James McConkie represents the first guest from Northern Ireland on the podcast, discussing how cannabis laws differ between Northern Ireland (part of the UK) and the Republic of Ireland.Medical cannabis is legal in the UK only by prescription, requiring patients to have one diagnosed condition and try two treatments before qualifying for medical cannabis access.James began selling drugs including cannabis and cocaine after his father's death at age 13, followed by his mother's cancer diagnosis six months later, leading him into illegal activities throughout his teens.Police intervention at age 20-21 served as a wake-up call for James, prompting him to completely change his life direction and stop selling drugs while facing potential prison time.Isolation and self-reflection became key strategies for James to distance himself from criminal associates and rebuild his life through meetings and personal development.ADHD and autism diagnoses came at age 25, explaining lifelong challenges James experienced with concentration, food textures and colors, and social interactions that he hadn't understood previously.Cannabis provides significant relief for James's ADHD symptoms including impulsiveness, inability to concentrate, and autism-related issues with appetite and sleep disorders.Medication reduction from five prescriptions to two occurred after James began using medical cannabis through private clinics in the UK.UK law requires medical cannabis patients to use only dry herb vaporizers rather than smoking, despite allowing cigarette smoking which is known to be harmful.James's mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and he has served as her primary caregiver since age 23, adding complexity to his personal challenges.Night terrors and sleep disturbances from traumatic experiences during his drug-dealing years have been significantly improved through cannabis use before bedtime.Private medical cannabis treatment costs up to 750 pounds per month in the UK, with premium flower costing 160 pounds for 10 grams.James now works as a cannabis advocate, collaborating with Life clinic in Northern Ireland to help others understand medical cannabis options and transition away from traditional medications. The Ash Said It Show gets an exclusive featuring Matt Janz, a key leader at Deep Roots Harvest. This conversation offers a high-level, strategic deep dive into how to build a dominant, trusted, and compliant Cannabis Brand in a hyper-regulated environment. Matt Janz provides an unparalleled look at how Deep Roots Harvest translates its 'Farm to Body' commitment—the transparency of seed-to-sale vertical integration—into compelling Marketing Content that effectively bypasses competitors focused solely on price. The conversation reveals top creative strategies used to navigate Nevada's notoriously strict cannabis advertising regulations (including the rigid 71.6% minimum adult audience rule) to deliver high-impact marketing and build genuine community. Janz further dissects the dynamics of the segmented market, detailing how they leverage sales data and consumer behavior insights (e.g., the success of Helix Twist Edibles) to prioritize marketing spend across their diverse product categories. The discussion also addresses the critical task of ensuring their Digital Marketing Journey seamlessly aligns with the Physical Dispensary Experience across their six Nevada locations to drive tangible foot traffic conversion. Finally, Janz tackles the critical challenge of maintaining the brand's unique 'Nevada roots' and local focus during the transition following their acquisition by a large Multi-State Operator (MSO), offering a blueprint for avoiding brand dilution during expansion into new regional markets. Web: https://www.deeprootsharvest.c... About the brand: Deep Roots Harvest is a leading vertically integrated cannabis operation headquartered in Nevada. Our mission is built on the "Farm to Body" philosophy, ensuring unmatched quality control and transparency throughout every stage, from cultivation to the final product. We offer a diverse portfolio of premium cannabis products, including award-winning Helix Twist Edibles, potent Concentrates, and high-quality Flower. With six strategically located Nevada dispensaries, Deep Roots is dedicated to setting the industry standard for compliance, consumer trust, and exceptional in-store experience. We are committed to fostering community connection while driving innovation in the Nevada cannabis market. We break down the three real obstacles every outsider faces: proving you actually live where you run, explaining how you made your money when the base is skeptical, and reconciling a donor history that points across the aisle. It's a case study in credibility, not cash. From there, we torch a viral claim that defense contractors script the weather forecast. Using real models and the logic of modern meteorology, we show how predictions come from physics and data, not memos and secret calls. Clear thinking beats clickbait, especially when storms—and emotions—run hot.Cost of living drives the middle stretch. We push past “the economy is great” soundbites to ask what would actually help: easing energy costs, clearing regulatory logjams, and being honest about tariffs' timing when prices are already sticky. On housing, we contrast a flashy 50-year mortgage with smarter mobility ideas like portable mortgage rates and curbing bulk buys of single-family homes by institutional investors. Affordability isn't a slogan; it's a set of decisions. We close with Senator John Fetterman's unusual willingness to cross his party on shutdown tactics and Israel—a risky choice that brought a wave of online venom. Whether you agree with him or not, standing on principle in an election year is rare. That's the thread tying this episode together: credibility earned in tough rooms, facts over theatrics, and policy that remembers who pays the bills. If this resonated, tap follow, share it with a friend who loves sharp politics without the spin, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show. Aging does not have to mean dimming the lights on your life, it can mean learning how to use the plant with intention so you stay sharp, mobile, and more you. Dr. Dana Lillestol joins us to translate stigma and science into simple steps families can actually use, from assisted living realities to one tiny experiment you can run this week. The honest state of senior wellness, why caregivers' attitudes make or break outcomes, and how families can advocate without the drama. How to introduce cannabis in elder communities where federal rules still block staff from administering it, plus practical workarounds that respect policy and dignity. CBG as a non-intoxicating entry point for anxiety, pain, eye pressure, and gut issues, including a real success story from Dana's community talks. Why joy matters, yes even bingo, bubbles, and art stations at elder-focused cannabis education events, because learning should feel good. The mindset shift, seniors are not done, and the plant can be one lever to improve sleep, mood, pain, and connection. Pick one target issue, anxiety, pain, sleep, gut discomfort. Try a single CBG product, keep the rest of your routine the same, track results for a week, keep or kill based on the data. Non-intoxicating, simple, measurable, reversible. Key PointsCraig identified his lymph nodes as the most difficult area to treat after the squamous cell carcinoma metastasized into his neck and spread rapidly through his body almost overnight.Black salve treatment was used successfully on two to three dozen skin cancers over several years, with one recurring lesion in the jawline requiring multiple treatments through the soft tissue.Craig's wife noticed a suspicious mole with irregular pattern and color changes, prompting her to urge him to seek medical attention despite his reluctance to visit doctors.Inspiration came from a friend named Mick from Port Lincoln who had laser skin cancer that progressed through multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation before doctors said they would remove his cheekbone and upper jaw as a final measure.Craig maintained a positive attitude throughout treatment, stating he was confident the natural protocols would work and never feared for his life, unlike many other cancer patients.Multiple lesions appeared simultaneously after waking one night with a line running from a head lesion down to his lymph nodes, creating a half golf ball-sized mass in his neck.Internal bloodroot capsules were taken as part of the treatment protocol, causing approximately 30 lesions to emerge on his back, arms, and legs all at once several weeks later.Rick Simpson oil was consumed at a dosage of two grams daily, taken as suppositories during daytime to maintain functionality and orally before bed mixed with coconut oil for better sleep.Family members expressed resistance and concern about the alternative treatment approach, with some calling him an idiot for thinking he knew better than doctors.Cannabis access in Australia has become easier through decriminalized status in some states and a government medicinal cannabis program, with much product imported from Canada.Comprehensive detox protocols included a clean organic vegan diet with no sugar, castor oil liver detox treatments, coffee enemas, heavy metal detox smoothies with cilantro, and Essiac tea.Craig's partner's 77-year-old mother was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer that had metastasized to her heart lining, with doctors stating there was nothing they could do.Treatment for the partner's mother included Rick Simpson oil mixed with frankincense and myrrh, plus the same vegan diet and detox protocols, along with Fenbendazole and Ivermectin.Eight weeks after starting alternative treatment, scans showed the partner's mother's stage four lung cancer was nearly all gone, with only small scar tissue remaining. Cannabis is going mainstream in Minnesota in ways that would have been hard to imagine just a few years ago. THC drinks are on store shelves. People talk about edibles and dispensaries as casually as they talk about coffee or craft breweries. For many young adults, cannabis has become part of everyday life — a way to unwind, manage stress or hang out with friends. Using it carries far less stigma than it once did and many people see it as safer than alcohol or tobacco. But even with growing acceptance, questions remain about how cannabis affects young adults, including their mental health, motivation, sleep, and focus. MPR News guest host Catharine Richert explores what research shows — and what we still don't know — about marijuana, health and young people. Guests:Heidi Glesmann is the substance use prevention, education, and recovery unit supervisor at the Minnesota Department of Health. She oversees the Be Cannabis Aware campaign, which is focused on educating youth under age 25, and the adults who support them, about cannabis use. Sylia Wilson is a researcher and associate professor at the Institute of Child Development in the College of Education and Development at the University of Minnesota. Her work looks at how substance use affects young people's health, behavior and development.
