Today, we're looking at a wooden house revolution that's happening in Europe. Concrete's carbon footprint is turning architects and construction companies towards trees. In Portugal, a rush of new residents to the sparsely populated rural areas – and a lack of builders – is driving the flat-pack and modular wooden house market. Many of these rural plots often have a ruined, abandoned house on them, creating opportunities for faster construction. We also meet an architect who has dedicated his life to building in wood, championing a material he believes is key to more sustainable design. If you'd like to get in touch with the team, our email address is businessdaily@bbc.co.ukPresented and produced by Alastair LeitheadBusiness Daily is the home of in-depth audio journalism devoted to the world of money and work. Expulsions from England (1290), France (multiple times), Spain (1492), Portugal (1497), countless German states, Italian cities, and beyond—stretching back to antiquity and forward to 20th-century Arab countries. Historians document hundreds of instances across 2,000+ years. Tonight on the show, we trace the major waves, examine the recurring accusations and triggers (from blood libels to economic scapegoating), and explore why this might be relevant today.
Endurance adventurer Sean Conway has lived a life defined by adventure, resilience and a relentless desire to do hard things. Driven by curiosity and an appetite for pushing beyond what most consider possible, Sean has built a career out of testing the very edges of human endurance. He is the man who completed 105 full distance triathlons in 105 consecutive days, breaking the world record for the most consecutive full Iron distance triathlons. He became the first person to swim the length of Britain, a 900 mile journey from Land's End to John o' Groats. He has cycled 4,000 miles self-supported across Europe from Portugal to Russia faster than anyone before him. He completed the world's longest triathlon, a continuous 4,200 mile ultra triathlon around the coast of Great Britain. He has cycled around the world, yes around the world, completed multiple marathon and ultra runs including 15 marathons in 15 national parks in 15 days. And that is only a tiny snapshot of an extraordinary endurance resume he has achieved since first delving into the wonderful world of endurance sport. Born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa on vast wildlife conservation parks, Sean didn't grow up sporty. His first dream was to travel the world as a National Geographic photographer. When that ambition didn't materialise, he pivoted, choosing endurance as his vehicle for exploration and purpose. In doing so, he wrote himself into the record books on multiple occasions, becoming the first person to complete an Endurance Grand Slam; achieving a world's first, world's longest, world's fastest and world's most. Inspired by boundary breakers who redefined what endurance could look like, Sean has not only chased records himself, he now coaches, mentors and encourages others to test their own limits. A motivational speaker and author of multiple books, in this episode, we explore his philosophy of deliberately choosing difficult paths, what fuels his fear of living an ordinary life and how he continues to test what he's truly capable of. This is an incredible conversation on resilience, reinvention and building a life exploring the hard road, on purpose. An episode well worth tuning into. Welcome to episode two of season ten of the Regenerative Skills podcast. As I mentioned last time, the show is changing this year: we're moving to two episodes a month, and I'll be alternating between two formats. The first is the panel conversations that have become a favorite over the last couple of years—three guests, three perspectives, one question that keeps surfacing inside the Climate Farmers community. The second format is what we're launching today: Deep Dives. These are my attempt to bring complexity back into regenerative agriculture at a time when the online discourse is increasingly dominated by slogans, hot takes, and click-bait certainty. In these episodes we'll weave narrative, investigative threads, and carefully chosen interview excerpts—not to land on a single “correct” stance, but to help you feel the texture of the problem and the tradeoffs behind each position. Today's Deep Dive is a question that provokes strong opinions for good reason: who gets to say what “regenerative” means? Rather than offering a definitive answer, I'm inviting you to sit with the motivations and incentives that shape any definition—whether it's coming from farmers, certifiers, nonprofits, corporations, or measurement platforms. You'll hear from Joao and Diogo of Monte Silveira in central Portugal—one of the first large farms in the country to achieve Regenerative Organic Certification—on why certification mattered to their market strategy without changing how they manage the land. You'll hear from Ana Digon of the Iberian Regenerative Agriculture Association on how organic standards became diluted and why her network built a farmer-led, principle-based definition to protect integrity. We'll bring in Benjamin Fahrer, who helped guide the ROC certification process and wrestles with who should have the authority to set standards, and we'll close with Phil Fernandez, who led Climate Farmers' MRV work and explains why definitions become unavoidable once monitoring, reporting, and compliance enter the picture. Along the way I'll name the many other perspectives shaping this debate online—from soil-health purists and carbon-first programs to agroecology, corporate “regen” initiatives, and the often-overlooked critique of appropriation from Indigenous and peasant traditions—and we'll end by pointing to the deeper issue behind the whole mess: the loss of relationship and trust in our food systems. Next month we go practical: measuring regeneration—what's worth tracking, what gets distorted, and how we stay grounded when dashboards start pretending to be truth.

Anneke Hogeland, co-author of The Trituration Handbook: Into the Heart of Homeopathy, walks us through the practice of triturations, a careful process of preparing remedies that often gets overlooked in homeopathy. She shares how her training in the Netherlands and collaboration with Judy Schriebman led to the creation of their definitive guide, filling a gap in how triturations are taught and practiced. The conversation explores practical examples, from bird remedies to calendula and persimmon, showing how these preparations can reveal both physical and emotional insights. Anneke also talks about the unexpected challenges of triturations and how to approach them with awareness and intention. Stories from her work, including a patient with cancer, highlight the real-world impact these remedies can have when carefully prepared. Episode Highlights: 02:44 - How it all began 06:46 - The sign of a successful trituration 10:54 - An unforgettable experience 13:10 - How calendula helps old wounds 16:12 - Upcoming Trituration of Male and Female Feathers 19:27 - The Persimmon Remedy 25:51 - Proving stories: unexpected effects 30:46 - Experimenting with Trituration Techniques 37:42 - Finding what works best 39:54 - The Role of Communication in Triturations 44:00 - One-day vs multi-day triturations 48:11 - Interpretation of animal appearances 51:17 - Following the dream thread 55:58 - Should family expect unusual behavior when doing trituration? 01:01:28 - Best place to purchase Anneke's books 01:08:30 - Anneke's first homeopathic experience About my Guests: ANNEKE C.H. HOGELAND, MS, MFT (1948 – present) practiced as a homeopath, psycho therapist, and hypnosis expert in and around Berkeley, California. Anneke leads Family Constellation Therapy workshops worldwide. She graduated from the Pacific Academy of Homeopathy in San Francisco in 2000. A Dutch citizen, she first came to the U.S. in the late sixties for college, but soon after her arrival became completely enchanted with hot air ballooning. She traveled the world for many years as one of the first female commercial balloon pilots and set a world altitude record at 28,036 feet in 1977. Early in her homeopathic career, Anneke studied extensively with European homeopaths and found the quality of teaching, research and practice was frequently moving into realms that were not discussed in American schools. In Germany they were triturating remedies to higher levels (C4 homeopathy) leading to a greater understanding of remedies. Jan Scholten was classifying the minerals and elements. Roger van Zandvoort was working on the Millenium repertory, and researcher Frans Vermeulen was organizing and correcting the entire Materia Medica in significant ways. Alize Timmerman, as the foremost proponent of C4 homeopathy in the Netherlands, was spreading this work far and wide across the world. As the founder of HomeopathyWest, Anneke has organized many homeopathic seminars in the San Francisco Bay Area; Judy continues this work. Anneke is semi-retired now and moved to Portugal in 2018.
