Listen now on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.—Dave Hora is perpetual Employee of the Month at Dave's Research Company: as a consultant, he helps leaders run strategic product initiatives and teams build well-informed product processes. In 2011, Dave was the first researcher at a mobile startup in San Francisco, then went on to work as the first research hire at five more companies including ResearchGate, PlanGrid, and Instacart. In 2020, he went independent and founded Dave's Research Company in Porto, Portugal.Dave co-led and co-designed the Research Skills Framework during his time as a Research Ops Community board member. He runs a small mailing list about how we make good software, and each year he takes a short sabbatical for winemaking or sake brewing season. In our conversation, we discuss:* Why researchers must understand the broader workflows and strategic goals their work feeds into.* How to “journey map” your research projects to identify patterns in decisions and outcomes.* The tension between pet projects and strategic alignment—especially in ambiguous organizations.* The importance of gaining visibility into upstream and downstream processes beyond the research itself.* How researchers can navigate vague strategies like “10x growth” without losing their grounding. Some takeaways:* Research is only valuable in context. Dave reminds us that insights have little power unless they directly support the work a team is trying to do. Strategic research isn't about delivering answers in isolation, it's about enabling action and influencing the sequence of product decisions.* Journey map your projects, not just your users. To grow as a researcher, reflect on your past projects and map the decisions, artifacts, and impacts they produced. Over time, you'll start to see recurring patterns, what kinds of questions emerge at different phases, and how research is (or isn't) used.* Visibility is your first step to influence. If you're stuck in a validation loop, start by asking what happens next. Join meetings outside your immediate research bubble. Observe how decisions are made, how documents evolve, and where your insights go. Influence begins with curiosity and presence.* Without strategy, pet projects thrive. When companies lack a clear “what we are and aren't doing,” well-intentioned ideas, often from leadership, can steamroll roadmaps. Researchers won't always win these battles, but they can help clarify risks, expose assumptions, and steer ideas through a more thoughtful path to validation.* Your role isn't to fix the org, but to participate wisely. You don't need to solve your company's strategic alignment or broken processes. But you can bring awareness to trade-offs, highlight what's at stake, and help others reflect. Influence is surfacing the right questions at the right time.Where to find Dave:* Website* LinkedInStop piecing it together.

Oil and gas companies lie at the heart of the energy transition. To some, they are heroes, continuing to power human progress despite all the odds. To some, they are villains, responsible for the climate change that is devastating our planet. This week on Cleaning Up, Michael Liebreich interviews Ben van Beurden, former CEO of Shell from 2014 to 2023. The conversation explores the complexities of the energy transition, climate change, and the role of oil and gas companies in addressing global emissions.Van Beurden argues that there's no silver bullet solution to climate change, emphasizing the need for multiple approaches and a holistic view of energy transformation. He believes oil and gas companies will play a crucial role in developing clean energy solutions and driving systemic change, but ultimately we must move away from polluting fossil fuels in pursuit  of the prize of Clean Energy.Leadership Circle: Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. COVID and political uncertainty drove this "insurance policy" trend among the affluent.Switzerland built wealth by selling mercenaries, then banking services, then commodity trading — always profiting from what others can't do at home. Half the world's coffee/cocoa trades flow through landlocked Geneva. These offshore systems create stark inequality: rich people buy citizenship and hide assets while poor migrants face detention camps and deportation — wealth literally buys different rules and freedoms.Research your family history — you might qualify for EU citizenship through grandparents or heritage programs. Australia is known for its unusual animal life, from koalas to kangaroos. But once upon a time, the Australian landscape had even weirder fauna, like Palorchestes azael, a marsupial with immense claws and a small trunk. There was Protemnodon mamkurra, a massive, slow-moving, kangaroo-like creature. And Zygomaturus trilobus, a wombat the size of a hippo. They're all extinct now, and researchers are trying to figure out why. Host Flora Lichtman talks with researcher Carli Peters about ZooMS, a technique that allows researchers to use collagen from ancient bone fragments to identify species, offering clues to those ancient extinction events. Peters recently described using the technique in the journal Frontiers in Mammal Science. And, a recent study in the journal Nature Astronomy hints that our own Milky Way galaxy may not be doomed to collide with Andromeda after all. Where in the world am I? Eurail Travel planning   Hi there, I'm Dr. Mary Travelbest. I'm in San Diego now, sharing my best travel ideas and working on another book for you to enjoy: 5 Steps to Solo Travel, Part C. I'm about to launch on a 90-day trip around the world.   Listener Story Spotlight I want to tell you about a listener named Kristen. Kristen loves to travel. She recently received a Fullbright Scholarship and took a trip with her husband and sons to a foreign country, Portugal, for several months. She's full of great travel ideas and will be helpful as I continue to travel and make my adventures more mobile. She's encouraging me to keep going in my travels and is a professor in Southern California. Quick fire FAQ: The FAQ for today is:  Do you find that air travel dries your sinuses? Do you get dry and scratchy throats afterward? Yes, it happens. Let's talk about how to rid yourself of this in advance.    How to avoid the dryness of airline flights? The answer:   My solution is Saline Nasal Spray. I bought the 1.5-oz size for $4.00, which will last my entire trip. Before you get dry sinuses, squirt some in each nostril and then relax as it goes to work. What are the ingredients? Water, sodium chloride, disodium phosphate, benzyl alcohol, sodium phosphate, and benzalkonium chloride. Water and salt. There are three ways to use it: Squeeze twice in each nostril, and it delivers a spray, a stream, and a drop upside down. Take your pick. 60-second confidence challenge   Advice for Active Seniors :  “There is no shame in prioritizing and slowing down vs. overdoing. Most injuries happen when people are rushing. “Go slower, arrive sooner” is a helpful mantra.”  (Ellen McCabe) If you like today's Confidence Challenge, Chapter 2 of my book dives deeper buy it on Amazon or https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com   See Book A for addressing all of these items.   Today's destination is Eurail Travel Planning I said: You are traveling in Europe in the Summer of 2025. You arrive in Athens, Greece, then go to Krakow, Warsaw, Poland, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, and end in Edinburgh, Scotland, where you leave the EU. You will travel for five weeks. How many days will you want to use the Eurail pass for trains and ferries? Plan the trip, including seat fees and senior discounts with these countries, and suggest other places that would be a good stopping point or worth seeing. I am a solo woman in my prime. Include a mention of the low-cost airlines that I should take when not on the train or ferry.   Answer:   1  Where a Eurail day genuinely saves you money Below is every leg: (a) scenic or pricey at full fare and (b) covered or discounted by the pass if the trip is a low-fare train, like under $10.regional hop, we skip the past day and just pay cash—why burn powder you might need later?    1  Day 3 Athens → Kalabaka  €3 IC seat  Sunset over Meteora cliffs—worth the four-hour train.  2  Day 5 Kalabaka → Thessaloníki  free (regional) No supplement, but one more travel day.  3  Day 9 Krakow → Oświęcim (return) free (regional) Auschwitz day trip; counts once.  4  Day 11 Krakow → Warsaw (EIP)  ~PLN 35 ≈ €8  High‑speed, mandatory seat.  5  Day 13 Warsaw → Gdańsk or Toruń (optional)  PLN 3 ≈ €0.70 Use if you “dive” north.  6  Day 16 Tallinn → Helsinki ferry  deck = free; cabin = ‑20 %  Tallink Silja It counts oas ne travel day.  7  Day 17 Helsinki → Tampere & back  €0–€6 VR seat  Eurail Pendolino; book in app.  8  Day 19 Helsinki o/night ferry → Stockholm  deck = free; cabin –20 % Same Tallink perk.  9  Day 21 Stockholm → Uppsala (return)  €0 (regional) Same‑day out‑and‑back.  10  Day 22 Stockholm → Gothenburg  ≈ €7 SJ seat  Eurail Community 3 h X2000.  11  Day 23 Gothenburg → Oslo  free No reservations.  12  Day 25 Oslo → Bergen  ≈ NOK 50 ≈ €4 seat Bergensbanen panorama.  13  Day 26 Bergen → Flåm train + Nærøyfjord boat  boat covered A rail‑and‑fjord combo.  14  Day 30 Copenhagen → Roskilde day‑trip  ≈ €9 seat  Eurail Vikings have & an easy return.  15  Day 32 Edinburgh → Inverness  £0–£5 seat UK still in the Eurail network.   * Fees are 2ᵈ ‑class, summer 2025 published rates.   Total Eurail travel days = 15 – the cap of the 15‑days‑in‑2‑months Senior Global Pass  2  What about the long, awkward gaps? Why wrestle with two‑day rail marathons when a 90‑minute hop costs less than your hostel?   Segment Suggested airline(s) Typical July fare if bought 3 mo ahead Thessaloníki ✈ Krakow Ryanair, Aegean €55–€85 Warsaw ✈ Tallinn airBaltic, LOT, Ryanair €45–€90 Bergen ✈ Copenhagen Norwegian, SAS €65–€110 Copenhagen ✈ Edinburgh easyJet, Ryanair, Norwegian €40–€80   Question: could you train Thessaloníki→Krakow via Budapest? Yes—but it burns 2‑3 pass days plus €30‑€45 in night‑train supplements. The low‑cost flight is simply cheaper and quicker.   3  Five‑week skeleton itinerary   Week Base & ideas Safety‑first extras for a 65‑yr‑old solo traveler  1 Athens 3 d – dawn Acropolis, Plaka food walk → train to Meteora 2 d (monastery sunsets) → Thessaloníki 2 d for Byzantine walls & waterfront. Central hotels near Syntagma & Aristotelous squares; use the eat taxi app after dark.  2 Fly to Krakow 3 d (+ Auschwitz) → Warsaw 2 d → optional day to Toruń or Gdańsk. Women‑only dorms at Greg & Tom (Krakow) and OkiDoki (Warsaw); trains arrive before dusk.  3 Fly to Tallinn 2 d → ferry to Helsinki 3 d with day‑trip to Tampere—Telliskivi creative city, Suomenlinna flat walks; Bolt taxis for late returns.  4 Night ferry to Stockholm 3 d (+ Uppsala) → train to Gothenburg 2 d → rail to Oslo 2 d. Stockholm hostel “City Backpackers” has curtained bunks; carry Rail Planner live‑trip link to share location.  5 Oslo‑Bergen rail & fjords 3 d → Fly to Copenhagen 3 d (+ Roskilde) → Fly to Edinburgh; finish with Highlands loop 4 d (Inverness, Aviemore hikes) before departure. Fjord cruise boats have good handrails; Scottish B&Bs offer single rooms beside stations.   4  Is the pass still worth it? That's $200-250 saved, plus the flexibility to reroute if wildfires, strikes, or your whims intervene.   5  Quick checklist before you lock it in Buy the Senior Global Pass (15 days/2 months) before prices rise.   Book the four trains with limited seats (EIP Poland, X2000 Sweden, Bergensbanen, Copenhagen reservations) as soon as reservations open—usually 60–90 days in advance.   Use the Rail Planner app to activate travel days on the morning you board; keep two blanks until the very end in case you shuffle plans.   Flights: watch Friday flash sales on Ryanair/Norwegian; they routinely drop

The main reason is that we are "lucky" to have high ceilings. Yes, it's nice because it makes your apartment look bigger, but that comes with a few challenges. The number challenge is, A LOT of wall space.. what do we put there, and how much wall art is too much wall art? lol We hope you enjoy this episode! *As you already know, we're currently in Lisbon, Portugal. It's been amazing so far! Check out our personal IG stories to see what we did today. But only if you want! lol See ya next week!

Send us a textImagine getting paid real cryptocurrency simply for walking. This isn't science fiction. It's the revolutionary model created by Sweat Economy that's bringing the next billion users into Web3 through something everyone already does daily.Walking through the breathtaking hills of Sintra, Portugal, Oleg Fomenko shares Sweat Economy's remarkable journey from their early days as Sweatcoin in 2014 to becoming one of the world's most downloaded fitness apps. Initially constrained by blockchain limitations, they operated centrally until 2022, when technology finally caught up with their vision. Now, through their Sweat token and non-custodial wallet, they've created a seamless experience that addresses the three critical barriers keeping mainstream users from embracing crypto: complicated products, poor user experience, and prohibitive entry costs. What makes their approach particularly refreshing is their focus on active users rather than Total Value Locked (TVL). While much of the crypto industry chases capital from whales, Sweat Economy builds for real people with real needs. "We want to bring the next billion people into Web3 and do it in an easy to understand, easy to use, and no barriers way," Oleg explains while demonstrating their model in real-time during our walking podcast.Their tokenomics incorporate clever mechanisms like requiring more steps for each additional token (similar to Bitcoin halving but happening continuously), and they've created innovative utility including activity-based staking—walk 10,000 steps today, earn 10% APY tomorrow—and an upcoming universal gas token feature letting users "pay fees with their feet" across multiple blockchains.Comparing crypto's current state to the internet around 2000, Oleg paints an exciting picture of what's next: "We're on the cusp of switching to consumer crypto... That gave us Google in 2003, Facebook in 2007. And that's where bulk of the returns and money on the internet were made." This shift from infrastructure to consumer applications is where Sweat Economy is positioning itself at the forefront. This episode was recorded during a walk in Sintra on June 12, 2025. What happens if the Amazon rainforest stops absorbing carbon and starts releasing it? Do we need geoengineering to help us cool an overheating planet? And how can developing countries balance environmental preservation with economic development? This week on Cleaning Up, Baroness Bryony Worthington sits down with Thelma Krug, a renowned Brazilian scientist and mathematician, and former vice chair of the IPCC, to explore these critical questions.Krug offers an insider's perspective, drawing from her decades of experience monitoring the Amazon rainforest and participating in international climate negotiations. The conversation ranges from the alarming transformation of the Amazon from a carbon sink to a potential carbon source, to the controversial realm of solar radiation management. He created and produced, ‘The Cork Dorks'. The show was hosted with Adam and his good friend Jeremy West. It was the first of its kind. It began focusing on central coast wineries but as the show grew, so did their ability to travel and meet other winemakers they found everywhere from Napa to Bordeaux that adopted that same Central Coast quality of people willing to share their wines, and their stories. As the area's producer's grew, soon Adam's interview's covered everything from spirits, craft beer, cider, cuisine, hospitality, and more. Fast forward to today, the spirit and enthusiasm cultivated with the award winning show, is reborn as The Pour with Adam Montiel, this time independently, and unfettered by corporate authority leaving it even more free to share the journey of making wine more approachable and fun for everyone.  Here, We Taste It. Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHErica is busy working on her first novel with her name on it and it's harder than she thought it would be now that its her name on the cover. Nico and her have been dating for 5 months and he proposes! She says yes! And Anna surprises Erica by being there for it! But she can't stay long because she's off to Spain to eat some food and review it for her blog which has really taken off. She finds out about this spice, Saffron. She tries to find out what it is but it's a secret. She meets a man named Javier whose family runs the saffron farm and he refuses her request for an interview. His family isn't in it for the fame and the hype, and their methods are a well-kept secret. Despite that, he and Anna hit it off when they end up sitting together at a restaurant. After dinner, she's like I could talk to you all night and he's like well why don't we? They get ice cream, he holds her hand, and he says he wishes he could grant access for an interview but his family is kinda mad at him right now but won't say why. She's like I don't want to talk about that right now. Instead, they jus KISS! IT's like before the first commercial break. I don't really know what to do with that info. The next day, she gets a call from her agent and she tells her that there's this big magazine that is potentially interested in hiring her for their international food reviews. All she has to do is write about something that no one has ever written about before and submit it. No big deal. She decides she's gonna go to Portugal to find something but her car battery dies. Anna's car breaks down right outside Javier's village the next day, and he offers her a bed to sleep in until the car can be charged. Typically, you wouldn't think that to be a big deal, but when her family discovers that there is a random women in the family guest room. Things go nuts! Javier explains that the day he met Anna, he was supposed to be meeting with a matchmaker who was going to set him up with a wife because he's not allowed to inherit his family farm until he's married. Standard.Javier only has until the next harvest to get married, or else he loses his claim to the farm. There's a lot of rules here. So, naturally they assume that she is his fiancée. So they make an agreement -  she'll stay and live there through the harvest pretending to be his fiancée, if he'll let her write an article about his family farm for her website.Erica ends up showing up still thinking Anna's broken-down car needs help, and she's pulled into the ruse too.Anna starts to really enjoy living with Javier's family though – she has no family of her own back home – and starts to wish it was all real. And Erica starts to be inspired as well by Javier's family and is using them as inspiration for her book. Ultimately, everything comes out and it's a whole thing and Erica and Anna end up getting in a fight. They end up making up and we see Erica get married. And Anna and Javier make ip and the family gives her the ok to publish the story and they decide to give the relationship a real start and they kiss.

I expand even more on how we can use this perspective in sobriety and in any challenges life throws our way! Iran and Israel continue trading strikes, seventy-two hours after Israel launched an attack against Iran's nuclear infrastructure and key military figures. We speak to key figures in the region to understand Israel's aims, the role of US diplomacy and how Iran might respond in the future.
