 1960. She called for inclusion of any females who had also participated in the years of work that took place from 1960-1962 in the Civil Rights Movement in Chapel Hill to obtain fair and equal treatment. During my interview with Anna, we discussed how women have been treated throughout the decades and the structural systemic disparities that have existed for women of color along side their white female counterparts including the gender norms we have been less aware of and and those norms we are bringing into awareness as we talk about women's issues. Anna discussed her experience as a woman in business and an African American woman leading the NAACP now in her retirement. She presented the categories of support that the NAACP addresses locally and nationally as well as upcoming events planned. She revealed that the NAACP was just placed on the New York Stock Exchange for corporate sponsorship. Anna concluded by highlighting their website and the fact that the Chapel Hill NAACP is made of a membership which includes about 50% White & 50% Black members/supporters.
“Softly, tenderly, using delicate voices,” those are the final words on the new album “Tides of a Teardrop” and it’s an apt description of the Chapel Hill NC band’s approach to these songs that deal with loss, grief and ultimately comfort.

Welcome to another episode of Talking Gut, and you have just been listening to the Fabulous Chalets, with the bass player being the one and only Dr Douglas Drossman, gastroenterologist and functional gut extraordinaire. I am so super excited to have Dr Drossman as a guest here today. I have been wanting to interview him for over 1 year and here it is.` A little background about Dr Drossman and I mean alittle, There is simply not enough time to go through his jaw dropping 124 page 10 font size single spacing CV. I simply cannot do his Bio justice here in the limited time we have, but Ill give it a go. Okay, so Dr. Drossman was one of the first gastroenterologists to develop the field of brain-gut interactions and Neurogastroenterology in terms of research, patient care and education. He is Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Psychiatry in Gastroenterology at the University Of North Carolina School of Medicine where he was on staff from 1977 through 2011. He founded and co-directed of the UNC Center for Functional Gastrointestinal and Motility Disorders (1993-2011) in Chapel Hill North Carolina. Dr. Drossman has published over 350 peer review articles and over 140 book chapters, has edited or written 20 books and acquired over $15 million in grants. He was Associate Editor of Gastroenterology (2001-2006), has served on six other editorial and advisory boards in Gastroenterology, psychosomatic medicine, behavioral medicine, and patient health and was the Gastroenterology Section Editor of the Merck Manual for 17 years. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the International Foundation for Functional GI Disorders (IFFGD) (www.iffgd.org). In 2012, Dr. Drossman founded the Drossman Center for the Education and Practice of Biopsychosocial Care (DrossmanCare -www.drossmancenter.com) to help train physicians in relationship centered biopsychosocial care with emphasis on communication skills and enhancing the patient doctor relationship. An area unique to Dr. Drossman is his excellence in teaching not only on the functional GI disorders, but also in communication skills and patient centered care. He has been a visiting professor at 143 academic programs and has given over 700 lectures. He has written numerous articles and produced educational videotapes on the biobehavioral aspects of medical care, medical interviewing and the patient-doctor relationship and he received second prize at the 1997 AMA International Film Festival. A major contribution relates to Dr. Drossman being the organizing founder and President of the Rome Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the lives of individuals with FGIDs. With regard to treatment, he was principal investigator in a 5-year multi-center study that first demonstrated in 2003 the value of a cognitive behavioral therapy and also of a tricyclic antidepressants for treatment of functional bowel disorders. Dr. Drossman has received multiple research awards, including the American Psychosomatic Society President’s Award (2003), the AGA Mentors Research Scholar Award (2007), the American Journal of Gastroenterology Lectureship award (2011) to name afew. And on top of these amazing achievements, he is person who is truly passionate about helping his patients and his colleagues. Sooo what did we talk about, we talk about pretty much everything. His early beginnings, his band the fabulous chalets to his early days as a gastroenterologist and people that influenced him to take the path in functional gut disorders. We talked about the Rome foundation and ROME criteria, and his past and current work in helping to improve the doctor patients relationship, to the befit of the patients and the gastroenterologist. There is a lot to learn here, for the both patient and for the Doctor will benefit from this talk. I hope you get as much out of it as I did. Please enjoy.
This week, we air two segments. South Carolina Prisoner, "J" First, "J" is in segregation in a South Carolina prison. He does not give his full name or the prison he's inside for reasons of personal safety. You'll hear him share a bit about his experience of the prison strike from the inside, the repression of prisoners at his facilities, prisoner unity in the strike, the high costs of living in prison and poor quality of food and other goods available and the red herring of administration that cell phones are the cause of violence. He shares condolences for families of those who were killed at Lee Correctional, the guard-instigated violence in April that sparked the call for the Nationwide Prison Strike. J also shares his thanks of outside supporters who have demonstrated outside of his facility, IWOC in particular and those who've helped to carry prisoners words around the world. To hear updates on the strike, again, we suggest y'all check out prisonstrike.com and the sites it links, as well as recent episodes of the IGDpodcast, The Hot Wire, Kiteline & Rustbelt Abolition Radio, all members of the Channel Zero Network. Resisting Nuclear Trash in Bure, France After that, for the bulk of the episode shares words from Daniel, who is involved in resistance to the building of a nuclear waste storage facility in the Gran Est (formerly Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine or ACAL) region near the French border with Germany. This infrastructure mega project threatens to poison the ground-water that feeds Paris, poison the ground in Gran Est and for villages like Bure where Daniel is based, and the resistance to the CIGEO storage facility has been met by harsh government repression and a heavy response police response. Daniel talks about the energy infrastructure in France, the military and colonial connection with the fuel of Uranium, comparisons to the ZAD at Notre Dame de Landes in Western France, resistance to other damaging power sources like in the Hambach Forest against a huge lignite mine in Germany and a few words about anti-pipeline struggles in the U.S. We experienced some technical difficulties during the Bure interview, so for about 15 minutes there is a buzz. We hope that you will power through and listen carefully through the audio because the information is very interesting. After that time, it clears up and Daniel is far more listenable. Here are a few references Daniel makes, such as the Tarnac Case, the ZAD (our interviews on the ZAD) , Hambach Forest (including interviews by crimethInc and us). The deforestation may happen this autumn, so actions in Bure (which is bristling with police who detain and inspect people). You can find out info in French at https://vmc.camp (most updated) that can be put through a translator or a less-updated English-language version at https://en.vmc.camp or one in German at https://de.vmc.camp that's slightly more updated. And Unicorn Riot did a piece last year contextualizing the ZAD NDDL, Hambach Forest resistance and struggle in Bure. If you'd like to hear an update and call-out about resistance in the Hambach forest by audio comrades from Infolara in Switzerland, check out the link in our shownotes. This audio will be a part of the next edition of B(A)DNews: Angry Voices From Around The World, produced by the International A-Radio Network of Anarchist and Anti-Authoritarian radio and podcast projects, of which we and Infolara are members. B(A)DNews is a monthly, English-language podcast (sometimes with a Spanish-language edition) released in the middle of each month. Stay tuned for that and you can find past episodes at A-Radio-Network.Org Announcements Resisting Neo-Confederates and Nazis in Eastern TN From an IGD post entitled “No Fascists in Appalachia: Call to Oppose League of the South in Tennessee“: "The League of the South (LOS) and other far-Right/neo-Nazi groups are organizing two events in Northeast Tennessee this month. One will target the TriPride march in Johnson City and the other is a gathering in Elizabethton, Tennessee to protest the fall of Silent Sam in Chapel Hill NC." "The LOS is a neo-Confederate hate group known for its flash-rallies brandishing the Confederate battle flag in small towns across the South, and for its extreme violence like in Charlottesville on August 12, 2017 last summer. Their Chief of Staff is Michael Tubbs, a former green beret who went to prison for stealing and stockpiling weapons from the US Military for the KKK, and who was integral to the violence in Charlottesville." TriPride will be held in Johnson City, TN and will march through downtown, starting at 101 Commerce Street. Tennessee LOS coordinator Tom Pierce has called for a protest to happen along the march route. Pierce helped organize a similar protest against a Pride march last June in Knoxville." "We're calling for folx to organize autonomously for this event. The fascists could show up on any part of the march route so be prepared to visibly or physically block them from interfering with the pride march.” Check out the IGD article to see the full, article. Defend Rashid From Transfer The prominent voice featured in last week's episode of The Final Straw, the political prisoner Kevin Rashid Johnson, is being threatened with another punitive transfer because of his organizing and speaking out. There is a hearing on Monday, September 10th in his prison in Virginia, the state in which he was captured before being transferred away. His past transfers have moved him further from his family, have resulted in beatings, medical neglect, threats, starvation other attacks by prison officials and other prisoners. It would be awesome if you, dear listener, could take a moment to call and email tomorrow starting at 9am eastern time to the official in charge of interstate compact: Chief of Corrections Operations David Robinson. We can call the main office number at 804-674-3000 and ask to be transferred to his phone line. Robinson's email address is david.robinson@vadoc.virginia.gov. When leaving a message or talking to Mr Robinson, refer to Rashid by his legal name Kevin Johnson, and give his Virginia prison id # 1007485. Explain that he is better off in Virginia, that he has been subjected to serious human rights abuses during previous transfers. Over ten thousand people have already signed a petition demanding that he be released from solitary and that he not be transferred. Update on Harm Reduction and Food Distribution in Asheville The City of #Asheville just dropped their notice of violation against the 12 Baskets food distribution project out of the Kairos West community center, however is still retaining it's attack on Steady Collective's needle exchange, noloxin distribution and harm reduction program by an unprecedented challenge to Firestorm's hosting of the project via claiming that Firestorm is operating a homeless shelter by hosting Steady Collective. This is idiotic. Distributing harm reduction tools to the public saves lives and providing a space for people to sit, read, access reading materials and the internet does not amount to a shelter. If you haven't heard the issues, check out our August 12th interview with Hill Brown of Steady Collective and keep an eye on their social media presence as well as that of Firestorm. Also, consider a visit to their public event every Tuesday at Firestorm from 1:30 to 4pm. BRABC event On Thursday, September 20th at Firestorm Books & Coffee in West Asheville, NC, Blue Ridge Anarchist Black Cross will be packaging mail for prisoners. No experience needed, just show up ready to fold and address and stamp materials. Snacks and good company will be provided! . ... . .. Playlist is pending
Courtney Hopper and Dana Kadwell are sisters and serial entrepreneurs in the Raleigh wedding industry. In this show, you'll get a sense of what that means to really be an entrepreneur. Courtney and Dana were willing to sell everything and go for it, knowing that their visions for their businesses would work. Courtney and Dana own both C and D Events Wedding Planning and The Bradford Wedding Venue in New Hill NC, just outside of Raleigh. Their partnership, loyalty, and love for each other is something special too - building a business isn’t easy, and working weddings isn’t always glamorous – and there’s tension – and they fight – but in the end, they’re always there for each other, and that really comes through. You’ll hear them talk about their families a lot on this show. Courtney is married to Mikhail, and they have 3 kids, Mason, Nora, and Liam. Dana is married to Sam, and they have two kids, Henry and Ada. And it sounds like their families are together all the time. It’s just a special relationship as you’ll probably tell. On the show, Courtney and Dana talk about how they got into wedding planning, saving up enough money to start the venue, the difficult times when money was tight and tensions were high, how they work together, one of the craziest stories you'll hear, and advice they would give for someone starting out. At Crook’s Corner on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, NC, the morning soundtrack is a little radio above prep tables and the chatting of cooks as they fill the restaurant. There are deliveries, phones occasionally ringing, and morning greetings, including one in Spanish you’ll hear in this episode. Bill Smith -- the James Beard nominated chef of a James Beard America’s Classic Restaurant, author, music aficionado, and someone who sees something he doesn’t agree with and does something about it -- yeah, that Bill Smith whose 300 rock n’ roll T-shirts are in the Southern Folklife collection at the University of North Carolina, he made me a pot of coffee and invited me to sit in the dining room for a chat amid the morning work. We’d celebrated him the night before at Terra Vita Food & Drink Festival’s Tribute Dinner (which sold out by the way), and so we’d supped on pickled shrimp, collard soup, tomato gravy, and so much more, dishes made by chefs from across the region who cooked to pay tribute to him. Meet Bill, and you’ll soon understand people like him for much more than his iconic pimento cheese, honeysuckle sorbet, or those soft shell crabs. He’s a humble and down-to-earth bad ass whose heart is so kind. At one point during this chat, I had to stop the interview to compose myself after he said his kitchen wasn’t fun anymore. I would hate this for any chef, but knowing how Bill loves his work, it made me cry.
Ian Boden was focused had the kind of focus that has garnered him two, two, James Beard nominations, all from a little spot called The Shack in Staunton, Virginia. That’s a 26-seat place in a town in the middle of the Shenandoah Valley, so you know it must be good. Especially since you can’t see a menu online, especially since you probably have no idea where Staunton is, and especially since you’re more than likely not sure how rye berries are even supposed to taste or that lettuce could even be a soup. Relax, Ian knows what he’s doing. Although he wasn’t born to it, he’s channeling Appalachian heritage through the plate, filtered through fine dining experience and his Jewish heritage. If that still doesn’t make sense, once again, just imagine relaxing and having a good meal that surprises and satisfies. Ian has been cooking since he was 13, and although he has many opinions on the theory of cooking and how to approach it, he never forgets his focus to bring people together over a meal. We’re all welcome at his table.

The line is probably long, there’s probably a plastic tray and some styrofoam cups, but when you open the door on a true soul food restaurant, all those details melt away with the scent of fried chicken, barbecue, or macaroni and cheese. There’s no curated soundtrack here, no beverage director, but an extra slice of cake is exactly what the doctor ordered. This is the spot, actually the spots, all across the country where author and scholar Adrian Miller tasted and tested his theories about the ultimate soul food meal. He came to his love of the cuisine honestly (it was the food he grew up eating), and at one point he even considered opening a soul food restaurant. However, this former lawyer who worked in the Clinton White House found his path when he penned Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, One Plate at a Time. Now he’s @soulfoodscholar on Twitter, a barbecue judge, and has just released his second book, The President’s Kitchen Cabinet, which is about the African Americans who fed our first families. We sat down for a recent chat at Terra Vita in Chapel Hill, NC, or as he says, we sat down “to break cornbread together.” It’s another cornbread reference on another episode, but get ready to see everything from okra to Kool-Aid with new eyes.

Today we’re doing a preview of the Bring King of Spring Face Off Classic held in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill North Carolina and starts Thursday, March 9. For me, and even though the season is already well underway in Florida and some other states, the Brine King of Spring Face-off Classic has always been the unofficial signal that lacrosse season is here. There are 34 teams from 10 different states and Canada at this year’s event, which marks it’s 8th time. I’ve personally been to this even a number of years and it’s always a lot of fun. Jon Lantzy, who is the head coach at Durham Academy, and started the event sits down with me to talk a little about it’s history, the fundraising portion of the event, how it’s grown and how he does the matchups. For more information on the event, you can check out www.kingofspringlax.com or LaxRecords.com/podcast.

In honor of Halloween we’ve got a scary local government story. What would your town do if about 80,000 people descended upon it for a night? That isn’t a bad dream, it happened to the Town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 2007 and even in the years since, with efforts to reduce crowd size, about 40,000 costumed revelers come to the town annually. GovLove talks with Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue and interim Fire Chief Matt Sullivan about all the work that goes on behind the scenes to put this event on.
Aidan Buehler is 14 years old. He's an eighth grader in Chapel Hill NC with an interest in drafting. What he did next is remarkable. Instead of just piddling around on his computer like most kids, he contacted Chapel hill architect Lucy Carol Davis to be his mentor on a school-wide design competition. Aidan's house was one of the most elaborate projects. According to his interview with the News and Observer, "Basically, I designed a house from start to finish,” he said, although it ended up being larger than planned. He laid out rooms and external design features, furnished the house, and added paint and textures. He did not include a plumbing system, electrical system, or internal wiring. “I did put in some vents and designed it so that, with some editing, it could be built legally I should hope,” he said.
