TSMC's suppliers got a boost from rotational buying, and Largan Precision Co., a supplier of smartphone camera lenses to Apple Inc., reported a large foreign exchange loss for the second quarter, citing a stronger Taiwan dollar. 3 soldiers injured during drills Three soldiers were injured in an accident over the weekend while participating in the Han Kuang drills. The injuries were not life-threatening. The incident occurred when a light reconnaissance tactical vehicle assigned to the 8th Army Corps struck a roadside curb in Kaohsiung. Officials say, the three injured servicemen in the vehicle were taken to a hospital for treatment, where doctors found that they sustained (持續) bone fractures and contusions. Authorities plan to strengthen training on military vehicle driving safety. That's the third military vehicle-related accident since the live-fire phase of the annual Han Kuang exercises began on Wednesday, but no injuries were reported in the other two incidents. (AH-CNA) F4 reunites during concert at Taipei Arena Taiwanese boy band F4 reunited on stage over the weekend during the finale of pop-rock band Mayday's concert at Taipei Arena. The performance was the first time since 2016 that the members of F4 shared a public appearance together. Their reunion as guests at Mayday's final of eight Taipei Arena concerts was revealed last month, and Mayday members say the appearance (公開露面,) took two years of planning. F4 officiallly disbanded in 2009 and its members spread into different areas of the Asian entertainment industry. Speaking Sunday, he cited unprecedented threats from Russia, terrorism and online attacks. Macron aims to double annual defense spending to $74.8 billion by 2027, compared to $37 billion in 2017. He has stressed the need for a powerful military to protect freedom and Europe amid growing dangers, including Russia's war in Ukraine and global disinformation (假資訊) campaigns. Macron also calls for a strategic dialogue with European partners on France's nuclear arsenal. His plan faces criticism from left-wing parties over potential cuts to social programs. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Indian legislator offers money to assassinate evangelists and pastors A member of a district legislative council in India has announced a bounty on Christian evangelists.   In a public speech, BJP Legislative Assembly Member Gopichand Padalkar allegedly issued a rate card for the assassination of various Christians, the highest amount offered for the killing of pastors. Members of the Christian community in the area are asking that police open a case against the legislator for inciting violence and spreading hatred. Under such treacherous conditions, would you pray for the safety of Christians in India? Iranian Christians losing hope about regime change World News Group reports that Christians in Iran are losing hope now for any possible regime change. During the week following the U.S. strikes, 1,000 people were arrested and falsely accused of spying for Israel, many of whom were Christians.  Some were executed.  The report quotes a 40-year-old Christian woman. She said, “Nobody welcomes wars, but at this point, war seems to be the most viable solution [for a regime change]. The oppressed people of Iran have used every opportunity to free themselves of this terrorist group in control. Every peaceful protest is cracked down upon in the most brutal way. We hoped these conflicts would give us a chance to fight for freedom by having military forces eradicated by Israel, just like the Israeli prime minister promised us.” An opinion survey conducted in 2022 by a Netherlands institute, found that, on a sample size of 158,000 people, over 80% of Iranians rejected the Islamic Republic and would prefer a democratically-elected government. Texas Governor called for a Day of Prayer for flood victims The latest count of the deceased in the Texas flooding tragedy has now reached 100, 27 of whom include children and counselors from a Christian girls camp known as Camp Mystic, reports ABC News. Davin Williams, the camp nurse, was heartbroken. WILLIAMS: “We had no idea people were missing. We had no idea that they had to wade through water, barely able to stand to get to the pavilion. I didn't even realize the gravity of the situation until we saw helicopters flying over us.” Over the weekend, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott called for a day of prayer. The royals drew attention to the sinful celebrations by adding in the caption: "#Pride2025," alongside emojis of a rainbow, disco ball, and sparkles. In reaction, one person wrote, “What a terrible post. No wonder at the coronation the King chose not to say 'defender of the Faith.' The monarchy ended with our beloved late Queen Elizabeth II.” And another asked, “Isn't the King the head of the church of England? He shouldn't be promoting sins.” 35,000 Brits participated in the march, supported also by the King's Royal Guard, reports Parade.  Spanish bill would imprison pastors who help “gays” or transgenders Spain is considering a bill that would imprison pastors who employ any “methods, programs, techniques or procedures of aversion or conversion, whether psychological, physical, pharmacological or of any other nature, intended to modify, repress, eliminate or deny their sexual orientation, sexual identity or gender expression,” reports The Christian Post. The lower house approved the bill by an overwhelming vote of 311 to 33.   Interestingly, Spain's Gross Domestic Product has been in a slump for 16 years. 25% tariff on Japan and South Korea; 30% on South Africa Yesterday, President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff to be imposed on Japan and South Korea, and a 30% tariff on South African imports, effective August 1st, reports NBC News. The tariffs will be subject to negotiation, as the announcement suggested “perhaps” a reconsideration, “depending on our relationship with your Country,” in Trump's words. South Africa has seen no measurable growth in its GDP this year. The nation's economy is stagnating. Also, both the South Korean and Japanese economies contracted slightly in the first quarter of this year. India now fourth largest economy worldwide India is replacing Japan this year as the fourth largest economy in the world, according to initial estimates. Japan was the second largest economy in the world between 1988 and 2010, but its Gross Domestic Product has not improved since 1995 -- 30 years ago. The International Monetary Fund projects that the BRICS eastern nations of China and India will take the #2 and #3 positions as the strongest economies in the world by 2030. Thanks to Javier Milei, Argentina's economy is rebounding Argentina's economy is doing better. Since President Javier Milei's election in 2023, the country's annual inflation rate has reduced from 211.4 percent in 2023 to 43.5 percent by mid-2025. Remarkably, Milei cut 27% of the state budget and laid off thousands of government employees in his first year in office (last year), after which the economy took a small hit.   But recovery appears to be on its way for Argentina. The nation's GDP got a 5.8% boost in the first quarter of 2025. Congressional Budget Office predicts $1.9 trillion deficit this year The U.S. President's budget proposed for 2026, includes the identical base discretionary spending projection as Biden's previous budget - $1.6 trillion. The proposed budget includes an increase in spending of $155 billion for Homeland Security and Defense, and significant decreases in Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, and international welfare programs. The Congressional Budget Office is projecting a $1.9 trillion deficit this year, the third-highest deficit in American history. Keep in mind the biblical principle from Deuteronomy 15:5-6. Welcome back.  Mother is in London and it just so happens that she is there right at the time when the ceremony for the Coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra is about to take place. Their coronation took place on August 9th, 1902, so you can see that she was there just days before. Naturally, the city of London is full of people.  King Edward and Queen Alexandra are the parents of King George VI who came after them. And, as we all know, King George VI was the father of Queen Elizabeth II who died three years ago at the time of this recording. She died in 2022. It's crazy to think that much time has already passed.  Anyway, we have a short reading today and let's begin by turning to page 273.

The United Kingdom's procurement of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, encompassing both the F-35B and F-35A variants, reflects a complex interplay of strategic, operational, political, and industrial considerations spanning decades. The 1998 decision to select the F-35B, driven by industrial pressures and inter-service rivalries, laid the foundation for the UK's Carrier Enabled Power Projection (CEPP) capability via the Royal Navy's Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers. The recent announcement to procure 12 F-35A jets, as part of the planned 138 F-35s, introduces a tactical nuclear role for the Royal Air Force (RAF) within NATO's nuclear-sharing framework. This paper examines the 1998 F-35B selection, the rationale for excluding the F-35A and F-35C, the motivations for the 2025 F-35A acquisition, and the multifaceted challenges, including impacts on the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), infrastructure, training, sovereignty, and CEPP. It argues that while the F-35A's assignment to 207 Squadron (OCU) and short-term cost savings address immediate needs, the legacy of 1998 decisions, combined with current policy shifts, risks undermining GCAP, increasing long-term costs, and enables Lockheed Martin to exploit tensions with GCAP partners Italy and Japan, jeopardising the our strategic autonomy and future air combat capabilities. The 1998 Decision to Select the F-35B and Inter-Service Pressures The UK's commitment to the F-35B originated in the late 1990s, formalised in the 1998 Strategic Defence Review (SDR), which prioritised restoring a credible carrier strike capability lost with the retirement of the Invincible-class carriers and Sea Harrier FA2 by 2006. As a Tier 1 partner in the US-led Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme, the UK evaluated three F-35 variants: the F-35A (conventional take-off and landing), F-35B (Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing, STOVL), and F-35C (carrier-based, catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery, CATOBAR). The Royal Navy initially favoured the F-35C, which offered greater range (1,200 nautical miles versus 900 for the F-35B), higher payload, and compatibility with CATOBAR systems, aligning with ambitions for a more capable Queen Elizabeth-class carrier design. However, political and industrial pressures tipped the scales toward the F-35B. Rolls-Royce exerted significant influence, advocating for the F-35B due to its role in developing the LiftSystem for STOVL operations, securing substantial workshare and economic benefits for British industry. Other UK firms, including BAE Systems, supported the F-35B, as it ensured integration with the Queen Elizabeth-class carriers' STOVL configuration, avoiding costly CATOBAR retrofits estimated at £2 billion per carrier. The Labour government, under Tony Blair, prioritised industrial jobs and domestic manufacturing, aligning with the SDR's emphasis on economic dividends from defence spending. The F-35B's selection promised thousands of jobs in Rolls-Royce's Bristol facilities and BAE's supply chain, outweighing the Royal Navy's operational arguments for the F-35C. Inter-service rivalries further shaped the decision. The RAF, keen to consolidate its dominance in fixed-wing aviation, supported the F-35B's joint RAF-RN operation, arguing it could serve both carrier and land-based roles, simplifying logistics and training. This contrasted with the F-35C, which would have entrenched the Royal Navy-centric carrier operations. To fund the F-35B programme and the carriers' development, the MoD faced intense inter-service pressures, leading to the controversial early retirement of the Harrier fleet. The RAF lobbied to retire the Royal Navy's FA2 (Sea Harrier) by 2006, citing its limited air-to-air capabilities compared to the F-35B's multi-role potential. The U.S. Constitution had to be formed through debate before it could be ratified. Mirroring this, a British constitution must emerge through debates held by the next generation. This lecture indicates schools are a good environment to foster this. For students, there are many contentious issues that tap into discussions at the heart of writing a constitution. Students being punished for swearing raises questions of limits to free speech. Students wishing to intervene when an unpopular peer is bullied would be empowered by constitutional duty obliging them to do so. Schools tend to be authoritarian institutions, benevolent or otherwise, and can either provoke students to develop ideas on power structures and recognise the need for their own rights and duties, or condition them to accept of the status quo.This lecture was recorded by Clive Stafford Smith on 22nd May 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Clive is the Gresham Professor of LawHe is the founder and director of  the Justice League a non-profit human rights training centre focused on fostering the next generation of advocates.  He also teaches part time at Bristol Law School and Goldsmiths as well as running a summer programme for 35 students in Dorset, his home. On May 28th, 1588, a fleet of a hundred and fifty-one Spanish ships set out from Lisbon, bound for England. Its mission was to transport a huge invasion force across the Channel. The Spanish King, Philip II, was determined to remove Queen Elizabeth from the throne and return the English to the Catholic fold. Or send me an email or message.Right, gold … today we ask: Should you invest in gold collectibles?The gold at the Museo del Oro in Bogotá, Colombia, is one of the most stunning collections you will ever see – diadems, helmets and crowns, rings, necklaces and bracelets, beads and breastplates, even fishhooks and penis covers. The smiths of ancient South and Central America were quite brilliant artisans. The Spaniards who saw their work said Aztec goldsmiths were more skilled than their European counterparts.In Mexico, the conquistadors found life-size figures of men and women, great jars and pitchers, half pottery-half gold vases sculpted in relief with birds, animals and insects, and more. In Peru and Ecuador, the conquistadors found miniature gardens made of gold – earth of gold granules, gold cornstalks, and gold figures of men and llamas.Unfortunately, what sits in the Museo del Oro is just a fraction of what was made. The Spaniards valued bullion on weight alone, ascribing no value to art, beauty or workmanship. Most got melted down before being sent home. What they sent to their king intact got melted down once back in Europe. “What was being destroyed was more perfect than anything they enjoyed and possessed,” said a young priest travelling with the conquistador Francisco Pizarro.The conquistadors were by no means alone in this. It has happened repeatedly through history. Though gold may last, art made from gold rarely does. People always seem to melt it down. That should mean ancient gold workings should command an even higher premium for their antiquity, because they have survived the meltdown risk. But for some reason, it doesn't seem to work like that.You can't destroy gold, as I'm sure you know. It lasts forever and never loses its shine. It was present in the dust that formed the solar system, and sits in the Earth's crust today, just as it did when our planet was formed some 4.6 billion years ago.That means that little bit of gold you may be wearing on your finger or around your neck is actually older than the Earth itself. In fact, it is older than the solar system. Who knows? It might once have adorned a pharaoh or sat in a conquistador's treasure chest. Gold may be antique, but it's very rare that you get vast premiums for its antique value.Buying gold or silver? The dealer I use and recommend is the Pure Gold Company. Find out more here.The gold coinage that never wasIf you buy a gold sovereign minted recently, you would typically pay £600 to £630. For a Victorian sovereign minted 150 years ago or more – which has the same gold content – you would pay £660 to £680. So, for all that history and antique value, you pay just 10%. Sovereigns are not uncommon. A billion are thought to have been struck. So you get little rarity value. But even so, you'd think you would get more of a premium.The main exception is the 1937 sovereign struck for Edward VIII. Since he abdicated a few weeks before the coins were struck, they were never circulated. They are often called the “coinage that never was”, and only a few were ever minted. One sold in 2020 for £1 million. That's quite the premium. But this is rare.About ten years ago, I picked up a Justinian solidus, minted in 600AD – the solidus was the dominant coin of the Mediterranean after the Roman aureus. I got it for a 20% premium to the spot value of the metal. And I bought it from a shop in W1, so I was paying the Mayfair premium too.An ingot recovered from the SS Central America, which famously sank off the Carolina coast in 1857 carrying Californian gold to New York (and triggered a financial panic because so much bullion was lost), recently went up for auction. It weighed 649 ounces, but it was only 21-carat gold (.875 purity). If melted down, you would have 568 ounces of pure gold, which, at today's price of $3,300 per ounce, would have a spot value of $1.9 million. It sold for $2.1 million, including the buyer's premium – little more than the spot value, in other words.Antique gold very rarely catches the huge premium you might think it deserves. Beware graded coinsUnscrupulous coin dealers will often try to flog you graded coins. If a dealer tells you that some recent sovereign, for example, is extremely rare, that it was one of the last coins minted under Queen Elizabeth II, or some such, and that it has been graded and has a special certificate and blah blah... and it therefore carries a huge premium, they are trying to pull a sly one.The reality is that the extra premium paid is almost impossible to claw back when you come to sell. In almost all cases, they are trying to rip you off. Don't pay a premium for graded coins.A dealer might buy a large stock of coins from the Royal Mint. Coins are often of a slightly different quality. Dealers then send them off and pay a small fee to get them graded according to their “Mint State”. The scale ranges from MS-60 to MS-70, with MS-70 being a perfect, flawless coin. They then charge a large premium for coins with high grades, even though they barely paid any premium when they bought the coins.The margins when dealing in gold are on the slim side – sometimes just a few percent. But if they get an additional premium for the rarity, that margin can rise to 100%. No wonder there are so many unscrupulous salesman trying to flog graded coins.Fractional coins – quarter or half sovereigns, for example – or older coins do trade at a higher (though not enormous) premium. These can trade for 15 - 20% above the spot value of the gold content. But you are likely to get that back when you sell.You are not buying gold to try and be clever and hope that your coin gets some kind of rarity value. In most cases, that will not happen. There are clever people who know this market better than you already playing this game. Don't get involved is my advice. Your priority is to get as much gold for your money as possible.
