'Animales difíciles' de Rosa Montero (Seix Barral) es la última entrega  de la serie del personaje Bruna Husky que nos lleva al año 2111. Un futuro aparentemente lejano pero en el que encontraremos algunos paralelismos con el mundo de hoy, es una novela espejo retrovisor de nuestro tiempo que cierra y se une a las otras tres anteriores `'Lágrimas en la lluvia' , 'El peso del corazón' y  'Los tiempos del odio'.  Rosa Montero, además de donarnos su serie, también nos dejó dos libros estupendos: 'Los desposeídos'  de Úrsula K. Leguin (Minotauro)  'Espejo roto' de Mercé Rodoreda (Austral). Nuestro bibliotecario Antonio Martínez Asensio nos trajo libros de papas y de guerra cultural: 'El manuscrito de sangre' de Luis García Jambrina (Espasa), 'Las sandalias del pescador' de Morris West (B de Bolsillo) y 'El duelo interminable: la batalla cultural del siglo XX' de José Enrique Ruiz Domenec (Taurus). También registró el libro que nos contará en su programa "Un libro, una hora",  'La casa de las bellas durmientes" de Yasunari Kawabata (Emecé) . El empleado Pepe Rubio nos trajo como novedades de la semana 'Vallesordo' de Jonathan Arribas (Libros del Asteroide) y  'El jardín del diablo' de Iván Repila (Seix Barral) . Pascual Donate encontró abandonado por la redacción de la SER y nos recomendó 'Etimologías para sobrevivir al caos' , un viaje al origen de 99 palabras. Escrito por Andrea Marcolongo y editado por (Taurus) . Y por último los oyentes nos donaron 'Mi planta de naranja lima' de José Mauro de Vasconcelos (Libros del Asteroide) , 'El año del pesamiento mágico' de Joan Didion (Random House) y 'Viaje al fin de la noche' de Louie-Ferdinand Celine (Edhasa)

Innovative Wave Energy Project Receives Green Light From EU

A €19.6 million partnership project, which aims to be the stepping stone towards large scale wave energy commercialisation, has received formal go-ahead from the European Union. WEDUSEA is a pioneering collaboration between 14 partners, spanning industry and academia from across the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Spain. It is co-ordinated by the Irish company OceanEnergy. The project is co-funded by the EU Horizon Europe Programme and by Innovate UK, the UK's innovation agency. In common with all other Horizon Europe projects, WEDUSEA has undergone a comprehensive independent review by EU appointed external experts following its initial project design period to ensure the technical designs and all plans, budgets and protocols are fully in place and approved. The green light has now been received from the EU and the project can proceed to its next stage. The WEDUSEA project will demonstrate a grid connected 1MW OE35 floating wave energy converter at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) wave energy test site at Billia Croo in Orkney, Scotland. A rigorous technical and environmental demonstration will happen over a two-year period in Atlantic wave conditions. OceanEnergy has developed the OE35, which is the world's largest capacity floating wave energy device. Floating on the ocean's surface, the device incorporates a trapped air volume, with the lower part open to the sea. Wave pressures at the submerged opening cause the water to oscillate and drive the trapped air through a turbine to generate electricity. Electricity generated will be exported to the UK grid via EMEC's subsea cables. Prof Tony Lewis, Chief Technical Officer at OceanEnergy, says: "Wave energy is the world's most valuable renewable resource with around 30TWh of potential annual production waiting to be harnessed. That's almost ten times Europe's annual electricity consumption. However, this potential has yet to be fully realised. The project will demonstrate that wave technology is on a cost reduction trajectory and will thus be a stepping stone to larger commercial array scale up and further industrialisation. We predict that the natural energy of the world's oceans will one day supply much of the grid." The WEDUSEA project has three phases. The first phase is the initial design and build of a device suited to the ocean conditions at EMEC's Billia Croo wave energy test site. This will be followed by the demonstration at the site, lasting two years. The final phase will be commercialisation and dissemination which sees the capitalisation and exploitation of the results. Matthijs Soede from the European Commission said at the start of the project: "WEDUSEA is set to be a major catalyst for the wave energy industry, unlocking the full potential of this exciting renewable technology. Prof Lars Johanning of University of Plymouth says: "The WEDUSEA partnership has worked hard to ensure that all detailed designs and planning are robust, to prove that the project is viable and that the project will be delivered within budget. Now we have received the green light from the EU, it's all systems go!" The wave converter build starts in the second half of 2024 and the demonstration at EMEC is expected to begin in June 2025. Catalina Infante Beovic (Buenos Aires, 1984)  es escritora, editora y magíster en Periodismo escrito.  ​        Ha escrito tres libros de relatos de pueblos originarios chilenos junto a la antropóloga y Premio Nacional de Ciencias Sociales, Sonia Montecino. Fue nominada en dos ocasiones a los Premio Altazor por su trabajo y uno de estos libros, Aventuras y orígenes de los pájaros, fue elegido entre la lista de honor del Ibby Internacional por la calidad de su escritura. ​       En 2014 publicó la nouvelle  La otra ciudad por Imbunche Ediciones, cuyos primeros cien ejemplares fueron impresos, encuadernados e ilustrados a mano. En 2015 publicó el libro álbum Dichos Redichos por Quilombo Ediciones, y en 2016 el libro objeto Postal Nocturna, un relato de solo cien ejemplares compuesto por un conjunto de postales ilustradas.                    En 2016 fue elegida por la revista Sábado de El Mercurio como una de las 100 jóvenes líderes del año. En 2017 fue columnista quincenal en Revista Paula, por quien recibió un premio MAGs de la Asociación nacional de la prensa a mejor columna femenina. En 2018 publicó su primer libro de cuentos Todas somos una misma sombra por Neón Ediciones y en 2020 el cuento Helechos por la misma editorial. Fue nominada a los The Pushcart Prize por este cuento en Estados Unidos, y en 2023 fue adaptado a cortometraje por la realizadora Paz Ramírez.    En 2023 publicó su primera novela La grieta, por Emecé. Actualmente imparte talleres literarios.

The Offshore Wind R&I Programme, delivered by the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), based in Orkney, and sponsored by the West of Orkney Windfarm, is exploring ways to overcome specific technical challenges in offshore wind and to embed the economic benefits in the north of Scotland. A series of innovation calls will address different challenge areas facing the West of Orkney Windfarm, spanning metocean, installation, logistics, and operations and maintenance (O&M). Last year, the West of Orkney Windfarm secured the rights to an area of seabed from Crown Estate Scotland to develop an offshore wind farm 30 km west of the Orkney Mainland and 25 km north of the Sutherland coast. Once complete, the multi-billion pound project will deliver enough electricity to power more than two million homes, alongside significant social and economic benefits to the north of Scotland. The R&I Programme will sponsor innovative projects to help the supply chain bring new solutions to market, build operational capacity and scale up activities. Successful applicants may also get support with developing a robust project proposal, accessing alternative grant funding and access to EMEC's world-leading test and demonstration sites. The first innovation call is now open and is looking for solutions that address at least one of the following challenges: •Understanding metocean conditions at and en route to the West of Orkney Windfarm site, to inform decision making on installation and O&M activities. •Design for short weather window installations to maximise opportunities for efficient installation. The innovation call will close at 1pm, Monday 12 February 2024. The West of Orkney Windfarm is funding the R&I Programme up to 1 million. A maximum of 300,000 is available for the first innovation call, however additional funding may be made available to those with the potential to have the biggest impact on the wind farm. Projects must provide a clear and justifiable benefit to the West of Orkney Windfarm and how they may also bring wider benefits across the offshore wind sector, supply chain, and economy in the region. Applications are encouraged from companies and research institutions in the local community and further afield, nationally and internationally. Dr Heather Turnbull, Offshore Wind R&I Programme project manager at EMEC, said: "Working with the West of Orkney Windfarm, we're aiming to accelerate innovation in the north of Scotland, reducing the time, cost and risk of offshore wind roll out, while enhancing supply chain capacity in the region. This programme aims to help businesses grow and create jobs, bringing skills, capabilities and economic benefit closer to wind farm projects. "The innovation calls have been designed to support companies explore ways to overcome the technical challenges facing offshore wind developments, giving them the tools needed to help build out offshore wind projects throughout Scotland, the UK and further afield. "We're also looking to bring in additional industry sponsors to broaden the remit of the programme to other offshore wind developments across the region." The search is on for The Earthshot Prize 2023 with the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) continuing its role as an Official Nominator for the second year running. EMEC joined The Earthshot Prize as an Official Nominator in 2022, following the Prince and Princess of Wales, then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, visiting EMEC to see the world-leading decarbonisation innovations taking place in Orkney. EMEC search for 2023 Earthshot champions EMEC is one of 349 nominators from 66 countries tasked with identifying breakthrough solutions that can solve the world's biggest environmental challenges. Earthshot is seeking innovations that will help repair and regenerate the planet. Assessment criteria is heavily weighted towards preventative solutions that address the source of the problem, providing an alternative approach from those that cause harm to the environment. This complements EMEC's vision of supporting the transition to a low-carbon future. With 2023 marking EMEC's 20th anniversary, EMEC is particularly interested in receiving applications from its clients, partners and alumni, as well as companies working in similar sectors such as offshore energy, green energy vectors and energy systems. All nominations should be well beyond idea stage but can have development requirements that need to be addressed before they are ready to scale their impact. Solutions should have the potential to be scaled and replicated to be relevant on a global level by 2030, making a significant or transformative impact on at least one of the Earthshot categories: protect and restore nature; clean our air; revive our oceans; build a waste-free world and fix our climate. The nomination process for The Earthshot Prize 2023 opened this week and EMEC has launched an open call inviting submissions for EMEC's consideration. Nominations can only be submitted to The Earthshot Prize by Official Nominators. EMEC will evaluate all applications against the Earthshot evaluation criteria and submit those most relevant. Ángela Pradelli nació en Buenos Aires, es escritora y profesora de Letras. Ejerció la docencia en escuelas secundarias por más de 30 años, la gran mayoría de ellas ubicadas en la zona sur del conurbano bonaerense. Se especializó en Gramática Española y dio conferencias y talleres para escritores en la Argentina y en varias ciudades de otros países, La Habana, Caracas, Berlín, Ginebra, Zúrich, Berna, Aarau, Wettingen, Zofingen, Winterthur. Tiene una obra vasta y diversa, es narradora, poeta y ensayista y ha recibido distintos premios, entre ellos: Premio Emecé, Premio Clarín, Premio Municipal de Novela y Ensayo, Premio al Mejor Libro de Educación. Publicó entre otros los libros: Amigas mías (Emecé, 2002), Turdera (Emecé, 2003), El lugar del padre, El sentido de la lectura (Paidós, 2013), En mi nombre. Historias de identidades restituidas (Paidós, 2014), El sol detrás del limonero (2016) y La respiración violenta del mundo (Emecé, 2017). Su obra fue traducida a diversas lenguas. Su novela La respiración violenta del mundo fue traducida al chino y recibió el Premio a las Mejores Novelas Extranjeras del Siglo XXI, otorgado por People's Literature Press de China. Pradelli acaba de publicar en editorial Emecé su nuevo libro, Dos soldados, un trabajo conmovedor en el que reúne los testimonios de Pietro Freschi, un italiano ya fallecido que combatió en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y de Héctor Roldán, un argentino ex combatiente de Malvinas. Aunque son distantes los conflictos y también las vidas de sus protagonistas, a partir de su trabajo Pradelli consigue unir las experiencias de los testigos de momentos clave de la historia y algo más trascendente aún, logra con su relato que cada lector, además de adentrarse en historias profundamente conmovedoras, vuelva a pensar en conceptos como guerra, hambre, frío, trauma, violencia y poder y se permita reflexionar sobre una deuda social enorme: la ingratitud hacia los ex combatientes. En la sección Libros que sí, Hinde recomendó “Íntima distancia”, de Alejandra Zina (Dábale arroz) y “¿Se puede separar la obra del autor? Censura, cancelación y derecho al error”, de Giselle Sapiro (Capital Intelectual) y en Bienvenidos habló de “Limítrofe, Relatos continentales, de varios autores “ (Libros de UNAHUR), prólogo de Julián López y “El mar suena de fondo”, de Ana Katz, (Alción) En Voz alta, el poeta, periodista y compositor Pipo Lernoud leyó los Seis consejos de escritura de John Steinbeck. Pipo acaba de publicar el libro de poemas "Mi cara en el espejo" por la editorial Cae de maduro. Y en Mesita de luz nos contó que libros está leyendo el escritor boliviano Maximiliano Barrientos, que acaba de publicar por Caja Negra el libro “Miles de ojos”.

Enriquez has published the novels: Bajar es lo peor (Espasa Calpe, 1995), Cómo desaparecer completamente (Emecé, 2004) and Nuestra parte de noche (Anagrama, 2019)(Herralde Prize 2019). She has also written the short story books: Los peligros de fumar en la cama (Emecé, 2009), Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego (Editorial Anagrama, 2016) (Premi Ciutat de Barcelona 2017)  and the novelette Chicos que vuelven (Eduvim, 2010). Mesmo com avanço do ensino da cultura afro, temos muito o que fazer para transformar a sociedade em um lugar mais justo e menos desigual. Eduardo Gudiño Kieffer (Esperanza, 2 de noviembre de 1935 - Buenos Aires, 20 de septiembre de 2002), fue un escritor y periodista argentino, hijo de maestros y descendiente de una de las familias fundadoras de Esperanza (Santa Fe), estudió en el Liceo Militar de Santa Fe y Derecho en la Universidad Nacional del Litoral. En 1965, recibió la beca Stage en la ORTF, (París) otorgada por el gobierno francés. En 1967, la distinción fue del Fondo Nacional de las Artes, también con una beca. Vivió en París —donde fue amigo de Julio Cortázar y Nicolás García Uriburu— y se estableció en Buenos Aires a fines de los años 60. Su trayectoria incluye los premios: Affinités por cuento, 1957. Faja de Honor de la S.A.D.E. (Sociedad Argentina de Escritores) Pluma de Plata del PEN Club. Premio Konex - Diploma al Mérito 1984. Premio Literario del Instituto Griego de Cultura, 1988 - Club de los 13, Sigfrido Radaelli, 1998. Primer Premio Municipal de Novela, 1998. Premio Esteban Echeverría, 1999, entre muchos otros. En 1993 fue director del Fondo Nacional de las Artes. Traductor del francés al español. Ejerció la actividad publicitaria y periodística, fue un importante colaborador de los diarios y revistas más importantes del país: La Nación, La Prensa, Editorial Abril, Editorial Atlántida y muchos más publicaron sus artículos. Fue un escritor muy convocado como jurado de diferentes premios (Planeta, Konex, La Nación, Emecé, Nacional de la República Argentina, Municipal de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, y otros). Participó en conferencias y congresos literarios en distintos países. Muchas de sus obras fueron traducidas a diversos idiomas (inglés, francés, griego, italiano, húngaro y otros). En agosto del 2001, la Legislatura de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires lo distinguió como Ciudadano Ilustre. Se postuló en las elecciones de 1987 como segundo candidato a diputado nacional y en 1989 como candidato a diputado por el partido Demócrata Progresista. Juan Forn (Buenos Aires, 5 de noviembre de 1959-Mar de las Pampas, 20 de junio de 2021)1​ fue un escritor, periodista, editor, traductor y asesor literario argentino. Su abuela, nacida en Gran Bretaña, y un vecino que durante su adolescencia le prestaba libros en inglés, determinaron su anglofilia. Los autores que tradujo fueron siempre de este idioma. Cursó sus estudios en el Colegio Cardenal Newman. El primer libro que publicó fue uno de poesía, en 1979, pero pronto se convenció que ese no era su género. Viajó a Europa y de regreso comenzó a trabajar en 1980 como editor, primero en Emecé y después Planeta hasta 1995. En 1994 fue invitado por el Woodrow Wilson International Center (Washington D. C.) para terminar su novela Frivolidad, que fue publicada en 1995. Posteriormente publicó Puras mentiras. En 1996 creó el suplemento cultural Radar Libros del diario argentino Página/12, que dirigió hasta 2002. Ese año, un coma pancreático lo tuvo al borde de la muerte. Los médicos le advirtieron que debía parar su intenso ritmo de vida, y se fue a vivir a Villa Gesell, localidad costera a 300 kilómetros de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, donde residió el resto de su vida. Tuvo, desde 2008, una columna semanal, que aparecía los viernes en la contratapa de Página/12. Editó cuatro libros con las crónicas que allí publicó. Tuvo otra sección —La tierra elegida— en la revista literaria colombiana El Malpensante. En 2001 Página/12 editó cinco libros de Forn en formato económico. En 2007 obtuvo el Premio Konex de Platino en la disciplina Periodismo Literario, otorgado por la Fundación Konex, y en 2017 el Diploma al Mérito del mismo premio. En 2015 editó Los Viernes, una selección de sus contratapas en Página/12. En 2018 fue uno de los entrevistados en el filme documental “La boya” dirigido por Fernando Spiner. Escribió novelas como Corazones, Frivolidad, Puras mentiras y María Domecq. Cuentos como Nadar de noche En 1996 creó el suplemento cultural Radar Libros del diario argentino Página/12. Tamara Tenenbaum es una de las voces más potentes de su generación en la literatura y en el mundo de las ideas y el pensamiento. Periodista y escritora, nació en 1989 y estudió Filosofía en la UBA, donde ejerce como docente, tarea que también desempeña en la IUNA. Periodista cultural en todos los soportes y muy activa en las redes sociales, publicó en 2017 su libro de poemas Reconocimiento de terreno y en 2018 ganó el premio Ficciones del Ministerio de Cultura al mejor libro de cuentos inéditos, que se convirtió tiempo después en su libro Nadie vive tan cerca de nadie. En 2019, su ensayo El fin del amor. Querer y coger en el siglo XXI sorprendió como un gran éxito de crítica y ventas y está siendo llevado al mundo audiovisual en formato serie, con Lali Espósito como protagonista. Tamara es la mayor de tres hermanas, tenía 5 años cuando murió su padre en el atentado a la AMIA, un episodio que dice no recordar. Emecé acaba de publicar Todas nuestras maldiciones se cumplieron, una novela en la que Tamara recupera su propia historia como niña nacida y educada por una madre médica, viuda y joven en la comunidad ortodoxa judía del barrio del Once y, también, la vida que nace con su llegada al mundo laico porteño, ya durante la escuela secundaria, luego de su ruptura con la religión y la comunidad. “Lo que sé de mi papá es más lo que me contaron que lo que yo vi”, dijo hace poco en una entrevista, en la que también señaló, a propósito de su nuevo libro, que le interesaba “contar cómo es crecer con una muerte que uno no presenció y todos los demás sí”. La novela trabaja los materiales biográficos con distancia y sin ninguna connotación militante salvo una: escribir literatura. En la sección Libros que si Hinde recomendó “Autobiografía de mi madre”, de Jamaica Kincaid (La parte maldita, traducción de Inés Garland), “Claudia vuelve”, de Julián Gorodischer (Marea) y “La ola que lee, de César Aira. Artículos y reseñas 1981-2010” Literatura Random House) y en El Extranjero comentó “Azúcar quemado”, de Avni Doshi (Temas de Hoy/Edicions de 1984) En la sección Mesita de luz la periodista cultural Verónica Abdala comentó que libros está leyendo y en Voz alta, Julián Gorodischer leyó un fragmento de “Un hombre sin patria”, de Kurt Vonnegut editado por Compañía Naviera Ilimitada.

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) has unveiled an end-to-end hydrogen refuelling solution supporting ZeroAvia’s hydrogen-powered test flight programme in Cranfield. The hydrogen refuelling solution, delivered by EMEC in conjunction with subcontractor Fuel Cell Systems Limited (FCSL), is a mobile solution consisting of a re-deployable modular electrolyser, trailer mounted air compressor and a first of its kind ADR-certified 350 bar refuelling truck. Delivery of the refuelling solution is a key milestone in the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and Innovate UK funded HyFlyer project. EMEC: Hydrogen refuelling system The three-part refuelling system uses the electrolyser for the on-site generation of hydrogen gas which is compressed and stored onboard the refuelling truck. The hydrogen can then be used to fuel an aircraft, in this case fuelling ZeroAvia’s Piper M-Class aircraft. Storing up to 55 kg of hydrogen, the refuelling truck can support multiple daily flights within the HyFlyer test programme. Having successfully gained ADR certification, a specialist test for vehicles carrying hazardous goods in bulk, the refuelling truck can now legally carry hydrogen on the roads, making it the first mobile refuelling solution of its kind available in Europe. The system is currently being used by ZeroAvia at its R&D base at Cranfield Airport where it recently carried out the world’s first hydrogen-electric flight of a commercial scale aircraft. ZeroAvia is now working on the next phase of the aircraft’s technology integration and testing programme using the mobile refuelling solution to support a 250-300 nautical mile A – B demonstration flight, expected to be the longest hydrogen-powered flight on record. Neil Kermode, Managing Director at EMEC, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting ZeroAvia’s test flight programme and developing EMEC’s hydrogen capabilities. Operating as a mobile 350 bar hydrogen refuelling solution, the HyFlyer truck can provide hydrogen fuelling service to locations with no existing or fixed hydrogen infrastructure which is enabling the solution to be used in an airport setting. “We found that there was no standard for hydrogen refuelling in an aviation setting so the mobile solution has been developed in accordance with the automotive J2601 hydrogen refuelling standards while being bespoke to best fit the project needs.” Tom Chicken, Chief Technical Officer at FCSL, said: “Achieving ADR certification, so that the truck can transport hydrogen legally on the roads, is a huge step forward to facilitate hydrogen-fuelled transport and is a first for Europe. We are delighted to have been involved in the HyFlyer project and look forward to continuing to provide our hydrogen refuelling services to the transport sector.” Val Miftakhov, CEO of ZeroAvia said: “ZeroAvia expects to deliver zero emissions hydrogen-electric aviation ready for passengers by 2023. We are continuing to develop and test our Piper M class model, which will be scaled up for larger aircraft and longer distance travel. “As hydrogen-electric aircraft enter service, the hydrogen refuelling solution developed within the HyFlyer project demonstrates the refuelling possibilities which airports and airlines will need to consider, to accelerate their own transition to sustainable flight.” The HyFlyer project is led by ZeroAvia with project partners the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) and Intelligent Energy. The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), Orkney, Scotland will deploy an Invinity Energy System (AIM: IES) 1.8 MWh flow battery at EMEC’s tidal energy test site on the island of Eday. This unique combination of tidal power and flow batteries will be used to power EMEC’s hydrogen production plant, demonstrating continuous hydrogen production from variable renewable generation. EMECs production of hydrogen The commercialisation of green hydrogen is an essential step toward a 100% renewable future. Green hydrogen is created and consumed without carbon emissions and can replace fossil fuels in the energy mix, supporting the decarbonisation of heavy industry and transport sectors. The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult estimate that developing a green hydrogen industry could create 120,000 jobs and deliver £320 bn to the UK economy by 2050. Funded by the Scottish Government, via Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Invinity’s modular flow battery system will be assembled at the company’s manufacturing facility in Bathgate, West Lothian, and consist of eight Invinity VS3 battery modules linked together into a single system. The project is expected to go live next year. Scotland’s Energy Minister, Paul Wheelhouse, said: “We are delighted to support this world-first innovative energy systems project in Orkney, with £1.8 million of funding from the Scottish Government. The demonstration of hydrogen and systems integration with renewables will be a key part of our energy transition pathways and we look forward to watching the progress of this exciting and pioneering project, building on the strong track record of Orkney and EMEC, in particular, in demonstrating hydrogen and integrated energy systems.” Invinity’s vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) are a form of heavy-duty, stationary energy storage that are deployed in high-utilisation, industrial applications. They provide hours of continuous power, one or more times per day, through decades of service. This makes them the perfect candidate for regulating the generation of tidal energy, an application where more conventional lithium-ion batteries would degrade and eventually wear out. Tidal generation is predictable yet variable, with two high and two low tides occurring each day. This is an extremely heavy cycling application, requiring up to four cycles per day, compared to solar coupled energy storage projects which typically require just one charge and discharge each day. At EMEC’s site, the system will store electricity generated by tidal turbines during high power periods, and discharge it during low power periods. This will ‘smooth’ tidal generation to create continuous, on-demand electricity to turn into hydrogen using EMEC’s 670 kW hydrogen electrolyser. This will optimise hydrogen production at the site to enable tonnes of green hydrogen generation each year. Neil Kermode, Managing Director at EMEC, said: “EMEC’s core purpose is to demonstrate technologies in new and inspired ways to decarbonise our energy system. This is the first time that a flow battery will have been coupled with tidal energy and hydrogen production, and will support the development of the innovative energy storage solution being developed in the Interreg NWE ITEG project. “Following a technical review looking at how to improve the efficiencies of the electrolyser we assessed that flow batteries would be the best fit for the energy system. As flow batteries store electrical charge in a liquid rather than a solid, they can provide industrial quantities of power for a sustained period, can deeply discharge without damaging itself, as well as stand fully charged for extended periods without losing charge. Fernanda García Lao (Mendoza, Argentina 6 oct 1966) fue seleccionada por la Feria Internacional de Libro de Guadalajara 2011 como uno de “los secretos mejor guardados de la literatura latinoamericana”. Vivió en España desde 1976 hasta 1993. Es escritora, dramaturga y poeta. Publicó las novelas Muerta de hambre (Primer Premio del Fondo Nacional de las Artes, Editorial El Cuenco de Plata, 2005), La perfecta otra cosa (El Cuenco de Plata, 2007), La piel dura (El Cuenco de Plata, 2011), Vagabundas (Editorial El Ateneo, 2011), Fuera de la jaula (Editorial Emecé) y Nación vacuna (Emecé, 2017)a los que se suman varios libros de cuentos, relatos, y poesía. En 2015 publicó Amor invertido (Seix Barral, 2015) y Los que vienen de la noche (Seix Barral, 2018), ambos en coautoría con Guillermo Saccomanno. Ha colaborado en distintas publicaciones a ambos lados del océano (Babelia, Revista Quimera, Letras Libres, El Buensalvaje, Las/12, Revista Ñ). Esa esfera de dos a tres centímetros de diámetro entre los escalones de un sótano de una vieja casa en la calle Garay trascendió a ser un objeto de culto y una metáfora de la literatura misma, de una infinita biblioteca. En ese espejo y centro de todas las cosas, en el cual todo concluye y se refleja, a la vez, y sin superposición, no deja de recordar a la Divina Comedia de Dante en ese descender que Borges, autor y personaje, emprende después de la candente mañana de febrero en la que su Beatrice fallece.

Philosophy in small coinsSome years before, in his essay Les Assassins de la Mémoire —an acute study on the neo-nazi revisionism in contemporary Europe—, the French writer Pierre Vidal-Naquet transcribed lyrics of “Cambalache”, the seminal tango by Enrique Santos Discépolo. A far-fetched quotation? Maybe a feature of exotism by an intellectual in search of oxygen out of the European culture environment? According to the author´s confession, he was acquainted with Discépolo´s work by way of some Latin American friends. And he decided to include him in a book not at all connected with tango. The image of a cambalache (second-hand shop) as scenery for insolent random, of a confusion of values and desacralization seemed to him most adequate to seal his denouncing text.That was not the first time which Discépolo´s work aroused interest in the field of thought. The Spaniard Camilo José Cela included him among his preferred popular poets and Ernesto Sábato had no doubt in identifying himself with the pessimistic philosophy of the one who wrote “Qué vachaché”: «True love got drowned in the soup». Several years before these recognitions, the lunfardo (slang) poets Dante Linyera and Carlos de la Púa defined Discépolo as an author with philosophy. Another writer from Buenos Aires, Julián Centeya, when reviewing one of his films, talked of «philosophy in small coins», and at the same time was risking an analogy —undoubtedly exaggerated— between Discépolo and... Charlie Chaplin.Unlike other popular creators who displayed their talent in an instinctive and somewhat naïve way to be later recognized as future exegetes, Discépolo was always conscious of his contribution. It could also be stated that all his artistic renderings were articulated by common sense, a certain Discepolian air or spirit which people immediately recognizes with affection and admiration as if his work —more than once defined as prophetic— should express the common sense of the Argentines. Discépolo´s singularity keeps on disquieting either in the tango universe or outside it. While most of his contemporaries are today strange to new generations, the man who wrote and composed “Cambalache” persists, is in force. Or to say it with one of his most loved images: he keeps on biting.Enrique grew up seeing theater guided by his brother Armando, the great playwright of the River Plate grotesque, and soon later he was attracted by popular arts. He arrived at tango after having tried with uneven success, play writing and acting. In 1917, he made his début as an actor, in the company of Roberto Casaux, a comic star of that time, and a year later he wrote together with a friend the play Los Duendes, mistreated by critics. He later improved his level with El Señor Cura (adaptation of a Maupassant´s story), Día Feriado, El Hombre Solo, Páselo Cabo and, especially, El Organito, fierce social painting sketched with his brother in the mid-20s. As an actor, Discépolo evolved from chorus member to a cast name, and his work in Mustafá, would be remembered, among many other renditions.Although the worlds of tango and theater were not divorced in the Argentina of Yrigoyen and Gardel, Discépolo´s decision to be an author of popular songs was resisted by his elder brother —Armando had been responsible for Enrique´s education after the early death of their parents—, and it cannot be said that things had been easy for the feeble and shy Discepolín. A mild familiar influence (Santo, his father, was a noted Neapolitan musician settled in Buenos Aires) may have been the first evidence towards the combined art of sound organization and lyrics, but the revelation was not immediate. On the contrary, either the anodyne “Bizcochito”, his first composition commissioned by the playwright Saldías, or the remarkable and revulsive “Qué vachaché”, published by Julio Korn in 1926 and premiered at a theater in Montevideo where it was noisily whistled, were a bad start or, at least, that was what people in Buenos Aires, used to appraise Manuel Romero's, Celedonio Flores' and Pascual Contursi's tangos, thought.The luck of the stubborn author changed in 1928 when, in a revue, the singer Azucena Maizani sang “Esta noche me emborracho”, a tango with Horatian touches (because of Horacio, author of Odes) and with an entirely River Plate subject: an old cabaret woman who was mercilessly treated by time. Days after its début, the lyrics of that tango were heard throughout the country. Argentine musicians on tour of Europe included it in their repertories, and in Alfonso XIII´s Spain, the composition achieved an enormous popularity. That was Discépolo birth in tango. That very year, the actress and singer Tita Merello returned to the previously critized “Qué vachaché” and drove it to the same stature of “Esta noche me emborracho”. Finally, 1928 would be the year of love for an intellectual full of uncertainties. Tania, a Spanish singer of cuplés settled in Buenos Aires, who would turn out to be an adequate interpreter of his tangos, was to accompany Discépolo until the end of his life.At a time when lyric writing and musical composition were clearly differentiated within the frame of cultural industries, Discépolo wrote lyrics and music, even though the latter was conceived with just two fingers on the piano keyboard, to be later committed to staff sheet by some friend musicians (generally Lalo Scalise). This twofold capacity allowed Discépolo to develop each tango as a perfect unit of lyrics and music. With an extremely sharp sense of rhythm and dramatic progression, with an impeccable melodic sense (Carlos de la Púa defined him as a Philharmonic Tom Thumb), Discépolo managed to make of his short and, most times, violent stories, an authentic River Plate human comedy. He set aside a big portion of the modernist influence which viciated other lyricists (Rubén Darío was the literary hero for hundred of Argentine poets, for many years) and translated to the minor format of song, certain predominant ideas of the age: theatrical grotesque, Croce´s idealism, Pirandellian estrangement...The profusion of ideas in each lyric found in the witty humor and in the lyricism of music, a certain balance, a sensory compensation, a way to tell things in and through tango. No other author would go so far.Of course, the fact that Carlos Gardel had recorded almost all his early tangos greatly helped to divulge and legitimate Discépolo as author and composer in a genre plenty of authors and composers. In this sense, Gardel´s rendition of “Yira yira” in October 1930 stands amongst the great numbers of Argentine music. The intensity of the recording, where there were not special theatrical resources and the singer avoided all unnecessary emphasis, is given by the immediacy of Gardel´s expression. There are no instrumental preambles to make the listener familiar with the material beyond a brief introduction by the guitarists who present the bridge with tremolos and phrasings in the low strings so typical of the period. The melodic line, with deceptive simplicity suddenly breaks in, with a force which excludes complaint.“Yira yira” was listened to and interpreted as a claim loaded with skepticism. The ridiculed militant in “Qué vachaché” comes back to assault, but this time he is backed by a profound material crisis. Now the conceited one, who resisted to believe that «true love got drowned in the soup», is taking the place of a cynical voice. The principles have been changed by reality. This is the triumph of disbelief but now without the cynicism —and even less the grotesque— of some years before. The character of “Yira yira” trusted the world but the world failed him. Such as in other Discépolo´s tangos, the lyrics tell us of a fall, a cruel sunrise: there is no more space for deceipt and fraud. (From this perspective, those who saw in Discépolo a moralist disappointed by modernity are not completely mistaken, but perhaps he is much more than that).The trend that begins with “Qué vachaché” and ripens in “Yira yira” is continued in the tangos “Qué sapa señor” and, in 1935, “Cambalache”. But this is not the only style of the compositional art of Discépolo. He was romantic in the waltz “Sueño de juventud”, mocking in comic tangos such as “Justo el 31” and “Chorra”, expressionist in “Soy un arlequín” and “Quién más quién menos”, passionate in “Confesión” and “Canción desesperada” and somewhat nostalgic and elegiac in “Uno” and “Cafetín de Buenos Aires”, both written together with Mariano Mores. He was not as prolific as Enrique Cadícamo, and a portion of his work lacks in interest. Undoubtedly, Discépolo's musical variety had to do with his interest in theater and cinema. His staging of Wunder Bar and his most known movies —Cuatro Corazones,En la Luz de una Estrella— made known several songs —some almost forgotten— which the director and actor wrote with his programmatic sense.Enrique Santos Discépolo was born in the neighborhood of Once, Buenos Aires, and died at his downtown apartment which he shared with Tania. His commitment with Peronism, made public through his brief and shocking participation in a controverted radio program, caused a troublesome distance between him and his old friends. Two years after his death, when the political trenches no longer needed him but several of his tangos kept on striking on the collective consciousness, Discépolo was remembered by the writer Nicolás Olivari on a remarkable article. There Olivari asserted that “Yira yira”'s author had been the bolt of Buenos Aires humorism, smeared with grease for anguish. In a way, that was a Discepolian definition.Sergio A. He set aside a big portion of the modernist influence which viciated other lyricists (Rubén Darío was the literary hero for hundred of Argentine poets, for many years) and translated to the minor format of song, certain predominant ideas of the age: theatrical grotesque, Croce´s idealism, Pirandellian estrangement...The profusion of ideas in each lyric found in the witty humor and in the lyricism of music, a certain balance, a sensory compensation, a way to tell things in and through tango. No other author would go so far.Of course, the fact that Carlos Gardel had recorded almost all his early tangos greatly helped to divulge and legitimate Discépolo as author and composer in a genre plenty of authors and composers. In this sense, Gardel´s rendition of “Yira yira” in October 1930 stands amongst the great numbers of Argentine music. The intensity of the recording, where there were not special theatrical resources and the singer avoided all unnecessary emphasis, is given by the immediacy of Gardel´s expression. There are no instrumental preambles to make the listener familiar with the material beyond a brief introduction by the guitarists who present the bridge with tremolos and phrasings in the low strings so typical of the period. The melodic line, with deceptive simplicity suddenly breaks in, with a force which excludes complaint.“Yira yira” was listened to and interpreted as a claim loaded with skepticism. The ridiculed militant in “Qué vachaché” comes back to assault, but this time he is backed by a profound material crisis. Now the conceited one, who resisted to believe that «true love got drowned in the soup», is taking the place of a cynical voice. The principles have been changed by reality. This is the triumph of disbelief but now without the cynicism —and even less the grotesque— of some years before. The character of “Yira yira” trusted the world but the world failed him. Such as in other Discépolo´s tangos, the lyrics tell us of a fall, a cruel sunrise: there is no more space for deceipt and fraud. (From this perspective, those who saw in Discépolo a moralist disappointed by modernity are not completely mistaken, but perhaps he is much more than that).The trend that begins with “Qué vachaché” and ripens in “Yira yira” is continued in the tangos “Qué sapa señor” and, in 1935, “Cambalache”. But this is not the only style of the compositional art of Discépolo. He was romantic in the waltz “Sueño de juventud”, mocking in comic tangos such as “Justo el 31” and “Chorra”, expressionist in “Soy un arlequín” and “Quién más quién menos”, passionate in “Confesión” and “Canción desesperada” and somewhat nostalgic and elegiac in “Uno” and “Cafetín de Buenos Aires”, both written together with Mariano Mores. He was not as prolific as Enrique Cadícamo, and a portion of his work lacks in interest. Undoubtedly, Discépolo's musical variety had to do with his interest in theater and cinema. His staging of Wunder Bar and his most known movies —Cuatro Corazones,En la Luz de una Estrella— made known several songs —some almost forgotten— which the director and actor wrote with his programmatic sense.Enrique Santos Discépolo was born in the neighborhood of Once, Buenos Aires, and died at his downtown apartment which he shared with Tania. His commitment with Peronism, made public through his brief and shocking participation in a controverted radio program, caused a troublesome distance between him and his old friends. Two years after his death, when the political trenches no longer needed him but several of his tangos kept on striking on the collective consciousness, Discépolo was remembered by the writer Nicolás Olivari on a remarkable article. There Olivari asserted that “Yira yira”'s author had been the bolt of Buenos Aires humorism, smeared with grease for anguish. In a way, that was a Discepolian definition.Sergio A.
