Up until the age of 12, Matt had lived a very typical life for a child in the city of Sydney. He had a great family, lots of friends, and a comforting neighborhood BUT then everything changed drastically. Matthew began to question his self-worth, self-image, and whether he even brought value to the world. As the tentacles of depression embedded in his life, his worthlessness increased and he struggled with these emotions by himself, bottled them up inside, and kept them within. This led him on a path of destruction with drug use and at the age of 16 decided that enough was enough and he attempted suicide to end the pain and suffering he was feeling. Thankfully for us, Matt was unsuccessful and woke up instead in the Spinal Cord Injury until in hospital unable to walk and confined to a wheelchair. Guest, Chantal Gerady, Facebook Strategist, marketing success for smaller businesses Over the past decade, Chantal has worked in the fitness industry beginning as a part-time personal trainer, working around three small children after emigrating from South Africa to the Gold Coast in 2008. Initially, Chantal worked for other people but like all true entrepreneurs, she saw how she could improve on the current model of delivering personal training, opening her own fitness business in 2010. Chantal then branched out opening a health, wellness, and fitness center to support other professionals in my industry. Her biggest challenge was, she didn't know what she didn't know. Beginning a new business meant Chantal had to start again, over and over, finding new clients without a marketing budget. She was overwhelmed, confused, and worn out. Chantal didn't know how to use social media effectively and couldn't afford someone to help. Facebook became my ‘GO TO' platform. The biggest bonus of having to start over again was that Chantal learned how NOT to do things. After winning the Empowered Mums award in 2015 for her work helping other health, wellness, and fitness businesses, Chantal began to invest in learning how to better Coach Business owners on how to use Facebook. Chantal saw a lot of ‘experts' spruiking how to do Facebook, but she knew, as a solo business, having the money to employ someone to manage my social media for her was the challenge, and many ‘experts', had no clue on even the basics of how to set up or safely use the platform. Chantal got her Cert. IV In Small business and started niching on Facebook. She knew from my own experience, using Facebook to generate leads for free was/is possible by understanding how the platform and algorithm works. As a Facebook strategist over the last 4 years, Chantal has been able to show other business owners how to use Facebook to market and grow their businesses. Many people do not understand Facebook and Chantal empowered them and gave them the skills to use it safely, and effectively without it costing them a fortune. Chantal found customers for BOTH of her businesses on Facebook using her program, demonstrating how effective her program is. Chantal's target audience is other micro/small businesses like hers – solo operators or with 2 to 3 employees, without a big marketing budget. Our extra special guest today is Patrick Hromas with our interview titled Patrick Hromas Artist: Film Still Portraits, Horses, Brasfort and Bowie Patrick is a visual artist who was born in Sydney in 1973 and grew up in Hunters Hill. He has been making art ever since he can remember, drawing the Hunters Hill Post Office when I was 13, “built-in 1891 as designed by the government architect, Walter Liberty Vernon, in Queen Anne Style”. Patrick graduated from the Canberra School of Art, Australian National University, in 1996. He enjoyed an enriching experience as a student exchange recipient with Ecole Nationalé Superieur des Beaux Artes for five months in 1995/6. I suffered from a mental health problem after being hospitalized in Nîmes in the South of France. Now Patrick has largely overcome that health issue, he draws in pastels or conté, paints in oil colors, and occasionally watercolors. Patrick has shown his artworks in seven solo shows and 48 group exhibitions, as far west as Kingston in the ACT, as far north as Pymble in NSW, as far east as Bronte, and far south as Action in the Australian Capital Territory. As a member of the Blue Mountains Community Arts Network, Patrick was invited to exhibit his painting: “Macquarie Road (Why should you be different from other men? I am told that there is hardly a husband in London who does not waste his life over some shameful passion.)” in the group exhibition: Infinities of Blue, in the Fountain Court at Parliament House of New South Wales. Most notably, one of Patrick's hand-printed, hand typeset artists' books is in the collection of the Australian National University Library, Acton, ACT. Patrick adores drawing sitters' portraits in pastel or conté generally from .jpegs, adding a background image from their favorite holiday happy snaps. Conté is a hard, waxy stick like a crayon and is virtually indelible once applied to fine art paper. Patrick only uses archival-quality materials throughout his practice. He is also a registered NSW eco-aware artist. Patrick constructs, using Photoshop, mock-ups for the collages or oil paintings by scavenging imagery as a Postmodern surrealist, from a variety of sources. Patrick then goes about weaving the figures in the .jpeg image and further teasing out forms, colors, and compositions, painting the final work from his iMac screen. Only when the balance between these elements and an even an absence or obscurification of the image is reached, so to let the eye rest, as instinct or aesthetics demand, is the painting complete.
Tyler Ornstein loved the taste and smell of coffee since his first sip at 5 years old, however, his father thought otherwise, as it upset his stomach. Expository writing – explain or expose, convey information to the reader to help them better understand something Descriptive writing – to write in a way that describes a place, time person or thing so as to paint a picture in the readers mind. Narrative writing – or story writing, with characters, conflict. 1st, 2nd and 3rd person. Persuasive writing – non fiction writing that encourages logical arguments or cohesive discussion. With the pilot still active, we have sent some data to MESHA for preliminary analysis, with an assessment to be provided in the next couple of weeks. Early feedback regarding the open-source keyboard, utilized solely for phase one pilot, was consistent with our assumptions, and has presented some challenges for pilot users, but is providing HCI with the necessary data to make an informed and objective assessment on our hypothesis. We have secured three pilot organizations for the 2nd Phase Pilot and have generated interest from other organizations, which we are exploring. Matching the funding dollar-for-dollar is a requirement of our application, so we appreciate anyone who can make a financial commitment. The due date is 30 April 2021 to demonstrate matched funding ($350,000). Failure to do so will require HCI to restart the RCSF application process again. While not preferable, it’s certainly not catastrophic. We have all of the documentation from the EOI stage, as well as the final application, and should be able to progress through quite quickly, with the results from phase one pilot in hand as well. We have submitted an application to a few VC and Angel funds. In addition to investor dinners/presentations through CoVentured and Innovation Bay, to help boost the raise. Results of some of our applications are still pending. However, our Impaqt Fund application is looking promising and we will have a result in early June. We have been selected as a finalist for Innovation Bay’s Startup Showcase at Southstart and will pitch on the 4th May in Adelaide. Our Southern Angels application has also been successful and we will be presenting to them on 3rd May. We are also exploring the 2:1:1 matched funding opportunity with the Digital Health CRC after recently speaking with CEO, Dr Terry Sweeney. Briony’s SheEO membership and involvement in SheEO and Chooks SA continues to be fruitful, providing great exposure and presenting some of our current opportunities and new investment. Our Social Lights Podcast interview took place last week and we are waiting for it to be published online. We presented at Australian Healthcare Week Pitchfest, after being selected as one of eight finalists from over 65 startups throughout Australia. We didn’t win but were honoured to be selected amongst some very high calibre (and well-funded) startups, gained some terrific exposure, received some excellent feedback and made some great connections. How do you protect a user's privacy whilst using this app? Our user's right to privacy has been at the forefront of every design decision we have made. Not breaching the trust of our users and setting the highest standard of integrity is paramount to us. 4. What sort of positive investment to you hope to achieve for organization? For organizations seeking competitive advantage, an investment in employee wellbeing is crucial in meeting organizational goals. What are some of the achievements for Frank so far? Our current shareholders are all South Australian based or ex-South Australians. We are an organization of choice for Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) internship program, mainly for machine learning. Our pilot is being independently run by Dr Miranda Van Hooff, Ex Director of Military and Emergency Services Health Australia. We have started securing foundation customer organizations such as Police Health and in final stages of negotiations and approvals with SA Department of Treasury and Finance, Scotch College and Gallagher Bassett. We have regularly seek the advice of our Advisory Board Chair Leesa Chesser, former SA Minister for Disability, Mental Health and Substance Abuse. Pilot The first phase of Frank's pilot is being facilitated by Dr Miranda van Hooff and her team at MESHA. The pilot is open to Australian Android users and over 200 people have been onboard so far. With the pilot still active, we have sent some data to MESHA for preliminary analysis, with an assessment to be provided in the next couple of weeks. Early feedback regarding the open-source keyboard, utilized solely for phase one pilot, was consistent with our assumptions, and has presented some challenges for pilot users, but is providing HCI with the necessary data to make an informed and objective assessment on our hypothesis. We have secured three pilot organizations for the 2nd Phase Pilot and have generated interest from other organizations, which we are exploring. Just a reminder that we have applied for a grant through the South Australian Government's Research and Commercialisation Startup Fund (RCSF). The RCSF grant will provide significant leverage for investors, with the grant (if approved) making up 44% of our investment round. Matching the funding dollar-for-dollar is a requirement of our application, so we appreciate anyone who can make a financial commitment. The due date is 30 April 2021 to demonstrate matched funding ($350,000). Failure to do so will require HCI to restart the RCSF application process again. While not preferable, it's certainly not catastrophic. We have all of the documentation from the EOI stage, as well as the final application, and should be able to progress through quite quickly, with the results from phase one pilot in hand as well. We have submitted an application to a few VC and Angel funds. In addition to investor dinners/presentations through CoVentured and Innovation Bay, to help boost the raise. Results of some of our applications are still pending. However, our Impaqt Fund application is looking promising and we will have a result in early June. We have been selected as a finalist for Innovation Bay's Startup Showcase at Southstart and will pitch on the 4th May in Adelaide. Our Southern Angels application has also been successful and we will be presenting to them on 3rd May. We are also exploring the 2:1:1 matched funding opportunity with the Digital Health CRC after recently speaking with CEO, Dr Terry Sweeney. Briony's SheEO membership and involvement in SheEO and Chooks SA continues to be fruitful, providing great exposure and presenting some of our current opportunities and new investment. Our Social Lights Podcast interview took place last week and we are waiting for it to be published online. We presented at Australian Healthcare Week Pitchfest, after being selected as one of eight finalists from over 65 startups throughout Australia. We didn't win but were honoured to be selected amongst some very high calibre (and well-funded) startups, gained some terrific exposure, received some excellent feedback and made some great connections. In a former life Kerryn was living the rockstar life - partying, performing for screaming fans, staying out all night, and basically believing I was the centre of the universe. “I am 35, my life is carefree, selfish, and somewhat reckless. I am performing at a leisure centre in the suburbs, lapping up all the admiration. We take a break and I get a phone call. That call would change my life forever…” Kerryn did everything within her power to keep her sister alive, but she failed… That event significantly changed her life. Kerryn was forced to think outside of herself and about the power she had to help others instead of putting all her energy into her own selfishness. She discovered how important and healing it was to live a life of meaning. Since 2003 Kerryn have been on a mission to build on this meaningfulness and have over the years propelled herself on an upward spiral to make a better life for herself, others, and ultimately the planet. In 2014, Kerryn wrote the award winning book ‘Magnificent Kids!' which showcases 23 superheroes who started world changing projects before the age of 18. Some were as young as 7! In a strange but wonderful turn of events, it was this book that led Kerryn to found One Planet Classrooms in 2015. One Planet Classrooms is a Not for Profit which supports schools and communities in Africa with projects such as clean water solutions, sustainability projects, women's empowerment and adult education programs, feminine hygiene solutions, as well as coordinating a sponsorship program that provides education for over 180 children. In 2018 Kerryn became wildly accountable after making a pledge to ‘launch a female focused initiative' in front of 300 women at an International Women's Day event. No backing out of that one! She co-founded Girls With Hammers which hosts conferences and workshops aimed at empowering women. In 2019 Kerryn released her book ‘Get Off The Bench!' which is about getting your project or idea out of your head, on to paper and into action. Why? Because so many people she worked with, have brilliant ideas but just don't know where to start. Sharmin Smith is on a mission to share her wisdom gained through her unique experiences. Shining a light in the darkness that exists in some of society is her calling! She is an abortion survivor and was raised by a mother who did not want her. She shares her story to help other people who have dealt with family trauma get through their pain. When she reached adulthood, she became a financial services expert. Sharmin has met many teams of people in the industry and is sought after for her experience in the financial industry. Due to childhood trauma, Sharmin was diagnosed with PTSD. Eventually leaving the financial industry, Sharmin took up writing as a form of therapy. In early 2015, Sharmin published the book “Taming The Tida,” about a reality tv show called “Who wants to be president?” In this story, a childhood trauma survivor runs for President against Hillary Clinton and runs on an anti-pedophile platform. Sharmin highlights serious changes that need to happen in our system, intending to make her readers think outside of the box! What started as one book turned into three! Sharmin later continued her 2015 book as a series, calling it the “Change the World” trilogy It's a while since we spoke together and I invited you on the show, I'm so glad to have you here today. You describe 400 orange helicopters converging from all points in the universe on the Parker County Court house, like bees swarming to the bee hive. What is this describing, and can you take our listeners back to that time and place? One on the Chapters in UP in the Air focuses on fate and the analogy you use is about fortune cookies. Let's talk about fate. How much does the concept of fate enter your mind as a young man flying combat missions in Vietnam in helicopters? How did you deal with this across your career and what are your thoughts about fate? The impact of being part of Vietnam left lifelong impacts, are you happy to talk about Vietnam Robert?
