Host Ricky Sacks is joined by Richard Cracknell, Jaon McGovern and Marlon as our visit to Asia ended in in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United on an emotional evening for skipper Heung-Min Son, appearing in his hometown just a day after announcing his intention to leave the Club. Following Thursday's defeat of Arsenal in Hong Kong, we rounded off this year's pre-season tour with a competitive clash against the Magpies in Seoul, South Korea, with Brennan Johnson's early goal cancelled out by Harvey Barnes in the Coupang Play Series. Following his announcement on Saturday, Son was selected to start by new Head Coach Thomas Frank and wore the armband at a venue he knows so well as captain of his country, with his substitution from the pitch in the 64th minute a poignant moment. Unfortunately though, James Maddison left the pitch on a stretcher in the closing stages after pulling up with no-one around him, clearly in distress. Spurs also announced the signing of João Palhinha on loan from FC Bayern, subject to international clearance and work permit. The 30-year-old Portugal international joins the Club on loan until the end of the 2025/26 season with an option to make the move permanent next summer. WiFi, Bluetooth, and mobile networks are familiar names in wireless communication - but there's a fourth contender transforming everything from city water systems to African wildlife conservation. LPWAN - or Low Power Wide Area Network technology - is used when you need to send small amounts of data over long distances, using very little power. We head to rural Portugal where it's used for solar and water systems, and from conservation parks in Africa to find out how this low-cost network could become the most influential wireless tech of them all.Produced and presented by Alastair Leithead(Image: An adult female Iberian Lynx named Lava with GPS tracking collar on January 12, 2023 in Toledo, Spain. Is the US about to enter a new era of energy inflation? Can technological progress outpace political regression? Are we witnessing the permanent end of America's climate ambitions? This week on Cleaning Up, Michael Liebreich sits down with Ethan Zindler, former climate counselor to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, now head of countries and policy at BloombergNEF, to dissect the dramatic shifts in US energy policy. Fresh from the passage of the "One Big Beautiful Bill," Zindler reveals how recent legislation in the US could set back clean energy development by years, potentially undermining investments in wind, solar and electric vehicles. There are a couple of brighter spots too, with costs in some technologies falling so rapidly that they might escape the drag of the current administration, and other technologies — like advanced geothermal and nuclear — seeing an uptick in support. Zindler brings the latest analysis from BloombergNEF to Cleaning Up to help unpack the One Big Beautiful Bill and what it means for the future of US energy policy.Leadership Circle: Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. It's the Day Before Rowling's 60th birthday so Nick and John tackle by reader request the never before discussed subject of the Lost Child theme in the author's more than twenty published works. They re-introduce the Golden Threads idea — see their Pregnancy Trap podcast or the two Kanreki series on this subject (here and here) — then they do a deep dive into the crowded waters of Lost Children in her work, and then they go out out on a high-wire to speculate about what specific spring in her Lake subconscious mind is responsible for this recurrent inspiration. Enjoy!New to the Lake and Shed Kanreki Birthday series? Here's what we're doing:On 31 July 2025, Joanne Murray, aka J. K. Rowling and Robert Galbraith, will be celebrating her 60th birthday. This celebration is considered a ‘second birth' in Japan or Kanreki because it is the completion of the oriental astrological cycle. To mark JKR's Kanreki, Dr John Granger and Nick Jeffery, both Nipponophiles, are reading through Rowling's twenty-one published works and reviewing them in light of the author's writing process, her ‘Lake and Shed' metaphor. The ‘Lake' is the biographical source of her inspiration; the ‘Shed' is the alocal place of her intentional artistry, in which garage she transforms the biographical stuff provided by her subconscious mind into the archetypal stories that have made her the most important author of her age. You can hear Nick and John discuss this process and their birthday project at the first entry in this series of posts: Happy Birthday, JKR! A Lake and Shed Celebration of her Life and Work.Tomorrow? John and Nick pull out all the stops on Rowling's 60th birthday to challenge the status quo of Rowling Studies with a reading of her work in light of a possible inspiration for the ubiquitous ‘Lost Child' Golden Thread in her work. Vinho Verde is one of the best-known wines from Portugal. It comes from the Northwest portion of Portugal. The area is green because of its Atlantic Ocean influences as well as denoting the “green” wine that is made from grapes that are less than fully ripe. It comes in both red, white, and rose'. The red wines are mostly consumed locally and is an extremely fruity wine. The white wines are typically blends made from a slew of local grape varieties. The area gets a lot of rain. The proximity to the ocean and the elevation is the two main influences on the vineyards. Tonight, we are enjoying:2024 Roseta Vinho Rose. I purchased at Trader Joe's for $5.99. The Now And Zin Wine website says the wine has a slight frizzante, and nose of ripe red strawberries and cherries, with floral notes in the background. Tastes of red fruit, with delicate citrus coming later. Very refreshing, especially with the slight carbonation. This wine is unique with a slight fiz (carbonation). It's main flavor is strawberry and cherry, but it is a subdued flavor and not over-powering. We both gave the wine a 3-rating. While it is not my type of wine, but I think some people would really enjoy. Next week we will start atwo-week exploration of Portugal.

3363: ABB on Building a Smarter and More Resilient Power Grid

When we think about innovation in technology, power grids rarely enter the spotlight. Yet, they are the foundation for everything from artificial intelligence to electric vehicles and data centers. In this episode, I spoke with Adrian Guggisberg, President of the Smart Power Division at ABB, to unpack the evolving role of electrical power distribution in a world shifting rapidly toward digital infrastructure and clean energy. Adrian joined me from Zurich to share how ABB is helping grid operators navigate an increasingly complex landscape. With rising pressure from extreme weather, surging energy demand, and growing decentralization of power sources, the traditional grid model is being challenged on multiple fronts. We explored recent high-profile outages like the Heathrow disruption and the cascading blackouts in Spain and Portugal, and what these incidents reveal about systemic vulnerabilities. What stood out was Adrian's clear message that resilience is no longer optional. He walked me through how switchgear plays a vital role in controlling flow, isolating faults, and restoring power with precision. Rather than waiting for outages to happen, ABB is championing a smarter, decentralized approach that supports microgrids and localized decision-making. The transition to intelligent infrastructure requires investment, digital tools, and collaboration across public and private sectors. We also discussed the cultural and political shift required to truly modernize the grid. Adrian pointed out that while grid operators understand the urgency, public awareness and policymaker support will be key to driving progress. His optimism came through clearly, especially when he talked about ABB's purpose in powering a more sustainable future. If energy is the backbone of society, then conversations like this are the starting point for building something stronger. What would a smarter grid mean for the communities and industries you serve?

I've been around of while.  I've seen and heard hundreds, if not thousands, of live music performances.  Everything from my first concert in 1965 for The Righteous Brothers in St. Louis  to Loretta Lynn at the Ryman Auditorium inNashville, Tennessee. I've been present in locked fado clubs in Lisbon and Porto, Portugal witnessing some of the most profound and emotional music ever performed.    I've sat mere steps away from Guy Clark and Verlon Thompson, Rodney Crowell, Bonnie Raitt, John Fullbright, Steve Earle…. On and on.  I know myself to have been in the presence of folks at the pinnacle of so-called American Roots Music. I felt no less inspired and awed on a Monday night in KansasCity with about 50 other folks listening to an 18 year old lyrical master from Ft. Worth Texas and his partner in music for the evening, Abe Partridge of Mobile, Alabama.Jack started performing original songs at age nine and hasshared the stage with artists like Ray Wylie Hubbard and Wynonna Judd. His mature and heart wrenching lyrics, soulful voice and master guitar skills  pay homage to country music and blues influences. Inspired by legends like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Johnny Cash, yet with a voice and point of view all his own, Jack is on track to have career thatwill only mature and flourish in the coming decades.  Do not miss an opportunity to see and support him.We had a bumpy start trying to make the phone connection for this conversation but we finally got it together.  Enjoy my first interview with Jack Barksdale…. I hope to speak to him again someday and wish him nothing but the best.

Last October, Patrick Leonard opened Postcard Bookshop, fusing his love for literature with his love for travel. Located in Portland’s Central Eastside neighborhood, the store’s shelves are organized according to countries or regions, from Africa to Oceania and the Pacific Northwest. In addition to travel guides, phrase books and cookbooks showcasing world cuisines, novels on display provide passage to new cultures and worldly journeys.   But running a bookstore geared to customers planning or returning from vacations has made Leonard rethink what it means to be a global traveler today. From Google Translate to Instagram, Airbnb and Uber, social media and apps are changing tourism and the communities impacted by it. Throngs of visitors to popular destinations are fueling a rise in overtourism which is straining resources, prompting street protests and pricing locals out of the housing market, from Hawai’i to Portugal. Leonard joins us for a discussion about overtourism and the challenge of being an ethical tourist.
