September 30, 1765. Almost a decade before the American Revolution, delegates from four colonies gather in the first, unofficial meeting of the Stamp Act Congress. The congress has been called to respond to a new British tax on the colonies, the Stamp Act. It’s essentially a tax on paper, and Congress’ response will be the first official act of dissension by the colonies against the British. Unofficially though, the people are rioting in the streets. And it’s this popular protest, more than Congress’ tempered response, that will bring the Stamp Act down. How did the Stamp Act riots become a spark that would ignite the American Revolution? And what does it mean that we’ve been protesting for change since before America’s founding?Special thanks to our guest, Dr. Christopher R. It’s late on the East Coast, semi late here in Minnesota and the College Football Playoff game is still going on as I sit down and blast out this episode. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from in and around the sport of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant, and since there were no scores tonight, the show is about the “more,” today. Back home from Virginia and the 40th annual Virginia Duals. I’ve been to 24 and that tournament holds a special place in my heart. One of the more heart-wrenching moments came in the ODU-Virginia dual where Killian Cardinale, the starter for ODU, which as you know, is my alma mater, wrestled Patrick McCormick, a four-time state champion from my hometown of Poquoson and the son of one of my good friends, NCAA wrestling official Mike McCormick. I once had a similar instance where Bryan LaShomb of ODU wrestled Anthony Burke of UVA in a dual meet. That time, I was announcing. Burke was in my sister’s graduating class back in 2004, and I’d known him since he was in middle school. With Patch, who I gave a little local shout out to at the Midlands, I’d known him since birth. It’s one of those cool things that when you go to the Virginia Duals and see that type of matchup with both ODU and UVA coming from where they were about 15 years ago, it’s cool. Almost all those Virginia college teams are better than they were 15 years ago. Obviously Virginia Tech has carried the flag and George Mason will be improving under Frank Beasley. Now the Commonwealth added two Division III schools last week with Roanoke College and Emory & Henry. Let’s hope we aren’t adding too many teams, too fast, though. Strategery, right?  In Duals: In case you missed it, we had a number of dual events that went on this past weekend. In Williamsport, Pennsylvania, The College of New Jersey won the 20th annual Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College. In Hampton, Virginia, Rider won the National College Division, beating No. 22 Virginia, while Division II Kutztown downed Division III Ferrum in the finals for the second straight year.  In Louisville, at the 2020 U.S. Marine Corps NWCA Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships presented by ARMS Software and Defense Soap hosted by NUWAY … St. Cloud State, Wartburg, Grand View, Nassau, McKendree and Menlo were all winners in their respective divisions. St. Cloud State extended its D2 win streak to 58 and won its fourth in a row. Wartburg won its 12th overall title and beat three national champions in their win over Augsburg in the final in Division III. Grand View’s win streak is now 85 after they lost three individual bouts in four duals to capture a ninth-straight title. The NJCAA featured eight non-scholarship teams, which was won by Nassau. It was Nassau’s third title but first since 2005. The women’s division split this year into NCAA and NAIA divisions. McKendree beat Simon Fraser on criteria in the NCAA Division, while Menlo beat Campbellsville to win the NAIA crown. By the way, while Sara Koenig, one of the tournament directors for the Super 32 awesomely pointed out the last time UNC women’s field hockey lost in response to TV pimping Clemson’s 742 days without a loss. Well, the Heels last lost 787 days ago. St. Cloud State last lost 1,094 days ago and Grand View’s last loss was 2,258 days ago.  You noticed I said non-scholarship with the NJCAA portion of the National Duals. You’d be quite punctilious in assuming that, well in Miami, Oklahoma, Clackamas won the NJCAA Coaches Duals by beating Iowa Western 38-15 in the finals. This was basically a national duals for the scholarship division. Clackamas beat Iowa Lakes, top-ranked but fourth-seeded Western Wyoming, Colby and Iowa Western on the weekend. Iowa Central beat host Northeastern Oklahoma A&M for third.  Notables on the Docket: Division II Ohio Valley is at Division III Muskingum, while we’ve got another split dual as Division III Muhlenberg will face Division II East Stroudsburg.  An allotment of matches involving NAIA schools on Tuesday. Central Baptist will head to Calumet College of St. Joseph – that’s in Indiana if you’re wondering – Ancilla of the NJCAA will also join the fun. Thomas More is at Midway, Lincoln continues its maiden voyage into the NAIA with a dual at Missouri Baptist. Fact: Missouri Baptist head coach Brian Jackson was a three-time All-American in three different divisions. Bluefield wrestles Southwest Virginia in Richlands, Virginia, while Benedictine (Kan.) will take on William Penn. NAIA Central Christian will face Cloud County in Concordia, Kansas.  And that’s all I’ve got at the time being. Coker and Newberry were postponed until next month.  FROM THE DWN: I brought my newspaper background into wrestling more than 20 years ago. One of those things I used to feature back on InterMat was the weekly “How the Top 25 fared.” It was something that ran on the agate wire on Sunday nights for the Monday paper and the Top 25 AP poll release. I just brought it back, mainly as an aide for the coaches poll. Figured if I’m doing it, I might has well post it.  Despite Duke’s tough season thus far, there is at least some news coming out of Durham. Former wrestling SID Meredeith Rieder features Mason Eaglin, a freshman from Port Orchard, Washington – the same hometown as three-time All-American Conner Hartmann. With five of the six ACC teams ranked, maybe Duke can finally reward its wrestlers with some scholarship opportunities. Minnesota recaps the return of The Beast Brock Lesnar. The past NCAA champion returned to Minneapolis on Friday as part of the 20th anniversary of his individual title. The Gophers beat Wisconsin, who would later beat Nebraska. USA Wrestling announced it would be holding wrestle-offs for the Pan American Olympic qualifiers in women’s freestyle during the WCWA championships next month in Georgia – the state, not the country. Now this is what’s going to make things interesting – when will they announce the wrestle-offs for the other styles. And yes, you know I mean men’s freestyle. Credit on that to Bloodround.  Campbell’s Jason Williams, a vet in the world of Sports Information, writes up a pretty solid feature on the Camels’ 2-1 weekend in Arizona in a quad at Chase Field in Phoenix. The Camel that is Campbell’s mascot is named Gaylord – after famous alum Gaylord Perry. Among the stories from the local news, I’ll key in on The Winchester Star’s feature of Sherando High School senior Colton Foltz. Same high school as Virginia Tech heavyweight John Borst, which is cool. Coached by Brian Kibler, who wrestled at Strasburg, which according to Earl Smith of The Open Mat, isn’t cool. Let’s remember, Earl went to Manassas Park. Yes, let the hate flow! Anyway, little local Q&A.  On The Network The newest show to the network, Forward, has been released. Why Being Autistic Prevented Me From Knowing I'm Gay

High functioning autism explains most of my life. From the time I was young, I always felt a bit disconnected from others. As a young kid, I was homeschooled and did unaware of high functioning autism altogether. My parents and peers never had any suspicion I was on the autism spectrum. Most of my days were spent fairly disconnected from the world... I would spend hours and hours in my basement playing World of Warcraft, Age of Empires, Empire Earth, Warcraft 3, Halo 2, or whatever other video games I was currently obsessed with playing. High functioning autism did not really show it's face until I got married, joined the Army, and moved away from home. I attended college first at Howard Community College (still living at home) and then transferred to Lycoming College in PA where I completed Army ROTC. Lycoming College is an extremely small College with about 1400 students total. Honestly, the reason I chose to attend such a small college was because I felt overwhelmed by the noise and environment at the larger Universities I had visited. In hindsight, this is one of those situations where high functioning autism certainly reared it's head a bit to influence my decision making process. High functioning autism is sneaky because it hides in plain side. Again, in hindsight, I see very clearly where I was somewhat at the whims of the disorder without realizing what was happening. At college, I was a total loner. I avoided people because it felt a bit overwhelming. I hated going to parties because it was too loud and I always felt really awkward. Mostly, I stayed in the library at the same computers every day working on homework or browsing the internet. I loved martial arts... I still do! Actually, for a side note, here's a post on my martial arts journey and how it influenced my personal development: https://beyondhomosapien.com/personal... High functioning autism did not really effect my life until I got married. You see, I had been doing Army ROTC during my time at Lycoming College and had commissioned as an officer in the US Army Military Police Corps. I was going to be stationed in Germany for three years. At this time, my girlfriend and I decided to get married so she could come. After all, she was my absolute best friend and we wanted to continue having fun together. We got married and moved to Germany. Almost immediately, high functioning autism reared its head and the real problems began to emerge. Keep in mind: I still have no clue about high functioning autism or any of the details of how this works... All that I know is that my life SUCKS. For whatever reason, It's difficult for me to function at my new job. Meanwhile, my relationship is falling apart practically right from the beginning. Although the friendship between us is still strong, I'm realizing that I'm not a very emotionally supportive spouse. High functioning autism was at the root of so many of the issues that I had... Now, when I finally found out about it, things clicked... For the longest time, I absolutely hated my life. I was miserable, things were just getting worse, and it felt like I was cursed with a terrible life. This is about 1.5 years ago. My marriage was getting worse and worse. It wasn't until I unlocked the ket to evolving my mindset and connecting with my spirituality that things began to shift. I learned about the Law of Attraction, I learned about self love and acceptance, I began to get to the root of some serious limiting beliefs. So many limiting beliefs around self acceptance, self approval, and self love began to emerge. What was the result of this intense period of self discovery? Well, I'm gay. It explained so much... It explained why my emotions were always overwhelming me. I had blamed this high functioning autism thing but really it was unexpressed sexual emotions that were locked up inside. Once I began this period of self love, self acceptance, and self realization, everything changed. High functioning autism is a superpower. All that needed to change was ME and how I view the world, myself, and my "disorder". My life radically changed. Share this video with someone in the event they're fighting a battle you know nothing about. Much love! -Paul Tokgozoglu

How To Overcome Mental Health Issues

Mental health issues plague so many people in today's society... Different forms of Anxiety and Depression seem to run rampant. If you read some statistics, these cases seem to be increasing! What is going on? Is it because of the food we eat? Is it because we don't get outside often enough? Is it genetic? Is it because of vaccines? etc. etc. What's the cause? I became obsessed with overcoming Mental Health issues when I found out I'm on the autism spectrum... Growing up in a homeschooled family, I didn't have many issues in school. I went to a small private College (shoutout Lycoming College in PA!) and didn't really have problems there either. Once I graduated school and started working at a 9-5 job, the issues began. The noise of the office was completely overwhelming! Do you know much about autism? If you do, you'll know that sensory overload issues are at the root of many of our struggles... The world is just so damn loud/bright/smelly/etc.! Up until this point in my life, this wasn't bothering me too much... Not enough for me to notice anyways. However, once I was living in the "real world" with a job, a relationship, bills to pay, and a whole lot more, the issues started coming... and they happened seemingly overnight! Suddenly, going to work every day was hell. I fucking HATED my job. In the beginning, I blamed all my issues on the job! Again, I didn't really know I was "on the spectrum"... Honestly, I thought everyone was having this experience! I thought my boss was a tyrant anytime he asked us to stay late... How could he keep us in this torture chamber any longer than was absolutely necessary!?! Not wanting to complain, I kept it all inside... I didn't tell anyone I was struggling. No one else was complaining so I thought I'd be wimping out if I said something. About a year into that life, things got bad. I started having panic attacks almost every day before work. My body started to go into a state of panic whenever I was driving to work... It was a response to the trauma of being in a loud and noisy environment that overwhelmed my system. It was right around this time that I found out about autism and began to connect the dots. I realized quickly that I WAS the only one having this experience. Most people don't go through life with sensory overload issues! Determined to have a better life, I made the commitment to overcome autism. I was hell-bent on starting my own business and living a great life... For people like me, 9-5 jobs are not really an option. If I wanted to have a happy life free from sensory overwhelm, I had to work for myself. Totally dedicated, I dove headfirst into "fixing" myself. Quickly, I realized that I would have to improve ME before I ever stood a chance of improving my business. I'm writing this email about two years from that decision... I'm pleased to say I was successful. Here's what worked! Like I mention in the episode, if you want a free guide of all the resources that helped me heal my life and take my consciousness to the next level, go to www.beyondhomosapien.com

I also discuss an amazing book, "How to Be Alone," by Sara Maitland, a handbook on solitude and why it's important for people, particularly those individuals with introversion qualities. If you're an introverted person, pick up this book and learn how to accept the fact that being with people 24/7 makes you crazy. If you're an extroverted person, pick up the book so you can understand that loner in your life, and why you really need to give her or him space. Maitland writes about silence and solitude and why she lives in a small cottage on a backroad on a Scottish moor: “What changed was that I got fascinated by silence; by what happens to the human spirit, to identity and personality when the talking stops, when you press the off button, when you venture out into that enormous emptiness. I was interested in silence as a lost cultural phenomenon, as a thing of beauty and as a space that had been explored and used over and over again by different individuals, for different reasons and with wildly differing results.”

Melody Johnson writes paranormal romance. She’s the author of gritty, urban fantasy stories about vampires, and other unnatural creatures. Melody graduated magna cum laude from Lycoming College with her BA in creative writing and psychology. She credits her time at Lyco, and her writing classes for much of her success. Sage advice from her college mentor encouraged her to look at writing as a long-distance marathon, not a sprint. By writing one page each day, at the end of the year, she has an entire manuscript. With that mentality, she’s written nearly half a dozen novels, and she has more on the horizon. And she’s only 29. Nancy Panko has achieved amazing success with her book, “Guiding Missal,” an unusual story about a prayer book that is carried in the pocket of three generations of men as they navigate war. As she held the Military Missal in her hands, Nancy thought, “If only this little book could talk.” Her novel gives the prayer book a voice. Based on actual events, Nancy’s award winning novel is partially narrated by the small Catholic prayer book that George Panko received as he prepared to deploy to the European theater during World War II. A baker turned infantry man/forward scout, Panko left behind his wife, Gladys, and small son, Butch, for several years as he navigated France and Germany, helping the United States and its Allies win significant skirmishes, including the Battle of the Bulge. Throughout his enlistment, George carried the small book in his pocket and read from it, memorizing passages and whispering prayers. Once safely home, George packed the military missal into a trunk and together he and his wife rear their family. Fifteen years later, his son Butch is ready to graduate from high school and wants to enter the Air Force. George hands him the military missal with a request that he bring it back home, safe and sound. Butch’s experiences while stationed in Germany aren’t always as harrowing as George’s, thanks to George’s efforts as a U.S. Soldier. Still, Butch does live through the Cold War and high-alert situations where ballistic missile launches were potentially moments away, from the Berlin Crisis of 1961 to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Along the way, Butch travels to Italy and gains an audience with St John XXIII, who lifts the prayer book out of Butch's hand and blesses it. At the end of his enlistment, Butch comes home and returns the missal to George. Back into the trunk the book goes. Butch marries Nancy, the love of his life, and they have two children. The couple move to Clinton County, where George enjoys a long career with Woolrich. Nancy began taking general education classes at Lock Haven University, transferring to Lycoming College to begin her nursing education at Williamsport Hospital. She graduated and began her career at Jersey Shore Hospital as a pediatric nurse for one year before working for Geisinger Medical Group in Lock Haven also in pediatrics. She was employed at Glennon Health Services of Lock Haven University for thirteen years before her retirement. Two decades pass and their daughter, Margie, meets and marries T.O., a U.S. Soldier deploying to Africa to combat Al Qaeda in Mogadishu, Somalia. Once again, the military missal’s amazing powers of protection are required. Butch searches for the missal in his late father’s belongings and loans it to his new son-in-law, T.O., with the same request his own father had: Come home safe and return the book. T.O. returns the book, convinced of its power after a U.S. Blackhawk helicopter goes down in 1993, and the resultant battle between forces of the United States and Somali militia fighters. “Guiding Missal” is a heartfelt, homespun tale that has moved people to leave more than two dozen five-star reviews on Amazon.  Nancy’s simple, sweet story has touched so many people it’s become a successful book in both print and digital platforms. Published by Torchflame Books, a hybrid publisher, “Guiding Missal” received the 2017 Silver Award-Medal for Historical Fiction from the Military Writers’ Society of America. Nancy is a ten-time contributor to “Chicken Soup for the Soul” and “Guideposts” magazines. She is a member of the Cary Senior Writing Circle, The Light of Carolina Christian Writers’ Group, and The Military Writers’ Society of America. She and her husband moved from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania to North Carolina in 2009. They have two children and four grandchildren. They love being in, on, or near the water with their family.

Because of NCAA rules, college coaches have to be really careful of talking to the wrong people and being accused of giving advice to companies that can be classified as "recruiting services," or in the business of acting as agents for high school players to get them into college. Because SportsRecruits is not a recruiting service - we're a SOFTWARE company - we can talk to college coaches about the recruiting process. And good thing we can! Jordan has a perspective on the collegiate recruiting process you're not going to find anywhere else. He's been a standout athlete in high school, he got recruited to play sports at Bucknell, he was a Men's and Women's coach at Lycoming College. From there he went back to the High School level to coach some of the most gifted and talented young athletes at Culver Military Academy. He then became an assistant coach at the elite Division I College of Holy Cross. He's recruited the most sought-after young athletes in the country. He's coached All-Americans and Olympians. He knows what the families of high school athletes don't know but should, and he shares it with you on this episode. The idea for this episode came from a blog post that he wrote for the SportsRecruits blogs, Summer Events Advice from a DI Coach, and after we saw the tremendous amount of interest that people all over the country have for his perspective, we decided to follow up and go really deep into the topics that matter to high school athletes trying to get to the next level and the club staffers tasked with helping them do it.
