Navigating Blended Families with Dr. Patricia Papernow Blending families can be both rewarding and challenging. In this insightful episode, we welcome Dr. Patricia Papernow, one of the world's foremost experts on blended families, to discuss the unique dynamics and strategies for success in stepfamily relationships. Dr. Papernow is the author of several books on the topic and has received Distinguished Contribution awards from both the American Family Therapy Academy and the American Psychological Association.Together, we explore four key reasons why understanding stepfamilies is crucial:Stepfamilies are everywhere. The challenges are intense. What works is not intuitive. We know what works.Dr. Papernow emphasizes that stepfamilies operate differently from first-time families. In biological families, parents and children share a natural attachment and cultural expectations. In stepfamilies, however, step-parents and step-children do not have this hardwired bond, leading to five major challenges:Stuck Outsiders & Stuck Insiders:The biological parent-child bond remains the secure base, often leaving step-parents feeling ignored, invisible, or rejected.Parents may feel torn between their partner and their child.Solution: Recognize this dynamic as normal, allow time for adjustment, and ensure both children and partners receive one-on-one time.Kids Face Loss & Loyalty Binds:Research shows blending families can be harder on children than divorce.Children may struggle with numerous changes and conflicting loyalties between their parents and step-parents.Solution: Ease the transition by spending undivided quality time with children and respecting their emotions.Parenting vs. Step-Parenting:Parents should take on the disciplinary role, not step-parents.Step-parents often seek more structure, while biological parents lean towards nurturing.Solution: Step-parents should focus on connection before correction and adopt an "authoritative" parenting style that leads with warmth rather than control.Building a New Family Culture:Stepfamilies must integrate at least two existing family cultures.Mistakes are part of the learning process.Solution: Be open to negotiation, respect individual preferences, and embrace the process of "learning by goofing."Navigating Relationships with an Ex-Spouse:High parental conflict is toxic to children.Avoid fighting with or speaking negatively about an ex in front of the kids.Solution: Support your child's relationship with your ex for their well-being.For more invaluable insights, check out Dr. Papernow's books and visit her website at stepfamilyrelationships.com.Tune in to this episode for expert guidance on creating a thriving blended family!Thank you for supporting Linda's Corner! Recently, Deb has been reflecting on her research, experiences, and her approach to fostering positive outcomes for kids, which she calls a “developmental-relational” approach. You have a mental disorder called social anxiety disorder. One of my students, his name is, Brian has an amazing, amazing, amazing story. One of his biggest things I want to show people is how to take that dream and put action behind that dream. But anything that you want to do you have to work for, it's not going to be just given to you. Some people are outliers where it is, but we don't live in an outlier society where 90% of that is happening. So think about your dream, the purpose behind your dream, know that there's going to be order behind that dream in order for you to really commit to it. Once you commit to it, there's gonna be a lot of white noise around you. But you have to learn how to treat that as surface level things and aim high. If you ever need resources, there are people out here for you, such as Black Boy Heal and other community resources.

Therapy on the Cutting Edge

In this episode, I interview Carolyn and Phil about their decades of research on couples and the changes they experience after the birth of the first child. They discussed how Carolyn had been an elementary school teacher and was pregnant with their second child when they moved to Berkeley where Phil was starting his new job at the University of California, Berkeley. They discussed how their own life experiences led them to be interested in the effect of having children on the couple's relationship, and created a study where couples joined a group during their third trimester of a first pregnancy, and worked together until their child was four months old. In comparison to the control group, who were not offered the couples group intervention, the couples in the groups maintained their relationship satisfaction, while the couples in the control couples with no intervention experienced a significant decrease in satisfaction, which was also reflected in studies by others that followed. The Cowans then worked with another group of couples from when their first child was making the transition to school, and followed them until the children entered high school at 14-15 years old. They discussed the exercises they used during these inventions, and how it was so significant for these couples to talk with their partners in a safe setting about the key issues in their lives and to hear others' experiences and discover that they were not alone during these difficult times. The first two studies were with nonclinical couples in the community. Later, they received a grant to work with low-income couples who had few resources for support, which was designed to increase fathers' engagement with the mothers and their children. Once again, they found positive results in terms of the quality of the couples' relationships as partners and parents, of parenting that was less harsh, of the children having fewer troubling behaviors, and in many cases, increases in income. Phil and Carolyn explained that the majority of current grant funding is siloed, with separate funding for children, for mothers, and for fathers, and and almost no programs taking a family systems view. They feel that the lack of a systemic perspective misses opportunities to take a broader perspective on family development and to work with parents, non parental caregivers, children, and fathers, which can lead to improved outcomes for parents and children, and be more efficient and cost effective. They referenced a study they are overseeing now that has also included employment support, since this is so integral in family functioning for low-income families. Their intervention work has been replicated in the U.K., Germany, Malta, and most recently in Israel. Philip A. Cowan, Ph.D. and Carolyn Pape Cowan, Ph.D. are clinical psychologists and professors Emeriti at University of California, Berkeley who have conducted three significant longitudinal research studies on couples relationships after the birth of the first child. They have received grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the California Office of Child Abuse Prevention. Their three projects, the Becoming a Family Project, the Schoolchildren and Families Project, and the Supporting Father Involvement Project, which is an ongoing collaboration with Marsha Kline Pruett, Ph.D., M.S.L. ABPP at Smith College and Yale University, have studied the effects of interventions on the couples relationship, father involvement, child wellbeing and a number of other factors. Their group model for couples is being conducted throughout California, in Connecticut, Alberta Canada, England, and Malta. Carolyn and Phil Cowan received the the Distinguished Contribution to Family Systems Research award from the American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA) and the Best Research Article award, along with Marsha and Kyle Pruett, Ph.D., M.S.L. ABPP and Jessie Wong, Ph.D., from the Men in Families Focus Group of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). They are the authors of When Partners Become Parents: The Big Life Change for Couples, and there are “training the trainer” trainings in their Supporting Father Involvement program through Brazelton Touchpoints Center, which is part of the Division of Developmental Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

Saul Bellow (born Solomon Bellows; June 10, 1915 – April 5, 2005) was a Canadian–American writer. For his literary work, Bellow was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the 1976 Nobel Prize in Literature, and the National Medal of Arts. He is the only writer to win the National Book Award for Fiction three times, and he received the National Book Foundation's lifetime Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 1990. In the words of the Swedish Nobel Committee, his writing exhibited "the mixture of rich picaresque novel and subtle analysis of our culture, of entertaining adventure, drastic and tragic episodes in quick succession interspersed with philosophic conversation, all developed by a commentator with a witty tongue and penetrating insight into the outer and inner complications that drive us to act, or prevent us from acting, and that can be called the dilemma of our age." His best-known works include The Adventures of Augie March, Henderson the Rain King, Herzog, Mr. Sammler's Planet, Seize the Day, Humboldt's Gift, and Ravelstein. Bellow said that of all his characters, Eugene Henderson, of Henderson the Rain King, was the one most like himself. Bellow grew up as an immigrant from Quebec. As Christopher Hitchens describes it, Bellow's fiction and principal characters reflect his own yearning for transcendence, a battle "to overcome not just ghetto conditions but also ghetto psychoses." Bellow's protagonists wrestle with what Albert Corde, the dean in The Dean's December, called "the big-scale insanities of the 20th century." This transcendence of the "unutterably dismal" (a phrase from Dangling Man) is achieved, if it can be achieved at all, through a "ferocious assimilation of learning" (Hitchens) and an emphasis on nobility. Relentlessness Of Life Instinct As The Source Of Inconsolability And Greed - Salman Akhtar

Still Life with Fruit and Wineglasses on a Silver Plate, c. 1659-1660, Willem Kalf. Courtesy Mauritshuis, The Hague.   Why do some people seem unable to achieve full satisfaction in things? What keeps them dissatisfied even after achieving their goals? And why does the Ego persist in avoiding mourning and sticking to the same solutions? In this episode of the IPA Talks On Psychoanalysis podcast series, Salman Akhtar presents his theory that redefines the classical Kleinian conception of the rupture between Gratification and Satisfaction as a consequence of the death instinct derived attack upon the provider of gratification. This should indeed lead us to the search for a state of tranquility rather than an increase in tension. What role does the Life Instinct, instead, play in this restless search, in this excessive intense refusal to believe that further gratification shall not result in satisfaction? This exploration not only offers a theoretical perspective but also has profound implications for clinical practice and our understanding of psychoanalytic technique. The episode we share with you today is sourced from the wealth of content presented at the 53rd IPA Congress in Cartagena. It was a part of the "Fanning the Flames" Panel, featuring Salman Akhtar, alongside Cordelia Schmidt-Hellerau, Claudia Antonelli, and moderated by Fred Busch. We are delighted to announce the opportunity to watch the complete panel, along with many other outstanding presentations from the Cartagena Congress, on the www.ipa.world website.   Salman Akhtar, MD is an internationally known psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, writer, and poet based in the United States. He has published 108 authored or edited books and given lectures and workshops in over 40 countries. Dr.Akhtar has served on the editorial boards of the three most important journals of our field, namely Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA), IJP, and The Psychoanalytic Quarterly PQ. His books have been translated in many languages and he has received numerous professional honors, including the highly prestigious Sigourney Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychoanalysis. Recently a 10-volume set of his Selected Papers was released at a festive ceremony at the Freud House& Museum in London. Dr. Akhtar has published 18 collections of poetry and serves as a Scholar-in-Residence at the Inter-Act Thater Company in Philadelphia.   A subtitled version of this podcast is available on our YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhxiwE76e0QaOquX3GujdwNLFsgxUQNXz&si=yf381EDu3pess6Yz

Stories emerge from the darkness… characters walk out of a mist… no map, no directions, just a candle and an invitation to muse. This is how Isabel Allende writes – with transcendence, vulnerability, and magic. In this wonderfully candid and soulful conversation, Isabel shares with us the heartbreaking story of how she lost her beloved daughter Paula, which inspired the book Paula. She also speaks about her sacred writing process, which can be a catharsis. She even shares with us an extraordinary perspective about life given to her by her grandmother. T. A. and Isabel share something truly special in this conversation. Not only a beautiful friendship, but a love of writing stories with the door cracked open to mystery. Stories of forgiveness, of starting again, of courage, compassion, and perseverance. Together they explore how to honor each person's story, how to listen to characters, and how to bring characters to life. About Isabel Allende: Isabel Allende—novelist, feminist, and philanthropist—is one of the most widely-read authors in the world, having sold more than 77 million books. Chilean born in Peru, Isabel won worldwide acclaim in 1982 with the publication of her first novel, The House of the Spirits, which began as a letter to her dying grandfather. Since then, she has authored more than twenty six bestselling and critically acclaimed books, including Daughter of Fortune, Island Beneath the Sea, Paula, The Japanese Lover, A Long Petal of the Sea and her most recent memoir, The Soul of a Woman. Translated into more than forty two languages, Allende's works entertain and educate readers by interweaving imaginative stories with significant historical events. In addition to her work as a writer, Allende devotes much of her time to human rights causes. In 1996, following the death of her daughter Paula, she established a charitable foundation in her honor, which has awarded grants to more than 100 nonprofits worldwide, delivering life-changing care to hundreds of thousands of women and girls. More than 8 million have watched her TED Talks on leading a passionate life. She has received fifteen honorary doctorates, including one from Harvard University, was inducted into the California Hall of Fame, received the PEN Center Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Anisfield-Wolf Lifetime Achievement Award. Health challenges can lead to a negative mindset and pessimistic outlook. In her new book, The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way to Chronic Health, award-winning social psychologist Ellen J. Langer challenges that mindset and lays out a compelling and practical alternative perspective based on her decades of research. Her theory of mind-body unity and her work on mindfulness, the practice of active noticing in day-to-day life, illuminate how to embrace a different approach that can have a significant impact on well-being. Ellen Langer joins us from Cambridge, Massachusetts. ________________________ Bio Ellen J. Langer is the author of eleven books, including the international bestseller Mindfulness, which has been translated into fifteen languages, and more than two hundred research articles. She is the recipient of, among other numerous awards and honors, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest from the American Psychological Association, the Award for Distinguished Contributions of Basic Science to the Application of Psychology from the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology, and the Adult Development and Aging Distinguished Research Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association. I didn't even know there were rules. I just did it. And so it was a mindful adventure. Anything can be engaged that way. If you're going to cook and stick religiously to the recipe, it's not nearly as much fun as, Oh my gosh, I don't have any sugar. That means I can't make it. Or what could I substitute it with? I don't have any cream. Should I use yogurt?  You don't have to be a genius in the kitchen. And part of it is just to go back to the way you and I claim to be, that you have to be lighthearted. You should take what you do seriously, but not take yourselves too seriously. So if I'm painting, why should I expect it to be a masterpiece? And so if I put aside the mindless evaluation, it's much easier to do it. And if you're cooking, if you don't believe this is the last meal you're ever going to eat or that everybody is going to evaluate you based on how good the meal is, then it's easy to play around. I actually believe that we should bring that playfulness to everything that we do." On Stress and Mind-Body Unity "I actually think stress is the major killer over and above genetics, diet - over and above everything. And stress is a psychological concept. Now, way back when, the medical world thought that Psychology was important maybe on how to be happy, who knows? But it had nothing to do with health. People don't believe that anymore. Now they know that there's a relationship between stress and health. I don't think anybody goes quite as far as I do. People talk about the Mind-Body connection. They're not connected. It's one thing. And that gives us far more control over our health." On Mindful Contagion "Now there's a simple understanding of mindful contagion.

Our guest today is the very generous and enthusiastic Steve Trout. Steve is a Professor of English at the University of Alabama - yes, the one in Tuscaloosa - where he recently stepped back from serving as Chair of that Department. Before moving to Tuscaloosa, he was Chair of the Department of English at the University of South Alabama, where he founded and co-directed the Center for the Study of War and Memory. Steve began his career at Fort Hayes State University in Kansas, serving as Chair of the Department of English and interim Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. He earned a BA and MA in English at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and then a PhD in Modern British Literature at the University of Kansas. Steve is a prolific scholar and has contributed to broadening the military history field. He is the author of three books: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Angel Fire: War, Remembrance, and an American Tragedy (University Press of Kansas), On the Battlefield of Memory: The First World War and American Remembrance, 1919-1941 (University of Alabama Press), and Memorial Fictions: Willa Cather and the First World War (University of Alabama). He has also edited four volumes, including Portraits of Remembrance: Painting, Memory, and the First World War, with Margaret Hutchingson (University of Alabama Press). He has published more than two dozen articles and essays, and he edits the War, Memory, and Culture series for the University of Alabama Press. Steve's many awards include the 2017 Mid-America Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Study of Midwestern Literature and the 2020 Southwest Book Award for The Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Angel Fire. We are thrilled to have Steve with us today - military history, war memory, crossing academic disciplines, and, of course, BBQ! Rec.: 08/19/2022
